Soulmate au but chaotic.

Danny gets summoned by Ras al Ghul, intending to use him as a hostage against Tim/Damian (I'm not sure which one I want) due to him being thier soulmate.

Ras makes a mistake though as Danny is in his Phantom form and decided to make the creepy old dude pay. He phased out of his cage and restraints and overshadowed Ras, making him run into a closet run headfirst into the wall and then left his unconscious body in the locked room.

Phantom, not knowing anything other than this other teen is his soulmate introduced himself as Phantom and asked if they were okay. Somehow the situation devolves into Danny deciding to take revenge against everyone who has ever hurt thier soulmate and prank everyone along the way.

Batfam? He breaks into the Wayne manor, calmly announced he knew who they really were and proceeds to repeatedly leave tiny plastic camels everywhere. Tv remote isn't working and you go to change the batteries? There's tiny plastic camels in there. Pressing snooze on you're alarm clock? A tiny plastic camel is the first thing you see in the morning. Jason being annoying? He opens his bathroom vanity and a sea of tiny GIJoe sized camels pour out.

Best part is they're not actually plastic >:)

Danny has also

1. Painted the entirety of Ras base a reflective neon orange

2. Made a show of following Ras and Talia separately around thier bases only a few inches behind them until they have to turn around and immediately enter into a startled battle stance and demand to know what he is. He sends the video to his soulmate for lols

Bonus points if they're watching this together on the batcomputer and one of them says "We won't let that happen to us"

And Danny responds behind them, shocking them.

3. Returns Tim's spleen to him in perfect condition. The bast part if that the batfam have no context for this and think Phantom, a Lazarus Pit demon just gave him a random human organ of unknown origin.

4. Alfred has pseudo tamed Danny with hot chocolate. This does not stop him from playing pranks and tricks on the bats. One of Phantoms favorite things to do is stand over peoples beds while they sleep and scare them when they wake up.

5. Phantom turned Constantine into a cat and played with his paws for 20 minutes. Then just poofed him into the JL watchtower with his trench coat. In all fairness John had said something about no one being able to get him to stop smoking and Danny took that as a challenge.

6. Cyborg keeps getting hacked and getting rick rolled

7. Wonder Woman has a non venomous snake wrapped around her neck as a scarf. No one knows where it came from but she loves it.

8. Phantom keeps writing his soulmate sappy/flirty/encouraging love notes and leaving them around the manor for them to find

9. Bruce keeps finding colorful fake mustaches on his face randomly and is having a mental breakdown.

10. Danny using a duck call as a method of sending coded messages via morse code. This happened immediately after someone told him about a drake being a male duck. Most of these messages are like the aforementioned little notes

okayyyy, so right off the bat the chemistry is so great. you all have a taurus sun and mercury which is going to be very comfortable. they have a cancer moon and i think they would be able to help you sort out your emotions and would be there for you emotionally anytime you needed it. they would definitely nurture you. they have a gemini venus which is very compatible with your aries venus because gemini is always looking for a new adventure and someone to have intellectual conversations with, which aries will deliver. aries venus likes that gemini is fun and rolls with the punches. their mars sign is aires and with yours being in sagittarius the three of you would be a troublesome trio lol. chaotic good if you will. i think you and the twins would be such amazing friends and i think you could have a really good romantic relationship with either.

First Ship: I have a few that happened around the same time? I think my first was Leo and Piper from Charmed. But also Glenn and Maggie in The Walking Dead and Tara and Rosita. 

3 Ships: 

1. Wyler (Wednesday and Tyler): I love them, they are chaos, they are complex, they are both great characters and they are perfect for each other. I love thinking of all the ways they could help each other grow, and all of the shenanigans they could get into together eventually. like in season 1 tyler is the hyde and he is kinda letting wednesday figure things out on her own/hiding stuff. now, imagine he has nothing to hyde (lol) and they just investigate stuff? monster boy and kooky witch girl, being menaces together. so romantic. I just think they’re neat. 

2. Everlark (Peeta and Katniss): They are so sweet. they went through so much together and I love their slowburn. the development of their relationship was so beautiful and reading mockingjay and all of the difficult emotions Katniss experienced when she thought Peeta was dead and when he was hijacked. it was so sad but it all ended so beautifully. I loved how they accepted each other and supported each other in healing their trauma. i loved their happy/bittersweet ending. 

3. Romione (Ron and Hermione): I just like them together. I like how they started out as kids who didn’t get along, then they became friends who argue over silly things, then their feelings developed. i think they compliment each other well and i like how they challenge each other. like Hermione likes arguing and debating, Ron likes to question her and he is silly and likes to start arguments. Hermione can be very serious, but Ron keeps everything interesting. I feel like Hermione would make Ron feel safe and grounded when he is used to having a chaotic life with 6 siblings. and yes, the movies ruined Ron and I will never forgive them for that.

Currently Watching: I haven’t watched any shows in a bit. I was on Wednesday episode 4 but I haven’t watched it in like 2 weeks (it was my 3rd rewatch). I have been watching Danny Gonzalez and Kurtis Conner on youtube tho.

Continuing on the vein of Danny having crushes on red vigilantes there's no way Danny wouldn't have a bit of a crush on red hood.

that would be funny honestly. i've seen a few different angles on danny's relationship with jason. they've both died, one is considerably more murdery than the other. they're chaotic. i'm pretty used to seeing them as either brothers (affectionate) or brothers (antagonistic) or chaotic besties or hate each other like cats and dogs. i don't think i've really seen the scenereo where they date/ have crushes. then again there is a significant age difference unless we age danny up.

personally i've always been partial to chaos. so my boys vibing and making death jokes is the mood. i don't think danny could abide the murder though. if anything that would lead to him being openly antagonistic towards jason and jason being fond of the obnoxious little fucker. danny just being openly sarcastic and mean towards jason somehow equals a decent kid in jason's book. no romantic overtones needed.

i somehow can also imagine the media pairing the two as a villain team even though phantom is fully trying to do good. jason would find that kinda annoying, but danny would be fully offended.

i guess to get to the point where danny has a crush on jason it would be a full circle kind of moment. where we have danny initially hate jason, jason takes that well and affectionately big bros danny. danny initially is creeped out but eventually recognizes it as genuine affection and then has no idea what to do with that. because lets be honest danny doesn't have a lot of role models or cool adults to look up to. he has clockwork, frostbite, pandora, and maybe lancer. jazz doesn't count because sibling bound. so jason being kinda cool older brother who thinks he's funny and doesn't try to shoot him on sight? that's pretty nice. maybe nice enough to lead to confusing feelings

granted, danny will never admit having a crush and hardly even acknowledges having these feelings to himself. everyone around them who notices though finds the situation hilarious, especially jason. - Hestia

Harry Potter Hogwarts Legacy Appreciation Week - Day 4: Favorite Ships by Moots

Hey guys! This is the fourth entry for @endlessly-cursed’s fantastic HPHL Appreciation Week. Today the focus is on other people’s ships! Y’all have made some wonderful couples and friend groups/duos! There are so many of them that again it is a challenge to narrow down which ones will be featured for the post. Anyway here goes:

Tedelia - Adelia Selwyn @thatravenpuffwitch and @cursebreakerfarrier

Slytherin and Gryffindor in love and getting along like peas and carrots? It’s hard to believe for the common student but if the passion is there it is going to happen. Dear Addy is far from the stereotype of her house and she is so wonderful and compassionate! Teddy and his dormmates are a group of chaotic Gryffindors but they love their gals all the same. Together he and Addy have built a beautiful family with three great kiddos. Danny is a frequent visitor to the Selwyn-Ellison household and he loves Teddy, Addy and their kids so much!! He considers the kids part of his found family just as much as their parents, they’re like nephews and nieces to him and he tries to find them great gifts for their birthdays and Christmas celebrations. Danny has always been close with Teddy and Adelia - he and Teddy are colleagues as aurors and he stops by to see Adelia frequently while working in France. The role that Tedelia has in Danny’s life is why it is number one on this list!

Roxariel - Gabriel Sapieha @slytherindisaster and Roxie Haley @beloved-bucky

This wholesome ship reaches number two spot by a close margin to Tedelia. I cannot decide which should be number two because its more like that it and Tedelia hold equal places in my book. Still this ship is one of my favorites because the gal in here is Danny’s sister figure and best friend Roxie! Gabriel is also a dear friend to him! He is protective of Danny and cares a lot for his well-being, where to he would put himself in harm’s way to keep him safe. The dynamic for Roxariel is unique - I just love how Gabriel and Roxie are still able to love each other so much even though she is a vampire. In a time where racism and supremacy still dominate the wizarding world, this couple can be an example of how minorities can still achieve successful and fulfilling lives just like regular people. Danny is also very grateful to have Gabriel and Roxie in his life and they’re very dear to him - his life would never be complete in their absence.

Galehan - Siobhan Llewelyn @kc-and-co and Galen Stagg @cursebreakerfarrier

Two sweethearts that have it all. Their story is about living life to the fullest. Bonding over a love of magizoology and outdoorsy-ness, Bon-bon and Galen live a very unique and epic lifestyle with many connections around the world. They look over many creature reserves in several countries - one of which is located in the U.S. state of Arizona. Danny vibes with the couple over their appreciation and reverence of the outdoors, reminding him of the better angels of his old home far away. He loves Bon-bon so much and they’ve been best buddies since their Hogwarts days. Galen is such a sweet and soft boy with great compassion and acceptance for minority groups which Danny really appreciates! When working in America he often stays at one of the reserves under the care of Shiv and Galen and is always happy to see them and hear about their latest adventures!

Reubeila - Leila Hellebore @whatwouldvalerydo and Reuben Willows @that-scouse-wizard

While I don’t bring up this ship much it still deserves recognition. Like Roxariel, this ship is another great example of how normally disadvantaged groups in wizarding society are still capable of having romantic feelings, falling in love, getting married and raising a family! Reuben is an awesome quidditch mate of Danny and Leila is a Slytherin lady with demon heritage. Like him they’re both are the type that may seem intimating on the outside but on the inside they’re just amazing friends who do great things for those they know and do their best to give back!

Ok this is gonna be long. I’ve literally been slowly working on this for… too long. I’m just in a mood to have a long discussion about ships. I’ll be looking at canon and not, so bare with me. I don’t ship all of these personally. I’m mostly just picking the most popular ones. I chose to leave out a few that I just don’t want to talk about. I tried to keep this loosely chronological, but that quickly went to hell. None of this is meant to be hate towards anyone’s ship, just my personal opinions on each of them.

Canon:

Scott x Allison: True Classic

Scallison is so sweet as it is truly the epitome of young love. Romeo and Juliet, except Romeo is even more of an idiot and Juliet is a badass who dies for a cause. They’re moral and ethical codes are both highly valued by themselves, even if they don’t align with others very often. They loved with everything they had. They were beautiful. We’re they soulmates in the end, or just the first love who will always hold a special place in your heart? Who knows, but I’ll always love these immature kids who thought their love could change everything.

Stiles x Lydia: The Long Awaited

Stydia is as slow burn as you can get. Unfortunately their actual getting together was slightly rushed in my opinion. They didn’t have time to find their own as a couple because Stiles just wasn’t in the show enough at that point. I know the reasons behind it, but it did leave this couple at an awkward stage of official-but-not-shown. The idea that Stiles loved her as a kid, immature and infatuated, and he saw her for who she really was, will always be cute. Then they grew, changed, became friends, and found other people. Them finding each other later on, having real love that’s developed slowly, is a wonderful arc. Though, a part of me will always believe they should have pursued other story lines in the wake of Stiles’ absence from the plot. They’re finally together! …but we don’t get to see it.

Jackson x Lydia: The Image

Oh Jackson and Lydia. Honestly, I love them. Their connection at a time in their lives when they couldn’t open up to anyone else, just hits me right in the feels. I mean, god that HUG. You know the one. Always brings me to tears. I’m so sad their relationship was almost entirely depicted during Jackson’s kanima time when he couldn’t think nor truly act for himself. Those small moments of scared vulnerability when he wanted to protect her from himself… I’ll miss these two. They deserved to find other people and remain life-long friends. I loved their moment in the last episode. I wish they’d gotten to see each other grow. Also they had such bixbi solidarity vibes, and I’ll die on that hill.

Scott x Lydia: Leaders

Ok, I’m gonna be honest here. I ship it. The power couple they would have been?? Also them coming together after they lost Allison would have actually made sense. A part of me kinda wishes the writers had moved on from Stydia as a romantic relationship and leaned into them growing as friends and Stiles moving on from his childhood crush. Scott and Lydia actually would have had good chemistry. They were both very headstrong heroic types, but Lydia would have balanced Scott out well intellectually. They had the history, and I think it could had worked if they wrote it right. Plus, Scott and Lydia would have been a better endgame that Scalia.

Scott x Kira: New Beginnings

These two were adorable. Kira was a badass, don’t get me wrong, but she let herself be soft in a way Allison was always afraid to. This couple was truly Baby. Absolute dorks. I can definitely see the lasting quality between the two of them. They saw things very similarly, and had a ton in common. I do think Kira deserves more characterization outside of their relationship, like more of her friendship with Malia. Overall, her departure from the show will always be sad to me. It was bad writing. Scott was over her far too quickly.

Aiden x Lydia: Pretty People Herd

I honestly didn’t see much between these two other than mutual attraction. The best thing to come out of this relationship was Lydia’s line, “You’re not just a bad boy, Aiden. You’re a bad guy. And I don’t want to be with the bad guys.” Good character development moment.

Ethan x Danny: Step to Redemption

Danny really was the thing that made Ethan look outside of the pack for what he really wanted out of life. They had a few cute scenes. Gotta love Danny’s final remarks, “Dude, it’s Beacon Hills.”

Allison x Isaac: Unexpected Rebound

Ok, I like these two. Isaac could match Allison’s snark in a way Scott couldn’t. They both fought the progression of the relationship slightly. They didn’t expect to fall for each other. They were less willing to let someone in close. I’d love to have seen more… but unfortunately their time was limited. On a side note, sometimes their relationship did feel like ‘we both are in love with the same guy, let’s cope with each other’, but I find that completely valid. I’ll talk about Scallisaac later though.

Stiles x Malia: Anchors

Ok but, them <3 I love what they did for each other. Stiles was able to help Malia connect to her humanity and other people. He never tried to isolate her in their relationship and encouraged her growth. Malia offered Stiles the emotional support he never asked for. She defended him, fought for him, and loved him fiercely. Stiles needed that so much after season 3. I think they were a love that wasn’t meant to last, but the impact of it was forever. I wish we’d gotten to see a real end for them where they agreed that they needed to grow as individuals but would always still care.

Liam x Hayden: Three’s a Pattern

These two’s characterization stopped whenever they had storylines together. Their relationship was built on Scallison references. Hayden’s character could have been interesting, but they never really gave her a moment to shine. Liam has the worst plots when they revolved around her. Cute couple, poor writing.

Derek x Braeden: Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girl Boss

Derek deserves to be happy so much. Kate and Jennifer were just... jeez. Him and Braeden were cute and deserved more screen time. I think her intensity allowed for Derek to let go of control a bit more comfortably. Let Derek Be Soft. Anyway, love them.

Corey x Mason: Gotta Have That Rep TM

These two could have been cute if they were shown for more than two seconds at a time. I highkey forget Corey even existed all the time. Kinda just felt like a relationship to fill TW’s gay quota.

Jackson x Ethan: The Callback

Honestly? Loved them. Loved the chemistry. Loved the dynamic. Best twist. I know it was probably written in like that because Colton came out during his time away from the show, but it absolutely fit his character. Jethan is top tier.

Melissa x Chris: BAMF Parent Duo

Ok, so like, Melissa deserved this plot. She deserved someone to care about her. However... what the hell? Chris? In canon, his wife died like 2-ish years prior? His daughter died 1 year prior?? Is Chris really in a position to pursue a new relationship?? Also, like, Scott and Allison dated and loved each other up to her death. Kinda weird to have their parents hook up. I don’t hate it, but I don’t ship it…?

Scott x Malia: Lead up? What’s lead up?

These two came out of nowhere I stg. Like, 6B really tried to tell us this was something that had been slowly developing in the background? Also, I understand that they are their own people, adults, and completely in charge of their own romantic pursuits: but did Scott seriously never call Stiles? Like, Malia wasn’t just his first girlfriend. She was his first. Like, dude that’s your best friend?? Not even a head’s up? No, ‘hey would this bother you?’ Oof. Plus Malia was way too chaotic for Scott. She existed in gray morality that always prioritized her immediate circle, and Scott was a very black/white type of heroism. I just didn’t feel like they fit.

Non-Canon:

Scott x Stiles: Childhood Best Friends

Ya, sorry, I don’t ship Sciles at all. I get it. Like, I totally understand the ship, and I mean no judgment at all. I just see them as friends. I really value good male friendships in media because I feel like we don’t get enough, and I always liked these two.

Stiles x Derek: Enemies to Lovers. 100k. Angst. Hurt/Comfort.

God these two really are what fanfiction was made for. I could write a much longer discussion about Sterek, and I probably will eventually. I’ll try to keep this brief. These two weren’t always on the same side, but their approach was the same. They were very similar at their core. Plus, wow the chemistry. This should have been canon. Jeff’s a coward.

Allison x Lydia: Powerful.

This ship is so great. They really had a great dynamic, and a romantic plot would have easily fit the established narrative. Lydia’s confidence in herself and Allison’s confidence in her own abilities crossing over to each other because that’s what the other lacked? Iconic.

Danny x Jackson: He Gets Him

Danny really saw Jackson for everything he was and still cared. I wished we’d gotten to see more of them. I  want more background with Jackson’s eventual coming out and his friendship with Danny. Like, they ended up dating the same guy. What did Ethan have to say about that??

Stiles x Jackson: Bastards

Ok these two had a super fun dynamic. The asshole-energy between them was, great. The snark was always so entertaining.

Melissa x Noah: Family

How were these two not endgame? Their sons were practically brothers already. They had amazing chemistry. The flirting? Not to mention, their timeline would have made way more sense. Missed opportunity.

Chris x Peter: The Opposite of Love is Indifference, Not Hate

Ok so like, this was definitely one of those ships that I had absolutely no knowledge of before I was pretty into the fandom. Like, this was not something I would have guessed just after watching the show. That being said; my god the chaos alone…

Scott x Isaac: The Disaster Duo

Okay ya I love these two. Two dumb asses who act like idiot puppies. Such a fun dynamic. Plus?? Chemistry??? Hellooo

Scott x Allison x Isaac: Three Heads Are Better Than One

This ship is definitely one of my personal favorites. I very rarely poly-ship. I just feel like most of them are just love triangles with an ‘easy solution’, when two of them have no real connection. That is so not the case here. I feel like all of them have such great chemistry with each other. They also have a great dynamic as a group. Season 3A was really just Scallisaac rights.

Stiles x Isaac: I Hate You, jk…Not Really

Ok I loved their banter, but I really just don’t see this ship. Idk, I don’t personally ship it. Would have loved to see their friendship develop more tho.

Erica x Allison: Duo that would stab you with a stiletto

I don’t ship it, but I do wish we’d seen them become friends. I feel like they had a very artificial ‘girls fighting over a boy’ dynamic? They could have been such a badass duo.

Stiles x Erica: Batman x Catwoman

Ok I’m not sure exactly how to express my feelings for these two so bare with me. OMG I love their dynamic so much, and they are sooo cute. Their energy? Amazing. Chemistry? Great. History? It’s there and has so much potential. 10/10. Love them. But, no, I don’t ship it lol. Just really love their friendship, but with the underlying history of crushes.

Boyd x Erica: Was This Not Canon?

How can anyone not love Berica? Ugh they are adorable. These two deserved so much better.

Boyd x Cora: Survivors

Honestly I don’t really see it? Like they definitely had a connection, but it never felt romantic. I really feel like they just had to lean on each other and bond to make it through captivity, and it just lasted.

Boyd x Erica x Cora: The Pack

I literally learned this was a ship a couple days ago. Similar feelings towards this as Bora, but with the added hesitancy of we never actually saw Erica and Cora interact.

Cora x Stiles: Slow Build Up

These two were clearing being lined up to be a thing before Cora ended up leaving. I can’t say I’m disappointed they never happened. Kinda felt like they just wanted to straight-code Sterek.

Cora x Lydia: Mean Lesbians

Not much interaction to actually go off of, but yes I 100% support. They have very different approaches to problems, which is fun. Very ‘opposites attract’.

Malia x Kira: “Maybe you could date the coyote?”

Another one of my favorites!! They really complimented each other. Also, how full circle would they have been? They were introduced in back-to-back episodes. Malia stalking her as a coyote? The line from Kira’s dad about dating it? It would have been so funny if that ended up happening.

Malia x Lydia: Beauty and the Beast, but make it wlw

These two were fun. I liked their friendship, but I don’t really ship it. Though, rip Stiles that would have been hilarious.

Parrish x Lydia: The Cop and The Minor

Must I say more? Like, Parrish’s character, so sweet and big rule follower, did not make sense for what went down with Lydia. I love Parrish, but the dynamic just felt off. It didn’t feel consistent with the rest of his characterization.

Parrish x Stiles: The Cop and The Minor, but gay?

Ok, same reasoning as above, but also they had absolutely no connection romantically.

Scott x Theo / Stiles x Theo: Sometimes The Villain is Hot

Ok I’ve put these together because I have the same opinion for both. I don’t ship it. Neither had any rebuilding of trust, and Theo really hurt both of them. I just don’t really think they work.

Mason x Liam: Sciles Puppy Pack Edition

Similar to my feeling about Sciles, I just don’t ship these two. They had a good friendship, from the little we saw of it.

Theo x Liam: Anchors 2: Electric Boogaloo

Another personal favorite! I really don’t even understand why this didn’t go canon?? The elevator scene was just, so intense. They helped each other grow in 6B, and I really loved their dynamic. They should have hooked up.

Ello, I would really love a ship if that’s okay! I’m a Virgo sun, Leo moon and cancer rising. I’m about 5’8 with long brown hair that goes all the way down my back with hazel eyes that sometimes look more like honey brown in the right light. I can be extremely introverted until I’m comfortable with the group I’m in and then my true colors show and I always try to cheer people up. I want to think, I want to have to watch it over and over and get new bits of information I missed each time. I do enjoy reading every now and then but I really appreciate when people are able to bring a vision to life.

When I love I love hard, platonically and romantically. I give my everything to make sure the people in my circle are happy and supported. Sometimes I give my everything too much and never really know how to ask for it in return, but even in my darkest mental moments I make sure my friends have me for support. I’ve been alone so many times in my life that I don’t want anyone to ever feel that way. So even if it drains me completely I will be there for you. I will love you and I will care for you.

Because: I think Danny would really make you feel loved. You spend so much time making sure the people around you feel loved and he would do that very same thing for you. He would constantly be checking in with you to make sure you're taking care of yourself because he wouldn't want you to forget to love yourself. I think Danny can relate to being the 'mom friend' of the group but I also think the two of you would balance each other nicely, both of you keeping the other grounded when needed and reminding the other to have fun when that is needed too.

Scenario:

You plopped down onto Danny's couch with a huff, hanging up your phone and placing it next to where you sat

It had been a stressful day

One of your closest friends was having a bad mental health day and you were trying your hardest to be there for her

You had been on the phone with her for the last hour reminding her how much you loved her and how amazing she was

When you hung up the phone, you felt confident that she was going to be okay but you were still sad for her

She was in a rut and you wished more than anything that you could help her out of it

You were too far away to go to her but you'd keep your phone next to you all night, ringer on, just in case she needed to hear your voice again

Danny had kept his distance while you were on the phone, not wanting to get in the way or intrude

When he heard you say your final goodbyes, he emerged from the kitchen with two mugs of tea

"How is she?" he asked with genuine concern in his voice

You explained what she was going through but assured him that she would be okay

He placed a mug on the coffee table in front of you and sat his down next to it

"Here, sit in front of me," he said motioning for you to sit on the floor in front of where he was moving to sit on the couch

You obliged and sat with your back resting against the couch, his legs on either side of you

He ran his fingers through your hair once before placing his hands on your shoulders and squeezing

His hands worked through the tension sitting in your shoulders and neck

There was a dull pain as a result of the force he was using but it was overshadowed by how good his hands felt on you

Danny was always there for you, the same way you were there for your friends. He was your rock, always making sure you took care of yourself as well and making sure to take of you when you wouldn't

As his thumbs rubbed circles into your skin, he leaned down to speak

"You're such a good friend. She's lucky to have you."

He placed a kiss on your cheek before adding, "and so am I."

wow ,  just  wow.        as  of  october  7th ,  2020  it  has  officially  been   one  year   since  i  launched  jackie’s  original  blog.  now ,  her  concept  as  a  whole  began  much ,  much  earlier.  july  23rd ,  2019  to  be  exact.  i  knew  i  wanted  to  delve  into  the  world  of  stephen  king ,  i  knew  that  i  wanted  to  do  something  different ,  i  knew  that  i  wanted  to  take  a  novel  that  i’d  always  loved  with  characters  i  always  loved ,  &  give  them  life  through  someone  else’s  story.  ariel  “ jackie ”  torrance  was  the  product  of  that.  i   did  not   ever  think  i’d  get  off  the  ground  with  her ,  as  she’s  a  female  original  character  &  the  rpc  can  be . . .  well ,  the  rpc.  but  thanks  to  some  pretty  awesome  people ,  she’s  taken  on  such  a  life  of  her  own  with  eight  original  arcs  spanning  four  decades  of  her  life.  she  has  such  a  detailed  biography  that  only  writing  out   five   of  those  has  the  word  count  at  just  over  6,000  words.

she’s  truly  my  favorite  brainchild  out  of  writing  for  twelve  years  &  i’ve  met  so  many  amazing  people  while  writing  her.  so  many  amazing  people  that  have  pushed  me  to  go  farther  when  i  was  ready  to  throw  in  the  towel  on  her.  i  don’t  know  that  she  &  this  blog  would  be  around  today  had  it  not  been  for  the  lovely  beans  i’ve  met  along  the  way  &  continue  to  express  their  admiration  for  her  character.  so  i  wanted  to  make  this  post  as  a   thank  you.   thank  you  for  listening  to  my  3  am  rambles  about  the  tiniest  headcanons.  thank  you  for  enabling  her  impulsive  &  reckless  behavior  at  times  so  that  she  has  to  be  put  in  uncomfortable  situations  to  grow.  thank  you  for  always  believing  in  me  &  my  ability  to  tell  a  story  even  when  life  has  thrown  me  the   wildest   of  curveballs  &  i  don’t  get  to  be  as  active  as  i  once  was.

I know a lot of your main ships but are there are “minor” ones? Also, do you have any crack ships of your own characters? Like any that will NEVER be canon but you kinda ship them anyway?

for the other being duology, there’s Esmerelda and Hazel who are... kinda the only couple in the entire book because Nathan is ace aro, Doll doesn't have normal relationships, cole is a vegetable, and Creep is lonely. In the second book, people will probably ship Doll and Blake, and i semi do, but they have like. Hannibal and Will Graham kinda relationship, like ‘this isn't even remotely healthy but we are both extremely fucked up so who gives a damn’ sorta vibe. For crack ships i’ll be honest i really love Creep and Nathan, but not romantically, i’d just love them to be in a QPR (and who knows they might one day once Nathan stops being suicidal as shit) so i guess that’s crack? 

in other stories... i ship Morty/Oliver/Ben so fuckin hard but Oliver refuses to be in a relationship but if he didn’t he 100% would no hesitations and morty and ben will be, at some point when they get their shit together so that’s not exactly crack...

 Oh wait, i do have one crack ship that’s still not exactly crack level but whatever - Vincent and Kier. they are close friends by the end by having experienced the same vein of trauma tho not the same by a long shot, and they bond over that, and also Vincent’s one of the only people to speak up for Kier when Tempest and Stardust continue to exclude them. This is not really their fault admittedly, Kier’s extensive drug history has gotten them hurt and other people killed before so no exactly is mad that they have a hard time trusting Kier, but they are working on being sober and they need to try again, which Vincent argues for. They wouldn’t really be a good couple, Kier is a bit too, how do you say, violent, chaotic, and actually sorta insane for Vincent’s anxiety and need for stability and quiet, but still, kinda ship it a little. Kier does end up with Dinah, who helps them get sober, and i adore their dynamic so i’m not exactly itching to change the book of course. I swear the two are just like Dinah holding a very enraged poodle on a leash going ‘no we don’t torture him for looking at me weird. no Kier we don’t steal i don't care if it smells good. no Kier, if you try to get more drugs i will call your sponsor and she will ream you alive. now sit and tell me if my makeup looks ok. she first met them when they saved her from a hate crime and she took one look at them and said ‘you’re coming to my apartment and i’m making you pancakes, come on’ and Kier just went with it. Oh and Dusty’s brother Danny has a wife, Madison and they have a very cute daughter named Anna Grace who Dusty adores.

𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐄𝐄: Flashback

There is beauty in the way that you decide to love someone. Love in itself can be chaotic, tragic even at times, yet all the while worth every second. Sometimes there is a certain love that sticks with you; bound to your heart… never allowing you to forget the magnificent feeling it held. It can be something so grand, that at the time, it is hard to notice completely. You can take it for granted, and use the love as a crutch until there is nothing left but a broken bone. Only this time, the pain you feel is something much worse, more hollow… the taste of sweet love will be gone forever, gone into the universe never to return to your touch. Desperate hands may reach; only to slip through meaningless air of hollow feelings. How did it get like this? How did a world of passion and aspiring hope turn to something so cold?

To answer that question, I would have to go back to the very beginning to where it all started. There were no bright flashing lights, or signs to tell myself this was the right moment. It was not fate, but rather a moment where everything somehow seemed to fall into place. The right time, the right people scenario that happens every so often to two unfortunate souls. The two souls casted for this fatal heartbreak were that of myself and Elle Greene. Myself, the lead singer to an infamous rock group, while she was a no name up and coming actress. From the beginning to end, we both knew our lives would never be the same. One for the better, and one for the worst. The only thing we could mutually set upon ourselves in agreement was that in the beginning, we loved one another. From that very first night, we knew it was love.

I would never be able to quite place that love again— no matter how hard I tried. In the beginning, I never knew I was a man capable of romantic intentions. Sure, there were girls who caught my eye… but they never found a place in my life more than the bed for a night or two. Each beat of my heart brought forth sexual pleasure and desire. The mind of a boy could not quite compare to that of a man. Women were objects; bodies and lust that I craved from the moment I opened my eyes, to the very end as they closed. Their unique taste brought me a new high that even the drugs and alcohol could not compare to. What was more damning than that of a naked woman lying with me in bed? I never wanted to picture myself in any other place. No heaven would ever be as sweet or secure.

The room was filled with people from places that all oozed of money. The high elegance of the air filled my nose, telling my brain that I did not belong there. My manager said it would be a good public appearance, to give the people something to talk about. A rough around the edges singer at a white tie event… what could possibly go wrong? It was a sick joke to someone— someone other than the people of the charity event that all turned to look at me with peculiar eyes from the moment I walked into the room. The whispers started, slipping from one end of the room to the other. It was clear I did not belong there— or was I quick just to set myself aside? To allow the high moments of anxiety to take over what little had to do with me at all? I could not say. The quick aid of a drink or two would do away with any doubts I had shortly.

“How much longer are we going to have to be here, babe?”

My eyes drifted away from the gowns and tuxedos to the woman by my side: Cazzie Maylynn. She was an actress— but what people would call of adult films. We were nothing serious, only using each other for a quick fuck every now and again, but to the public eye they were a high profile item. The blonde did not do much for conversation, her goals mainly being that of how to further her career into more professional aspects. It had been the only reason I wanted to bring her. I knew she was a porn star, there was no hiding that fact, but she had a dream for herself. If there was any way I could have helped her, I did not see as to why I could not try. It also gave me a reason not to be the only outcast in the room.

The faces of empty hearts and dreams circled all around me, pretending that somehow I was the strange one. A man who did not belong. What was it to walk around endlessly with no real drive in your heart? That was all I could see in their faces. Lost souls wandering, searching for the feelings they once held onto so deeply when all of their dreams started to come true. The only difference between myself and the men and suits was that I still lived my dream. Each night I could go out and fill my void and know my heart was content enough to sleep through the night. How many here could claim the same shit?

“Can you stop talking for once?”

Cazzie's eyes widened, shocked at my careless remark and the even more careless look in my eyes. Was I being an ass? Sure. I would apologize for it later and she would forgive me— the thought dawned on me as she turned herself away and stalked off in six inch heels towards the bar. Hell in heels could only be the one thing to describe her. Our time together would be as short lived as any relationship I had in the past several years. No woman ever got too close— just as I preferred it to be. Normal people could hardly handle my mood swings and unique methods of affection.

Already nursing a drink in my hand, I turned away from the bar and set my sights towards one of the nearest exits I could find. A lone bathroom would do or even an abandoned room without the watchful eyes of elite people around me. The alcohol really wasn't doing it for me tonight. In the breast pocket of my tuxedo hid the contents of a party favor a little more suitable for my liking. One line disappearing would alter my mood for the night; maybe then I could pay more attention to Cazzie and really give these people something to talk about.

I had already set my sights on a side door of the hotel which I was sure would lead to some sort of enclosed exclusion when I felt the hand of my producer reach for my shoulder.

“Oz! Not so fast! Where do you think you're going?”Danny Chadwick infamously made a name for himself at the Record Label for bringing in up and coming acts that we're sure to make money. I was a shoe in to be the next greatest thing for rock music; someone to bring in attention and green for as far as the eye could see. Little did good ole Dan and everyone else know that I was going to be a lot more trouble than they originally expected.

“I was just getting out for some fresh air, man. Hey!” Calm, cool, and collected. I wrapped an arm around my ‘friend’ in a casual embrace with a familiar smile. The energy around them held nothing but a fake aftertaste. I couldn't have given two shits about Dan or anyone else here— I knew what I was to them and how my piece in the puzzle was going to be used until no longer useful. “Who’s your friend?”

Who was I really kidding? The blonde was one of the first things my eyes noticed when Dan made his way over. I made sure to keep the calm and collected attitude, but my gaze couldn't stop itself from wandering her way. A magnetic pull that felt far too dangerous for my liking. Every few seconds her green eyes would flash upwards towards me; damning my mind for all eternity for what I knew was not mine to have... yet. Was I insane? Maybe. But when has that ever hurt anyone?

“Well, that's what I was coming over here for. Ozzy, I'd like you to meet Elle Greene.”

At the mention of her name, the blonde instantly gave me a smile that felt far too secretive. A world of mysteries hid behind those cherry red lips wrapped inside of a stunning black cut out dress. I knew why she wore it— hell, she must have wanted to be the center of attention. Right now, right here, she had about one hundred and fifty percent of mine. I couldn't even hide it, looking her over from head to toe before finally settling back on the hidden forests that were set deep within her gaze. Reaching a hand out, I offered what might have been my most polite behavior. "Elle, it's a pleasure to meet you. The names Luke."

The curl on my mouth wasn't a smile, but a complete twist of seduction. There was a mystery lying within her, and I couldn't quite uncover the truth. Her eyes could never quite meet mine yet her facade was nothing but polite. Was I somehow fooling myself— thinking she could sense the same spark I had? A spark. The thought turned my stomach over and I did my best not to roll myself. This wasn't a spark, this was full blown attraction at its finest. Human nature, two people ( or well shit, just one ) who were drawn by natural instinct.

Her mouth opened, daring to speak before Dan cut into her stolen words: "Hey, show her around would you? I've got a few more people I need to talk to right now. I know you'll make her feel right at home."

Something in the way he spoke left me knowing he didn't walk up to me with Elle for no reason. Dan was a man who constantly had wheels turning within his head. Whatever he had going, I wasn't sure if I wanted to play with. But when danger looked that good? I didn't know if I could resist. He gave both of us a final farewell before drifting off into the sea of people. My eyes turned to Cazzie, who was still at the bar now being entertained by two other monkeys in suits and I no longer before a sense of guilt about ignoring her. She'd be fine here tonight without me.

The mere seconds passed before I looked back to Elle— finally for the first time she was able to speak. "Well, it was nice meeting you Luke, but I think I better be going." She gave a shrug and dismissive smile. I knew what it meant— but I'd be damned if I let it slip away so easily.

"Hey, where are you going?" I questioned, finally allowing a smile to move her way. I didn't have to be charm all of the time, a voice in the back of my head reminded me. The role of douchebag didn't always need to be played.

"What makes you think you know me so well?" I finally cut her off, feeling a bit pissed off at her words. Were they wrong? No. Did I live up to almost every terrible thing people thought about me? Probably. But hell, at least I wouldn't be that rude to a total stranger. Looking at her, I knew I caught her by surprise. Whatever anger lighted in my mind, I was quick to put out. What was it going to do anyways? I wasn't nearly drunk or high enough to go down that road.

Her expression remained in a state of neutral— unshaped by any regret of what she said or any means of taking it back. She was bold as fuck, I'd give her that. Hell, I still kind of liked it. "Fine, Lucas. Maybe I am wrong." Shit, the surprise on my face couldn't have been harder to hide. "But that doesn't mean I am going to find out tonight. It was nice meeting you."

"Would you ever want to find out?" I pressed, knowing the window of her time would be short lived. What the fuck was wrong with me? This girl had insulted me more in the last five minutes than any girl had in years. Maybe that was what I liked— she was real... honest. Not a fake shit show.

"Maybe. Maybe not." As she started to walk away, face still hardened with intent, her eyes looked back at me with only a hint of a smile as she drifted into the sea of people. I could see the flash of green in the back of my mind like a green light in the sea of darkness. What the hell was I doing? I didn't know. But for whatever reason, I knew I had to know more. She was the realest thing I had come across in years, the only heart and mind I somehow wanted to know more of. Elle Greene.

Title: Adapt and flourish

(that is the start of the re-counting of all the stories i’ve been writing. this one is the first)

Description: Years and years after the death of Tony Stark, the Earth faces new enemies — so called Colonizers, humans from another timeline and dimension, who are trying to enslave everyone in their attempts to power their machines. Goverments are destroyed, and the only opposing force that is still there, is a large group of fanatics, who are trying to create as many mutant soldiers as possible. A small group of said mutants, one of whom is coincidently the only daughter of Natasha Romanoff, escape the claws of the Opposers, but end up in the middle of nowhere, without much protection in the world that is being drained and enslaved by the newcomers.

So they decide to do the only thing that could fix it all — to find a way to the reality, in which this all did not happen. Only that it doesn’t go as smoothly as planned.

Actual summary: a small group of teenagers(18-26 years old) are going back in time from near-apocalyptic state to New York of 2005-2010. Main-main characters are Leli (said daughter of Natasha) and Harper (what a badass, I fucking love her), but we have five new people in total, each a character of their own, with their own life and history. Their main goal is to find people responsible for the coming of Colonizers, meanwhile protecting the NYC and not getting under the radar of not-even-formed-yet Avengers.

Tags(kinda): SLOW BURN, hello. Romance, age difference. OC characters are hella badasses, but vulnerable in their own way and not invincible. Plot is extremely important and I will break the original MCU plot and timeline because I hate repeating stuff. Also, TENSION. Like a lot of unresolved sexual tension. Jealousy. Lots of that shit. Basically forbidden romance. Therefore guilt trips from Stark’s side even before the relationship. Lots of psychological problems from both sides, mentions of PTSD, depression, suicide attempts.

Also, for anyone concerned:

Leli is 19 when she meets Stark for the first time, who’s 42 at the time(first Avengers Movie). Now add the time they’ll need to get to the relationship point. A lot of time.

(Possible Soulmates-AU: Soulmarks are rare, the majority of them are romantic. They are on your body your whole life, but have a gray/black color until your soulmate is born or after they’d died. There are no known cases of soulmates not ever meeting, so the marks are usually seen as a blessing. Tony Stark has one, but it just never got its color back. Could be used to bring the characters together and make the whole thing less of a slow burn, and also could be used to add the sweet aNgSt to Tony’s character. Not sure about it yet though, not a big soulmate-AU fan.)

Pretty empathic, I would say, albeit only to others. Can’t understand shit about her own feelings and problems, so she does her best to aVoiD tHeM. (what a responsible human being)

Powers: Illusions and great eyesight.

Harper ‘Harp/Harpy’ Jayson

Character: neutral, sarcastic and somewhat pessimistic, even though she’ll tell you it’s called being a realist. Can and will rip your eyes out if you piss her off. Very loyal friend. Impulsive, gets bitchy or explodes pretty often. She is also really, really, really fucking cool and I love her. I’m not biased towards any of my OCs, no, not at all.

Powers: inhumane strength and ability to control air around her, which she’d mastered to its fullest potential(not fullest control, I warn you, she is not invincible).

Powers: foreseeing/intuition, healing. She also has a very enchanting singing voice, which she can turn into a weapon by screaming - knocks people out. Knocks her out too.

Tell us about your current project(s) – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?

For the past 4 years, I have been developing a young adult book series that’s inspired by my love for Cartoon Teenage Superheroes I grew up with such as Danny Phantom, Jake Long American Dragon, and Juniper Lee. The project is overall about a teenage girl who was blessed by a godlike spirit to be their champion and maintain the balance between the world of the living and dead. So she is like a grim reaper...with mermaid powers. However, she isn’t helping with having to always have to be a strong warrior and craves a life of normalcy. She meets this group of people who help her get what she hopes for. The main purpose of the project is to show how important it is to connect with others as well as oneself. The progress of the whole thing has been fun and I plan on actually getting to write it very very soon!

2. Tell us about what you’re most looking forward to writing – in your current project, or a future project.

The part where the main character confesses her love and it’s not a romantic confession at all. I want to explore all kinds of love with this project. 

3. What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway)

The day that the main character first met her childhood friend. They both met when they were pretty young and had the most chaotic sibling-like relationship. Imagine a 6-year-old girl roasting a grumpy emo teenager.

11. What do you envy in other writers?

For some writers, I envy their beautiful flow with words or having the confidence of just throwing caution to the wind and writing whatever. But the one thing I envy the most is Haruichi Furudate’s f*cking character development, how everything and everyone practically matters in the story no matter how minor they are, their usage of symbolism, and the meaning behind the series! And no, I will never shut up about Haikyuu!! It has the best story-telling I ever witness in any form of media.

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

The main premise of Book 1 is very much a Little Mermaid-inspired plot. The series overall focus on the concept that with or without being part of the supernatural, everyone has their own tools in this world to survive. To stay afloat. And that’s fine but going through your journey in life or death alone can be hard. Connecting with something you love or having a bond with someone could help make your journey feel less lonely.

My favorite character development is between either the dry-humored older sister figure of the group learning how to depend on people or the relationship-obsessed character who lacks their own identity learns that they need to define themselves on their own and not rely on the validation from others. But my favorite relationship development is the platonic relationship between two black girls who are part of the LGBTQ.

I am going to be hidden references that are referred to Danny Phantom, Raven Cycle, and Bleach because I am bitter and they could have been better so I am going to use them for my story. I hate wasted potential. For symbolism? I am going to use a lot of nature-based symbolism, I guess. Animals, insects, flowers, and space. But the key symbolism is Nessa’s series development compared to the ocean.

Heaven’s feel vs Matt/Elektra

Oh boy. I really don't know where I'm going with this, other than to get it off my chest, but here we go. An analysis between Fate/Stay Night and Marvel's Daredevil, specifically about the Heaven's Feels route and Matt/Elektra.

Spoilers and lots of feelings ahead. You’ve been warned. x)

At this point if you Googled it or know both series you're probably wondering what I'm smoking. One is a grounded vigilante story, the other is a high school magical anime. Technically both couldn't be further away from each other, but by coincidence or not, the more I think about them the more similarities I find.

THE HERO

Matt: That’s what I was trying to do, was trying to help people.

Shirou: Maybe I got something wrong, but it doesn't matter because the thought of wanting to help others definitely isn't wrong.

For those unfamiliar with Fate Stay/Night, the story follows a seemingly normal high school student who is dragged into a mage war for the Holy Grail, an artifact capable of making any wish come true.

Matt and Shirou despite being in very different stories, share some strong similarities, mostly in their drive/motive. They both want for their own -perhaps selfish- reason to save people and be heroes. They're also orphans by tragedy whose view of the world is shaped by a mentor/father figure who ends up being the cause of a lot of their suffering.

They also have a lack of self-worth that more often than not translates into a willingness to put themselves in harm's way for the sake of others. This quality of self-sacrifice, and their drive to uphold justice at all cost is perhaps what makes their path so similar.

THE HEROINES

Another similarity both series share are the heroines. In Fate the hero goes through three stories in which he ends up with three different girls. It's hard to explain without going into too much detail, but each of them represents different values and levels of acceptance of himself. 

Surprisingly enough this parallels Matt's own romantic journey quite well. 

The first girl is a representation of his ideal. She herself is a self-sacrificing person who lived her life for the sake of her kingdom. She's the definition of knighthood and the values the hero wants to live up to. Through her path the hero becomes the savior he wants to be, much like how Matt becomes Daredevil with help from Claire. In this path the hero doesn't get the girl, as this is all about becoming their ideal self, a true selfless hero capable of giving up even love for the sake of others.

The second girl is not as lawful as the first, or as chaotic as the third. She's a middle point that mirrors the hero's own true flawed self. She's also a companion to him in all the stories, whether as a friend or a lover. Through this path the hero comes to realize his own darkness and weakness, which stands in the way of achieving his ideal. In Fate the hero gets the girl, but she's not the main goal. She's his partner and support in his struggle to achieve his ideals.

Then we have the third girl. She represents the darkness the hero wants to conquer. A girl of quick smiles and gentle manners that hides behind a mask her hate/disdain towards the world. A hate that was mostly cultivated by her adoptive grandfather, who saw her as a tool for his goal. Through this path the hero accepts his own darkness and the selfish desire to save the girl above all, throwing away the ideals that caused him pain. 

Sounds familiar, no?

The third is definitely the one that shares the most similarities, and that's why Elektra and Sakura are the focus of this. 

THE JOURNEY

There's so much conceptual common ground between the series and, particularly, with The Defenders. A lot of it was, in my opinion, handled better in Fate Stay/Night. This isn't surprising, Fate is all about the hero's journey and his relationship with the heroine, while Defenders had a lot more going on. There was just not enough time to work the relationships.

Both heroines start their journey with their grandfathers, both were adopted into a family they don't love. Due to the way they're raised, and their eventual destiny, both see the world with disdain. And for both the only redeeming thing the world has to offer is the hero they love.

All they want is to be loved in a world that has showed them no kindness. 

All the heroes want is to save them from their fate, which eventually makes them the villain.

And this all leads to the hero "dying" for them.

Now that we see the similarities, let's explore some of the common moments.

FRIENDS TO ENEMIES TO ALLIES

Out of the three heroines, the third is the one that has known the hero the longest. They met years before the story begins and their happy uncomplicated days progressively get darker as their story unravels. Eventually the heroine's own destiny puts them on opposite sides of a conflict with both of them unwilling to fight each other. 

Then the hero pledges to help the heroine fight a common enemy, even if it comes at a high personal price.

THE SACRIFICE

Elektra: They have nothing now. I took everything. I know now what it feels to be good.

Sakura: Thank you for everything, Shirou. It might be too late, but I can't cause any more trouble than I already have.

One of the most beautiful moments for both Elektra and Sakura is when they decide to sacrifice themselves for the hero's sake. Both of them are aware of the potential danger they represent, but neither would willingly give up their life for the sake of saving strangers. Self-sacrifice is not part of their nature, and they don't hold any love for the people that need saving.

Their drive to stop the enemy (before they become one themselves) is rooted in two things.The desire to protect the hero, who won't let them go even at the cost of himself. And the satisfaction of spoiling the plans of those who hurt them.

It's the ultimate gesture of vengeance and love. It's also ironically, the turning point of their story, as they fail in their goal, and are awakened as true monsters.

TRUTH

Stick: The girl I trained, the woman you loved she ain’t there anymore. When the time comes, whatever is living inside the body of Elektra Natchios is gonna have to die.

Zouken: Once Sakura’s consciousness is gone, the catastrophe from ten years ago will repeat. If you want to hold your father’s ideals and save everyone by vanishing evil, then no one but Sakura is your enemy.

I really love these moments, and how similar yet different they're. 

The hero is confronted by the grandfather figure and told the truth he had been avoiding, the heroine will bring chaos if allowed to live. While Matt falls into negation at Stick's words, until he’s unable to deny it, Shirou falls directly into despair. Both know that perhaps it's a mercy for everyone to stop the heroine before it's too late. Saving the innocent is what they'd pledged to do all this time, but the reality that hurting someone they love is the way to do so is something they’re unable to accept.

STRUGGLE

Shirou attempts to kill Sakura.

Matt grieves over Stick.

One of the moments or feelings I wish The Defenders had explored more is Matt’s own struggle to facing Elektra as an enemy. We only ever see him in a state of denial or desperation, and the only acknowledgement we get from him about the death that Elektra's caused, are the few seconds in which he grieves Stick and swears to save Danny. 

In contrast we have a full scene dedicated to Shirou contemplating on killing Sakura for the sake of the people she will undoubtedly kill. This scene is so powerful, showing Shirou's internal struggle between his love and his values. You can see the pain in his face, as his ideals slowly crumbling. He can’t save everyone, someone will die, and he’d rather it be strangers than the heroine. 

Granted, Matt’s own nature would never allow him to consider such an extreme method. Shirou has always been more willing to go to the extremes, but we have seen Matt mulling over right and wrong before. Showing more of his struggle, more of his pain at the face of Elektra’s destruction, would have only enriched the story.   

RESOLUTION

Shirou: I'm not going to kill her. I'm going to save her.

Matt: No, I'm gonna meet you out there. I know I can get through her.

Despite everything he knows and the damage the heroine has already caused, the hero resolves to save them at all costs. It is in a way their only choice at this point in the story. It's the path they have chosen to walk, even by betraying their own justice. To make both their sacrifice worth it, they need to succeed and save the heroine.

The apparent answer to their dilemma comes as a form of self-sacrifice. For Matt it's staying behind to try to reason with the Black Sky, for Shirou it's using Archer's power -which will consume his body- to destroy the curse that Sakura is holding.

In the end both stories diverge as Fate comes to a satisfactory conclusion for the hero, while Matt fails to save Elektra and goes to grieve her in the coming season.

Ocean’s 11 ~ Cosmos Troupe 2019

Ocean’s was great! I loved it so much! I thought the previous two versions were fine, but never cared for either enough to go back and watch them again. Turns out if you adore every single person in the troupe putting it on, the ensemble cast makes it a home run. 

If I remember correctly, there are some noticeable differences between the Hoshigumi and Hanagumi versions. This was a slightly tweaked and polished Hanagumi version. The show does a great job of featuring a lot of people; nearly everyone gets something fun to do (it’s consequently not the best taidan for Akkii or Riku, but if it wasn’t their last I’d really say it’s good for everybody). The scenes change quickly (and flow a lot better than I remember), so even if a given person’s appearances are short they’re typically fairly frequent. I’m not terribly pleased that the prolific use of projections seems to be a continuing theme in Takarazuka, but Ocean’s actually used them WELL, and with all the hacking/security/surveillance going on, and the flashing lights and artificiality of Las Vegas, it actually makes sense. 

There are three (3!) major ad lib scenes that are different every day, something I didn’t realize ahead of time having only seen the previous versions on DVD:

Tess walking in on Benedict and his lackeys trying to physically threaten the Evergreen people into handing over the rights to their non-profit and Benedict having to lie about what they were doing

Saul giving everyone a pre-caper “acting lesson” in which Susshii says something ridiculous and the rest of the eleven have to remember it and mimic her in unison

Rusty pretending to be “Dr. Johnson” to cart Saul off after the fake heart attack that serves as a distraction during the actual heist (for those who can read Japanese, one brave twitter user is keeping track of all the Dr. Johnson ad libs)

...and these made me really look forward to seeing the show again and again. I probably could have gone every day and been thoroughly entertained. 

Danny Ocean is the most boring vanilla blank canvas of a character and requires the actress playing him to really bring everything herself. Fortunately, Makaze and her devastatingly attractive body could have stood in the corner in those open-necked suits without saying a word for 3 hours and I’d still have given it a 10/10. On top of that though, I thought she played him perfectly. Her sort of low-key coolness that for me has come off a bit stiff at times with some of her other top star stuff was spot on for Danny, who I fully believed was chill, aloof, and sexy enough to both pull off such an impossible robbery without a moment’s anxiety, AND stalk the woman trying to divorce him such that she was not only NOT immediately put off completely but also ultimately able to fall back in love with him. In the dream sequence that opens Act 2, when Makaze changes from serpent to prince and leaves the bouquet of flowers on Tess’s bed for her to accept whenever she’s ready, my heart clenched so bad I accidentally groaned audibly the first time I saw it. She also sang the best I’ve ever heard her sing. 

Madoka is a beautiful Tess, and above all else I was THRILLED that they finally let her have such a grown up role and that she slayed it. I had absolutely no doubt that she’d slay it; she’s a fantastic actress who as far as I can tell is only battling her round little face and height difference with Makaze when it comes to getting mature roles. But they styled her flawlessly and her dresses were to die for and she looked so fantastic I hope all concerned parties got the hint that this is fine. I want to see the two of them do something sizzling hot together (although I have to admit, dude chasing after his wife who wants so badly to divorce him IS a fun dynamic that we never really get to see in Takarazuka, unless they’re doing Ocean’s).  

I love Kiki more and more every time I see her, and while it’s hard not to be annoyed that she’s not a top star already, I will be so furious if they take her away from Soragumi; I absolutely love what they bring out of her. I think she and Makaze have a great dynamic together, and she was both cool and funny enough to make Rusty very enjoyable to watch. There wasn’t a single Dr. Johnson scene I saw that didn’t have me laughing out loud and wishing I had another ticket. One day I sat in B-seki with a group of students on a class trip, and one of them gasped すごい when she finished her finale-opening solo. Here’s a funny story from Makaze’s ochakai that I read on twitter: there is a duet between Danny and Rusty during which Rusty lights a cigarette, and apparently Koike wanted to modernize Ocean’s by giving him an IQOS instead. Makaze convinced him that was the worst idea ever and wants all Kiki fans to thank her personally.

MVP: Zun as Benedict. I suspect her interpretation might be polarizing once the world at large gets to see Ocean’s, but I loooooved it. Once upon a time there was a Japanese meme going around about what kind of date various prominent otokoyaku would bring you on, and Zun was pegged as a young, sweet, filthy rich kid who would reserve the entirety of Disneyland and then take you there. Her Benedict was like the evil version of that. I appreciated so much that she went a different direction than Beni and Daimon and played him as just a rich sleazy horrible asshole without the over-the-top comical bits—and she was STILL very funny, just as the straight man to everyone else’s ridiculous antics. She was so dark, so angry, and had such a scary glint in her eyes for such a cute little muffin; so impressively gross it was weird to see her smiling genuinely in the finale. And she’s a DAMN GOOD STAGE KISSER, astonishingly so for someone who’s yet to have a romantic lead outside of shinko and Bow Hall. I very much enjoyed her team as well—mostly Mitsuki Haruka as Taylor, Aishiro Moa as Beth, and Hoshizuki Rio as Charles, keeping things funny and chaotic. Kihou Kanata/Manase Mira were even hilarious as the bodyguards (Wakato Ritsu was a fine Bruiser, but IMO it’s pretty hard to beat Taso... and I felt a gaping hole where Fuuma Kakeru should have been).

Seiko could have carried this show by herself. For whatever reason—and I rewatched the Hanagumi version recently—I didn’t think Queen Diana, outside of being sassy, was as good of a role as it was (does the DVD fail to show a lot of her antics? Maybe. Was I doing a lousy job paying attention? Possibly). But no, Seiko was all over it, convincingly the biggest force in Vegas (and this cast). I am going to miss her so so so much. Akkii and Riku ended up with the more senior but less meaty roles of Frank and Basher respectively. While Frank is on the quieter side during most of the scenes with all the 11 except for his opening solo and arrest, I personally, for probably biased reasons, really enjoyed watching Akkii and Sora in the background, where Frank is very frequently trying to coerce Linus into getting over himself and just doing the thing already. I don’t know if this has been especially tough on Riku, but her eye bags have eye bags :( As much as I’m going to miss her, I hope she gets through this and takes a nice long rest. The Soragumi landscape is going to be so weird and different without these three. They come down for the parade together with Seiko in the middle and I got choked up every single time. 

I’m thrilled that Sora got Linus mostly from a rank standpoint; they announced Ocean’s before Aichan’s transfer to Senka and I was positive she was going to be Livingston. The role itself kind of unfortunately emphasized how tiny and behind she is in this troupe, but at the same time she was SO grumpy and SO cute. I feel bad taking pleasure in her angst but boy was she cute. She talked about how interesting it was to play someone who was struggling to overcome his own roadblocks, both as the only upperclassman to ever play this role, and also having just turned ken-10, where otokoyaku are supposed to “come of age” so to speak. And the frustration and uncertainty she put into the role was extremely palpable. As I’m used to her being a disembodied arm or a blurry image over someone’s shoulder on most DVDs, I couldn’t be happier that she finally has a whole solid handful of her very own scenes that I might actually be able to see not only in the theater. She’s closer to the middle when the otokoyaku dance too, AND she moved up a parade spot. I most definitely teared up when she came down the stairs featured between Rara and Mineri.

Moeko was SO CUTE as Livingston, and the scene where Rusty busts into Livingston’s place pretending to be an FBI agent was one of my favorites, along with the one where Danny comes to get the Malloy brothers and they mess with his face on the security camera. I’m so enamored with both Kotti and Yuuki Shion (Yuuki Shion dangerously so, YIKES; she’s like the awkward baby Sora I fell in love with reincarnated, plus she can do Komu-esque things with her legs and jump so astonishingly high). I will forever be obsessed with Susshii and how much joy and passion she pours into playing even the most crotchety old men. I don’t know what it IS about Rinkira that screams old man to the producers (other than that maybe they just need someone to do it), but I even liked her as Reuben, and Akine Hikaru as Yen a surprising amount. I always thought of Yen as a scary role that you don’t want your girl to get stuck with, and for someone prominent I guess it would be a bummer, but I don’t think I’ve ever noticed Akine Hikaru do much of anything before, so I was mostly just wide eyed at how acrobatic and good with a yo-yo she is. 

The finale is REAL good; Makaze is hot and a little sweaty and her hair is styled to make her look even sweatier. The top-star-in-a-harem-of-musumeyaku number is done in one of my favorite aesthetics, where the musumeyaku let their hair down (literally) no matter how intricately they were styled up to that point, and you can see the creases from their former pins and braids and it’s a little messy and loose and sexy which are all things I wish they’d let musumeyaku be more often, and Makaze is in the middle just like doing illegal things with her mouth and all that jazz. The otokoyaku dance is good too, and the duet dance is cute as shit (there’s a part where Makaze like boops Madoka’s nose and then Madoka pushes her like ~stop that~ and ugh). 

And speaking of ugh, the end of Act 1 where all 11 of them turn around and saunter toward the back of their stage after formulating their flawless plan put my stomach in knots, both for the sheer swagger and the overflowing love I feel for this lineup of this troupe. I know I’ve been saying this for like two years and it STILL hasn’t happened on the scale I’ve been expecting, but I can feel the transfers coming and I’m scared.

Today is Hajar Brown’s birthday! I dug deep into The Hajar archives to translate this interview that she, Danny Arcos and Vítor Blanco gave Córdoba TV about SKAM Hajar.

NAIMA: Assalamu alaikum (peace be unto you). Good night. Welcome to one more week, another program about us women. We have a show full of surprises today, truthfully, as well as a show that Laura is particularly excited about because we have very young people with us.

LAURA: Yeah, I love that sort of thing. It’s a treat being able to share the evening with these three young people. You prepared the interview, so everything we’ll tell you is a surprise for me too.

NAIMA: Yes, the truth is we always have new surprises, but beyond that, we have our usual features. We’ll talk about all the news from the past few days that are related to women. They’re all not very good news, but they must be included. And as with every show, we’ll talk about women and Islam. So we’ll be back in a few seconds.

NAIMA: We’re back and as Laura said earlier, we have three young people with us. Welcome. Hi, how are you?

HAJAR, DANNY, VÍTOR: Hi, hello.

NAIMA: Good night. We have Hajar Brown with us. Assalamu alaikum, Hajar, welcome.

HAJAR: Salam.

NAIMA: This is Danny Arcos. Welcome, Danny. And Vítor Blanco. Good, I haven’t mixed any name up.

VÍTOR: No.

NAIMA: So we have these students. They are college students who, a few months ago, if I recall correctly, started a project, which they worked very hard on. But we want to know what that project is. We’ll start with the directors, Danny and Vítor. Let’s see, tell us, because we’ve heard the story of a movie, a short film, something about Skam, something about Muslims, so tell us a bit about it. What was this project about?

DANNY: So uh, at first it came up as homework that we had for our Sociology of Communication course, in which we more or less study social representation on TV and so on. And we had homework which consisted on analyzing a show or an audiovisual project that we liked. And we chose the TV show Skam, which is a Norwegian series…

NAIMA: Yes, tell us, because we have no clue.

DANNY: Okay.

NAIMA: Because we saw Skam and it was like, it is an acronym? Or I don’t know.

DANNY: It’s like…

VÍTOR: It’s shame in Eng…

DANNY: No, in Norwegian.

VÍTOR: In Norwegian.

DANNY: So that’s it, it’s shame and it’s a teen show about a girl squad, who are all very different, but they manage to become really good friends. And one of them was a Muslim girl, called Sana. And we liked that character a lot. And besides, the show deals with teenagers in a very positive way, it’s not the typical thug, drug, sex, alcohol show, these are all topics that are kinda boring, no? They deal with it in a positive way and we decided that our project would be to create like an episode…

NAIMA: Of that show?

DANNY: Yes. That show, but adapted to Spain.

VÍTOR: To Madrid, right.

NAIMA: Makes sense. So once you saw that, you see that example of a Muslim teen, as one more character on a teen show, which is something that has yet to happen in Spain, how did you make the decision? I mean, right, we need to get in touch with a Muslim girl, how was the process of getting in touch with a Muslim girl before actually speaking with that girl?

VÍTOR: Right, we started from the point in which we had no experience whatsoever about what it’s like to be a Muslim young girl in Madrid, and so we couldn’t go in depth with a script, because we wouldn’t know what to write. So Danny knew Hajar through instagram.

DANNY: I was already a Hajar fan.

VÍTOR: Yep.

DANNY: I followed her, so I said, “well, we could talk to her and say…” Right, we have to see if she’ll reply back first, because my instagram is like, pictures of buildings and stuff like that. I said, she’s not going to reply, because I come off like a weird man and she’s gonna say no or something, but… She gave us attention.

NAIMA: Hajar, when you got that instagram message from boys you don’t know at all, like, we want to make a TV show, something about Muslim women, what did you think? Like those typical messages that we get all the time.

HAJAR: Yeah… The difference is that their message, I saw that it was more thirty lines plus, I said, “they really put work on this.” They were serious, they wanted to do this thing, and then of course, I checked his instagram, and it didn’t have any pictures of him. I didn’t know his face, I didn’t know him. But because I’m a really good stalker, I found out who he was. And then yeah, I decided to meet up with them and talk about it and more or less hear them out and see what they wanted to do, and if it wasn’t contradictory, if it was doable, then we’d do it.

NAIMA: And what was your first impression? What was the first thing you found out when you talked to Hajar?

DANNY: Yeah, we came to the meeting with some stuff written down.

VÍTOR: Yeah, both of us had, we’d done like a brainstorming of things we’d like to talk to her about, to see how they can be shown on a TV show.

NAIMA: Right, but you’d said that you had no idea what it’s like to be a young Muslim woman and…

DANNY: Right, right.

LAURA: Living in Madrid… What was the first thing she told you… Those things you didn’t know and that suddenly made everything clearer for you.

DANNY: Yeah, so we wanted, like, the things we’d already come up with, if she wanted to add something. Like, what would you like to see on TV, what do you miss in mass media? And we kind of like, agreed on stuff…

HAJAR: Yes, all three of us… More or less with the topics they brought to the table, we removed some things, we added other things that were more interesting, well, I reorganized it…

NAIMA: You were the censor there, huh?

HAJAR: Yeah, but because they were topics that were a result of ignorance, because they didn’t have references, or because they’d never talked to a Muslim person, a Muslim woman. So I saw it as a very normal thing that they had those doubts or they thought like that, but just because they’d never been around Muslims… I think!

NAIMA: Not to embarrass them, but what, what were the things you brought to the meeting that Hajar said, “we’re not going to talk about this”?

DANNY: Uh, well. For instance on the TV show, Sana’s season focuses on a romantic relationship. And we decided, better not. Because that kind of thing depends more on the person, stuff like that, and we didn’t want to focus, like it’s always the case with women, in a relationship with a man. We say, no, we want Hajar to be the focus, and… Her experience with her friends and such.

NAIMA: What did you think of the idea, Hajar?

HAJAR: Hm… Fabulous, divine.

NAIMA: She was thinking of a word that would sound positive.

HAJAR: Fabulous. To be part of these really cool things is something I always like, I don’t know. It was a really new thing. They came to me with really fresh ideas, to do something new, and to do it according to me. To more or less show, more or less what life is, the day-to-day of a woman, although… We couldn’t show all of that in the short film, even though there’s a lot of good material in there, time was limited. To bring to people what a Muslim woman is like in her day-to-day, rather than the usual portrayals, I find lavish.

LAURA: And what was that life like? Tell us what happens on the short film, what you weren’t able to film, or what you weren’t able to tell, but tell us. I know those are spoilers. But anyway, we’re going to get that perk, the luxury to know.

DANNY: Me? Okay.

LAURA: Whoever wants to talk.

DANNY: Well, when it comes to topics, we preferred not to write a script, but rather that Hajar ad-libbed…

NAIMA: Let her do her own thing!

DANNY: Yes.

LAURA: That is, almost like a documentary.

DANNY: Yeah, because we started with her, like with an idea, but without a script, that is, nothing written down.

VÍTOR: Right, the thing is the TV show has this very young, very digital aesthetic, this very new kind of video format, like instagram. So then we wanted to do it a bit more direct, and we wanted to show everyday life. So instead of having a script, with a script format, we wanted it to be Hajar, who is actually acting, but acting out her life. Otherwise she’d be a professional actress playing Hajar. And we wanted it to be a more direct thing.

LAURA: Fresher.

NAIMA: And once you started shooting, once you’ve come to an idea, you’ve found Hajar and you’re going to film her life. What was the process of actually doing the project, which is now a short film?

VÍTOR: Chaotic.

NAIMA: Yeah, one of the things about not having a script or anything prepared is it becomes chaos. Tell us about that chaos.

DANNY: Yeah, we suffered that chaos. We had to… The thing is the equipment we had was another difficult issue because we filmed with our cameras, and then we didn’t have a proper microphone. There’s a part of the short film which is subtitled [to Spanish], because our university loaned us a microphone that doesn’t work… UCM [Complutense University of Madrid], please, invest in equipment. Yeah, so we had to subtitle it. Then there was footage with no sound, so we had to take that out. But as a matter of principle, yeah, more than a proper story, it was more things that we wanted to show.

NAIMA: And you who made the decision, okay, I have the opportunity to show that day-to-day, that everyday life, to be normal and Muslim, which you’d think it’s impossible going by mass media. You have this opportunity. What moments did you say, okay, this is what people have to see, this is what I want to convey or this is what I want people to know about young Muslim women?

HAJAR: If it was up to me, the short film would be an average day in life, with nothing going on, absolutely nothing. I’d wake up, go to school, come back, eat, no plot or anything else. That’d be my perfect short film. But taking into account the ideas they already had, they more or less told me the situations they wanted to show, I said I liked that, because… I don’t think every Muslim woman has gone through something like that, but there are some who have. For instance, when you have, the party scene, you throw a party with Muslims and non-Muslims, and the kind of conflicts that result from that, because the non-Muslims hear party and they might bring alcohol, and they don’t know… A conflict that exists for instance. While I’ve almost never been in that situation, I do know people who have, and then yeah, their idea was, well, to show tolerance and that Muslims and non-Muslims can live together, that thing people always say. I thought it was good to show that.

NAIMA: To show it. And in the short film, for those who haven’t seen it, instead of telling the girls beforehand, she makes them leave [the booze] outside the house. I love that.

HAJAR: They leave the junk outside the door.

NAIMA: So people see it.

LAURA: But then there are other scenes, right? Something happens.

HAJAR: Something happens.

LAURA: Something happens. Can we talk about what happens and how was it shoot that? That thing we’re talking about, a girl who gets drunk, or what happened…

HAJAR: Yeah, she sneaks a bottle inside the house and gets drunk.

VÍTOR: Hiding in the bathroom.

DANNY: It’s because we wanted to show, like, it’s criticism of our idea of a party. That section is like, we can’t go out to party without drinking, we can’t party, and it’s criticism of the idea we have of a party. I mean, we’re with a super cool group, you’re having a great time, and you have to spoil it doing that.

LAURA: Besides that, have you included any other social criticism in this movie?

VÍTOR: Well, there’s a sexual harassment scene, and how the girls react to that sexual harassment, as well.

NAIMA: Yeah, they almost make him disappear between all of them.

HAJAR: True!

LAURA: And once you’ve done this short film, you’ve started this project, you have met, as you said, you knew this Norwegian series and you’d seen another portrayal of a Muslim woman. You’re Media students as well, so you are in close contact with mass media, so once you move from the theory, fiction, or mass media, to know Muslim women in real life, not just following Hajar on instagram, but to be with her, with other girls, and so on, and to see Muslim women talking together… What was that like for you? What did you make of that situation?

VÍTOR: Well, we were given an incredible present in that we were able to attend an Achime meeting, which is an NGO. We were allowed to attend and film… Actually, in the short, it’s only three minutes, but we shot for over an hour.

DANNY: Yeah, an hour.

NAIMA: You should’ve shown everything, you know?

VÍTOR: That could be a short film all of its own, you know? And right, the truth is we learned a lot…

DANNY: Yeah, and then…

LAURA: What did you learn? Tell us something, something that got your attention in that meeting, for instance. What was approaching the Muslim world like for you, too?

DANNY: I mean, she treats it like a normal thing. Yeah, it’s part of her life, it’s nothing hugely important.

NAIMA: It’s not like, “I’m going to put on a Muslim costume,” but rather… She’s just there.

DANNY: They always told us, they didn’t want it to be like a manifesto, these are their actual lives. And that’s it. So we said, okay, so their lives, and that’s why in the meeting we wanted to include important things, but also little details like the licorice and stuff.

NAIMA: No, that’s very important.

DANNY: Yeah, stuff like that, that we found humorous and sort of like everyday.

NAIMA: Okay, so you’re satisfied with the project, then?

DANNY: Yes.

NAIMA: And how it came out?

LAURA: And how has it been received by your peers…

NAIMA: Yeah, the community.

LAURA: Your teachers, and above all, well, did you get a good grade, what did they say about…

VÍTOR: Very good.

DANNY: A very good grade! A ten out of ten.

VÍTOR: A ten.

HAJAR: Oh, so good. I didn’t know that.

NAIMA: All thanks to… And you, Hajar, what did you learn of the experience? What did it mean for you? And have you, once you’ve seen, once it has been edited, have you tried to project your life onto this short film, or what you consider to be life in general for a Muslim woman, after you saw… In this project? And after having finished it. How did you feel? Did you feel satisfied, is there anything you miss, do you need anything else?

HAJAR: During the process I felt very comfortable, because they and the people I worked with that I didn’t know, make me feel very comfortable. You more or less have the same ideas, the same outlook in life, they listen to you, you listen to new ideas. We had a talk on the bridge, were you there?

DANNY: We didn’t shoot that.

HAJAR: The thing is it was super funny, because we’re on a bridge to go shoot, I don’t know, I don’t remember what it was.

DANNY: The subway, the subway scene.

HAJAR: Ah, the subway scene. So we were on the bridge waiting for the directors. And on one side you had the Muslims, the Muslim actresses, and on the other side, it was such aesthetics! I mean, visually.

DANNY: It was really cool.

HAJAR: And we discussed things we had in common, and we saw it from the point of view of non-Muslims, from our point of view, and that was really… That was actually enriching and I had a great time, and I don’t know. I mean, after I watched the shot film, because I hadn’t seen it, I watched it on premiere day. I mean, on one hand I’m really happy, super happy to have finally watched the film, I’ve seen my peers’ work, and the meeting room was full, which was really special for me, so many people came, some with posters and all, it was wonderful.

DANNY: Facts. [said in English]

HAJAR: And then of course, we shot the film in May and we watched it in October. In October?

DANNY: Yes, in November.

HAJAR: in November. So then I saw myself on screen and it was like, I’m not that anymore, like, I’d say if I were to make a short film now I wouldn’t do any of this. But that’s because I think that I’ve semi-evolved. So yeah I’m always very happy to watch the short film, but I’m not at that point anymore. I’m not stuck in that place, I’m doing other things. I’m going to, I don’t know, Córdoba TV, for the short film premiere. You know? I don’t know, the experience was very good and I don’t know, if the directors want, I’d keep working with them. They have to decide that.

VÍTOR: Man!

HAJAR: They have to talk about it. They have actually told me something, like, they had something in mind, but I mean, here I am putting them on the spotlight, they can talk if they want.

NAIMA: Do you agree or not?

VÍTOR: We’re, we’re thinking about it.

NAIMA: They have passed the course and they’re going to— Another question, because besides Hajar, there are other girls as she said, she just reminded me, there were other actresses. Well, not exactly actresses, they played as themselves. Other Muslim girls who have participated.

HAJAR: That’s true.

NAIMA: So like, you all, Hajar, as Muslims we sometimes complain particularly about the way we’re shown in mass media, the way they talk about us without asking us, without talking to us, without knowing us. But then a lot of times, when there’s an opportunity to speak, there are many who take a step back, who don’t want to show up. How was it received in that organization, Achime, was it like, are they going to speak or not? Do we want to show up or do we want people to tkeep talking about us without us participating? She pauses, as if to make sure she doesn’t say anything that might offend anyone.

HAJAR: No, no… I didn’t encounter any problem. The ones who wanted to participate were very happy, like, “oh yeah!” I told them about it. Very happy. Yeah yeah yeah. And I don’t know, I didn’t come across any problem with anyone. The ones who didn’t want to be filmed, then no problem, but the ones who wanted to show up, divinely.

NAIMA: And on a more general level, this social rejection, or what about you two [Vítor and Danny], how do see that portrayal of Muslims in mass media, and then a lack of representation, I mean, do you think it’s caused by Muslims or a general issue with mass media where opportunities aren’t given?

DANNY: I would say mass media.

VÍTOR: The media.

NAIMA: Right, they’re the sole guilty parties.

VÍTOR: No, it’s like Hajar just said, in the end we had a bigger group that we had planned because people were interested, because they wanted to participate. I mean, if they want to participate in our short film, they actually don’t want to show up in media? In professional media? I’d guess they do want to.

DANNY: Right, I just sent a DM, you know?

VÍTOR: A message through instagram.

DANNY: And they cooperate. It wasn’t complicated at all, and if we could do it when we have no experience, we’re nobodies… Then powerful media, yeah. If they insist on those portrayals, it’s also because they want to.

LAURA: Yeah, honestly, because… Excuse me, this movie was conceived for social media above all, no?

DANNY: It’s a short film.

LAURA: Hence the pacing.

DANNY: Yeah, exactly.

LAURA: It’s a short film, but the way it’s paced and particularly how you’ve promoted it has been through social media, so that results in getting a lot of feedback from people who… Tell us about that, how have you dealt with it, has everything been positive, or have there been people who have been critical of your work?

DANNY: Uh, the social media thing comes from the TV show too. From Skam. Because it’s like, they are clips that get dropped through the week and with each daily clip, they edit an episode at the end of the week. So we liked that format a lot, because it seemed very intert-esque to us, very like us, very contemporary.

VÍTOR: Things like that.

NAIMA: Have you gotten permission, I just thought of this, to use the name?

DANNY: No.

NAIMA: I mean because if they find out… you’re gonna poop yourselves.

DANNY: Right yeah. We’ve thought about it, so…

VÍTOR: We want to come back to the material…

DANNY: We want to do it again in a different way.

NAIMA: You two are a menace. And what did you think of that feedback, the people, how have they received it? Not just the girls, your friends, your peers, who participated, but people in the Muslim community who the short film has reached, the ones who found out about it, how have they received it?

HAJAR: You know what, the short film actually isn’t out properly. Only the people who came to the premiere have watched it.

LAURA: Oh, okay, okay.

HAJAR: So the people who went to the premiere did because they’re interested, and their feedback, they thought everything was wonderful. So we still haven’t reached people who don’t follow us or know what we’re like. I don’t know when you’ll be able to up…

DANNY: We’re uploading it.

HAJAR: Upload it.

LAURA: But come on, boys, you have to show this to people. It’s obvious you’ve made it so people watch it.

DANNY: Yeah, we just had problems with the rights and all.

NAIMA: Right.

HAJAR: When people watch it…

NAIMA: Your parents have watched it?

HAJAR: No.

NAIMA: Okay.

HAJAR: But I mean, I told them about it and they loved it!

NAIMA: “Very good, do a very good job.” So then I don’t know if you want to ask them anything else.

LAURA: Well, I only want to know whether you really aspire to show this work you’ve made everywhere or, even, whether you want to work with her again and to do something like this again, because I think that the work you make is for people to watch it, keeping in mind what we’ve talked about, no? This kind of representation that is not happening in mass media, and you have to do it now, and it has to be watched now. And I think you’re a seed for this to happen, so please, publish it, get it sorted, come on, we’ll help. What do we need to do?

VÍTOR: No, uh, it’s being uploaded at the moment. We wanted to show with [the Muslim girls in the short film] first, so that it was an actual event, a premiere so to speak. And now we can…

NAIMA: So he says. And as Media students, as future media figures, what do you think of show biz, what is your perspective, your goals? What year are you in?

DANNY: We’re seniors, we’re done this year.

NAIMA: Your goal in the middle term, long term.

DANNY: Yeah, so far, we don’t have a lot of hope to get a job right away because show biz is complicated. But that’s why we have projects we want to do. This thing now, we’d like to do an internet miniseries, changing the name, no Skam rights or anything. With an actual script. More developed.

VÍTOR: Like shooting it with a bit more professionalism.

DANNY: Yeah, and maybe do a curserfin or something like that.

[general confusion as Vítor and Danny try to figure out what Danny meant]

DANNY: Not curserfin. With crowdfunding for microphones or something, so we can have the equipment to really shoot it properly, with that group, because we wanted it to be more diverse. Because in Skam there was only one Muslim girl and she was meant to be the diversity. And we wanted to go more in depth and include Asians, blacks, whites…

LAURA: So to go more in-depth into the material. And you, Hajar, have you made up your mind about the future or this foray into acting?

NAIMA: Are you going to drop your engineering studies and become an act…

HAJAR: Uh, no, the acting thing is something I’ve done since I was a kid. It’s always been a hobby, a bonus, within myself, and I’ve always had fun with it. Yes, I love engineering and I’m not dropping out, but if these kind of things come up, then why would I say no?

NAIMA: Of course.

HAJAR: If I’m given the opportunity, which we’re rarely given, then if you’re given it, hold onto it, cling to it.

LAURA: Right!

NAIMA: You have to take it. So we genuinely wish you every success, with this short film which actual name we’ll announce when it gets one, as well as your professional career. And of course, to keep working through our output, so we can demolish stereotypes, our worlds become closer, and to work all together for the benefit of everyone, because when we get together, we can create things such as your work. Anyway, thank you so much for coming.

DANNY: Thank you.
