WHY did you let this tank so hard???

Yeah it was a bit similar with Shum and Ahez, the dancer and Alvan felt completely disconnected from each other on stage but the song was so so good, Ahez sing about female empowerment and they sang in fucking Breton

You always cry and bitch for days when countries choose to sing in English and now France not only chose a regional, obscure Celtic language instead of French, but it also didn't do it's usual preppy, classy french shtick and if they only send french ballads each year from now on IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT is what I'm saying

This was one of the two songs from this year's Eurovision that I actually added to my playlist and I maintain that France was absolutely robbed. How are you going to hear ... well, I have no idea how to describe this style of music, but THAT! And in a minority language, too! And not give it any points??? Do y'all WANT more boring chansons out of France 'cause that's how you get more boring chansons out of France!

Aaaanyway, what I'm saying is this song slaps.

I had fun making a playlist last year, so I'm doing it again!

鳩間節 (Hatoma Bushi) is a japanese folk song from the Hatoma island. It's a very small island, culturally part of the Okinawa region, and this famous song describes how beautiful the Hatoma landscape is from the Nakamui forest, one of the highest points of the island where you can admire the comings and goings of the boats.

"Chant et Likembé" comes from the album "Chants de l'orée de la forêt", a 90s folk recording by Didier Demolin, which features music and chants from the Efe people. They are one of the pygmy groups living in the Ituri forest of Congo.

The Halluci Nation is a canadian band, who blends First Nations music with electro, dubstep, etc. They are very vocal politically, with songs actively speaking out about First Nations' plights. "Mother Mother" features other First Nations artists, and calls back to the relationship between land and people.

ዋሽንት (washint) is the amharic word for a traditional ethiopian flute. It is a very important instrument in ethiopian music, and shepherds and cattlemen use it daily to communicate with each other and call/direct their flock. The player here is Tasew Wendim, who founded the Moseb Cultural Music Band, which mixes ethiopian traditional music with ethiopian jazz and other music styles.

"Fulenn" was France's entry for Eurovision 2022, by britton artists Alvan and Ahez. The lyrics are entirely in britton, telling the story of a woman dancing with the devil in the forest without a care. Big pagan-electro vibes, and I genuinely it could have performed well, but Go_A had a similar number the year prior (also better imo, even if I think Fulenn is still a bop), and so we ended up on the bottom, saved only from last place by Germany.

Kulning is a type of herding call from Scandinavia, used mainly by women. While these voice techniques had originally a very mundane use, they seem to have acquired nowadays a very mystic aura, similarly to other kinds of nordic folk chants. This particular recording is from the album Lockrop & Vallatar, entirely composed of Swedish pastoral music.

Otyken is a Siberian indigenous group who, much like the others on this playlist, incorporates folk music and traditional instruments with modern styles. They apparently blew up on TikTok, but I'm not on there, so I feel lucky that I stumbled upon them, they're very cool! The song is named after a siberian forest spirit and mentions how sacred the forest can be.

手向 (Tamuke) is an old traditional japanese melody, that is played on a shakuhachi (traditional chinese/japanese flute), during funerals or commemorations. "Tamuke" means spiritual offering to the gods or the Buddha, and this piece represents a time of prayer, contemplation with the deceased.

So I'm aware this is not the most seamless playlist ever with these very different styles back to back, we are kinda playing whiplash haha!

But I actually really like how they all respond to each other in a way: flute pieces (washint and Tamuke), modern takes on folk music (Mother Mother, Kykakacha and Fulenn, although Fulenn feels a bit out of place politically lol), herding traditions (kulning and the washint again), deep bond with the land (Hatoma Bushi, Efe people, Kykakacha)... In the end all of them speak of one thing: in the forest we are not alone 🌲🌌

Ok I thought it'd be irresponsible to talk about Eurovision without speaking about Israel, I excluded Israel in all these rankings because no matter what you support you have to admit that they have broken international law and brought this years contest into disrepute (the reason they disqualified Russia in 2022) by harassing other delegates and if the EBU wants Eurovision to continue I think we need Israel banned until this horrible conflict is over and sorted.

05. FRANCE Alvan & Ahez - “Fulenn” 23rd place

Jk, The world was not ready. My body and soul absolutely were though and enjoyed every second of it. 

Preshow I instantly loved Fulenn for its franticness, its pulp and let’s be fair, it’s Alvanness. Retroactively I still love it for all those reasons with the added insight that it was a sensory overload bonanza <3

Remember when I said Halo almost reached Insane Asylum height of crazy? We’re here. Fulenn is esotheric weirdness on a stick. It only makes sense by following moon logic.

Fulenn is three minutes of Alvan forcefully exercising as much thirst trap appeal as possible (which: props for knowing your niche!), as the staging funnels as much attention as possible towards him. 

And with one look, all of Europe went wet. 

It is also three minutes of Alvan immediately eroding his sex appeal through the silly spasms and dryhumps he calls a “dance”.😍 

Fulenn is three mintues of Ahez exchanging fierce looks, generally exhuding slay appeal. (Marine especially deserves credit for that. Feisty little gremliness <3)

It is also three minutes of Ahez shrieking out animal noises and playing set piece to Alvan

Fulenn is three minutes of high octane ethnobanger EDM the sort Eurovision is know for. 

It is also three minutes of clobbering people over the head with druidic imagery because clearly the Breton language and instrumentation isn’t enough. 

Fulenn is three minutes of over the top staging spectacle

It is also three minutes of epileptic camera cuts, seizure-inducing strobe lights and haywire pyros.

Fulenn is ADHD come alive in a Eurovision entry. It’s not just that it was a trainwreck, but that it excels at being a trainwreck.   Alvan & Ahez pupated themselves into four agents of chaos and it was fantastic to behold. Is this where I point out Alvan got his throat tattoo a mere two weeks before rehearsals began? (Like I need to since you can clearly hear that he did.😍)

Like sure, France could have consolidated their forces, figured out a system and ironed out the flaws. Where’s the fun in that? It would have made Fulenn boring with minimal return on investment. (You’re not telling me there’s a universe in which a “competent” Fulenn does better than say, 14th place) Instead they allowed Fulenn blossom into Celtic Fusion Telemóveis territory, cementing it forever as an all-time great in my book. It was Chaotic Neutral incarnate, but that’s my alignment, so another win for me. Tanxugueiras could fucking never. 🙂

Also how does France have two Sterenns, let alone both being part of the same girl group?

the "problem" with loreen winning is not that she sang badly or isn't talented enough, it's that her song is generic and milquetoast. just because she is belting her lungs out doesn't make it sonically-interesting, it's something we've already heard over and over again on the radio. and it's completely fine to have such a song on an album or whatever but this is a competition where artists who actually try to do something creative and integrate lesser-known styles or artists who sing in any other language than english are often punished by the jury. songs with weird sounds or folk elements or hip-hop or anything other than bland radio music. countries can't properly share their heritage with the rest of the continent if they are restricted to fakemotional ballads in english.

yes kalush orchestra did win last year but we all know that was a political vote, even tho it shouldn't have been!!! that song absolutely slaps! it 100% deserved to win, but would it have won in other circumstances? look at the performance Go_A had the year before with a stylistically similar song (in that it dabbled in folk fusion) - the discrepancies between the jury vote and the public vote. or the absolute disgrace that happened to alvan & ahez - fulenn that not only was an incredibly catchy bop, but was also sung in a severely endangered language (breton). for once in their lives france actually /served/ and finished among the last. so, naturally, now they were back with their same old formula of edith piaf wannabees

i mean what are we even appreciating here? who even makes up these faceless juries?
