Japanese Mythology | The Red String of Fate

For the Japanese people, human relations are predestined by a red string that the gods tie to the pinky fingers of every man and woman at birth. Legend says that the two people connected by this thread will have an important story, regardless of time, place or circumstance. This connection is not necessarily romantic or limited to couples; indeed, it can extend out towards all those significant and perhaps seemingly insignificant others that make up the story of our lives. The red string may become contracted, stretched or tangled with other threads, as surely often happens, but rest assured that it can never be severed. The human body houses an endlessly complex network of blood vessels. We owe our existence to these life-giving rivers. However, there is one rather special channel within this system that connects the heart with the pinky finger. Formed by the ulnar artery, this channel makes your least notable finger a true “representative” of your heart. For this very reason, in many cultures, when two people make a pact or swear a vow, they do so by linking pinky fingers. According to the Japanese myth, this thin thread emanating from the core of our being doesn’t end at the tip of the finger, but extends invisibly throughout the world, to end its course in someone else’s heart. It is a way to understand that our itinerary of encounters are a predetermined plot where couples’ relationships, the intimate brushes against someone, and all the little stories we crisscross with others are neither random triumphs nor accidents, but part of a scarlet tapestry whose threads were given to us when we were born but which we knit ourselves. As the Japanese would say: our world has its share of obstacles, but nothing in it happens by accident.

I’ve noticed that birds aren’t always that afraid of dogs

They fly up to them where the bird and dog are unbothered

It’s like they can tell they are a part of nature too, and they know when they mean no harm.

Yet birds are pretty much always afraid of humans.

My dream as a child was that birds and all animals would be able to tell that I meant no harm, that they’d trust me and know I only want to be a part of nature with them.

I guess the main experiences I’ve had where they have trusted me is when they have no other option, when they’ve been wounded and just need a little assistance.

Though, I do have stories of gaining a young birds trust, and that of a few squirrels.

Here's my last drawing of 2023, 'Stand by Me: Damon & Nat' is a portrayal of intertwined hands symbolizing a vibrant relationship—a union of two individuals, retaining their uniqueness yet moving forward hand in hand. In love, maintaining individuality amid profound feelings is crucial. It's a balance my mother once taught me—one I echoed through a Greek myth of the androgynous, seeking their other halves in love. This artwork captures the fiery relationship between Nat' and Damon in Andromeda Six. It delves into their passionate yet complex bond through their entwined hands, resting on green satin sheets—a moment of intimacy and vulnerability. Nat'—gender-fluid and bold—shares an intense, complicated relationship with Damon, the crew's second in command and assassin. Their interactions, marked by teasing and flirtation, echo the fervor of their bond. Yet, beneath it lies deep emotion. Entitled 'Stand by Me,' inspired by KI Theory's song cover, this piece embodies unwavering support and commitment. It signifies the enduring connection and loyalty between Nat' and Damon, navigating life's trials hand in hand. This artwork celebrates not just their love's passion, but also their profound connection and unwavering loyalty, standing united through every challenge. True soul connections are rare. Not every friendship or relationship has it. You cannot force it or try to make it happen with anyone. It’s there or it isn’t. If you call every relationship or every interaction you have with someone you’re fond of a “soul connection,” then you are watering down what true connection is and cheapening it. When you have that deep connection, when someone has seen and touched your soul, you bloody will know it. It’s unmistakable, you feel it in your bones, and nothing can substitute it.
