eating disorder harm reduction
no one ever compiled this so that it what we are doing today. for people with eds and people whose loved ones do. please note: i’m not a doctor. this is a compilation of things from books and ed resource sites.
for people whose loved ones have an eating disorder:
try to make sure they know these things.
try not to force them to eat, they might feel uncomfortable eating in front of people. also, risk of refeeding syndrome.
if their life is in danger and you are seeking help for them, consult the person beforehand to make sure they will be safe and give them a heads-up so that they aren’t startled (especially if they’re neurodivergent! giving them notice will aid control!)
offer them ways of controlling things aside from food - practice consent, include them in conversations, don’t talk about them behind their back, compliment their makeup or hair.
be patient. the person may be irritable from lack of sleep, feelings of depression, worthlessness, etc., or malnutrition.
keep in mind that you can’t tell if someone has an eating disorder by looking at them. people of all weights do - only 17% of anorexics are underweight - and also, men and non binary people can also have eds.
general:
drink lots of water, especially if you’re drinking lots of caffeine.
drink some electrolytes at least once a week - gatorade, electrolyte tablets, coconut water, doesn’t matter, just get it into your system.
if you are getting dizzy or flushed and can feel your heart beating, quick carbs will raise your blood sugar - sweets, bread, fruit, juice, non diet soda, whatever. keep snacks around pls.
your brain uses 400-500 calories daily. eat more than this.
take your supplements!
you still need protein, have an egg or something.
don’t take adderal or insulin unless you are actually diabetic or neurodivergent, because you are raising the price by buying them and denying access to those who need it.
throw a towel over the mirror. it’s not worth it if it’ll cause you anxiety.
try to limit disordered behaviours like body checking, purging, and weigh ins.
practice good dental hygiene.
put your scale somewhere where you have to actively look for it to weigh yourself.
avoid social media and for your sake don’t go on pro ed tiktok or tumblr or twitter or insta.
get a buddy who also struggles with the same thing if possible to support each other.
get regular medical check ups (if you can afford it)
practice things within your control - makeup, hair, clothing, etc.
push your rules - eat 5 minutes before your time, or 50 calories over your limit.
for people with restrictive disorders (e.g. anorexia):
do weight and resistance training at least twice a week to prevent musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoporosis.
don’t drink on an empty stomach.
try to put gaps between fasting periods.
don’t fast for more than 72 hours.
wear lots of layers to keep warm.
eat an extra 100-200 calories on your period if you menstruate.
have a metabolism day.
take care of your hair.
as horrifying as this is to many people, please go to the hospital if you’re experiencing heart problems or if you’re passing out for more than 30 seconds.
for people with purging disorders (e.g. bulimia):
if you would like to purge, wait 15 minutes first.
after purging: drink lots of water - the emptiness you feel is dehydration. don’t brush your teeth but rinse your mouth out, preferably with an alkaline mouthwash or baking soda mixed into water. do something you want to do, like reading a book or watching a show. don’t smoke. don’t have anything acidic. eat a banana or some chocolate or a rice cake to keep your blood sugar levels in check.
if you vomit blood or your vomit looks like coffee grounds, this is a sign of internal bleeding. you could be drowning in your own blood from a hole in your esophagus, essentially. go to the hospital or call 911/999/the emergency number in your area.

(i am going to sound INSANE. i will remind u guys that i take aripiprazole and all the bunch other, im okay!)
i was complaining to ven that it's been a while since i dream about jonghyun and the next day i saw the moon in such a peculiar brightness and color (show off). the moon here usually looks pale yellow, but yesterday it was cold white and very very bright. call me insane but i will take it as a reassurement.
today was the same, i was biking around listening to playlist i made for AJ and snooping milk prices in a supermarket when i found oronacimin C there. i instantly remember the silly advertisement jjong recorded long ago where he looked very very happy. the drink is not commonly found here (local competitors won in both taste and price) and i will be lying if i say i didnt hold on to it like its my newborn baby.
i decided that i will share the vitamin drink with jjong today. i biked a long time looking for somewhere pretty to sit down and drink. i biked past rivers and irrigation channels and vast paddy fields and coconut orchards. i didnt even realize how far i have cycled, far beyond my usual meters, my eyes were scouting for pretty places and lost in reverie at the same time.
i found a big and pretty tree on the other side of a big irrigation channel, green and inviting. beyond it were paddy fields as far as eyes can see and little grey hills beyond. i'm lucky that the bridge over the channel was cemented, so i can cross it safely. i biked on the small cemented path and then to a tiny dirt path. in the intersection, i saw some children trying to climb up and reach fruits of a keres tree. not far from that, some boys are splashing in a river and somersaulting, the sound of water and wind was musical, almost singing alongside my spotify playlist. it felt right. in that exact moment, the song ended and another song began. it was lonely by jjong. i'm happy hearing his voice and that he decided to meet me here. it was the right place, i was certain. so i sat down on the grass and get my drink from my satchel. poured some to the soil in front of me and say a little prayer for jonghyun, that he is happy, that all his good deeds are cherished and all his faults forgiven. i biked home with an uplifted heart. i have no doubt that wherever he is, he is happy and at peace. i am certain that he is somewhere better than here. if i want to meet him someday, i will have to do many good deeds. i do wish to meet him someday. not too soon i hope though, i have to live my life first. i hadnt even do half the good things he had done in life. i pray that i succeed.

had the most captivating dessert lunch today. it was the most flaky crispy crunchy chewy chocolately cherry caramel blueberry raspberry açai banana honey strawberry hazelnut kiwi apple walnut almond sweet peach fudgey cranberry pineapple orange coconut mango lemon vanilla metallic thorny hairy sticky bitter frozen candy-coated sandy volcanic bloody salty oppressive heavy rich creamy sunny herculean geometric dog I had ever eaten, and it howled/screamed as you ate it. I went into immediate diabetic shock and woke up as the littlest tiniest bunny in a new and special Rabbit World and i went to do whimsical little things..... tonight is the festival of Happy, and I will play my whimsical flute with the other bunnies. are you okay with this... ? im the littlest pinkest one but I think I'll do a good job.......... I highly recommend the lunch dessert shop it was called Granny Fucker's Ice Cream N Snacks

I keep hearing how good chia seeds are!
here’s a chia seed pudding recipe!
when it comes to calories it really depends on brands ect. so depending on what you buy it WILL be different
1. Chia seeds (1/4 cup): Approximately
180 calories
2. Milk or plant milk (3/4 cup):
Approximately 60-90 calories (depending on the type of milk, e.g., whole milk vs. almond milk)
3. Honey or maple syrup (2 TBSP) :
Approximately 20 - 120 calories
(yes ik a huge cal difference but it’s bc of no sugar ones as-well! )
4. Vanilla extract (optional, 2 tsp):
Approximately 12 calories
5. Greek yogurt or thick coconut yogurt (1 cup) Approximately 100-150 calories (depending on the type of yogurt)
you also don’t need to have it as a pudding!! you can have just some water and lemon! but make sure to soak the chia seeds in water for at least 4 - 7 hours, dry chia seeds can and will clog your stomach!

One of the great things about living near the ocean was access to fresh fish. You could finally eat all the fish you wanted (within reason of course. And the B12 in some seafood was apparently good for diabetics so double win.) For an added bonus you found a large flat rock you could wade out to safely and practically sit in the ocean while you ate.
You worked remotely and could do this for dinner sometimes. Just sitting on the rock eating whatever fish or other dinner you'd bought. You were so busy scrolling your phone that you almost didn't notice someone trying to steal your coconut shrimp until you noticed a skeleton hand out of the corner of your eyes.
"Hey!"
The skeleton froze, hand in midair. You pulled your shrimp towards yourself more. "Mine."
They made another grab for the shrimp, ignoring you. Black tear stains trailed down their face while you tried to wrack your brain for what magic mutation caused that and continued to try to keep your shrimp away from the skeleton. You didn't know why they stayed mostly in the water, at least until you noticed a tail swishing in the water under them.
Must be one of those "mermaids" with those expensive silicone tails you saw on social media sometimes. Probably a *really* expensive one with how natural it looked.
Eventually you relented and shared your shrimp with him. He took off once he was done, but deeper into the ocean and not towards the beach.
Huh. What a strange person. You wondered if you'd see him again

Saturday story time..... Haha, hey, if you choose to read my rambling posts, that's all on you 😋😂
So......diabetes fail last night. It's been at least a few days, lol, right?
I think I misjudged the carb content of the coconut "porridge" bowl I had as my last meal.
But not enough to have such a serious effect!
It was creeping higher and higher over quite a good few hours, despite several correction doses throughout that time. Then I thought it must be a faulty pump. But it did eventually start going down VERY slowly.
It was still much higher than it should be by the time I went to bed.
Then, just to add a few more laughs, I ended up with a crashing low a couple of hours into the night. So I went from 15.5 to 3.0 for no discernable reason.
Oh, the fun of type one diabetes 😂.
Anyway, even after all that nonsense, I got myself up and out for a lovely hour of fresh air, warm natural light and the medicine of movement with an hour of walking.
Only a short fast, broken with my protein decaff during that walk.
Then time for nuts and collagen coffee back at home by the big window 😊.
Oh, and yes, I've had all my hair cut off!
Got five weeks in the motorhome coming up from Monday. It's not easy washing long hair in that thing, lol. Especially over such a long period of time!
Saturday will go as it goes. No big plans. If I feel like a workout. I'll do one. If not, I won't.
After my breakfast settled, I DID feel like one, so it was medium level lower body training FTW.
Felt good. Another workout added to my "Fiton Favourites".
And then back outside for more lovely fresh air and sunlight. Amd yes, more coffee 😂.
My first was decaff, my second was a strong mixture of both decaff filter and caffeinated instant. That third was all instant, again a mixture, but not as strong.
Blood sugar nonsense like that can seriously drain you the following day. Especially such a big deviation from the high to the very low.
So, as I always advocate to others, and try to follow myself, today was all about listening to my body. The whole "take it as it comes" principle.
That's all from me today.
It's only 1pm, so that step count will be a whole lot higher by the end of the day!
We're out of here on Monday morning. A whole 5 weeks away. Staying in the motorhome.
One week still in England, then four weeks touring France.
There is a lot of work involved preparing for that.
Physical AND mental work!
It's a very long time to be away from home. It's certainly a long time to live in a small metal box on wheels, lol.
My daily routine will be very different. I have to accept and acknowledge that my usual way of life is on hold.
Hey, wouldn't it be ironic if I have a full month with no fasting, less exercise, less focus on nutrition, etc., and all my health worries go away? 😂😂. Hey, I guess I can justify this long break as an experiment to see just what DOES happen!
