Here's all the fiction I read this year :)
I was super busy with work and life and had to read a lot of non-fiction for work and university, which is why I read significantly less than I usually do. But honestly, I don't really mind. This way everything I did read in my free time feels a lot more memorable.
Favourites include Under the Whispering Door, Payback's a Witch, Mexican Gothic and Dark Heir. I also re-read one of my all time favorites; The Secret History, and it held up amazingly.
Hope everyone got to enjoy some good books this year 💜💜💜

Gaea got taken down in five books.
Kronos got taken down in five books.
Nero got taken down in five books.
Nyx got taken down in three chapters.
Primordial goddess of night. Sister of Gaea.
A goddess the king of the gods fears….
Taken down in three chapters….
By the power of friendship.
(I think it would have been more realistic if the ‘villain’ was of less magnitude)

part of me is so genuinely terrified that the plot of TSATS is gonna be “the gay couple goes to superhell to rescue a titan but!! turns out that titan fell in love with the friendly giant he met down there and now they’re gay in superhell with their undead pet cat/sabertooth tiger and they decide to stay so the original gay couple turns around to go home. also maybe there’s a goddess of rainbows down there somewhere, because that is an actual greek myth, and because of that idk maybe somebody gets gay wings.”

Seeing an entire episode centered around Echidna and the Chimera called to my attention just how brief the encounter in the book was. Percy meets them in mortal guise, they reveal themselves and attack, Percy is poisoned and the Gateway Arch is damaged, and Percy drops out and oh hey he survived the fall and the water healed him and he can breathe underwater moving on. It was about as long as the scene at the top of the arch was in the show.

The Uroboros Saga: The Prince Beyond The Veil- a fantasy romance that is a Beauty and the Beast retelling, with Norse Mythology inspo. Gifted by the author ✨ I'm currently 13% of it, and so far it's intriguing and compelling at the same time. Illusion of Stars- a fantasy romance that is Dramione coded (as what it's marketed). Got the e-arc from The Nerd Fam Pr ✨ 14% of it and so far, it has yet to appeal to me.

The Curse: Spiritual Grimdark Horror Graphic Ballad- 285-page Graphic Adaptation of a One-of-a-kind Esoteric Dark Fantasy Ballad is unveiling the birth of the Darkest of Legends; unraveling the origins of Dark Messiah. Got this arc on Booksirens. I will be starting this today specifically, and high hopes for this one ✨ Butcher & Blackbird- Will also be starting this dark romance/ horror/ thriller novel. This is somewhat of a rivalry between two serial k*llers falling in love and the likes. Heard so many good things about this so I'm having high hopes!

We melted into each other until the dawn slid into dusk and the sun paled into the moon and the stars, once lost, became found again.

Spin: a review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"But the bards and poets | often get it wrong, especially | when they speak of | girls and women. | So I will tell you | my version of the story | and let you decide."
Before opening this gorgeous book, I had never read a "novel-in-verse." As my first step into the world of such lyrical prose this book did not disappoint for even a moment. Instead, it caught my attention, and kept it throughout, which is a tough feat for a regular novel to do, much less one in a different style than I was expecting. (when it was described as a novel-in-verse I thought it was describing the writing style, not that it was a literal type of novel.)
I also didn't know much about Arachne's story other than Arachne links to Arachnids. I was so pleasantly surprised by so much of the way this story was told. I adored the artistically arranged lines, in shapes or in specifically set up staggering lines, adding to the rhythm and flow of the novel. The themes explored were difficult ones but were handled so delicately, with full respect towards each of them.
Rebecca Caprara truly just pulls it off. Not just the retelling or the themes, but everything about it. When she choses to make a verse rhyme, the way she splits up the verses, the pacing, the buildup, emotions, all while maintaining a unbelievable beauty strewn throughout.
Honestly if I was braver this book would likely encourage me to try my own hand at this type of writing. The haunting, lyrical prose all lend to the feeling that remains well after the last page ties up each element into the completed masterpiece that it is - quite possibly one of, if not the best greek myth retelling yet .
