I talk about Daniel more but Hurley is The Best Forever Funniest character: Sawyer consistently makes me laugh Best-looking character: Desmond, Ana Lucia, Charlotte and Charlie can all Fuck Me Up especially 3 favourite ships: Daniel/Charlotte, Daniel/Charlotte/Miles, Kate/Claire Least favourite character: Of the mains? But like, I've been rewatching and in season 1, he's Pretty Okay Actually, it's just season 2 where i'm just kinda checked out with him Least favourite ship: Charlie/Liam & Richard/Alex, can't pick. I will eat you alive if you fuck with this shit near me Reason why I watch it: It's a fucking masterpiece, I love the characters, the score Fucks, it inspires me as a writer and also I'm bi Why I started watching it: Because I got a crush on Dominic Monaghan and I kept seeing pics/gifs of him in this show being really cute and frequently holding a baby. Can’t believe it took me this long to realize it but Eddie Muson really is the “Stranger Things” version of Charlie Pace from LOST!!! :D LOST is still one of my all-time favorite shows and I know I’ve seen it’s been an influence for the Duffers for “Stranger Things” not only because of having a large ensemble cast but it being sci-fi. But it dawned on my today how similar one of my favorite characters on there Charlie is to Eddie. Major spoiler warning here for LOST but I think it helps as it makes me even more convinced they’ll find a way to have Eddie in the final season somehow as the exact same thing happened with Charlie.

So Charlie was guitarist/bassist/musician from the band Driveshaft that was a one-hit wonder and he was one of the main characters on the show played by Dominic Monaghan (from “The Lord of the Rings” movies). He quickly became a fan favorite not only for just how loveable and funny he was but his storyline too about being a recovering drug addict while also finding friendships with Hurley (who Dustin has long since been compared to) and Jack (who also my other favorite guy on this show and shared the Steve character type along with Sawyer), but the big part too was his love story with Claire. Claire was a young pregnant girl whose boyfriend had left her and she became a single mom on the island. Her and Charlie surprisingly formed a connection as he helped her while she was feeling down and pretended to get one of her favorite foods peanut butter and made her smile again. The scene where he caved and read her diary and found out she liked him back was so cute. They ended up falling in love and he became step-dad to her baby Aaron (plus they found out Claire was Jack’s sister so really they all became family). Looking back and how I shipped them it is similar to how I felt seeing Eddie with Chrissy.

Then season 4 came about and Charlie got a dire warning from Desmond who had a vision that Charlie was going to die. They spent the rest of the season trying to prevent it but it turned out Charlie had to die to save everyone else. They even included a flashback of a time where he saved a woman from a mugging and she called him a hero which it turned out was how he wanted die and it happened. It was a devastating death and I feel Eddie’s death would’ve worked better if he had been on the show longer like how Charlie was for the full 4 seasons. It’s also why I actually thought it was Steve getting killed off.

But that was not the end of Charlie on the show. Dominic and the writers even did what I’m seeing Joseph and the Duffers say that he wasn’t going to come back only for Charlie to show up as a ghost that only Hurley could talk to and see in season 5. LOL Then season 6 happened, which was the final season, and they brought back so many of the cast who had died because they launched a new storyline that there was an AU/afterlife where the plane never crashed but everyone found each other again. Charlie got to reunite with them all and that scene of Claire going to his concert with Jack, and her and Charlie locking eyes and realizing they found each other again was amazing.

There’s already theories that Eddie might not have died since he was in the Upside Down and things work differently there, or that time travel and alternate timelines could come into play so it’s very possible Eddie could be back especially since season 5 will be the last. I would love too if they found a way to bring back Chrissy too as well as so many of the other “Stranger Things” cast that were killed off as so many shows do this.

Episode 9: The Tide of Bone

Zombie invasion! Bar the doors and fortify the mall, because all they wanna do is eat your brains.

The Good

Right off the bat, I loved the extra story we got for the Briarwoods. This is something Matt talked about at the wrap up, but we didn't get to see in the Campaign.

Plus, this justifies Delilah not letting her husband help with the fight in Whitestone, which could've turned the tides. She's too desperate to hold on to him. So much so, that it could've ultimately cost them their victory.

And not only does this flashback establish character and motivation for the couple, but also.....as bad as the Briarwoods are, the thing they serve has the potential to be so, so much worse. That scene with Delilah drawing her own blood is honestly still hard to watch.

Hey, I never noticed that poor family wriggling on the tree in that wide shot. Ew.

The fights were fun. The jokes weren't bad. Seeing Bad News used in to take down a giant was damn good. Seeing Kiki flex with some truly impressive magic was another hell yes moment, and good set up for the Sunbeam spell later.

Nice use of Percy's full name. I'd honestly started to wonder if they were going to leave that on the cutting room floor, but they picked a very good moment to use it.

I liked how they handled Vax and Keyleth here. While you get why Vax is doing it (he's liked her for a while and he doesn't want to die without her knowing it) you also get why Keyleth reacts the way she does (she does not need the distraction when they're fighting a hoard of zombies). It's surprisingly cute. And leaves the door open for further romantic development down the road.

Of course the lady of the episode is one Ms. Pike Trickfoot, swooping in at the last second to take out a shit ton of zombies, mirroring what went down in the campaign. It was such a cool moment in the original (especially since this was the first time Ashley could be back in a while) and they did it justice. Thank your Clerics, everybody! Her giving the common folk of the town some holy weapons was a nice touch.

I also just have to point out Vax repeatedly exclaiming "Ew!" or "Gross!" over the course of the episode because....mood.

The Bad

This...is another episode where the pacing does it no favors. There are multiple points in the episode where staying attached at the hip to our protagonists was unneeded and actually hurt the story.

For instance, while they were catching their breath in the safe house, we could've cut to outside. Where a bigger and bigger group of undead was accumulating out there. Then they attack. This breeds suspense and "The zombies are coming, get out of there!" type reactions. Which are always fun.

Meanwhile, the action doesn't grow; just stays constant throughout. That might sound like something you want. But you don't.

What you want is for the action to ebb, flow, and build. You want slower, safer moments that give a false sense of hope. You want the characters to think they're safe while the audience is shown that they absolutely are not. But you want every subsequent lull to be shorter, every new attack to be longer or more brutal. You want a feeling of escalation. And since we don't have that, Pike's entrance doesn't feel like the relief it should. It just feels like more action. It's great, but not as great as it could and should be.

As for Archie....not a fan of fridging. It just feels cheap. I know both Dominic Monaghan and Rory Mccan were not going to be sticking around. But they could've done something more interesting with Archie's exit.

Thinking about it now, I actually wouldn't have minded mixing Father Reynal with this version of Archie. Have him be a posthumous character, (which justifies Dominic not sticking around) but let VM find his notes. They could be read in Archie's voice and include flashbacks to resistance efforts he was up to before he died. Have the last note be specifically addressed to Percy, telling him not to give up, expressing complete faith that he was still alive and would eventually come back to oppose the Briarwoods. And that's what inspires Percy to use his full name and lead the rest of the town into battle.

Or, you know, something else. Not saying that's the best thing that could've happened, but it was another option.

TLOVM Ep 9 Twitch Watch Party Summary

- Tried to make that guy with the Briarwoods look like Brian Foster

- Delilah wanted to save Sylas cause she didn't want to enter the dating pool again

- Arthur hand painted the skull book animation frame by frame!

- Long hair Sylas is SO hot, and she gives him a haircut every morning (cause vampire? I guess?)

- Joaquim Dos Santos did some work on TLOVM as a pat on the shoulder for Arthur and some other animators for working under him in Voltron

- Sam: "Hey it's my daughter!" at the sun tree dead Pike kid (omg...)

- Character design team made a ton of zombie designs so you're not looking at the same ones and there's some 3D ones in the back too

- Liam's line delivery is always SO good (at Vax's "Gross!")

- We went through many iterations of what Scanlan's bite looks like and it's very gross and it gets worse as it goes

- The growling giants are Liam!

- Sam immersed himself with an accent coach for 6 weeks for Scanlan's 'french' accent (he's joking)

- We had a scene cut for time constraints that was explaining why no one could leave Whitestone (because of the demon dogs)

- Arthur's wife screamed watching Archie die haha :(

- You can really see the love from everybody in every frame, the whole crew really loves working on this

Q: Tell us about the art teams' blood, sweat and tears with the zombie apocalypse?

A: All the art teams did a really good job, everyone came together to make it look that good. There was a lot that went in there to make it feel organic and real, like staggered gait, and different looks and personalities.

Q: How did the scene change than from the game?

A: We made it extra since it's animated, you know, she came out of the sky and gave everyone the equivalent of Holy Weapon

Q: Giant designs are great, let's talk about them.

A: Everything was really well done, and how they look refers to who they were before they died like: the muscle and sinew under the skin, different levels of decay, barrel as a pauldron, and the different clothes and beards

Q: Vax finally tells Keyleth how he feels, how was it distilling that moment for the animated series?

A: Super wise, but charisma is her dump stat. When it happened in the game Marisha asked Laura: "What?? How long has this been going on?" Laura: "For like fucking 40 episodes." Liam had been doing all these little things for ages like 'Vax sits next to Keyleth' and I was just like "Ok cool!" (Travis: On the show when this happened, we all escaped into our shirts like 'WHAT IS HAPPENING?') Liam trailblazed character romance in our games (Ashley: I didn't know you could do that!) It was important to not rush it here, because in the original game they had like 40 episodes of lead up and a lot of time for the romance to blossom realistically, but here there's less time so you have to be intentional about it. But I (Marisha) like how we subverted the romance trope with Keyleth, she wasn't like "OH my prince!" she's more like "Not now! this is NOT appropriate!" (lol cute)

Q: Speaking of romances: Pike and Scanlan, what the fuck?

A: Sam: I think we're destined to be together, Ashley: but it's gonna take Pike some time to make her way (all: makin' my way) they're long game so it takes a while. Sam: Scanlan has always thought he's a skilled romanticist but he actually cares about Pike but he doesn't know what to do about that, it's easy to hook up with someone but it's hard to get someone to care about you

Q: Arthur, any artists or references that influenced the show?

A: Oh crap, maybe 3 years ago. But I took the last show I worked on with me, including artists and background designers (from Voltron: Legendary Defender) and we had fun with it

Q: Favorite game to show moment so far?

Travis: Dark spirits coming after VM, desmond wasn't there but it was great to lock in on those character beats and different faces of their personalities - big action moment though? Pike's return

Marisha: The sun tree was like "What the fuck is Matt thinking? Holy shit" so was great to see that translated

Ashley: Pike's return and the sun tree moment, and just in general and seeing Gilmore for the first time - it was glorious

Sam: Seeing Scanlan up on the roof amidst rain and flame, it was improv'd on the spot and now it's something that fans can watch and enjoy on their screens - "You know I love you" moment, it's cool that it's different from the game, I always pushed to change moments just a little bit, cause we have the game and we can go watch it again, so it's fun to try new things out

Arthur: Gilmore's shop, getting to flesh that out was really fun, we really went nuts, we shouldn't have gone that detailed, it's crazy - but number 1 moment hasn't come out yet and you'll see it soon!!

(In honor of Arthur's nuptials, they bring out champagne! And they toast for them but also for all the designers and artists and animators and their amazing work. Very cute.)
