I was unfortunate enough to come across this ask from someone I don't follow a while back. It was one of those wtf moments that was so strong, I had to show the screenshot to a friend who isn't in fandom and never has been. They know the basics of how fandom works, and I've told them about the pro-censorship people in fandom, but this post really required some extra explanation, and I thought I'd share how I broke it down for them:

Obviously, most antis are very young. We all know this. That doesn't mean that all young people are anti-sex, pro-censorship, or unable/unwilling to distinguish fiction from reality, but it's much easier for young folks to get caught up in dangerous and toxic communities—in both real life and online.

From what I've seen over the years, there are all kinds of reasons why antis campaign against fiction they don't like and why they harass other fans and small creators. But I think a key point is that they seldom target big name authors, movie studios, or other media companies who make 'problematic' things.

That right there tells you a lot about one of their primary motivations: power over others.

They want to feel morally superior to people who create art (including writing, etc.) that they dislike. And because they can't influence powerful individuals and companies, they turn their personal disgust and outrage on people who are their relative equals or on those who have even less socioeconomic power—especially marginalized groups like queer and disabled people, who make up large portions of fandom.

There are plenty of other factors that impact this radicalization, of course, but I really think that the power aspect and feeling like they're one of The Good People are the most important elements.

But anyway, the screenshot above got me thinking about how someone could reach the point where they genuinely believe that government censorship of fanworks is necessary to... what? Prevent people from making (subjectively) 'gross' art because... that will lead others to commit actual real life crimes?? That's what the anti above seem to be suggesting with the slippery slope comment, and when I got to this point in the explanation to my non-fandom friend, they were BOGGLED. They simply could not comprehend the massive leap of 'logic.'

So I paused for a moment and considered how I could explain it, based on the various stages of indoctrination I've seen among antis over the years.

I think that a lot of these young people are probably very new to fandom. They find out about fanfic and go onto AO3, and they likely assume that some algorithm will handfeed them what they want—even though they haven't bothered to learn how an archive like AO3 works and haven't used any search filters to include or exclude things they like or don't like (this required a whole explanation about AO3 filters to my friend btw).

So anyway, these people who have grown up on sanitized mass media fail to heed any of AO3's many warnings, including creators' tags, and they come across something that they think is gross or that makes them uncomfortable. For example, "Ewww, fics about underage characters having sex is gross and makes me uncomfortable." That's fine. Hit the back button and use filters to avoid that. Problem solved!

But then maybe they go on social media and complain about someone making art they don't like, and they rapidly get sucked the echo chambers of cult-like anti communities. And this is where they all amp each other up by exchanging conservative talking points dressed up in ostensibly progressive language. They begin to feel angry and self-righteous and certain that they have to do something about this issue they've collectively fabricated. After all, "Think of the children!!"

I should also point out that most antis don't seem to even understand the words they use. For example, in that screenshot, it's pretty clear that the op is using 'censorship,' 'glorification,' and even 'slippery slope' as emotional catch phrases rather than words that have useful and concrete meanings outside of fandom.

Finally, their crusade against the fiction they dislike becomes such a huge part of their identities and 'friend' (more like mutual purity surveillance) groups that they just keep building it up into this huge moral panic until they're unironically saying things like, "Writing a fic about a 17 year-old and an 18 year-old kissing is actual pedophilia and the author should be harassed and doxxed and imprisoned."

When I got to that point, my friend was still boggled, but it was more of a horrified sort of boggled, where you just stare into space and contemplate the merits of a giant space rock hitting earth in the near future.

I really wish people getting sucked into anti mindsets would take a moment to consider how bathshit their beliefs sound to the average human being on the planet who doesn't spend huge amounts of time on social media.

Tags for this little adventure: Panic/Anxiety attack. Very girl talk. So sorry but I am leaning into the 2000's cliches with this interaction of Kurt. Hopefully, this is multiple parts? Not gonna promise but I got Ideas with this bad boy.

"You know you're obvious right?" Pixie mumbles under her breath. It's been three days since the ship was saved from not just the sleazy men who promised to transport you all to Genosha, but also those pirates. Between books, card games, and entertaining Sammy, the only kid on the ship; the voyage has been very dull. By all means that should be a blessing, but there is only so much to do when there are two more days of open ocean to venture. That's probably why people have been looking for something new to talk about.

"Don't play dumb. And don't be surprised. I've seen that look before..." Your new best friend counters while whipping a guardrail. Pixie is unlike any girl you've ever confided in. Although she's a bit shy thanks to the best of homeschooling and the worst of public, she's one hell of a spitfire once you got to know her. Looking back on it, her pink hair was enough of a sign that she was unabashed in who she was- for better and for worse.

You sigh under your breath as you wring out your mop. You and your newest friend volunteered to clean around the ship to fill the time. But now the book you've reread twice is more tempting than ever. "You and your romance novels..." You mumble. "CMon Y/n, it's obvious! You've been avoiding him like the plague!" Her beautiful butterfly wings extend in exasperation. Meanwhile, her hands settle on her hips. You can only groan as any words can and would be used against you to support this baseless claim. "Y/n!" They whine, making you sigh and pinch the bridge of your nose.

Has the X-Man entered and exited your mind in shadowy poofs? No. More like he wanders in, stays a bit... but leaves! Begrudgingly leaves, but leaves all the same! And so what he's charming and kind, and his accent is hypnotic... just like those eyes...

But it doesn't mean anything! It won't mean anything! Because he's a superhero and you were just lucky to be saved by him. Thats it! It doesn't make you special or anything. You're just another passenger on a ship he just so happened to rescue and now escort to its destination. It's no biggie. 'Probably another Tuesday for him if you got the nerve to ask.

"Look, I get you're a fan of The Duke and I but-" She turns back quickly to point her finger in your face "Leave Daphne and Simon out of this! I am talking about you and tall, dark, and-" The door to the room creeks open, making the commotion stop as the subject of conversation pokes his head into the room. "I'm sorry but did I hear The Duke and I?" Nightcrawler questions with the start of a smile. Your skin shifts to a golden shade of yellow from the nerves, making Pixie glance at you with a knowing smirk. To the astute, it would look like your skin matched his eyes.

Nightcrawler looks between the two of you. "Oh ah, I'm sorry, was I interrupting something?" He asked, genuinely curious. Just as you were about to your mouth, Pixie beat you to answering the million-dollar question. "We were talking about The Duke and I!" She said with way too much enthusiasm. You shoot her a pleading look that she promptly ignores. "Ah! I love that book." He marvels. The way his eyes light up forces you to fight another color change. "I must confess, Julia Quinn's repertoire is somewhat of a guilty pleasure of mine." He mutters as his tail curls. Pixie gasps, making you smile a little at how endearing your friend can be. Even when she is being nosy.

"Oh really? What do you think of Simon?" He smiles wide. "He has a special place in my heart! His and Daphne's banter is wonderful! And his motivation- unique and timely!" Pixie smiles wider, if that's even possible, "You know I have been trying to get Y/n into the series, but she's more of a movie lover-" You roll your eyes playfully. "Not true! I enjoyed the Harry Potter books and Twilight!" Pixie groans as you smirk. "Those are so overrated!" You glance to Nightcrawler, who's chuckling at your antics. The feeling of fighting the change makes your fingers tingle with numbness. "You have a very mainstream taste." He notes. You only chuckle while you shrug. "Nothing wrong with that. There's a reason why things are mainstream. If things are good then they're good. Although..." You shiver at the memory. "What happened to Jacob in the Twilight book was not it." Nightcrawler raises a brow "What happened to him? Did he not get with Bella?" Pixie gags before coughing out "Worse."

You smile knowingly. "Trust me when I say, you don't wanna know. If you do, wait for the movies to catch up. Hopefully, they fix what happened to my guy." He gives you a look before shrugging it off. "I'll take your advice then." Pixie jumps up and down "Ooo! Wait! We should see it together!" Nightcrawler gives a surprised look while you raise a brow. "Do you think Genosha has movie theaters?" The smaller girl asks hopefully. "I thought you didn't like Twilight?" she sighs "Well, no... but it's something you like. And you're my friend!"

Something about that hits you somewhere you didn't expect as your shoulders relax. As the declaration sets in, your throat gets tighter. Although you don't know why or how, something about this feels wrong. It shouldn't but it did. Even though you felt lighter and the world brighter, this just felt different. No. No that's not right.

It felt like a long time coming. Something about this.

"Y/n?"

You blink away from wherever you were to see Pixie and Nightcrawler giving you concerned looks. "Are you okay mein freund?" He asks as he sets a gentle hand on your shoulder. The amplified heat coursing through your body seems to rush to your face all at once. "Y/n, you look like a firetruck..." Pixie mumbles as she gets closer to check you out. "Talk to us," she quietly pries as she takes your hand. Your gaze flicks between them and their touches while your throat dries up. All you could do was just look at them with emotion-filled looks as you struggle to communicate. They only look to you expectantly, their concern running deeper with every passing moment.

Shaking your head seems to get the message across as the dryness in your throat moves down your esophagus. Nightcrawler looks between you and Pixie before looking back at you. "Y/n, you can still see and hear us, right? Your vision isn't blurring or anything?" You nod while sending a squeeze Pixie's way. "Kurt, I don't know what's going on..." panic drips into her voice. Kurt keeps his eyes on you. "Y/n, you're not allergic to anything, are you? I just want to make sure of something before we get you some help." You shake your head quickly, making your vision blur even after you stop. "Okay, Pixie, stay here with Y/n. I'll be right back." He mutters before disappearing into the shadows.

With him gone, you let yourself hold onto Pixie tighter as a surge of fear floods you. "Hey, hey- Y/n! What going on?" You force yourself to speak, only for it to come out as a croak. "I don't know," She glances between you and the door only to move you to the wall. "Just sit down okay?" She mumbles nervously. Obliging is the only thing to do as your fingers and feet give way to numbness. "Talk to me." Pixie joins you on the floor shortly afterward. "Try to talk to me okay?" Your voice comes out weakly. "It's getting hard to breathe, my hands and feet are numb, s-same with my face,... Pixie, I don't know what's going on."

Pixie gently nudges you. "Hey, hey, it's okay. You're okay Y/n. I'm not leaving you." She hesitates before touching your arm lightly. "Is this okay?" Your shaking your head makes her immediately retract her hand. "Okay. Is there anything I can do? Maybe distract you until kurt gets back?"

With no other ideas, you only nod. "Okay, um... So, that Kurt guy huh?" You sigh as your skin shifts to a light pink. "We are not talking about that." You groan, making Pixie smile a little. Even though it's at your expense, you manage to smile as well. "Okay, okay, fine... how about... what are we gonna do when we get to Genosha?" You close your eyes and sigh "What do you even think Genosha is like?" You mutter. She sighs along. "Hopefully warm. It's an island, right? So nice beaches are a must." The buzzing sensation in your feet seems to mute the longer you linger on this thought. "Long days in the sun, rainy days indoors..." Pixie nudges you with a soft addition "A spot of tea by the fire." Salty sea air drags into your lungs, reminding you where you are. "No more police sirens." You whisper while your hands intertwine over your chest. "No more fear on the TV." She assures. "No more running."

"No more judgment." Your gaze breaks away from your hands to see Kurt lingering in the doorway with a glass of water and a blanket. "No more running." He chides while taking slow steps toward you. The glass of water is offered to you after he takes a knee. Pixie gently takes the blanket from him to wrap it around you. Meanwhile, you give Kurt an appreciative look while sipping the cold water. "Take it slow, you're okay," Pixie assures. All you can do is close your eyes as you set down your glass. Tears you didn't know you had start to flow from a place you haven't felt in a long time. "This is a safe space," Kurt mutters. A hand sets itself on your shoulder as you curl into yourself. "Oh, Y/n..." You hear from Pixie before an all-encompassing acceptance grounds you.

Hugs never felt this good.

James and Sirius are privileged, rich fucks--treatment of Snape, all their comments towards him?? Yeah yikes

Unapologetic assholes--James harassment to lily and severus, James still messing with him even though he and Lily were together (?) Sirius' harassment to severus, Mr. I wish it was a full moon, the Prank and his idgaf attitude to it, matter of fact, his whole attitude after breaking out of prison?? Does this guy care about anything??

They match each other's freak--James constantly instigating shit and Sirius backing him up (?) James uses Peter to inflate his ego and then Sirius makes fun of Peter for it, not James tho (begs the question, do they ever call out each other??) clearly neither of them sees peter as equal (although yes, sure, mauraduers were as close as brothers)

Pretty chill with violence--again, James and Serverus, Sirius and Severus, Sirius and ready-to-kill peter, like bros been plotting since escape???

Obsessed with each other--Wont explain why Sirius is obsessed with James, but does James rejecting the dumbledore's offer to be a secret keeper to make it Sirius count?? And then Sirius is like no, and not Remus either, let's make it Peter and James is like, well ok??? Wtf??

Empathy where??--this is an extension to unapologetic assholes but still, they genuinely did not gaf about anyone else. They were horrible to everyone close to them (yes lily and remus) or near them and especially severus.

They both died but one of them didn't do much--Sirius was a parental figure to Harry (even if he was shit, he tried) and he brought unhinged comedy, that's all I need!! And idk what James did besides having a son that was key to ending the war. (Idk what Evan did but props to Barty cause he brought the return of Voldy!!)

They are each other's first thought--James with wanting the secret keeper to be Sirius, Sirius being Sirius the entire series. He did not check up on Remus (his ex bsf) once after escaping even though he was very reachable, the first thing he did was check on harry (as he should)

That's how I interpret Rosekiller, this is no hate to the ship or the characters. This is literally why I love rosekiller, that they're not morally good and are very unhinged about it plus the obsession and that deep understanding with each other.

There's the full screenshot, not just the cropped result bit. If you're actually looking at it you may notice 13 votes and no notes at all. At that point eleven people had voted I dunno and not spoken. I was trying to bait people into actually explaining where they were from cos at that point just voting "I don't know" told me nothing at all, and everyone who's voted had said nothing so I figured the post wasn't engaging enough to get an answer. So I made it a bit more engaging.

I genuinely thought that was a common phrase across the world and wanted to find out what a few other people thought, and it's annoying when you ask for a conversation and get crickets (look again, 0 notes. No reply saying what country anyone is from. No reblog with tags saying they've never heard it. No comment saying maybe their Irish grandmother said it once but they think it's probably Aussie exclusive). I snuck in a lil treat of my work in progress housewarden card. The jumpscare it was to toggle my version with the og card underneath, y'all. Am I making my version of pretty much all his cards? Yes. Will they ever be finished? Who knows? Anyways, onto the headcanons...

- Physically, I feel like I changed a lot and not a lot at the same time. I gave him some more scars which I guarantee you are from really stupid accidents.

- Piercing on his ears just cause I felt they fit him and snakebites because (I'm so down bad for them) it gave the illusion of fangs even with his mouth closed. Gave him moles cause they're pretty.

- I textured his hair and gave him a shit ton more because if the og design won't AT LEAST give him fluffier hair, what's the point? Yana Toboso, if you don't give this man a high ponytail in the Clubwear Card, I will hunt you down. Also made his front, larger braids the colour of Cheka's (And presumably Farena's) hair because honestly? They didn't really look similar enough? Also threw in some smaller braid to 'tie' them in more (haha).

- Someone gave him like this cool inverted pupil due to a scene in the movie but I simplified it to basically heterochromia.

- This might be hardly noticeable but I give give him slightly more muscle? I felt it suited him more idk.

- Onto non-physical headcanons, he has 💕depression💕! This is kinda not up for debate given how much he exemplifies the symptoms. Hell, he made me realise that I may have depression cause I was like, "Damn, he's so relatable, not wanting to get out of bed, no motivation to do anything, struggling to care of himself. He just like me frfr- oh..."

- By the way, I see a lot of people talking about Ruggie's reaction to the fallout of Book 2 but I think that on Leona's side, he felt horrible and probably locked himself away for a WHILE. I think his mental state must have been terrible and I'm SO PISSED HIS FCKING PROBLEMS NEVER GOT BROUGHT AGAIN WTF! Well, I'm on Book 4 so maybe???

- Anyways, I saw someone posit he could also be autistic, more on the asymptomatic side which is actually growing on me a lot. Picky eater, doesn't like tighter clothes, not fond of loud noises, smaller things but I'm a fan.

- Really random but I like the idea that he's one of those people who kids love for literally no reason, he just doesn't like to be around them.

- Is actually extremely book smart, though that's kinda already canon but I mean this bitch was a nerd when he was younger. Knows way too much on various topics, especially about his homeland.

- He can purr. I know lion's can't but there are literal mer and fae. He's just a big kitty. My and Idia like 🤞 when it comes to thinking of Leona as just a big meow. I have a cat who doesn't like anyone but I'm her favourite, I could win him over.

God I love my bigender child.

- I made him black, though probably mixed and gave him vitiligo for both visual flavour and a mild(?) reference to like hyena spots?

- He originally was going to have her hair down but then I realised how many of them had their natural hair already so I gave him dreads? I'll have to render them out at some point.

- Gave her more scars too, since she grew up in a more rough environment. Made his eyes really big and cute 'cause I feel like she can get extras when she hits 'em with the puppy eyes.

- Probably got mad ADHD, has to constantly be fiddling with something or another. Wears spinny rings a lot. He's actually really good at paying attention in class and likes to learn.

- Steals from Leona, whether it's money or items or clothes he leaves out (which, while Leona would never admit, he purposefully leaves out for Ruggie).

- Oh and a post pointed out that hyenas can purr, so have fun with that.

Not me struggling to find a weight emoji (I failed) 😭😭😭

- Ah, I made a reference in the Heartslabyul post about my concern about darker skinned characters with white hair and I was mainly talking about Jack. I also had to make Kiki, and I figured that wolves have pretty naturally salt-and-pepper hair, so why not. I actually love how it looks omg, it's very pretty and marbled.

- Gave him darker skin, since I headcanon him as black but I did see someone who designed him as indigenous so it might change in the future idk. Also it makes his eyes almost glow and I love that for him.

- He gets more scars too, though likely from sports rather than fights or anything.

- He's autistic. Apologies that so many of them are autistic to me, not only am I autistic but like, the way they're written speaks to me. His whole moral compass being the reason for Book 2 playing out like it did was an immediate 'yes' from me. He's my boy and my son and I will fistfight anyone that smack talks him (looking at those Savannaclaw NPCs in one of Deuce's vignettes).

- Oh, I forgot. He listens to K-Pop. I don't know if it?s canon that he has younger siblings, though I totally think he does, but one of them accidentally got him into K-Pop and J-Pop so whenever he's at the gym, that's what he's listening to lmao. Specifically girl groups, he likes them enough that he knows all their names. He insists it's out of respect, which it is but he's also lowkey a stan too lol.

- Generally has a weakness for cute things, even if he doesn't show it. Also a total plant nerd omg. He could instruct you on pretty much any houseplant on how much sunlight and water it needs, seasonal changes, etc.

Final note is that I'll make a separate post about him and Epel, cause I love them and have some headcanons there too.

Third Year - (she/her) Transfem - Aromantic Demisexual Sapphic

- Twisted from Rafiki? I think that's his name, the baboon. I'm crying sobbing throwing up that you can't see her eyes in this.

- She got the white hair since the fur on a baboon is directly white and took inspiration from Dislyte's Isis design. Her eyes are a pale gold like her earrings and she has red to blue eye shadow.

- Natural resting bitch face but she's just tired most of the time. She'd probably be the actual vice housewarden as I think her family has been close to Leona's for a long time, though she earned her spot with her own skills.

- Additionally, I wouldn't call her and Leona 'childhood friends' but she's known him for a long time. She's like, concerned about him as he's changed so much but she also worries that it's not her place. As a result, she tries to make sure Ruggie's not taking on too much and handles most of the dormhead duties herself.

- Mandisa is also based on the hyenas, though I don't know if her and Ruggie are from the same pack necessarily.

- I gave her scars, moles, and some piercings as well, I just felt like they'd suit her.

- I think she and Jack would be relatively similar in terms of personality, I see her being the gruffer upperclassmen. I think she'd be rather protective of the first years, knowing how harsh the older dorm members can be and she does her best to make everyone feel welcome.

- My girlie based on Kronk from The Emperor's New Groove! Yes, she is a big and buff bimbo? Himbo? I don't know but she's got a heart of gold and head empty.

- I wanted to keep her physique cause it always annoys me when people genderbend a character but don't keep them proportional to their og design. Mini tangent over, she so silly I love her.

- She and my Yzma character met as first years and have been inseparable since, though I'll talk more about that later.

- Not a massive ton of characterisation sine it's been a while since I've seen this movie too but I'm always open to suggestions.

- My final baby from Savanaclaw, also based on a hyena. Specifically the lil bug-eyed one, but I gave her a lazy eye instead. Not sure how well that comes across but I tried.

- She's got scars, was definitely bullied as a kid and I think that once the dorm members consider her a part of the pack, they'd be super overprotective as a result.

- That being said, she's more than capable of defending herself as she's good at various martial arts.

- She's into rock music and joined the music club as a result. Probably a drummer or guitarist as I think she's insecure about her voice.

- She and Mandisa are quite close and she convinced them to dye the edges of her hair red. Abayomi wanted touch up hers and managed to get Mandisa in on to lol.

Its really disappointing the sheer lack of anything lady mechanika i find on the internet

The tumblr tag just has someone reposting the book covers, the subreddit is mostly cosplay and lewds of lady mechanika, like wtf

Its a genuinely amazing series I'll give a summary of the main cast that we know the most about aka whove been around the longest and a general plot summary because more people should be into this and it upsets me that theres probably only a few thousand people who like it worldwise, at least considering how big the fandom is (basically non existent)

Our main character: Lady Mechanika is a sorta half mechanical half human person, but NOT a cyborg or android, it's more of almost living metal? Idk how to describe it but anyways in public shes a royal, expensive looking person wearing, as one of the other characters puts it in comic set 1: very frumpy. Very poofy and fanct looking dresses, however when shes in action she wears the most butch clothing imaginable. Think steampunk highwayman+american revolutionary war military clothing. (It would be easier to show and not tell but imma try to show by telling) in terms of badasstry i would compare her to Bayonetta but human and machine instead of magic.

Then we have the side main character: Lewis. He's an inventor who creates fancy machines and is sometimes hired by lady mechanika, but he does go out on adventures with her throughout the series. Think of him as sokka but also fire nation inventor. He curses a LOT but overall is friends with Mechanika, regardless of if she says theyre friends or not, theyre clearly friends considering how much she relies on him.

First main side character: Dr. Charles Littleton. He's not as important to the story as his daughter but he often has information for mechanika to occassionally progress the plot or to start the comics adventure. Hes the brains outside of mechanika due to being a medical doctor and also being rich, owning his own mansion, hes also good friends with Mechanika

The final character ill go over here is also a main side character: Allie Littleton. The daughter of the doctor, shes obsessed with Lady Mechanika to the point of because of Mechanika not fitting the stories about her she doesnt believe that mechanika is who she says she is, she becomes a bit more important in later sets but for now I'll leave you with: shes a sort of half tomboy half kinda proper girl. And dont be getting any ideas either, since i know lots of people sexualize Lady Mechanika, this girl is like 10. But if we exclude mechanika shes also one of the most entertaining imo lol. Like she straight up argues with Lady Mechanika this person who is intimidating even to the cops, who mind you the cops dont fight with mechanika.

Theres one more side character thats sort of the "marketable" character in the series but they come LATE into the story like 2 or 3 to lastest set of comics.

Anyway onto the plot:

Lady Mechanika is on a quest to find the person who made her the way she is now as she can remember being human before this but not much of her specific past. Sometimes shell find some people from her past showing that her creator has been in the town but left before she got there. The people left behind help mechanika put more of her memory back together, and with the help of lewis and dr. Charles theyre also discovering and putting a stop to the plans of the main antagonist: blackpool a, as far as i remember, crime ring with powers pretty high up on the totem pole, i dont remember if its government or company based but they do have a famous inventor in their ring, -or is it a corporation? Yknow what the specifics dont matter all yoy need to know is that they are big and powerful and sometimes do things that mechanika finds out about and needs to stop.

And its steampunk with some occassional horror elements, definitely body horror considering mechanika and the first character other than mechanika we meet who looks like mechanika, and even one who doesnt. It also has minor elements of magic in it as well, but most of it is technological, with occasional magic sprinkled in.

And as ive said its a really good read, chapter 0 is free to read, either as a free comic book day or on the website

Wtf were you thinking with that poll? Actors and musicians sue people all the time for writing fanfic about them. It's one of the few rare things BANNED on Ao3. AND it's how fanfic net got purged of all smut. Also it's just like, supper fucking creepy and stalkerish? Like restraining orders needed? Seriously wtf.

I love how you seem so mad at me like the poll is to justify writing fanfics about real people when I’ve made my intention clear that it was a genuine question because I’d seen a lot of people debate about it so many times and would love to hear more of people’s opinions regarding the topic in deeper details as to why they think it was okay or why it made them uncomfortable. but if you must know, I personally voted against it. for the reason stated in the option. and I completely understand why people would take legal action against fanfics being written about them without permission / consent.

that being said, I didn’t know AO3 banned it because they literally have tags where people posted fanfics about real people. I don’t read or engage with them, but a quick tag search shows there are, as of now, 128,739 works for Actor RPF (real person fiction). and even without filtering the tag, I’ve come across fanfics about real people on AO3 all the time.

again, I don’t read them and I don’t engage with them. but unless I miss something, I don’t think they’re banned on AO3. and before you try to put words in my mouth with your implication and your assumption of my belief again, my saying “I don’t think fanfics about real people are banned on AO3” does not mean I agree with people posting fics about real people nor does it mean I encourage fanfics about real people, just my thoughts that I don’t think AO3 did anything to remove those works and that I believe AO3 actually allow those works in their platform, unless a legal action is taken against any specific work.

for what it’s worth, your thoughts on this subject are literally the same as mine, but I mean I can’t stop people from doing what they’re doing. do I think fanfics about real people are an invasion of privacy and do I think it’s crossing boundaries? yes. do I go out of my way to harass anyone who writes or reads them? no, because chances are, my words aren’t going to stop them from doing it anyway, not with harassment, at least. so I just don’t engage with them.

Do you outline your fics before writing them? 

DO I EVER. i looove a good outline. i taught myself to do it accidentally as a kid by trying to "pre-plan" my scenes on notebook paper at school so that when i got home and turned on the computer i could write that much faster. it was like getting to work on the fic without access to msword. as an adult i write entire posts about it on request. i genuinely think it is one of the most helpful things you can do for yourself if you're struggling and i also think it's a TON of fun.

Do you regularly discuss your fics, or do you keep most of the info to yourself before you start posting?

getting me to shut up is the trick...............idk, writing has always been very social for me. i love a gdoc full of comments. i post excerpts. i answer asks. i reply to comments. wtf is the point otherwise. i mean, okay, yes, i have obviously written stuff that only got posted to my ao3 sock (do people still call them that...) or never got shown to anyone at all, but it's less fun. i wanna socialize!!!

Is there a scene you are dreading writing? (Want to share what it is?)

not currently, but i really, REALLY had myself tied up in knots prior to writing the sexual assault scene between lucanis and zara in the ossuary, for 3 reasons:

i had never written anything like that before, and even though 99% of it takes place off-screen, that was still terrifying

i know how the DA fandom can be and i was afraid somebody was gonna throw rocks at me (this did NOT happen ty everyone for being chill)

i knew that by including this element, even though it is not at all graphic, even though it comes with a long list of warnings and instructions on how to skip the scene, i would potentially turn a lot of people off from the fic who might've otherwise enjoyed it. (this did kind of happen; at least two people that i know about politely explained that they'd been planning on reading and changed their mind after seeing the tags. which is of course everybody's right! reading safely is important! i'm not mad about it. but it did provide a ready source of Worry at the time.)

that being said, i know my truth (tw for discussion of that scene behind the link), i'm really proud of how the fic turned out, and i'm very grateful that my friends who helped me edit it did not let me chicken out of doing it. @maulthots @slaygentford i'm blowing you kisses <3

What is your favorite part about writing?

this is so crazy, i know, but hear me out: it's the part where i write. i always feel so alienated by those memes that are like, "writers love to do anything but write!" (especially when grrm does it because he thinks it makes him look cute. it doesn't, and he can suck it.) girl, not me. i love to write. barring some kind of mental health episode (and sometimes even despite that) it brings me more joy than 99% of other things. the first time i finished a fanfic i began pretty much immediately, like same day iirc, working on the sequel because trying to imagine not doing it anymore was so devastating. like, i wrote the last word and my very first thought was "i have to do whatever i can to make sure i do this for the rest of my life no matter what." not everybody is lucky enough to find their calling but i was 100% put on this earth to write long-winded fanfiction.
