Nossa República é um fracasso? - Por Harry Pratt Judson (1895) [tradução livre]
Nossa República é um fracasso? – Por Harry Pratt Judson (1895) [tradução livre]
Tradução Livre | Eder Capobianco Publicado originalmente no The American Journal of Sociology, Volume 1, Número 1, em julho de 1895. Um cavalheiro proeminentemente conectado com o serviço diplomático de uma nação européia, disse para mim poucos anos atrás: “Você deve se lembrar que sua república ainda é apenas um experimento. Um século não é nada na história de uma nação. E ainda está para ser…

You have to take care of your own heart. You were not meant to carry the pain of the entire world. Do what you can for others, because you owe it to them, but be realistic with what you can achieve. If you’re already going to protests, donating money, working for liberation, holding power to account, taking care of the worst affected - then breathe. Take a step back and stop doomscrolling or endlessly refreshing your news app. Go for a walk in the woods. Eat your favourite chocolate. Watch a film with a loved one. Sleep. I promise you all the agony and cruelty and suffering will still be there when you get back. But maybe you’ll have a little more strength to fight them if you’ve remembered to keep tending the fires of joy inside you. You save no-one by letting them go out.

Landlord bootlickers think landlords are important to the rental market because when they leave, the properties go off the rental market, as if the properties cease to exist, rather than being shifted to the sellers market and sold. This logic exists in a vacuum. The vacuum of pro landlord brain rot. In reality, landlords have taken property from the private sellers market, which otherwise would have been bought by people to live in, such as couples or familes etc, but instead have become part of an investment portfolio. This is where the propaganda begins. Landlord stans will claim that the landlord putting the property up for rent to be rented by, the family or couple or person who got outbidded on the private market by the landlord, is a good thing because it is providing a market. They will never acknowledge that the property has been horded, stolen right out from under the people who want to buy it to live in. Instead you get this cognitive dissoance about how the landlords are providing a service and we should all be grateful, and to never call out landlords on being scum of the earth when they pull shit such as putting a bed up on the market for rent, in a shared room, in a shared house.
They will never admit that by forcing a landlord to sell up, that it will be a net benefit to the rental market by reducing demand. That's one less family/couple/person looking for a place to rent and will be able to buy. That's a good thing, especially during this housing crises. There are too many people on the private rental market because they have no choice. They need a place to live, and the private rental market really isn't sutiable and the options are slim already. So this pro landlord propaganda rubs me the wrong way. Why should we bend over backwards to cater to them? Their apologists act like when a landlord enters the rental market that the property they are offering just spontaneously pop into existence! And extend that thinking to when landlords sell up, that the property ceases to exist. It's magical thinking, but I don't put that past much people in this country to be perfectly honest.

According to World Health Organization (WHO) officials, the diseases include meningitis, jaundice, impetigo, chickenpox and upper respiratory infections.
Dr. Darien Sutton spoke on the cases of jaundice and Hepatitis A in the last week. With his words in mind many in the comments started to point out the appearance of several journalists in Gaza and how drastically their appearances have changed since Oct 7th. It's likely many of them have jaundice. He speaks about the many cases of diarrhoea sweeping through Gaza as well which the above article also speaks about.
Diarrhoea is so deadly for young children especially and they are suffering the most from it with the elderly not far behind. Replacing fluids is essential for combating diarrhoea but the people of Gaza don't have access to drinkable water. Food and nutrition is also something the body needs to fight off illness which is another thing they don't have in abundance or at all. So many things are happening at once and as the WHO and other organisations warn, these diseases plus thirst and starvation could end up killing more Palestinians than the airstrikes.
Doctors Without Borders is one organisation you can donate to (not just for Gaza) or repost and share the link if you're unable.
The numbers in all categories are staggering and the crises unprecedented given the short amount of time that has passed. There are thousands of aid trucks sitting idle on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border that need to get in and the UN is set to vote on this today, December 21st, if there are no further delays.
The US and Israel don't want to concede to another ceasefire but logically the aid can't get to where it needs to go effectively without one. Keep calling for it LOUDLY.
As granny would say, pressure buss (bursts) pipe. Free Palestine 🇵🇸

guess who's back in their compassion fatigue for library patrons era!!!
#HELLO IT'S ME SIGMUND FRAUD!#i've had one other Episode like this since being in libraries and it's so exhausting#and it makes me hate myself! i suddenly can't DEAL when interacting w/people who have mental illnesses that manifest in this that or the#or the other way. i stop caring about patrons' sob stories or hard days or legitimate crises or whatever else#i'm just angry all the goddamn time about being a brick wall for others' rage and sadness and issues when i'm a fucking book person who also#who also helps with technology. i cant handle my own fucking mental illnesses on any given day sometimes and absorbing others' hardships#when i'm not trained not equipped not PAID ENOUGH and having my own spirals and episodes...it is SO MUVH#i feel evil and heartless when i suddenly stop caring and am actively angry at patrons#this isn't even a carer type of work that i do!#and yet compassion fatigue in librarians is apparently super common. we're like retail workers minus patrons spending money at our#at our establishments. people are extra mean because of the tax dollars shit and the whole 'fulfilling gaps in social services' shit#losing my compassion for others a second time os fucking terrible. i don't want to he so angry and hateful. i don't wamt to be so checked#so checked out of others' suffering if the others are in front of me. it feels gross#and as ashamed as i am to say it? it weighs on me and makes me feel WORSE and so SELFISH#ann with an ie#and i am still tuned into global issues and care and am horrified#but things and people in front of me just...cease to register

The Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland today tried to push the narrative in government that the homeless problem here in ireland is due to poor people rejecting a social housing offer. No nuance. No pertinent information, such as the social housing list leaving you waiting for years and a lot changes in a year, let alone multple years. It was a dogwhistle to the cranks in the country who like to punch down and blame the victim, rather than questioning the government parties, who have been in consecutive governments for decades now,  as to why they have dragged their heels on the issue of building new and more social housing.

off the back of that post, actually, i mentioned the 'de-industrialising north' and it has suddenly occurred to me, well, did it? in this verse? it could have; lucy et al are sent to clear out a long abandoned mill so it can be demolished, and her (thus, presumably) former mill town certainly seems worse for wear but i mean. there was no technological revolution in the world of the problem. and society suddenly had an unprecedented demand for materials like salt, silver, iron and steel. these are things that you need to mine for, and that require a lot of industry if you're gonna use them as frequently as we see in the show. so...maybe? not? actually?
