#class 78th

Note
So wait Classes 77-B and 78 are in the school at the same time when the story starts?
No, I believe Class 78th comes in at the tail end of Season 1 and the start of Season 2. If I put them there right away at the start, then we wouldn't release the story in August, would we?
This was just talk about describing how Class 78th is in this Au

Blorbo check!Awnser with your blorbo and send this to your friends to ask them about their blorbo
Hmm, let's see. I've got plenty of blorbos, tbh.
Danganronpa: Most of the protags from DR2: Goodbye Despair especially Ibuki Mioda and Chiaki Nanami (shocker, ik). Just about everybody from DR1: Trigger Happy Havoc, save for a select few... and Kaede Akamatsu and Shuichi Saihara from DRV3: Killing Harmony (which I haven't played enough of to decide if there are more blorbos from that game).
The Owl House: The whole of the Hexsquad, Eda, Raine, Camila, King, Hooty, Lilith, et cetera.
Doki Doki Literature Club: All the girls!!!
Crush Crush: Also all the girls, especially Peanut!!!
A Hat in Time: Hat Kid, ofc! Also I've decided she's my daughter, as of... April 22nd, 2023 (about when I started playin' AHIT).
Total Drama: Gwen and Courtney ^_^
I could keep goin', but I don't wanna make this post too long :3

A fun idea for your consideration: Since 78's killing game was broadcast to the entire world, then that means surely recordings of it still exist all over the place. Imagine class 77 finding and watching them. Imagine 78 finding them and maybe watching out of morbid curiosity.
I have so many thoughts about this.
They would instantly be able to tell it was Mukuro dressed as Junko.
All the anger, fear and anxiety seeing Junko again and having to remind themselves she's gone.
Seeing how different the survivors are, that they're not friends at all. Byakuya is cruel, Kyoko is cold.
But somehow the hardest to witness is Makoto.
Because he looks so happy.
There's a light in his eyes that they never knew dimmed. And every death, every trial dims it little by little and it hurts.
Everyone realising why Hagakure only goes by Hiro or Hagakure... Never Yasuhiro.
Soda just being absolutely wrecked with guilt because he knows he built those executions.
Hajime thinking of Chiaki after hearing Leon's speech on talent.
The sadness in them all watching Asahina break over Sakura's death.
Sonia being excited at seeing Genocide Sho.
The horror when Kyoko finds Jin Kirigiri's bones.
The fear of Makoto getting attacked and the outrage when he's executed.
And that no one batted an eyelid at it or that he survived.
Hajime having to taking many deep breathes when Kyoko says her talent meant her survival was more important than Makoto's life.
Watching the final trial, seeing everyone's horror and knowing they all played a part in it.
Seeing Junko's death and feeling relief, it's one thing to hear she died but it's another seeing it.
The suprise that Makoto tried to save her.
The tape ending and no one knowing what to say, or what to do with what they've learned.

My opinion on improving Yasuhiro Hagakure because him surviving despite not having a major impact fucked hard and Taka should have survived, this will get long
Look. Taka should have survived: that is my opinion. Yasuhiro surviving is the epitome of that meme of a kid doing nothing in a group project getting an A.
He also feels like major wasted potential to me? He's the Ultimate Clairvoyant with a 30% success rate??
Nah. Fuck that.
Give me Yasuhiro Hagakure who goes down the Kassandra route. Give me a Clairvoyant trapped in the narrative, who knows full on well how the trials go out but does nothing but ultimately they are all fixed on a course of fate, because everything will only go in one direction, because while hope can be kept, fate cannot be changed. Give me a Yasuhiro who comes up with the mose insane "future tellings" which use metaphors and twisted ways and absolutely tell me the future. Give me everyone ignoring the Kassandra, who mourns alone, who stays out of the battle between hope and despair, give me Yasuhiro going insane trying to keep himself on the right path. Give me the Celeste-Hiro-Taka murder where Yasuhiro looses it through stress and is fraying at the seams, give me another element of magic similar to Kyoko hearing the Reaper's Footsteps.
Give me that final scene where Yasuhiro confesses, where everyone realises how utterly bullshit this system of Ultimates are, the realisation that your greatest strengths bring you agony, that these titles are meaningless.
It would be better than what we got at the end

Okay, fic idea
The 77th and 78th class switch their Ultimate Lucks.
Makoto has to deal with the 77th class’ shenanigans, while the 78th class have to deal with Nagito’s shenanigans! It’d be hilarious. And also, more friends for Makoto which is always a good thing.

Batman's Dropout Tests
The best kept secret of the Batfamily from the JL and their other associates is that Batman has given all of his children blanket permission to drop out of traditional school at any time so as they can pass the graduation test. However, before they can take the federal graduation test, they first have to pass his social competency and common colloquialisms tests.
Dick never bothered to try it. He heard 3 tests (1 of which requires a perfect score to pass - I'm thinking common colloquialisms for that one) and "said no thanks, I'll stick with class."
Jason genuinely loved school while he was Robin and never even asked about graduating early. When he resurrected, he got his GED and gained the absolute love and respect of his men before it came up. Bruce decided that counted as a pass for all 3 tests and so never mentioned it at all.
Tim took the common colloquialisms test 8 times and failed all of them before Bruce got lost in time. The very first thing he did when Dick threatened him with Arkham was steal the answers to both the social competency and common colloquialisms tests. By the time Bruce returned, Tim had both rote memorized and had already been dropped out of school for months. Bruce still made him take both tests which Tim passed with perfect scores. Needless to say, Bruce was extremely suspicious but Tim covered his tracks well enough that he couldn't prove the kid cheated.
Damian took the both tests a record number of 106 times. He failed every single one of them. Jon almost found out about the tests when he asked Damian what was wrong shortly after the 78th failure. Thankfully, Dick was nearby and swooped in in time to convince Jon that Damian had failed an English Lit test due to a cultural miscommunication instead. Bruce seriously considered putting a limit in the number of attempts his children could make at the tests after that.
Duke, like Jason, never even asked about graduating early. He didn't much care for school but he loved getting to see his friends. Duke was the only child Bruce was pretty sure could have passed both the social competency and common colloquialisms tests on the first try.
Cass never asked about early graduation. This was primarily because her situation was such that she couldn't do traditional schooling anyway, but Bruce always suspected that if he had sent her to traditional school she would have graduated early and he would have never found out until she didn't walk on the expected graduation day.
Also, while Bruce would never admit it to his children outright, it should be noted that he did not come up with these requirements. Alfred had made the original tests back when Bruce tried to quit school after his parents died. Bruce took both tests a total of 23 times before giving up and resigning himself to traditional graduation. Alfred is still smug about it.

The Misadventures of the Third Enoshima (1) | Yandere Danganronpa
Tumblr media
For the first official game, I can see you physically not being apart of it
Unfortunately, the Despair twins are all too busy preparing for their roles in the 78th class
So busy they don’t have time to chase you themselves
Much to Mukuro’s chagrin
Junko leaves it to another to pursue you’re hiding and un-brainwashed
“Nenene~Kamakura-Sen-Pai! You’ll find my precious baby bird? They’ve seemed to run off at the height of our despair!”
“Why should I? It could be boring, chasing down this...bird of yours.”
“Hmmm, it could! I never thought about it that way~! You know what I’ll just have that pig do it instead since you’re so preoccupied hanging out with the 77th class! Tata.”
He pulls out her mini photobook with various snapshots of you he so easily swiped
None of which have you posing for them
It was easy to swipe
And wordlessly he’s accepted her favor
Why?
Something about this mere picture of you feels….far from boring
So while you continue to be on the run vaguely aware of your being followed
You can only look on as the friends you once knew are forced to kill themselves in a mutual killing game
Slowly unraveling the truth surrounding their despairful entrapment
Meanwhile, you begin to try and see if there’s a way you can remind the 77th class of who they are before this
Just narrowly surviving and thwarting their grand plots of despair
In the midst of this is where those at the future foundation find their interest in you
“(Y/n)? Last name?”
“Does it really matter now? The point is I’m trying to help.”
It’s up to you whether to tell the sword-wielding Munakata or let him figure it out himself
Either way, you’re actions and adorably cute pleading face has him taking you under his wing
“Fine (Y/n)...for your safety you should take my last name earlier than planned. So that you’re past doesn’t interfere with the hope you’ll bring.”
“Thanks Kyosuke for believing in me!”
“What are you talking about (Y/n)-chi~? You did it all by yourself fighting despair on your own for soo long.”
“Chisa–”
“Yeah but don’t expect us to just leave you unattended! Knowing you you’d get yourself killed in seconds.”
“Hey!”
“Juzo don’t be mean!”
“All that being said…welcome to the Future Foundation (Y/n). Let’s cure the world of despair.”

Hajime's such an amazing protagonist, he's realistic but he isn't boring. He is the perfect combination of a "basic protagonist," and a really interesting character. The story uses the fact he's "basic," and gives it life. His story is of someone who is so insecure, depressed, and feels so inferior about being talentless that he gives up his own life just to be something he can be proud of. Just so he can be something worth remembering.
He finally grasps that confidence that he's anything at all In Danganronpa 2, it doesn't last but I think it impacts him. He doesn't NEED talent to have that confidence again, if he was truly not talented the whole time and had confidence, why not have it again? He finds his own strength, not only that but he decides he won't live in the past but rather the future and present. That he'll decide his own future, no matter what happens. In contrast to class 78th they're basically the school dropouts after all, they don't know how life will go, but they'll figure it out. They'll make their own future.
Hajime is my favorite because he's the perfect balance for a protagonist. He's his own person, but he's also truly relatable. He's "Basic" but that only adds more to his character. Out of all of the protagonists and messages the Danganronpa franchise has, Danganronpa 2 resinates with me most. It's what I need to hear the most!
I don't know I just love Hajime lmao, Hajime and Nagito DANGANRONPA 2 PEAK‼️‼️‼️

bugs me a bit when people assume Ivan is some kind of genius or somehow naturally talented
he's really not at all. he just works ridiculously hard I mean we've seen his schedule what is this
Tumblr media
literally anyone who put in this amount of work would end up getting good grades... if they didn't have a complete breakdown first guess you can consider that his "talent" can't break if you're already broken
Sua does actually seem like a natural genius though, she's tied with Ivan despite not doing... all that well she basically says as much
Tumblr media
and she worked as a model (among other things) while attending Anakt Garden, so she managed being top of the class while also already having her career Ivan didn't do any of that, he only got popular after round 3 (idk what these rankings are out of, but if he's only 78th when Till was 5th...) despite being a top student I suppose Ivan didn't actually stand out much at first?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
interesting how out of all of them, Ivan seems the least suited to singing on stage Sua's clearly talented, Till is a musical prodigy, and Mizi genuinely loves singing Luka is literally made for it, and Hyuna also loves singing and seems to have this natural stage presence
but all Ivan's good at is following orders

Makoto's survivor's guilt did not first emerge after Sayaka's death or Leon's trial. It emerged way, way before. Before the Killing Game even started.
It first emerged when the headmaster put the 78th class under lockdown.
Imagine how much of a distressing time it was. You're staying safe behind the walls of Hope's Peak Academy, provided for your every need by the headmaster, who has promised to protect you with all his life, while your loved ones outside are to be left at the mercy of an extremely chaotic world.
And you couldn't even have the chance to bring them along with you, to keep them close to you behind these safe walls.
Whenever Makoto eats fresh and delicious food in the dining hall, he feels guilty. What if his family's starving and couldn't shop at the nearest groceries at the risk of being killed?
Whenever Makoto lays on his comfortable bed, he feels guilty. What if his house gets demolished at night while his family's still inside, sleeping?
Whenever Makoto contacts his family, he feels guilty. He often ends up crying and apologizes constantly for 'abandoning' them. His family tries assuring him there isn't anything more that can be done and 'it's just the way things are'. They encourage him to stay safe and they'll try the same.
Also, it doesn't help his mental state that the headmaster often reminds the students that they're the 'final hope' that are destined to 'serve the foundation for a new era'. He tells them it's necessary to isolate them, the 'superiour youth', from the 'corrupted world'.
Then Makoto starts wondering. 'Final hope', 'superior youth' - do these titles even apply to an average, ordinary person like him? And what about his loved ones who are also average, ordinary people like him? Why are they cast aside to the corrupted world? Do their lives matter less than the Ultimates' lives? Do their lives matter less than his now just because he happened to win the lottery and got into Hope's Peak?
Also, remember this interview?
Tumblr media
When the headmaster says that he might have to stay in the school forever, and if he accepts that.
Do you remember his response?
A half-hearted "...Yes".
And also, "Well, I mean... we don't have much of a choice, do we?"
It's like he has given up. He holds almost no hope that he would ever reunite with his family. He holds almost no hope of ever returning to a world where things have been better.
He has given up at this moment!
And this- this is where it all began!
This is the onset of Makoto's survivor's guilt.

i think the most heartbreaking part of danganronpa, the more years pass and the longer i analyze it, is the revelation that junko loved her classmates. it's subtle, more subtle than a lot of writing in the series, and can easily be overlooked thanks to the narrative seeming to be allergic to showing junko interacting with her own cohort for some godforsaken reason, but it IS there.
we all know by now that the stronger junko feels about someone (positively) the more intimate she becomes in personally crafting despair for them to fall into. and while it would be easy for me to point to DR:S where she straight up admits that (in a non-despair timeline) she's attached to her classmates and that hope gives her despair, i'll instead dabble in that more subtle writing.
now i've spent far too many words far too many years ago talking about how much i Do Not Like DR3 (the anime) and especially do not like the despair video nonsense...but taking the above into account, it almost begins to make sense (almost). junko loves her classmates. adores them. i don't think it's coincidence that just their class were spared the initial slaughter, and i think that junko deciding to personally involve herself in their killing game with her own life on thebline as collateral shows that love.
she wanted her classmates to be personally cradled by her despair. televising their downfall in particular, kidnapping their loved ones - even killing off mukuro way early (and therefore "junko" as an entity in their minds) - all while isolating herself in the control room, trapped along with them...it's a commitment she doesn't show to anyone else except matsuda, her childhood love. the 77th class are throwaways - she involves herself with them only as much as needed to get what she needed before tossing them a brainwashing video and bouncing. they are barely anything to her, useful pawns at best and nothing more.
but her own class? she loves them. in UTDP and DR:S, her classmates are able to clock when her personality shifts even the slightest. she mildly entertains helping them, listening to their problems, giving them advice. she says sakura relying on her makes her feel happy - so happy it brings her despair. their happiness together is /genuine/, and it's why she wants to give them such a horrible, personal, awful gift.
idk, im just obsessed with these relationships that go so unsaid and are paid so little attention to. and i get some of it is to probably keep the mystique surrounding junko, but...sighs. the 78th class needs a little more love from the writers and they're never going to get it lmao, i just wish we saw more of the entire class and their relationship to junko.

Have you ever done RoD class 78 AND class 77 together before I genuinely cannot remember? I know you have a story about RoD class 78 on AO3 but it's not both classes together. Anyways like your previous idea everyone except Makoto is in despair and they keep him around because he is simultaneously their hope amd despair. Despair because he has to watch his friends do things they would have never done, and hope because some of them are waiting for him to join them.
How would the RoD of class 77 view their situation and what would their dynamic be now that they're both fighting for Junko's affection?
This is really cool!!
The envy over class 78 perpetually having more of Junko's attention and favor than them would be such great despair for the 77th class.
Mondo's "every biker gang in Japan" and Fuyuhiko's, ya know, yakuza, are constantly fighting over turf, because now there's factions within the Ultimate Despair. This lawlessness benefits their side, of course. When it doesn't benefit them to be at odds, they're allies. But they all want to be the ones to earn Junko's approval, and her classmates know her better and she cares about them more. Officially, though, the 77th class has "double seniority", because they're upperclassmen and they were initiated as despair first.
Basically, by objective measures of rank and usefulness, the 77th class should be the favorites; they have a princess controlling kingdoms on Junko's behalf, for despair's sake! They worship her way more than her class does. But she simply doesn't like them as much, and that hurts.
Okay, now Makoto!
He is hanging on to his morals, but naturally his mental health is in shambles. Basically, it's the status quo of Despair's Throbbing Heart, for him; he is keeping layers of denial and dissociation between himself and the horrors and surfacing from that state when there's someone he can save or influence.
The arrangement he's in would be different, in this AU.
The 77th class like to make fun of the 78th class for the fact that their luckster is still on "that good guy BS". They even point to Nagito proudly, like, "Look at our luckster! He set a convenience store on fire yesterday. What's your guy been doing?"
Nagito loves this. His class has never been so supportive and affectionate toward him.
The 78th class's response to this is largely defensive. Like, "Stop bullying Makoto! He's just a late bloomer!" Meanwhile, they all do their best to get him into despair. (Hifumi is the most creative about it.) At first, he meets every attempt with yelling protestations and passionate insistence that they're not like this! He knows them, and they're not like this! After they've done it enough, he loses the energy for such displays, but that doesn't mean he's given up. Every time they do a horrible thing in front of him and he shuts down emotionally, they wait eagerly for him to start laughing or pawing curiously at the ashes or something to indicate he's enjoying it, but he just shuts down for a while and, when his mind considers it safe to resurface, changes the subject.
He still argues and protests what they're doing, but now that he's no longer shocked every time, he can ration his energy so that he's subtle when he needs to be subtle and insistent when he needs to be insistent.
Junko lowkey loves it. When she visits her friends, there will be at least one time where she beckons Makoto over to sit with her and just kind of guides his head to rest on her...chest. Strokes his hair with her long nails and calls him a freak of nature and tells him he disgusts her. Sayaka's cuddled up against his other side, sometimes, but sometimes Junko takes care to get him alone. Quietly, in an alternatingly sweet, cruel, and emotionless tone, she tries to wear him down by talking at length about the futility of his resistance and how much happier he and everyone will be if he just gives in to despair.
He's sometimes trembling with fury while she does this, and sometimes he's just staring into space. Either way, he's managing his energy. He can't fight what she's doing to others if he wastes energy defending himself. And she knows it.
He seems not to be listening, but he saves her words in his mind. Sometimes they're useful, to get his friends to spare people based on little loopholes or slants in what Junko said.
The 77th class repeatedly offers to borrow Makoto for a weekend, claiming they can get him to despair, where his own class has failed. The 78th class tries to refuse, but Junko tells them to let the senpais try. So, sometimes Makoto visits them.
They think he's adorable and weird.
He gravitates toward the ones who do the least horrible stuff in front of him (Ibuki doesn't seem to personally kill anyone.) and the ones who seem the most capable of uncomplicated affection (Akane treats him like a younger sibling, and there doesn't seem to be any edge of weird, fond cruelty to it.).
Nagito and Izuru are fascinated with him.
Both the hope and despair in Nagito are delighted by Makoto. Makoto causes Nagito's class to view him favorably, to take pride in him. But also, Makoto has shown himself to be the best of them, somehow. There is a light within him that cannot be extinguished. It's a precious gift that he simultaneously wants to see destroyed and protected. Literally, any direction that Makoto goes will make Nagito happy, either from the perverse glee of seeing someone so amazing finally falling to despair, or the wholesome glee of seeing him continue to soar above the filth that has claimed everyone else. Either way, he is transfixed. After they've spent more time together, he'll probably start to care about personally protecting the good in Makoto, but at first he's just watching the fireworks with his hands behind his back.
Izuru is likewise fascinated by the unexpected fortitude. Since Makoto is subject to more avenues of attack to his morale, in this AU, than he is in Despair's Throbbing Heart, he's less overtly friendly in this AU than in that fic. He's kind, but he's more careful about who he opens himself up to, meaning the side of himself that he shares with Izuru is less an immediate friendliness than a quiet kindness. Still, Izuru is intrigued by it, and a part of him he doesn't consciously recognize is starved for kindness.
Both Nagito and Izuru are pretty overt about these feelings.
Sometimes Makoto wakes up to see a shadowy figure standing over his bed. "Kamukura?" he guesses from the long hair.
"I was walking past your door, and I heard you having a nightmare. I was curious, so I came to watch."
"...Okay." Makoto rolls over and goes back to sleep.
When Junko has her weird cuddle sessions with Makoto, Nagito will post up to watch, like it is a critically-acclaimed one-act play.
Both of them are constantly commenting on Makoto's behavior out loud in front of him, like they're the Twitch chat of his life.
Occasionally, someone like Akane or Taka will ask Makoto if those guys are bothering him, but he always says no.
(They don't know enough about Izuru to know that there wouldn't be much they could do about it if he was.)
