Neuroaesthetic Interiors: Designing Spaces That Influence Brain Activity and Emotions
Overview:
In recent years, the concept of neuroaesthetic interiors has gained attention in the world of design, blending the fields of neuroscience and interior design to create environments that positively impact human emotions, behavior, and brain activity. Neuroaesthetic design takes into account how the elements of a space, such as color, light, furniture, and layout, influence our mental and emotional well-being. This emerging design philosophy goes beyond aesthetics, tapping into the power of the brain to enhance experiences and improve the quality of life.
What is Neuroaesthetic Design?
Neuroaesthetic design focuses on understanding the neurological and psychological effects that various elements of interior spaces have on the brain. It uses scientific research on how the brain processes visual stimuli, emotions, and cognitive functions to create environments that support mental health, productivity, and emotional balance. By aligning design choices with how the brain responds to stimuli, neuroaesthetic interiors can significantly enhance how individuals feel, think, and behave within a space.
The term "neuroaesthetics" itself combines "neuro" (relating to the nervous system) and "aesthetics" (the study of beauty and art), and it emphasizes the importance of designing spaces that are not just visually pleasing but also emotionally enriching and psychologically stimulating.
The Influence of Color in Neuroaesthetic Design
One of the most crucial elements in neuroaesthetic design is color. Colors have been shown to evoke specific emotional and physiological responses in the brain, influencing everything from mood to behavior. For example, warm colors such as red, orange, and yellow can stimulate energy, creativity, and warmth, while cooler colors like blue, green, and purple tend to promote calmness, relaxation, and focus.
Incorporating the right color palette into a space can enhance its functionality and the emotional atmosphere it fosters. For instance, offices and workspaces can benefit from shades of blue or green, which have been shown to improve concentration and reduce stress. On the other hand, living rooms or social spaces may feature warmer tones to encourage relaxation and communication.
The Role of Lighting in Brain Activity
Lighting plays a critical role in influencing mood and brain activity, as it directly affects circadian rhythms and melatonin production. Proper lighting design in neuroaesthetic interiors can regulate sleep patterns, boost energy levels, and create a pleasant ambiance. Natural light is especially important, as exposure to daylight has been shown to improve mood, focus, and cognitive function.
Incorporating a mix of task lighting, ambient lighting, and accent lighting can help to create a balanced atmosphere within any room. The use of dimmable lights and adjustable light temperatures allows for flexibility in adjusting the mood of the space to match the desired emotional response.
The Power of Space Layout and Flow
The layout and flow of a space are essential components in neuroaesthetic design, as they influence how individuals interact with their environment. An open floor plan that facilitates movement and interaction can create a sense of freedom and connection, promoting socialization and collaboration. Conversely, a cluttered or disorganized space can lead to feelings of stress and anxiety.
To create a harmonious space, designers focus on elements such as furniture arrangement, open sight lines, and creating designated zones for different activities. For example, in a home or office, a well-thought-out layout with clear pathways can promote better communication, focus, and productivity, all while supporting emotional well-being.
Summary:
Neuroaesthetic interiors represent a transformative approach to interior design, one that recognizes the powerful relationship between brain activity, emotions, and the spaces we inhabit. By thoughtfully integrating elements like color, lighting, layout, and natural elements, designers can create environments that enhance mental and emotional health. As our understanding of neuroscience continues to grow, neuroaesthetic design will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping spaces that promote well-being, productivity, and happiness. Students pursuing an interior design course can explore how neuroaesthetic principles are revolutionizing the way we design spaces that positively influence the brain and emotions.

When you're debugging code, there are a number of possible scenarios, in order of increasing scariness:
The code works, but with some known issues.
The code doesn't work, but I know why.
The code doesn't work, and I don't know why.
The code used to work, but I know what changed.
The code used to work, and I don't know what changed.
The code used to work, failed, and I fixed it so it works again, but now that I fixed it I'm not sure how it EVER worked before.
The code works, even though it clearly shouldn't, and I don't know why.
Just fixed a #6 issue at work so I'm a little shook.

Apologies if you've answered this before, but is Skifree an early liminal horror game?
More of a parallel evolution.
A lot of early video games didn't have defined end points, instead simply continuing either until something structural broke because the developers didn't expect anyone to get that far, or until the game's difficulty curve mechanics went off the rails in a way that rendered further progress impossible – for example, a game where the baddies get faster with every level eventually reaching a point where they simply teleport directly to the player's location as soon as the level starts. These failure points are colloquially known as "kill screens".
Many contemporary liminal horror games are playing with similar ideas, often directly inspired by the creators' childhood experiences with video game kill screens. The notion of there being some inherent boundary built into reality beyond which the rules that are necessary for human life to exist break down pre-dates video games by a fair span, of course, but "what if real life had a kill screen?" is a very handy metaphor, and many liminal horror games make good use of it.
SkiFree, meanwhile, is parodying the phenomenon of video game kill screens by having a literal kill screen – i.e., a specific point in the game's progression where a big hairy monster just randomly shows up in an otherwise monster-free game and eats you.

I love Bauhauzzo, and the lovely amounts of pun that went into his name, design, concept, and commentary on the art and design world.
I would happily sit and weep with him at the Everything that is and was and will be.

Today I found out that you can now actually draw in Figma, and it's basically a simplified alternative to Adobe Illustrator. I like the brushes here, they are much more docile than in AI and Corel Draw.
By the way, this drawing is made up of 2176 strokes :O

Eviction in the most comical way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the past two weeks eye have been trying to crowdfund for a new pair of strong prescription glasses. Because mine are broken.
CA: $HushEmu
Goal: $1275
In that interval I was fired due to “job abandonment” for calling off of work, because I cannot legally drive nor can I see. Now I am facing possible eviction with a very aggressive and hostile landlord.
Proof
THEY tried to evict me despite paying. Just because it didn’t “reflect” on their system on time.

Implementing strict out-of-bounds checking in my 3D platformer, but instead of actually forbidding the player from going out of bounds I just use it to create a demon that chases you around the OOB space, and if it catches you it engages you in a lengthy unskippable dialogue about the tabletop RPG it's writing, thereby killing your speedrun.
