Defiant and bilingual/trilingual Whumpee, they're screaming and cursing in words they think Whumper don't understand. 'Pendejo, Scheiße, merde, Сука, putang ina mo, anjing, cibai,' or anything they understand.
Whumper, confused, respond, 'What?'
Whumpee just laugh, 'No ❤️️'
Or perhaps, just perhaps, Whumper do understand and reply in the same language.

I can't stop thinking about that one time that I was studying abroad and I had the WORST cold of my life and I took my temperature and burst into tears because it was 102 and I didn't know how to translate that into Celsius (I was so delirious I didn't remember that automatic thermometers can like... just switch to Celsius for you) and also I couldn't remember how to say "I'm sick" in my host language and just... all the potential of this scenario guys I am rattling the bars of my enclosure

Spiderwebs #24: Heather Performs A Lobotomy
Masterlist
content: lab whump, captivity, immortal whumpee, organ stuff, drugging, needles/injections
· • —– ٠ ✤ ٠ —– • ·
Heather knew he was asleep, one afternoon, barely moving to breathe and curled up tightly under the blanket. She shook him, but he didn’t stir. She had given him the drug a few minutes earlier under the guise of another painkiller. When she shone a light in his eyes, he did not react at all, and she was certain she could proceed with her work.
Keeping him awake, while effective in sending a message, was inconvenient for dissections she actually needed to have done. Heather had mostly worked on cadavers during her education. Cadavers did not plead or beg and, most importantly, they kept perfectly still. For this, she wanted to be precise.
She placed him on the dining table, with a tarp underneath, then tied her hair back and pulled on her gloves. She was curious to see what was under that skull of his—the brain, that is. It would be a difficult procedure to enact. Permanent damage was possible, of course, and she simply didn’t know how to go about it. Saw through bone or dig through the back of the eye? It would be good to have samples of brain tissue, but cutting through a skull was much more complicated than simply pushing under the soft parts of the face. And, anyways, it was better to start with something small before she got ahead of herself.
Heather steadied the needle over his face, as she pried his eyelids open with her other hand. She wasn’t exactly sure how quickly an injury like this would heal. He had recovered nearly instantly from the bullets. He didn’t seem to change much after burning to death, either.
The needle slid easily behind the curve of the eye. She remembered the way her psychology professor had described it: severing a connection of nerves, and therefore severing some part of the self that acted and was able to feel. It blunted a part of the soul. Although this was not the time to be superstitious; such theological concepts would be of no use to her. She was getting distracted.
She hesitated, then pushed the needle in.
Something gave way underneath it. She winced. I definitely hit something… Something wet and yielding had been punctured. Or cut. And that was all she needed to do. She slid the needle out, watching as a thin line of blood pulled off its underside like spit from teeth. To ensure the effect would last, she pushed the needle into his other eye.
Jackie shifted. She nearly dropped the needle.
He was tensing up, moving, waking up. I must have given an incorrect dosage. It was always a risk, when some drugs did nothing at all for him, and others would only work in lethal amounts. He opened his other eye. His gaze moved slowly, unfocused as it passed over her.
She pried the needle out. A bit of blood speckled his face, but he didn’t react.
“I have a headache,” he said, slurring the words.
“How much does it hurt? One to ten.”
He shrugged. He tried to get up from the table.
She clicked her tongue and gently pressed him onto his back. “No. Stay there. There’s something I need to do. You won’t move, right?”
He didn’t look pleased, but he didn’t move either.
Luckily, she had guessed this might happen, so she had already prepared lidocaine to administer local anaesthesia. It wouldn’t put him to sleep, but it would numb him. She placed the injection above the side of his neck, below the jaw.
“What’s your favourite colour?” she asked as she pressed down on the injection.
“I don’t have one.”
“Really? I thought you would.” She removed the injection. He’s coherent, she thought, and he’s answering my questions, but he doesn’t seem to be reacting appropriately to the situation. Jackie usually didn’t like the idea of surgery. Either it was the drugs, or she truly had damaged some part of his brain. That’s still a minor cut, though. I want to see how a fatal injury would heal.
While the anaesthetic took effect, she prepared her scalpel, the drill, and the electrical bone saw. Jackie stayed quiet and still for his part, which she was happy to see. When she cut the skin open and drilled through the skull, eventually cutting it away, he didn’t even wince.
She reached into the inward valley of his skull and inserted the saw into the centre of the frontal lobe. It was incredibly difficult to cut out. The knotted pink flesh healed almost immediately. Nevertheless, she managed with some time and a lot of splattered blood, after which she placed the halved organ into a large glass jar.
Even cut out of him, pressed against the glass, it was reforming, albeit not as well as it should have been—becoming misshapen against the walls of its container, running out of space to mold with and soon slowing down its growth. She set the jar down on the kitchen counter and shook her wrist out. Her arm felt sore already.
The tarp shifted and crackled behind her.
Heather spun around to see Jackie sitting upright, touching his newly-healed head and glancing at his unbloodied palm with mild curiosity.
“Don’t—” She marched over and seized both his hands. “You’re a terrible patient. I told you to stay still.”
“Sorry. You shoulda tied me down, doc.” He still seemed to be mostly out of it. It was a fairly powerful concoction of drugs, after all. He gave her a loopy, puppy-dog grin, smiling despite the severe head wound like the big idiot he was…
She smiled back—then she immediately turned away from him. I can’t give him the wrong idea! Ruining my work the first chance he gets. He thinks he’s hilarious, doesn’t he?  “I was being nice by forgoing the restraints, but I’ll keep that in mind for the next experiment.”
“What’s that jar on the counter?” he asked, leaning forwards. “Wait, I’ll guess—”
“It's none of your concern.” She picked up her notebook and pen and wrote a few things down. “Now, Jackie, I know you might not be in your right senses after all that. I need you to listen to me carefully and answer my questions to the best of your ability. I cut out a significant part of your frontal lobe. In a typical human being, this would result in death, or at least unconsciousness.”
“But I’m special.”
“Don’t flatter yourself. We don’t know if the damage is permanent yet. I’ll start with testing your memory and such. What’s your last name?”
“What’s a last name?” he asked innocently.
“Don’t play games with me.”
He batted his eyelashes.
She sighed. “If you behave, I’ll give you a lollipop.”
“My name is Jackie Rockwell,” he said. “Twenty-one, born and raised in the States, about five-foot-seven. There are eighteen groups in the periodic table. The smallest land animal is the Etruscan shrew. Level, racecar, and radar are all examples of common palindromes.”
“Smartass.”
“Chienne.”
“Cabrón.”
“I’m still waiting for my lollipop, doc.”
Pequeña comadreja. Silently, she pulled out a lollipop from her pocket and handed it to him.
“Thanks,” he said, tearing the plastic off. “You were saying?”
“Right. As I was saying, I think it’s safe to assume the removal of brain matter did not affect your memory or speech. Your nervous system doesn’t change when it heals. I was afraid—” She stopped herself. Heather knew he would be fine. He always recovered. She had already set him on fire, and he had survived even that unscathed. It was just a shallow worry, nothing worth putting words to. “In any case, I’m glad that went over without any complications.”
“And what if something went wrong? Would you not care?”
“Nothing would…” She glanced at him. He had stopped smiling. This wasn’t a joke, apparently. “You don’t seriously think I would have let that happen, right?”
He shook his head, and his voice was sunny again. “No, you’re right. You’re completely incapable of making mistakes. I should have known. Why did I even bother to ask?” He sat up and got off the table. “What’s the time?”
“It’s half-past eight.”
“Well, I’m exhausted from doing nothing all day.” He held the lollipop like a cigarette between his teeth. “See you tomorrow?”
“Yes. I’ll take you to your room.”
Still, she was a little put-off by his sudden distrust towards her. There was something almost caustic in his cheerfulness. Maybe she was overthinking that. He was probably just acting out to get attention, the same as always. She decided to push it out of her mind and focus on other, more immediate issues.

Summary of results - Intercultural and cross-linguistic perspectives on the whump genre
Here is a summary of the results from the research thesis, "Intercultural and cross-linguistic perspectives on the whump genre"! This was part of my studying a Master of Contemporary International Studies. The research aimed to explore how whump-interested people connect with the whump genre cross-culturally and cross-linguistically.
Back in June/July this year (2023), I sent out a questionnaire open to any whump-interested person, and also invited interviews for bilingual whump-interested people. I've finally finished my thesis, and overall was awarded an A- for it!
The full thesis is available now to read on Academia.edu, and will also be available on IPU New Zealand's library website in January 2024.
Tumblr media
This research was approved for Human Research Ethics Clearance by the IPU New Zealand Research and Development Commitee on 3rd May 2023 (HREC-2023-05-03-01).
----
(NB: Due to there being an extensive amount of results, I've only summarised the key findings of the results section and a brief conclusion here. I've referenced page numbers for the full thesis if you'd like to read the extended version.)
-----
Summary of results (Questionnaire)
233 respondents | 92 different cultural/faith-based identities
The questionnaire was used to answer Research Question 1, "How do the aspects of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions and Schwartz’ universal human values reflect in the characteristics of whump genre identity?"
The questionnaire explored four themes associated with whump genre concepts - “agency,” “comfort,” “stoicism,” and “knowledge” - and found (p. 87):
For the theme of “agency,” questionnaire participants tended to perceive a greater importance for agency for the caretaker and whumper roles. This may be related to the caretaker and whumper role characters’ abilities to carry out their roles of caretaking and whumping respectively. While the cultural dimensions did not appear to be factors inherent to the theme of agency for the whumpee role in a whump genre story, this appeared to work towards supporting the cross-cultural enjoyment of whump. For the theme of “comfort,” hurt comfort, physical comfort and long-term recovery may be more accommodating of cultural dimension dynamics and have a greater capacity to fully realise the goals of Schwartz’ values. For the theme of “stoicism,” the way in which these dimensions can so diversely be applied to this theme suggests a cross-culturally applicable ground. For the theme of “knowledge,” the balance between the certainty of a known whumpee and the uncertainty of an unknown whumper indicate variable tolerance of ambiguity within the whump genre. This suggests a cross-culturally applicable ground.
Summary of results (Interview)
The full results section for the questionnaire can be read in the full thesis (pp. 61-87).
-----
31 interviewees (15 spoken, 16 written) | 24 different languages
The interview was used to answer Research Question 2, "How do bilingual whump-interested people perceive the ability to convey themes of hurt comfort (a subgenre of whump) in different languages?"
The interview questions were categorised into themes:
Theme 1: Preferences for language when interacting with fiction
Theme 2: Comparisons of different languages’ abilities to convey physical and emotional pain
Theme 3: Limitations or difficulties experienced when conveying whump in, and across, different languages
Theme 4: Cultural, social, and/or linguistic reasons influencing pronunciation of “whump”
Following transcription of the interviews, a thematic analysis involving examining code co-occurences found (p. 123):
For “Theme 1: Preferences for language when interacting with fiction,” preferences tended to be associated with the availability of media, the ability to connect with the author’s intended meaning, and the level of ease and comfort with which interviewees could engage with the fictional media. For “Theme 2: Comparisons of different languages’ abilities to convey physical and emotional pain,” interviewees’ comparisons highlighted differing ways of presenting and conveying pain in language, for example, through language features and words. Overall, interviewees felt that the languages which they were fluent in were generally equally capable of conveying physical and emotional pain, although different languages tended to approach the communicating of pain in different ways. For “Theme 3: Limitations or difficulties experienced when conveying whump in, and across, different languages,” the perceived limitations and difficulties experienced across languages tended to be associated with difficulties in conveying semantic, pragmatic and cultural meaning across languages, and tended to stem from the differences between sociolinguistic approaches to communicating ideas in languages. For “Theme 4: Cultural, social, and/or linguistic reasons influencing pronunciation of “whump,” common cultural, social and linguistic reasons for interviewees’ pronunciations of “whump” included how interviewees expected the word to sound based on their expectations of the letters in the phonological environment, the impact of a lack of having heard the word spoken aloud, sociocultural influences, intuition and language education.
Conclusions (brief exerpt from p. 130)
The full results section for the interview can be read in the full thesis (pp. 61-87). Interview transcripts (sensitive details filtered out) can be read in Appendix H (pp. 177-399).
-----
Research Question 1 explored cross-culturally applicable aspects of the whump genre. The findings suggested that themes of the whump genre accommodate variations in cultural social orientations and values, thereby enabling an interculturally common ground among whump-interested people.
Using qualitative research (interview), Research Question 2 explored how bilingual whump-interested people perceive and connect with hurt comfort themes across different languages. The findings suggest that multiple factors contribute to how bilingual whump-interested people engage with the whump genre, including but not limited to first and second languages as a tool to experience closely or otherwise distance the subject with, the availability of whump media in different languages, and manner of conveying aspects of pain and comfort through lexical, phonetic, grammatical and cultural aspects of language.
----
Thank you to everyone who participated in the research - the questionnaire and/or the interview! Your voices are all important in this kind of research, and are all very much appreciated!

Late Writeblr Intro!
Hello, friends!
I figured it was about time I made an actual blog intro of my own since I forgot to make one when I started this blog last year. Better late than never, lmao!
Pls, reblog, like, and/or reply to help boost the blog! 💕
Let's get started:
Personal Stuff! 💜🩶🖤
My name is Anna/Anya but you can call me Mystic, Ducky, or just Anya on this blog! My personal nickname is Ani and I adore it (:
I am an Asexual woman (my pronouns are she/her!) and I'm also personally an atheist who puts my faith in the spirits of Mother Nature, though I respect all other religions equally!
I'm Gen Z and Latina (Brazilian). I was raised bilingual (Brazilian Portuguese + English) and I love learning languages - currently, I'm working on learning French and Spanish! Career-wise I am studying in college to become a character designer and hopefully animator, as I want to pursue a career as an artist and writer! I also wish to have my WIPs published in the near future (:
Some fun facts about me!
My favorite shows are Critical Role, Game of Thrones, Castlevania, The Legend of Vox Machina (animated series), Star Wars, Voltron, The Dragon Prince, Avatar the Last Airbender, Legend of Korra, and DC Comics content, as well as many more lmao. I love watching movies and series!
My favorite Vox Machina characters are Vax'ildan and Percy (:
I am a younger sister 💖
My hair is short and curly (pixie style, similar to the haircut Rapunzel has at the end of the Tangled movie!)
I adore listening to music, especially songs that can inspire me to write my WIPs! Playlists are a huge part of my writing process and something I really enjoy making.
I'm currently rereading Shadow and Bone (+ Six of Crows) and I am always looking for more good dark fantasy/historical fantasy books to read so book recs are always welcome! I also am a huge fan of the Percy Jackson series and Trials of Apollo (by Rick Riordan), though I'm usually more of a gritty/dark fantasy fan (like Game of Thrones)!
I have three dogs and two cats!😺🐶
I know how to play the piano, though I haven't done that in a while because things have been chaotic for me, but I'd like to start playing regularly again in my winter vacation.
I have worn glasses since I was 5 years old and have terrible eyesight without them (and some days with them, lol, so bear with me).
My friends and I are doing a DnD campaign every Sunday, where I play as a half-elf rogue named Aeryn (he/him). I'm adoring this adventure so far, it's so fun!!!
I love to bake and am rather good at it, but am a painfully average cook lmao (some specific recipes I make are actually rlly good, but it depends a lot on my mood and the 'alignment of the stars' lol)
I want to learn how to knit/crochet! 🧶
I'm a theater nerd and love musicals (:
About my Writing!🏹⌛
I write fictional works mostly in the genre of fantasy (high fantasy/epic fantasy/dark fantasy/historical fantasy/urban fantasy, etc. You name it!) and science fiction (space opera/cyberpunk/superhero, etc).
My works usually revolve around themes such as epic quests, secrets, adventure, rebels fighting an oppressive system, sibling bonds, acceptance/respect, outcasts, and much, much more! I love fluff and whump equally, and though my stories tend to focus on serious topics (or at least darker/heavier themes) within a fantasy/sci-fi setting, I like to have a good bit of humor, lighthearted fun, and comedy to my stories to lighten up the mood!

saw some posts about bilingual caretakers and it reminded me of how before i got medication i had really bad migranes that lasted for days accompanied with frequent vomiting and my bf would just talk to me in slovakian and i didnt understand a word but it was super comforting just listening to him talk and not having to think about anything...anyways thinking that might be something for a whump scenario

New Introduction [Searching for Moots]
Good timezone, my lovely dreamers!
It's been a long while since last I'd been active in tumblr, but I figured getting to meet new people would be worthwhile as I've made my comeback!
To start, I answer to many names but primarily- you can call me Clay or Danny. I hoard names like a possessive dragon (/lh), but that's also in part due to my kin-list and I carry their names around proudly. (And also the fact I'm a system)
I'm bodily an adult, 23 years old to be exact and counting! I use they/them pronouns, though neos are fair game at times (such as pup/pupself and ghost-themed pronouns).
Now, I am a multi-fandom blogger and enthusiast of neurodivergent content- especially as I connect to a lot of characters.

✦ Current Fixations are Teenage Superhero Cartoons
✦ I'm a roleplayer! (I can be a bit picky with who I roleplay with, and maybe further down the line- I can send out a request)
✦ Profound animal lover. I don't claim to be an expert-
✦ I kin hard.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? either my aos high school au (the outline is delicious but it refuses to be written) or that kate/yelena road trip thing. i actually really want to finish that one too but it’s been soooo long
16. What are your writing strengths? i’ve been told i keep things in character really well esp. dialogue, which is super cool and i’m really glad things come across that way. one thing that helps is to take real lines from the character and write them out to see how their speech actually looks written and not spoken, i figure stuff out better that way
17. What are your writing weaknesses? umm sitting down. writing. completing literally anything. not deciding i hate my wip and deleting the entire thing (i’m getting better about the last one, at least i keep my old drafts now)
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? well the only other language i’ve done dialogue in is russian and i do not remotely know russian. so that part is google translate. that said, every “writing bilingual characters” advice post has said that real people don’t mix languages midsentence, but i really think that depends because where i’m from, you hear a lot of spanglish, which is definitely mixed throughout the sentence, so you know. don’t believe everything you see online i guess? anyway those are my thoughts
19. First fandom you wrote for? ough i’ve been writing for a long time so i don’t even really know. but first official fic? gotta be criminal minds. jemily <3
20. Favorite fic you’ve written? GODDD I DON’T KNOWW!!!!! maybe we’ve got to hold on to what we’ve got. i like whump and i like writing it, and i think it’s really in character not to mention it was very popular.
this took me forever to finish but trust me it was soo much fun i love talking about myself it turns out <3

Blorbo In Need Of A Good Home
Responds to: Damián or Marcus during work hours
Likes: True Crime Podcasts, House Plants, Cooking, Second- Hand Books
Extrovert. Needs social nourishment. Must have a companion.
Has a tendency to isolate self when feeling poorly. Prone to dips in mood and appetite but overall friendly, outgoing, and talkative.
Tumblr media
You can adopt Damián as your blorbo today! If you would like to learn more about Damián and his home environment (Nobody Ends Up Dead in a Bathtub, Everyone Keeps Their Organs) you can read about it here.
Damián would be the perfect blorbo for a reader who is interested in a character with some mild angst, is very handsome, and who looks after a younger sibling. Damián is a good candidate for whump-lovers and fans of romance!
Please make sure your environment is right for Damián before inquiring. This blorbo needs a specific balance of quiet, personal time and social stimulation.
Additional facts about Damián:
Early 30s
Bilingual! Damián grew up speaking both Spanish and English fluently
Smart! He's sharp and well-educated and well-read
Independent queer sex worker and escort who's built his business from the ground up

20 Questions For Fic Writers
I was tagged by @nostalgic-woodwind and I thought it looked fun, so here we go!
1.) How many stories do you have on A03? 59 on my main account and 5 on scattered other accounts!
2.) What's your total A03 word count? 144k on my main and an extra 37k on my other ones!
3.) What fandoms do you write for? Way too many!!!
4.) Top 5 fics by kudos? 1- Class Outing (BNHA, 1,399 kudos) 2- from a different blog (Disney, 900 kudos) 3- Only Heaven I'll Be Sent To (Resident Evil, 857 kudos) 4- Cold Palms, Warm Words (Twilight, 691 kudos) 5- The Doctor's Office (Twilight, 521)
5.) Do you respond to comments? Only on tumblr!
6.) What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Probably Something Wrong (BNHA) but also Wrapped In Silken Dreams (Black Butler) was pretty dark with the ending
7.) What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Uhhhh I tend towards fluff but maybe Kitchen Friends has the biggest hurt-to-comfort arc?
8.) Do you get hate on fics? Not on my fics! I'll get hate comments on my agere art sometimes, and on my Hazbin Hotel content occasionally, but that's it. Never on AO3, I don't think.
9.) Do you write smut? Not on this blog!
10.) Craziest crossover? The first fic I ever published on my main AO3 account was a Supernatural/Sherlock/RPF crossover: I was forced to make an AO3 account to post it because ff.net didn't allow actor fics. It's still up on my account, but I can't say I recommend it lol
11.) Have you ever had a fic stolen? At least once, yes!
12.) Have you ever had a fic translated? Hmmmmm I think my Sanders Sides content was translated into Russian at one point, but none of my agere content.
13.) Have you co-written a fic before? Only once, and it was on ff.net, and it was with my grade nine girlfriend.
14.) All-time favorite ship? Destiel, Valduggery, and Lawlight are my top 3 OTPs, in that order.
15.) What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? My reader and Hannibal fic!!!!! I want to finish it SO BAD but it never works when I try and work on it!!
16.) What are your writing strengths? Character development, combining dialogue and action to make a full picture of a scene, keeping dialogue mostly in-character.
17.) What are your writing weaknesses? Consistency, sentence variety, typically boring introductions and ending to my stories.
18.) Thoughts on dialogue in another language? Not really sure what this one is asking: I feel nervous writing in other languages because I'm only semi-bilingual in French, so anything else would be a google translate mess: I typically just italicize the dialogue and "translate" it into English.
19.) First fandom you wrote in? Skulduggery Pleasant: my first fic was a death/whump fic based on My Immortal by Evanescence and I wrote it on my ipod touch while I was backstage at a dance contest that I'd already performed my part in, in 2009, at the tender age of 11.
20.) Favorite fic you've written? Oh! Um, probably Heading Home Again. It's not an agere fic but it's T-rated and it's a fanfiction about fusion in the Marvel universe. It holds up when I reread it! My favourite agere fic I've written might be Something Wrong, to be honest.
If you'd like to participate, I'd like to tag some faves: @sleepy-lil-kit-kat, @paper--moons, and @mcschnuggles, but absolutely no pressure <3

I've finally learned the difference
Beetwen "tough" "though" "through" and "thought"
(without the first "H") Tough - hard, difficult
(with the first "H") Though - but, even so
(with an "R") Through - passing into it till the end
(with another "T" in the end) Thought - past of the verb "to think"
