“mistake”

I was reading something (hateful) a while ago, and after it bounced around a while, I finally have a response.

The main assertion made was that “God doesn’t make mistakes,” and this was used to support the secondary assertion that trans people are not actually their professed (correct) gender. While I am currently non-religious, I was raised Catholic and I mostly speak the language of Christian theology, so I wanted to write about this in a way I think would be more accessible to those who believe such things. 

Let’s back up from the original assertion, to the assumptions beneath it. The assumption here is that the human practice of assigning gender based on nothing but a glace at an infant’s genitals is correct. I’d like to suggest that *this* is where the ‘mistake’ is. If one can say, “With God all things are possible,” how can one discount the existence of a man or woman with a different body than you expect? 

And when this comes up against the idea of gender-affirming care that changes the appearance of the body, I would ask- would we need as much of it if we were willing to accept someone’s identity when they tell it to us? I think that much of the gender-affirming changes that people undertake has something todo with trying to fit in and be accepted as themselves. Certainly many people would likely seek it no matter the amount of acceptance they encounter, but I feel (this is personal opinion and has no fact behind it) that it might be fewer of them if they didn’t face problems when they “don’t pass”. 

So before telling someone that the infallibility of your god invalidates their identity, please consider that *you* could be fallible. Your assumptions are just that- assumptions not based on fact.

One more thing about this random ass au I swear. Girl what if after btsv Miles leaves spider society behind as well as the Spider-Man mantle and just. Goes home. I know this is unlikely to happen but just walk with me here.

The other spideys don't see him again for a couple years. Then they come back (maybe needing help again?), knowing exactly where to find him, and are surprised when he wants nothing to do with them. Miles tells them to fuck off and then they have to convince him to be a hero again, even if just for that moment. He does, but without the burden of the mask; he's doing this on his terms now 🤔🤔🤔

I feel H. P. Lovecraft is overrated

Confession:   I am not a fan of H. P. Lovecraft. I don’t hate him.  I’m just not a fan.  

It's not just that H. P. Lovecraft was a known antisemite, racist, and xenophobe (even by early twentieth century standards he was extreme).  

I just never liked his writing style.

Years ago I had been part of a Facebook group called Super Scifi Saturday - which was based on MeTV's Saturday night programming block, including the horror host Svengoolie.  (If you've ever seen the 1985 Fright Night he's sort of like Peter Vincent only in ghoulish makeup).

One day one of the group admins posted a thread "What is one of your scifi or horror unpopular opinions?"

So I said that I think H. P. Lovecraft is overrated.  

It's not that I think he is a bad writer.  It's not that I don't think he influenced and inspired a lot of people. I just felt he was overrated.

Even the world Eldritch today (which just means "weird or mysterious or sinister") has come to mean "Lovecraftian to most people.

I also notice he gets credit for a lot of tropes he didn't actually invent such as the forgotten primordial Gods. See "The Mothers" in Goethe's Faust Part 2 for a pre-Lovecraft example.

And we reached a point where anything with tentacles is associated with Lovecraft.

Well, one of the group admins really didn't like me saying this and suggested that I probably couldn't follow Lovecraft because he uses too many "Big" and "archaic words" that aren't common anymore.

As a book lover I tried to swallow my pride and not be offended at this assessment.  I tried to assure him that I read many books from that era and the chosen words do not bother me though I admit to not being a fan of his particular writing style.

He then suggested that I needed to read more stories in the genre to appreciate Lovecraft.

I, again, attempted to remain calm and polite and said that I have read many storied from that era *and* genre.   And that there are authors who use Lovecraftian characters and concepts that I like better than Lovecraft, like Neil Gaiman.

The group admin again suggested that I just "Don't get" Lovecraft. That I don't appreciate him because I don't understand his writing.   It was very much sealioning.  Very politely suggesting- again- that the words were too big for me and that if I studied more and read more I'd come to appreciate it.

Finally I snapped and asked him to stop with the condescension.   He had asked for an unpopular opinion and that was mine.   I told him he was being rude and disrespectful in assuming that just because I don't like something it means I'm not well-read enough, or my vocabulary is too limited, or that I'm not familiar with that genre.   I told him flat out that he was treating me like the only reason I could have for not liking Lovecraft is if I'm too ignorant or stupid to appreciate him and it was starting to offend me.

He said "I'm sorry you feel that way." and I thought he was genuinely apologizing but immediately after he said that I was blocked from the group.

paladins is nyext patch making changes to seris that im rlly excited fur but a little sad about seris currently has 1 talent thats probably one of the best in the game: Soul Catcher, that gives you 24% maximum health and damage after using her q to detonate 12 stacks, and you get percentage based healing off of those stacks too :3 agony and mortal reach are both kinda trash compared to that, even though both have uniqueish effects

But in the nyext patch, mortal reach is being replaced with Forsake, which fixes her biggest issue by making her 1.5s channel heal .5s (though higher cooldown), which is fucking massive in a game where antiheal exists and also lets her spam shots more, and agony is being replaced with a fcuking 20% damage vulnerability applied to people after you stun with four stack det fsdjknfjkds im sad abt this though,,, bcuz forsake is very clearly better fur healing than the other two meaning when im in 1x support scenarios i probably have to run it instead of 24% higher health and damage fur hiting 12 shots ;w;

why are these half a decade old challenge quests better designed than any boss from Olympus onwards

Notice the buster down isn't some absurd thing like 90% for 10 turns

Notice how they properly mix removable and unremovable effects

Notice how they indirectly buff Quick to make all 3 card types have their own strategies - Arts can loop, but against Berserkers will struggle more than normal due to the natural NP gain reduction the class has. - Quick does the least base damage, but in exchange can gradually wear him down by stacking antiheal - Buster can burst through the healing, but requires the most setup since you need to both reach the break bar limits before healing kicks in AND need to have a way to cleanse the initial debuff.

It's not just "REDUCE DAMAGE FROM [current meta color] BY A FUCKLOAD (TURNS: TOO MANY) ((UNREMOVABLE)) (((ALSO IGNORE IGNORE DEFENSE)))"
