Revisiting S5 E14 Derision, and Making it Work
It's *easy* to dunk on Derision. I won't rehash all the holes here. What is harder is actually doing better... or so you would think.
What follows is a back-of-the-napkin idea I threw together in about 5 minutes. So I hope it doesn't meet with universal... derision. 🐈‍⬛
Reworking this episode reaches back earlier into S5 and recasts one of the side/new characters... but bear with me it's to good purpose. When you're creating a pivotal pre-canon character moment 5 seasons in, there's going to be a little collateral.
It begins with... Socqueline.
Socqueline was NOT Marinette's savior at FDP. In truth... she was Marinette's bully. She was everyone's bully in fact. She ruled FDP with an iron fist. Teachers were afraid of her, and no not her dad, her. Socqueline is the one who terrorized Marinette and pulled the awful prank. The prank that was bad enough that she was expelled. Marinette meets her unexpectedly at the craft store, and is instantly a yr younger and in shock.
HOWEVER
Socqueline is still the one pretending to be Ladybug. She's still the one trying to help people. She's still kind and helpful and Marinette is so very confused! You see, being expelled, having to be in an entirely new environment, and even just a year of change and reflection has made Socqueline a different person. She has grown and is trying to do good to make up for being bad before. Why is she done up like Marinette? She's not! She's done up like Ladybug. She's emulating her hero and inspiration. (who is of course, Marinette).
This already gives us some really good changes.
1)We have a valid reason for Marinette to not have seen/wanted to see Socqueline until S5. you don't go seeking out your former bully.
2)We have a cover for why Marinette hasn't reacted to stimulus before now. She was 'doing good' until she crossed paths with Socqueline and after that. *bam* right in the Trauma. It doesn't matter that Socqueline has changed, trauma is trauma. Marinette hasn't processed it yet, so it gets stoked.
3)Have Kim think Socqueline's pranks were funny. He's Kim, he's thick as two boards, at least he's not gushing about how hot another girl is right next to poor Ondine. It leans into Dark Humor just fine on it's own. Skip the Adrien/Chloe scene for a Marinette/Socqueline scene where Marinette brings up the event to Socqueline and how much it impacted her. have Socquline apologize(she did back in Jubilation for everything, but have her also for this specific thing) have it end on a hug, how nice.
Already we're doing much better! But wait, there's more!
We cut Chloé out of Derision! What does this mean? If she wasn't Marinette's bully doesn't this mess everything up?
No, not really.
Chloé wasn't Marinette's bully pre-canon in any meaningful way. She didn't rule the roost. She only stepped up once Socqueline was expelled, trying to fill the power vacuum/rule the roost/be the new Queen. She's just really bad at it. This explains why the class and even Marinette react to Chloé even in S1 with a sort of exasperated resignation and Marinette isn't even remotely afraid to snap back at her. It's not 'Oh no she is such a bully' it's 'oh God, Chloé's on her shit again.' She's still a brat, mean, and entitled. We're not rewriting any of that. She'll even be an antagonist in S5, but we're going to lean more heavily into Lila/Gabe/Tomoé actively manipulating her, much like in S3. She's not evil, but she's very easily persuaded to be bad.
you see- What we've done with Socquline is foreshadowing. We've shown someone who WAS a bully, who changed when their environment changed and they found the right motivation/inspiration. So when Chloé is going down in flames in S5 we're going to build organically on the parental abuse into the manipulation by villains. We seek to inspire frustration with her, revulsion with those manipulating her, agony that the manipulation all goes unseen, and of course sympathy for everyone who has to deal with it. However, we've also set up the seeds for a future where her environment changes, where a new motivation/inspiration comes in, and where we get convert her from brat to ... okay maybe not GOOD person but at least a decent little porcupine. 🤣
We've even given Marinette a firsthand experience that change CAN happen. Which is something she didn't have the first time around with Chloé during S2/3.
So, what do y'all think?

We need to talk about Echo (and by talk I mean screm). S3 E13 + 14 Spoilers!
Tumblr media
FRIENDS, I'M GOING TO EXPLODE. I need to talk about Echo for a minute. We need to talk about Echo for a minute,  because he has spent the last two episodes in the absolute thralls of complete and total danger, and I personally don't feel like there's been enough of a celebratory uproar for me to be satisfied with the level of appreciation and love that man deserves. (Remember when Hunter ran face first into a colossal exhaust pipe and we all collectively lost our minds because it was so impressive and so sexy? Remember when Tech drove a speeder really fast through a tunnel and we all fainted? I'M A TECH GIRLY. IT WAS ME! I FAINTED!!) but, Y'ALL, Echo deserves that right now!! And for all eternity!!! Because he is wholly submurged in the harrowing potential of torture and execution, and he didn't even bat an eye to put himself there. My awe of him is all-consuming, so please forgive me if this rant reads as nothing but incoherent screaming.
Echo haters (first of all, we can't be friends....) come on this journey with me! Let's back pedal to the beginning of the last episode (13). He stole an imperial shuttle. Let me repeat, he stole an imperial shuttle. And not just an attack shuttle. Not just a lil one-pilot transport. Bro somehow stole a Rho-class medical transport, which is very large, obscenely conspicuous, and very easily tracked. And, to use his own words, it was "the best he could do on short notice." The man stole a shuttle on short notice. ON SHORT NOTICE? HELLO, HOW DID HE DO THAT. WHY AIN'T WE LOSING OUR COOL ABOUT IT.
Next stop on this I-love-Echo journey through my mind: not only did he provide his brothers transportation in the complete void of their own (RIP havoc bb), but he also came equipped with intel and clearance codes, and, as Rampart stated, those things change DAILY. Echo somehow procured top secret imperial clearance codes, and a fkn SHIP, within hours of the Batch requesting his help. Not to mention, the ship had yet to be reported missing (which means it was only-freshly commandeered), and the clearance codes worked. Of course they did. Echo never fails. Never doubt Echo. "Echo's on it."
Choochoo, next stop! Once they arrived on that station orbiting Coruscant, and made their way to the control room (lookin sexy as heck in his armour-au-noir), he broke imperial encryption, hacked into the Imperial database, almost instantly found them the location of a ship departing for the prison that holds their daughter Tantiss, AND THEN DIDN'T EVEN HESITATE TO CLIMB ABOARD AND STOW AWAY.
He didn't even remotely have a plan, or have time to make a plan. He didn't know who or what else would be on board that mysterious vessel. He didn't know where it was going other than the name of the fkn mountain (which has proven to be nothing but unhelpful thus far). He just ARC-troopered his way through that crowded hangar, dodging aggressive astromech's and inconsiderate loader droids, shirking from the perspective eyes of highly trained commandos, and snuck his way onto a heavily guarded, extremely unknown science vessel. Then, of course, he wasted no time, hacking into the ships control system (may I gently remind- there were at least three pilots and an officer prepping the ship for jump and closely watching all aspects of its controls), disabling the proximity sensors without being detected, and then seamlessly covered the troopers absence by pretending to be him (which we all know is what should have happened on Serenno but... hindsight is 20/20.)
So... SO.... now we're at Episode 14. Here we at fkn terrified station because HULLO ECHO IS ALONE ON A SCIENCE DIVISION TRANSPORT; we have literally seen them carry around Zilo beasts in that shit. What the heck else could be on there that they don't know about? Literally anything. Because THEY KNEW NOTHING before attaching themselves to it. Echo knew NOTHING before sneaking onto that thing and creepin' around. Thank heck he didnt come across a fkn fresh wave of slither vines ok?
NEXT, Echo shoots (not stuns- lol) a sassy fkn droid (they had it coming, not sorry), then another trooper. AND THEN discovered his only option for departing the ship once it enters atmosphere is going completely undercover, because (in true "we improvise everything" CF99 fashion that gives me heart burn just thinking about it), they had zero fkn plan to get off the ship. I will repeat: completely undercover. On Tantiss. COMPLETELY UNDERCOVER ON TANTISS. NO COMMS, NO BACK UP, NO RECON, NO PLAN, BARELY ANY GEAR, and I would just like to stress... no neuro brace. He left his neurobrace on that ship. Left it. LEFT IT AND TOOK A HAND INSTEAD. PLEASE FKN SEDATE ME.
We can't leave this station yet... This I-love-Echo train needs to linger at this point for a sec because I think it's lost on some people how wild this is. Echo without his neurobrace is huge. It's a bigger deal than Echo without his armour. Armour is, in the grand scheme of things, inconsequential (one can find more- see Howzer). Echo's neurobrace is not armour, it's a computer and it's so so so crucial to how his mind processes information and events. Don't forget, the Technounion HIJACKED HIS BRAIN. They took every memory from him and manipulated it for their gain. Pruned it, tweaked it, blanched it, poached it, turned it into scrambled eggs, and then fkn ate it up and used it to defeat their enemies (Echo's family- I'm sobbing). They implanted him with an unfathomable amount of information; they changed the way the neurons in his brain fire in relation to stimuli. That neurobrace is so so critical for him. Now, we know he can operate well enough without it, we saw it in the last episode of the TBB arc in season 7 of Clone Wars, but... please.... to what extent? We don't know what an extended time without that neurobrace looks like for him... especially when all other aspects compliing his surroundings foreign, unknown, and dangerous, and that scares me.
AND NOW HE'S ABOUT TO RUN AMOK IN TANTISS with Emerie who, (I'm sorry) is wishy-washy as heck (who are you loyal to!!!!! What is your history!!! Are you trustworthy and what are you looking to gain!!!), trying to adopt a collection of Jedi children whove spent maker-knows how long playing space tetris, WHILST ALSO ATTEMPTING TO LOCATE AND ESCAPE WITH HIS BROTHERS UNDER THE EYE OF THE GALAXY'S SECOND MOST DANGEROUS MAN.
So yes, short of d-d-d-di... can't say it... short of THE WORST CASE, Echo has made the ultimate sacrifice to save not only Omega who is literally the only person we've seen able to make him truly laugh, but all the clone brothers that he's been desperately trying to locate and rescue. His bravery and determination are literally unrivalled, and he did it while feasting on nothing but humble pie because that man wouldn't know arrogance if it danced naked under his perfect nose.
Okay so welcome, we've finally pulled into I-Love-Echo station. Before departing the ride, please stand and do a hip hip hurray for the miracle that is Echo, including but not limited to, everything he's done, is doing, and is willing to do for other people.

I wonder how religious each of the characters' upbringings was. Did baby Chase learn to ballroom dance and go to Cotillions (very Catholic!)? Did Cameron go to church every Sunday? Was Foreman an altar boy?
i think foreman’s religious upbringing is pretty explicit: it comes up pretty heavily in Euphoria and later in S3. foreman grew up in church with religious parents, his father prays for him and asks him if he still believes, and we see that in times of great stress (like Euphoria, like Resignation) foreman retreats back to his old ways. he prays, though he doesn’t believe in god. he sits in the chapel.
we see his religious leanings in some other ways too, actually. he and cameron periodically have religious debates (damned if you do, house vs god), and foreman always comes down on the side of “god exists,” if subtly. cameron thinks it’s silly to speculate about; foreman thinks it’s the most important question there is. cameron thinks that if there is a god, it’s far off and uninterested; foreman isn’t sure what god would be interested in besides “the petty workings of you and me.” he was 100%, no question, absolutely raised in a religious and church-going home.
cameron is a loud and stubborn atheist, but i wouldn’t be surprised if she went to some sunday school classes as a kid, either. for all her insistence that she doesn’t believe and belief is silly, she betrays some pretty specific views of god and worship — that it’s a way to be thankful, that god is loving and it’s about practicing gratefulness — that … comes a little bit out of nowhere otherwise, you know? she doesn’t believe god exists, but if it does, then it’s a nice god you thank in your prayers. i don’t think her family was probably as religious as foreman’s (who hesitates to tell his father he no longer believes), but i think she could easily have come from a christmas and easter family.
as for chase… we know he went to catholic school growing up, which of course comes with its own layer of Church Stuff. but he’s surprisingly ambivalent about this at times: despite going to seminary later, he admits he never believed and was looking more for somewhere to fit in; on the one hand he is deeply religious in a lot of his issues and the way he can quote bible versus from memory; on the other we never see him, as foreman does, fall back to religion when he’s under great stress. he wanted to believe, badly, and sincerely. but he didn't, and that shows. he comes off more as a… theology major than a religious figure, you know? he wanted to believe, but it never really happened that way. he still knows and cares an awful lot about all this, but he doesn’t back it up with faith. i wouldn’t be surprised if his family wasn’t actually all that religious, if he’s the weird one: he’s trying too hard, you know?

LONG POST AHEAD HOLY SHIT I DIDNT REALISE HOW MUCH TIME I SPENT ON THIS THIS WAS JUST SUPPOSED TO BE ME NOTING DOWN A FUN ELEMENTS NOT A WHOLE OUTLINE
Thinking about a Chloe and Felix swap places au that I mentioned in a previous post (not that I plan to write one but yknow just thinking about it)
(Pardon me if things seem OOC but this is me contemplating an AU anyways... also its been a while since i watched old MLB and Felix episodes often gave me headaches)
-Silent yet VERY snarky Felix has been going to school with Marinette for a year now, moving from London to be closer with his family due to the passing of his father. Thus marks the end to Marinette's (and frankly everyones) happy fun times at school.
-Rather than antagonising out of nowhere Felix (usually) waits for an opportunity to present itself BEFORE acting like a cocky prick. Often calling her out or bullying Marinette when she (or anyone) pisses him off (like whenever she's too happy, whenever she says or does something or when he sees her with the thing he wants: a loving stable family)
-He constantly dismisses anything she does, calls her out if she so much as expresses any emotion, looks down upon her (yet envies her), hurling classist or misogynistic insults towards Marinette, and has harrassed her many times but always returns to class scott free.
-Whenever everyone is having a fun event at school Felix will usually say something to bring everyone's mood down or refuses to appear despite his classmates asking him to come
-Despite this everyone defends Felix knowing his background
-His one friend is a student from another school: Kagami, who sticks to him like glue whenever the two aren't in school, Kagami being the ONE person Marinette has seen Felix acting sweet towards (basically Kagami takes the role Sabrina in this scenario but unlike post s3 Sabrina she doesnt do a 180 and turn on him because "he was actually mean to her the whole time")
-One time Marinette had the chance to speak with Kagami, when asked why she sticks around some so hostile like Felix she was met with the whole "we're very similar" esque thing
-All this to say Marinette is NOT a fan of Felix. She dOES understand the hurt he's going through but it doesn't change the harrasment he faces from her
-So when Adrien finally appears Marinette is NOT excited to say the least. Especially because now Felix has become all the more hostile, especially when others approach Adiren
-And while felix may put up a farce from time to time around Adrien to seem "nicer" Adiren is still aware of his true nature... but of course since the two are family, have similar expirences and since Felix was there for him when his mom "dissapeared" Adrien sticks his neck out to defend him even with his awful behaviour (especially because at the end of the day men will go out to defend other men because "deep down he's a really nice guy")
-Thus asuming the worst Marinette keeps her distance from Adiren, only to be surprised at his true nature and developing feelings towards
-Felix obliviously picks up on the fact that she has a crush on his cousin and intensifies his hostility and aggression towards her. Even having disguised himself as Adrien in an attempt to assault her to get her to back off (naturally he was caught, by Adrien and claimed to want to show her their "fun switcheroo game")
-(Also while I dont want to think of Marinette stalking Adrien I would like to think of Marinette looking out at him in public or school and stuff and Felix randomly appearing out of nowhere and calling her a stalker)
-Now, obviously this isn't someone Ladybug would trust with a Miraculous, but say something were to happen, and Felix just so happens to stumble upon the Bee Miraculous
-Now say Felix is well aware of the Peacock Miraculous, desperate to get his hands on it, but yet isnt capable of getting his hands on it (Gabriel took extra precautions to hide any trace of it or Emilie once he found out his cunning nephew would be moving in) and thus needs to find a way to acess it.
-He could just tell Ladybug his uncle is Hawkmoth but does he have the proof? And what would happen to Adrien or Kagami in the aftermath???
-Wanting a way to get closer to Ladybug he dons the bee Miraculous in attempt to get closer to ladybug, the Miraculous and his uncle
-(Now wether he acts as Felix or claims to be Adrien Im not too sure. I like to assume he pretends to be Adrien at first only to get caught and then naturally puts up the whole "I promise to be better" thing. Though I like to think Marinette did geuinley believe him (though wether he stays redeemed or goes down the whole "damnation" arc is hard to say...))
-Speaking of the bee Miraculous...
-After a couple months Marinette gains a new classmate: Chloe Bourgeoise, coming to Paris after no longer being able to handle her mother's abuse. (Though her neglectful yet enabling father isn't much better)
-Though she was not there all the time (only coming to paris when visiting her dad(which was often marked by a big celebration by the mayor)), Chloe is a childhood friend of Adrien. Having never actually spoken to her, Marinette had postive expectations, (especially since Felix seemed disgruntled by the news of her transfer)
-That is untill she heard Chloe speak for the first time
-(And while I'm not crazy about Zoe, I do like to think she does exist in this au (though in the clsss a grade below with Mark who im POSTIVE she would be friends with alongside Nath cuz artist check). Especially since the two together sort of symbolise the counterpart to Adiren and Felix. But like instead of Adrien defending Felix's misogynistic behaviour, Zoe calls out her sister's classist attitude while the two girls still support each other AS. SISTERS. WITH. ABUSIVE. PARENTS. SHOULD. DO)
-Haughty, bitchy, and very classist, Chloe's first day involved her showering her classmates with EXPENSIVE and lavish gifts to win them over (something she learned from her father) but when things dont go her way she does tend to lash out and express her frustration in an almost childish way (something she learned from her mother)
-Not a fan, Marinette kept her distance, which only further frustrates Chloe, wanting DESPERATELY to "win" everyone over
-But despite her attempts there is still resentment from her peers. And even when they express their praise towards her Chloe still isn't able to truly connect with anyone in class aside from Adrien (whom she also is desperate for validation from him) and another girl, Sabrina (a girl who's become her true confidant)
-With her dad acting as "protection" towards the mayor Sabrina has hung out with Bourgeoises everytime they came to Paris. Captivated by her nature Chloe showed her not only how fun the "high life" is or how fun it is to be ontop of everyone can be, Sabrina also learned how thrilling sneaking around and breaking the rules (something Sabrina's father detests (despite him working with the mayor)) can absolutely be (a contrast that Sabrina noticed to her younger sister who was just as much of a delight to be around)
-She also learned how terryfing Audrey and Andre can be, often comforting the young girl(s) whenever her parents would fight before leaving Paris.
-All this to say Sabrina is still a major Chloe fan but like more reminiscent of their s1 friendship and not just the stereotypical lackey. She may act more measly than Chloe but Marinette noticed how more "high and mighty" her classmate acted once Chloe transferred. Often joining in when Chloe lashed out at others or comforting her in darker moments (something Marinette soon discovered)
-Eventually slowly but surely Marinette comes to understand Chloe's agression and desire for attention and praise, something made exponentially clear at a parent's day event, where Andre had to leave very shortly after arriving (despite paying for a grand school wide festival) and after a very brief zoom call with Chloe's mother who couldn't be bothered to show up
-Marinette finally takes a moment to comfort Chloe, to understand her and while she still has some reservations towards her she does finally understand and want to help Chloe at learning to actually socalise with other people
-So while she still may act high and mighty she helps Chloe at becoming a better person, learning to be kinder and striving to be better, like her idol ladybug (which was another reason Chloe chose to move to paris). In short, Marinette uplifts and helps Chloe move forward (even when she may take a step back) because GIRLS. SHOULD. SUPPORT. GIRLS. AND. MAGICAL. GIRLS. /. SUPERHEROES. DONT. TEAR. OTHER. GIRLS. DOWN.
-This eventually culminates to Ladybug allowing Chloe to use the Bee Miraculous, something she previously allowed Felix to weild (now wether she does so only from time to time when Felix isnt capable or permanently because Felix damnation arc is something idk of)
-Taking up the role of Queen Bee, Chloe can sometimes be difficult to work with in Akuma attacks but she'll always try her best and fight her hardest (even if she's a little misguided on what a hero does, but that's easily solved with a heart to heart). Queen Bee often works best alongside Ladybug (of course), Cat Noire, and Miss Hound, of course but she's also worked well Viperion a few times.
-(And if Chloe isn't capable of fighting at the moment she's already informed Ladybug to entrust her sister with the bee miraculous as "she is certainly not as pretty and capable as me but she is incredibly smart and skilled and it would be utterly ridiculous of you to not trust her!" Veesperia tends to get along with everyone pretty well, working espically well with Miss Hound, Rooster Bold, Caprikid, and the one time she had to take the mantle of kitty Noire, she got along really well with Queen Bee)
-(And if this au keeps the whole aspect of everyone knowing Chloe's identity i like to think that Chloe uses the Queen Bee role in like the daytime/in the public light, while Zoe uses the role of Veesperia in the shadows. And maybe Marinette isn't sure of this at first but then realises this can actually be super helpful as Chloe can use her image, wealth, and persona outloud for the better (espcially when the mayor does something that isnt right, learning to stand up to him and her mom, Chloe is more than happy to break their rules because theyre uttlerly ridiculous)
-Maybe I do like to think Felix in this au does manage to grow as a person still, and while Marinette can't truly forgive him for everything she's seen first hand what someone who manages to change can do, and maybe after managing to recover a very fixed Peacock Miraculous ladybug allows argos to enter her good graces.
Jesus chirst this was a long post I think I just spent an hour brain dumping but yeah. Basically I just want an AU that instead of paving Chloe in a misogynistic and irreedmable light with girls putting each other down over a boy like asstruck does, we get miraculous that uplifts and helps children from abusive situations, that doesn't forgive them for their actions but helps them grow as people. A miraculous au that explores how men will go out of their way to protect one another even with their worst traits and how women should uplift and support each other because despite how they may behave at the end of the day they're ALL victims and resenting one another gets them nowhere in life.
I JUST WANT AN AU WHERE FELIX IS THE LITTLE SHIT HE IS AND THAT CHLOE GETS TO BE HAPPY
I know i went WAY too in depth but like still jesus

With the news of cancellation of Good Omens S3 into a 90 minute finale I sort of find myslef reminicing about where does the border between seperating art from the artist lie.
As a preface I'm gonna say I don't have any particular attachment to Gaiman's body of work as a whole. Western comics were never really popular where I'm from outside of extremely niche circles that graduated into standard niche circles only recently, with Gaiman's visual and literary works included. So this opinion does not stem from any particular nostalgic place. As far as I'm aware the situation is currently still under investigation, but there is concrete proof that Gaimain is, by the traditional definition, no longer considered a "good person" or at least not aligning with his previous public persona. I'm not really an authority to speak on the topics involved in the scandal and I'm really here just to ramble on my own personal blog about art and artist relationship, I'll leave the rest to people who know what they are talking about. Good? Good.
I know it's easy for to denounce, degrade or disprove work made by people we find out were some sort of morally corrupt or did awful stuff in their life. This usually stems from the fact it's hard to believe someboy who's in empathetic and introspective enough to write about topics that resonate with many people so well would still choose to hurt vulnerable people around them or to generally engage in activities that mean to do harm to others.
If we take JK Rowling for example, as heartbreaking as it must have been for most fans of her works to find out about her hate campaigns and such, if we look objectively at the body of work in question it was already brought many times it was a bit problematic. Class issues, race issues, character development and morality weren't really well handeled topics in her books and the whole pedestal was really based more on the whimsy of it or mythos that people enjoyed getting immersed into. Even that was put into question with many plagarism allegations, as such, while flabbergasting from a fan's perspective, from outsider's perspective it wasn't really that thought provoking. "Bad person's books turn out to be pretty bad after all" type of situation that's pretty common among people, especially with writing that's generally consider to be "cool", but ultimetly hollow when it comes to emotional stakes.
Another thing is actors that did bad or immoral things. Generally unless an actor doubles as a writer for stuff they star in, it's not hard to imagine that they are actually wicked people behind the curtain. It was a "funny movie trivia" for years that some actors who played the sweetest most innocent characters on screen were awful when the cameras stopped rolling so it's not that hard to detach yourself from their work. Especially when you consider that it's technically not their work to begin with, just because Bratt Pitt plays an important character in Fight Club, does not mean the whole movie should be shunned, because that's just punishing other actors, director, screenwriters even the OG book's author for sins of one person who's personal life was irrelevant to the work in question.
Gaiman is a special case to me, because despite his actions, his work has been universally regarded as very emotional, empathetic and generally very introspective. I was not an avid fan but I did see merit in his work and ideas he helped create. To write stuff like that you need to be in some way selfaware of your own morality and emotions while also being an empathetic enough to be able to imagine how your characters feel. He touched upon a lot of topics, including stuff he's accused of, while also getting praised on how he handled them.
We want to seperate art from the artist and claim it's impossible only when that art relates directly to the artist's immoral deeds (like in Jeepers Creepers), but to me it's just that we don't want to consider the fact that somebody can be so introspective and emapthetic and STILL use their position to hurt people. To write about the emotional damage caused by cruelty and malice of others and then do the same is incomprensible to us and it either speaks really badly about the person or about our understanding of what it means for somebody to be a "bad person".

OH!
I thought this was post S3 for some reason hahaha, that explains a lot, low key super curious how Chloe got brought into/back into the fold. But yeah the rest makes sense. Admittedly surprised Zoe isn't on Marinette's side, but I guess that depends on how awful Andre turns out to be perhaps?
Oh yeah it's post-Season 5! The main catalyst of this being Ladybug's decision to lie to Adrien, but a lot of her other bad decisions come out too.
The Bee Sisters thing I'm imagining is like.
Zoé hasn't yet given up on Chloé because she Knows what's going on in her head re: Audrey's abuse and is seeing that Andre is useless at helping too, but surely if someone just reached out like the class did for her.....
So while Chloé is still in the city, she's trying to reach out. And also Pollen is concerned for her too.
And everything just kinda spills out. From what /really/ happened during Miracle Queen re: feeling betrayed and abandoned while Hawkmoth was threatening her and her parents, to Marinette's advice on Audrey of 'just be the person she wants so she'll love you!!'.
This is another reason that's exacerbating the whole 'making up' thing. Mari's black/white mentality makes it hard for her to admit she made a mistake with Chloé. But also any time she tryes to say 'but Chloé was mean' it's met with 'oh? But /Gabriel/ deserved to be remembered as a Hero? Pretty sure Queen Bee did more Heroic things than FUCKING MONARCH!!'
And to clarify: this isn't a 'Mari is just an asshole who sucks' she's a kid with skewed ideas and not always understanding the Bigger Picture and the black/white morality.
Chloé is a character who was mean to her specifically for reasons Marinette doesn't understand because her reasonings are so out of the scope of something Marinette has had to deal with.
Gabriel wasn't a direct issue for Marinette, and his motivations were simple and noble 'I want to save someone'.
Also both of these things hinge on Mari's black/white mentality of 'ofc a parent loves their child no matter what and always wants the best for them, even if it's a touch misguided!'.

Pls i humbly request you share your suspicions with the class 🙏
Hah, it was a little while ago now, so I might have some of the timings of these things wrong, but I really do think it was a combination of factors, honestly. I think it probably started with the fact that he recognised he'd become a fan favourite after s1 and tried to leverage that for a bigger role during the development of s2. I suspect that conversation didn't go well, especially given Jenna did recognise he'd become a fan favourite by keeping him around (Rio was supposed to die in s1), and that they tried to smooth that over by giving his wife that tiny role in s2. That was obviously an issue though, because she was all over social media badmouthing the show and talking shit specifically about Christina throughout s2, culminating with the finale where she was liking tweets calling Beth a Trump voter among other pretty gross things (and cringe things, like about her character - who didn't even have lines - should be who Rio ends up with), when I suspect both Manny and Adelfa got in trouble as they suddenly deleted their twitter accounts.
We know from on-set accounts that his wife was on set a lot too, and I suspect she was spruiking her journaling and life coaching business (and I could say things about her businesses here, but I won't) to the actors given both Carlos and Jackie became clients of hers (and I don't remember the details, but I remember something happened late in s3 that implied it ended badly with Jackie). Which, y'know, if she was, it wouldn't surprise me if that was also causing frustration given people were trying to work and you've got your co-worker's wife hanging around trying to be your life coach.
He and her both pretty clearly had a problem with the attention Brio was getting from fans too as they would untag him from edits on Instagram, and whenever Beth and Rio had a romantic scene they would post about them (as in, Manny and Adelfa) having sex on Instagram which was, y'know. Also pretty cringe, to me at least lol. That actually got worse once it was announced Christina was getting a divorce too, so take that as you will.
On top of that, Manny had also been posting a bit of transphobic stuff on Instagram around s2, which is awful anyway, but especially so given s2 was when Isaiah publicly started to transition and the writers decided to write that into Ben's storyline (even more so given Isaiah was literally a child at this point - he was only 15 when they were filming s2). There are photos of him and Manny hanging out at the table read, so hopefully it wasn't something Isaiah had seen or felt, but Mae in particular was close to Isaiah at the time (she clearly took her role as his TV mum seriously, which is sweet) and on social media a bit, so I wouldn't be surprised if that played a role in escalating cast tension too.
I do also suspect he probably was genuinely frustrated by the size of his role when the marketing team relied on him so heavily to promote the show too, which I do think is fair.
So yes, this is all a long, roundabout way of saying that I suspect it all kind of started over Manny wanting a bigger role only to realise he was never going to be a lead, and that was compounded by a whole range of other factors. I think by the end of the show too that he felt it was holding him back and was lowkey dialling it in, which probably didn't help cast tension when the show obviously meant a lot to Christina, Retta and Mae. He did get a flurry of small roles at the end of the series between Mayans, Westworld and Ironheart, which I think was probably good for his ego and made him feel he didn't need GG, but the fact that he gave everyone that ultimatum so late in the negotiations for s5, according to Retta - - I think he probably burnt both Netflix and NBCU, on top of Jenna, which I think we're seeing the fallout of now in how his career's since stalled.
If you want my full blown conspiracy theory though (and I will emphasise this is a conspiracy theory, haha) I do think there's a possibility that he and Christina had an affair that ended badly too.

S3 EP21 (The Cloud Minders) oookay I genuinely don’t know what to think of that title
Anyway:
- OMG Kirk actually records his diaries on the bridge that’s so funny
- The chair swivelled so hard when Kirk got out of it that he had to go back to steady it with his hand
- The got roped into this one… (you see cause there’s a rope. It’s funny I promise)
- hi Margaret, I see you’re back (referring to the fact that Margaret Armen wrote this one)
- KICK !
Tumblr media
- “I have never before met a Vulcan, sir.” “Nor I a work of art, madam.” I’d melt personally
- I have a feeling the disrupters have very reasonable demands
- WHAT THE FUCK THAT GUY JUST JUMPED
- Kirk sleeping while Spock internally monologues contemplates. Relationship goals.
- OKAY but the back of Droxine’s dress is so fucking cool. Peacock aesthetic.
- OKAY but like this other lady’s dress tho. The deeper blue. (Self note: draw Spock and McCoy in the dresses)
- ICKY ICK NO KIRK NO
- “You only take a mate once every seven years.” Yeah but he’s married to the doctor and captain aboard the ship
- Droxine wants him so bad goddamn
- “Extreme feminine beauty… is always… disturbing… madam.” “Spock!” As soon as Kirk calls him he’s outta there.
- Vanna is in the right here. Droxine is awful.
- This is such a good episode omg
- it’s showing how rich people delude themselves and justify having lower classes by reducing people to functions and workers.
- FLASHING LIVHTS HOLY HELL (careful showing this to your photosensitive friends)
- Is Kirk going to get put in the torture machine this episode? (Edit: no)
- Spock, Droxine is a rich idiot who is very used to justifying her actions with self inflicted ignorance, DO NOT PERSUE HER
- RAHHH WE LOVE VANNA
- hiii McCoy hiiiiiiiii
- no fuck off mccoy fuck off doesn’t matter if they’re slightly intellectually ‘inferior’ they still deserve rights and they’re still obviously intelligent life
- oh okay the gas is causing slight brain damage but still. The disrupters are in the right. And they’re gonna help them, yay!
- The Advisor said “erect” lol
- Kirk, obviously the Advisor knows that in order to stay in power he needs the Troglytes to stay confused, disorganized, and separate from their part of society… he’s doing this ON PURPOSE
- Kirk, go down there and punch the Advisor, please
- “Captain, if you are apprehended deliberately violating the High Advisor’s orders, he will be within his rights to have you executed if he chooses.” “If you’re about to suggest that you contact Vanna, the answer is negative, Spock. That goes for you too, Bones.” Bones so readily goes to suggest himself but is immediately shut down. Kirk knows their bullshit
Tumblr media
- “Hours can be centuries, just as words can be lies.” That goes so hard wtf
- So why doesn’t Kirk beam out of there with her and directly to the caves? Well there wasn’t any trouble anyway but whatever
- LMAO the mask is so silly omg omg
- What the fuck. With his bare hands? (Edit: I’m talking about mining rocks. Promise.)
- Why did he cause a cave in? Omg he’s an idiot.
- Kirk is so done with these idiots. He’s just gonna put them in a cave and let the gasses get them
- Kirk’s not doing well… McCoy and Spock are very worried about him
- HE KICKED ONE OF THE MORTAE OUT OF HIS HANDS
- Kirk’s ass I really like Kirk’s fighting style, lots of kicks and a little bit of whacking
Tumblr media
- “I don’t like filters or even masks. I like the word ‘protector’ much better.” Did some Trekkie’s call masks this during the pandemic?
- KIRK DO NOT KISS HER
(He doesn’t but the vibes were terrible)

Thinking more about Bruce Maddox…
PIC S1 is so foul to Data, and Maddox is particularly awful to him.
From Data's perspective, he went from living on the Enterprise a free and emotional being in 2379 to a brain box on Maddox’s desk incapable of interaction in the late 2380s. Which was basically Maddox’s view of Data when he met him - a box on wheels. (I have a whole other post half-written about this and how deeply traumatizing PIC S1 was for Data and how Maddox’s isolation of Data drove him to suicide but that’s too long for here…)
Maddox should have never kept B-4's body for research, and especially shouldn't have kept Data's consciousness for research. They should have been treated like organic people and put to rest. Data never allowed Maddox access to Lore or Lal in his lifetime, though it seems he and Soong has gotten hold of them by PIC S3.
Not only was he conducting weird experiments on their corpses, but Maddox was explicitly doing it to violate Data’s reproductive rights.
Clearly Maddox sees Data as property when he just makes him a bunch of children post-mortem without considering the ethics of the situation.
Data's children now (biosynths) aren't even remotely similar to him or the daughter he DID choose create (Lal). Maybe Data wouldn't even approve of this new direction.
If Maddox absolutely couldn't do it without Data's neural engram, which seems to be the case, it's inarguably a violation of his reproductive rights. He is using his essence to give life to more synthetic lifeforms.
At the very least, it’s like taking his organs post-mortem without consent. Worf was allowed to refuse a life-saving blood donation to a Romulan in TNG's "The Enemy," but Data's ENTIRE FUCKING CONSCIOUSNESS can just be taken for research without any regard for the philosophical implications? That's not equal treatment -- Data is still a second-class citizen in the Federation and Maddox's eyes.
And now that Data’s back in PIC S3, instead of being able to experience a broader humanity, he will be thrust into the galactic spotlight as the progenitor of a whole civilization that idolizes him. There go his dreams of getting married and building another android that is in any way reminiscent of himself.

Bridgerton S3 Episode 4 Reaction
So I finally watched the last episode of Part 1 and it was everything I wanted it to be! It was so steamy and full of Colin angst. I am going to write and react about what I saw so if you want to read on!
First off, the rest of the Featheringtons are trash. They're hilarious, but horrible sisters and mother to Penelope. I will one day write an essay about the trauma that Pen has gone through and etc. because ugh. Now on to Lord Debling who is adorable with his plant present.
Yes a nod to Penelope sitting at that settee and enjoying the view of Bridgerton House aka where her love Colin is at. I think she isn't leading Lord Debling on here, she genuinely is getting tired of being in the corner, playing what if and ready for a real relationship. She's not in love with Lord Debling, but ready to accept something real over her years of fantasizing over Colin for nothing.
I agree with people who wrote that the scene that Colin is rereading his journal, he's going over what Penelope has read so that he knows what she read and enjoyed and what would be going through her mind. Lady Bridgerton for sure knows that Colin is in love with Penelope! She knows he's in love and he couldn't take his eyes off of Penelope. And she's no idiot, the boy is acting love sick and she can smell that a mile away.
Tillie Arnold is an amusement, but not endgame.
Is it just me or is Lord Anderson not that funny or charming? I don't mind him courting Violet or anything to do with his person, but I don't get it. Maybe I'm taking cues from Lady Danbury who is an impeccable judge of character, but I'm meh about him.
LOL! I love Queen Charlotte and Brimsley! The step another pace backwards comment was gold. "You read me too well."
Awww look at Francesca's little face! She likes John so much! They just get each other and the two actors portray that so well. The joy they have when together, the unspoken silences, and the chemistry they have is evident and I like them!
Lord Samadani is portrayed perfectly as well- he is handsome and dashing and everything that a traditional girl would have wanted. But not what Francesca wants.
Aw, poor Cressida. I never thought I would think or say that, but here we are. The writers have reframed her into a victim of the ton and has tried to free her from the trope of Mean Blonde Bitch.
Oh, Pen it's so obvious you're staring at Colin. Even Lord Debling can tell something's up. I really like Lord Debling, I think he's so cute! I know he's not endgame, but he's doing everything right so far. Asking her how he would secure her hand and putting out feelers of her reaction to a proposal.
Oho the infamous prostitute scene! Yes, he seems incredibly disinterested. Of course his enthusiasm is elsewhere it's with Penelope! I don't mind this scene so much because it just heightens Colin's disinterest with any woman except for Penelope.
Ha! I love how Francesca just accosted Lord Kilmartin! She knows what she wants and it's this man! They are so cute and awkward and adorable! Francesca wants love, but doesn't want to or know how to play games like Daphne did. They are the on the spectrum romance I didn't know I wanted or needed.
Ooh more Cressida backstory and it is grim. Her family and house are so cold. Yeesh. No wonder she is who she is and does what she does. Eloise is sweet to come by and check up on Cressida, she's a good friend. Her father seems like a pill.
I like the Mondrich's and understand them having class/adjustment issues about suddenly becoming part of the ton. It's good to have some contrast and real people part of the main story, but I also don't understand Will's determination to not see how it looks for him to be serving as bartender. With that act he seemingly doesn't understand the whole have/have not system the ton is based on. Wake up, Will!
These assholes. I never liked these puffed up men of the ton who parade about as rakes, but are more likely just assholes who've slept with a girl or two, who they've most likely had to pay. I'm not a prude or judgmental, but I am with Colin and would be sick of them too.
Penelope being wary of her engagement with Lord Debling makes sense. The girl has been in love with Colin Bridgerton for years and still is and so it would be hard for her to just throw that all away and go with Lord Debling, whom she is not in love with. She's not opposed to him, but also waiting for true love.
Ha! We get more love sick and pining Colin! It's sad to see him like this, but also sweet poetic justice for all the years Penelope was pining alone for him. Lady Bridgerton is such a good mother! She knows Colin like the back of her hand and I love the part where she talks about armor. She knows he's been playing a part lately and wants him to be his Cinnamon Roll self.
She knew exactly what she was doing when she mentions Penelope and getting a proposal! That minx! She's sharp and sly and knows exactly what to say to get a response from her children. Lol.
The ballet was gorgeous! That hair piece OMG it was stunning! I like the Queen, but no Francesca will not end up with Lord Samadani!
The ballet sequence is interesting because of Penelope's reaction to it. The ballet is a romance story and Penelope is wrapped up in it. Other people are admiring the artistry and appreciating the dancers, but Penelope is swept up in it. Which proves that a loveless marriage will not do for her.
See, back to Lord Anderson and I get why he would like Violet, but not why she would like him back. They are reading friends to me than late in life love match. I just don't see instant chemistry or anything.
Tillie is beautiful and amusing, but eventually Benedict is going to chafe at the hiding things and lack of romance. Clearly Tillie is her own woman and not needing a man, which will turn Benedict off eventually I believe.
I actually like the Cressida and Eloise relationship. What am I saying? But I do! I think it's cute. Cressida is in sore need of a friend to soften her and Eloise needs one that listens to her.
Yes! Colin thinking back to that one day and the glass and the looks and the comments about eyes. They were so close and comfortable with each other because they were friends before feelings and etc got in the way.
More Francesca and John and they are very cute. She's abrupt with him at first because she thinks he doesn't like her, but lights up when she sees his gesture. This man gets her to her very soul and it's very cute. Lemonade isn't going to cut it man! She has someone who reads her very soul! The queen's face lol!
Excuse me! Colin is here for a purpose, boys, out of the way!
Oof, you were being honest, but way to fumble the ball Lord Debling. He knows that Penelope loves romance and romance novels and couldn't throw her a bone about one day being in love. Maybe that's what it is and wasn't meant to be, but oof.
Here comes unhinged Colin and I love it! I have been spoiled by this from all over and here it is! Yes walking right up to a dancing couple like that quite scandalous! This is going to be good.
Eros and Psyche indeed! Cressida can be a cow at times, but she's right here. Everything she's putting out here is right. They are old friends, but something is going on between them and directly across the street of that window Penelope's obsessed with. She gives Lord Debling all the answers and clues to put the pieces together.
I feel for Penelope because she feels like Lord Debling is her one and only shot at a husband, but Lord Debling is not a fool and has figured out about her and Colin. He's not wrong and the two of them would not have been a good match, but I feel bad for Penelope.
Colin running down this carriage, yes very unhinged behavior indeed! The boy is lovestruck! Those eyes when he says he cannot leave her alone! They are so in love and the total opposite reaction we see from him with the prostitutes. He is all emotion, all heart on his sleeve and I love to see it.
They're getting it on, they're doing it! Eeek, squee, all the feels! That moment after they start kissing where they look at each other to see if this is real and yes, yes it is! Then they get back into it hot and heavy. He's going for more and she gives the nod of consent. Yes, let's do this Colin! I've been spoiled about the fingering but it is hot! Yes Go get it girl!
Aww that moment of laughter between the two so cute! I've seen other posts on this and it's a moment where they are two old friends and giggling together and that is the nature of their romance and relationship and I agree. It's utterly adorable.
Ok!!! Ugh now I know why so many people can't wait for part 2. Fortunately for me, it's only a couple more days and I can't wait!!!! We're going to have Lady Whistledown drama, Eloise drama, a lot of Polin sex, and a marriage! I can't wait I can't wait!

Comics on this awful week?
Absolute Superman #1 - I had a grim foreboding leading up to this week that this book was going to hit hard in part because of the result of the election. I take no joy in having been correct, even though I did love this. Maybe it's the aftermath of the election, but starting this off with a clear cut Champion of the Oppressed Superman makes me extremely happy. He's willing to fight and mess those Peacemakers up, but he retains the compassion we expect from heroic Supermen. Right now all I want to read is a power fantasy story about an underdog immigrant alien going up against an evil megacorp, and this book is delivering that in spades. I like how Aaron has flipped all the major foundational pieces of Superman and positioned them in the AU as weaknesses at first. Kal's farming upbringing on Krypton was the opposite of the idealized life he had in the mainstream universe. His shield, which was a symbol of hope for Krypton in the mainline, is instead a mark of shame on Krypton in the AU. But Aaron takes that and manages to make it a source of strength regardless for Superman. Clearly his low class status on Krypton is where he gets his affinity for outcasts on Earth. He wears the symbol of laborers proudly and gives it a new meaning. It's all great stuff, and clearly Aaron has something to say about our modern reality that I think is only going to get more hard hitting with Trump's re-election.
Cool to see Lois start off as an enemy as I expected. If you're going to take all of Superman's comforts, you can't leave his iconic love interest untouched! I'm betting Absolute Lois is a daddy's girl, that older guy might even be Sam Lane, and I don't think it will be love at first sight for Supes and her. I'm freaking hyped for Brainiac to be the first villain, Brainiac desperately needs stories that do more with him beyond having him try to bottle Metropolis, and Brainiac working for a megacorp is so unlike his mainline counterpart that I want to see where this goes. Glad he has the bottles, and one of them even appears to be Kryptonian as per norm. If Brainiac is *merely* working for R&D, who is the CEO of Lazarus? Could it be Kobra as I have speculated? Ultra-Humanite? Either one would be a cool choice. Absolute DC is now 3/3, I'm totally invested in seeing where this universe goes.
My Adventures With Superman #6 - A nice heartwarming wrap up to a sadly totally overlooked mini. My guy Bloodsport makes it through alive which gives me hope he could show up in future seasons of MAWS. This ends with Clark salvaging Amazo's core and teases that Amazo might get rebuilt in a new body. S2 ended with them likewise having an intact Brainiac core. I'm thinking this mini is foreshadowing that we will have a similar situation in S3 where Lex gets his hands on the core and builds Brainiac a new body (hopefully one more like his comic or DCAU appearance).
Action Comics #1074 - Henry's art improved! I liked his depiction of Krypton anyway. I'm warming up more and more to the main plotline. While I don't love Waid's take on the Phantom Zone, his take on Krypton is closely in line with what I think Krypton should be: technologically advanced while socially regressive. I loved that Kal was acknowledged as older than his own father, really adds to the tragedy of Krypton's death to have Jor and Lara die young. Kara's backup is good too, her new found robot friend makes me smile. No clue what's going on still!
Aliens vs. Avengers #2 - Not as full of twists as the first issue, but still prime Hickman.
Ultimates #6 - Wow I was completely wrong about who gets killed. Tony?!? I don't buy that he will stay dead mind you, but I did not see that coming. Alright my guess is either we're going to get an "Ultimate Vision" based on Tony's brainwaves, or that DoomReed is going to use the Immortus Engine to change Tony's fate.

6 episodes into s2 you should nawt have this many ppl saying “wait how are they going to wrap this up well in 3 episodes”. i guess the tradeoff would be that we’d wait another 4 years for a s3, but thats what this show needed, BADLY. it barely feels like i’m watching one cohesive narrative, and instead i’m watching.. Stuff. Happening. In waves.
nobody’s talking to each other, the plot never breathes. how did s1 put all the kid stuff in 3 episodes and relax a perfect first narrative in the remaining 6, while this one feels like it was dragging its feet to the “point” of the season (war) in 6 episodes, while forcing characters through arcs and revelations in the span of literal minutes and glossing over things like “caitlyn started Arcane TSA and wanted to use chemical warfare and make false arrests on citizens because they’re poor”. that kind of arc does not get resolved in 2 seconds just by seeing your ex girlfriend again.
not to mention that mel and ekko are still suffering from extremely limited screen-time; AGAIN because this show has god awful pacing right now! and it looks like the last 3 episodes are going to be about pilt/zaun teaming up against noxus, making ambessa the big bad and everyone else the heroes. that seems like a very lazy, ugly ending to a story that has been about contained class dynamics for 2 seasons!

Hiiii I was wondering what your top 5 series are because I'm bored and I don't wanna do schoolwork so I'm gonna distract myself with screens
thanks for asking
my ultimate comfort show is friends. I've seen every episode a billion times, but it still makes me laugh and I still feel like I'm watching it for the first time. it's nostalgic and it just feels like home. I would like if there was more diversity tho..
i love how I met your mother (except for that awful ending). its so comforting and the show discusses real problems that young adults face like unemployment, divorce, infertility, losing a parent etc. characters go through real problems that real people face.
heartstopper obviously. again, I feel like I'm mentioning a lot of comfort shows rather than genuinly good shows but heartstopper is just.. so perfect. it is a bit cringe at times but teenagers are actually like that. everyone in that friend group is so loyal and kind and there's no drama and overall toxicness you'd find in most netflix shows like riverdale, elite etc. and I feel like this is one of the first shows I've seen with good queer representation. the paris squad remind me a lot of my friends and I, and we actually watched the show together. and we're gonna binge all of s3 and then talk about it (it's gotten to be a bit of a tradition)
id like to say that I love the owl house, even though I've never officially seen it. I've watched a lot of clips of it on YouTube and I know what happens and whenever I feel stressed or overwhelmed with school work, I'd watch like a 40 minute video of lumity. and I also relate to luz noceda on a personal level. I found out about this show only last year, when it was on it's final season and I was 16. I wish my 12 year old self watched it, because she would have LOVED the owl house and found comfort in this show. watching the owl house at 16 and 17 for the first time shocked me because I felt like my 11 and 12 year old self had come to life (and btw we even look really similar so there's that..). I just started watching Hilda and it's a lot like the owl house and Hilda reminds me of myself too, so idk. they're both really great shows
and lastly i'd probably have to go with stranger things. I love the gravity falls-dark suburban-fall vibe the first two seasons had. season three was really fun, but I didn't like the fourth that much. I also hate how it takes so long for each season to come out. again, I related to robin a lot and I love to play DND with some of my new friends. I started watching stranger things when I was around 11 with my old friends and I remember collaborating on pinterst boards and stuff, so that was fun. i'm going to watch the last season with them too.
ive seen a bunch of episodes of doctor who and some clips on YouTube and I love that. I need to properly sit down and watch Dr. who
superwholock in general is great, but I don't really feel like mentioning spn and Sherlock because of all the queerbating and homophobia surrounding the shows. (sherlock's amazing though)
i should also probably mention derry girls. this show is literally a love letter to the 90s. I guess anyone who grew up in a middle class housegold in the county could relate to this (my mom definitely does). like heartstopper, it's one of those shows that portray teenagers as they are. Heartstopper deals with mental health and self harming, while derry girls is a lot lighter. the characters are so quirky and loveable. and while I was born in 2007, it feels really nostalgic. and it has one of the best soundtracks I've seen in a show. (the best 90s indie like sixpence none the richer and the cranberries so yay)
i know you asked for five, but one day at a time is SUCH an amazing show too. it's about a latina family (grandma, mom, daughter and son) and it's so funny and really informative and just an overall fun family sitcom, but it doesn't shy away from dealing with important issues like racism, immigrant families, growing up in a three generational household, raising a teenager daughter who's a lesbian, being a military nurse and the trauma you have to deal with afterwards etc. elena is a lesbian and she's so nerdy and I just love her so much <333
lastly, probably gilmore girls. it becomes shit after about season 4 and you'll get annoyed by the characters but the first few seasons are really good. it's really cozy and I feel like all the shows that I've mentioned have a similar theme (cozy, autumnal type stuff) and this list wouldn't be complete without gilmore girls.
anyway, that's it. peace out

What movies would you recommend for good examples of period costumes?
Ok since I could talk for literally hours about this I’m going to stick to periods that are show adjacent or relevant otherwise I’ll be here all day.
18th century (Lestat’s time):
Barry Lyndon (1975) - takes place in the 1760s throughout Europe so a little before Lestat’s time but honestly fashion changed very slowly back then so it’s pretty much the vibe we’re gonna see in s3 I believe. I think this is essential to understanding the period’s masculinity as it features mostly men and is also not about romance. You also get to see class differences in men’s dress as the character starts off in a very different social position from where he ends up. I also think Sam in his Lestat get up from set leaks looks sooo much like Ryan O’Neal in this movie I think it will be a major inspiration.
Dangerous Liaisons (1988) - this is pretty much smack dab in the middle of Lestat’s human life (pre-revolutionary) and it’s one of the few romantic dramas that actually allows its leading men to look period accurate cause somehow Hollywood decided calves and stockings were too gay for their leading men who usually show up to dinner parties in riding gear which would NEVER happen. Anyways I also think the character of Valmont is probably another big Lestat influence.
I also think movies like Amadeus (1984) and The Favourite (2018) are helpful in establishing to viewers that men did look ridiculous back then with big ass wigs and face caked full of makeup and it was not considered gay or unmanly!!
Gilded Age / Edwardian and beyond (Louis’s time):
The Age of Innocence (1993) - takes place in the 1870s so again a bit before Louis but I think now it’s important to establish that fashion trends are moving a bit faster as you’ll see a few decades later the big ass bustle look is no longer on trend but this is just a beautiful film to look at if you want a good intro to film costuming.
The trio of Merchant-Ivory’s EM Forster adaptations: A Room with a View, Maurice and Howard’s End are nice examples of early 20th century wear and again you finally get to see more class differences in dress. Also great references for men’s wear.
Daughters of the Dust (1991) - this takes place in Georgia around 1902 so getting quite close to the start of the show and it has absolutely gorgeous design like it’s the women’s silhouette so spot on. Good reference for the costumes on black women in the show. Also I think this is one case where the flowy down do’s hair in a period film isn’t anachronistic cause of the specific story they’re telling otherwise I’m usually like why are you an adult woman walking around outside with your hair down.
Passing (2021) - takes place in 1920s New York and features really lovely b&w cinematography and costuming wise it’s a really beautiful representation of upper middle class black families of the time and also has very interesting contrasts with the white upper class. Amazing book too, I highly recommend both.
For periods beyond 1930 I actually recommend just watching films from that era cause they give a more accurate representation of what was fashionable then not filtered through today’s beauty standards. For example the thin penciled eyebrow is almost never seen in modern period films cause no actress wants to shave off their eyebrows 💀 and their hair is almost always too long cause they don’t wanna chop off their hair.
Here are some good fashion recs of 30s-40s:
Trouble in Paradise (1932), It Happened One Night (1934), The Awful Truth (1937), Imitation of Life (1934), Notorious (1946), Mildred Pierce (1945), Gilda (1946), Orphee (1949), and a bunch others you can ask me for recs based on more specific criteria and I’d be happy to provide!
