I am begging everyone 25 and under to learn that you don't need a 5 paragraph essay on why a fictional character is Actually The Most Morally Bankrupt Evil Character Ever And Everyone Who Likes Them Is An Abuse Apologist Who Preys On Children or what the fuck ever. You can literally just say "I hate that character" and move on.

one more in the list of unrealistic things in the lightning thief movie was grover talking about annabeth like "that's annabeth chase 😨 she will smash you like a bug 😶🌫️🫨" like NO!!! grover has known annabeth since she was a little 7 year old gremlin on the streets. shes practically his sister. if grover had to describe or introduce annabeth he'd be like "oh that's annabeth 🥰 she's a little intense but she's a sweetheart once you get to know her" like some owner of an aggressive little chihuahua.

one thing i can't really wrap my head around in terms of like. fandom stuff is the idea of character death as an inherently bad thing. like a good well-written death is one of the best things that can happen to a character
"nooooo my fave died how can i go onnnnn" frankly? skill issue

I struggled for a while to vocalize exactly what bothered me about "comic fans" that never actually read the comics, but I came across a tiktok a few days ago that exemplified pretty much exactly it.
This girl was talking about how she loves the whole Nightwing killing the joker thing, instead of Bruce. Her first Tiktok, she just says that it says so much that he killed the Joker, but Batman never did.
People point out that Bruce tried killing the Joker for MONTHS, but kept getting blocked; first by Superman and later by Gordon, and he didn't really give up fully until Tim became Robin.
She doubles down, saying "Yes, he tried killing the Joker at first, but then later Nightwing just walks up and kills him in cold blood."
Which, again, is just not true. The circumstances behind Dick nearly beating the Joker to death was that he thought the Joker had killed Tim. He thought the Joker had killed his other brother as well. He was feeling the exact way Bruce did after Jason's death. This is also why Bruce administered CPR. He knew Dick would not be able to handle actually killing someone, even if it was the Joker. Especially not if he did it in such a heated manner.
People again pointed this out, saying; you're wrong, that's not what happened.
Her defense, throughout this whole thing?
"I never actually read the comics, you cannot expect me to read them, there are a hundred versions of events in comics, you cannot expect me to read them all. Why are you all bullying me."
And like; you don't have to read comics, but you cannot be seriously participating in a fandom while actively refusing to read the source material you're discussing, and then expect not to have people correct you.

In PJO, the main antagonist's primary villainous motivation was the injustice of the toxic cycle that was repeating itself through centuries. the same cycle of neglectful parents, and kids that tried too hard to please them, when they never cared, only putting the innocent kid in harm. the main antagonist wanted to rebel against this vicious cycle after his own traumatic experiences in the system.
In HOO, the main antagonist's primary villainous motivation was the fact that she couldnt wake up but she wanted to.
Both can be equally relatable, in different circumstances. One arc takes place as you mature in life, another takes place on Monday morning

gonna reiterate the idea that when a character says "im fine!" in rp or "its no big deal" we as the audience know that theyre lying but BUT other characters cannot know that.
you can be upset that nobody is there for your cubito in their dark moments, but saying that nobody cares is just plain wrong and angst spiralling. like the character can think that, sure. but you as the audience also assuming that? :|
the other characters dont know how much fred meant to tubbo, they dont know how roier and jaiden are still heavily grieving for bobby, they dont know that pac has certain traumas, they dont know that phil is losing his grip on reality, because, they are not mind readers, we are as the audience, but the cubitos are NOT

ngl the "im white so i dont talk abt any characters' race ever bc im afraid of accidentally saying something racist" approach to fandom is like. very weak. imo.
like first of all: i get that "i dont incorporate race into my media analysis because i'm afraid of messing up" comes from a different place than "i don't incorporate race into my media analysis because I Don't See Race 😊 there is only The Human Race." but it has the same functional effect, right? that effect being that your analysis of [INSERT MEDIA HERE] ignores the very real way that race impacts people.
second of all: it feels kinda lazy! like ur saying "i dont know enough abt race to feel comfortable commenting on how race affects this show and i dont care enough to learn." the only way to become more comfortable discussing race is to actually practice discussing race. but when i see people saying this it feels like they're saying "i'm white, which means i don't know how to talk about race, and i don't have to know how to talk about race, and i don't ever have to know how to talk about race, so i'm choosing to never learn how to talk about race."
third of all: just because you don't openly talk about race doesn't mean you're any less likely to accidentally say or do something racist. implicit biases run deep, y'all. it's probably already there in your interpretation of the show. but the "i don't want to accidentally say something racist" implies that you are positive that your interpretation of the show isn't racist. and i'm not saying you're wrong. but i'm saying that if a person of color tells you that something you said about [INSERT MEDIA HERE] was racist, you better be prepared to actually listen and not just brush them off because "i can't be racist! i purposefully never talk about race just to make sure i'm not racist!"
which brings me to my final point: if you do accidentally say something racist... literally just apologize. if someone says you've been doing something racist, apologize and stop doing that thing. it's literally not that hard. i've done it. i've seen other people do it. "i'm scared of being called racist!" is such a weak excuse im tired of it. getting called racist is not the end of the fucking world. calm the fuck down and grow a spine. jesus.
