Harry Addams and the Philosopher’s Stone

𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙎𝙞𝙭: 𝙎𝙥𝙚𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝘽𝙞𝙧𝙙𝙨

September 1st couldn’t have come quicker, in Harry’s mind. It was a hellish month. Everyday his aunt's family would spend all day out in the sun, holy seven circles of hell. They flew on broomsticks (which Harry excelled at, of course.) and played with gobstones and their neighbours. A giant, loud, family of gingers. He remembered how his aunt had pulled him away from his reading (Poisons, Hexes to Use on Your Enemies, & Easy Curses by Bertha Nightlock) to meet the family of gingers.

"Harry, dear," A smile was bright on Ophelia's face. "These are our neighbours, the Weasley's!" She spread her arms out as if she was on a muggle gameshow Grandmama liked to watch but was always disappointed when contestants either won or didn't get mauled by a mountain lion.

"Hello there Harry!" A plump woman with red hair and a round face bustled out from her family, holding her arms out, a smile on her face. "I'm Molly Weasley, and these are my children," She pointed to a tall boy with glasses and curly red hair, he was the only one wearing a matching robe set. "This is Percy," His arms were crossed and he stood tall, unlike the others—his face was tight and his lips pursed. He looked positively dreadful. "My twins, Fred and George,"

"Hey there Potter!" The twins said in unison.

"Say do you—"

"Have that—"

"Scar?" They finished together.

Harry simply stared at them, his eyes glazing over. The twins looked exactly alike, down from their faces right down to their shoes. They both sported the same haircut, same clothes, and shoes. It was like they were carbon copies.

"And this is my youngest son, Ron, and my daughter Ginny. Ron will also be attending Hogwarts this year!" Ron was tall, taller than any 11-year-old Harry saw. But his shoulders were hunched, and his face was downcasted, his blue eyes kept flicking up and down, as if he was insecure. No, he was insecure. Harry could tell.

"So is Harry! My sister, who lives in the States with her husband, sent Harry to live with us this summer so he could get used to the magical world." Aunt Ophelia explained, her hands moving as she talked.

"Oh how wonderful! Where've you taken him, Ophelia?" Molly and her children were invited inside the house, out of the summer heat. Harry tried to creep back up the stairs but a quick glare from his aunt (that was fairly similar to his own mother's glare) stopped him.

"He's been all over the Alley, and we've taken him to Hogsmeade!”

Ah, yes, thought Harry. Memories of his timely visit to the village outside of Hogwarts was boring and uneventful. The only thing that struck Harry as interesting was an old pub by the name of Hogs Head—he hoped there was an actual event where you took the head of a hog, but alas he was entirely let down—and an abandoned “haunted” house, dubbed by the locals the “Shrieking Shack”.

Thinking about the visit made something in Harry ache. He knew Wednesday would’ve loved to investigate and look into this haunted shack and summoned devils from the depths of hades with him. A part of him wanted to go home, to be away from his too-smiley aunt and her family. His cousin’s weren’t as bad as the other children back home, but they weren’t on the same page as Harry. They did not play with headless dolls, nor did they have a subscription to “Tortures Torture”. Beatrice was the only one who actually was worth being around. She seemed to be the only one to inherit some sort of Frump genes.

After the ghastly introduction of the ginger family, Harry isolated himself back in his room, waiting for the hours to pass.

There were only a few moments of his dreaded summer with his aunt and her family that Harry did enjoy. For example: Aunt Ophelia was a Potions Woman and she had her own home laboratory that Harry found himself walking into one rainy day in the English country. She wore a white lab coat and black gloves that went up to her elbows. At the sound of Harry shutting the door to her room, Ophelia turned. Her big black eyes were huge and bug-eyed under the googles she wore.

“Harry! Come in!” A smile spread across her face before she turned her attention back to her plants and concoctions. Harry slumped in, the shadows warming his skin in the dark and dank room. He took a sniff—Nightshade, ahh home.

Ophelia patted a stole she pulled out from underneath the workbench and Harry took a seat. Together, Aunt and Nephew worked as they made a simple healing draught for certain native poisons from Hungry. It was the first moment that Harry felt relaxed and realised how he could be related to this woman. How his mother and her lived in England all their young lives.

A flash of gold made him pause.

“You were in Slytherin?”

Ophelia smirked as she finished writing on her clipboard the shipping information for the crate of potions.

“Of course.” Her gloves and goggles lay off to the side, allowing her to grab the metal she received. “I won the Slytherin duelling championship, beating all the pesky inbred purebloods.” She sounded proud. Harry watched her dust off the metal, though he didn’t see why. “Tisha won for Ravenclaw, she had to sneak into Slytherin to sleep. Her housemates were playing dirty and she wasn’t allowing a single curse or “misguided” spell to keep her from that metal. When she wants something, she’ll get it. It’s why we never tried out for Qudditch, if we both made it the games would be brutal for both the teams and the rest of Hogwarts.” She smiled and chuckled here and there. “It was better for everyone if the Frump Sisters weren’t against each other, but on the same side.”

Ophelia placed the metal back on the wall that Harry realised were moving photographs of what looked like his mother and aunt in their Hogwarts uniform. The only reason why he could tell who was who, was the colours of their robes. Aunt Ophelia had black hair??

“Your hair…”

“Yep, black. I only started to dye in my sixth and seventh year. I wanted something to make us stand apart. I can’t believe how many times boys went to the wrong sister. I knew it made Tisha angry. She once hexed a boy’s bollocks and he was in the hospital wing for weeks.”

Another photo of the sisters, this time where Ophelia’s hair was blonde, and they sat in what looked like a courtyard full of statues. They were laughing and Harry saw a man with white blonde hair in the back of them staring at the pair of sisters.

A buzzing noise yelled through the potions lab.

“Oh! That’s dinner!”

(Aunt Ophelia gave Harry the brain along with mashed potatoes that night.)

"Hey there Potter!" The twins said in unison. "Say do you—" "Have that—" "Scar?" They finished together.

"He's been all over the Alley, and we've taken him to Hogsmeade!”

“Only one week until September 1st!” screamed Cordelia from her bedroom at the crack of dawn. Out of all of the Harrisons in the household, Cordy was the one who never ran out of energy. From dawn to dusk, she was up and about, zooming around her home and outdoors, playing with the Weasleys or Fawcettes. Her best friend, Sarah, joined her on a spy mission today. Their target? Harry Potter—er, Addams. Her cousin.

Sarah almost “shit-a-brick” once she found out he was staying over at her house. It was actually hilarious that Sarah, who swore off all boys after the Ronald Weasley crush fiasco, was now acting like a love-sick puppy. Her blue eyes were constantly on him, watching Harry in a star-struck manner.

“Shh,” hissed Cordy as Sarah inched closer to the crack in the bedroom door. Harry was sitting on the floor, reading a book that looked old and worn. He wore his weird clothes again. With a twitch of his hand, sparks flew from the tip of the wand he got.

“Wow!” breathed Sarah. Cordy rolled her eyes. Girls.

“Harry!” Her mothers voice shouted from the bottom of the stairs. “Your mother is on the phone!” The girls scrambled—tried to at least—away from the doorway as the boy with long legs rushed out and bounded down the stairs. Cordy just stared, her eyes must’ve deceived her. Because in the midst of chaos, her cousin had smiled and for once looked happy and joyful, his cold indifference left behind.

Harry spoke with his family for hours. Uncle Fester was back! A woman found and brought him back to the family. He could hear the joy drip from his fathers smooth tongue. Even his mother was happy for her husband. Harry had never met the famed uncle his father spoke about fondly. The only one he’s met is his aunt, his fathers and uncle Fester’s little sister, Tristessa.

The only one who wasn’t thrilled at the fact that Uncle Fester was found was his little sister.

“I don’t think he is truly his Uncle Fester Harry.” Wednesday spoke with a clipped tone. There was no room to argue or disagree. “Why do you think so, Spider?”

“He… smells off.” Harry understood what she meant. All her life, Wednesday was able to tap into her senses, if someone's smell was off, there was something wrong. Harry wondered if that was her magic coming through or if that was just her weirdness.

“Watch him. Closely. Don’t allow him to hurt our family, you’re in charge Spider.”

“I will brother. Write to me.”

Harry was thankful he asked Aunt Ophelia to cover his thrice-damned scar with the bangs he’d grown over the summer. For once, he was hidden within the crowd, looking … average. Standing on the mysterious platform with Beatrice, while his aunt and uncle fussed over their children, Cordelia and Olivia. Cordelia complained and whined about not being able to leave with Harry and her older sister, while Olivia tried to use popping sticks to scare older wizards and witches. (She succeeded, multiple times. Harry was so proud.)

“OK children, you’ve got your wands, familiars?” aunt Ophelia asked. She once again wore a hideous gown of blues and greens. Harry’s nose wrinkled in disgust.

“I have my wand.” He said. The wand in question was in his black satchel “backpack”. Beatrice nodded her head too, voicing her own response before checking the cage of her pet toad, William.

“Oh my loves,” Ophelia smiled sadly at the two young wixen. She brought Harry and Bea into her arms, hugging them close as Harry’s eyes widened and squirmed out of her hold, freeing himself. His green eyes were set in a narrowed gaze, all while Ophelia ignored him and led them both onto the train. Richard was in charge of their other two children, while his aunt levitated their luggage behind them.

The three searched for an open compartment, crossing over to the next car as they passed older students. Harry’s eyes watched on, taking in every movement, every person. His fingers twitched at his side. The noise of laughter and joy echoed in his head—what a horrendous and ear-scratching sound.

Soon, the trio found an empty compartment. Ophelia levitated Harry’s and Beatrice’s luggage on the rack above them, and with a final goodbye, she left, leaving the two on their own. Without words, the cousins opened their respective carry ons, taking out whatever they thought necessary for the long trip ahead of them. William croaked a high-pitch noise that Beatrice clarified was “singing” beforehand, yet Harry still glared at the amphibian creature. His fingers twitching at his side.

Ignoring the creature next to him, Harry settled in, leaning his back against the window and he splayed his long legs out. Beatrice did the same except her ankles were crossed, keeping her modesty in check. A book laid open on Harry’s lap as he read silently, memorising the wand strokes of each spell they were to learn in Charms. Beatrice read a muggle book, her eyes glued to the page as she read with William next to her. The train started to move and neither cousin got up to wave goodbye to their family, instead they took solace in the silence each provided for the long journey ahead.

(Y/n) learned long ago to ignore her cousin when he was with his Pureblooded friends. While Draco entertained these buffoons, (Y/n) and Nott, read their books silently, ignoring the bigoted conversations. Though she knew the reason why Draco was talking like this; his father, Uncle Lucius, threw around the phrases and the like without a care. Aunt Cissa never did, she would agree with her husband and his colleagues, but never use such phrases and names like they did. A part of (Y/n) wondered if the reason was Aunt Cissa’s sister and her family, or maybe something to do with that mark. Nevertheless, (Y/n) never grew used to the bigoted names and thinking and hated it whenever her cousin, her best friend, would say such things.

“Anything off the trolly dears?” (Y/n) didn’t hear their compartment door sliding open, not until the old witch who worked the magical train spoke in her hypnotic voice. Crabbe and Goyle rushed up to the woman and shoved a pouch full of money and grabbed whatever they could get their hands on.

She waited until the two pigs had sat down before she grabbed her own sweets, Draco whining loudly in the back, and giving some to the gaunt and skinny Theo. Soon the compartment was silent except the loud mouth sounds coming from Crabbe and Goyle. Hugging herself, she turned her attention to the wixen fairytale, trying to drown herself in the lyrical written word.

It was dark when the train pulled into the station. A while ago a voice had echoed all through the train for the students to change into their robes. That was where (Y/n) met a bushy haired girl named Hermione. They were the only ones who changed early—well, only girls that is—and they spoke in (Y/n)’s compartment while the boys were in the bathroom/changing room.

The girl—Hermione, (Y/n) reminded—was quite animated. Spoke with her hands and had excellent vocabulary and had a posh attitude. But if you looked deeper, (Y/n) could tell she was scared. Nervous. She was a muggle-born, and (Y/n) asked questions of her home life in exchange what growing up in a Wizard home was like. Of course she left out the feeling of homesickness, of longing for life she never quite knew. “Black? As in Sirius Black?” Hermione asked when (Y/n) finished explaining the Family Tapestry of Malfoy Manor—If Uncle Lucius was here he would’ve hexed her for telling their secrets to a muggle-born—and mentioned that her aunt was of the Black family.

“Erm… yes. That’s her cousin.” Hermione raised a brow. She didn’t ask what her last name was. She was grateful. In only just a few moments, soon the whole entire school of Hogwarts would know that she was a Black. And there were only two Blacks in the UK. If she was born in France and was of the French Blacks—the smaller branch—she would be going to Beauxbatons and wouldn’t have the dark cloud hanging over her. Since it was common knowledge that her Uncle Regulus disappeared and her grandmother had a traditional Pureblood funeral and it was all over the papers, there was only one Black that could be her Father. The man that had crashed the funeral and drank himself silly before being hauled out of there by his best friend and best friend's mother, Dorea Black (who got an invite because she wasn’t kicked out of the family).

Soon everyone would know that Sirius Black’s daughter would be in Hogwarts. Her stomach turned.

“Firs’ years! Firs’ years! Firs’ years, overhear!” The man was a giant. Wonderful. A slow smile crept on Harry face as he watched the bushy-bearded man wave a meaty paw at them, waving them over to the docks. Beatrice turned to look at her cousin, her bottom lip caught in between her teeth.

“Okay Harry, I’ll be heading over there–” she pointed to a few girls and a boy waiting by a carriage that was being pulled by skeletal horses he knew his parents would’ve wanted—”and you’ll go over to Hagrid—he’s the game keeper here at Hogwarts—and I’ll see you in the Great Hall for your sorting, kay?”

Harry nodded. “Be careful going in the boats Har, a few firsties last year fell overboard and got acquainted with the friendly squid that lives in the Black Lake.”

With a final warning, his cousin scampered over to her friends and began chatting with them as they climbed aboard the carriage.

“What are those?” questioned a weak voice.

“What are what, Nott?”

“You don’t see them?

A blonde, a brunette, and a black/(h/c) souls stood next to Harry, looking at the strange creatures.

“What are you two looking at?! I don’t see anything!” complained a white-blonde boy, his lips pouted. He scoffed. “Whatever. Crabbe, Goyle, let’s go.” He swaggered off with two big boys trailing behind.

“I see them too, Theo.” said the girl, she touched the brunette's arm, stroking it? Harry sneered.

“Oi! You three! C’mere!” The giant shouted, waving his lantern.

Harry rolled his eyes as he walked towards the man, leaving behind the boy and girl. Climbing into the unoccupied boat—well, except for a boy with straw blonde hair and a long face who was hiding the fact he was crying—as the man exclaimed “No more’n four in a boat!” as the boy and girl got in the only available boat with Harry.

“Everyone in?” Harry looked behind him and saw no one standing on the platform. “Right then! FORWARD!” He shouted, causing some students to jump at both his thundering voice and the sudden movement of the boats.

Students all around him ooooed and awwed at the display of magic and the majesty of the castle, Hogwarts, on the hill. Harry stared. His green eyes take in the dark surroundings. His mother studied here. As did her sister, and his biological parents. Though he never associated or thought of himself as the name he carried on his birth certificate. But a part of him, deep inside, knew that this was the place where he would get all the answers he needed. He needed to know who his parents were. Needed to know them beyond the fact they were war heroes and they died at Voldemort’s hand.

“HEADS DOWN!” The curtain of ivy kept the entrance of the boathouse hidden, Harry wanted to scoff. His parents, his father, had a better entrance to the family vault than this.

The boats docked and soon students were clambering about, while the giant handed the sniffling boy Harry shared a boat with a toad called Trevor. Memories of Beatrice's toad singing non stop while on the train made Harry want to chuck this toad into the lake. Harry and the rest of his future classmates walked behind the giant as he led them into the castle and up some stairs to reach a door, which the man knocked with a forceful thrust. It creaked open to reveal a woman, a mature woman, wearing emerald green robes and a black pointy hat he recognized. Grandmama rocked that hat during the forties while she was young, travelling the world.

“I’ve gotten them Professor McGonagall! The Firs’ years!” He puffed. Professor McGonagall flicked her cat-like eyes in their direction, landing on Harry for a brief second.

“I see that Hagrid. Well, come on then. Follow me.” She spoke with a Scottish accent, Harry noted. She led them through the castle, the marble staircase and suits of armour, with portraits of famous witches and wizards, monarchs, and animals, lined the walls, and creatures of myth were carved out of stone. Lit torches lined the walls and chandeliers hung from a high ceiling.

McGonagall stopped in front of a door, this was located through a lounge where knitting needles moved on their own, cups floated in the air still steeping, books and quills flipped their pages and wrote, and a few animals lay fast asleep in front a great fireplace.

“Now, through these doors lay your future. Your future housemates, your house, your teachers, and your future education. Before you start attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, you must be sorted into your houses. Your house, dear students, will be your family through the duration of your stay. There are four houses here at Hogwarts, and each house has a long and magical history. There are Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, and Slytherin.”

She smiled, though Harry was not comforted by that smile.

“Your triumphs here at Hogwarts will earn you and your house points towards the House Cup, while your misbehaviour will lose your house points. The rules of Hogwarts are posted outside the Great Hall. After the start-of-term banquet, your House Prefects will give you all maps of Hogwarts, and direct you to your common rooms, and will assign you a group of students and a junior prefect to be your guide for the first month of term.”

Her beady eyes looked at everyone. “Now, any questions?”

A ginger haired boy—Ron, Harry realised—raised his hand.

“We don’t have to fight trolls or anything like that in order to get sorted now do we?” A few students laughed, a bushy haired girl among them, while others looked on nervously. Harry rolled his eyes. Honestly, he comes from a family of wizards and witches and he has to ask that question?

“No, Mr. Weasley, you do not have to fight a troll or any magical creature here at Hogwarts whether to get sorted or not. We have a sorting hat to do that. I believe that your brothers have something to do with your question?” She raised an eyebrow and Ron flushed red.

“Does anyone else have any questions?” No one raised a hand or asked.

“Right then, I shall pop in to let them know we're ready for you.” She opened the door and disappeared for a few moments before coming back in, leading them through.

The Great Hall exploded in colour, Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, with dashes of Purple and Orange as the first years walked in being led by Professor McGonagall. Students gasped and searched the crowd, Severus knew who they were looking for. He was looking for him too. He was looking for a boy with messy black-brown hair with square glasses and hazel eyes with a swagger in his step, overtaking McGonagall and cutting in front of everyone to place that blasted, raggedy hat on his head, and for it to scream GRYFFINDOR. But he wasn’t there?

Potter's brat wasn’t there to be found. But Severus knew him to be here. He knew his name was on the list and knew McGonagall sent him an acceptance letter.

McGonagall dragged a three legged stool over to the raised dias, the magical hat appearing in a flash, and she whipped out the parchment of names. The parchment of which his nemesis’s son’s name was on.

But before she could start calling out names, the hat sang a song. Severus rolled his eyes at the hat and its antics. He didn’t have time for this. His leg bounced up and down in anticipation. Finally, the hat stopped singing, and the sorting began.

“When I call your name, I will put on the hat and you shall be sorted.” McGonagall shouted.

She cleared her throat.

Hufflepuff, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Gryffindor—Severus sneered at the girl who looked overjoyed.

Finally, they got their first Slytherin. Though, Bulstrode wasn’t that much to brag about. Her father was a dimwitted business man and his parents had to go abroad to find him a wife. Sadly the girl received her fathers porky figure. (Damn all his gossip sessions with Narcissa.)

“Black, (Y/n)!” Severus perked up. His godson’s cousin and his other nemesis child. Sirius Black was a terror who got off on Severus' suffering, and he hated him. However, his child was innocent and got the brains from her mysterious mother. She was like a newborn baby deer, her legs shook as she took a few steps to the stool. He could hear the whispers of her name from the older students—her father was famous.

The Hat looked confused. She was a hat stall then. For ten minutes she sat on the stole, as she looked to be arguing with the hat. McGonagall shared a look with Severus and Albus, worried etching across her face. Severus inwardly scoffed. Of course she was worried for her. She was the child of one of her precious Cubs. Lioness Minnie wanted to march and break down Black's cell and got into a few arguments with Albus about his wrongful imprisonment.

“—SLYTHERIN!!!” Black looked upset as her robes magically changed to the Slytherin uniform. Two snakes.

She marched down the steps after ripping off the hat and headed to his House’s table as the Gryffindors made hissing noises—the Weasley twins, he mused.

The sorting continued, Severus barely paid attention, only clapped when Slytherin gained a new student. Draco was easy, the hat had barely touched his head when it shouted Slytherin. Nott’s boy took a few minutes before it settled on Slytherin as well. When they reached the P’s, Severus’s back seemed to grow straighter.

Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin…

Parkinson draped herself on Draco, trying to smile prettily for his godson. Severus did not envy Draco. As the Scion of the Malfoys, he would be well sought after from brides and their families, Parkinson was one.

“Potter, Harry.”

Severus drew a breath. A boy, tall and lanky, wearing his black robes with a crest pinned on his left, walked up, confident steps with a cold indifference. Before sitting down his voice rang out as he addressed McGonagall.

“Addams.” She raised a brow.

“Excuse me, Mister Potter?”

“My surname. My surname is Addams, and I would prefer to go by that instead of Potter. I was raised by the Addams family.” Gasps flew from Poppy and Flitwick, and Severus sneaked a glance at Albus. The twinkle died out from his blue eyes.

“V-Very well, Mister Addams.”

Satisfied, Potter sat on the rickety stool.

“—SLYTHERIN!”

Harry smirked.

No one made a sound. The hall was quiet. No one clapped and Harry relished in turning these people into speechless birds. No longer did they squawk, he clipped their wings and freedom was snatched away from them. How wonderful~

Day 7

Prompt: Watching a christmas movie

AKA: I just make references to obscure christmas movies and let Ámbar, Simón and Luna react to them

Ámbar, Luna and Simón were in the Benson living room, deciding to have a christmas movie night. A christmas movie night didn't seem like much... Ámbar was never much for christmas movies. However, she did like movies with drama, romance and good music, which a lot of christmas movies did have.

"Is there any argentinean christmas movies?" Luna asked.

"Barely," Ámbar shrugged, "It's less focus on christmas and more focus on something else in those movies."

It was true that the northern hemisphere countries were the ones making more christmas movies, as it was more or less assumed everyone had snow and coldness in december. Which was very far from true - there were plenty of places in the northern hemisphere that didn't have any snow. But it was the ideal, according to the movies.

"We could watch an animated christmas movie," Simón suggested, "The animated ones are always really underrated."

"Yeah, and funny!" Luna added, "Some are really badly animated, which makes you laugh."

"Don't forget the ones that are well animated!"

"Oh, of course!"

"Hey, what movie is this?" Ámbar suddenly said, finding some obscure film with a title in a language she didn't know. Simón took out his phone and typed it through google translate.

"Well, it's apparently called 'Santa is the father to all the children' if you directly translate it. But the english title is "In bed with Santa". It's about a mom who has children with a bunch of different men and is planning on having another child with her new boyfriend. For christmas she invites all her previous men into the house to celebrate christmas together everyone and during dinner she reveals she is pregnant. But what she doesn't know is that her boyfriend has gotten a vasectomy. In that case, who's the father of the baby?"

"That sounds... absolutely wild," Ámbar said. "Can we watch it?"

"Sure, but there's apparently remakes in different languages. Ooh, there's one french remake. You know fluent french, Ámbar, maybe that's the one you should see."

"We should see them all in order, starting with the original and then the remakes!" Luna suggested.

"Nah, let's just... watch the original first and foremost. I can read subtitles. Unless they dubbed it."

"It's a good thing we dub everything in spanish!" Simón chuckled.

As they finished the movie, they all were in shock.

"Well, that was... a movie," Ámbar said.

"Certainly. I mean, our family situation is a little odd too, but at least it's not the mess that is that family."

"Maybe we can see another movie," Simón suggested, "Something less dramatic."

"Is there any mexican christmas movie?" Ámbar asked.

Luna and Simón's eyes widened and they got very mischevious smiles.

"It is time to introduce you to Santa Claus from the ripe old year of 1959," Luna said.

"Isn't there any newer film?"

"Yeah, but this one's a cult classic!" Simón chuckled, "And it's the wildest thing you'll ever see!"

"Ok?"

Ámbar was curious to see why this movie got the two so ecstatic.

"So what did you think?" Luna asked excitedly.

"Well..." Ámbar said, "I... It was certainly from it's time..."

"Yeah, some things have not aged well," Simón agreed.

"However, I have to admit, it was kind of hilarious. I mean the whole thing with the devil and Santa fighting was something I never would come up with."

Luna and Simón smiled.

"Can we see another christmas movie now?" Ámbar asked.

"Sure," Simón shrugged, "Which one do you want to see?"

Ámbar smiled, "Ok, call me childish... but I really want to see Santa Buddies."

The others giggled.

"Let's watch!" Luna exclaimed.

Movies I watched this Week # 153 (Year 3/Week 49):

So on Monday morning, as I start preparing my "Viewing schedule" for the week, I stumble on a new space documentary The making of JUICE, and two hours later, I already know that this will probably be my most emotionally-rewarding film of the week. It chronicles the final years of development of The European Space Agency's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE), which took off to Jupiter on April 14, 2023. It’s a deeply technical dive into a topic I know nothing about. But it’s absolutely exhilarating - 10/10.

I really struggled with Scorsese's new saga Killers of the flower moon. It's an indictment against America's original sin, the genocide and dispossession of the ingenious population, and the systemic evil it shows is deeply unpleasant. Had De Nero ever played such an sinister character? His Jimmy Conway was also a ruthless murderer, but he didn't come across as Machiavellian as here.

It's a stunningly beautiful film, but the tragedy should have been told in two hours, not 3.5.

While waiting for Miyazaki's latest 'The boy and the heron', I caught Castle in the sky, one of the last Ghibli Studio features I hadn't seen yet.

An imaginative retro-futuristic adventure, its drawing style is somehow primitive compared to his later films. As always, many of its themes and tropes were repeated later nearly-verbatim: The old woman pirate who become Ubaba in 'Spirited away', the many fanciful steampunk airships, the strong female protagonist and her sidekick, the magical journey, the beautiful scenery, the ecological destruction, the sumptuous food.

(Unfortunately I could only watch it in the bad English dubbed version).

From the '30 best mobster movies' list, the classic French Noir Touchez pas au grisbi ('Don't touch the loot'). Cool Jean Gabin is the honorable gangster, a refined, quiet, responsible, thoughtful criminal with an impeccable looks and manners. 8/10.

3 by German-born French director Dominik Moll:

🍿 The Night of the 12th, a patient award-winner cop thriller that follows an investigation into an unsolved murder. A young woman is burnt alive, and in the quest to discover who did it, quiet dynamics about misogyny and gender roles are being exposed. Reminiscent of 'Memories of murder'. The rural areas outside Grenoble were mouth-watering beautiful. 8/10.

🍿 Moll’s previous thriller, Only the animals, was even a tighter thriller. Like ‘Rashomon’, it tells seven diverse stories that don't seem connected until the very last scene. This one is worth watching without any knowledge about it beforehand; it's so surprising, and shocking, and fresh. My 6th film with Denis Ménochet. Best thriller I've seen for a while - 9/10.

🍿 His earlier hit, With a Friend Like Harry, disappointed me greatly. "Harry" meets an old high school acquaintance at a roadside restroom, and invites himself to stay with the friend's family. Without any clear motivation, well-to-do Harry decides to buy his struggling friend a new car, and as some days go by, starts killing everybody around him, "because they irritate him (?)". It opens with a long grating scene of the three children crying in the car, and continued with none of the characters becoming appealing or interesting. A terrible Hitchcock at best.

🍿 The five devils, My 5th uneven film with Adèle Exarchopoulos. It's a mixed up magical fantasy which is also taking place in the eastern mountainous part of Rhône. At its core, there's a tender bond between a mother and her daughter, and the 10-year-old has a extra-strong sense of smell. But then a slew of confusing subplots emerge. They include pyromania, clairvoyance, disintegrating marriage, supernatural time travel, lesbianism, trances, and what have you. 4/10.

🍿 Sink or swim, my 10th film with gorgeous Belgian actress Virginie Efira. A low-brow and predictable 'comedy' about a depressed group of suburban, sad-sack losers, each with their own midlife crisis, who join a male team of synchronized swimming. Efira is their trainer, and the whole premise is ridiculous, and sloppily-made. 2/10.

First watch: Vincente Minnelli's turn of the century Gigi. A lame musical about a teenager prostitute school... Sorry, "Courtesans". Hard to fathom that in 1958 it swept all the 9 Oscars it was nominated for! It opens with 70-year-old grandpa Maurice Chevalier singing “Thank Heaven For Little Girls", an ode to 7 year old girls with a sly smile on his face. Disturbingly creepy, it's explicitly about "grooming", or, how to train a young woman to be a mistress. 1/10.

At least it got me interested enough to read about the "Belle Époque", the "Golden Age" era from a century ago, which had so many similarities to our recent past: A period "characterised by optimism, regional peace, economic prosperity, colonial expansion, and technological, scientific, and cultural innovations". And which ended so brutally by some certain historical calamities, the two World Wars…

Make way for tomorrow, the "Saddest movie ever made"? An old couple loses their home in 1937 America, and none of their five selfish adult children wants to help them stay together. A real tearjerker that may have been the inspiration to Ozu's 'Tokyo Story'.

“… This land doesn’t seem to have changed much…”

Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864-1916) was a symbolic, melancholic Danish painter. Michael Palin and the Mystery of Hammershøi is part of the travelogue series that Michael Palin used to host. Palin was fascinated by him, because many of his Vermeer-inspired portraits featured a mysterious woman shown from the back.

He lived mainly on Strandgade 30 in Christianshavn, [which I passed on many times], and painted the interior of his home more than 60 times. Extensive use of Bach's Prelude No. 1. But the documentary itself was not very insightful.

🍿 Soderbergh's tight conspiracy fire cracker from last year, Kimi, his nail-biting Covid-19 'Black Mirror'-style thrill-ride. Like Hitchcock's Rear Window about our digital life today. With Derek DelGaudio as the murderous heavy. Terrifying 9/10.

A 1915 silent film version of Alice in Wonderland, using faithful costuming to the original John Tenniel's illustrations. Some of the animal characters were creepy.

Hatchi X 2:

🍿 Hatchiko, a new Chinese remake of the famous real-life Japanese story about the faithful dog, waiting to his owner at the railway station, even years after his death. Adora and I watched the Richard Gere's 'Hatchi' many times. Here, the dog is not an Akita, but a mongrel and his name is BaTong. There's also a scene where he is saved from a dog meat restaurant, just before being made into spicy stir-fry. Very sentimental, with Joan Chen.

🍿 I also tried to watch the original 1987 Japanese original of Hachikō Monogatari, but this turned up to be a insufferable Olde Tyme, super sweet version, and I had to abandon it midstream.

🍿 American symphony documents a year in the life of musician Jon Batiste and his wife, as she struggles with leukemia. I've previously seen five other films that were produced by Obama’s Hollywood company, 'Higher Ground'. But as much I adored him 15 and 18 years ago, this 'heart-felt' documentary was boringly pedestrian. 2/10.

🍿 I devoured Leave the world behind because I always seek realistic stories about the end of our world. It started slow and small, with some highfalutin cinematography and sound edits, surrounding the lifestyle of the upper middle class well-to-do and un-famous. But it quickly lost steam as it turns into a mixed-up conspiracy nightmare, that tries to get all the possible apocalyptic tropes into one giant pot. A generous 5/10.

The Realest Real, another short parable with Mahershala Ali, about fashion, social media, status. Produced by the Kenzo brand. 2/10.

Fast Charlie, a new Mississippi/New Orleans crime thriller, with Pierce Brosnan as an aging, omnipotent hit-man, dreaming of retiring to Tuscany. Like a mid-range Elmore Leonard caper with high body count. James Caan's last paycheck.

What does it say about me that one of my favorite romantic comedies of late is Long shot, and that I've seen it probably 10 times, including last month, and that I felt 'forced' to watch it again today?

The Boys ll Men groove is how this movie appeals to me. But it's so well-done on every level. 10/10.

Kuromi from sanrio!

Kuromi (クロミ, Kuromi) is My Melody's rival, who is a white rabbit or imp-like creature wearing a black jester's hat with a pink skull on the front and a black devil's tail. The skull's facial expression changes to match Kuromi's mood. Fittingly, her birthday is Halloween (October 31st). Her name translates from Japanese to English as "chrome."

Kuromi's appearance is also similar to those of cartoon characters from the 1990s such as Pichu from Pokémon. Kuromi has become a popular character for the punk, scene, and goth crowds due to her appearance.

Although she may look tough and punk, she is actually very girly and is attracted to good-looking guys! Kuromi enjoys writing in her diary and is hooked on romantic short stories. Her favorite colors are black and hot pink. Her favorite food is shallots, all kinds of meat, and in recent Kuromi merchandise cherries have been shown. Despite being a villain, Kuromi is mostly into food and even cooks. You might call her a rowdy free spirt

Kuromi is from the anime Onegai My Melody. In the anime series Onegai My Melody, Kuromi holds a strong grudge against My Melody originating from small, innocent mistakes My Melody made when they were children. She keeps a notebook which she dubs the "Kuromi Note" filled with over 6,324 instances of times My Melody has wronged her. These events are very minuscule (such as My Melody eating the last pickled onion from Kuromi's school lunch tray) but Kuromi treats them as traumatic events, and vows to get revenge someday. It is implied that these feelings stem from jealousy against My Melody for being "cuter" than she is, and eventually turns to delinquency out of sheer rage and feelings of hopelessness against the world.

After fleeing from Mariland to the human world she meets, partners up with, and falls madly in love with Keiichi Hiiragi, a coldhearted bishōnen violinist. After being chosen by the Dark Power to charge Kuromi's weapon, the Melody Key, through his violin playing, Hiiragi assists her in her quest to collect 100 black notes to summon the Spirit of Dark Power and get revenge on My Melody.

izzie’s favorite movies and tv shows of 2020 (aka the worst year ever)

another year, another movie and tv show review. this year has, to put it simply, sucked. 2020 has been so terribly awful that sometimes the only light you can see are the absolute bangers of movies and tv shows that came out this year. with that being said, some of the movies and tv shows didn't come out in 2020. if the are mentioned in this post it is because they either: had a season come out this year, i found them this year, or they became popular this year.

SPOILERS: it may not come as a surprise but just in case you didn't realize, there will be many spoilers ahead, read at your own risk.

tw // death, suicide, drug use, mild adult language. if any of these things might trigger you, i strongly urge you not to read this post.

there is no specific order of these shows and movies, i'm just writing as they come to mind. if you enjoy any of these movies or tv shows, or if you have any suggestions for me, please let me know!

TV SHOWS

1) Santa Clarita Diet

Okay, so I know this show doesn't have anything to do with 2020. But, I found this show in 2020. I put it off for a while, thinking it wasn't my style of a show, but boy was I wrong. I loved this show. Sheila Hammond (Drew Barrymore) is a normal suburban wife and mom. She is a real estate agent with her husband Joel (Timothy Olyphant). She struggles with the fact that she isn't very adventurous. This all changes when she throws up an insane amount at a house showing. She then finds herself craving adventure, and craving human flesh. Yeah, she's a zombie. Not only is this show super hilarious, but it also shows the growth that they have with their characters and their family. I'm also team Abby (Liv Hewson) and Eric (Skyler Gisondo).

2) Outer Banks

So, I'm from NC. And, watching this show at first bothered me because I can very obviously tell this show isn't actually filmed in the obx, and the geography isn't exact, but once I got past that, I loved it. John B (Chase Stokes) is a teenager that lives in the poor side of the outer banks. He has a friend group called the Pogues which consists of JJ (Rudy Pankow), Pope (Jonathan Daviss), and Kie (Madison Bailey). They absolutely hate the Kooks, which are the rich kids. A while after John B's dad gets lost at sea, presumed dead, the group finds some evidence that may solve the mystery, and make them rich. In the process, John B falls in love with a Kook names Sarah (Madelyn Cline) whose father Ward (Charles Esten) may have a little more to do with the mystery than he let on. Through friendship, murder, and secrets, the gang may just figure out what happened to John B's dad.

3) Love, Victor

Alright. I loved loved loved Love, Simon. I also really loved the book "Simon vs. the Homosapien Agenda." So, when I heard about this show, I was so excited. Victor (Michael Cimino) is a teenage boy that moved to Creekwood with his family. He meets Felix (Anthony Turpel) who lives in his building. He also meets Mia (Rachel Hilson) and they begin dating. But, he also meets Benji (George Sear). While trying to get used to a new school, new friends, and a new relationship, Victor finds himself questioning his sexuality. With the help of Simon (Nick Robinson) and his friends, Victor finds it in himself to finally come out, and he admits his feelings, for Benji. This is such a good show, but I was so upset when season 1 ended on a cliff-hanger.

4) The Haunting of Bly Manor

The sequel to The Haunting of Hill House. Now listen, haunting of hill house was an absolute banger. When I saw that Bly came out I nearly died. I was so excited. But, I was alone in my apartment and also a lil bitch. So, I had to wait a week until I was home with my family to watch it. Now, I was so excited to be scared, and there were a few jump scares and ominous moments, but this season was more centered around the story line of Dani Clayton (Victoria Pedretti) and her new life in a foreign country. When seeing an ad for a live in job as an au pair. When she gets there, she meets the two young children she’ll be looking out for and the other workers of the house, including the gardener, Jamie (Amelia Eve). Throughout her stay at Bly she begins to notice weird behaviors from both children and by the end of the series she sacrifices herself for the children. Sadly, this story is being told by Jamie who Dani had fallen in love with during her stay at Bly. Now I was somewhat upset about the lack of horror, but was still very intrigued and drawn in by this series.

5) Julie and the Phantoms

Alright, at first I was not gonna watch this show. I thought it looked a little too young and childish for me, but everyone was talking about it on twitter so I had to. I. Love. This. Show. This show centers around Julie (Madison Reyes). Julie is a teenage girl who, sadly, lost her mother. The one major thing she shared with her mom, was their love for music. Since her mothers passing, she gave up music. This is until, dead musicians from the 90′s show up in her garage. Luke (Charlie Gillespie), Alex (Owen Joyner), and Reggie (Jeremy Shada) all tragically passed away in the 90′s after eating bad street hotdogs. When Julie finds their CD in her garage, she decides to play it and they come back in ghost form. But, only she can see them. With their help, she finds her confidence to play music again. Also, she has to find away for them to stay because they’re slowly disappearing.

6) Derry Girls

Bitch. I love this show. And yeah it didn’t come out in 2020. Shut up. I found this show recently after watching the cast on the holiday special of the Great British Baking Show. I loved the actors so I had to watch the show. This show focuses on Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson) a 16 year old girl that lives in Derry, Northern Ireland in the 90′s. Alongside her is her cousin Orla (Louisa Harland), her two friends Clare (Nicola Coughlan) and Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell), and Michelle’s English cousin James (Dylan Llewellyn). During these years, a lot of people in Ireland struggled, especially because it was during wartime. Even thought this show isn’t focused heavily around the war, it’s amazing to see these teens live a fulfilling life while struggling with the state of their country, and the lack of money that their families have.

7) Elite

HA. This show did have a season in 2020 so leave me alone. But bro, I love this show. At first, I didn’t watch it because I thought I could only watch the dubbed version in English, which I hate. I hate dubbed shows they look so weird. But, once I found out I could watch this show in Spanish, I fell in love. But, sadly, theres too damn much to talk about in one little post. It’s crazy. But basically it just follows the lives of teens in high school that are trying to survive. And no, not in the “I’m surviving high school,” sense. No, people be getting murdered.

MOVIES (tbh i didn’t find a lot of movies good this year lmk which movies u liked this year and maybe i’ll like them!)

1) All the Bright Places

After the death of her sister, Violet (Elle Fanning) is devastated. She closes herself off, and has her parents get her out of doing school work that involves working with others. But, as time goes on, they realize she may need to start to move on. Violet then meets Finch (Justice Smith) who is enamored by Violet. He suggests they do a project together. While finding and visiting some of the smallest wonders of their state, they begin to fall for each other. While you are focusing on Violet and her mental health, you tend to miss some of the signs that Finch’s mental health isn’t great either, but by the time you do, it could be too late.

2) Dangerous Lies

Hmm. This was weird for me. I had only ever seen Camila Mendes in Riverdale, and honestly, not a fan. So, Katie (Camila Mendes) and her husband Adam (Jessie T. Usher) are struggling with money. Katie decides to take a job working for an elderly man, and eventually gets her husband hired there as well. Unfortunately, he dies, but for some odd reason, leaves the house and all of his fortune, to Katie. As they get comfortable in the house, they begin to uncover some very weird and dangerous lies.

3) The Devil All the Time

Ok. Iconic. You got so many hot men in this movie. Bill Skarsgård, Sebastian Stan, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson. C’mon now. That’s crazy. But, this story is so long and in depth that I wouldn’t even know where to begin. This movie is a bit disturbing. It involves murder, sexual assault, killing of animals, and so much more so if that’s an issue for you please do not watch this movie. It was also quite long, but it was still good.

4) After We Collided

Okay just listen. I was that teenager. I read wattpad stories and was, embarrassingly, addicted to After. This was not a great movie per say, but it was After. This is a sequel to the movie After. This movie centers around Tessa (Josephine Langford) and her recovery after her breakup with Hardin (Hero Fiennes Tiffin). Theres sex, alcohol, bad acting. The whole nine-yards. But c’mon, they’re so cute together.

5) To All the Boys p.s. I Still Love You

Okay it was a good movie. I enjoyed it. This movie focuses on Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and her boyfriend Peter (Noah Centineo) and their relationship post the first movie. But of course relationships aren’t super steady, and John Ambrose McClaren (Jordan Fisher) shows up. Yeah, John Ambrose, from her letter. They become closer and Lara Jean has to decide who she wants to be with. Spoiler, it’s Peter. BOOOOOOO justice for John Ambrose McClaren, he deserved better.

More ClanSwapAU! Ft. Team 8

Very briefly, Shino and Kiba swapped Clans, but Hinata (now named Nenza) was swapped from Main to Branch Family. More info under the cut but I'm just happy to have a neater doodle out, finally!

Shino Inuzuka

This Shino is still quite smart but it tends to be overshadowed by how much more openly and stubbornly proud he is. He's also louder with a much shorter fuse due to a lack of tolerance for idiocy. As such, he considers his world's Kiba an absolutely infuriating weirdo sometimes... but like, he's still respectable since he really cares about his insects and the team unabashedly, despite how often Shino blatantly rejects his attempts at deeper friendship. So, Shino "deins" to let him usually lead the team around, at least until Kiba tries to stir things up with others for fun because he's Like That. He also has an obvious soft spot for Nenza as she is quite the fighter and actually tolerable, even if she's pretty aloof. She doesn't open up much but it just makes him want to help her out. The reason he has a difficult time being on the receiving end of a team is because Shino Inuzuka has a not so hidden "Lone Wolf" mentality that makes gaining his trust a VERY long and difficult process, but he naturally cares too much and acts altruisticly despite, especially when it comes to children. He can act very annoyed and bothered, but he always offers help where he can. Yet he absolutely REFUSES to be helped. He has a really hard time accepting people's kindness and is quite the cynic.

Niaka

Akamaru is still part of Team 8, but is Shino's dog named Niaka instead. Mostly because as funny as the Akamaru/Shiromaru conversation was, the actual Original Shino Inuzuka named his dog Yoshiro, and I'm just following that pattern with Akamaru. Niaka, under this Shino's care, has the temperament and character of a trained K-9. Do not touch him. Do not pet him. Do not do it. He doesn't fuck with anyone who isn't Shino until Shino gives the okay. And even then, he just doesn't like unfamiliar people or people who Shino seems to become more annoyed/angry with. He is Shino's VALUED partner (and so deserves your utmost respect) first, a trained Ninken second, and hardly "just a pet". So. Do. Not. Pet.

Nenza Hyuuga

ClanSwapAU!Hinata had a name change, like Menma from RTN. She is a very quiet but mostly because she's thinking. Otherwise she actually has a lot to say at any given time and will let you know. She is full of resentment for the Main House due to the death of her father Hiashi for the sake of the clan. She knows she's always been weaker then the son of the Main House, Hinote, her first cousin and father's nephew, but after the death of her father for his sake as a child, and the way he's spoken of by her Uncle and Grandfather, she makes it her life mission to become stronger for Hiashi's sake and show the Main House what a Branch Member is REALLY capable of. She soon loses her natural sweetness and shuts Hinote out. She becomes much more wraithlike like as she gets older, and people mistake this for weakness and passiveness, but once it's called for or if she's provoked, she gets down and dirty and is quick about it too, which throws everyone for a loop if they don't actually know her. She shows no fucking mercy. Her tongue is sharp, her minds on the money, and you best pray her eyes don't make you her next target. Yeah, she might look tired, but she's just tired of everyone else's bullshit. Luckily, even with Hiashi gone, her family member Ko looks out for her.

Kiba Aburame

Kiba isn't the most... self-restrained Aburame that you'd meet. And as a result, he comes off very unprofessional by Aburame standards. But by normal Shinobi standards, he's just young. This Kiba still indulges in antics but isn't so much a feral troublemaker as much as a self-assured weirdo who loves to debate things as devil's adovate and make people squirm. He's a lot more conscious of himself and his actions and so is more calculating about what he actually says and does, but it still comes out in a very Kiba fashion when he speaks his mind freely. He can be cooly logical about the most absurd things and so comes off immature and infuriating because THIS IS STUPID BUT, LIKE, HE *DOES* HAVE A POINT??? He trusts Shino, but won't admit he's kind of cool and isn't afraid to literally knock him off his figurative high horse. He trusts Nenza, and always tries to keep Shino's temper under control so she doesn't have to. Kiba is also fond of Niaka but Niaka does take a while to warm up to Kiba. He's the one constantly playing mediator when his teammates cause trouble that Kiba himself didn't actually cause.

I think the best part of this is that Hinata in canon in most languages as her voice go through many different emotions thanks to RTN but I couldn't quite hear Shino and Kiba until I realized that Uryu Ishida would constantly be yelling at Sosuke Aizen who would just keep pushing his buttons as far as English dub goes I think that's just great.

do you have an anime watch list for beginners like the best animes of all time

Hello Nonny, thank you so much for your question. This is going to be a long post so get comfortable.

Like any anime lover, I have my own ideas of what some of the best animes for beginners might be. Unfortunatly, a lot of the "best of all time" type anime is not really the best for newer viewers. Like for so many others, my first animes were epic series like Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Sailor Moon and Inuyasha. These all hold special places in my heart and are all fun nostalgic or first watches.

The anime genres I tend to gravitate towards now are slice of life, comedy, drama, romance and shoujo with some sports, supernatural and mystery animes thrown in. So, keep that in mind as you read this list. If those are not your kinda things, then this is not the list for you. A lot of shows on this list are classics or highly popular in these genres. I've also choosen anime that comes in both English sub and dubbed versions because, for beginners, dubbed is sometimes easier to follow and enjoy. Subbed or dubbed, there is no judgment here as long as you are enjoying what you watch. Finally, I tried to stick to anime with mostly 1-3 seasons only. There is nothing wrong with the more epic long running series and many of these fall under "the best of all time" heading but seeing that an anime has 100+ episodes can be kinda daunting for a novice viewer. Now to the list...

First of all, if you are just wanting to try anime but, not wanting to commit to a whole series, I would recommend starting with a movie or two. Some classic films I would recommend would be Totoro, Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle from Studio Ghibli. Some more contemporary films like, Your Name, Weathering With You, A Silent Voice and Wolf Children, would also be great anime starting points. These films are staples for any anime collection.

Now, as for anime series, here is just a list of 10 that I think quality animes and would be great beginner watches.

Ouran High School Host Club:

Haruhi Fujioka is a scholarship student at the elite Ouran High School. One day, Haruhi becomes accidentally indebted to the school host club. Now she must work off her debt by playing the role of a male host to the female student clientele. Hilarity ensues.

This reverse harem show is a much loved modern classic for a reason. It's full of fun characters and lighthearted comedy moments with just enough drama and romance to keep you coming back for more.

Maid Sama:

Misaki Ayuzawathe is the first female student council president for a previously all boys school. Now, her life is busy with maintaining top grades, keeping the male students in line, recruiting more girls to the school and keeping her part-time job at a maid cafe a secret. When one day Takumi Usui, the most popular boy in school, discovers her secret job, Misaki finds herself doing everything she can to keep him from revealing the truth to the whole school.

This shoujo has enough of comedy, romance and drama to satisfy anyone's appetite.

Fruits Basket:

After finding herself orphaned and homeless, high schooler Tohru Honda makes a new home with classmates Yuki and Kyo Sohma along with there guardian Shigure Sohma. But the Sohma's have a dark secret, they are under a curse that causes them to change into animals from the Chinese zodiac when hugged by members of the opposite sex. Now, Tohru must keep their secret as she learns more about this family and their curse.

There are actually 2 different versions of this show. Many people would recommend that you start with the completed classic 2001 version but, I'm going to say it's okay to skip that for later and dive into the 2019 reboot and ongoing series. The newer series is so beautifully animated and has a more detailed version of the story than its predecessor. This shoujo is full of drama, comedy, romance, supernatural mysteries and inspirational moments. You'll definitely need a kleenex box when watch this one.

Kamisama Kiss:

One day high school student Nanami Momozono finds herself abandoned by her father, penniless and homeless. After she saves a mysterious man in the park, he offers to help her by giving his home to her. She soon discovers that this gift home is really a rundown shrine and she has magically become local land god. Now, she must learn to juggle her school life and her new position as a land god. Luckily for her, a reluctant fox familiar named Tomoe comes with the shine and has to give her assistance with it all.

This classic is part shoujo comedy and part supernatural adventure. I definitely recommend this in the English dub if for no other reason than to enjoy J. Michael Tatum's voice work as Tomoe.

The Morose Mononokean:

Hanae Ashiya spends his first week of high school with a mystery illness that has left him feeling increasingly weak. He eventually discovers that the cause of his illness is a large fluffy creature that has attached itself to his back. When Hanae comes across a flyer advertising an exorcist who expels youkai, he decides that exorcism might be just the thing to remove the creature. The flyer leads him to the Mononokean and a magical tea room which suddenly appears. The Mononokean turns out to be a fellow classmate, Haruitsuki Abeno, who reluctantly helps Hanae but, demands that Hanae work as his assistant to repay him for the exorcism. Now, Hanae spends his free time working to learn about yokai spirits and how to best help the yokai that live in the mundane world.

This supernatural comedy is just fun to watch, with enough drama to keep you interested. It really has that classic Saturday morning anime adventure feel but, for a slightly older audience.

The Devil is a Part-Timer:

Just as Demon Lord Satan, a.k.a the Devil has nearly conquered the world of Ente Isla and destroyed his enemies, a hero named Emilia corners him and forces him and his top general to escape through a portal to modern day Earth. Emilia, of course, follows him determined to finally defeat the Devil. But now they all find themselves on Earth with no powers, they must discover how to survive even if that means the Devil must get a part-time job at Mc Ronald's just to pay the rent.

What can I say about this show... It starts out with an almost stereotypical supernatural action/adventure anime feel only to turn into a comedic slice of life with a little romance and the ocational fight sequence thrown in. This show is one of the best examples of how versatile anime can be and a great way to get a little taste of a lot of genres.

Death Note:

High school student Light Yagami stumbles upon a supernatural notebook that allows its owner to kill by simply writing someone's name down. Light soon sees the death notebook as a way to reform society's ills by killing criminals and undesirables to create world without crime. Once the police discover that a mysterious serial killer is targeting criminals, they bring in the worlds greatest detective, L, to find and capture this serial killer. This begins a epic battle of witts between Light and L.

This classic anime is a lot darker than anything else on the list but, it's definitely worth mentioning. It was one of the earlier animes I watched and I'm still a fan to this day. It falls mostly into the categories of thriller, supernatural, mystery, horror and crime drama. It is also another one that I'd strongly recommend the English dub over the subbed version. So, if you want to take little walk on the anime dark side, this is a good place to start.

Yuri On Ice:

After a disastrous performance and coming in last place at the Grand Prix, ice skater Yuri Katsuki is thinking about retiring. That is until his skating idol and living legend Victor Nikiforov shows up to his home offering to be his coach. Now, with Victor's help Yuri works to rebuild his career and fight his way to a gold medal at the Grand Prix Final.

Yuri On Ice is my all time favorite anime so, of course it's going to make the list. So much about the struggles and perseverance of the characters in this sports anime is inspiring. Then, when you add in a little romance, flashy skating routines to a great original soundtrack and the drama of competition, everything about this show gets a gold medal.

Free!-Iwatobi Swim Club:

Haruka Nanase has always had a strong connection to the water and a passion for swimming. As he starts high school, Haruka is reunited with childhood friends from a youth swim team, Nagisa Hazuki and Makoto Tachibana. The three decide to start a school swim team. Now, they must recruit a fourth member and train to be able compete in their first swim meet. Watch to see these guys bond as a team and friends and as they pursue their goal to compete at Nationals.

There are a lot of great sports anime out there but, this one is a good one to start with. Free! exemplifies so many standard tropes within this genre and does in an engaging way with an easy to understand sport. There are multiple seasons and movies for this series but, the first season, Free! -Iwatobi Swim Club, is satisfying enough as a stand alone.

My Roommate is a Cat:

Subaru Mikazuki, an introvert writer with social anxiety, adopts a stray cat after a chance encounter. Together they both learn they are not as alone as each of them believed.

This slice of life anime is sooooo relatable, cute and funny. If you're looking for something that's low key and will make you feel all warm inside, than this is the show you should start with.

Here are some honorable mention animes to also consider: Toradora, ReLife, Princess Jellyfish (I just love this show and think everyone should watch it), Black Butler (if you're willing to sort out the correct viewing order it can be worth it), the classic Avatar: The Last Airbender (yeah, yeah, yeah is it anime or isn't, doesn't matter it's a great gateway) and Kakuriyo- Bed and Breakfast for Spirits

So here are some of my top favorite anime for beginners recommendations. A nice mix of classic standards and a few newer shows that really show off specific genres. These are just my opinions, I'm sure there are many other animes that should probably make this list. an update and primer:

so the last winter was weird. I had a complete breakdown, went into psychiatric hospital for 40 days in total. two seperate times.

learnt a heap of new things, met a tonne of cool people and had amazing conversations and few fights but overcome my own demons by that.

brain speaking-I have a scarred brain stem and neurological disorder is not a mental diagnosis, but a neurological disorder, proven by MRI scan, ADHD.

also damage to my basal ganglia, and prefrontal cortex.

neurological diagnosis means ADHD is not a "mental" health issue, as some believe, rather a neurodevelopment disorder caused by structural differences in the ADHD brain.

other neurodevelopment disorders include: Tourettes, Autism, Cerebal Palsy, Dyslexia and other Motor and Intellectual Disabilities. (Which recieve, in my view, a lot of insight, media information and stigma reduction by the advocacy networks surrounding these types of disability).

Over the last few years Autism has been over everything, I've seen mainstream media cover Tourettes and yet ADHD is still HUGELY misunderstood, misconceived and misrepresented in media, be in from the angle of documentaries, personal insight of a "typical" case, films, tv, and other media.

one of the first things my dr told me was "in females it rarely presents as hyperactive red-cordial OD child"

which is what my mother BELIEVES, that is because I have an adopted cousin with the ADHD dx who was that growing up, but the representation I'm told is also divergent for women with a higher IQ score than the average IQ. I come in around 142 and tested 123 at age 3 when I was unable to focus, pay attention and had severe trauma. I tested 142 in grade 8.

I'll share my experience as a female who is intellectually gifted, with higher IQ than average, and an adhd brain:

I've been told gifted and talented "genius" children are harder to diagnose because the symptoms present differently, we hide it better (camouflage) and our focusing can be "faked" by mediocre efforts of academic success.. this is true, I would do the assignment the Sunday night hours deadline, last minute, or have my parents half do it for me, plagiarise it (fuck I've killed my whole academic career now) copied but changed my words

from old 1970s encyclopaedias I KNEW they couldn't cross reference (I went through 15 years of school never studying doing homework or assignments and still had top grades).

I literally did not listen, and spent my classes planning the end of the world survival strategies with my GT friend who, basically helped me with my calculus and hard fucking maths, which was the ONLY 50 minutes of the day I put attention into my work.

now I'm going to be heading back to full-time study in the coming months, I get anxious as the pressure of a Bachelor level degree, and the pressure it takes me to perform, is enough to break me down. I've been advised it might be wise to start light (like a basic vet style diploma) and then build up, which is logical, but I keep thinking I'm meant to be doing my thesis by now. which is the kind of pressure one gets as a kid who is told repeatedly, "your intelligence is exceedingly the average and you can do ANYTHING you want"

I wanted to be an astronaut, a storm chaser, and an architect, a town planner and then a journalist. I always held to being a "FBI agent" or spy (I wonder why). so when I found psychology is really a blend of all these things, I kinda found a niche in a psych and social science double degree. but I'm thinking my academic career is LIFELONG, and due to the fact I also want to work in my field alongside my many written thesis coming, I'll be in academics for a long time. I may fail a few things, which I have to come to terms with. I do not fail easily, or readily, but I'm a perfectionist type-a academic who will put my whole life on the line to achieve "merit". I get exams, I get assessments, I read journals super-easy, I talk the talk and walk the walk so well psychologists who are at masters level compliment me on my "knowledge".

when it comes to mental health and trauma, I will always have the personal attachment, called lived experience, which will make failure and burnout, 100 percent realistic. I have to boundary up, bootstraps on, and prepare that yes, my personal "bias" will probably be entwined in this.

which is why I'm looking at the social science for the statistics and thesis writing side of things, and the counselling for the trained therapist side. either way, the degree of counselling requires so much self-insight, and then the social-science will back me away from personifying it. the other choice is criminology, which leads to forensic psychology, which is eternally fascinating. my main concern is the pro-pedophile content Ill be up against, which will look at the anatomy of a shoplifter akin to the devil, and leave the pedophile in the DSM-5 dx "paraphilia" box.

I'm not joining or jumping to anything.

either way I've got 2 year of credit, a heap of pathways and a lot of "academic momentum" from all my life being aimed to be "academic powerhouse". I went through my files and found a lot of awards I'd won in my high school, and top place in the competitions we would be entering in. I remember feeling so sad if I had a "credit" vs a distinction or high distinction, only to see now, a credit in university maths in year 9 is a skillset I don't have anymore so, good on me. or a credit in English, or Science at that age was pretty impressive, considering these tests were random and not studied for.

just a general skills assessment only the top 30 kids in the year were to take on a year by year basis and put out to vet from the top universities and taken by other kids in the same grade around the state.

it puts so much focus on my intelligence, because it's primed to be that way, I know that is true. I know I feel good being academically successful and it gives me a feeling of "achievement" but is it really for me?

I also found 2 letters from my local politicians offering me job placement, work experience and I was 1/4 kids in my 10th grade graduation tom get the letter, and due to my behaviour I pissed ALL the idiots who bullied me off. I was "too pretty to be a nerd" "too smart to be pOpUlAr".

so I made a group of misfits, who are all highly intelligent, creative and my group had the ONLY gay male in the school AND THIS IS BEFORE YOU FUCKING RETARDS MADE IT "COOL". he was bullied badly, so fuck you, you fucks claim "liberalism" but I bet you were the type of idiot who bullied guys like him in high school while you pretended to like my chemical romance and fake cut yourselves. I hate you all, forever.

my grade was full of idiots who were fake emo, who left the scene the moment the scene changed to dub-step and club music. I was there, watching you all, like sonny Moore, went from FFTL to that dubstep skrillex shit he started in 2009.

I dated you, hooked up with you and I went to your gigs. I know who was real and who was fake. I met some of you years later and realised the more emotive ones were the less "alternative appearing".

I can say 1/10000 emo guys from the 00s were genuinely Into the music and scene for the right reasons based on my dating history and this can and will be analysed statistically using SPSS one day to prove a lot. I've had too many relationships from each sub-culture and I have had 4-11 males at a time per public "output" of my energy pursue me over life.

I'm not being cocky when I say I have a long line of "suitors" and its banked back about 50 men. it's been a thing I've avoided as it seems to grow based on my body shape, attitude, appearance, so I am currently out of touch with dating scenes, no interest to try that ANYWAY, given the fact that I have had so many LONG TERM relationships ANYWAY. I can't see another one going well, and at this case, I'm living with an ex but we never went on conventional and now our families label this 3 things: "asexual", "polyamorous" and "open relationship". I'm also "bisexual" but this all to humans outside, looks ridiculous on paper. (wild orgies and lots of swinging or some stupid sex magick probably is what J brother literally thinks we do).

bc humans are intrinsically designed to need to label things they don't understand. we share a lease, not a relationship, and fucking polyamorous, I WISH. there are no girl-girl-guy 3 some, or orgies, or sex magic parties.

this has changed the attitude and perception of this "relation' which Is non-romantic, non-sexual. he can date and likely, will, as can I , and I likely won't date.

I would say 14/15 have had ADHD, or other mental illness and or trauma. which means to me, nothing at all.

I think this "open book" non romantic relationship style of "friends and roommates" not sexual.

attachment is misunderstood by others but works well fro my adhd, meaning I'm not expected to marry, or be a wife in any capacity. he is free to do what he wants, as I am, and open communication is a novel frontier I brought into this in the start, and stayed with for the duration. we fight, but I fight with a lot of people in my life over many petty things. also down to my adhd, I believe, I have rejection sensitive dysphoria, which makes me hypersensitive to rejection, perceived or real.

im not sure if this is trauma or adhd or both. but

I have used sexuality as a weapon in many relationships but it cannot or will not be used here, so I have had to resort to uncovering parts of myself which I never knew, which will stay with me even if he decided to marry and wife up in 5 years, which I'm okay and expecting him to do, and I would much rather that then be trapped in a situation where I cannot be that "wife/mother archetype" as I'm too "femme fatal/other-woman/sex-laced seductress and siren" a "FWB, unicorn, drug buddy, hook-up where im a therapist" or "intellectual and cognitive mind-bender work-study obsessed woman".

both at once and many types of human, including one who is a full-time ceremonial magician of 7 years. I will drink, drug, fuck, fight like males and still be more feminine and high maintenance than 89% of women. I grew up a tomboy and don't mind getting into fun, adventure based situations, like hiking, or anything adrenaline, I would only be reluctant to eat weird shit.

I also have many "neurological" issues including ADHD, and trauma which causes a rupture in the average human and I dating.

I'll tell you how many men have said "you are the unicorn" and then realised what that means, I went as far as canvasing the PUA world back in 2014 after reading the game, a book on PUA, which is essentially, pick up artistry, based on NLP and hypnosis. I did this after reading the copy my ex in 2008 handed me before we dated saying "I gave this up for you". it took me years to open the book, buy when I did I truly believed the only way I would fall in love again, was through PUA. that failed in so many ways but gave me a training foundation for men who were candidates for that, I have trained up J, and the way that sounds is BAD. I know, but I got a lot of value myself, I just don't see it how I wanted to see it.

but that was my original intent, and I achieved this he knows that, knew it was happening and evolved for the best self.

I am thinking we can modulate this into a business model for how I was operating in the BDSM world was mainly psychological, not physical.

I get told all of is incredibly intimidating (I am told) to women and men.

I don't really care anymore, because people have always seen this part of me in the wrong way ANYWAY, but I own who I am NOW. which is what I needed ANYWAY. so it cannot be stolen again, and sexual healing has come from abstinence ironically.

I also don't care what or who is trying to tear up my relations, toxic or not toxic, all people around me will be on a healing journey by default, or cut out of my life, for I am radiating that energy so brightly its impossible NOT to feel that pull.

I will drag your shadows into the light, and make your secrets spin from your lips into my consciousness. its not what I do but its what is design.

I make your weaknesses mountains to climb over. you cannot hide from these in my presence, I won't be this controlling or obsessive female who wants 24-7 attention as I have a life full of meaning without love or sex. I don't want to be wined, dined or expensively gifted, unless specially requested.

I don't want love letters or romantic declarations, this isn't some femnazi bullshit, but it triggers me. I appreciate the efforts and won't make you feel bad about your insecurities, for mine are probably 30 x more pronounced.

I appreciate small things, that most males won't or don't know how to do. like remembering things I've said and being thoughtful. or knowing my silence isn't personal, or a game, but a protective wall. I've had songs sung too me, guitars played, songs written, or things made in ways that are heartfelt. but I've always had them used against me too. so it is the context. I value time, energy, conversations of depth and reciprocal exchange. I also value trauma understanding, my alters and fragments being accepted and valued as me as a whole and a person who is not afraid, or scared of stupid stuff like sensitivity, emotions, feelings as raw as my own. men feel intensely too, lol.

but will only give oral sex 100 times before I don't recieve it, I can communicate now so that wouldn't happen.

but I won't be a bitch about this stuff. I am extremely feminine and care in ways other people, do not, I forget nothing people tell me, so it can be a reward or reverse uno card pull in a fight, but I am not evil or deviant in my relations. I react, depending on how you treat me. I don't need your money, or providing source of income to be okay as I am my own queen, however sharing resources is okay to build something. I don't need to be seduced, but will need to be shown a person is trustworthy.

that will always be time-endurance and testing. there are ground rules I don't play with, or play games. or like being forced or forged into something I'm not. I know abusive and I know safe, and I am a psychology expert, trained psychotherapist and study humans for fun, so I'll always be analysing things.

and I know red flags and I know ego, I know how to placate and please and pleasure, but will only do so, for a bigger and better reason than the mere act of seduction. which is without value and transactional to someone like me, I won't lie.

and I know every tactic in the book, for the book was written by someone like me, many lives ago, and my karma is being burnt for that book.

I will teach you things you never thought you'd know, and change your life in ways you won't ever be able to go back to before. I will blow your mind, sexually, emotionally, intellectually, on all levels, and I'll make your friends and family love me.

but I'll always understanding you and make your life better because thats what I do anyway, and people talk to me about things I will never share, as I keep secrets. I am jealous, of everything but, only because I am attached in a disorganised way, and working on that.(I won't even mention how man women or men don't know basic psychology of themselves). I also am a therapist , for my friends and family too.i should not be , but I am. I care, I listen, If you think I'm not listening, I'm still listening. sometimes I interrupt, because I have ADHD and I am horrible at resolute planning, or being "normal". but I don't want to be normal anyway. I need you to recognise and understand my shit, for that is what I do for everyone in my life, and I have helped more than I receive.

I'll probably accidentally give you therapy, but thats fine, because you will uncover your depths and find meaning in this. it's not something that goes bad unless you are fundamentally, evil, even the most abusive relationship I was in, was benefited from this process. yes he's still narcissistic, but he is self-aware. and did I benefit, never, just know the anatomy of self-proclaimed narc and I still can't hate him. will get my civil claim one day.

I will fuck your mind without meaning too. but thats because I fuck my own mind. but the meaning is made in the man- some find this highly offensive or personal (its not). I fuck minds by my own overthinking, or over perception on many levels of reality. so join the ride, or don't come along at all. because once the rollercoaster is in motion, I have no control of what may or may not happen. it's purely experimental.

I am experimental.

and the women who are judging me, are not any better.

look within, and shut the fuck up. self-improve and quit this jealous divide and conquer bitchiness. I HATE gossip, bitches, snitches and fakers.

I look to other women who are intellectually, physically and spiritually "individual". and find value in superior status to my own, which is something my narcissistic ex taught me.

I look for mentors, and teachers and people who will teach me how to improve myself, which I am fearful to reconnect after something is amazing and I can't give anything back of positive value. I am sorry I am working on that.

I won't devalue those below me, but I also need to be mutually benefiting from a relationship.

I dont drag people down, I may disappear if I feel I am doing this by mistake. I am flakey as fuck, and sorry for that. its anxiety and lack of perfectionism, so I am wrong and bad for this. I can change. will change.

if you can find value with my relation, personal professional or romantic, we can move into a symbiotic beneficial agreement based on mutual "terms". but many won't or cannot see this, nor do I impose my bullshit into the lives of randoms at this age.

I don't care if this is cruel, it's real.

I value loyalty, compassion, self-insight/awareness, someone who understands all parts-spirituality, metaphysics while still having intellectual & logical & analytical brain-sight.

I enjoy music, magick and learning new things.

I do not care about appearances I dont think ive dated based on one time. I do value connections and chemistry which is far-few between, I hate fakers. I smell insincerity miles away. but I do respect women who are well-presented, or beautiful, with hair beauty and makeup, I can't do this shit well, so I look up to those who are in professions who do it like art. I find them to be genius level queens who scare me.

I call out bad behaviour and make people uncomfortable if they are repressed. I will change you without even meaning too, I don't even need to date you. its just my presence, over time, amplified by the intensity of the dynamics.

I don't want simplicity, but I also don't need over complexity.

I value passion, independence, creativity, curiosity, problem-solving, deep-disscussions, shared adventures and some occasional risk-taking (lol), sensuality and sexuality for a common cause beyond physical pleasure. I like being taught but not micromanaged. I need my own independence, and need to be trusted with that. I hate being scolded for that like a child, or being pushed to change my ways to conform to societal values. which I will push back and refuse to do. which is not healthy. I don't adult like many others do, but I try to proceed in other ways. and learn to adult like normal people, accept me.

I also value myself, and how I can be celebrated, enhanced and improved vs. the opposite.

I give space, and have boundaries, and understand human psychology, sexuality and relationships in ways few others unless they are trained, can do.

I value MY time. so you can have space to value YOURS. I dont need to be in anyones pocket for a long time. I love being alone, and being around people who are stimulating, but draining people will be drained out of my life quicker than I intend. I am sorry for the people who felt I disappeared, when I was only trying to be 'fair', if I feel I'm a bad influence, I will work on myself until I'm not. I'm still working on it.

I also use this psychology awareness, to enhance communication, connection. you may or may not become an accidental guinea pig. I will be upfront that I am experimental, but that is part of the buy ticket and take the ride. lets work together. not apart.

I am coming from a place of love, and love is what I feel for my animals, which you will be adopting as children.which I want to stop experiments being done on. I love love, in all ways, but hate cruelty of animals and children, violence and suffering. I dont advocate justice, because I find life is fucking cruel, unfair and unjust. by default, so I focus on myself. what can be changed, and what I am able to do in my own locus on control. I will always find myself drawn to the outsiders, the misfits, the vagabonds, the misunderstood. I want to help people who are society, or socially, disadvantaged by trauma and mental illness, but only when I have ability to help myself.

I will not date anyone who is cruel to animals, outside of specify magical sacrifice, there is not any place for that. nor will I date or fraternise with anything or anyone linked or associated with pedophilia. I won't judge anyone on anything that are outside animal cruelty and pedophilia. I don't and haven't. I keep on good terms with every ex, bar 1 whom I only apologised too this year. it felt good to do that. I change my behaviour.

I am open, but also highly attuned to both logical, factual, empirical , scientific worlds, and spiritual, intuitive, psychic and the "collective unconscious". I walk in both these realms, and I am "conventionally attractive". which puts a lot of pressure on me, to be "stupid". I am always dumbing myself down to fit into normality, but I look ridiculous if I do that so I peacock my intellect.

I give up because I no longer care how anyone but MYSELF can see ME. I won't dumb myself down , but I can enhance you UP. prepare yourself for graded education, evolution and self-growth on mass scales.sorry not sorry.

that sucks for the people who want to be living vicariously through me, for making up to lost trauma years, for family who sold me out for the success I'd bring home, or fake trauma enmeshed friends, or whatever they want or need from me. I value my time and energy, and have given that in abundance, and if you want to be with nut only "one part of me that is alters". I can't provide that now. not sorry.

I have to work on something or not be in a dynamic at all.

I no longer can switch on demand to adapt for you, it will not be effective and that upsets a lot of people. especially now I'm sober. harder to handle this, as I see the world for its ways and why it is, more vividly. I haven't had alcohol for almost 2 months, although, I could drink, I haven't.

I can't do it, anymore. it, being, faking, my selves fronting to impress. I can't. I have no more left to give, and I'm expected by everyone to be a way I can't do it in the way they want.

I will go to another year long outpatient DBT, followed by 10 weeks of A-C-T therapy, and however many ECT OR TMS may or may not help. I'm told it won't (ect) work. but TMS, is something I am open too. but I am telling you, none of this psychotherapy, that will be based on dbt skills, day therapy, intensive skills training, recommencing my studying, and resuming "life worth living" will or can wipe the traumas I've "recovered" memories for.

I will also shut the fuck up, and tell nobody about this if you leave me alone, I told that to my family, and this is open letter to the watchers, stalkers and perps who read this openly as I track the hits on here and have 200+ visits a day every day for the last month. globally. no idea how or who you are but I think its the same people who called the police for the "ayreon song lyrics" seen to be a suicide not last October.

thanks for that wake up call, I have shut the fuck up, since December, more so now. I will burn the journals, or lock them up.

my recovery is not linear, not yet fully integrated and I trust nobody so I don't think my psychotherapy will be deep, I focus on things like ADHD AND my EDNOS. and dbt skills. I won't be talking about sexual traumas.

Saw that you liked Digital devil saga, what would you say your favorite character would be and general impressions you had of them?

Though I’m also curious about your experiences with the game as well, DDS is probably my favorite megaten games along side SMT 2. The style of the PS2 era SMT games are one of my favorites as it really portrays Kanako’s art style (which I collect anything embedded with his art).

Would have to say my favorite DDS Character is 100% Cielo, he is my husband fr. The English dub always confused with sudden accent when he like “awakens to his awareness” I suppose is how I would work it. But his goofy self is so cute.

I always did wonder what happened to his IRL counterpart but amusing with what happened to the other children in that project, I think it’s safe to say what happened to this poor individual 😔.

Among other games where the demon artist was active, I also enjoyed Devil Summoner Raido Kuzunoha. I do miss his character-design in the newer games, but I guess Soejima's art goes better with the times.

I have only ever played the english versions, that's why I don't know what parts they butchered, but I can only imagine. Still, I enjoyed it all and cried.

My two favorite characters are Gale and Argilla. They both have amazing VA's and I love the angst and tragedy surrounding them.

Argilla was pretty much love at first sight and after the game progressed, I mostly felt sorry for her, but yeah, she fits my type: nurturing, badass female characters.

Gale I didn't like at first, but when his feelings awakened, daaamn. It turned around quite quickly. I enjoyed his interactions with Cielo a lot.

What I found quite creepy was Heat's obsession with Sera. It's a 12-year old 🙈

HELLO HELLO MY SUNBEAMS. For most every category, there was an impressive turn-out for pitches, so I thought we’d utilize the weirdness of this year’s GIFTENING to give something new a try. The popular vote winner for each category will happen on the first day, but on the second, the winner will be chosen from YOUR PITCHES. Mostly those pitches will be to me. The exception is in Miscellaneous, where you’ll be pitching to my family, because what I want to do and what is most entertaining isn’t necessarily the same thing.

So! How will we do this thing? GLAD YOU ASKED. I’ll link you to a form in a minute with space for one pitch. Once you fill it out, you’ll be asked if you want to do another. There’s no limit to the number of pitches you can send in! But remember that if you submit multiple entries for the same category, you’ll basically be competing against yourself.

2020’s Top 10 List Part One!

So here’s a list that no one asked for of the top 10 anime series I watched this year. I wanted to put this in no particular order but I figured I might as well. I’ll also be doing my top 10 fanfics from this year and my top 10 books I read this year so stay tuned for parts 2 and 3!

10.) RWBY

Uuuggghhh I really didn’t wanna put this on here… but I really didn’t watch much this year so I had to I guess :(((

I’m really not liking this right now… if my blog wasn’t sort of popular because of my rwby oneshots I’d consider just dropping the anime all together….

(I’m seriously debating on whether to watch the new season or not)

Honestly, the only thing bringing me back is my unhealthy love for Ozpin, Torchwick, and Ironwood.

Honestly, I’d give this show about a 3 or 4/10…

I used to love it so much but I think the quality of writing is going down and the show is trying to be too many things at once that I’m just losing interest.

9.) My Hero Academia

Why is this so low you may ask? Well, cause I think my main hype coming from this is the manga.

Yes I love the show, the animation studio is freaking amazing and the quality of animation never ceases to amaze me. But I love the manga a bit more.

This will probably jump up in rating around season 5 or 6 but for right now I’ll leave it in the 9th spot :)

8.) Sirius the Jaeger

Oh my GOSH, I want a second season so bad. One of my favorite OC’s I’ve ever made was for this anime (it’s Idris Tana btw) and I actually commissioned artwork for her recently and it’s SO PRETTY.

Anyway getting off-topic, the animation of this show and again with the dark and grittiness of it is what drew me in.

Actually, my late grandma and also my great aunt tagged me in a Facebook post with the trailer when it first came out cause they saw vampires and thought I would like it and that's what got me into this show in the first place.

So thank you grandma and auntie!

But I absolutely adore the soundtrack, the mix of orchestral pieces mixed with the more electro-kinda-vibes is my life (seriously go listen to “The Beginning of the Hunting” it changed my life, as an orchestra and cello geek it made my heart so happy)

7.) Tokyo Ghoul season 1-3

Ok, I’m currently reading the manga after I’ve seen the anime and lemme tell you I wish they didn’t censor the anime so much.

I can’t even find an uncensored version anymore and it makes me so upset.

The darkness and goriness of the manga is what appealed to me in the first place (yes I get weird looks for it, no I will not change my mind)

Kaneki is my CHILD and he CANNOT do any wrong. I don’t care who you are I love him

6.) Ajin: Demi-Human

Uuuggghhh to be honest the anime is kinda meh but my love for the manga is so great I am legally obligated to put this here.

Don’t get me wrong, the animation and soundtrack for this show is phenomenal and I think they got Satou down pat.

But they did dumb down and cut out a lot of interesting scenes. Scenes like how Satou takes down some of his opponents (which I can see why... many American viewers would most likely get offended by it… you manga readers know what scene i mean)

Nagai Kei turns into a bit of a whiny character instead of the smart but exasperated teenager I know and love in the manga is the anime version of Kei going to bite off his own fingers in order to climb a wall into a military base?? Definitely not. Would manga-Kei do that? Well, he already did… so... yes..,

Nakano Kou is still kind of funny but he is so much more fascinating in the manga (his backstory breaks my heart).

5.) Bungou Stray Dogs

Another new one that I was actually recommended by my friend @bright-like-the-sun-00 :) I ended up watching it originally in dub but then went back and rewatched it in sub because I love my children so much.

Chuuya is my bean and I love my OC that I created Charlie Dickens :)

(if you guys could go read her story I’d be eternally grateful).

Anyway!

This show has a fantastic cast in both Japanese and English and the music score is one of my favorites. The characters are so wonderfully hilarious and interesting and fhajxbqbaka I love this show okay??

4.) Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

I actually put this off for YEARS because my oldest step-brother kept saying I should watch it. At this point, I was refusing out of spite cause I’m petty like that. But I finally started watching and-

GUYS

I have never gotten so attached to a character (cough cough Giyuu) so quickly.

I have been listening to Gurenge and Kamado Tanjiro no Uta on repeat for literal weeks now and I still grin like an idiot when listening to them. I also have a potential OC/crossover coming out soon sooooo…. stay tuned??

I also broke my sister cause I showed her a post that said national donut day and had a picture of Rengoku on it… I didn’t understand it until she explained it to me and now I cackle every time I think about it.

3.) Jujutsu Kaisen

@plusultranerd got me into this blame her for the future spamming of your dashboards

GUYS GOJO SATORU IS MY LIFE NO QUESTIONS ASKED

He could literally murder me and I’d thank him. He is the prettiest anime character I have EVER SEEN and I love him so much.

Anyway anime. The show got my attention from the get-go. Itadori is such a fun main character and Megumi is me cause you know dogs.

I think I saw an ad for it and since I have Crunchyroll I figured why not and fell in love with it

AND THE ENDING SONG

BEST ENDING EVER YOU CANNOT CHANGE MY MIND

I put it on sometimes so me and my sister just start jamming out to it and we get the stupidest looks and it is amazing

2.) Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Another anime that I will rewatch over and over again until literally the end of time. Also, another series that I’ve already read/or am reading the manga.

Alphonse Eric is my cinnamon roll you can pry him from my cold dead hands.

I actually am buying the special edition hardback manga covers that are coming out and I LOVE THEM

THEY ARE SO PRETTY

Am I talking about the characters or the manga?

My answer is yes

Anyway, all of the characters in this are so wonderfully complex and have motivations and i fall in love with 99% of the characters (except for Shou Tucker, I even like Father actually)

1.) Death Parade

This has got to be one of my top favorite anime of ALL TIME.

I rewatched it early this year and this is one of the very few anime that will get me to cry and this makes me cry every freaking time.

The music is stunning, the animation is magnificent.

For being based on an animated short film, this has such potential for a second season and such a complex storyline was packed into 12 episodes.

I will forever recommend this anime to literally anyone who is looking for something new to watch.

I’m also noticing I have a thing for white-haired male anime characters with really pretty eyes….. Kaneki… Gojo… Decim...

Darker than Black

I didn’t rewatch the whole thing this year but this anime is literally my life. Hei is such a bean and I love him.

Hunter x Hunter

Another anime i didn't rewatch completely but still adore :) I heard they’re continuing it and I’m excited for the dark continent arc!

Dororo

Technically i watched this late 2019 but whatever; I do what I want. The animation was absolutely gorgeous and I loved the gritty darkness of it. Mio will forever be my favorite character; you cannot change my mind. Some parts I did find a bit boring but overall I’d rate this a solid 6/10!

The Devil is a Part-Timer!

I rewatched parts of it and not the whole thing, I also have the first two volumes of the light novels and I forget how funny it is until I actually watch it. It has me laughing every time and never fails to put a smile on my face :)

The Anime Community has a FUNimation Problem. Full Stop.

In Prison School’s seventh episode, Anzu Yokoyama’s dialogue with Shingo Wakamoto has her calling out his attempt at talking to a woman and kicking starting a fairly obligatory romantic subplot. The English Dub, up to that point, had all the hallmarks of FUNimation’s script writers playing off the already existing comedic aspect of the title. Some disapproved while other embraced it.

However, the dub would go a step further by having Anzu’s emasculation of Shingo involve a reference to the then ongoing Gamergate controversy. If anybody knew of the movemen then, you’d know this wasn’t a good idea. Every geek and their mother took offense to it right out the gate, claiming that it was FUNimation “shoving politics” where they don’t belong and insulting their fans.

To play devil’s advocate, Prison School as a whole is all about young men being integrated into a formerly all-girl school with all the sleazy shenanigans that the title’s become infamous for. It’s already pretty provocative in terms of visuals and how it pushes the envelope on its fan-service element. Something the dub team were keen to embrace with all of the dialogue reflecting this tone.

Yet Tyson Rinehart was raked over the coals for what was suppose to be an edgy joke for the sake of it, not unlike a lot of Prison School’s humor. Bare in mind that it within was one scene in the seventh episode out of a twelve episode Anime. We don’t get any other references to Gamergate like Anita Sarkeesian or the like in any other scene of any other episode. It’s just... this.

Yet even now when the line was redubbed to remove the reference for the home release, you’d think that this one line is all the dub is. That it’s akin to Shin Chan or Ghost Stories where the dub team wrote their own story and made jokes out of every kind of current event controversy because that’s what gets the lulz. Yet, again, it was just one scene in one episodes out of the twelve.

Of course, the cycle seemed to begin again with Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid which had a more... small scale kerfuffle in regards to the titlular human character claiming that, “I’m not into women or dragons.” Ironically, Jamie Marchi claimed she wrote that line since something like, “But I’m a woman,” came across as homophobic to her. However, I wrote my piece on all that.

What really got the wider community all up in arms was in regards to the character of Quetzalcoatl AKA Lucoa, specifically a single scene where she and Tohru exchange dialogue for less than ten seconds at most over her more conservative attire. Lucoa is pretty much THE fanservice character with breasts big enough to nearly suffocate a little boy in his sleep. Yes, that did happened.

Lucoa explains her more conservative attire as feeling uncomfortable with everybody looking at her in her other revealing outfits with the official subtitles by both Crunchyroll and FUNimation at the time. The dub would take it a step further so to speak by having her claim that she changed clothes because of “pesky patriarchal standards” getting on her nerves, something a tad different.

Well, I say, “different,” in the sense of what she’s referring to in regards to why she changed her clothes. The sub has it come out to “everybody” in a general sense like men, women and children alike while “patriarchal” is more specific in referring a societal phenomenon. However, that’s not what fans got in a tizzy over. The word, “patriarchal,” is the real focal point for this scene’s controversy.

It’s not secret that this word is thrown around most Feminist circles to the ire of geeks who “just wanna have fun” and hearing this word alone set off all the alarms. Like with Prison School, FUNimation was accused of trying to push a political agenda using Anime as Lucoa’s line was spread across the community.

By now, I’d like to be frank in how this all feels overblown. Using a word that’s common in the Social Justice lexicon can stick out but the idea that it turns the dub into political propaganda never made sense to me. I mean, it’s one thing the entire scene was rewritten to recite some kind of feminist manifesto but it only mentions the “patriarchy” and... that’s about it for this one scene alone. :/

I’d bring up “My First Girlfriend’s A Gal” but I feel like the points I made with Prison School largely apply here. However, I feel like some fans are hypocritical in how they claim that the dub’s dialogue is “inaccurate” when most enjoyed the dub for how it nearly went full Ghost Stories. Many felt that the dub was spicing up an otherwise by-the-numbers Ecch Fest that people would’ve written off. :P

Yet along came Episode 7 and the usage of the words of “SJWs millenials” among others was enough to make the dub “propaganda” in the eyes of many. Despite the fact that the script does convey the spirit of the original with the cafe manager trying to get the female cast into reading smut to nerd without their consent. What does that matter when the dub uses terms like “cuck?” :/

What about the voice acting? Doesn’t matter. Anzy referred “Gamergate.” That’s all that matters about Prison School’s English dub now and forever.

How well does the dialogue hold up on the whole? Doesn’t matter. Lucoa mentioned the “patriarchy.” That’s all that Maid Dragon’s dub amounts to.

Is it enjoyable in any way aside from said foibles? Doesn’t matter. The mention of “SJW millennials” in that one scene has now tainted the dub. Oh, the shame.

Starting to get the picture? I don’t want to be the guy who says dubs should go off doing as they please with not consideration for what the original’s narrative was trying to convey. Even if the occasional liberty can be intriguing, it’s always better for an English dub to keep the story in line with their source material. I, of course, type this for those who actually approach any dub in good faith at all. :/

The problem comes when the examples described above are weaponized by those who never had good faith in dubs and/or had it out for the likes of FUNimation to begin with. It’s not about discussion. It’s about propping up their bias of dubs being trash at best and trying to falsely villainize a company for making mistakes that ultimately amount to a handful of off-sounding dialogue.

By all means, discuss how those like FUNimation could improve on things such as where their streaming services are available region by region. Discuss how dubs like Danganronpa and Phoenix Wright recast the characters from the VAs in the games. Discuss how good or bad their script writing can be when it leans more loosely. All this fearmongering and vitriol does nothing but poison the well.

But weren’t these choices in adaptation politically motivated? Hell no? There’s a different between humor made in fairly poor taste and trying to brainwash your audience into believing, what, that women have problems? It’s not propaganda when you recognize it right away. And while Tyson Rinehart and Jamie Marchi responded rather rudely to the backlash... can you blame them with all of this?

I say this not to “kiss up” to FUNimation. Much as I admire their script adaptation process like the nerdy nerd I am, there can be times where I do feel they might’ve missed the mark. Particularly with their earlier dubs of the Dragon Ball franchise where they were borderline 4kids. However, dubs such as Fairy Tail and My Hero Academia are modern examples of how far they have come.

This mentality of holding grudges over fairly small potatoes that personally offend you gets us nowhere. I mean... isn’t it like the stereotypes SJWs are known for. A piece of media does something offensive, however big or small, and is deemed problematic forever by purity crusaders. Can’t we take a joke? It honestly gets to the point where I kind of have to quote Anzu Yokoyama here:

“Do you have a stick up your ass or are your one of those Gamergate creepshows?”
