If you're looking for more insights and awareness of D.I.D. (dissociative identity disorder) for writing or just your own awareness, I highly recommend both this article about and the autobiographical comics created by LB Lee, a system who's put their varied experiences to paper. The article is from an outside perspective and helps people unfamiliar with the disorder/systems to gain awareness of what this disorder is for them, and can be in general. The comics are at LB's itch.io, also linked, and are LB's works to share what they know amd experience, and process as well.
I discovered them by accident over 10 years ago at this point, I think, and while I haven't kept up regularly I did read a loooot of their comics which helped me understand D.I.D. more. I was working on an OC with D.I.D. and wanted to gain a better understanding (project is now vastly different and oc no longer relevant, but maybe in another project), but LB's comics were really eye-opening for me.
I just remembered last month about this experience and found this article about them as well. I just want to share this in case more people want a great resource for their research! Or just wat to expand their knowledge of the kinds of people we interact with in the world!

“There’s chaos in you”: a Moon Knight discussion
Let this be a lesson for anyone who wants to write about mental health in pop culture. This is how it’s done. Content Warning: Moon Knight contains depictions of violence, child abuse, gaslighting, and body mutilation. United States of Tara contains discussions of child sexual abuse, ableism, and gaslighting. Viewer discretion is advised. Spoilers for Moon Knight ahead. Note: I’m just talking…

I hate what modern comics are doing with The Hulk comics and Bruce Banner more specifically.
This is the creator letting people know the hulks are not separate entities but aspects of Bruce banner from his D.I.D.
Like stop making them into different identities, especially ones that are AWARE of ewachother.🤦‍♀️
youtube
But I wouldn’t mind Bruce banner being cured from being the hulk for good once he addresses his trauma.
I would miss the hulk cuz he’s one of my faves💕 but it would be nice to know there’s hop at the end of the tunnel for him and other may be dealing with this because in reality they HAVE to seek therapy to break down the personalities and address the trauma each one holds.
plus no one can live in angry forever (they made a comic about that with the hulk surviving a nuclear war and being a. Sole survivor but kept alive by his hulk personality dude to his anger/rage)
Plus it’d be nice to see a traumatic situation followed by another , lead to a potential disaster but ultimately he steers it for good, mostly ( Joe fix it )

I'm not trying to make light of being homeless, but I'd be lying if I acted like I wasn't sorta happy for the chance.
Tumblr media
Another, 3 girls in my head comic.
Reminder-
Dark blue jacket girl's name is "Ina" like inhibition.
Green dress girl's name is "Amber" like Ambitious.
And the gray shirt girl's name is "Anne" like Anxiety.
I love systems, plurals, and D.I.D systems, but I am not any of these identities, I'm simply personifying general emotions and naming them based on a major aspect I feel especially regarding my own transition.

Hey!, I just finished rewatching moon knight and now scrolling through the moon knight tags when I came across a post about how Mr knight is actually Marc Spector and Steven Grant is a playboy billionaire in the comics and I was shook. Then I came across your post of you ranting about the differences from the show to the comics, which blew my mind!, and now I’m so intrigued and curious about the true lore of moon knight, every time I try to search about it on google I just get references from the shows (so frustrating) I can’t afford to buy the comics, so if you can/want could you please tell me all the important and interesting facts/lore that’s in the moon knight comics?
Sorry for the long message, just came across your page and pressed follow, love your content!. ❤️
AAAAAAGGGGHHHH HOLY SHIT. HOLY SHIT. GIIGLING AND KICKING MY FEET IN THE AIR. HEY, LOOK MA, I MADE IT!! I GET TO EXPLAIN THE MOON KNIGHT COMICS LORE TO SOME GUY ON THE INTERNET!!
in all seriousness, this made my day. I'm so glad you enjoy my content, and I will happily explain to you the MK lore!
I completely get you on the not wanting to but the comics thing. Comics are expensive. Honey, imma be real with you, readcomiconline.li is where it's at. It's where I read all of the comics I didn't have.
So before I go on a tangent and explain things, and this goes for anyone wanting to start reading the comics, heres a little list of all the comics I've read so far in what I understand to be chronological order.
It's a little bit cheesy and a VERY long run, but Marc Spector: Moon Knight from 1989-94 is maaayybbeee where you want to start off, but maybe not. I didn't start off with this run, but even as bad as the old comics are, they're a bit important.
But, I HIGHLY suggest you start out with the Lemire and Smallwood run from 2016. It was the first run I completed, and it's an amazing run and VERY important to read. Many people say it's the best run. It's certainly a run, I'll tell you that. ( Also I didn't read that one online, I received it last year as a Christmas gift. Also readcomic doesn't have all of the issues, so be warned on that. )
Next I read From The Dead. And I moved on to Vengeance of The Moon Knight from 2009. And after I'd suggest reading Age of Khonshu, Devils Reign and then The Midnight Mission. You can read all of these for free on readcomiconline.li ( don't type in comics plural because it will direct you to the wrong site ) be warned though because there are a lot of ads and you will get jumpscared by anime boobies.
~~
Now moving onto what you asked me for. The important stuff, right.
I'm new to this whole comic reading stuff as well, and for anyone else reading this who knows more than I do, please add additional information I missed down in the reply section. It would mean a lot. So now I'm going to give a you a quick run down on Marc's origin story. ( And for a quick disclaimer, I will come off as not taking myself seriously in some parts of this post because I don't take myself seriously lol. )
Marc Spector was born on March 9th, 1987 in Chicago Illinois into a Jewish family. His father was Elias Spector and his mother was Wendy Spector ( his younger brother being Randall Spector )Elias was a rabbi who manged to escape Nazi prosecution during the days of Hitler and all that jazz. Because Elias was a rabbi, Randall would get picked on at school a lot, and Marc would be there to stand up for him. Even at a young age Marc was exposed to a lot of violence. That could come from growing up yk... Kinda poor and having to stand up for your lil bro.
Marc's violent nature was really born when a close family friend of his, Yitz Perlmen was discovered to be a secret serial killer who targeted Jews. From what I understand, Perlmen tried to Kill Marc ( mind you Marc was like 11 or 12 ) but Marc had escaped but his traumatic experiences led him to form D.I.D
As seen in the Lemire run, the first time Marc had encountered Khonshu was when he was 12 and was getting diagnosed for his D.I.D Marc wasn't told to his face from the doctor about his disorder and was told to step outside the office. Marc tried to evesdrop on the conversation, and from outside of the doctor's office, he meets Khonshu. Khonshu tells him, " That man in there is not your true father. I am. " Mind you, Marc is 12!!! 12!!!! Khonshu began manipulating Marc since he was twelve because he was, obviously really fucking young, and traumatized. Khonshus tactics were to strip Marc away from his religion and culture and make him submit to him.
So anyways, Marc was sent to Putnam Psychiatric Hospital and would stay there until he was 18 when his father funeral came along and he was let go for a week to go visit his family. This is where we learn Marc's relationship with his father was complex. Marc tells his mother, Wendy, that his father must have been happy to send him away because he was embarrassed by him. Wendy and Marc have an argument, which ends in Marc saying he's going to the bathroom, when he actually leaves to his childhood bedroom and escapes out the window when he hears Khonshus voice.
Marc later enlisted into the U.S marines Corps and served as a private for a couple years. But on Marc's second tour to Iraq, superiors started to report his odd behavior and they found out that Marc had lied about his disorder, leaving him to be discharged. Marc joined the CIA and served with his brother Randall. Randall was jealous of Marcs talents and killed Marc's girlfriend, Lisa, because she was going to expose a gun scheme. Marc then like... Threw bombs at Randall and shit and then assumed he was dead...but he wasn't.
Marc left the CIA after that and started doing illegal boxing, where he met his soon to be best friend, Jean-Paul Duchamp ( usually refered to as Frenchie ) and they became mercenaries together and started killing a bunch of people, in Marc's case, for mooonnneeyyy!!! Get that bag, girlie. And then Marc got put on trial for war crimes!! His crime being yk...assistanting the president of this south African country called Bosqueverde as one does.
And then he started to do missions under this group call the Karnak Cowboys and fell in love with one of his groupmates, Layla El-faouly, as seen in later issues of The Midnight Mission. Then she fucking died when an escape went wrong.
So anyways Marc meets this funny lil guy named Raoul Bushman ( he is not funny lil guy, he's killed hundred of people, probably) So Marc works for him with Frenchie and they, together, set to north Sudan to raid a dig site. ( This should start to sound familiar, as it was briefly touched on in the show when Arthur's guys captured Steven and put cuffs on him and slammed him in the back of their car ) Looks like raid shadow legends went down again, and things started to get not so epic when Raoul killed the lead Archeologist of the dig site, Peter Alraune in front of his daughter Marlene. This pissed the ever loving shit out of Marc because even though Marc likes violence, he doesn't enjoy violence against innocent people, and so he punches the fucker but uh oh! The Raoul Bushman Strikes Back, and he fucking KILLS MARC IN RETURN AND EVERYONE ELSE EXPECT FOR FRENCHIE AND MARLENE AND THIS ONE MF WHO TOLD HIM HE WOULD TELL HIM WHERE THE DIG SITE WAS. ( really Raoul left Marc mortally wounded, but he was on the brick of death, basically)
Marc was able to regain conscious and drag himself halfway to Khonshus tomb ( which is what Raoul was looking for ) Marlene and a bunch of other citizens find Marc and they carry him to Khonshus tomb. Marc hears Khonshus voice for yet another time, and Marc is revived and becomes the Moon Knight we all know and love. Then he basically killed Raoul's guys and then fell in love with Marlene.
So that's his origin story. Now onto the stuff I know as fact but it won't be explained in chronological order because I haven't read a ton of comics to explain it in chronological order.
He used Steven as a a way to handle money and build wealth so they could have recourses like vehicles, weapons and a ton of other random bullshit ( go!! ) that they don't need. Jake was used as a new York taxi driver so that he had his eye in the streets and knew when shit was goin down. They're both kind of horny. Jake literally spends some of his free time in a strip clubs drinking rum. ( As seen in the midnight mission and implied on in the Lemire run. )
His relationship with Marlene was long, but didn't last because, if I'm recalling correctly, Marc had a mental breakdown and decided to basically stop working for Khonshu so he could be with Marlene. But soon after he started hearing Khonshus voice again and Marlene couldn't take anymore of it, so she left him.
And then there's that bullshit with The Midnight Man. All I know is that he passed away from cancer and had a son named Jeff Wilde. Jeff aspired to Marc and wanted to be his sidekick, kind of like Robin and Batman in the Lego Batman movie with a little less adoption, but Marc kept on refusing as a way to protect Jeff. The Jeff had this whole thing where he turned evil or some shit idk and I guess Marc killed him? I'm not sure. Please, moon knight gang, let me know what happened in the reply section because I'm ignorant.
Marc had his independence from Khonshu after banishing Khonshu to Asgardian Prison ( seen in Age of Khonshu and discussed in The Midnight Mission) and decided " fuck you, I don't need need you anymore. Imma do my own thing and you can't do nothing about it " and then he became Mr. Knight. Mr. Knight is kind of a detective and he consults with policemen ( as seen in From The Dead ) Moon Knight is the one who does all the fighting.
From where Marc's development is at right now, Marc was running a thing called the Midnight Mission, which was a place where citizens would go to to report strange things happening in the city.
Additional, fun information:
Marc has a daughter named Diatrice. He only knows about it because Jake had a secret relationship with Marlene on the side after Marc and Marlene broke up.
He sleeps all day in the tomb of Khonshu and fights crime at night. He's like a bat!!
His ringtone ( as seen in the midnight mission) is The Killing Moon by Echo and The Bunnymen. ( Y'all should listen to it, if you haven't. it's really good. ).
He drives a red convertible car ( as seen in the Brain Micheal Bendis run, don't read it it's REALLY bad and insufficient. ) and also a motorcycle ( as see in Vengeance of The Moon Knight)
He was originally supposed to fight mainly just werewolf's and um... Writers at Marvel had different ideas.
His favorite drink is an ice cold vodka ( as seen in the Midnight Mission)
He had a mansion and then his money went bye bye and now he lives in a haunted house ( as seen, once again, in the Midnight Mission)
Frenchie is also gay! Hes married to a man named Rob! ( And this is only from what I've heard, by he apparently had a secret crush on Marc at some point.)
And yeah. That's all I have for ya today. Thank you if you made it this far, and I hope I was able to satisfy your curiosity a little bit!
Goodknight everyone!!!

This is a redux of a very old comic that I felt could use some updating, is still relevant, and is probably something many of you have not seen as it was only posted to my tumblr back in 2019. This originally said "...I just saw Split..." but since then there have been more bad examples of D.I.D. in popular media that has caused people to have these kind of questions.
I'll let you in on a secret...the "scary" one to us is simply the one that will make us brush our teeth, drink water and eat when we're supposed to, and get to bed on time. He is scary to us, but not for anyone else. If you were expecting a monster that's only because you've been watching too much media, and have truly misunderstood the person with alters just trying to be seen as a person.
*Also, sorry about posting a day late, yesterday got the better of me.
[ID]
Panel 1: Jak is standing with his arms folded as a person comes up to him with both arms outstretched, saying "I just watched some media about D.I.D. and I just gotta ask...Which one of you is the SCARY one?" with the word 'scary' being written in a font that looks like dripping liquid.
Panel 2: Jak motions forward and says "Here, I'll go get him for you."
Panel 3: Jak and Atom are now fused together and slightly opaque. Jak is bent forward and Atom is stretching back; both of them are holding their heads. Above, in Jak's handwriting reads "Arrrgh! I'm...I'm..." and then in Atom's it says "Changing!" The person is taken aback and looks scared.
Panel 4: Jak is now gone and Atom remains in control. He says, "Blegh! I need to brush my teeth. Jeez! We haven't eaten anything? Doesn't anyone take care of the body?! Oooo! They're gonna hear it when I get back." The person puts their head in their hand.

You will be fed to the pigs if you (DNI if)...
Note: I will probably only follow you back if you show a genuine interest in my stuff and I like your stuff in turn (aka we could have a conversation together). I am a bit picky about moots, but you are always welcome to follow of course.
If I block you, I block you. I try to be vague when it comes to vents and vent about the behavior, not the person, but ultimately it is your responsibility if you see crap you shouldn't when you're blocked.
You don't like villain F/Os or have an issue with villain F/Os being made soft. I won't argue with your preferences, but painting it as "bad writing" or "not canon" due to a difference perspective is just crap.
You are a minor. Sorry, I'm just not comfy with minors following or interacting with me.
You are a bigot (homophobic, transphobic, sexist, racist, antisemitic, etc.) or you romanticize characters being bigots. You will be blocked on sight. Exclusionists will also be blocked.
You are a map, proshipper, or ship adults with minors. I am also not comfortable with shipping with animal characters that are just animals with no humanoid features (ex: shipping romantically with a character like P/ikachu is gross, anthros like M/ordecai are fine though), incest ships, people who ship with real people, and so on. I am not comfortable with characters that have canonically assaulted someone, are predators, or child abusers.
You unnecessarily dictate how others write characters, especially asexual ones (pointing out the use of bad stereotypes is not this and completely understandable).
You are not plural safe. (BTW I use the term plural, please use this term, not D.I.D). I have a zero tolerance policy for not only people that are negative about/to plurality and systems, but also people that misuse plural experiences for their own entertainment. Some examples would include:
Featuring characters doing things very similar to "switches" because you find it funny/to show they're "mentally unstable".
Have your character talk to "people inside their head" to paint them as crazy.
Treat an evil alter ego or persona as another personality.
Painting alters or alter equivalent characters as evil.
That shit isn't for your singlet characters and it definitely isn't for your "crazed" or "violent" characters, and alters deserve to be treated kindly.
There is some media I am uncomfortable with and I will block you if your F/Os are from these sources: SAO (sword-art-online), R/ayman, J/ekyll and H/yde, and H/arry P/otter. (These medias make me uncomfortable for one reason or another it's not always for moral reasons, please respect that even if you don't understand).
Other wise we should get along just fine!

Something I love about a ship like moonmoon (altershipping in the Moon Knight System) is how unique it is. Like... Alters in relationships exist, but it's not something very explored in media since D.I.D. isn't well explored itself. So you get ships like Steven/Marc and they introduce this whole new avenue to closeness these lovers would have. You can question and consider how their relationship formed, what they've been through, and how they express their love, and you can have such interesting stories and dynamics.
Like... Think of how it works in terms of canon, or how it works in AUs. You can play with this so easily. It reminds me of when the first Venom movie came out and the ship of symbrock or veddie became super popular. Like it exsisted, but the movie gave people who didnt want to read a bunch of comics a taste of this stange ship, and I too love that ship.
Ships like this that have such interesting depth or uniqueness to them are so awesome. So, so cool man. Love it.

ofunholylambs the plagiarist
@ofunholylambs, known as Kirby (formerly Eden, formerly Buttons) is a plagiarist. An art thief. And if they do a commission or a custom for you, I can near to guarantee that it is, in fact, a scam, ripping you off by copying someone else's work.
Over the past year in the Helluva Boss/Hazbin Hotel fandom over on Twitter, he has been stalking, harassing, tracing art, playing the victim, telling people to KYS via CuriousCat, deadnaming, misgendering, and various other things... all because someone dared to make a sheep demon OC that shared his (at the time) extremely biblical name.
And had that been the only incident, it would be understandable... but mind, this little loser also was positive Laila (the purple sheep from the Alastor comic) was a rip off of his OC. He genuinely believed that, just because she is a sheep demon OC. This has become a troubling pattern, which has also included such beautiful moments as ATTEMPTING TO OUT A TRANS MAN TO HIS NOT-AT-ALL SUPPORTIVE PARENTS, and when that didn't work out the way he wanted it to, he decided to instead accuse the same person of being a groomer (despite the fact that he, himself, had encouraged someone with D.I.D. who had a younger alter to perform sexual roleplays with him at one point).
Needless to say, this is not an individual that you want to be around your page, he isn't someone that you want in your life, and he isn't someone that you should want on Tumblr either. That goes double for anyone with an Alastor-based account, either, as he WILL force his romantic feelings onto you, and when you don't reciprocate (because he's a 4'9" manchild who never bathes, cleans up after himself, or takes responsibility for anything) he will do everything he can to hurt you. Including, based on him being friends with @ruskeptical, being someone that actively produces CP (as both of them live in the US, even art that isn't based off a real person is a jail or prison worthy offense, with both of them admitting to doing so).
And that's not even talking about all the racism, the threats, the blackmail, and so, so, SO much more, I would be here all day if I tried to tell you it all.
Put simply, Ladies and Gentlemen... the guy is absolutely out of his mind, purely delusional, with no buffer. And now he's trying to steal and scam people out of money. Do the right thing, Tumblr; toss this fucking trash out the door.
Below are the ORIGINAL concepts for the In Wonderland AU outfit that he CLAIMS to have created first, made by the original artist _bunnihopper_ on Twitter, from November 17th, 18th, and December 15th — and, as a final note, before I bid you all adieu; note the particular wording in the second image for an extra creepy realization...
Stay safe out there, everyone, and remember not to trust a wolf in sheep's clothes.

At this point in its history, Marvel isn’t known for tinkering with its proven superhero formula. And yet “Moon Knight,” the studio’s current Disney+ series, has taken some unexpected chances.
Its debut episode introduced Steven Grant, a maladroit museum gift-shop clerk with a dodgy British accent, played by Oscar Isaac. Isaac also plays Marc Spector, a grizzled American mercenary who shares the same body with Grant — and who is also Moon Knight, the crime-fighting avatar of an ancient Egyptian deity.
As the story of “Moon Knight” has revealed, Spector has had dissociative identity disorder, or D.I.D., since childhood, and Grant is an alternate identity he created to shield himself from trauma and abuse.
Tumblr media
“Moon Knight” was a risk for Isaac, too, even though his résumé already includes some of the biggest fantasy franchises Hollywood has produced. While he has made a whole career of projects that are many orders of magnitude smaller — performing “Hamlet” and “Romeo and Juliet” for the Public Theater and starring in intimate dramas like “The Card Counter” and “Scenes From a Marriage” — he has also been featured in film series like “Star Wars” and “X-Men.” Those blockbusters elevated Isaac to greater levels of recognition, but the grueling work they require and lack of input they typically allow made him hesitant when Marvel sought him for “Moon Knight.”
As Isaac, 43, explained in a video interview last week, the pleasure of “Moon Knight” was getting to explore the title character in a way that felt right to him, even if his approach did not always fit the Marvel mold.
Tumblr media
Whether Moon Knight moves on to his own movie or a superteam like the Avengers “doesn’t matter so much,” Isaac said from the offices of the production company that he and his wife, the writer-director Elvira Lind, operate in Brooklyn.
“It’s a new character that we’re taking a chance on,” he said. “The nature of the story is this investigation, this slow-reveal mystery.”
“If it goes somewhere else, that’s great,” he added. “I’m glad it’s not just an advertisement for synergy.”
Ahead of the “Moon Knight” finale on Wednesday, Isaac spoke about the making of the series, of which he is also an executive producer. He also spoke about the unexpected oscillations of his career and about working for Disney while the company weathers a political firestorm. These are edited excerpts from that conversation.
Do you get two paychecks for playing two roles on “Moon Knight”?
I should, man. It’s funny because that’s what I was apprehensive about: I didn’t want it to feel like this masturbatory thing. When I started off, I was very adamant that I didn’t want to do the gimmicky, switching back and forth, Jekyll and Hyde part of it. I really segregated Marc and Steven, even asked if we could shoot them on different days. Just do it through reflections and don’t ask me to put on a different hat.
Tumblr media
Some actors say they accept immediately when Marvel comes calling, but you didn’t. Why not?
I wasn’t, at that point, super eager to jump into a big production. I wanted to fall in love with acting again. I was a bit tired. I’ve got two young kids, and I was ready to take a step back, do smaller films that weren’t as big of a commitment. When this came, my immediate sense was, ugh, this is bad timing.
As a comics fan, did you feel like you were getting a B- or C-list character foisted on you?
Yeah, they’re pretty much down to the dregs. Although people said that for Iron Man, too — then it changes cinema forever and what an amazing performance that was. Part of the attraction was its obscurity, to be honest.
What were your inspirations for how you play Steven Grant?
It’s an homage to the things I love, like Peter Sellers and the British “Office” and “Stath Lets Flats” and Karl Pilkington. I was also watching “Love on the Spectrum” — these people are going on these dates, who are autistic, who are feeling all the same things that we all would feel, but they haven’t developed these masks to hide it all. It’s all out there in the open. There was something I found so moving about that. I started doing the character at home, and my kids were asking me to do him all the time
You spoke of feeling burned out on big-budget projects. When did you start experiencing that?
Toward the middle to end of the run on “Star Wars.” The commitment of time was such a long one, and the windows of availability were very specific. I started to get hungry for those character studies and working with those great directors.
You had worked professionally as an actor for several years and had some prominent theater roles. But did you find that big-budget films gave you some breakthrough opportunities?
There were a few supporting performances that gave me the opportunity to do really different characters on these big stages, like “Robin Hood” and “Sucker Punch.” What was fun was that nobody had any idea who I was. I played the King of England in “Robin Hood,” and nobody had a problem with that. Now that I’m more known, suddenly it’s like, can he play English? Should he play English? In this age, we know everything about everybody, and of course people have a problem with suspension of disbelief.
Tumblr media
So as a Juilliard alumnus and a veteran Shakespeare performer, you didn’t think these types of films were somehow beneath you?
No, I didn’t feel like that. I wanted to make a living as an actor. I didn’t have the luxury of ethics; I didn’t have the luxury of integrity. [Laughs.] I felt like I could bring my point of view to whatever came my way. Early on, I was like, “If I had the one shot, I could prove …” And then I would get a chance, it would come and it would go, and I would realize, Oh! I guess I need another shot now. After a while, it was clear the only thing you can control is your craft and staying curious, and exercising that craft in whatever comes your way that you think is good.
Did starring in “Inside Llewyn Davis” feel like one of those opportunities for you?
That was completely life-altering in every single way. That was my first lead role. It was a Coen brothers movie. I played music. I still can’t believe that happened. I wanted it so badly and just worked my ass off beforehand. It was the serendipity of the moment that I did what I intended to do and the Coens took the risk on someone relatively unknown.
Was it strange that it led to even more fantasy franchise roles? Like, this is what they think of me?
I’ve been doing it long enough to know that there’s no “they” — it’s just people trying to make movies, whether they’re on a huge scale or a small scale. J.J. [Abrams] wanted to meet me [for “The Force Awakens”] while I was still shooting “A Most Violent Year.” I remember because Albert Brooks [his co-star on “A Most Violent Year”] left me a really funny message pretending to be J.J. before I went to go meet J.J. You take a leap of faith. And sure, had I not done that, perhaps I would have been available for some other thing that would have come my way. But no one ever knows.
You got an earlier shot at comic-book adaptations with “X-Men: Apocalypse.” It wasn’t well received, though I think it gets a bad rap. Is that a role you’ve disowned?
No, I don’t disown it. I know exactly what I went in there wanting to do and the reasons why. There were these amazing actors involved that I really wanted to work with, [James] McAvoy and [Michael] Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence. I collected X-Men growing up, and I loved Apocalypse, I just found him such a freaky, weird character. And then you get there and you’re like, Oh my God, I’ve got all these prosthetics on. I’ve got a suit on. I can’t move. I can’t see anybody. All these actors I wanted to work with — I can’t even see who they are. I still think back to that time with fondness. I wish it would have been a better film and that they would have taken care of the character a little better, but those are the risks.
Would you count your time making “Dune” with Denis Villeneuve as one of your typical franchise film experiences?
Denis was the reason to do that. When he came to me, he actually didn’t have a role in mind for me yet. He was like, “I’m doing ‘Dune,’ are you interested? What role is interesting to you?” We decided it was Leto. It was challenging to be a very specific sound in a big symphony.

And you knew, going in, that it’s a character with a limited life span?
Yes, that was part of the attraction.
Was “Star Wars” your closest frame of reference when Marvel sought you for “Moon Knight”? Was that what made you wary?
They are such big, huge films. As fun as they can be, you’re outputting a lot of energy and then you leave and you’re just exhausted. That was part of the fear. I didn’t anticipate how much creative flexibility there was going to be — how much energy it gave me back.
How so?
Once Mohamed [Diab, a director on “Moon Knight”] and I started talking about what it could be if we could put our lens on it, we were like, it’s way more important that we’re true to D.I.D. than to some kind of comic-book back story. When you do the research on what causes D.I.D., it’s not like one thing. It’s not, you watched something horrible happen and suddenly you break out into all these different personalities. It’s from sustained trauma and abuse over time. This is a survival mechanism that clicks into place for someone who’s experiencing that. That they’re able to fracture their mind to survive it is kind of astounding.
For much of the series, Marc and Steven would interact in discreet ways, like talking to each other in a mirror’s reflection. How did you handle the sequences we saw in last week’s episode, where the two were often standing side-by-side?
I had my brother, Michael [the actor Michael Benjamin Hernandez], who is a great actor and shares my DNA, stand in as my alter. Other times, it was a huge challenge technically as sometimes, especially in the wide shots, I’d have to act with no one and remember the blocking I had done as the other character and respond to the lines being fed to me in an earpiece I wore.
Was D.I.D. a subject you knew about before making “Moon Knight”?
I didn’t. I had just done “The Card Counter,” which was all about trauma and living with P.T.S.D. I had been doing some research into that, and there was something that felt organic about seeing what’s on the other end of the spectrum.
Does “Moon Knight” speak to why stories about alternate identities and multiverses are becoming increasingly popular?
We live in a post-reality world. Things used to feel a lot clearer, and now they’re not. Nothing can be true or authentic anymore, and I think that’s being reflected in a lot of our popular culture.
You’re a prominent ambassador of Disney’s brand at a time when the company is experiencing conservative backlash and political retribution for its opposition to Florida’s “Parental Rights in Education” law, which its critics call “Don’t Say Gay.” Is this something you feel a personal investment in, and does that backlash affect you individually?
No, I’m not experiencing that. I’m not on social media, so luckily, if that is coming my way, I’m ignorant of it. But everything has a political undercurrent at the moment. Disney was forced to take a stand, and I’m glad that they took the right stand there. Sometimes silence or neutrality is just not going to work. It’s astounding to watch a vindictive politician try to own the libs. I grew up in Florida, and I recognize how dysfunctional the state is. But it’s an interesting time where everything is parsed, and if Disney is going to own so much of the entertainment industry, they’ve got to expect to come up against some tough decisions.
Are these the kinds of considerations you’re going to have to make now whenever you work for a major studio?
I’d rather not. [Laughs.] That’s going to require me to do a whole lot of research beforehand that I’d rather not do. I’d rather spend that time figuring out a good character.
There has to be some conscientiousness about it, but at the same time, you’re also trying to make a living and you’re trying to live in the world. I just want to make good stuff and hopefully try to do it in a responsible way.

Have any official Marvel comics had Bruce Banner and Marc Spector talk it out about them both being superheroes with D.I.D. and a habit of coming back from the dead?
