i need a new phone, they're making me get a new sim card and this one's like ... so full
i don't have anywhere to store things to back it up but still have them accessible bc i don't have a desktop and like - my sd card is so full i can't save stuff from the phone to it
but new phones don't have sd card slots anymore????????????????
along with not having headphone jacks
so like i literally cannot buy a new phone and transfer all the crap on this one bc none of them have enough memory????????????
even the really fancy pricey ones are utterly shit in this regard??????????
(for clarity: i am speaking solely of android phones, i know not of iphones, i've given up on apple)
like i want a phone i can do photo edits on AND download mvs AND store multiple instances of 51 fifty-minute long episodes of a single chinese tv show to watch whenever PLUS a bunch of movies and screen recordings?
128GB is NOT ENOUGH for that especially since at least 12GB will end up being OS right?
like i literally was just looking to buy a new phone of the exact same kind i have right now bc it's perfect - it's only flaw is that it's old and full and won't be getting new updates - but i can't bc they're literally only available refurbished and then STILL thin on the ground
most likely bc they're the last phone generation with sd cards and headphone jacks!!! i don't blame people for not giving them up!
i just want to put the new sim card in something else so i don't have to worry about transfering and i can leave most of my stuff where it is and use Old Phone as a music player i guess
but i WOULD get a NEW new phone!!!
if only! they! had! expandable! memory!
we do not speak of cloud storage - if you have to keep paying extra for it, it doesn't count as part of your phone!!!

Hey! So I have some lived experience in being poor and mentally ill I had to learn the hard way in my adulthood after growing up with abusive neglectful narcissistic parents. Maybe it will help someone else.
1. Instant pot. Crock pot. Rice cooker. You only need one, but all 3 are versatile, can use very little electricity to run, and are perfect to dump ingredients into and come back later to a healthy, cooked dinner.
You can research which is best for you by looking up "crock pot recipes" "rice cooker meals" to get a feel for what types of meals you can prepare in each and how it's purposes can best fit your cooking style.
2. Get your electronics secondhand. Phone companies make so much off of poor people bc they contract us into pay plans that mean that by the time our phones are needing replacing, we've paid for it 2 or more times over. Consider going Sim only and getting your phone secondhand.
Websites like backmarket and envirophone sell refurbished phones, tablets, laptops, smart watches, TVs, consoles, headphones, all sorts like new and for a fraction of the price point you'd usually get them at. I've not bought an electronic new since 2015 and the products I get refurbished last just as long as if I'd bought them new. Plus it's better for the environment. Even if I had money I don't think I'd go back to buying new honestly.
3. Static charger. If you're Autistic and can't sit still, like me you might be finding that the first thing to go on your electronics is your charge port. It's really annoying because it's not a cheap fix and I have had to replace phones early when they won't charge any more.
Last year my girlfriend and I got static chargers. It's an adapter that sits in your phone/tablets charger slot that magnetically connects to a universal charger. Its great for us because now everything rechargeable (phones/tablets, but also headphones, game controllers, keyboards/mouses) takes the same cable. It's really handy, but for me the best part is that the adapter doesn't move. So even if I'm fidgeting with my phone on charge it won't wear down the charger pins over time. We paid £20 for 3 and it's paid for itself because I've not had to take my phone for it's yearly fix since I got it.
4. Make a cozy space outside of bed. As a bedrotting girlie I know the allure of just saying "fuck it" and curling up in bed is so strong. I also know that when I do it for days at a time my sleep quality gets worse, my days blur together and my mental health gets so much worse. Especially if I'm working, watching TV, eating all my meals and doing my hobbies all from my bed.
One thing that helps me break up the bedrotting and at least helps me get some decent sleep so I might wake up feeling better tomorrow, is having a cozy spot that isn't in bed I can spend at least some of my day in.
For me, it's the couch in my living room. I've furnished it with pillows, blankets, and a little coffee table I can rest my stuff on so I can feel as comfy as I do in bed, but not actually be in bed most of the day. For You it could be a book nook, or a floor bed, or a desk with a chair in your bedroom.
5. Giant water bottle. This one is really simple. We need 8 glasses of water a day to be healthy and hydrated. Basically nobody depressed has the energy to fill up a glass of water 8 times a day. If you can get a water bottle that holds 2 litres (65oz) of water, now you only need to fill one drinking vessel once a day to be healthy and hydrated.
It's really simple and sill but it honestly saved my life. I buy those drink flavor packets because I drink more when it tastes nice. Is it as healthy as plain water? No. Is it healthier than no water? Yes. Easy peasy.
My bottle is from Meoky, its the 64oz stainless steel camping bottle with a flip straw I got for under £20. I like it because it keeps my water cold and I'd rather walk on hot coals than take a sip without a straw, but I've bought same size BPA free plastic bottles for like £3 and they have lasted me 2-3 years too so the budget options are absolutely worth it too.
6. Reconsider what's worth getting second hand. Generally when thinking about buying secondhand we mean clothes at the thrift, and that's great, but buying pre loved can be anything, and you can buy some high ticket items at an affordable price point that way.
If I ever want an appliance I always look second hand first. My rice cooker is secondhand and it is my favourite appliance. I've also bought a popcorn maker for a fraction of the price I'd buy it new, and I'm looking for a Kitchen Aid mixer for no more than a third the price they usually sell at. My vanity houses my shark air styler, I got it refurbished second hand and it was like new when I bought it. I use it every day and it still has so much wear in it.
Generally, the bigger and heavier something is, the closer to free you can get it, because the people getting rid of it just want it gone. If you ever need a washing machine or some furniture, look on gumtree or local no buy groups first. Type "free ___" followed by where you live into Google to get an idea whats available. If you're furnishing a space it's very likely you can get everything you need for the cost of the van you hired to collect it all.
7. Frozen vegetables. Fresh produce is getting more expensive and because we neurodivergent and mentally ill people can have a habit of letting fresh produce rot in the fridge, wasting money and making more mess to clean up, it's usually not worth it. The thing is, frozen produce is cheaper because it is picked in season, healther because it is frozen at optimum ripeness, and can be safely stored in your freezer for months, it's so worth doing.
They're usually pre-cut and can generally just be chucked into your dish frozen to defrost while cooking, making them easy and accessible. You can buy mixed vegetable packs (in the UK the most common is sweetcorn/peas/carrots and broccoli/cauliflower/) for some variety too, which I like to just dump a portion into soups or broths for some added vitamins.
8. Medication delivery. I've been medicated for mental illness for years, and a regular problem I used to have was I would neglect going to pick up my meds because I was depressed, then I'd run out and be unable to collect them because the lack of meds was making me more depressed.
Now however, I'm signed up with an online pharmacy. They processes my prescriptions exactly the same way any other pharmacy would and dispense them through the post in a box that fits through my letterbox. I never have to leave the house for meds again which is actually a lifesaver, the shipping is super cheap, like free for 3 day delivery and £2.99 for next day, and it's all processed through a super simple app that I only have to use like one a month when I request my refill.
It's so worth it and if you struggle to get out like me I absolutely recommend it. In the UK it's called Lloyd's Direct Pharmacy, but I'm sure it's a service you can find in other places of the world too.
9. Laundry separation is a lie. Which isn't a big deal for people who don't care about throwing money away on extra loads or people who have the spoons to faff around separating their clothes arbitrarily, but for poor neurodivergent people, it is.
So here's the thing, the rules of separating laundry by colour came about when clothes were made of all natural materials that would stick to each other when agitated and natural dyes that would run in water. Nowadays, clothes are made of synthetic or blended materials that can handle the friction of a modern machine and synthetic dyes that hold up to basically anything. 99% of clothes on the market, and therefore probably 99% of your wardrobe, is polycotton or some other poly-blend. So generally, everything you have can just all go in together on a warm wash.
Now, if you have woolen, linen or cashmere pieces, you should be separating them and following the care instructions on the label, but everything else, just shove it in mate, nothing bad will happen.
10. Protein powder. Protein powder is cheap, it's stored dry to it basically never goes bad, it's obviously protein so it's a really good addition to your diet, it tastes of whatever flavour you buy it in so it's a good meal substitute if you're depressed and your appetite is low, and it comes together really easily.
I usually get it in big tubs because they're cheaper per gram that way and I just add them to my coffee/hot chocolate for a boost or stir it into some Greek yogurt for a quick healthy snack. Thats actually my favourite way to get protein in because it's like 2 minutes and it covers up that sour taste yogurt has. I've also stirred it into milk for my cereal to varying success but it's good because the fat in the milk and the carbs and fortified vitamins in the cereal make it basically a meal. If I'm struggling for breakfast I usually add a scoop or two to an instant porridge pot and I have a ready to eat nutritional meal ready in the time it takes to boil the kettle.

"the holy or the broken" -Ted Lasso
I'm so sorry.
WORD COUNT: 2401
XXX
There are three eras in Roy’s life, and they’re all defined by the same woman.
The third echoes the first: Roy Kent, angry at the world with no one to pull him out of his frustration. It’s also worse, though, because before, Roy lived in blissful ignorance of the joy and sorrow that laid ahead.
Rebecca and Ted express their surprise at Roy’s anger. They thought him changed, or perhaps that grief would prevail over rage, and they were wrong. Because Roy Kent, when stripped of everything he is -his athleticism and grim humor and the love of his life- has anger. Nothing less and nothing more.
At first, he can’t say her name. He doesn’t even think it, because every reminder of her is a reminder that she’s gone. Despite her mark on everything- the furniture they picked out together, the bed they shared, her usual seat at the dining table, the compliments she gave his hair and clothes- Roy doesn’t think of her. Which means he doesn’t think at all, so he becomes his anger and his pain, and nothing else.
He stops coaching, obviously. Nobody asks him if he’ll keep going, nor does he announce his departure. His absence, professionally, personally, emotionally- is expected fully. Though people still coming to the fucking house. He tolerates her parents, and Phoebe once or twice, but eventually the visits dwindle, and Roy doesn’t check his phone or answer the door. There’s shouting, sometimes- inevitably Ted Lasso- but Roy has soundproof headphones for a reason and he’s perfectly fine with calling the cops on Ted. And he does, more than once.
His sister begs him to talk to her, or at least to Phoebe, and Roy, in all his anger, doesn’t have the heart to turn his niece away. So it’s just her and Roy, a few days a week, and they order food directly to the house and Phoebe tells him about school, and he grunts in acknowledgment. She cries sometimes too, and that’s when he holds her. No words are exchanged, but he comforts her, enough so that the sobs stop. The numb feeling he has remains intact.
The yoga moms scout his address, somehow, and drop off a wine basket- they drink in relative silence, and clean up his house and make a few casseroles. He picks at the food, but they slowly disappear, and it’s almost nice to eat more than once or twice a day.
It doesn’t get easier. People tell him it will, that the pain will start to lessen, but it doesn’t. Not three weeks after, or four, or five, or when summer emerges and the lilies bloom.
Roy’s not particularly good at adapting. He never wanted to be. And it’s bullshit that he’d have to start now, for some shit fucking luck and life-alerting occurrences he never saw coming.
Because he never expected that there would be an “after” regarding Keeley Jones. It’s not something he planned for and certainly not something he ever wanted. It’s just: one breath she’s there and the next, she’s not. Gone and the house empty, her office too, and suddenly every space at Richmond is filled with flowers because Roy doesn’t accept a single bouquet.
He does start to say her name, although only to his sister- the only adult he talks to. He spits it out, with venom, and he suspects that it’s this habit that prompts Rebecca to show up at his house.
She sneaks her way in, the stubborn shit. Apparently, she hid down the street until he ordered food, bribed the deliverer with an obscene amount of money, and rang his doorbell herself. Rebecca slips into the entry before Roy realizes it’s her, and slams the door behind her.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” He hisses, and to her credit, Rebecca doesn’t flinch. She gives her best businesswoman smile, the one that so directly contradicts the flint in her eyes, and straightens.
“Someone informed me that you made developments in your grief-
“Fuck you-”
“-so I thought a visit was due.”
“Get the fuck out of my house.”
“Somebody told me once that I was always welcome in her home. Has that changed?”
“Yeah. She’s fucking dead.”
Rebecca does bristle at that one but she doesn’t challenge the statement. Instead, she clears her throat, setting Roy’s food down on the table in the foyer.
“Your sister told me how quiet you’ve been. And that any time you talk about Keeley, you do so with an incredible amount of anger.”
Roy doesn’t deign to respond, glowering at Rebecca instead. She takes a look around the room, in all its dusty glory. Lights off, trash piling on the floor, clothes strewn over backs of couches. It matches Roy, in terms of appearance. Unkept. Uncared for. Unloved.
“I’m calling the police,” Roy decides, scanning the room for his phone. “You can’t fucking impersonate a food deliverer. Or fucking be here when I don’t want you to be.”
“I paid him handsomely-”
“-illegal. And fireable.”
“-enough so that his salary for the next few months should be covered.”
“Get out.”
“I can’t do that.”
“I don’t give a damn about what you’re here to fucking do or say. Leave me the fuck alone.”
“And leave you to stew in your anger and your filth? I don’t think so.”
And Rebecca struts into his living room and seats herself on a sofa.
“Dr. Sharon proposed to me that your anger had legitimate grounds. Not just your usual brooding about playing and coaching a game for a living, but you know,” Rebecca gestures to Roy. “Real reasons to be so surly.”
“My fucking wife died.”
“Yes, well. My best friend died yet I’ve been outside over the past few months.” She gives Roy another placid smile. “Despite the fact that I’m mourning.”
“It’s different.”
“Undoubtedly, yes. You’ve been much unhealthier in your habits.”
“Fuck you,” Roy growls. “Get the fuck out of my house.”
“No.” Keeley would refer to that as Rebecca’s scariest tone. “I came to talk.”
“I don’t care.” His hands clench into fists.
“You’re angry at Keeley.”
“I’m fucking pissed at you and your fucking break-in habits. Did you fucking compare notes with fucking Lasso?”
“You need someplace to direct your anger, and since fate dealt you both such a terrible hand, the only thing you can think to do is blame Keeley.”
“That makes as much fucking sense as you impersonating a takeaway driver. Fuck you.”
“So you go from not being able to say her name to saying it like a curse because you’re much more comfortable with your anger than sorrow.”
“I can say Keeley’s name.”
“Can you say it without sounding like the angriest person on the entire planet, Roy?”
“Fuck off.”
“Well?” Rebecca stands. In heels, she towers over Roy, who glares right back at her. “Show me you can, Roy.”
“I don’t have to prove shit to you.”
“No. But I asked you to.”
“I’m not fucking angry at my dead fucking wife.”
‘You’re angry at someone.”
“Yeah. You.”
“Come on now, Roy. Do better.”
“I’m NOT fucking angry at Keeley!”
Rebecca raises an eyebrow. “Clearly.”
“Fuck you.” Roy paces before her, ignoring how every step makes his knee throb. “Fuck you, fuck off. Fuck you.”
“Are you even sad?” Rebecca says quietly, and Roy freezes, his muscles clenching painfully.
“Ask me again,” he dares, his tone low. He takes a step closer to Rebecca, who remains unfazed.
“I said: are you sad your wife died in your arms, Roy?”
“Fuck you!” Roy bellows. He spins away to upturn the coffee table, sending dishes crashing to the floor.
“Do you miss her? Do you wish she hadn’t died?”
“I’ll fucking kill you.”
“So I’ll see Keeley again. How lovely.”
Roy roars, using the full force of his body to punch a hole in the wall. His fist comes out covered in plaster, bright red blood leaking from his knuckles dusted white.
“She fucking died in a freak fucking accident. There’s nothing- nothing- she could have done differently.”
“But she left you.”
“She fucking- she-” Roy’s chest heaves as he looks wildly around the room, at anything but the woman in front of him. “She was supposed to get her fucking nails done. We were going to get Thai for dinner. We had a sexy fucking weekend planned, and she was going to come home and it all would have been fucking fine.”
“And now she’s gone.”
“We can’t do any of that shit. Can’t fucking fall asleep next to her ever again. Or hold her fucking hand. We had fucking plans-” His words catch in his throat, and he looks away, examining the new damage to the wall. “We had plans.”
“Roy-”
“Don’t.” He closes his eyes. “You riled me up. Is that what you fucking wanted?”
“Yes,” Rebecca admits, and she retakes her seat on the couch, disregarding the surrounding wreckage. “Since the one person you want to talk to is gone, I figured I’d substitute.”
Roy glances around the house, at the forgotten groceries by the entrance, at the overturned table, and at the destroyed wall. “Good fucking job.”
“Thanks,” Rebecca says swiftly. “I figured I’d be better at it than Ted.”
“I’d have fucking killed him.”
“I thought so.” Rebecca sighs, massaging her temple. For the first time since her arrival, her bravado fades and her shoulders slump. It’s a familiar sight, one Roy witnessed the last time he saw Rebecca- at Keeley’s funeral, where all traces of the usually confident woman had faded away, and a grieving shell stood in her place. “Is that it, then? All the anger is for what’s never to be?”
“Yeah. That’s it.”
“And this is the first time you’re realizing it?”
Roy’s eyes narrow. “Yeah, it is.”
Rebecca shrugs. “Okay.”
Silence prevails for a long while, then Roy sighs and takes a seat next to Rebecca.
“You know, my office has quite literally never been quieter. Even with Ted bursting in at all hours, it’s just… not the same. I started to get frustrated at Higgins trying to coordinate with me simply because he’s not the person I want to see. And then I woke up angry, too. Absolutely pissed at the sun just for rising. Because every day that I experience is one I should be sharing with her.”
She looks down at her hands, which tremble slightly. “It’s not fair. And I have nowhere to put all my anger and blame.”
Roy wordlessly gestures to the wall, and Rebecca gives a soft laugh.
“There’s one option.” Then, she swipes at her eyes, and sniffs.
“Keeley would have never forgiven any of us if we gave up on you, Roy.”
“I know.” He clears his throat. “She told me as much. About me.” He rolls his eyes, then blinks rapidly. “I’m not supposed to give up on myself.”
“Good job,” Rebecca retorts, and Roy growls, but Rebecca gives another breathy laugh. “You didn’t call the police on me. I’d say that’s a good sign.”
“Don’t let it go to your fucking head.”
“No. Of course not.”
“Thank you,” Roy says very, very quietly. Rebecca takes his hand and squeezes it briefly. Her palm comes away coated in dust and blood.
“Clean up, Roy,” she tells him, standing. “I’ll be seeing you soon.”
-
Rebecca leaves, but she sends over a team of cleaners and a fresh batch of groceries. For the first time since Keeley died, his fridge is fully stocked with food for him to make into meals, and the house is spotless. He sends a text to his sister, telling her to fuck off in a way she’ll know means thank you, and showers. He trims his beard and dries himself off with a freshly laundered towel, then he falls asleep ass naked on the bed and sleeps for twelve hours.
He goes to see Phoebe and the rest of his family. They catch him up on all the petty bullshit he doesn’t give a fuck about, and it’s nearly normal, except that he drives home alone to an empty house.
He goes back to yoga, and every stretch feels like he’s never done a downward dog before in his life. Still, the wine after is good, and he ends up going home with a spare bottle and another casserole, and so another part of his life resumes.
It’s a slow process. Richmond is a hard place to face, with Ted trying to be casual as he checks in on him, and the boys stepping around him like glass, and Jaime Tartt in tears when he first catches sight of Roy. Her office, the lack of visits from his wife during the day, and the plaque commemorating her on the wall hurt like getting that phone call all over again. But it’s the beginning of the mourning process, Dr. Sharon will tell him, and now that it’s started, the hurt will eventually lessen.
With every end, a beginning.
Roy takes his first steps.
-
There are three eras in Roy’s life, and a thousand different Roys.
There’s the prodigy footballer, eight years old and scoring goal after goal in every match. There’s the Chelsea player, a championship winner, then the Richmond player, bittered by age. Injured Roy Kent, retired, coaching his kid niece’s football team. Then, briefly: professional commentator. Richmond coach.
Roy Kent, who fucking hates Jaime Tartt except usually his girlfriend is nice at least. Roy Kent, Keeley’s boyfriend. Roy Kent, Keeley’s fiancé, husband- widower.
Roy Kent- a bastard luckily enough that Keeley loved him too. Roy Kent, who lit up when she walked into the room, who smiled more during their time together than he ever had before in his life. Who wanted to start a family with her. Who doted on his wife and promised her the world and a thousand other cheesy things, because she had that power over him.
Roy, who was beside her at the very end, who evoked her last words and smile. Roy, who had that horrible, painful privilege of easing his wife’s passing with reassurances and small comforts and anything he could do to make her feel his love.
Roy, who loves her still. Who’ll die loving her and missing her, and wishing they had just one more day.
Roy, who learns to live to make her proud.

I think taehyung has the deepest voice and rm might be a close second but I don't know yoongi's raspy voice just does it for me even if it's not the deepest
for our indulgement: time to crank out the vocal analysis discourse for the three baritones. let’s see: who has bts’ deepest voice? and: why exactly yoongi sounds so raspy.
Tumblr media
SUPPORTED RANGE
RM and yoongi span down to A2: in songs. so far, tae did C3 so that’s actually slightly higher! even if he has bts’ widest vocal range (!) and is more trained, the rappers go down further more comfortably. which makes sense: otherwise tae wouldn’t be in the vocal line singing with the tenors if his comfort zone wasn’t settled a bit more above. but still, that’s very interesting.
UNSUPPORTED RANGE
when comparing strained low notes outside of songs, yoongi and tae went down to Eb2. the difference was: yoongi’s had projection and fans on site pointed out they actually heard it. there was less strain as well. ironically, suga ranks last in vocal technique for obvious reasons but he still has resonance like that: tells us something. it’s not trained or pushed, it’s naturally (!) there. yoongi is the ‘properly’ deepest, tae the very close runner-up, and RM in third place; tae confirmed he doesn’t go as low.
that yoongi is the only member who hardly sings and has a lot of trouble tackling it — tenor-heavy kpop music is manageable for lyric baritones at best — is a glaring sign he has the lowest voice AND range settled the deepest as well. the deeper the range, the more of a rapper you end up in a group, and the more autotune you need to keep up with the higher keys. full singing pieces written for him would be extremely outside the genre. guess why yoongi was the most averse to becoming an idol rather than a PD. he knows his range is least suitable for bts’ keys. hell, recently... dynamite even has a key change upward. and his lines are decreasing — guess why, he’s the deepest baritone.
which means for the comfortable range again, yoongi can probably support further down if bts ever made a song including those notes (99% unlikely). if you ask me, with training he’d probably make a good ‘almost’ lyric bass-baritone. he’s not extremely heavy-sounding, but at the brink. that he’s entirely untrained makes it hard to gauge. if he can match someone who does singing as challenging as taehyung, it’s still a sign though. with training yoongi would discover his unsupported range is quite immense. he could train himself to go even lower than taehyung since where taehyung’s unsupported lower range ends, yoongi still resonates. yes, he can go even deeper. so... that’s an exciting thought.
SPEAKING VOICE
the daily life convos (although not perfectly indicative) already show it: when you look where their voice ‘sits’. you can clearly hear that tae is a lyric baritone. it’s all softer, very audible. namjoon can amp up the high pitch as well. meanwhile, yoongi’s voice cracks immediately and becomes fragile that way. joon’s sometimes does as well, but not as easily. yes, it connects to technique and being warmed up, but it also shows where yoongi’s limits are. which in turn tells us he rather excels and extends in the other direction.
people usually become silent when he’s conversing, he talks in a different range. you always need to turn up the video volume because the frequency (!) is so much lower! #1 sign his voice is the deepest, with joon and tae you hardly need to listen twice. sure, he slurs the speech more, but it’s clear he is less at home up there. yoongi’s voice is pretty big in the chest, mind you. tae has that as well, his resonance is very powerful, but yoongi becomes extremely booming the louder he becomes, and the tone resonates even lower in the torso. the more he relaxes, the deeper it becomes.
tae and RM speak a lot more in mixed register in the meantime, often from the head. yoongi never does that. they can get upbeat and high-pitched without sounding too odd. they can shout and raise the tone with good pressure. they have to deliberately lower their tone to be as booming while yoongi doesn’t have to: he only has to speak more confidently/freely. big difference. yoongi already speaks in that range. if he deliberately lowers his voice, crazy shit happens! and you need to crank up the volume even more. you heard it, yoongi is too deep for the human ear.
taehyung’s depth comes from the upper chest, the front of the throat. similar to namjoon. his depth is in the throat, front of the chest, sounding more growling. he needs the diaphragm to become as low, only then he’s booming, but it doesn’t sound pronounced like him in his comfortable speaking. yoongi’s voice is already at the back of the esophagus and wayy down the chest, and he knows it lmao! his voice resonates closest to the heart if you will, guess why he is so full of love. anyway.
that’s why it’s raspy: vocal fry — speaking from the upper throat to match the other members is already way too high for him and he tenses up. if he doesn’t use vocal fry, the intonation would not be clear enough to understand if your headphones are set to hobi’s pitch. i think the developed the rasp to keep up and be understood. that bts is so loud and even has a tenor as high-climbing as jimin is sort of his blessing and curse. but: it shows what his voice’s strong suit is by comparison.
what i also noticed is that it’s too deep to come out/be translated by the mouth. yoongi is very taciturn so his vocal cords are not used to it. i dunno why but i notice that deep voices become hoarse and squeaky more easily, you have to strain a high voice hard to get there. when yoongi is just humming, you hear the pitch as it is. again, this all happens if he adapts to the other members and the tone doesn’t come out clear since he’s not built to speak high.
god forbid he does anything head voice, it’s meme torment 😆 his vocal cords are just... different. he speaks consistently way deeper than the other baritones and the voice drops even more at the end of the sentence. i guess that’s why he’s so easily compared to a cat because purrs are also very very low. 🐱💜
TL;DR:
yoongi — deepest
taehyung — second deepest
namjoon — third deepest

INTJ or ENTJ?
Hi Charity,
I'm hoping you can help me figure out my type, I’m stuck between INTJ or ENTJ. I feel like neither of them fit completely, but I know that I use Ni/Se and Te/Fi.
I relate a lot to the Ni posts you made. I have a very personalized worldview, that I find impossible to explain (I have confused a fair amount of people in attempts made). I think things through before engaging most of the time....
You give stronger evidence for INTJ than ENTJ. Most of your "tert-Se" behaviors are more likely for inferior Se (sometimes leaping in too fast, miscalculating, but being sensory-aware and enjoying pleasures and aesthetics) than a Te/Se looper (ENJs tend to lose sight more of how things will rebound on them and make short-sighted tert-Se decisions when problem-solving sometimes, just to "rush" the process to completion) and you seem emotionally mature in a tert-Fi way (ETJs have real trouble connecting to people on an emotional level and not substituting physical contact for emotional closeness).

Hopefully it's not a bother, but could you write something about the Van Der Linde gang getting magically transported (Magic, Tardis, Marko, Science ) to the modern universe and having the gn! Reader help them adapt to this world? Maybe some of their reactions to new things (indoor bathrooms, new music, tv, memes) Thank you so much, love!
oh god this is a long post, and as always, im convinced i’ve missed one member out... minor drug warning on Johns headcanon, but the rest are tame. hope u enjoy!
Part 2 is here  |  Part 3 is here
Tumblr media
Arthur finds your computer and figures out how to turn it on. Your face turns white when you find him on Tumblr, quickly shutting the tab and urging him up off the chair. "Hey! I was reading that! I was... erm, I think I was having sex with myself," he tells you. Yep, he's found the fanfiction. "Do they really mean that? That I got kind eyes and a, uh... fat ass, I think it was?"  You quickly show him the kitchen and run back to delete all your history. John goes rummaging through your cupboards for something to eat, and eventually finds the brownies in the fridge. You find him on the roof, his eyes red and his heads spinning. "Them.. them brownies..." he mutters. "I know, John," you sob back. You know which brownies he ate, and my god, he ate a lot of them. Arthur babysits him, his mind still questioning what he just read on your computer. Dutch finds the beast of a lawnmower you have in your garage, so you show him how to use it. Why not? He's mowing your lawn for free. Well, he did mow your lawn, but you eventually have to send a search party out after him, only to find him a couple of streets away, parked up next to a childs lemonade stand, insisting they should be selling this lemonade for more if they want to make a profit.
Hosea also goes missing, but you find him during your search party mission. He's walking up the street back to the house with a paper bag in his hands, and he tells you he's managed to con the gas station clerk into giving him some free booze. You're not sure how, but he's done no harm so you let him enjoy his wine in peace. Bill found your anime figure collection, the ones with the big boobs. He asked you what they were, despite seeming rather flustered, but you tried to explain that it's normal and gave him a book to read. You catch him on your computer a few hours later buying himself a waifu body pillow because "I love her, dammit! Just let us be!" He also keeps pressing the squishy boobs on your anime mouse matt, and yes, he's still very flustered. Javier finds the TV in your room that has Netflix on it, so you show him how to use it and he seems happy distracting himself with that. You walk in a few hours later to see that Javier hasn't moved, but Molly is now by his side, also engulfed in the drag show on the screen. Javier has a thick pair of false lashes on that Molly managed to put on him, and the first thing he says to you is "can you believe this? They voted her off! I... I can't believe this." He's shaking his head and looks like he's about to cry. Charles discovers your computer, and you decide he'd be happy just browsing the web. You come back hours later to find 100 tabs open and your computer fan is louder than an airplane. The current tab open is on a 'where's Waldo?' piece. He's very close to the screen, and you decide to show him how to zoom in to help him find Waldo faster. He's very thankful, and not causing any damages so you leave him to it. Lenny also rummages through your kitchen and finds a pizza in the freezer. He asks you what it is, so you put it in the oven for him. He spends the whole 15 minutes sitting in front of the oven, briefly saying hello to Sean as he runs through. Lenny manages to get the pizza out without burning himself, turns the oven off, cuts up the pizza and takes it upstairs to enjoy with Jack. Yes, he also fed Sean a slice. Sean finds the energy drinks in your fridge that you keep for work. They tasted a little funny at first, but after the third one, he's decided he likes them. You catch him opening his fourth, his eyes are wider than the moon. He cries when you take it off him, and spends the rest of the day running around the garden with your dogs, followed by going to each member of the camp and personally annoying them until he crashes out under your dining table. It's a cozy spot for a nap. Kieran uses your computer after Charles comes off it, and discovers youtube. He starts off with simple cat videos and eventually moves on to fails and meme comps. By the time dinner rolls around, nobody can understand him, and you barely understand half the things he's saying. The only thing you do understand is "big mood," which is what Kieran says when he sees Sean asleep under the dining table. Pearson decides to avoid the kitchen and try something new, and you're quick to decide he'd enjoy rock music. You show him a couple of CD's and leave him to have a listen, only to come storming back up the stairs a few minutes later because he's turned the volume up to full blast and is having a rather funky jam session. "Now this, this is real music!!" He's really enjoying the classics. Trelawny is quick to figure out how to use the TV. He's seen "those moving picture shows" before, and he's mesmerized by how far they've come! You catch him up at 5am watching documentaries to help bridge the gap between his time and yours, and when you walk into the lounge, you're met by a very sleep deprived Trelawny. The only thing he says to you, with heavy bags under his eyes, is "terribly sorry to hear about all these wars you've been having, my dear." He finally goes to bed, but only because you make him. Swanson disappears, but there's a church down the road from you so you decide to check there first. He's inside, joining in on the ceremony, singing his heart out to all the hymns with a real bible in his hands, not the fake one he has back at camp. He seems content so you leave him to it. He thankfully returns just in time for dinner, and tells everybody how he's been blessed and that we can "never leave this land!" Strauss also disappears very quickly, and you have to search for him when you go to look for Dutch. He's also at the lemonade stand, trying to explain to Dutch that if the child sells the lemonade for more, then they're less likely to get customers as it's too expensive. The two of them are arguing, and the child seems rather confused. Strauss later has a breakdown at the noise your toilet makes, he informs you that he'll be using your outside bathroom, even if it is just the bushes. Micah says he doesn't need you to show him the ropes and swats you away, so you leave him to it. You've not seen him for a good few hours, so you run around the house trying to find him. You eventually find him in your room, going through your underwear draw. Arthur is quick to knock his lights out, and you leave him tied up in the garage so he can't do any more damage. Micah also pissed all over your toilet seat and didn't flush. Abigail joins Trelawny in the lounge, watching the TV after Jack tells her he's happy playing with the toys in your room. She and Trelawny have an argument over what to watch next, so you give her your laptop to watch TV on, along with a pair of headphones. She refuses to come off a few hours later because she's way too engulfed in the modeling show she's watching. You promise her you'll let her give you a makeover if she comes off, and she finally agrees. Jack discovers your big box of legos and he seems more than content playing with those. He ends up building a fort, with the help of Lenny, and the two fire pillows at you when you try and enter the room. The pillow canons are, of course, made from legos. At least they're not lego pillows! Jack also thanks you for the pizza, describing it as 'yummy.' Sadie finds your katana collection, and you're quick to take them off her and attempt to hide them. She spends some time pretending to be interested in something else, but as soon as you turn your back for a split second, she's found them again and is heading straight for Kieran. The room where you keep your katanas is now locked and Sadie is in time out. Susan comes across your sewing machine and you're happy to show her how it works. She picks it up quickly, and her eyes glisten as she realizes just how fast this thing is. You leave her be since she's not causing any harm, but come back an hour later to find she's made new a new dress for herself, and all the girls in the gang, including Sadie. They're all matching! Tilly finds your piano and tells you she's happy to be left to her own devices, she knows how to play. You eventually have to tell her and Susan to calm down after receiving another noise complaint, as Susan is attempting to sing opera, and Tilly is killing it on the piano. At least she hasn't damaged anything. She later joins Mary-Beth in time to watch Beauty and the Beast, also sobbing at the film. Karen goes into your garage and discovers your old golf clubs. You show her how it works in your garden, but just like everybody else, it goes wrong. Your neighbor knocks on your door, screaming, demanding to know why you keep firing golf balls through their window. That's when you find Karen and Sean (who is still on his energy drink high) having a contest to see who can smash the most. Mary-Beth discovers your kindle, and she seems rather content with being able to read. There's no way this could possibly go wrong? Well, you come back a little later to find that Mary-Beth is sobbing after reading Beauty and the Beast. She wants a sappy romance just like that to happen to her. She cries even harder when she watches the Disney film, along with Trelawny who hasn't moved from the TV for hours. Molly picks up your tablet, and after showing her what youtube is, you leave her to it. You find her a few hours later sat in front of your mirror with the most flawless, full face of makeup. She greets you by going "hey sisters!" and speaks to you like a vsco girl. You have no idea what she's saying, but she seems to be doing fine, so you leave her to it.

Terrigenisis (Part 3)
Tumblr media
Pairing: Avengers X Inhuman!Reader
Words: 2916
Summary: Your life is torn apart after undergoing terrigenisis unwillingly your life is turned upside down when you are deemed too dangerous to return to civilian life. You are put with the Avengers team to train and rebuild your life.
Part 1  / Part 2
 —————————————
Before you leave for training the next morning, FRIDAY asks you to meet Steve in the conference room. You walk in the room to see him going through some paperwork.
“Hey. Good Morning.” You smile at him.
“Morning.” He smiles back at you. “I’ve been working through your evaluation for field work. Can you sit with me for a few minutes?”
“Absolutely!” You are excited that he is working on some goals for you. You sit and he goes through each part of the eval. Technically, you’re field ready in every area except one. Firearms. Apparently, your aim has not improved enough according to Bucky. You are proficient enough with handguns, but using larger weapons throws your aim.
"I'm sorry. We can't put you in the field, yet." Steve frowns.
"No, this is great, Steve. This is what I need to know. Now, I have a goal and I know an excellent teacher." You smile at Steve.
"Bucky will keep working with you. He says your handgun skills are great. Your hand to hand is excellent. Just a matter of time, Doll. Uh, Agent, I mean, Y/N." Steve puts a hand on his face and takes a deep breath.
You giggle. You can’t help yourself. “It’s okay, Steve.”
“I didn’t mean to call you doll.” Steve says.
“Really, Steve, it’s okay. I didn’t think anything of it.”
“Thanks.” Steve stands and you follow his lead.
"Well, back to training, then." You smile.
"Right." He smiles back.
You give him a quick side hug and head to the training room.
 --
The team went on another mission and you were left alone on the compound again. As you are training with Redtail one day you really take notice of her sight. The colors and distance she perceives is incredible and so different from your own vision. You carry the information with you as you go through your routine. While in the range you make an incredible discovery and you can't wait to tell Steve and Bucky.
The team returns and you are giddy with excitement. You temper yourself and make a huge dinner for everyone knowing how exhausted they are when they return from long missions like this one. That night as you head to your room after cleaning up the kitchen, you hear Bucky’s voice coming from Steve’s room. A low moan and the whisper of Steve’s name. You freeze in place when you realize what is going on between the two. You pull yourself out of your stupor and grope for your headphones as you continue to your room. It takes you a few minutes to truly wrap your mind around the relationship between the two men. You had absolutely no issue with their relationship, but it was obviously not common knowledge. Or at least not a topic of discussion among the team.
It actually made you feel a little more comfortable. You firmly believed the two to be out of your league, but comments from Sam and Wanda had made you question if one or both had an attraction to you. It put into perspective, also, why Steve felt the need to clarify why he had called you doll the other day. He clearly did not want you reading anything into it. It was sweet really. The two falling in love with each other after being the only thing still tethering them to their pasts. You were happy for them.
--
The next morning, the team immediately fell back into their routine. You were excited when Bucky entered the range and Steve followed with him as you had asked FRIDAY to request his presence.
“Thank you for coming, Steve. I want to show you both something.” You smile at both. You had already set up for the demonstration you had planned and handed them each safety gear before you started shooting. Picking up one handgun you hold it in your dominant hand and shoot center mass. Without a break, you grab the second gun with your non-dominant hand and aim for headshots. You set both guns down and press the button to bring the target up for inspection. You look back and see both men’s brows furrowed as they stare at the target. Center mass is a perfect cluster of shots forming a small hole, as are the headshots.
“How did you do that?” Bucky asks.
“Now watch.” You pick up Bucky’s favorite gun that normally throws your aim considerably due to the sheer size and velocity of the weapon. Moving to the second target you shoot and again bring the target up to reveal a dead center grouping.
“Doll! How did you do that?” Bucky says emphatically.
You set the gun down and remove your safety gear. “I was working with Redtail the other day and I noticed how sharp her eyesight is. It got me to thinking if I could somehow use it to my advantage on the range when shooting. I spent the next couple of days trying to hone in on the distance sight when shooting and it just worked. It’s like I can see through her eyes even though I’m not warging. Can you imagine what this means? I think it’s just like my ability to comprehend vocal communication. I think I might be able to absorb their abilities. I don’t know if it was because of my long term exposure to her or what, but this could mean so many things if I could learn to do the same with other animals and senses. If I can hone my hearing and sense of smell it would make me even more useful.” Your words are tumbling out in your excitement.
“Whoa, whoa. Hang on.” Steve rubs a hand over his face.
“Did I say something wrong? Isn’t… isn’t this a good thing?” You ask nervously.
“No, yes, no, ugh. Nothing’s wrong. Let’s just go over all of it again. Slowly.” Steve says.
You start over from the beginning, explaining each step you took to get to your conclusion, and how it affected you. Bucky and Steve asked several questions and you answered as well as you could. When you're done you look between the two nervously. Their expressions gave nothing away.
"I have to report this to Fury. We need to update your file and do some work with you to see if this skill is something you can adapt to well. Bucky, work with her with every gun. See if her aim crosses over for all of them."
"It does. Also, throwing knives and bow and arrow. I tried everything while you guys were on the mission. But, I'm happy to go through it all again." You say.
"Thorough.' Bucky smirks.
"I'm a planner." You wink at him and smile.
"Go through it all again with Bucky," Steve turns to Bucky, "and I want a full report after."
Bucky nods and Steve turns to leave.
"Steve. One more thing. I found a dog I'd like to adopt. She's 3 years old and fully trained. I'll pay for her myself but I'd like to have her to work with." You fidget as Steve looks at you with raised eyebrows.
"You really have been busy. I'll check into it." Steve says with an indulgent smile on his face. "Find me this afternoon and we'll talk."
"Okay, thanks." You turn to Bucky with a grin. "Ready when you are." You bounce on the balls of your feet with anticipation.
Bucky smiles as he starts pulling weapons.
--
"FRIDAY, where's Steve?" You ask that afternoon.
"Captain Rogers is in his room." FRIDAY responds.
"Is he alone?" You ask hesitantly.
"Yes."
You knock on Steve's door a minute later and smile as he opens it. He's wearing a tight t-shirt and sweatpants making him look ready for a run.
"Hey. Is now a good time?" You ask.
"Sure. Are you okay if we talk in here?" He smiles and holds his door open for you.
"Sure." You echo him as you walk in.
He pulls out his desk chair for you and then sits on his bed. He looks at you and you look at him and there’s an awkward silence. Both of you waiting for the other to begin
“So, um, you said we’d talk?” You fidget.
“Right. Tell me about the dog.” Steve says.
“Her name is Dizzy. She’s a three year old Belgian Malinois. Fully trained. I met her two days ago and she handled the warg very well. Highly intelligent. She’s perfect for training and a total sweetheart. What do you think?”
“Dizzy?” Steve chuckles.
“Yeah. Her litter was named after characters from Starship Troopers. It’s a really campy space war movie.” You smile.
“Haven’t seen it. I talked to Tony. He’s okay with the dog since it’s for training purposes. Get the rest of the team’s consent and we can give it a test run.” Steve says.
“Great. Thank you!” You jump up and give Steve a hug.
“You’re welcome, Doll.” Steve says. “I mean…”
“Steve. Really, it’s fine. It’s cute actually.”
“You like being called doll?” He asks.
“Yeah. It’s sweet.” You smile. “I’m not offended by it or anything.”
“I’m glad. You’re a sweetheart.”
“So, are you.” You hug Steve’s waist again and head to the door. “I’ll see you later. I’m going to talk to everyone.”
“See ya later, Doll.” Steve chuckles.
You make the rounds to your teammates and receive consent from each of them. You are giddy with anticipation and call the owner to make arrangements to get Dizzy. As you're getting off the phone you hear a voice from behind, “Hey Doll.”
You turn to see Bucky. “Hey. Did Steve tell you to call me that?”
“He might have mentioned that you like it.” Bucky chuckles as he sits next to you on the couch.
“It’s cute.” You smile.
“You’re cute.” Bucky smiles back.
You laugh and nudge him with your shoulder. You feel much more free and easy with Steve and Bucky since learning of their relationship. You wish you could tell them you knew but you didn't want to force a confindance. “You two are goof troops.”
“What does that mean?”
“Silly and sweet.” You grin.
“Nah. He’s a punk and I’m a jerk.” Bucky says.
“You are not a jerk, Bucky! You are a sweetie!” You laugh.
“Aww, thanks, Doll.” Bucky leans over and kisses your cheek.
“See! So sweet!” You squish Bucky’s cheeks in your hands and then dissolve into giggles at the silly face he mugs.
“What are you two doing?” Natasha asks as she enters the common room with Wanda, Clint, and Vision on her heels.
“Just being silly.” You say. “What are you guys up to?” You catch the glance and smirk exchanged between Nat, Wanda, and Clint and roll your eyes at them.
“Just looking for some food.” Clint says.
“When are you not, Clint?” Natasha jokes.
“When I’m watching your six.” Clint snarks.
“Wanda, I can pick up Dizzy tomorrow. Want to go with me?” You ask.
“I can’t! I’m sorry.” Wanda frowns.
“No worries.” You say.
“I’ll go with you, Doll.” Bucky says.
“It’s an hour drive.” You want him to know what he’s getting into.
“I don’t mind.” Bucky smiles.
“Great! I’m leaving at 9.”
“I’ll be ready.” Bucky says and gets up to leave.
You join the others in the kitchen and chat for a while.
“You and Bucky looked cozy.” Clint says.
“Don’t read anything into it.” You shake your head.
“I’m reading plenty.” Clint says.
“Stop. He’s my mentor and friend.” You say.
“Yeah, you two seem really friendly.” Natasha says.
“Seriously, guys, it’s not like that. Stop.” You say quietly.
“Okay, okay. But don't dismiss it outright. You two would be good for each other.” Wanda winks at you.
“Uuugh.” You close your eyes and bang your head on the counter. “I’ll see you guys later.”
“You’ll definitely see Bucky later.” Clint whispers.
“I can hear you, Legolas!” You call back.
“I meant for you to.” Clint whispers again, chuckling.
--
The next morning you and Bucky leave from the shooting range to get Dizzy. You are so excited you can barely contain yourself.
"Why don't I drive, Doll?" Bucky says.
"Only if I get to pick the music." You smile.
"Just no more disco." Bucky grouses.
"Oh, come on, Buck. You don't want to 'Shake, shake, shake. Shake, shake, shake. Shake your booty'" You sing and dance around.
"Maybe if you keep dancing." He winks.
"That's a little difficult in the car. How about some rock?" You say and Bucky nods.
"Are you gonna keep the name Dizzy?" Bucky asks.
"Yeah, I think it's cute. Plus I like the movie. It's hilarious."
"We'll have to put it on the list for movie night."
The drive takes less than an hour with Bucky at the wheel. When you arrive the woman seems a bit wary of Bucky but she relaxes when she sees Dizzy's reaction. Dizzy immediately runs to you and then sniffs Bucky before practically jumping in his arms. You are laughing as Bucky kneels down to play with her. His wide smile and low voice with the dog is endearing.
"Well, she certainly likes your boyfriend." The woman says.
You chuckle at the woman's assumption but decide it's not worth the energy to explain.
"I'm glad Dizzy likes me, too. Huh, girl?" He ruffles the dogs head before standing. Dizzy moves to stand at his side.
You conclude business with the woman and leash Dizzy before heading to the car. Once inside, you turn to Bucky and laughingly say, "Did you steal my dog already?"
"What can I say? I have a way with women." Bucky chuckles. Dizzy tilts her head and lets out a little whine at the noise.
"Chill, girl, you'll see him around plenty." You reach back to pet her head. "You're gonna have lots of friends." You say.
"Have you had a dog before?" Bucky asks.
"Charlie had a pit named Brutus. He was a big baby."
"Where is he now?" Bucky asks.
"He crossed the rainbow bridge about six months before Charlie. We were just starting to talk about getting another dog." You look at your hands suddenly feeling the sadness and loss all over again. "Sorry." You say softly.
"It's okay, Doll."
"It just hits me sometimes that he's really gone."
"Grief is a process. You always feel the loss of those you love. He was a good guy, huh?"
"Yeah. He was. You and Steve remind me of him sometimes. He was an Army Ranger. Served three tours. Did I ever tell you that?"
"No." Bucky gives you a sideways glance.
"He had just discharged when I met him. Still adjusting to being back in civilian life. It took him awhile but he did it. He was brave and smart and really, really loving." Your voice breaks.
Bucky reaches out and takes your hand. "I'm so sorry you lost him, Doll, but I'm glad he was good to you. You deserved that."
"Thanks, Bucky." You hold hands for the remainder of the trip and your melancholy slips away the closer you get to the compound. "Okay Dizzy, ready to see your new home and meet the rest of the family?"
Dizzy's ears perk up and her tail wags. You and Bucky take her around the compound. Dizzy is very well-behaved and everyone seems to take a liking to her. When you introduce her to Steve she reacts in much the same way she did with Bucky. Practically rolling over for him. You are elated at how Dizzy and the team seem to immediately bond.
That evening as you are bringing her back from a walk when you overhear Bucky in Steve's room, "Did you know he was an Army Ranger?"
"No. I don't remember her ever mentioning it." Steve says. "She was crying?"
"No, just sad." Bucky says.
Dizzy obviously hears their voices too and swivels her head. "Wanna check in with the guys before bed, Dizzy?"
You knock on the door and smile when Steve opens it. "Hey. We heard you guys still up and Dizzy wanted to check in before bed."
“Hey Diz.” Steve pets the dogs head. “How, uh, how much did you hear?”
“Um, Bucky telling you Charlie was an Army Ranger. That was really it.” You shrug.
“Can you hear me a lot?” Steve asks.
“I usually have my headphones or earplugs in. I try to be respectful of everyone’s privacy.” You say.
“I know. I just forget how good your hearing is sometimes. You okay? This jerk didn’t upset you today?” Steve smirks as he gestures to Bucky.
“Watch it, Punk.” Bucky grouses.
“I’m fine. Like I told Bucky, it just hits me sometimes. I mean, I know Charlie’s gone. I’ve come to terms with that. It’s just sometimes… I’m sorry. You guys probably know better than anyone.”
“Doesn’t make it easier for you. If you ever need anything, we’re here for you.” Steve says.
“Both of us.” Bucky says.
“Thank you. I’m really glad to have you both as friends.” You smile.
“Who’s a good girl?” You hear from Bucky a minute later.
“She is!” You smile at Bucky who is on the floor with Dizzy practically in his lap. Dizzy’s tongue lolls out of her mouth as Bucky scratches her ears. “Alright, Dizzy, let’s let the guys get some sleep. Come on, girl. Night guys.”
“Night, Doll.” Bucky says.
Part 4
“Sweet dreams.” Steve says.

In broad daylight
Chapter 01: Out and about
Raphael is still learning to cope with his new life. On the rainy evening after Michelangelo's first national interview, the big and solitary turtle brother decides to go on a walk and while he tries to adapt to a world he never wanted to be a part of, he meets a human woman that changes his path.
This is an AU that diverges from cannon after the events of Out of the shadows. Instead of choosing to keep living hidden in the sewers, the family of mutants accepts chief Vincent's suggestion of trying to live a normal life among humans. This is a compilation of events that unfold after the fact, tales about the turtles and the humans that cross their paths.
This series may contain mature themes (Trigger Warnings will be included before every chapter), if you’re a minor please don’t interact.
TW: None
You can also read it in AO3
━━━━━━ • ✿ • ━━━━━━
It took Raphael two years to finally decide to walk on a sidewalk alone. It was the first time he was alone in... Well, Michelangelo called it “upstairs”, Leonardo called it “the real world” and Donatello just called the streets of New York by their common name. Raph didn’t called it anything since names carry meaning and that world and its residents were a mystery to him. When he had to describe the world above him, he called it “outside”.
He was 19 when he was outvoted and then convinced of accepting the idea of coming out into the world. Now a grown 21 years old man-turtle, he still felt his palms sweaty and his fingers cold as he held the knob of the door that led into the streets of New York. A shaky breath left his mouth when he finally opened the alley door.
It wasn’t the first time he walked among humans but in every occasion he had to (knowing he would only do it if he was obligated) he had Casey holding one of his shoulders or April holding one of his fingers. Now, the world presented itself in front of him and he was alone. Despite his anxiety, the landscape wasn’t as intimidating as he once anticipated, there was no big crowd filled with scared looks of disgust, only the concrete street and light rain drops. He didn’t know exactly what he expected, actually. It was too late in the night to be walking the street alone, no human would dare to bet their safety to wander around an ugly and stinky street. Raphael wasn’t human and he would bet his life knowing no one ill intended would dare to cross his path... No one would even dare to ask for directions or to wish him a good evening. No one would dare to approach him. He had learned sooner than later that even well meaning humans would avoid being alone next to him and despite his efforts to understand them there was a deep part of Raph that held a grudge against it.
The second oldest brother would rather spend the rest of his life avoiding contact with this reality. It took maybe two or three minutes after he started to walk down the street for him to regret that decision as he felt the warm thick air of the night against his skin. He kept his pace despite that, determined to reach at least one mile before coming back home. The streets were still empty and he could only hear his heavy steps on the ground and the distant sound of cars. There was a time he loved this city... A time when all he wanted to was to roam around hidden in the roof tops and the dark shadows of the alleys, a time when he could watch this world and not be a part of it, when he could be invisible, a mere observer. Maybe he still could, he thought, maybe his outfit made him look human enough from a distance... Raphael liked the clothes, he liked he was now able to hear Knicks' shirts that fitted him perfectly thanks to his new access to tailor-made clothing, he liked his loose trousers and the dark colored sweaters that covered his shell, he liked his sneakers and his watch. Life out on the surface had brought him many new luxuries: now the lair had tiles and furniture and a long corridor that led to a door facing the streets, it didn't smell bad anymore thanks to modern isolation and he had his own bed, a king sized bed, with many pillows and clean white bed sheets. Raph sighed loudly once again, maybe Mikey was right. Maybe life could be more than he perceived to be.

"Turn it on!"
The crowd cheered lively as the host turned in his chair.
"Good night, ladies and gentleman." He started talking in a pleasant voice "Tonight, in a exclusive interview... An absolutely unique moment in history. It's an honor to be here, sharing this moment with you as we receive with a warm round of applause please welcome... Michelangelo Hamato!"
Mikey walked into the stage with the biggest smile as the applause kept going, he was wearing a well fitted set of blazer and pants and he looked nothing like the wild and anxious brother they new. He waved to the crowd with such confidence that the absurd size difference between him and the host looked funny instead of terrifying, he even flipped the edge of his blazer behind him as he seated in the two-seater sofa and crossed his leg, showing a shinny elegant shoe.
"Michelangelo.... May I call you Mikey?"
"Yes, please."
"It's an honor... and I mean it, it's an honor to have you tonight."
"The honor is all mine, Jim."
The crowd cheered once again.
"Now... Mikey, I've to start saying... You're a sight to be seen!"
"Thank you!" Loud claps echoing from the crowd.
"How tall are you?"
"I'am 6'5"
"Taller than Micheal Jordan!"
"... And the smallest in the bunch!" Mikey commented with a big smile and the host returned the smile with wide eyes.
"Must be a very tall bunch!"
"A very big bunch!"
"Yes indeed!" The crowd laughed along with the host as Mikey shared a wide smile again.
━━━━━━ • ✿ • ━━━━━━
Ten minutes had passed since Raphael started his walk and three minutes had passed since a man with a dog on a leash had walked past him, completely unbothered by his presence. Had he made it? Has he invisible? Comfortable enough with the prospect of an empty city that slept while he walked, Raph took his headphones and pressed play in the link Donnie had sent him, the cellphone opened a new tab and a podcast started playing. Soothing was followed by a female voice that introduced the name of the show.
"...As always, thank you all for listening. In today's episode we'll be discussing the new revelations in the law case that wrecked the nation: the case Sacks vs Hamato, that absurd demonstration of pure capitalist greed that tried to condemn four literal teenagers to pay an equally absurd amount of money - and prison time!- for materials damage caused to the Sacks company-" "...and illegal espionage." A second voice complemented "Yes, thank you Sabrina. We have already discussed the legal implications that case could open for the judicial system here in America and all the possible outcomes in the Thirteenth episode of the first season of this podcast, if you haven't heard it yet, I heavily suggest you do so you can follow the argument of the developments in this case. Now, Sabrina... Yesterday we saw the final outcome of this case and the hearing that decided the sentence ended with an incredible emotional speech from Donatello - we know he was one of the brother's more involved with the whole process" "Yes" "... And now they're free! Of all charges!" "...Yes Gabi what we saw today followed by Michelangelo's incredible interview in the Late Night Show back on Thursday was, honestly, a beautiful strike against bigotry in this country..." "Absolutely, I mean... The judge of the case himself assumed that the charges were unfounded and biased..." "Yes! And now we have a established background to be able to-"
Raphael stopped the audio, unable to disguise his contempt. Geez , is that the kind of thing Donnie spends his time listening to? Wasn't real life already a bore? He let out a grumpy sigh and put his phone away. A human figure across the street started to stare indiscreetly at him and Raphael felt his heart shrink before making a blunt turn in a different street. The rain had stopped and the night wind was starting to feel colder, just like Raphael's heart as he tried to escape whoever it was that was trying to identify his figure.
A bright blue light appeared at the end of the new street Raphael just walked into. An all-night convenience store. Raph had been in a place that before, he and Casey had brought snacks and a couple of beers. He felt his mouth water at the idea of a cold beer. He had cash - more than enough. Maybe if he promised a fat tip they would let him get in. He shift his height between his feet as he observed the inside, the neon blue light was coming from a weirdly shaped advertisement placed above the entrance, perfectly contrasting with the ugly green light inside the store, some shelves appeared through the glass window and door, but he could tell that the place was empty - or almost that. In his head, Raphael had decided to take that chance and he was determined to perceive, his body, otherwise, didn't seem as thrilled with the idea. He waited outside as the rain started to pour once again, trying collect the mental strength to got in when a skinny old man opened the translucent door
━━━━━ • ✿ • ━━━━━━
"Mikey, your last name is now worldwide known since the start of the trial, tell me: is it Japanese? Was it inherited from you father...?"
"I don't know, actually... We made it up!"
"What?" The human man asked as the crowd giggled
"It's exactly that, actually. When we came to the surface and Sacks decides to sue us the judicial system needed a surname to use... Apparently!"
"So you just made it up!"
"Hell yeah! Wouldn't you like to come up with your name?"
"Yes, absolutely."
"What would you call yourself?" He host made a surprise expression as Mikey changed the dynamic
"Jim Linotax!"
"...Oh, it's a pleasure, Mr. Linotax!" Michelangelo said, offering a handshake as he managed to pull more laughs from the crowd
"Michelangelo... It's a unique name!"
"I heard once it was very popular in the sixteen century."
"Oh, really?"
"Oh yes."
"And all your brothers have renascence names, is that right?"
"Yes. Thanks to old dad."
"How 's that?"
"Well, you see, when you grow up in a tiny sewer house you have more concerns than you weirdly specific name..."
━━━━━━ • ✿ • ━━━━━━
"Are you gonna steal?" The tiny man asked and he seemed to fight the same nervousness as Raph. The turtle-man on the other hand, felt all his limbs stiff and his hands go numb at the sound of that old man directing calling to him. He made a genuine effort and reached his pockets for the dollar bills.
"I-I just want a couple of beers."
"Go AWAY! Go away! No beers here for you!" The man started to yell as Raphael finally caught up his accent. It was stiff and hard in the h's and o's, he couldn't decipher where it was from.
"I just want to buy something! I am a client!" Raphael responded too late to recognize his anger.
"Nothing here for you! Go away!"
"I HAVE THE MONEY!" Raph screamed back at him, waving the bills in the air. The world started to feel out of focus as he realized people had gone to their apartment balconies and were looking at him through the windows in the buildings surrounding the store. Had he woke the whole street? Did he hear someone saying they were calling the police? No, please... The last thing he needed was a scold from Leo for causing a scene... All he wanted was a beer. Fuck, fuck, fuck. More and more lights started to turn on as the buzz around him got bigger and louder. He felt his heart sink and his hand hurt from the tight firsts he could not undo. Something inside him couldn't decide between the want to murder that man and the uncontrollable desire to scream and shout. "No more roof climbing." Leo had said "We're like humans now. We can't just go out jumping through people's houses." He couldn't just vanish away, despite the burning desire to just escape that situation.
"Look," Raphael managed to say, after two or three deep breaths "... I am sorry. I just wanted to buy a beer... I am leaving now."
"Hey! I finally found you!" An unfamiliar voice shouted from the other side of the street. Raph turned to look and almost knocked over whoever it was. Their bodies bumped into each other but only the smaller of them reacted to the impact, he felt a tiny pair of hands grab his arm."OooOOooww! That was close... Hey, we've been looking for you! Did you get the drinks?"
"NO DRINKS HERE FOR YOU!" The store owner screamed once again.
"Damn... Ok. We can go somewhere else!" The female voice had a sharpness to it, finally Raphael finally looked at her.
Nothing in this world could have prepared him for the vision of the young women holding his arm. She was short (but most people usually are in comparison to the mutant), had a luscious curly hair, tied in two pigtails that ended in the back of her neck. She was wearing a very revealing blouse and high waisted pants that matched in color. She was clearly dressed up, with sparkly high heels and long elegant earrings and she was holding his arms with a casualty he had never experienced before.
"C'mon!" She said and turned her head to him, showing a full face of makeup and bright brown eyes "Let's get the hell out of here."
━━━━━━ • ✿ • ━━━━━━
The crowd followed Mikey and the host as they laughed at the childhood story the turtle just shared.
"Mikey, unfortunately our time is almost over... I just wanted to thank you once again for coming tonight, for coming out into the world."
"The pleasure is all mine Jim, really... I've spent all my teenage years watching you on TV... I never thought I would be here tonight, I never thought I'd have the pleasure of meeting such a welcoming audience (loud cheering noises) and I never thought I could be part of this world."
There was an almost child-like honesty in his words making the brief moment of silence that came after especially touching.
"He's killing it." - April whispered to the TV
"100%" - Leo's voice came after
"Thank you, Michelangelo... I hope we can have all your brothers soon!"
"You can count on it!" Mikey answered, excited
"You can NOT count on that" - Raphael responded at the TV

"I thought you guys didn't walk the streets... I've red the interview your brother gave to the New Yorker... He said you probably would wait a while until you decided to stroll around." The woman said as they walked back to the lair's alley door. She had told Raphael her name was Clara and they had held hands until they turned the corner and were out of sight from those judging eyes. She was smaller than most humans, Raphael later realized, maybe 5'1 or 5'2 and had a high pitched voice that made the turtle think about those weird anime dubs he used to watch as a kid. The strangest thing about his savior was that she seemed strangely familiarized with his presence. He ignored her comment as they kept walking in silence for a while. Raphael couldn't stop thinking about how long it would take for him to finally reach his destination and how could he respectfully ask for her to back off. Not that he wasn't grateful but her presence alone made him incredibly uncomfortable. She was too small, too elegant, too beautiful to walk just like that, beside him.
"I guess it is equally strange to you, right? To be here, in the real world... Out and about." Clara walked casually with both hands in her pocket as she looked up to the streets lights, Raphael wondered if she actually expected him to answer "... Is it weird for me to be like this? I mean... I thought you could use some help back there. But I don't mean to be inconvenient... Is it ok if you just walk with me closer to the next bus station? It is a bit late and I guess you're the perfect body guard..."
They kept walking, Clara and her tiny hands in the neon green pockets of her pants and Raphael with his stiff steps and dark clothing, all he wanted was to walk home without meeting everyone else, lock the door behind him and drink until all the memories fade away... But it didn't seem his wishes would come true as a pair of men jogging appeared at the end of the street, just in front of them. They looked at the strange couple and one of them startled at the vision. Clara looked at them and waved.
"Good night to you!" She said with a calm tone.
"Are you alright??" One of them asked from far away, still trying to figure out Raphael's image.
"Yeah!" She answered immediately "Why wouldn't I be?" Then she gave them a wide welcoming smile that made Raphael's heart beat uncontrollably "Good night to you." Clara then said, just as she turned one corner, grabbing Raphael's arm.
She then let go of him and offered a warm smile "It's ok... I don't think they will bother you. The bus stop is just right there turning the other corner... Thank you for bringing me here. Good night!" And just like that, she turned her back to him and started to walk away. Each step pressing Raphael's heart against his chest.
"WAIT!" The worlds came out of his mouth before he could stop them. She startled at the unexpected sound and immediately turned to him
"What?"
Raphael waited a minute so he could gather all the emotional strength to ask: "Can you walk me home?"
Clara smiled as she approached the mutant once again: "Is it too far?"
Raph took a minute to answer but instead said: "I'll pay you a cab when we get there." Clara hums and adds:" You sure? I leave pretty far." Raphael only nodded. Then she gave him the same silence answer. He couldn't mentally trace the path he had taken that night but he knew it was almost morning. The rain had stopped long ago but the air was much colder than when he left the lair, he was actually getting cold and wondered if she felt the same. They kept walking in silence until it finally hit him:
"What were you doing in the streets so late at night?"
"Oh..." She seemed surprised by his question, her voice a comparison that made him realize how low he sounded "I was on a date actually..." She said showing her teeth in a straight smile that indicated self-awareness, well that explained the clothing. "The guy turned out to be a prick, so I bolted! I was completely lost when I heard all the fuss the store guy was making... Thank god I found that mess, actually... I was getting pretty scared."
Silence as they got closer and closer to the lair's street door.
"... It was a complete coincidence to find you, actually... I was watching the rerun of your brother's interview today... I am actually in love with him! "she said in a ambiguous tone "Can you introduce us? Do you think I have a chance?" Raph finally laughed. Not at the idea that Mikey was charming enough to acquire the interest a woman like Clara, but at the absurd fact she thought she had to ask if she had a chance. With Mikey?
"He's also a prick." Raphael responded sharply but with a captivating tone to his voice. Then... She laughed. Raph couldn't contain his own grin.
The first sunbeams were about to appear at the horizon and when the red-wearing turtle finally reached the large metal door, he felt a relief like never before.
"I'll call a cab and get inside… So you know… The guy doesn’t bail because of me."
"Ok." Clara said, a light smile in her cheeks. "It was nice to meet you..."
"Raphael." He added after realizing she never asked his name did she knew it already?
"Hope to see you around soon."
Raph nodded with uncertainty and grabbed the metal knob. Clara's last words engraved in his brain as he crossed the long corridor that led to his underground home.

New transfer (Momo x F! reader)
Tumblr media
Hello!!! Lately I’ve been in my gay feels so I wrote this up. After seeing Momo in the most recent chapter, I couldn’t resist. I LOVE HER!! Anyway, I hope everyone is good haha. If there’s something you’d like to see please send me an ask :) I kind of liked writing this so if I’m bored in the future I might do a part two.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The cold air of September ran through the station, getting chillier as your train eased to a stop. You played your music and shuffled onto the train along with other commuters. The plastic of your phone case only insulated the heat on your clammy palms. You were haunted by anxiety and anticipation for your arrival at UA.
You were a transferring from another, less popular hero school in the Ito prefecture. The reason for your transfer was that both your teachers and parents believed that UA would better suit your education needs. You were not only top of the class, but also in possession of a very powerful quirk that you developed and honed at an incredible pace.
Your quirk was essentially the ability to manipulate metal. You called it ‘metal’ and chose the hero name ‘Hardware’. Your quirk was useful not only in an urban setting but almost anywhere. If there is a substance that is classified as a metal, you have control of it. Because of your quirk, you took the UA entrance exam by storm. Your parents first recommended this transfer when you showed them you could move the iron in your blood. You made one of your fingers turn blue in order to show them your new trick. Instead of impressed reactions and praise you were met with fear. Despite how much they loved and cared for you, they couldn’t help but fear what they weren’t ready to understand.
Their unwillingness to adapt to change also prompted you to avoid coming out to them. You knew you liked girls. And that was something you were okay with keeping to yourself, for now.
You pulled out an earbud to listen to what stop was approaching. You recognized the name and got ready to depart. You loved your phone and headphones into your backpack and clenched the straps. You couldn’t remember the last time you were this nervous.
The new term started a week ago. Despite the work they sent you, you would still be behind on lessons. You had no idea who your classmates were and if they would even like you. Probably not. Would you get bullied? Are the other kids stronger than you? Will you be the weakest? Was this a mistake?
Your thoughts swarmed as you were carried off the train by the crowd of commuters. Before starting up the sidewalk you took an envelops out of your bag. It contained your class information, directions, and your UA student ID. You stuffed the envelope under your arm and booked it to UA. You were told to get there early so the teacher could give you a run down of things. You tried to focus on your surroundings instead of your worries.
Before long you could see looming blue archway. The gold letters ‘UA’ glittered in the early morning sun.  You spotted three figures waiting for you at the enterance. Curiosity caused your footsteps to quicken.
The three spotted you as you approached and one came barreling towards you in a terrifying speed walk. “You must be our new classmate. Please allow me to introduce myself! My name is Iida Tenya and I am the class president of class 1-A.” His booming voice and large stature made you flinch. “I look forward to working with you!” He did a rigid bow to you and straightened up immediately. You swallowed tensely before carefully replying.
“My name is (L/n) (F/n). I look forward to working with you.” After you returned his bow your eyes moved to the other two figures accompanying him. There was a ragged looking man who seemed severely sleep deprived. You recognized him as the hero Eraserhead.
The sight to his right made your breath hitch. She was easily one of the most beautiful girls you had ever seen. She already was smiling at you kindly. Her dark eyes twinkled in an inviting and charming way. Her hands were folded in front of her, resting on her skirt. You could hardly take your eyes off her. Your heart kept as her melodic voice flowed from her welcoming smile.
“My name is Yaoyorozu Momo. I’m the vice- president of class 1-A.” She bent at the waist to give you an elegant bow. “I’m looking forward to getting to know you.” Her posture returned to the polished way she was standing before. You wiped your damp palms on your skirt and took a sharp inhale of courage.
“(L/n) (F/n).” You returned her bow as a way to hide the blush on your cheeks. “Thank you for your warm welcome.” Upon straightening back up you were greeted with her bright smile. You were planning on staring at it forever when Eraserhead spoke up.
“We spoke through e-mails but we haven’t been formally introduced. I’m Aizawa. I’ll be your teacher.” His posture was relaxed. With his hands in his pockets and his posture slouched. “Yaoyorozu will give you a tour of the dorms tomorrow when you move in. Today we will introduce you to campus and the rest of your classmates.”
“Thank you, Sensei.” You bowed to him and he nodded in return.
“Let’s get into the school. Other students should be getting here soon.” Aizawa started towards the elaborate building and left you, Tenya, and Momo to trail behind. Your head tilted up to gaze at the full height of the massive school building.
————————————————————
“Class. As you’ve noticed we have gained a new student. We’ll do quick introductions and then get into classwork.”
Aizawa shuffled from behind the podium and retreated to his desk. Upon sitting down he draped a yellow sleeping bag around his shoulders and watched you walk up the isle to the podium. The eyes of your classmates made your cheeks ignite. Your sweaty hands gripped the sides of the podium as you tried to find a way to speak through the knot in your throat. You scanned your new surrounding and met the eyes of Yaoyorozu. Her soft smile melted your worries. There was something so calming about her presence that even a look from her provided you with assurance.
“My name is (L/n) (F/n). I’m originally from the Ito prefecture but transferred here after the first semester of my old school. I look forward to meeting you all.” You have a small bow to your new classmates.
“What’s your quirk?” Your eyes snapped to the blonde haired guy in the back who practically growled the question at you.
“I can manipulate metal.” You weren’t sure how to respond. This seemed to satisfy the angry bastard.
“Sounds weak.” He slouched further into his seat and smirked. Tenya swiveled in his chair and outfield a stiff hand towards the boy.
“Bakugou- kun. Please have some respect for our new peer.” Tenya seemed tense. Was this guy always this exsausting?
“Just calling em’ like I see em’.” He shifted his slumped posture. You didn’t care what else he had to say and made your way to your seat. “Not even gonna argue.” He muttered.
You heard the noise of a small shuffle as Momo turned in her seat towards Bakugou. “How do you know her quirk is weak if you’ve never seen her in action?”. Momo waited for a reply.
Bakugou scoffed and looked out the window. Momo pointed herself forward. She then turned to you and you gave each other a bright smile.
After she faced the board once again you felt your face turn red. ‘That was…. kind of hot…’ You thought to yourself.
Your heart fluttered over the image of her smile as it replayed in your head the rest of the class period.
Once the bell rang, you knew lunch was next on the schedule. Due to your anxiety of the first day, you had memorized your schedule. You picked your bag up from the floor and scooted your chair out. A small elbow appeared on your desk. A classmate was leaning on your desk, head propped up on his elbow. His smug face was accompanied by greasy purple hair that looked like balls stuck to his head.
“Can I help you?” You asked. He kept eyeing you. You rose from your seat and slung your bag over your shoulder.
“Looking for a boyfriend? Don’t worry about not being my type. I like all kinds of girls.” He winked at you. You felt your face contort with disgust.
You were so appalled all you could muster out was “Ew.” Your response brought tears to his eyes and he retreated to the back of the classroom.
“Oh, (L/n)-san. Don’t mind him.” You heard Momo’s angelic voice from beside you. “Want to come eat with me an some of the girls? I’ll introduce you to them better.” Her radiant smile gave you no option but to say yes.
“Yeah! I’d love to. Thanks Yaoyorozu -san.” You gave her your best smile.
————————————————————
After a long first day, you had to go home and rest up for your move- in day. You still had to try to remember everyone’s names.
Because of your unfamiliarity with the area, you still had out your directions from this morning.
“(L/n)-san!” Your head turned to the source. It was Momo. “How was your first day?” She fell into step beside you.
“It went much better than I expected. You were a huge help, of course.” You noticed her cheeks held a hint of pink and her face wore an excited smile.
“It’s the least I could do! It’s part of my role as the vice- president, after all. Did you enjoy meeting the others?”
You had not only met the girls during lunch but a few of the guys as well. Many were kind enough to come up and say hello. Kirihsima and Shoji offered to do the heavy lifting for you tomorrow. And the girls promised you a welcome dinner with boardgames and a movie.
“Everyone is so nice. Thanks for introducing me.” Her smile grew warmer and she slowed to a stop. You paused and stood beside her.
“I’m so glad your first day went well. I’ll give you my number in case you need anything.” She fisted around in her backpack for a slop of paper and scribbled her number. She held it out to you and met your eyes with a warm smile. “I’ll see you tomorrow for your move in day. I have to head back to the dorms now.”
“Thanks for your help, Yaoyorozu- san.” The paper was clenched gently in your fist as you smiled at the beautiful girl in front of you.
“Please call me Momo!” She waved her hand as to say ‘no big deal’. She made your heart flutter.
“Sure thing! And please call me (y/n).” You stood for a second, just beaming at each other. “I’ll see you tomorrow, Momo.”
“See you tomorrow, (y/n).” While waving goodbye, you watched her turn around and walk further onto campus to the dorms. A wave of happy excitement flew through your body in anticipation of seeing her again.

Home || Jumin x MC - One shot
genre: angst, some fluff.
summary: You are staying at Jaehee’s after Jumin did something that made you really angry. While staying there, you start feeling sick and end up at the hospital. What you first thought was nothing to worry about, quickly turns into a nighmare that could change your relationship.
warnings: not graphic, but the story discusses blood and miscarriage
You weren’t really broken up.
Not really. Your things were still at the penthouse and you really weren’t planning on picking them up, but you were still mad at him. Until you could work those feelings out, the best way to avoid your boyfriend for a while. Thankfully, Jaehee had been kind enough to let you crash on her couch. It wasn’t really uncomfortable, but it smelt funny. You thought it was because of Jaehee’s habit of snacking while watching Zen’s musicals. Maybe there were some crumbles between the pillows, because every time you woke up, you were so disgusted by the smell it made your head twirl.
You loved Jumin. You really did, but you couldn’t help being so angry with him. You wanted you go to the penthouse, talk to him about what happened and fix things up, but you knew you couldn’t do this if you were still as angry and resentful as you were. You needed a couple of days away to melt down your rage and also to teach Jumin the weight of his actions.
That day, you were having breakfast on the kitchen table as you read some news on your Twitter feed. Jaehee had already gone to C&R, asking you if you wanted to send Jumin a message. You knew it wasn’t she didn’t want you there, but she had mentioned Jumin looked restless, more irritated and didn’t have the capacity to focus as much as he did before. You told her, yet again, you didn’t have anything to tell him. She nodded, pursing her lips and went to work.
When you finished eating breakfast, you decided to help a little by cleaning the house. You put on your headphones and started sweeping the living room. Just as you were almost done with it, a known song started playing, making you stop your movements to listen to it. Obviously Je Te Veux by Erik Satie had to come up on your playlist while you were trying your best at being mad with the man who had presented that song to you.
“Fuck you, Jumin Han” you muttered as you started sweeping more angrily than before.
You knew he hadn’t meant to hurt you, but he had. You knew it was part of his work, but maybe it shouldn’t be anymore. Or maybe… maybe you could adapt to it? You didn’t know what was the right answer. And when you knew it, you would return to Jumin’s apartment, if he’d still have you. A knot formed on your throat. Yeah, he would take you back. You were sure.
Almost sure.
As you were done with sweeping, you started cleaning the bathroom. That was when you first felt wetness between your legs. You checked the date and realized it was your period. Thankfully, Jaehee’s bathroom was equipped with pads, so you had no problem with washing your panties and putting a pad on a fresh pair. You kept doing the cleaning, thankfully not having any cramps yet. Half an hour later, you went to the kitchen, where you started washing all the dishes and putting everything in its place. You went to the bathroom again and realized there was a medium sized blood clot resting on your pad. You furrowed your eyebrows. You hadn’t experienced anything like that before, well, at least not a clot that big. It was probably the size of your thumb. You changed pads again, also noticing you were having a heavier period than usual.
You went back to cleaning, but an hour after that, you went to the bathroom again to find yourself in the same situation. This time, you knew something was wrong. But you didn’t like the idea of going to a hospital. Yes, your period was definitely heavier than usual but that didn’t mean it was worth a hospital visit. You changed pads, trying not to notice the clot was bigger this time.
Half an hour later, your pad was fully damped again. You felt like calling Jaehee, but that would mean Jumin would have to know about her hospital visit and you didn’t feel like seeing him in that moment. Especially not in this vulnerable moment. You changed your pad again and stuffed some more in your purse. As you were leaving Jaehee’s apartment, you took out your phone and sent a voice message to Zen, avoiding using the RFA messenger app.
“Hey, I’m… I’m okay but I’m going to the hospital. I’m a little scared?” you laughed nervously, hopping on the elevator. “Uhm, I’m having… how should I put this?”
You forgot how awkward it was for you to talk about your period with someone else. And a part of you thought maybe Zen wasn’t the right person after all. He was, after all, someone who wanted to present himself like a knight in shining armor, waiting to rescue their princess. And princesses didn’t talk about period or blood clots.
But fuck it.
“I’m bleeding a lot heavier than usual. Like, a lot. And I’m scared, so I’m going to the emergency room. Just… please tell me everything’s fine?” you added in a small voice.
You sent the message and hopped on a cab. A few minutes later, you received a text that simply read: “Which hospital?”
----------
“I hate to say this, but maybe you should have gone to that clinic that is a partner of C&R” Zen muttered, letting out a sigh. “They would have called you earlier”
“I hate you for saying that as well” you replied, shifting on your seat.
It had been an hour and a half and you were still on the waiting room and of course, you were still bleeding. It wasn’t the best hospital in town, but you didn’t want to cause a scene in a hospital or clinic C&R had a relationship with. You didn’t want to take the chance of having someone call Jumin and let him know you were there. But you had already gone through two changes already and you were afraid you were going to stain your clothes.
No, not really. The reason you were starting to freak out was because you knew what could be a cause of heavy bleeding. You didn’t want to think it was an option, but you knew there was a possibility it was a miscarriage. You swallowed thick, not wanting to entertain that option. You were young, even younger than Jumin, it didn’t make sense you were suddenly having a miscarriage. You weren’t even sure you had been pregnant. You couldn’t be-- your period wasn’t even late and you weren’t showing any symptoms of pregnancy, you would have noticed if you--
Suddenly, the memory of waking up to a smelly couch made you tense up. What if it really wasn't smelly? What if it was some sort of mild morning sickness? And maybe your bleeding was not actually your period, just an horrid coincidence on that day your body had decided to have a miscarriage. You felt your knee going up and down, not being able to do anything about it.
“MC” Zen insisted. “I can’t take this anymore, we need to go to St. Claire’s. I know it’s owned by C&R but there’s a reason the trust-fund kid always goes there, they treat him like royalty. And you’re whiter than when we first got here. I don’t know what’s going on with you but please, at least let a doctor see you. We need to get out of here” he insisted.
“No. They’re gonna call me any moment now”
“Fuck, MC…” Zen sighed, a hand going through his hair. “I don’t know what happened between you and Jumin, but this is your health that’s at stake. So, listen to me”.
Would Jumin take you back now that you were probably having a miscarriage? Would he blame her? Of course it-- it wasn’t her fault if that was the case but… how would he take it? Would he close himself, not letting her be a part of the grieving? Would he send her back, not wanting to be reminded of having lost his unborn child every time he looked at her?
You realized you were crying when you felt Zen taking your hand into his. You quickly wiped your face with the back of your hand, trying to hide how scared you actually were.
“Jumin, I’m with MC at the hospital downtown” you turned your head quickly at Zen’s voice and shook your head, trying to make him stop. “We’ve been waiting too long for a doctor, but…” you unsuccessfully tried to take away his phone. “Stop” Zen warned you. He went back to his phone call, “We’re going to St. Claire’s, tell them MC is on the way and she needs a doctor right now”.
Zen made a pause while you hid your face on your hands, hating how the situation had gone out of control. “Yes, send an ambulance. She’s not critical but she’s too weak for me to take her on my motorcycle”. Zen hung up his phone and helped her stand up, leaving the emergency room and heading towards the hospital entrance.
“Why would you do that?” you complained, taking your arm away from Zen, but still walking alongside him. “I told you I didn’t want him involved in this!”
“Look, babe, sorry but I wished you could look at yourself. You’re really pale, you’re losing more and more blood and while I hate that Jumin practically bought a clinic just so he didn’t have to wait, I don’t care if it means you’re getting that treatment too”.
You sighed and nodded, defeated. You were surprised you hadn’t felt dizzy or felt any sort of pain since all this nightmare had started. You just felt anxious about the possible miscarriage you could be having.
Ten minutes later, an ambulance from St. Claire’s clinic arrived at the front of the hospital. You reluctantly entered the ambulance, the paramedics asking you thousand of questions and already connecting you to some machines to see how you were doing. Zen told you he was going to follow the ambulance with his motorcycle, only obtaining a nod as an answer from you.
You explained your situation to the paramedics, who asked you to lay down so you could rest until you arrived to the clinic. There was a woman who had the softest voice and assured you you were doing just fine, but they could see what was exactly the problem once you arrived to the clinic. She kept trying to engage in conversation with you, trying to ease your mind about everything.
“Is it… a miscarriage?” you asked in a soft voice. The woman pursed her lips and you felt yourself breaking a little.
“We don’t know yet. We’ll know once we get there, don’t worry” she said.
She kept talking, trying to ease you but you couldn’t listen anything further than they didn’t know if you was losing your child or not. You didn’t care about anything else.
Before you thought, the ambulance came to a stop and when they opened the doors, you recognized the two tall men standing in front on the ambulance, one with black hair the the other one with silver hair.
You escaped from Jumin’s gaze, but perfectly heard him questioning the paramedics what was wrong with you. You didn’t understand a lot of what they were saying, but you did get to hear “gynecorrhagia”. What a wonderful way to put a name to something just so they didn’t have to say they didn’t know what caused it.
The paramedics helped you sit on a wheelchair and you were rushed into the clinic. Not even a minute later, you were in front of the gynecologist office. You heard the nurse explain to Zen and Jumin that he was the head of the Gynecology Department, and that they were prepping the room for you. You heard your boyfriend make further questions but even though his tone was firm and stern, you could tell how his voice wavered just a bit on the end of his sentences. He was scared. Maybe because he also knew what it could mean?
“The doctor’s ready for you” you head the nurse say to you, making you snap your head to her direction, startled. You nodded and you felt her wheeling you to the office. You looked around, seeing you were in a small hall rather than an office. You were helped out of your chair and once again, you felt yourself completely wet with blood. The nurse guided you to a small bathroom and gave you a hospital robe, instructing you to change into it.
Once in the bathroom, you took the chance of cleaning yourself up before changing into the robe. You looked at yourself in the mirror and realized Zen was right: you were in fact very pale. You washed your hands thoroughly and got out of the bathroom, where the nurse was waiting for you.
“I’m scared of staining these” you confessed, following the nurse to another door, presumably the actual doctor’s office.
“Don’t be, please. You’re going through a hard time, don’t think about that. Besides, those are disposable” she explained with a soft smile. You smiled back. “Do you wish anyone to accompany you inside the office?” she asked, before opening the door.
In that situation, honestly you couldn’t think why it was even an option. There was only one person you wanted by your side in that moment.
When you entered the office, the doctor smiled warmly at you and showed you to the examination gurney. She started asking you questions about everything, her soothing voice calming your nerves. You heard a knock on the door and then the nurse’s voice announcing Jumin was there. Thanking the gurney was not in front of the door and you were covered from shoulders to knees, you turned your head towards the door, looking at an awkward Jumin standing there, waiting for an indication.
“Hey” you muttered softly. Jumin looked at you, and for the first time, you could see how scared he was. He was doing his best at trying to hide it, but the way his legs were shifting his weight and how he was incessantly twisting his own fingers gave him away. “Come here” you said, holding out a hand for him. He walked to you, standing on your side while the doctor turned on one of her machines and put on a pair of gloves. Jumin took your hand and you squeezed it, trying to calm both of you.
The doctor warned you, but you still felt some discomfort when you felt the head of the ultrasound scanner entering you. You saw some incomprehensible black and white figures on the screen, wondering if you were supposed to see something.
“Well, I don’t see anything” she commented, making you heart sink.
“I lost it?” you quickly asked, your voice breaking down. Your hold on Jumin’s hand tightened and so did his, but you couldn’t bear to look at him in the eye yet.
“Lost? No, don’t worry. You didn’t have a miscarriage. The blood they took from you on the ambulance shows you weren’t pregnant at all” she explained. You felt your soul return to your body and pulled Jumin’s hand in front of your mouth, pressing light kisses to the back of his hand, whispering soft nothings, almost like a thankful prayer.
“So why did she…?” Jumin asked, his voice more neutral now.
“It was probably an hormonal imbalance” the doctor said, removing carefully the scanner. “Right now I’m going to ask for some IV for her so the bleeding stops. Then we’re going to do an exam on her hormonal levels so we can recommend some medicine in case she needs it”.
“Just like that? She’s… okay? She’s been bleeding all morning” Jumin interfered. You knew he did it out of worry, like a part of him wanted to be entirely sure you were healthy.
“The woman’s body is full or mysteries, Mr. Han” the doctor commented. “I’ve seen this before. In most women’s, is a once in a lifetime scenario, and they never present that problem again. Some may not even need medicine on the long run, but I’m still going to order every exam I can think of so we make sure she’s completely fine” she assured him.
You turned around and looked at Jumin, who still didn’t look convinced.
“Jumin” you said, his eyes looking right into yours. “I’m okay. You can rest now”. He pressed a kiss on the top of your forehead while you kissed his hand again. You felt incredibly happy to have him by your side, knowing you hadn’t lost anything and neither of you were going through that kind of pain.
The doctor excused herself, leaving the room as she gave the nurse some instructions you thought were about the IV she had mentioned.
“When the IV’s done… I want to come back to the penthouse” you said softly, looking at Jumin’s hand. You felt him chuckle and softly moved your chin so you could look at him. God, why did he have to look so handsome?
“Yes, of course. We’ll return home after this”
You felt your cheeks heating at the thought of the penthouse being ‘home’ for both of them.
“But…” you started. You smile on Jumin’s face wavered a little, but still let you continue. “I still don’t like when those women flirt at you. I know it’s part of your job and I know it’s not like you flirt with them, but it still hurt when I saw that woman with her hand on your arm, trying to gain something”
“I used to do that. A lot, I… I always let women invested in the corporate world to flirt with me when there was something for C&R to gain. I would, at best, use some gentleman mannerisms to keep that going. But I don’t think that’s something I want to keep doing” Jumin stated. He brought closer both of your hands and kissed the back of your hand, making you smile. “I’ve already told you I want to marry you. I agreed to your request about waiting at least a year before I officially ask you, but I can’t see how I would change my mind. With each day that goes by, I am only reassured with my desire to make you my wife. But I didn’t take your feelings into consideration with the way I used to run deals. I like to believe I’ve made my work known in C&R enough to stop using antique ways to make deals go through instead of trusting my negotiating abilities. MC, I can promise I won’t do that again”.
“Thank you” you smiled. “Now, please kiss me”
Jumin didn’t wait long before bending down and kissing you softly on the lips. Not being able to kiss that man for almost two weeks was definitely torture, not something you’d ever want to be without again. You were five months into the year you had asked Jumin to wait, but if he kept being such an extraordinary man like this, you were seriously thinking about cutting that time in half.
Once he stood up again, you noticed a playful smile on his lips.
“Now that you mention it, you called Zen before calling me?” he asked, arching one eyebrow.
“Hey, want me to go back to Jaehee’s?” you threatened playfully, making him chuckle.
The nurse returned to the room and helped you stand up, giving you a fresh robe for you to change.
“How are you feeling?” she asked.
“Better” you admitted. You looked back at Jumin and smiled. “But right now I just want to go home”.

It had been what? Two, maybe three days?
You had lost track of time. After so much time in the dark, it happens. Your mind just washes away and it seems like you're floating in space, with nowhere to go and nothing to do.
The blindfold in your eyes kept the light away and the restrains in your arms, made your whole body ache. The matress under you was actually soft, but even fluffy clouds could feel like a stone after being kept in the same position for so long.
Your throat was dry and hurt because of how you had screamed. Screams that were muffled by the gag you had in your mouth.
Every single spot those men had touched burned like a small fire and threatened to explode you. You were pretty sure you had marks all over. They hadn't been gentle when kidnapping you from the middle of the bloody street.
You was tired, scared and wanted to leave. Go back to your life. But you knew you couldn't. There was no getting out of there.
Taking a deep breath you tried to steady your heavy breathing, moving your hands against the restrains, to get maybe just a little more comfortable. Just a little.
That, was all you could do.

"Something new is up?"
That was the question Tyler had made when he got a call from Nik. It was unexpected, surprising. After what happened in Bangladesh many months ago, he had done a few other jobs, but none of them with her. Now, though, she seemed pretty determined to get him on board of whatever was happening. It intrigued him, made him frown while holding the phone against his left ear.
He had been laying low since his last mission, the elimination of a target that he completed successfully in Greece. That mission had been fast, too easy. Since that, he had been wasting all the money he got in alcohol and cigarettes. Living each day with the usual boredom of loneliness and headache due to the all the booze. The opportunity to get into some action and do something useful, sounded really good. Truth was, the idea of being fired at excited him, as twisted as it was.
That and all the cash that Nik said was at stake made him get into a plane two days later and land on Guadalajara, Mexico, where Nik had told them to meet. Now he found himself in the back of a rented apartment in a simple building, located in a poor part of the city. Description was a thing Nik valued a lot, and one of the things that made her so good at her job. The room was filled with people he didn't really know, although some of those faces were familiar from previous jobs. Over tables and armchairs ultimate technology they frequently used on missions had been gathered up, just waiting to be used when the operation began.
"Listen up people, let's begin" Nik said out loud, bringing all the attention to herself as everyone instantly stopped talking by hearing her voice. She was a natural leader, no doubt about that. Pressing a single button on the control of the projector that had been installed hours before, she made a photo show up there for everyone to see.
It was the image of a twenty year old girl. She was smiling to the camera as someone took a picture of her and the park she was in. She looked calm, happy. If her image was being shown there though, Tyler knew that something really bad had probably happened to that girl.
"Her name is (Y/N) (Y/L/N)" Nik said, after taking a step to the side to give everyone on the room a good view of the girl's face. "Her father is a US senator who's been a big name on the Congress for almost ten years" someone whistled, and others nodded in agreement. With only that being said, they already knew it would be a great case to work on. "Four days ago, she was kidnapped here in Guadalajara" she pressed the button again on the control, and a video started playing on the projector.
It was a security footage obviously, due to the black and white image and low resolution. In it the girl was walking on the street camly, carrying a backpack and wearing headphones. It was late at night, the corner of the footage marked 21:37. She was alone, and there was no one else on the street. That was the perfect opportunity for a kidnapping, Tyler thought to himself, and the response to that came seconds later.
A van approached the girl suddenly, apparently coming out of nowhere. Stopped by her side and before she could even do anything, the back door was opened and three masked men stormed upon her. She tried to run, but they had no trouble in grabbing her violently by her arms and legs and throw her on the inside of the van, leaving behind only her now destroyed phone. The whole thing happened in less than twenty seconds. No one noticed a thing, no one saw anything. That had been extremely well planned.
"Do we know who they are?" a guy with glasses Tyler had never seen before asked, analyzing with full attention the video that started playing again in replay.
"Negative. We couldn't get anything from the security videos and the family doesn't know specifically who could be behind it, but five hours later the Senator recieved a call" as Nik pressed the button again, an audio file started to roll and filled everyone's ears.
Senator (Y/L/N), we have your lovely daughter. If you don't drop the Border Control Project on the presentation day, she dies.
And then the robotic adapted voice was gone. That was it. Short, harsh and objective.
"What's the Border Control Project?" Tyler was the one who made the question, before anyone else did the same. With his arms crossed over his chest, his mind was working fast in taking in all the information he was receiving. He knew he would need them in the future.
"A project created by Senator (Y/L/N) to expand the police activity in the mexican-american border. If this project is approved on the mentioned presentation day, trafficking rotes will be affected, illegal transportations will be extremely lowered" Nik explained, dropping the control on the nearest table with a sight. "Dealers, politicians, traffickers, a lot of people could be behind it"
"So our only approach is to go after the girl herself" Tyler stated firmly, and the others agreed.
"Yes, we rescue her. And possibly in the meantime, figure out who did this. Senator said he will pay three times more if we do" some of the team members started clapping and Nik rolled her eyes, but had a smile on her lips. They were mercenarys, money was their greatest worry and desire.
"What was she doing in Mexico?" a middle aged woman with blond straight hair that was in the other end of the room across the australian, was the next one to make a question.
"She got a six month transfer to the local University. Student exchange happens at least twice a year between Mexico and the United States" Nik answered and then crossed her own arms over her chest. "We start the operation within two days. Tyler will do the field work, were going to give him all the support he needs. Meanwhile, we prepare yourselves. Got it?"
Everyone agreed and started to go to work, opening computers and printing files. Tyler didn't move, just looked around in complete silence. Nik was the one who approached him.
"You're good with this?" she asked, inspecting his features for any sign of denial.
He nodded, averting his eyes back to the projector where someone had again projected the picture of the girl smiling. Looking deeply into her eyes, Tyler sighted.
"I'm gonna need a whole file on her, anything you can find. When I get to her, I have to know or have something that will make her trust me"
He had no doubt. He would find her.

we could do it (you and i)
Tumblr media
pairing: kang seulgi + reader genre: fluff, angst / friends to lovers, idol!au | wc: 6,5k summary: This is not a story about how your dreams came true or how you find your true passion, no. This is a story about how you met her. Even in the chaos of it all, Seulgi was always the one you would end up with. song rec: a world alone - lorde / sofia - clairo
Is there a way to know exactly when a moment that will change your life happens? You remember very well the day were it all began, the starting point, but maybe at the time you didn’t know how big it was.
You were in your very last year of high school, not the best student and too uninterested about the world around you, when you got approached by some woman on the street that asks what you want to do when you graduate. It hits you then that you have no idea, never thought deeply about it and now what felt like a very far reality, was staring at you right in the face, about to explode.
All you wanted was to go home and forget about your future, have a good cry that lasts about and think that you are about to fail your entire existence but the lady offers you a better alternative, clearly unphased by your lack of response.
“Would you be interested in auditioning for an entertainment agency?” She asks and it’s a little suspicious, too out of nowhere but you accept the card she gives you, emptily promising to show up at an audition that was taking place next week somewhere you had know idea how to get to. She explains how it’s one of the big three entertainments and that they are looking for young girls to being training from scratch. A rare opportunity, she calls it.
For some reason you decide to do it and when the day comes you take the subway to the location she had said, finding hundreds of girls there, all of them probably ten times more beautiful and prepared than you but still, for some reason, you make in.
It’s sudden and terrifying how that changes everything and how it feels weirdly like luck. You were never one to believe in things such as destiny, but it feels like it. That’s the only way you find to justify what happens.
And now, this is not a story about how your dreams came true and how you find your true passion, no. This is a story about how you met her. About how it starts and how it ends.
There’s a storm happening that makes the whole sky dark with grey clouds and you’re sure it’s accompanied by thunders, but you can’t hear anything over the loud music playing in the room you’re in.
You had arrived at the SM Entertainment building at eight, your mother glued by your side as your hands got clammy with the anxiety that still bubbled in your chest despite already being accepted. There were a lot of papers to sign, instructions that they made sure you knew how to follow and bureaucracies that you tried to wrap your young head around but got a little confused by.
At 10am, a woman is introduced by you as the manager in charge of your trainee group. She looks young enough to still be a college student, but when she speaks there’s seriousness to it.
“The rooms are separated by schedules.” She explains, handing you a paper with what you assume is the schedule you’ll be following. “There’s four girls by room and one assigned leader that is in charge of making sure you stay on schedule.”
You mostly nod and ask few questions about things like food and showers, which she gives you short and direct answers to. She only cracks a smile when telling you about curfews and reminiscences stories about trainees that got caught outside after hours, making sure you know to not do the same.
When she shows you around the small dorm, you feel a little sad, like homesickness is already settling in your stomach. The room you are staying is has two bunk beds and a lot of things sprawled around, like hair brushes, clothes and plushies. “I would recommend keeping your things organized to avoid fights about stolen things.” Is the only thing she says about the mess as you set your things down on your bed.
There’s not even enough time to process all the informations that are thrown your way, because right after you leave the dorm and she takes you to the building where most of your training would be taking place.
You’ve never been one for superstition, but it’s an important day, the most important day that has happened in your life so far, and you can’t help but think that maybe the storm still happening outside is a sign, that maybe things won’t work out and that you’re not good enough to be here. Because there’s about fifteen girls dancing in the room while you stand feeling out of place and they’re all so good that it makes you feel extremely small.
There’s a bright blue wall with clouds on it right behind the girls, such a huge contrast to the storm happening that you decide that it’s probably a sign too, for your own peace of mind. Of what exactly, you are not sure yet.
When the song stops playing, the manager clears her throat and all the girls, who are reaching for water bottles and moving to sit on the floor, turn their heads to her.
“Girls, this is the new trainee, ___.” She introduces you. “Please look after her and make sure she’s well adapted. Seulgi, Seungwan and Hyerim, she will be staying in your room so I’m sure you girls will do your best to help with the schedule.”
They all say yes in unison and you can see a bit of nonchalant in their faces, even a bit annoyance, like they are tired of new trainees being introduced. Like they are tired of getting more competition.
The manager leaves and you’re left there, standing awkwardly not knowing exactly what to do with yourself but stare at the fake blue sky. The girls have moved on to talking in small groups or just stirring completely on the floor, trying to get a minute of relaxing before they have to move on with more practicing.
“Hey, __.” The sudden sound of your name gets you out of your trance, eyes following the source of it. “Come and sit here.”
The girl talking has a gentle face and there are three other girls around her, two of them laying on their stomachs and watching something on a cellphone. The third is smiling at you, eyes turning into crescents and you’re stunned by how cute she looks.
“It’s nice to meet you, I’m Seungwan.” The girl says when you sit down, crossing your legs and keeping a straight posture. “And this is Seulgi, we are your roommates.”
Seulgi, the girl that was smiling at you, mutters a small hello. You wonder for a second if she has been trained to look so friendly and comfortable.
“Hello, it’s nice to meet you too.” Is what you reply awkwardly with. Making friend had never been your strength, not when girls always looked so intimidating.
“We have vocal practice in like 20 minutes, and then we can have lunch.” Seulgi tells you, stretching her arms up and making the large t-shirt she wore ride up in the process. You try not to stare.
“The vocal teacher is a bitch so don’t take it personally if she says anything to you.” Wendy adds and it’s the first time that you laugh over the day, which makes you feel grateful.
The vocal teacher does end up hurting your feelings, but you don’t care that much because the other girls pat you in the back and tell you’ll improve with time.
In the weeks that follow, it’s hard getting used to the routine they set for you. You wake up at 5am, usually with Seungwan nudging your shoulder and  telling you to go shower. Then, you eat what they’ll allow for breakfast and walk to the practice building with your new roommates. It’s a repetitive schedule most of the days: dance, english classes, vocal teaching and more dance.
Doesn’t help that you can’t train with the girls you share a room with, because being from the build up program you have to learn the basics before you get to actually start following the same schedules as the girls that have been training for longer.
You end everyday exhausted and most of them wanting to cry, because it only gets harder and your legs don’t do exactly what you want them to, and your voice cracks sometimes and you feel like you’ll never be good enough. But sometimes, the times that make it worth it, the girls gather together in the living room and order takeout food without any of the managers knowing. Or one of them gives you a facemask just because she had an extra one and tells you how pretty your skin looks. Small things like that make it better.
It’s a slow process but you become closer to the girls, and at night when you miss home just a little bit more than usual, it comforts you that you have at least made friends over this.
And after a month, when you finally finish your basic training and can move on to training with the other girls they all cheer for you, teasing about how the baby had grown up too fast and congratulating you for improving so fast. It makes it all worth it.
Seulgi becomes a strong presence in your life. One day she wakes you up with an annoying song on her phone that stays in your head for the rest of the day. Another one, she asks if you want to have eggs for breakfast with her, and naturally you start eating together every day, peeling the sweet potatoes together before you have to leave for early morning dance practice.
On your one month anniversary of being a trainee, after you move to normal training, she gives you a funny card that says with a corny cursive font ‘Congrats on not giving up’ that you keep glued to a wall next to your bed. By the third month since you joined the company, you two are making jokes and sharing headphones on every break you manage to get.
It’s natural how you two become close. Like she says, it feels like it was meant to be all along. You became friends with all the other girls, sharing a dorm has the power of bringing people together, even amongst the fights over who has to wash the dishes and having your periods synced up to happen at the same time.
But even in the chaos of it all, Seulgi is always the one you would end up with. You have more in common that you would ever imagine and the conversation never seems to run short, and like some teachers say, if you weren’t out of breath during dance practices, they are sure the two of you would find a way to talk even there.
On free days you watch movies on a tiny phone screen, usually romantic ones that leave Seulgi sighing and with eyes sparkling while you just roll yours at the cheesiness. She calls you frozen heart because of that. Sometimes you’ll draw together, her teaching you about pointillism and you teaching her about watercolor and its wonders.
It’s amazing having a friend like that on a place like this, you often think. It’s almost a survival technique, having someone to rely on when practice goes on for extra hours, when you make a mistake and the world seems to fall upon you. It’s as if Seulgi came into your life to make it easier, to be the one that was meant to be by your side when things just got a little too complicated.
As for training, it continues getting harder and the thought of giving up crosses your mind more than two times.
“I’m so tired.” Seulgi complains as she plops down on the couch next to you. It's one of the improvements they made on the dance practices rooms over the years to make rest time more comfortable.
“Me too, I wish I could take a 12 hours nap.” You whine back, feeling exhausting beginning to slowly creep in.
She snorts. “That’s not even a nap anymore, it’s almost a small coma.”
“I said what I said.”
“You know what we should do?” She asks, voice mischievous, moving down to unlace her shoes and take them off along her socks “Not we, you actually. You should give me a foot massage.”
Her voice is joyful and playful as she puts both her legs on your lap and you do a whole scene of gagging and trying to push her away but not really meaning it.
“No way i’m massaging your stinky feet.” You joke and she pokes her tongue out at you.
“Shut up!” Her offended half shout makes you laugh. “My feet smell like roses and baby wipes, mind you.”
You bite your lips to avoid the smile that’s trying to spread on your face, doing your best to look unimpressed. “I doubt that profoundly, you just danced for 3 hours.”
“Pretty please,___, my angel from above.” She pouts, voice annoyingly high pitched and feet wiggling in your face. “Gimme a foot massage.”
You both burst out laughing after that, her silly cutesy voice too stupid for you to handle and the other trainees around give you both weird looks.
You end up doing it, of course. There’s not many things you wouldn’t do for Seulgi, and you know it’s the same for her. That makes you think again, that even with all the hard moments of this whole thing, she makes it worth it.
When your birthday comes around, Seulgi takes you to an empty cupboard she found on the 4th floor. It’s small and smells slightly like cleaning products, but still cozy enough for you both to sit down on the floor and lay your backs against the wall.
She smiles deviously at you, had been planning a surprise all week that didn’t take long for you to figure out because it’s hard to keep secrets when you are with someone most of the time. Her silly actions helped on giving it away as well.
“Close your eyes.” She whispers,  the smallest resquice of a laugh in her voice. You know what’s inside the bag she had brought along, it’s too predictable, but you still close your eyes because you know that’ll make her happy. And hell, maybe you’re a little excited about the whole thing too.
You hear the crumpling as she opens the bag and then what you think are attempts to light up a candle. There was really too much effort put into this, with her sneaking out to buy this cake after practice, and you shouldn’t think too much about it but there’s still a weird feeling in the pit of your stomach, and your hands are shaking just slightly.
When she finally tells you to open your eyes they are met with her perfect smile and a infamous overly colorful slice of cake with a number “3” candle on top placed in front of you two. It’s a cute cake, with sprinkles and a single strawberry. “Happy birthday!” She exclaims, and it’s adorable how excited she is about this. It makes you want to cry. “Congrats on turning 3 years old, you don’t look a year older.”
You scoff, letting out a laugh that mimics her as you nudge her arm. “Shut up. Why did you even get this candle?”
“I’m sorry that it was the only one available at the store.” She says, gesturing to the cake. “Now stop complaining and blow your candles so we can eat.”
When you go to blow them, she hurriedly tells you to not forget your wish and you just roll your eyes. You don’t believe in stuff like that, never did, but still you can’t help but wish for something as simple as more good days like this when you close your eyes.
It’s funny how celebrating your birthday in a cupboard with Seulgi makes you the happiest you had been in months. The way she thought about all these tiny details, from the cake to the stupid candle, makes your heart melt and once again you get the weird feeling in your stomach. A feeling that is not new, and that you think has just been growing bigger and bigger from that stormy day to now.
After you blow the candle you two eat the slice of cake in comfortable silence, mouths turning pink from the colored glacé and sprinkles melting into sugar in your tongues. It’s hard hiding how hungry you both are with the crazy diets they’ve been putting you on and this cake is like paradise compared to the sweet potatoes you eat religiously.
“That was the best cake in the world.” Is what you mutter after your last bite and Seulgi looks just as pleased as you are.
“Yeah, artificial strawberry flavor is my favorite now.” She says and your eyes automatically go to her lips, noticing how they are slightly more pink than usual from the cake.
She must have been doing the same as you because she suddenly moves closer, knees touching yours. “You have something here.” Her voice is soft as she says it.
It happens very slowly and very quick at the same time. She moves to remove the glacé from your lips with her thumb, bringing it to her mouth and licking it clean like something that only happens on the stupid dramas she watched. You can’t look away, amazed by the whole act but, still, when she tells you to close your eyes again, you do in a heartbeat.
You can feel as she gets closer and in another heartbeat she’s kissing you, just the press of her lips to yours gently.  Then it’s a million heartbeats, so fast you think your heart will burst out of your chest.
It feels new and like everything you wished for, like it was supposed to happen. It feels like the butterflies that were secretly living in your stomach this whole time are finally free, but still completely at her mercy.
She giggles when she breaks the kiss and you can’t help but do the same, both your cheeks as pink as the cake.
No one could ever know, that’s something you both agree on. And there’s not a need to tell anyone after all, having this as your own safe heaven is what you want, because if someone were to know you are sure that would mean the end, with not only hearts shattered but dreams as well.
Keeping it a secret is easy, more than you ever would think it could be. You two had always been close, so the too long and unnecessary touches are ignored and the nights slept in each other’s bed not a thing anyone frowned upon. What changes is that now she will press soft kiss against your lips when everyone is asleep on the quiet of the night, that the two of you will sneak out and hide in the cleaning cupboard and touch until there’s not a trace of skin unknow, until there’s only gasps and soft noises filling the room.
It’s what first love should be like, you think. With the butterflies and lingering eyes, the need to be close, the complete and absolute adoration and just blindly trusting someone with something as fragile as a heart. But at the same time it’s the fear of being caught, of not knowing if it’s right or wrong and not really wanting to know.
“What’s your zodiac sign?” You ask her out of nowhere one day, when you’re both sitting on your bed. Seulgi is taking full advantage of your pillow, legs on your lap while you are sat with you back against the wall.
It’s finally a day off, a very awaited one and you’re enjoying it inside because of a sudden rainstorm while some of the girls went out anyway because they had waited for too long. The dorm is relatively quiet because of that and no one bothers the two of you.
“I’m an aquarius, why?” She replies, sneaking a glance at you and raising one eyebrow. “Are you gonna make a compatibility test?”
You roll your eyes at her teasing. “No. I was reading about this thing called astrocartography and I wanna do it for you. Now tell me the hour you were born in.”
She tells you the hour while moving closer so she can see your phone screen and what you’re doing. “See, these are your lines and each of them represents a planet.” You explain when the results show up on the screen. “Like for example, mars is the planet of war, right? So in the places the mars line is crossing is possible that you’d have some kind of conflict.”
“Oh, there’s a lot of lines here.” She says, snatching your phone from your hands and using a finger to zoom in on the continents  “What’s the purple one for? There’s one that passes right through Seoul.”
“It’s the venus line,” You say as she puts her head on her shoulder,”  it represents love and the possibility of finding a lover. Something like that.”
She grins widely. “And I happened to have found you just here.” Her voice is teasing and you can’t help but laugh at the way she raises her eyebrows suggestively at you, pinching her sides playfully.
“You’re so silly.” you say before moving and pressing a peck to her lips. She takes it as a cue to do more than that.
Dropping the phone, she moves a hand to your cheek as she kisses you with a little more force but soft as always. She tastes like the chocolate you two shared earlier and the way her lips move against yours makes your mind go blank of any thoughts but the ones of her.
You like kissing her like this, when it’s not rushed and you can take your time sucking her bottom lip before your tongues are meeting in a slow pace.
“What would you say if I told you I’m in love with you?” She asks, a little out of breath after breaking the kiss and looking at you.
You blink slowly, looking at her and you think no one in the world would ever look as good as she does with rosy cheeks and puffy lips. “I would say i’m in love with you too, dummy.” You whisper, moving a strand of her hair out of her face. “You know that.”
“Well, you never said it.” She pouts and you giggle.
“If I said it as much as I want to you would be annoyed with me by now.”
She giggles and tells you that she’ll never be, while pressing butterfly kisses all over your face.
After four years of training with a group of 20 girls you get assigned into groups. Sooyoung, Seungwan, Joohyun, Seulgi and you. It’s exciting and you’re all tricked into the feeling of hope, getting a group name, a concept, stage names and endless more hours of practice.
The training gets harder somehow, 10 hours a day, 1, 2, 3 and step. 1, 2, 3 and lay down for a minute because you can barely feel your legs at this point. By the end of april you have the group’s greeting stuck in your head and are closer to the the ideal weight they set for you, your mind filled with the prospect of finally making it.
The next month Seulgi is announced as an official SM Rookie alongside Irene and they’re beyond entranced by how good just the small taste of a debut feels, following a different schedule from the rest of you and when you search their name on the internet there’s a sea of of praise and comments on how exciting their official debut is going to be. It’s a good start and it makes all of you excited.
You get closer to Sooyoung than ever, having become her roomate in the new dorm you five moved in. Irene and Seulgi shared a room, since their schedules fit together and Seungwan had the privilege of sleeping alone. It was still like the old dorm, with messes all around and the close friendship you all carried.
But sometimes, just sometimes,  you get the strange feeling that Seulgi is slipping away from you. Even if most nights she slides in your bed and kisses your worries away.
Still it’s weird when you go days without seeing each other and a tension sets in the air, one that makes you sick to your stomach if you think about it too much.
On the 27th of july, Red Velvet debuts with an exciting and colorful song. It’s a bit shaky, some mistakes here and there, but still a success as expected from a SM group.
Two weeks before that you walk inside an all white office and a man tells you that because of some internal issues and their thorough analysis, you won’t be a part of the group anymore. When you question what the issues were, they point out that relationship between female trainees were not allowed as it could affect the performance.
He explains how they found out about everything, from another trainee apparently, and can’t risk a scandal because of it, so the best solution was keeping the two of you apart from each other. His tone extremely professional and when he adds that even if you won’t be making into the group they still have exciting plans for you in the future, you feel like punching him in the face.
It’s was lie. A blatant and well executed lie, you tell yourself as you throw cold water in your face to try and calm yourself down. Crying in a bathroom is not by far the most humiliating moment you had in the last four years but it is definitely the one you felt the most vulnerable and broken.
You know the full choreography to the damn song and every word to it, your hair tips colored an annoying shade of purple that you absolutely hated stare back at you in the mirror and when you click on the video of Red Velvet’s exciting comeback, you’re not there.
Seulgi has little to no time to see you after the debut, she calls and makes promises and apologizes and cries with you. In the back of your head you know this is not her fault and you know she’s angry and sad too, but still you feel no comfort in her words like you used to. It’s like she becomes someone very far away that you can’t reach anymore.
Training goes from hard to unbearable. The looks you get from the other trainees makes you want to rip your hair out of your head, pity or mockery, whatever it is sets you in reclusion and from there your days are a blur of waking up, practice and sleeping.
When you look at the card glued to your wall, the cursive words ‘Congrats on not giving up’ seem to laugh at you.
You see her again a few day later. and she cries with you in the empty cupboard as you tell her you’re proud of how great she’s doing. You don’t have much time, you know it, there’s probably a show she had to attend or something like that.
She doesn’t know the truth yet, the real reason why you’re not in the stage with her. They probably told her a lie, used those pretty words about internal issues, because the truth would upset her too much, and the last thing they needed was an rookie unable to perform her best false positivity.
“I’m so sorry.” She sniffs. It bothers you profoundly because  it’s not her fault. You both know that.
“It’s okay.” And it’s not, you both know that too.
It feels like everything is melting away when she kisses you, like it’s escaping your fingers and you can’t grasp it anymore. This is over too, and it hurts. It hurts so much that you stop feeling it.
When she says she has to go, you nod, with promises of taking care of yourself and not giving up on your lips. There’s also a promise to see each other soon, and it’s empty as every other one.
You keep in touch with half hearted texts of “how are doing” and “thought of you today”. She apologizes a lot, for taking too long to reply, for not being able to make it to lunch with you again. All you do is tell her it’s okay and that you understand.
She’s busy, you understand that and are very well aware of it because it’s all over social media and the TV. Red velvet is the next big SM success and they are unstoppable.
Kim Yerim makes into the group after two years of training and for their second comeback. It’s bittersweet. More bitter than sweet, because as much as you like her and she’s cute and suits the group well, it’s still like a punch to your face.
They get their first tv show win with ice cream cake and the managers throw a little party on the old practice room to celebrate it. The thought of seeing Seulgi both excites and scares you, the last time you had managed to have an actual conversation had been too long ago. and there are a number of things you wanted to say. Good job, congratulations, I am proud of you. You deserve this, no one deserves this more than you. And they are all true, but instead when you finally see her,  you ask “Is it everything you thought it would be?”
It’s a vague question that could have many meanings but she understands it of course. She remembers all the conversations you two had about this, about this dream, when your ambitions were still the same.
“Not really.” Is her reply and you are confused, how is being in one of the most popular girl group is not all that.
“How come?”
“I don’t know.” She avoids your eyes, fingers playing with the hem of her pink tennis skirt. You keep your eyes trained on the blonde hair she managed to make work. “I always thought you would be by my side when all this happened.”
The cupboard feels somehow smaller than it did all those other times, making her feel as close to you as possible and your heart shatters again in million pieces. Again, there’s a lot of things you could have replied with, but this last year had shaped you into a person you’re not sure you know anymore.
“Well, it’s not my fault.” The words spill out of your mouth without you noticing and the regret is immediate when you see the flash of hurt that goes through her eyes.
She breathes out. “I Know that. I Know it’s not your fault. I’m just saying that in my mind things always played differently.” Her words are fast like she just wants them to get out already. “We would make plans and daydream about these moments together and now that I’m living them by myself I...I  keep catching myself wondering if you are happy.”
You look down, your eyes stinging from tears that you don’t want to shed. “I am happy for you.” Is that enough, you think in the back of your head.
She’s looking at you now, sighing with a pained face and the stage outfit she has on is too out of place for this conversation. “That’s not what I mean.”
“Well, what do you want me to say? That I’ve been having the time of my life being a trainee while everyone else is living my dream?” Your worlds are fast and if the tears start falling you don’t notice. “That it’s the best feeling of the world being lied to many times and exhausting myself over nothing? That on top of all that I can’t even be with you?”
Her eyes close and you want to get out of this cupboard, feel your skin itching to escape. “Please, stop.”
“I-”
She doesn’t let you talk. “I want you to do something about it.”
“What can i do? I’m lost and I don’t even know if i want any of this anymore.” your voice is desperate, defeated like a cry from help. Why would you keep looking for a dream that wasn’t even yours in the first place, you just adopted it for convenience. A child too scared to be nothing.
She comes closer as if that was possible, and moves a strand of your hair out of your face. “You say i’m living my dream but this is not it. My dream was for both of us to make it.” The tears just come out of your eyes non stop as she whispers the words. “Even if it’s not together I still want you to make it… Ii want you to be happy because if you give up, then my dream is over.”
Her arms embrace your body and you almost laugh because it’s been over a year but her hug still feels like home to you, there’s still comforting and calming about being in her arms.
“Do you remember when we would stay until 1am practicing that girl’s generation song?” She mumbles against your hair, making you laugh amidst your tears.
“Yeah,” You mutter,”  it took us a long time to get it right.”
She brings a thumb to wipe your face, a sad smile crossing her face. “And when I said I wanted to go home you asked me to stay beca-“
“Because it was only worth it if you were there with me.” You finish it for her but before she can reply there’s a knock on the door followed by a call of her name. They have to leave in 5 minutes.
“I think about that almost every time I’m on stage. How I want to see you there doing what we worked hard to get.” She says in a rush, “And I know it’ll happen. I'll see you on that stage and we’ll be together. Like we are supposed to.”
You initiate the hug this time, muttering a thank you and telling her you couldn’t possibly love someone more in your entire life. There’s two minutes left and she uses it to press a kiss to your lips, quick but sweet.
You both know that would be the last kiss you would share for a long time, but this time it doesn’t feel so much like a goodbye.
A month later your contract with SM entertainment expires and you leave without looking back. Two months later a new entertainment company scouts you and even if it’s smaller and a lot less known, you still feel good and excited like you haven’t feel in years.
The girls are nice and most of them don’t comment on the fact that you just left the biggest entertainment to be there. I’s pleasant even it the training is still exhausting and sometimes you still think about giving up, but you don’t.
A year later Red Velvet has a comeback, another success. You text seulgi for the first time in 10 months and it’s as short lived as you thought it would be but it still makes you feel happy to talk to her.
13 months later you debut in a group with six other girls and it’s a small success. The song is good and the concept suits you but nothing beats the overwhelming feeling of getting to do the things you trained so long for.
You knew you would end up seeing her one way or another, you just didn’t think it would be this fast. One moment you’re in the dressing room getting ready to perform live and the next your manager is telling you have to go say hi to the other groups that are performing to build relationships. On the way your group mates chatter on how excited they are to meet the boy groups and possibly getting their numbers, making you laugh alongside with them.
Not a lot of things could’ve prepared for when your manager opens the door and Red Velvet stands there. Seulgi stands there, a hair roller on her bangs and her eyes go up when she realizes someone has entered the room.
They all get up fast and it only takes a few moments for them to realize it’s you.
“____!” Seungkwan exclaims but you pay no mind to it. You can’t pay no mind to anything besides Seulgi’s eyes on yours. Your hands twitch, wishing you could go there and touch her, kiss her, anything.
In the back of your head you hear your manager introducing the group, the greeting coming natural to you and then your leader is handing them your album, which joohyun accepts with the promise of “taking  good care of ____’s group.”
You hug all of them after that and when it finally gets to Seulgi it’s like a deep breath of relief is left out. Like a weight is out of your shoulders. “You made it.” She tells you simply, a blinding smile on her lips.
“Yes, I made it.” There’s years of shared dreams and experiences in those words and in the hug you two share. You feel like you could drown in this very moment. “We finally made it.”
It’s not exactly what you thought it would be when you would lay down on your bed and look at the annoyingly colorful “congrats on not giving up” card. It’s not what the two of you would talk about for hours while laying down on the cold practice room floor.
But she’s here, and that’s enough.

Fight or Flight - Chapter 8: Regret
Pairing: Drake Walker x MC (Riley Liu)
Book: The Royal Heir (canon divergent from the end of book 2)
Word Count: ~3500
Rating: R (language only)
Summary: Thirty one hours since The Walker Absconding
Author’s Note: Shall we even pretend there is a posting schedule at this point? Oh well, another chapter has arrived. This series follows the Walkers, their friends, and Cordonia as a whole after they flee the country with their daughter during Barthelemy Beaumont’s attempted coup. To catch up on this series, check out it’s masterlist. (link can be found via my bio - sorry, Tumblr is once again not putting my posts with links in tag searches)
Tumblr media
Drake popped his headphones in, trying not to wake up Bridget as he pulled open a video on his new phone. He was also supposed to be sleeping, at least theoretically. It’s why Riley had gone into the bathroom a couple of hours ago - so that he could turn off the lights and it would be relatively quiet. If he slept now, after all, he would be able to drive through the night. But he’d been wide awake for the past three hours, and at this point, he wasn’t even sure if attempting to sleep was worth it. So he just laid in the dark, his daughter sleeping peacefully next to him. Thank god she wasn’t doing that whole sleep reversal thing she’d been doing last month, where she’d been waking up maybe a dozen times over night. Her being a good sleeper was maybe the one saving grace here.
Today had just been stomach churning since he’d left to go track down a car and supplies. He hadn’t known whether to be grateful or freaked out when he’d returned to the hotel this afternoon, and Riley had a list of things they needed to do typed up on her phone. While he was glad she no longer seemed like she was about to sink into a pit of panic, seeing her planning with this much intensity was just… strange. He couldn’t think of a time she had ever made such a detailed list. She always just adapted to the situation at hand. She never tried to shape the situation herself.
But between what she’d found in her “fugitive research,” and what Hana had told them when she called after the hearing, they were starting to come up with a plan. Hana had told them that Rashad was going to be sworn in as regent tomorrow and that Olivia was technically “investigating” their location at the moment. That as soon as Rashad took on the powers of king-regent, Olivia was going to disclose that Bertrand and Maxwell hadn’t “found” them at Lythikos, so she’d sent Hana to “check” that they hadn’t returned to Valtoria, but that she hadn’t found them there either. They were all repeatedly calling their old phone numbers as well, hoping to make the story believable when Rashad undoubtedly opened an investigation into their disappearance with Bridget.
But all this meant that arrest warrants could be issued as soon as tomorrow morning. The hearing wouldn’t take long, and no one was sure if Rashad would see things as a sign of an attack on all three of them, or if he would correctly deduce that they had made a run for it and willingly left the country with Bridget. Either way, their financial and phone records were likely to be subject to review. And that meant they needed to not be anywhere near Ioannina by the time of the hearing.
The issue was, they wanted to withdraw more cash before the investigation froze their accounts. This meant using the same ATM they’d been using one more time, at 12:01 am when it was a new day and they could withdraw their daily max again without giving anyone a new location to investigate. Then, it would be time to get in the newly-purchased hatchback and drive on to Xanthi, the city they’d chosen as their next stop. Small enough that no one would predict it as their destination, big enough that Riley, a woman of East Asian heritage who only spoke English with a still-persistent New York accent wouldn’t be immediately noticeable. Drake liked that it was past Thessaloniki as well. No one would guess they drove hours further into Greece than a city with an American consulate.
So, in preparation for that drive, Drake needed to be sleeping. Even after several years out of Manhattan, Riley still hated driving, and in all honesty, the thought of her behind the wheel in a country where she couldn’t read the road signs was not reassuring to Drake in the slightest. He wanted to be the one solely responsible for the driving. But that meant he should be napping now. But how was he supposed to sleep at a time like this?
In the past day or so, he’d gone from a very stable existence to literally plotting how to hide out from law enforcement. He’d embezzled money and bribed a used car salesman to look the other way and not require him to register the car for official Greek or Cordonian papers. He’d left the only home he’d ever known, not knowing if he’d ever get to go back. How could anyone sleep after a day like that?
So instead of sleeping, he was watching news coverage of Liam’s speech that he’d given only a few hours earlier. Speculation was rampant as to both why the vote of no confidence was called and as to who the acting regent would be. Who his daughter’s regent would be. Because for the past few hours, the 10 month old sleeping on the mattress next to him had technically been the Queen-Regent of Cordonia.
It was a strange feeling, knowing that going forward, Bridget would be listed as Queen-Regent Bridget in history books, her rule starting today. Liam’s request had kind of always seemed like simple bookkeeping before. Although Liam told the press that Bridget would remain next in line for the throne even if he had children of his own, Drake had always kind of assumed they would readdress the whole situation when Liam actually got married. It had seemed highly likely to him that Bridget would end up just being a temporary placeholder, someone needed to convey stability of the Crown until Liam had a kid or two of his own. And even if she had remained next in line for the throne, Drake never really thought he’d see her take on the title. She was only supposed to rise to that position after Liam’s death.
It was probably something he should have put more thought into, to be honest. But he hadn’t, at least not anywhere near enough. And now there was no great way to undo it. She was the queen-regent now. Abdication for her, as a minor with the title, would be a nightmare at this point. Even if her title was just through the Conclave, the steps that they would have to take to change things now, the support they would need from the assholes who just voted against them and Liam, well… Drake wasn’t counting on that happening any time soon.
He opened up the CBC app to watch another site’s coverage of Liam’s speech, but his phone started buzzing in his hand. The number flashing across the screen had a Cordonian country code, but it wasn’t Olivia or Hana’s burner numbers, which they’d already added to their contact list. This had to be either Liam or Maxwell on a new number. Taking a deep breath, he popped out the headphones and swiped to accept the call.
“Hello?”
There was a brief pause before Liam’s voice came through the speaker. “Hello, Drake.”
Drake didn’t know what to say. It was his turn to speak, but what do you say to someone you’ve known almost your entire life when they lost everything? When you’d let them down? After too many seconds, he finally managed, “So, you… uh, got our new numbers?”
“Yes. Hana and Olivia provided me with them.”
“Right. Well… good. You, uh… you should have our numbers.” Drake ran his hand over his face. He couldn’t be more awkward about this if he tried.
“Indeed,” said Liam, after a beat, “So, how are you all doing?”
“We’re okay, I guess. How are you?”
The pause was longer this time. “It’s been a long couple of days, Drake.”
The weight of that sentence settled over Drake, the guilt he already carried multiplying in that moment. “I’m so sorry, Liam.”
All Liam gave in response was a little hum of acknowledgement, so Drake kept speaking, trying to find some words that would make this better, that would make Liam see how sorry he was.
“We just couldn’t wait around, you know? We didn’t know how things were going to go down, and when Barthelemy started talking about taking Bridget, we couldn’t just risk that, and so we had to do something, right? And I know this leaves you in a tricky spot, but you’ve gotta know, I wish… I don’t know, that we weren’t doing this to you, I guess? But… it’s just fucked up all around, isn’t it?” Drake knew he was rambling, that he'd basically spewed out a whole bunch of garbage, but he just didn’t know what else to do.
“What do you want me to say, Drake? You’re right; the decisions you and Riley made have made things much more complicated for me. Are you looking for me to say that I don’t blame you? That I support this course of action?”
“What else were we supposed to do?” Drake asked. He could hear his voice raising slightly, and he glanced down, checking that he hadn’t woken Bridget, but she was still passed out.
“I told you back when you were trying to have a child that if it ever became too much, to inform me, and we would reserve the proclamation.”
“Are you really trying to tell me that in the middle of everything that was happening yesterday, it would have been a good time to pull you aside and ask to undo all that shit?”
Liam let out a sigh before he answered, “It seems like that would have been preferable to you deciding to commit treason.”
Drake slammed his eyes shut, trying to keep his temper in check. Liam was already dealing with a lot, and he didn’t want to make things worse, but his words were so frustrating right now. “We didn’t even know if you would have the power to undo any of it after that vote.”
“You could have at least waited until we knew the results of that initial hearing. At that point-”
“What if the justice had decided you had no power last night instead of today?” Drake interrupted. He saw Riley coming out of the bathroom and back into their room. She obviously must have heard him on the phone. He just shook his head, trying to reassure her as he kept talking to Liam. “That’s a big fucking gamble to ask of us, Liam.”
“Fine, then some middle-ground or compromise still would have probably been better. You have to know how ill-conceived this scheme you’ve agreed to is, Drake.”
“What would you suggest, then? Sitting around, just waiting to see if we got to keep our kid?”
“Of course not. But if you get arrested and extradited back here, you will absolutely lose custody of your daughter. I would urge you to consider that fact. Additionally, Rashad is not going to be interested in becoming some sort of surrogate parent to Bridget over the next few months.”
“Is that supposed to make me feel better? That the man you have lined up as my kid’s regent has no interest in caring for her?” Riley mouthed “What?” at him from across the room, but Drake just waved his hand and shook his head again. He’d have to fill her in later.
“My point, Drake, is that Rashad would likely be very amenable to you and Riley staying with Bridget in the role as her caretakers and-”
“Stop. I’m not going to listen to that shit, okay? You know that’s not the same. You fucking know it, Liam.”
There was a rough sigh before Liam spoke again. “Fair enough. But you have to understand that you have put me in an awful position. And I’m just trying to find a way to minimize the damage caused by your selfishness here.”
“How is looking out for my wife and kid selfish?” Bridget squirmed slightly next to him as his voice climbed louder yet again. Riley must have noticed, because she scurried over and tucked her against her chest, muttering soothing words against the top of her head, trying to keep her from waking up.
“Did you think about how fleeing the country would impact anyone? Your citizens in Valtoria who no longer have a regional leader? The people of Cordonia who no longer have an heir to the throne? Your friends who have advocated for you and your family time and time again? No. You just left. You only thought of yourselves. That is the dictionary definition of selfish, Drake.”
“I’m sorry, but my family comes first. This isn’t fucking up for debate.”
“Well, some of us don’t have that luxury.”
Both Drake and Liam were silent for several seconds. Drake took a shaky breath, trying to get his emotions back under control. “Liam. I’m sorry. I really am. I never wanted to do this to you, and I know you are left cleaning up the pieces here, but I am not going to come back just for Bridget to get trapped inside the country and possibly taken from us.”
“Drake, don’t be so-”
“She’s queen-regent now, so no way we don’t get stopped at the border if we came back and tried to leave again, right? In fact, I bet we wouldn’t be allowed outside the palace with her, and that’s if we’re allowed to be alone with her at all-”
“Now you’re just being dramatic-”
“Am I? Because to me, it feels like you want me to come back and hang my hat on the hopes that Rashad needs a couple of nannies. I get the risks we are taking here. But at least we have a shot of staying together as a family this way.”
“Look, I understand that this is upsetting and frustrating. I’m upset and frustrated, too. All I want is to try and create a united front here. If we are fractured and divided, it is worse for everyone in the long run. We all want what’s best for Bridget.”
“You aren’t part of any ‘we’ here. She’s not your kid. You don’t get a say.”
The silence on the other end of the line was awful. Riley climbed onto the bed and leaned up against the headboard. One arm still held Bridget tight to her chest, but her free hand snaked behind him and rubbed soothing circles between his shoulder blades. It just did little to calm him. He didn’t know if more of his anger was directed at Liam, for presuming he had any say here, or at himself, for getting defensive when he was the one who had hurt Liam and put him in this position.
“I have never interfered in any parenting decisions you or Riley have made with regards to Bridget. In fact, I have given you both an unprecedented amount of freedom and control, knowing that it was an unusual situation. But it seems to me like we have nothing further to say to each other at the moment. You are unwilling to discuss the bigger picture here.”
“Liam, don’t-” Drake started, but Liam just kept talking.
“I understand why you’ve taken this course of action. But it is apparent that your priorities are only your daughter, whereas I need to focus on Cordonia as a whole. So, I think at this point we both need to just devote ourselves to those tasks and not worry about each other.”
It was a dismissal. A line in the sand. Whatever inner circle Liam had, Drake was no longer a part of it. He let out a sigh and swallowed roughly. “I am sorry, Liam. I just don’t know what you expect me to do here.”
“I don’t expect anything of you, Drake. You should just do what you feel is best for your family, and I will do what’s needed for our country.”
“Come on, it doesn’t have to be this way. I still want to help-”
“No offense, but a couple of fugitives are not likely to be a great resource to me at this point. This isn’t a punishment, Drake; it’s just the reality. We’ve both made the choices we needed to make, and now we both need to deal with the consequences. I need to remain focused on campaigning to regain my title, and I’m not going to have the time or energy to devote to aiding your run.”
“I’m not asking for your help, dammit. I just want-”
“What do you want, Drake? You don’t get to have this both ways.”
“I want… I want us still to be friends.”
He heard a heavy sigh before Liam spoke again. “Of course we are still friends, Drake. We just are headed in separate directions at this time, it would seem. You now have this number, though. You can reach me if you need to, and I will do the same.”
“Liam, I-”
“I wish you and your family the best; I really do. And if you change your mind, you can come find us in Lythikos.”
Drake closed his eyes. There was no salvaging this. Liam was boxing him out and closing the door. He was pretty sure having Liam screaming at him would have stung less. “Alright, I get it. Good luck with everything, okay?”
“Same to you. I really hope you don’t regret your decisions here and that you all can remain safe.” And with that, Liam ended the call.
Drake placed his phone on the bed and leaned forward, dropping his head into both of his hands. He swallowed several times, trying to break up the lump in his throat. He was very aware that although Riley seemed to be in a better spot than she was the day before, watching him cry over Liam was not going to instill much confidence. No need to make things more unsettled.
After a few moments, he took a deep breath and sat back up. Riley was staring at him, head cocked and eyes full of worry. He just shrugged and shook his head. There wasn’t much to say, really.
“Here,” Riley said, shifting forward and passing Bridget to him.
“I don’t want to wake her,” he muttered, but Riley continued, sliding Bridget into his arms before leaning against his shoulder, her hand slipping along his neck and her fingers threading through his hair.
“She’ll fall asleep in the car,” she said. Drake watched as his daughter blinked up at him, her face scrunched up like she was going to start screaming, but she relaxed and started to drift back to sleep when he pulled her against his chest and tucked his head on top of hers.
He just held her for maybe a minute, not saying anything. Riley was quiet as well, her fingers continuing to trace little patterns across the base of his scalp. Eventually, she tilted her head against his shoulder and whispered, “Do you want to talk about it or not?”
“No,” he breathed out, “not… not now.”
He felt her nodding, and her other hand settled on his knee. “Okay. Thank you, by the way.”
“Walker, it’s-”
“You don’t need to say it’s nothing. And I know you don’t want to talk about it now. So just… thank you.”
Neither of them said anything for a long while. They just sat there, trying to brace themselves for the reality of the next 24 hours. They would officially be under investigation and likely be charged with kidnapping of the queen-regent. This was the point of no return, far more than any decisions they’d made up until this point.
Oddly enough, Drake felt more confident in their plan than he had even before. As upsetting as his talk with Liam was, it had somehow helped him see why Riley was so reluctant to rely on anyone outside their family. Something about hearing Liam discuss the risks they would be facing in Cordonia as if they were nothing. As if living under the same roof as Bridget should be enough. As if they had time to wait for things to unfold. Well, it made it very clear that they saw what could be compromised and what couldn’t very differently.
He wasn’t sure how long they sat there, but eventually Riley sat up next to him. “Did you get any sleep at all?” she asked as he turned his head to look at her.
“No, not really.”
“Well, we better get going then so we can get some coffee before we hit the road.” And with that she slid off the bed and started gathering their few bags of belongings.
She was right. It was time to move on. So he gently clicked Bridget into her new car seat and did one last scan of the room, making sure they weren’t leaving anything they needed behind.
“You ready?” Riley asked.
“Yeah, Riley. Let’s go.”

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” — Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (1813)
✧・゚: *✧・゚*:・゚✧*:・゚✧・゚: *✧・゚:・゚✧*:・゚
It was in freshman year of college, the sixth week of classes, in Shakespeare for Theatre Performance Majors (THEA 200), halfway through the class period, just as the class prepared to perform their first monologues. You’d wanted to be assigned one of Prospero’s speeches from The Tempest. Instead, Jisung got to play Prospero and you ended up with one of Rosalind’s clever monologues from As You Like It. Not that you disliked Rosalind as a character, you simply wanted to have the fun of 1) not playing a girl for once in your life, and 2) wearing a long robe and getting to wave around a long staff. (There are few things that delight more than strutting around like some self-important wizard).
You did your best with the monologue, pretending to hide behind a tree at times and speaking to an imaginary Orlando at others. You were as pleased as a cat who’d caught a canary with how well you’d performed, and the fact that your professor gave few notes made it all the better. You liked being the best at anything you did. Jisung was called up to perform after you, and he had brought a robe and a staff. You scoffed a bit because, until that day, he’d been a fairly good actor but nothing extraordinary. Oh, how wrong you were. Yes, his participation in class thus far had been exemplary, his integration of notes seamless, and his general affect lighthearted and kind. But again, he’d only been a fairly good actor, nothing extraordinary. So, seeing him play Prospero as he called down the elements to wreak havoc at sea was unexpected, to say the least. Jisung seemed to put every ounce of energy he had into the performance, and the class clapped when he finished. He, like everyone else, had received notes from the professor, but they were cursory comments. Jisung had done the proper research to play Prospero as well as he could, and then presented the monologue better than you ever thought possible—from a college freshman, that is. And, you hated to admit, better than you could’ve done.
Thus, your rivalry with Han Jisung began.
At first it was distinctly one-sided, but you performed so well on the mid-term that Jisung noticed he wouldn’t be the sole star of the class. From then on, you and he vied for many of the same scenes to perform, the leading roles in the plays and musicals, and even the chance to mentor younger students once you were upperclassmen. Also, you consistently tried to perform better than each other in everything you did. The unofficial title of Best Actor in the Department (created by you and Jisung for your own purposes and, somehow, represented by a child’s gaudy tiara) bounced between the two of you. It must be said, though, it became more and more like a game with your steadily maturing attitudes and values. However, the one thing you both flatly refused to do was play love interests. If the two leading roles in a play were love interests, you would find different roles for which to audition to avoid that awkwardness.
And now, you were a senior and the reality of your impending graduation had just set in.
As you walked down the hall to the costume shop for your shift, your best friend and roommate, Miri, caught your arms and swung you around.
“Y/N! Babe, did you see the posting? They’ve announced the next production!!” Miri was practically bouncing up and down as she spoke, which wasn’t unusual for her. “It’s a new adaptation of Pride and Prejudice—who are you going to audition for?”
“Wait, really? Pride and Prejudice? I didn’t even know there was a stage version of that,” you said as Miri swung your now linked hands back and forth. “Hmmm, I guess I could audition for Jane? I don’t think I’d go for Elizabeth, since I really don’t feel like carrying a show next semester, you know?”
“But you’d make such a good Elizabeth Bennet! You have to audition for her!” Miri pressed you.
“Mir, no, I don’t want to have too much going on. Jane will be enough for me. Plus, I’m sure everyone will want to play Elizabeth—she is the lead, after all,” you said, finally extracting yourself from your friend’s grasp.
“But Y/N—” Miri whined.
“Come on, I want to ask if we’ll have to do extra shifts in the costume shop with the show coming up,” you interrupted and continued down the hallway.
When you got off from your shift sewing and repairing garments used in the last show, you went to the audition sign-up sheet on the Theatre Department Message Board. You saw a small knot of people huddled in front of the board, all waiting excitedly to put down their names. You joined the group just as Jisung sauntered up and stood beside you.
“So, Y/N, should we break our rule and go for Elizabeth and Darcy?” Jisung asked, knowing full well you’d never agree to it. He liked to tease you and you liked to tease him, just as long it didn’t end up as flirting. That would be bad.
“Jisung, you know that’s never gonna happen. I am never going to play love interests with you. My first choice is Jane, and after that I’ll just let Professor Greystone decide,” you said as you rummaged in your bag for a pen.
“Ah, the calm and lovely Jane . . . so you’d rather have a simpler role, huh? Too busy this year?” Jisung teased.
“No,” you replied sternly, “I’d just sooner have less to worry about than more. Who are you auditioning for, anyway? Wickham?”
“Nah, I think I’d do best as Mr. Bennet—play to my natural wit,” Jisung said casually, sweeping his hair up off his forehead. “It’d be perfect!”
“Sure, sure. Whatever you say, Jisung.” You’d finally found a pen and began to write your name and your role of choice under an audition time.
Just when you’d finished, Jisung snatched the pen from your fingers. You were about to protest, but he’d already added his name to the list. Handing the pen back to you with exaggerated care, Jisung said, “See you at auditions, then, Y/N,” and strolled down the hall like he didn’t have a single care in the world.
You quickly glanced at the audition sheet again, and sure enough, Jisung had signed up for the slot right after you. Damn, that had to be the worst luck ever.
Two weeks later, the Department held auditions on Thursday and Friday afternoon in the main theatre. Most students auditioning were familiar with the space, especially those, like you and Jisung, who had performed in it before. The director, Professor Greystone, clearly wanted to see how each person reacted and adjusted to the size and acoustics of the theatre throughout their audition. The long hallway along the back of the theatre was full of students waiting for their time slot. It was eerily quiet, save for the occasional mutter as someone cursed themselves or their chosen monologue for one reason or another. Every fifteen minutes, the door would open to free one student only to swallow another into the maw of the theatre scant minutes later. All looked less stressed coming out than when they went in, but the tension in the air was thicker than strawberry jam.
You’d been thinking about the auditions for nearly every waking moment over the past two weeks. Jisung’s comment about playing Elizabeth and Darcy had, somehow, stuck in your brain like the worst kind of repetitive song. There was a part of you that wanted to play Elizabeth—she had some of the wittiest responses to the hidebound and often dull comments made by those of her social circle, and you aspired to be as quick-witted. But, you didn’t want to risk being cast opposite Jisung. You didn’t think you could bring yourself to act, truly act, even remotely interested in him as a lover. You leaned against the wall, reading through your monologue and your notes for comfort more than anything, trying to clear your head of all else. The temptation of playing Elizabeth just would not go away, though. After another five minutes of fruitless reading and rereading, you paused. What if I did audition for Elizabeth? you thought, scarcely daring to even think it. Jisung surely wouldn’t audition for Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, right? He wanted to play Mr. Bennet so he could, in essence, play himself. It wouldn’t hurt for you to add Elizabeth to your list of potential roles—it was just another option. You’d been cast in enough leading roles in the past that there was a good chance Professor Greystone wouldn’t cast you in one again. Right?
“Y/N,” came the sing-song voice in your ear. You had to fight the urge to hit Jisung in the head as you glared at the young man who made it his business to annoy the daylights out of you.
“What, Jisung. What do you want,” you hissed under your breath, trying not to disturb the ten other people still waiting for their turn. “I’m trying to concentrate.”
“Oh, just saying ‘Hi.’ Break a leg, Y/N! Hope you get the part you want.” With that, Jisung walked back down the hall to sit on the floor with his ever-present headphones pulled down over his ears. You guessed it helped him filter out distractions. Although, it did make Jisung seem especially cocky, though, as if he didn’t need to study his lines or do anything else before an audition.
After twenty minutes or so, your audition time arrived. Of course, Professor Greystone and the other faculty had some general questions for you before you performed. They made it seem like part of the audition process, but the questions were really an excuse to let students adjust to the space. No matter one’s years of experience, the additional time always helped. Thus, the questions were simple. Yes, you’d read Pride and Prejudice—several times, in fact. No, you hadn't been aware of a stage adaptation before it was announced for the spring. No, your spring schedule was not full yet.
“Do you have any other questions, Y/N?” Professor Greystone asked, setting down her pen for a moment.
“Well, yes. Could I add Elizabeth to my preferred roles, please?” You smiled sheepishly, knowing Professor Greystone had probably expected this.
“Of course, Y/N. I’ll consider you for the role, in addition to Jane,” replied your professor. “Could you perform your monologue for us now?”
With that, you took a deep breath, lowered your head, then raised it in character.
And then, you were done. You emerged from the theatre, a bit tired but happy with your performance. Jisung, who really was acting like your shadow these days, waited outside the door for his own audition.
“Break a leg, Jisung. You’d do wonderfully as Mr. Bennet,” you said, surprising even yourself as you gave the compliment.
“Thanks, Y/N,” Jisung said bemusedly as he watched you gather your things, settling your sweater and backpack on your shoulders. Still staring into space even after you rounded the corner at the end of the hall, Jisung bit his lip. Should I go for Darcy? he thought. There’s no way Y/N would audition for Elizabeth. She’s too scared we’ll end up being cast as lovers. Chuckling to himself, Jisung methodically put away his headphones, straightened his clothes, and took a deep breath. Opening the stage door, he thought, Hell, I’ll do it.

It’s Just A Spark Ch. 9 - Night Shifts
Gobber couldn't believe his eyes. What had originally started as a casual glance out the window had spiralled and now consisted of him staring down at the sight on the street in front of the fire department in parts fascination and parts complete and utter disbelief.
There he was, his colleague who might as well be his own son, the boy with the gapped front teeth and the scraped knees, the young man who was so busy reading that he forgot to eat sometimes, and the man who had told him, only a few months ago, that if his fate was to become an old cat lady it would be fine with him - beaming at the young woman facing him. She had blonde hair, tied up to a ponytail and was dressed, similarily to him, in sports clothes. They were still talking as they came to a halt in front of the building, both smiling at each other.
And of course, Gobber knew that this was Astrid Hofferson.
He watched Hiccup - Hiccup - grin down at her and gently press his lips to her cheeck (Gobber almost had a heart attack), then shortly hug her and turn around to walk up to the building, still grinning from ear to ear.
Well. Gobber remembered the first time the young woman had set her stove on fire. He remembered the exact expression Hiccup had had on his face and the way his eyes were flickering to the side when he'd mumbled something about his ears only being "this red, Gobber, because we were just near a fire, it was hot in there" after they had already been outside again for at least five minutes.
Gobber tried to act normal as the door opened and closed with a click.
"Morning!"
"Well, well, well, look who finally decided to show up to work!"
Hiccup placed his phone and headphones onto his desk, ducking away from Gobber's prosthetic arm.
"Sorry, I got held up."
"Yeah, I could see you getting held up alright - in the arms of a certain young blonde, I believe?"
He watched Hiccup's cheek flush and laughed, giving him an enthusiastic pat on the back.
"Was about time, boy! You were one arm and three cats away from becoming me."
Hiccup snorted, "Yeah, right. Don't think having a girlfried will deter me from adapting that lifestyle."
There were not many things you could get past Gobber without noticing. And words, no matter how fast- or low-spoken were definitely not on that list.
"Girlfriend now, eh?"
"I, uh - I mean - oh, man."
Hiccup looked at him, a bewildered expression on his face as if he'd only realised this for himself just now, his hands already flying up to his hair.
"Ooh my God, Gobber, she's my girlfriend. She's my girlfriend," he repeated as if this alone had been something he had never thought to actually be possible.
"Oh, boy," the older man chuckled upon seeing Hiccup's disbelief change to surprise to complete and utter joy.
"Astrid. Hofferson. Is. My girlfriend."
"Yeah, how'd you do that? I'm surprised you're able to hold up a conversation with that vocabulary you've got yourself, boy."
Hiccup had not really thought about this earlier when Astrid had accompanied him back to work instead of his apartment, but now, standing in front of his locker next to the bathroom, his only options for the monthly meeting with the mayor and comissioners a crumpled-up old shirt with Toothless' handiwork at the hem and gym shorts, he regretted not having stopped by at his apartment prior to this.
The young man uttered a curse on his breath but knew he didn't really have time to explore any further options.
So he quickly grabbed the shirt, returned to the bathroom and pulled it over his head, stepped out of his towel and put the remaining clothes on.
He couldn't wait until this day was over. The morning run had energised him, but a nine-hour response-shift ahead and a two-hour meeting were already pretty high on the list of things that would use up that energy.
Thinking about said run - or rather, its aftermath- , however, sent his heart spiralling and made him grin at his reflection in the department's bathroom mirror.
She'd said yes. To being his girlfriend, essentially. Or had she? Had she misunderstood him and had only agreed to an extended status of "just dating"?
Oh, God. Suddenly Hiccup didn't feel all that confident anymore.
"Okay," He leaned on the edges on the sink and stared at his ruffled, still wet-haired reflection. "Stop it. Get it together. Just ask her tomorrow, just to clarify."
Yes. Just to make sure they were on the same page.
His thoughts went - in an effort to take his mind off the question of their 'status' - over the preparations left to be made for their date. He'd have to sweep the flat over before 15:30, and clean the bathroom thoroughly. Also maybe dust off the shelves. Get something to wear - oh, no. He remembered his last confrontationnwith his wardrobe situatuon.
This was their fifth date.
He was out of shirts.
Shit.
"Hey, Gobber, you ready to-" Hiccup broke off when he saw Snotlout at his desk, waving at him.
"Yo."
Hiccup stepped in further, furrowung his brows in confusion.
"Where's Gobber?"
"Went to get lunch."
"What? The meeting's in five minutes, and we're already running late! When did he leave? Did he say anything about when-"
"Woah, take it easy, cuz," his cousin interrupted him lightly and spun his chair around. "Gobber's been late to these meetings since they exist."
Hiccup exhaled and chuckled, sitting down next to the dark-haired man.
"Okay, true. How's your morning been?"
"It was okay. Pretty chill. I took Hooky out for our morning walk - did you know Fish is out of town?"
Hiccup's head perked up. "He is?"
"Yeah, the café's all closed up."
"Huh. No, he didn't mention," Hiccup leaned on his desk and squinted his eyes at his cousin. "He usually always lets us know."
"Maybe something urgent came up and he's not ready to talk about it yet?" Snotlout wondered aloud and leaned back in his chair, staring up at the ceiling. "I hope he comes back soon, I could kill for a plate of his waffles."
Hiccup smirked. "He'd kiss you again if you told him that in person."
He knew his cousin would never admit it if he asked, but it was quite obvious, even to Hiccup. Snotlout himself blushed, grumbling,
"It happened once, okay? And it obviously didn't mean anything to him, since he never brought it up again. SO," he pushed himself back and reached for his water bottle, fiddling with the lid with some degree of suppressed fury. "I'm not going to either."
"Alright, sorry."
His cousin sighed, his mood lightening up again. "It's okay. Just don't … tell him."
"You have my word."
"Speaking of which, you finished up those reports from last night?"
Hiccup chuckled. "Yup. I'm back on track." His cousin smirked, raising an eyebrow. "Despite being 'busy'?"
"Shut up."
He laughed. "Come on, nobody ever tells me anything anymore."
"Good," Hiccup shot back indignantly but grinned. "I'm not really keen on all of Berk knowing about it."
"So what's 'it'?"
"Honestly? You think I'm that unattentive?"
"When you're drawing, yeah."
Something about the smirk that was plastered on his cousin's lips seemed fishy to Hiccup. He did not like this grin.
"Scott," he drawled. "What did you do?"
His cousin's grin widened. "Oh, I did nothing. I just *sat* there. Listen, all I'm sayin' is, that maybe you should pay more attention to who else is in the room in the evening."
Hiccup blushed immediately as he remembered being in the common room in the evening, reading until he had absentmindedly started sketching - a pair of eyes, grey on paper but blue in memory, lips, just slightly parted, outlines of a face - "Oh, God," he spluttered. "I - it wasn't - I mean."
Snotlout laughed and nudged his cousin's shoulder. "Hey, I'm not judging."
He offered Hiccup an amicable smile and grinned when his cousin slumped his shoulders and returned the smile.
Who'd have thought? Seven years ago he'd have never even dreamed of sharing the same job with Hiccup and spending most of their shifts together, let alone having normal, amiable conversations and sharing jokes.
Gobber's voice from outside interrupted the dark-haired man's thoughts.
"Come on, Hiccup, we're gonna be late!" Gobber suddenly shouted from the hall, making Snotlout laugh and offer Hiccup a fistbump.
"Alright, I'm coming, just - stay where you are!" Hiccup shouted back rolled his eyes at his cousin, who only grinned and shrugged.
"Alright, I think we're done here, everyone. Dismissed," Stoick Haddock concluded and closed his folder, nodding at the men seated around him.
Hiccup sighed inwardly. The monthly check-in was something that had to be done, he knew that, but these meetings could be both lengthy and boring.
He'd tried to excuse his attire and had only got a few amused looks and some raised eyebrows; 'Could've been worse,' Hiccup thought and got up. At the sight of his father gathering up his files he remembered his post-meeting-agenda and quickly tapped his father's shoulder, lowly asking, "Dad, can I … talk to you for a sec?"
"Of course," Stoick nodded at the other men and led his son off to the side. "Excuse us."
His eyes met Hiccup's expression. The young man leaned in and murmured, "Hey, Dad, listen, um. I need you to do me a favour, please."
His father raised his eyebrows but Hiccup didn't fail to notice the faint smile playing on his lips. He sighed and inhaled deeply, shortly raking a hand through his hair.
"Oh man, I can't believe I'm actually saying this - Dad, I need a shirt."
"You need a … a what?"
His father looked at him, speechless. Hiccup nodded sharply and elaborated, "Yes, a shirt. Any colour, I just need - listen, Dad, Astrid is coming over tomorrow and I've run out of shirts, and I can't just wear the same over and over again, so - please. I just need a shirt or two, button up or down, you decide, I'm desperate."
To his suprise and utter mortification, his father let out a whoop of laughter, starting him and the other men in the room.
"She's really got you bedazzled, aye, son?"
"I - what?"
"I thought I'd never see the day you'd ask me to help you with your shopping!" his father bellowed, still laughing. "Oh, this is great, son, I've been waiting for this my whole life-"
"Dad, don't you think you're … overreacting, a bit-"
"-and I will not waste this opportunity. Consider your wardrobe situation saved."
With this he strode past him, muttering something about "my boy's finally getting his life together" and "wrapped around his finger, completely head over heels", leaving an abashed Hiccup and chuckling collegues behind.
"Well, you did it," Gobber laughed and patted his back, making Hiccup stumble forward involuntarily. "he will not rest until he's got you a month's worth of clothing."
Hiccup groaned. "What have I done, Gobber?"
"Made him the most excited I've seen him in years, you did," Gobber smiled, his expression gentle now. "Come on, let's get back to the department, lover-boy."
"Please don't call me that."
"Romeo?"
"Tragic death and stupid as fuck."
"That a yes?"
"No."
It hit Hiccup like a bolt of lightning. He'd forgotten to fill up Toothless' bowl when he'd left the house this afternoon.
"Shit. Shitshitshitshit," he spat through gritted teeth as he frantically searched for options. He couldn't leave the department now, he was the only one in.
Okay. What else? Call someone. It was at times like these Hiccup wished his entire support system wasn't built on people working in the administrative departments.
And Fishlegs was out of the city.
Then it dawned on him. The only person he could hope to be home.
His hands had already picked up his phone and clicked on the number.
"Hiccup?"
He exhaled. "Oh, thank God. Astrid, do you - do you have time? Are you at home?"
Her answer was hard to make out over the background-voices and music.
"I'm on my shift, why?"
His heart sunk.
"Okay, nevermind then-"
"Hiccup? Hello - hang on, I'll go outside, just give me one sec."
The noise faded.
Her voice got clearer as she grumbled, "You'd think people'd wait for a Friday 'til they hit the bar."
He chuckled. "I'd honestly love to be somewhere else right now, so I can't blame them."
Astrid snorted and finally there was nothing blocking out her voice anymore. "Trust me, you don't wanna be here. Anyways, what's up? Something wrong? You never call this late."
"Oh - yeah, I actually … Astrid, can you do me a favour?"
She didn't even hesitate and her answer let a wave of warmth and affection wash over him.
"What do you need and where should I be?"
"At my apartment. Or rather, first here and then my apartment."
Astrid furrowed her brow, for a second asking herself if this was some kind of disguise for something else but quickly discarded that thought as Hiccup continued quickly, "I forgot to feed Toothless when I left today and I locked everything, so he can't go out to hunt. Could you pick up my keys and feed him, please?"
She hummed. "Yeah, of course."
Hiccup sighed and smiled. "Thanks, I really owe you one."
Astrid laughed breezily and was apparently making her way back inside. From what he could hear, Pink's 'Raise your glass' was playing and people were screaming.
"No problem," he heard her say over them. "I'll think of something."
He chuckled and leaned on his desk.
"You have until tomorrow."
"Oh, so now there's a deadline for favours?"
"Only for that one."
She laughed again. "Well, maybe it's a project that can't be done overnight."
"Am I still talking to Astrid or Ms Hofferson who just pulled the ultimate teacher-joke on me?"
"Both. Hang on a second."
The sound was muffled since she seemed to be pressing the microphone against herself to block out the sound, but he still heard her distinct voice shout, "Heath, can you tell Al I'm taking my break? Be back in 45."
Another voice answered, loud but friendly, "Sure, don't worry. Gotcha, Stellar!"
Stellar?
The sound was back in its full intensity and so was her voice.
"Alright, I'm heading out. Be there in ten."
"Okay. See you."
Astrid smiled up at the sky. "You know, this isn't even a favour I'm doing you. You're doing me one."
Although she had called it multiple times, Astrid had never been inside the fire department of Berk before.
It looked a bit intimidating in the dark, and she only saw one big window with lights on inside. She squinted her eyes up and into the darkness and registered movement.
A slim figure approached the window, waving at her, chasing a smile across her lips as she waved back. Hiccup's sillhouette disappeared.
Astrid herself made her way into the building and up the staircase to the second floor, where she was greeted by a dark hallway.
A door was pried open, a small ray of light emitting from the crack.
"Astrid?" His face was stuck out of the open door.
"Hiccup? Why's it so dark in here?"
"We're saving up energy."
He was leaning out of the door, supporting his weight by the frame.
Astrid smirked and came to a halt in front of him. He didn't move, just stayed with his eyes fixed on her.
The young woman felt a weird sensation rushing through her stomach as she remembered her dream from a couple of nights ago, which had started just like this, opening a door and -
"You wanna come in for a sec?" he asked and interrupted her thoughts.
Astrid nodded, smiling. "Let's make the workplace situation even."
He laughed and led her inside. The building itself wasn't that big, but the headquarters seemed pretty spacious. There were only three desks inside with multiple screens, and by the wall stood an unsafe-looking plank bed.
"Welcome to my job where we get Sicca Syndrome and a bad back trying to sleep on these," he joked and ran a hand through his hair.
Astrid sat down on the plank bed, wincing as it squeaked and bent violently, making him laugh as he sat down next to her.
Without giving herself much time to hesitate, Astrid leaned against him and rested her head on his shoulder.
"Do we have enough time for me to ask you what your day looks like?"
He chuckled and gently wrapped his arm around her, trying not to let on that he was shaking slightly, thankful she still had her eyes closed so she wasn't able to see his blush.
"Maybe. We could save that conversation up for tomorrow, though."
She opened her eyes and moved to get up, but Hiccup tightened his grip around her shoulders and grinned lopsidedly.
"That wasn't me trying to tell you to immediately get up. It's …" he hesitated, his blush deepening. "It's, um, really nice sitting like this. With you."
Astrid chuckled lightly and leaned back into him, nuzzling her head into the crook of his neck.
"You're really trying to outdo yourself today, huh?"
Her voice was muffled against his skin, her breath sending sparks down it.
"Is it working?"
Astrid grinned against him. "Yeah."
The young man laughed and tried to calm his heart yet again. To think that only sitting with her head on his shoulder, her lips making direct contact with his skin when she spoke was enough to turn him into a flustered mess. And they hadn't even KISSED yet.
"I'm beginning to regret this."
He froze, his heart dropping immediately. Regret what? This? Her decision from earlier? Being alone with him? Out of a sudden? Somehow?
Of course, his logical side knew better than that and patiently waited for Astrid to continue - his worry got the better of him.
"Why?"
"Because now going back to my shift is going to be really fucking hard."
'Oh. Oh, thank God.' He exhaled and relaxed again.
"Why?" he repeated, feeling stupid.
Astrid closed her eyes again. "Because I'd much rather be here and spend the night with you than going back."
Aaaand there it was. His pulse was sky-rocketing. And she was so close she might actually hear. His blush had deepened even more.
Astrid continued after a pause, "Or you know, I could just crash at your apartment and cuddle with Toothless."
He rasped out a laugh. "If you let me in tomorrow."
Astrid opened her eyes and pursed her lips to hide her smile.
"We'll see."
Hiccup really wanted to kiss her. He wanted to so bad it almost hurt.
Yet, there was something holding him back - the question from earlier. But he didn't want to bring this up now. Especially not since-
"Speaking of Toothless, I should probably get going now."
"Oh, y-yeah! Uh," he uncurled his arm from around her and jumped up, stumbling towards his desk. "Let me just … find the key … uh. Should've probably done that earlier."
"Let me help. I've got a knack for finding things."
She joined him at the desk and grinned when he shot her a short, amused glance.
"You do?"
"Oh, yeah. I found you, so that's one."
Hiccup chuckled and watched her pull out his keys from underneath the printed draft of the day's report and hold it up in front of him, grinning smugly.
"And you say I'm trying to outdo myself?" he muttered, making her laugh.
"Well, now we're even."
He shrugged and grinned. "True. You remember the direction?"
Astrid nodded, leaning against the desk.
"Good. Ah, and uh, mind the door, it always gets stuck, so it's a bit hard to open. Just, uh, throw your entire body weight againt it. At least that's what I do."
She nodded again and smiled up at him. "Jot that down. Anything else? Where's the food?"
"Second left cupboard by the window on the floor. You know, the one with the scratches?"
She snorted as she remembered which one Hiccup was talking about - and it seemed like he was either very forgetful or had a cat that loved to eat.
"Alright, got it."
"Thanks again, Astrid."
Somehow they had ended up facing each other, his hands on her arms.
Hiccup's gaze fell down on his hands and his first instinct was to let go, but Astrid smiled and put her own hands on his arms, squeezing lightly.
"You're welcome. But - by the way, where's everyone else?"
"Oh, Gobber's already home and Scott went for a quick nap down in the living area. He complained that my typing was too loud for him to sleep."
She snorted. "Well, at least you've got the place to yourself, right?"
His hands subconscuiously had wandered to her waist.
"I'd rather not. But I'm a bit picky about the company."
"That so?"
He hummed, his eyes dropping to her lips ever so shortly. He looked like he was almost going to lean down and kiss her - but there was something in his eyes Astrid knew well by now.
Hesitation. Something was holding him back.
Astrid smiled and pulled back slightly.
She'd give him time.
Until then … she stood on her tip toes and kissed his cheek.
"I'm gonna get going now. Don't wanna keep Toothless waiting."
She grinned up at him and was relieved when he returned it.
"Yeah."
She turned to leave but was held back by his voice softly calling out her name.
"Oh, and … Astrid?"
She hummed, turning around, already halways out the door.
With a few steps he had closed the distance between them. His eyes were warm as he gently wrapped his fingers around her left wrist, tugged her closer and pressed a lingering kiss on her forehead.
Astrid's eyes fluttered closed at the contact.
"Stay safe tonight," he whispered, his lips barely grazing her skin before he pulled back.
Astrid opened her eyes again and was met with his open expression and small smile.
She returned it tenfolds and whispered back, "You too."
Then she turned around and took the stairs downstairs.
Fires and people had a lot in common, but most people could be either reasoned with or at least punched (which was her own interpretation). Then again, her boyfriend was not the type to underestimate a thing like a fire.
Astrid stopped, her hand on the doorhandle. Boyfriend. She'd thought 'boyfriend'.
The air was a tinge colder when she stepped outside, but still had the distinct warmth of a summer night.
Well, he was, wasn't he? It was what he'd asked her this morning, wasn't it?
Astrid smiled to herself and maybe the sky, Hiccup's keys clinking in her pocket.
This was a very girlfriend-thing to do, after all.
