Causes Of Eating Disorder | Solh Wellness App
Eating disorders, like mental health, are still not taken seriously in today's world. In some ways, it is a mental disorder in that an individual struggles with his eating habits as a result of mental stress. According to studies, this disorder affects about 9% of the world's population. The underlying cause of this complex illness varies depending on the individual's biological, psychological, and environmental factors.
Tumblr media
There are several types of eating disorders:
Understanding the various types of eating disorders is critical in order to understand their causes. Various researchers have classified it into 8-12 types over the years, but it can be generalised into just three categories for ease of understanding.
Anorexia: When a person becomes obsessed with their weight gain, they attempt to reduce it by avoiding food or starving themselves. It is most prevalent in young people who are preoccupied with their body type.
Bulimia: Similar to Anorexia, people with this disorder go to extreme measures to avoid gaining weight.
Binge Eating Disorder: People who suffer from this condition use compulsive eating to cope with stress and depression.
Eating Disorders and Genetics:
Individuals with an eating disorder family history are more likely to develop the illness on their own. According to twin study research, genetic influence accounts for 40% to 60% of the risk of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. As people grow older and observe their family environment, they form eating habits.
Eating Disorders and the Environment:
Trying to fit in with social norms has undoubtedly harmed a large number of people. Believing that attractiveness equals thinness and going to great lengths to achieve it is a major contributor to the emergence of eating disorder behaviours.
Unforeseen Tragedy:
An unexpected accident or death in the family can cause stress and anxiety. Depending on the individual, it can lead to compulsive eating or purging habits. People will go to great lengths to get out of a depression.
Conclusion:
Many people still regard eating disorders as taboo or refuse to recognise them. It is treatable, like any other illness, with proper counselling and treatment. If you are struggling with an eating disorder and want to break free from the cycle, please contact Solh Wellness.

People always talk about how Laios is a character who gives fat vibes even if he isn't technically fat in canon which is very true, and I have some thoughts on that!! (this will be a long post lol sorry)
There's a lot of material in the dunmeshi extras that show how fatness factors into dungeon exploration, which shows that only the most skilled adventurers are able to keep weight on while in the dungeon (thank you to @savaralyn2 for the translations! links to the individual posts these panels come from are added on the pics):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So we know, at the very least, that most of the characters are kept thinner than they would be naturally through the strain of death/revivification in the main dungeon. We also see that Laios has some fat on him, which through the text means that he's skilled enough to at least keep some of his weight (which makes sense, he doesn't die very often in canon).
Tumblr media
(to be clear this ^ doesn't constitute as "fat," he is built as fuck here he just has some fat on his body which shows his prowess as a fighter in this universe) HOWEVER my personal little pet theory/headcanon is that Laios actually has a difficult relationship with food! I know that doesn't make much sense at first since he's shown to eat a lot in canon, but hear me out. In pre-canon, before he reunited with Falin, he's shown to be extremely gaunt:
Tumblr media
But after partnering up with Falin, he gains weight and looks much more healthy very quickly. Part of this is definitely because of his unstable living situation/mental illness, but he and Falin still live in very poor conditions after this and he still manages to gain weight/get healthier, so I believe it's mainly due to her making sure he eats enough. We also know that Laios is. most certainly autistic. Nobody argue with me on that it's like pretty much widely accepted as canon for a lot of reasons lmao. So my theory is that he's actually food sensitive. He's shown to not really care about food that isn't monster-related. Even when he eats regular food, he's usually imagining it being a monster instead.
Tumblr media
He has never eaten squid before, which is totally normal, but could also support my theory in a way :P it being a monster still can't save it from the autistic sensory bad experience in this case, though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I think that his adventurous eating during the course of the story isn't because he's actually an adventurous eater normally, it's purely because of his special interest (monsters, duh). During his journey to recover Falin, he's able to build up a healthier relationship with food through Senshi's guidance and the involvement of his special interest.
By the end of the story, after he's retired from dungeon exploration and living in comfort/safety, and with his newly healthy diet, he's finally able to gain a lot more weight. Imo, his is a story of someone who's naturally meant to be fat, but is only able to reach that point when in a stable and healthy environment.
Tumblr media
(for the record I know he's not that fat in this post canon comic, but this is only a year and a bit after the end of the story so there's still time lol)
alright I'm goin back to drawing now just had to infodump for a minute ✌️ keep it sleazy

I'm listening to a lot of Maintenance Phase (bc I love it) and this comes up sometimes, so I'll just be sat here thinking about how common it is for little kids to grow up watching their moms and other women in their life jump from diet to diet. Just as ambient background noise in your childhood, the adults around you obsess over calories aloud, express guilt over eating enjoyable food, frame exercise as a form of punishment for eating, and so on.

When I was getting my diagnosis, my psychiatrist told me right after giving me my prescription that I need to consider eating food a part of my medication, and that flipped a switch in my brain that oh. Maybe willingly starving myself and eating only one meal a day isn't healthy.

There are four main types of Batfam fans in regard to how people interpret Bruce Wayne as a dad (/Joking. This is mostly satire and should not be taken seriously):
Fans that think Bruce is emotionally constipated and isn't the best at being a parent but still tries (Differs per person). Don't necessarily think he's absuive but thinks he can be toxic or have unhealthy expectations for the Robins. Can smell the Oldest Daughter Syndrome coming from Dick and have Family Line (By Conan Gray) as their top song on their Dick inspired playlist and Daddy Issues (By The Neighbourhood) for Jason.
Fans that choose to believe Bruce goes to therapy in their own canon. Love B:WFA. Thinks the comic can be cheesy at times and so find a balance between B:WFA Bruce and Please Go To Therapy BruceTM as their middle ground. He struggles. They advocate that Bruce is not a bad parent, he just has bad writers that seem to forget Bruce wouldn't hurt kids, especially not his own. Love the humane moments and scenes he has in BTAS and the early JL cartoons. He may not be perfect but he's not literally abusive. Whores for Bruce being able to admit when he is wrong and for Jason and Bruce reconciling. I recommend Grow As We Go by Ben Platt for this one.
A mix between the first two. Was fine-ish when Dick was younger. Didn't help him in the healthiest way but eh. Still emotionally constipated but that happened more so after Dick left and Jason died. Started getting better when Tim came back but was still closed off. Should probably go to therapy with the kids so they can drag his ass about all the things he's done that have actually affected them negatively. Understands his mistakes and is also able to admit when he's wrong, eventually. It's not easy but he starts to do better and learns to be more emotionally available. Still has to get chewed out by Alfred sometimes but definitely better than he used to be and it shows. Reconciliation is slow and gradual but progress is made for everyone involved.
The one's I personally avoid for my own sanity and wellbeing:
Think Bruce is a complete bastard and abuser. Want him to choke. Hate any and all interpretations of him. Some of which will refuse to understand how anyone could have a different interpretation. Will point out comics where, in all fairness, he is a dick but forget that characterisation can significantly differ from one series to the next, as comic characters are constantly passed around to different writers and have been for decades. Not to mention movies, shows, etc.
#Bruce Wayne#Batman#Batfam#Batdad#I'm not tagging everyone in the Batfam I can't be assed#Sorry there's like 500#Bruce has a child for every mental disorder he has#Dick is his ADHD. Jason is his C-PTSD. Tim is his Anxiety. Cass is his OCD. Damian is his Autism.#Like bro the therapist is RIGHT there#You have the money just GO#I am a mix of 2 and 3 tbh but more so 2 because he is my comfort fictional father figure. I already have a shit dad irl#I'm not dealing with it in my favourite media too#Type 4 fans scare me I lowkey see so many people like that and I'm like. If the block button wasn't free. I'd be in debt by now#I get that you saw Tom Kings work. So did I. I hate that fuck. But I personally prefer the scene of him in JL with Ace on the swings#Or the one with him playing with shape block toys with a baby whilst Supes and WW handle the questioning#Or when he hugs literally any of his kids#Or the one of him and Jason watching a movie and eating popcorn when Jason's ill. And they have the picture of them posing#Or when he cried in Flashpoint over the letter his dad left him because the little boy in him needed that#Plus any time Bruce and Clark interact as Best Friends. The Golden Age comics where they were basically Dick's gay dads 💀#But yeah. I could make a poll from this tbh.#This is a generalisation on purpose genuinely do not take it seriously#If I see ANY disclosure. It's delete and block on sight#Bruh I'm still recovering from the notes of my Fallout 4 John Hancock in a Drag Race outfit crossover post#I know it sounds like I'm being paranoid but that's because I am. You have not seen the things I have seen in my notes#You do not know of the wars I have fought of over ghoul dicks and high heels#I have seen things I can never burn from my vision. Read things I will never have the mercy of forgetting#Over silly little shitposts. Lmao. Anyway. Here. Have some food.

@togrieve4 put the idea in my head and now i can't stop thinking of theo being there when rakiel meets king harnant. of theo seeing how this man, proud and dignified the way a monarch has to be, cracks the moment his son's illness comes into play. how he broke down a door to see his child and how he has been counting the days since he last saw him. how it breaks his heart to have his kid hide away in his room but cannot bear to be cruel enough to force him out of it.
theo who went to beg his father to not humiliate his brother in front of thousands of people, to not be so cruel as to make his defeat a public affair to be gossiped about only to be immediately dismissed. theo who basically gave up on life and spent a year hidden away in his palace with an eating disorder that would've probably killed him if rakiel hadn't intervened. theo who must've known his father kept tabs on him,,, and that he never bothered to do anything about it.
i'm just. i'm thinking thoughts.

Eating Disorder: A Threat To Life | Solh Wellness
We frequently act in unhealthy ways unintentionally, like when we eat when we're feeling sad or stressed out. It happens that we forget about these bad habits because we are so deeply involved in the cycle of anxiety and binge eating. Not to mention the severe damage these communities have inflicted on us by enforcing diets and idolising thinness. In an effort to achieve a certain body type, people occasionally engage in risky behaviours as a result of these conventional notions of beauty. The vast majority of people fail to recognise the many harmful effects of binge eating and the obsession with achieving a certain body type. The fundamentals of unhealthy eating patterns and eating disorders must therefore be understood immediately.
Tumblr media
What if you believe that the only things causing your eating disorder are a strict diet or episodes of binge eating?
Uncontrollable eating habits that are bad for your health, emotions, and ability to function on a daily basis are the main cause of eating disorders. Eating disorders are frequently characterised by obsession with food, weight, and body image, which can result in unhealthy eating patterns. In addition to other health issues, eating disorders can harm your bones, teeth, mouth, teeth, and digestive system. Your body's ability to absorb nutrients may also be hampered by these unhealthy eating practises.
Despite the fact that they can appear at any age, eating disorders frequently do so in adolescence and the first few years of adulthood. With the proper support, you can regain your capacity for healthy eating and, in some cases, even reverse serious side effects brought on by the eating disorder.
Depending on the disorder type, eating disorders have a variety of symptoms. Binge eating disorders, bulimia nervosa, and anorexia nervosa are the three most prevalent eating disorders. Other eating disorders include, for example, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder and ruminative disorder.
Anorexia nervosa
The severe eating disorder anorexia nervosa, also referred to as "anorexia," has the potential to be severe. Atypically low body weight, intense anxiety about gaining weight, and an inaccurate perception of one's size or shape are its defining characteristics. Anorexics work extremely hard to maintain their weight and change their body composition, often at the expense of their health and ability to function normally.
You might severely restrict your caloric intake, exert yourself to the fullest extent, take laxatives or diet pills, or even vomit right after eating if you have anorexia. Dieting can harm your health and even cause you to starve yourself, even if you are underweight.
Bulimia nervosa
A severe eating disorder that can be severe is bulimia, also known as bulimia nervosa. Episodes of binge eating occur in bulimic patients who experience a sense of helplessness when trying to stop. Bulimics frequently only eat during the day, which frequently causes binge eating and purging to increase.
During these episodes, you frequently consume a lot of food and attempt unhealthy calorie burning. You might make yourself throw up, work out until you are physically exhausted, take laxatives, or use other methods to get rid of the calories out of shame, guilt, and a strong fear of gaining weight from overeating. Bulimic patients often have a fixation with their weight and body image and a propensity for self-criticism of their perceived flaws. You may have a normal weight or be a little overweight.
Binge-eating disorder
When you suffer from a binge-eating disorder, you frequently overeat (binge) and let go of control over your eating. Even when you are not hungry, you may eat quickly or consume more food than you intended to, and you may keep eating even after you begin to feel uncomfortable.
Following a binge, you might feel ashamed or guilty about how much food you consumed and how you behaved. The difference between you and someone who has bulimia or anorexia is that you don't try to make up for this behaviour with excessive exercise or purging.
Rumination disorder
Food is repeatedly and persistently repeated after eating in rumination disorder. However, the cause of the problem is neither a disease nor a different eating disorder like bulimia, anorexia, or binge eating disorder. Food is unintentionally brought back into the mouth without gagging, queasy feeling, or vomiting. Rechewed, swallowed, or spit-out food that has been regurgitated on occasion. If the person spits out their food or eats significantly less food to stop the behaviour, malnutrition may be the result of the disorder. Rumination disorder may be more prevalent in young children or people with intellectual disabilities.
Avoidant/restrictive eating disorder
This disorder is characterised by a failure to consume enough food to meet your daily minimum nutritional needs because you are bored with eating, you avoid eating because of the colour, texture, smell, or flavour of food, or you are worried about the consequences of eating, like a fear of choking. You don't starve yourself because you're concerned about gaining weight. This disorder may cause a child to lose a lot of weight or fail to gain weight, which can lead to nutritional deficiencies and other health issues.
Causes
Like other mental illnesses, eating disorders can be brought on by a variety of unknown factors, such as biological ones. Some people may be genetically predisposed to eating disorders. Additionally, eating disorders may be influenced by biological elements like alterations in brain chemistry.
Psychological and emotional health. Patients with eating disorders may experience psychological and emotional problems that make their condition worse. Possible outcomes include relationships that are strained, perfectionism, low self-esteem, and impulsive behaviour.
Risk factors
Compared to men, teenage girls and young women are more likely to develop eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia. Eating disorders can happen at any age, but they most frequently start in adolescence and the early 20s.
The likelihood of developing an eating disorder may be influenced by a number of factors, including the following:
Family saga: If a person's parents or siblings have eating disorders, they are much more likely to develop eating disorders themselves.
Other mental disorders: Anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorders are frequently present in patients with eating disorders.
Starvation and dieting: An eating disorder can emerge as a result of dieting. Modifications in mood, rigid thinking, anxiety, and decreased appetite are just a few effects related to the brain. Strong evidence suggests that many eating disorder symptoms are also signs of starvation.
Stress: Your risk of developing an eating disorder may increase as a result of stress brought on by change. Moving, beginning a new job, enrolling in college, or resolving a family or relationship issue are a few examples.
Anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts are possible side effects of eating disorders. Your growth might be constrained. You are more likely to experience these complications if your habits are severe and persistent.
Even though there is no reliable method to prevent eating disorders, the following strategies can help your friend or a member of your family develop healthy eating habits:
Avoid dieting in their presence: Family dining customs might have an impact on how kids interact with food. When you eat meals with your kids, you can teach them about the harmful effects of dieting and promote a balanced diet with sensible serving sizes.
Sit next to them and engage in conversation: As an illustration, a lot of websites spread untrue information like the idea that anorexia is a lifestyle choice rather than an eating disorder. Dispelling misconceptions like these and informing them of the dangers of unhealthy eating habits are essential.
Creating and maintaining an optimistic body image: Remind your child that there are many different body types, no matter what size or shape their body is in. Don't be critical of your own body in front of relatives or friends. By strengthening their sense of self-worth and resilience, they will be better able to navigate the challenges of adolescence. This is made possible by encouraging dialogue and disseminating messages of acceptance and respect.
If you notice that they are exhibiting symptoms of an eating disorder, think about talking to a friend or member of your family. Even if you are unable to stop an eating disorder from developing, showing compassion may persuade the person to get help.

question can you infodump about your Little Guys (atbb) to me because ive been following for like a year and i still dont totally understand them past papyrus au. they are really cool tho
oh my god ok so. first off atbb is the acronym for my ask blog @ask-the-bone-boys that's been on hiatus for a little over a year now. it was born in 2018 out of the annoyance of everything au-centered being sans and also a way to explore how the classic "aus get stuck in the original universe" fic trope would go if it was somebody from the "original" story leaving their universe instead. and also an excuse to make papyrus miserable to be fully honest
also also im going to preface this by saying i ship selfcest and there is some selfcest in this story ok if anybody has issue with that then uh. oopsies (i can explain the way i view it at another time if anybody;s interested but im already gonna ramble like hell here so not rn)
with that groundwork laid im gonna put this under a cut lmao dont click this
for the sake of organization- part 1: RUSS
STARTING AT THE BEGINNING so some very basic backstory for this Undertale Papyrus specifically is that he and his brother are twins, they grew up bouncing around several foster homes until they decided to run away to live in the woods on their 14th birthday, where they lived in a bigass tent for three years until Papyrus got badly injured and they had to get help from the townspeople, who uh kinda unofficially adopted them and thats how "they just showed up one day"
then more time passed and around 3 years after getting to the surface Papyrus was booted out of his universe by Mysterious Circumstances. he got a very bad introduction to the multiverse because the place he landed was my own version of horrortale, undermunch. there he meets Spooks!
i have a whole side-fic where you can read in better detail how this goes but basically monsters don't turn to dust in this world and also Spooks is a cannibal, which Papyrus doesn't know until he realizes he was fed spaghetti made out of a rabbit monster. IN addition to that, Spooks has very different magic from other aus, that being it's pretty much all concentrated into a kind of blue-magic-venom that comes out of his teeth like a snake.
Long story short Papyrus has to escape from Spooks somehow, and that's how he learns he's able to move through universes by himself. It still takes him a while to learn how to without being in a life-or-death situation, but that's ok because almost every other universe he goes to after that puts him into a life-or-death situation :>
and then FINALLY he gets spat out into a variation of Underswap, where he meets Honey. this one's a bit spoilery because i haven't finished writing this fic yet BUT its ok because this will be so so so disorganized. anyway so Papyrus is scared of Honey at first because he's been getting completely fucking obliterated by the multiverse (his leg is broken and he's wearing a chest plate he stole from a different papyrus who died in front of him) but Honey is relatively patient with him and lets him stay on his couch on the surface. This is where Papyrus gets the nickname Russ!
Russ is dealing with a broken leg when he shows up in this universe, so he stays with Honey for a little over three months while he recovers from that as well as (some of) the multiverse traumas he'd been collecting up to that point. The main things that he still can't shake are nightmares, trust/attachment issues, and EXTREME food paranoia. he refuses to eat anything he hasn't prepared himself, and even that can be a struggle. Also, because of how long he spent without getting it properly treated, his leg never fully heals.
He starts getting really really homesick the longer he stays in this universe. It builds up over his whole stay, but only starts to get Very Bad after he gets the cast off of his leg. Honey's home is extremely similar to his own home, and sometimes just seeing him and his brother interacting with each other makes Russ upset.
OH I FORGOT TO TALK ABOUT THE CODEPENDENCY ok so at some point Russ just starts completely clinging to Honey and Honey doesn't know what to do about it so he just kinda. unintentionally feeds into it and this turns into Russ sleeping in Honey's bed and blah blah blah eventually this becomes a problem for Honey because he doesn't know how to address Russ's homesickness and clinginess without hurting him somehow even though Honey is extremely stressed and actively burning out
Then Russ overhears Honey venting to Undyne and feels. crushed. And he reacts incredibly rationally! By avoiding Honey as much as possible! But it does not take him long at all to break down and the two finally have a chat about boundaries. They work out a plan together that Honey thinks will genuinely help and Russ thinks will get himself off of Honey's back. The plan is that they'll figure out how to control Russ's world-hopping ability and get him back home.
The idea is that if he's able to control when and how he leaves, he can control where he goes. Then, when he inevitably lands in his home, he'll pop back in Underswap and tell Honey how it went. Because he can control it! Of course!
Honey gives him one of his hoodies and a photo camera to remember him by. Russ tries to figure out what it was in the past that might have helped him jump universes, which was the desire to be just about anywhere other than where he was at that moment. So, he just, thought about going home instead!
And it worked! And he left Honey's universe! And then he realized he didn't land at his home at all! And when he tried to go back to Honey's universe, he went somewhere entirely different as well! And he never saw Honey again! Wahoo!
This is the point where he just becomes a complete mess I'm not gonna lie to you, he starts drinking even though he really really REALLY hates alcohol, he only eats enough to stay conscious, he gets into fights just for the adrenaline rush, and only stays in one universe long enough to confirm it's not his home before either leaving for the next one or collapsing somewhere and hoping he doesn't get attacked while he sleeps for two hours
then he lands in Edge's universe and this needs a part two now OOPS

hate that it's seen as a "good thing" when a fat celebrity gets their stomach stapled or gastric bypass and the narrative is "oh look how much SEXIER they are!" "oh look how much HEALTHIER they are" when they can't eat without throwing up now, or they're no longer able to metastasize nutrients because now they fit a size 6, as if: 1. it's more important to be small and lean than to be able to consume sustenance WHICH IS WHY WE FUCKING EAT and 2. FAT PEOPLE CAN BE, WILL BE, AND ARE SEXY without conforming to "acceptable body sizes"

i dunno why but kyle strikes me as the kind of guy to not wanna waste any food, especially at restaurants because he knows it’s just gonna end up getting thrown out instead of being given off or smth so whenever he goes over to a new person’s house (like someone not in his main friend group) or at restaurants he just tends to overeat to the point of being like-stuffed? is that the right word? he hates every minute of it but he also hates wasting food or having people think he doesn’t like what’s being served. he’s got a bit of food insecurity about that. but then he ends up feeling really awful afterwards
on that note, i feel like some of that does stem from parenting. love sheila, but i feel like she was the type of parent to be like ‘oh kyle you didn’t eat that much! are you sure you’re full? do you not like it?’ and then he feels bad and tends to stuff himself instead of actually eating in moderation.
so i dunno. angsty kyle hdc for your needs.
