i know there are some (?) ads for it but i don't think this game has gotten a lot of /good/ advertising in general... the socmed department should be given a bigger budget or something. pol deserves attention- it's got phenomenal story and art design. also, i didn't mention it in the slideshow but the music, sound design and voices are immaculate they haven't had a single miss

Paper announced a new Nikki figurine, and I'd like to make a not-so-short rant on the subject - feel free to state your views on the matter afterwards

Disclaimer: this entire text is my opinion on the matter and in no way an irrefutable statement

This week another SN figurine was announced, with Nikki in an unknown Cloud-style outfit. I mentioned that before in other occasions in the community at large, but why is it that only Nikki gets anything outside of the game?

People constantly come to the quick conclusion that, well, Nikki is the protagonist and all so it's only natural that she gets most of the attention, but there's a noticeable difference between getting most of the attention and getting all of it. The only character to get anything at all outside the game - applies to both Love Nikki and Shining Nikki - is Nikki and, by proxy, Momo.

Earlier I heard in my server that "she is the protagonist, so she's the game's selling point" - fact is, Nikki alone isn't strong enough of a selling point. Anyone somewhat familiar with long-running gacha RPGs knows the other characters are often just as, if not more, important as the protagonist and appropriately, they get a share of the spotlight outside their games.

Think about other games in this segment I know which one you're gonna think about. While the protagonist's story is the driving motor of the game, what we actually hear/read most is the stories of the people surrounding the protagonist, and as a result the game becomes more of a collection of stories of interesting people, and said interesting people gets just as much attention as part of the game as a product as the protagonist does, to the point that often the protagonist is ignored.

Of course we don't want Nikki to be ignored, even though I personally have been finding her a bit flat as a character as of late. But consider: when was the last time we saw artwork of other characters in their birthdays or other big events outside the game (say, holidays) that weren't reflection arts or concepts? To be honest I've seen it around 5 times ever since TW SN was released - April 2019.

Likewise, I made that survey a few months ago, asking if you were interested in merchandise from anyone other than Nikki, to which the crushing majority said yes. And I know for a fact, half the community would be fighting tooth and nail for a Lilith figurine with a sparkly silver dress, or maybe Loen in some action pose [edit: my gf arrived as I was typing and added she'd kill for a figurine of the Goddess of Desire]. We could have gotten a short animation (even if it was live2D mostly) of Ashley's past which is a very popular story and honestly how most people even heard of Shining Nikki to begin with or some slice of life about Aeon and Marina taking care of the personality mirrors in the Ark. But instead, anything that isn't Nikki herself is neglected and treated as secondary even if in practice they are most of what makes the game.

In short, my point with all this is to express my disappointment with how a world meant to be rich and attractive is neglected and the game is treated as if it were only pretty clothes on a silly (affectionate) pink-haired girl. Of course the game would decline as it has been lately. We can have a dress-up with pretty clothes anywhere. Just ask Archosaur.

Listen I’m a veteran of the fashion gacha genre, I played Shining Nikki at global launch. I downloaded Life Makeover to chase a boy check it out. I am completely fucking floored at this game and what it offers. Act I Scene I I’m shitting myself over the character creation(!!!!) that is more robust than most triple A RPGs that can be changed at any time. Except for, you know, skin color because apparently that’s too fucking hard and a massive issue but I digress. I am then greeted by a compelling visual novel (standard to the genre) with NPCs with animation rigs and fully voiced cutscenes to go along with entertaining detective VN mechanics. Already a massive win, I’m hooked on the story and characters.

I go to the dress up studio and discover to my incredible delight this game has Fully. Modular. Dyeing. Design possibilities instantly become limitless. I am shown the photo taking studio. Fully rendered 3-D space you can move your model around to take advantage of lighting and camera angles. Glorious. Built in editor to tweak photos in game, no more shall I be forced to export to photoshop (I will anyway bc I’m a perfectionist). I’m throwing up.

They turn around and hand me a fashion DESIGN studio mechanic in which you can create your OWN clothes for ur little digital Barbie to wear including a system for drawing/designing your own fabric which I WILL be busting out my tablet for. This game feels unreal at this point. I’m fucking delirious and high on snorting HD rhinestones and glitter.

Game then introduces me to the housing mechanic which is. Not unique but like you gotta understand. It’s not just oh swap out this furniture’s pattern move around these cute little jpegs NO. We are talking a fully rendered 3-D space with high fidelity graphics that you can decorate yourself with interactive furnishings and sims needs we have stumbled into a completely different game at this point (and your model is still wearing whatever cute clothes you’re in to fully appreciate the obscene level of detail). There are apparently dozens of DIFFERENT house floor plans you can buy and explore. And then I discover you can visit other peoples houses when they hold community meals and there’s a chat and emote function and I realize in my bewildered haze I have somehow stumbled not into a gacha but a fucking fashion MMORPG. For your phone.

I’m lightheaded with glee. I haven’t even unlocked everything there’s more features. I’m in love. I think I am sexually attracted to this fucking game. We marry at dawn

i barely hit 5’0” and have wavy dark brown (almost black) hair that reaches a little past my shoulders. i have brown eyes, and a few small sunspots on different parts of my face. as for my build, i’m a bit chubby and curvy. what i wear varies on the weather but no matter what, my outfit will always include at least one article of black clothing (my mom complains that everything i wear is black). i wear casual dresses or shorts with thin cardigans in the summer, but usually my go-to outfit is just a plain or graphic t-shirt tucked into jeans, with a cute belt on. people often mistake me for being 5’4” because i’m always wearing my platform boots. i also have a vast collection of cute earrings. i’m definitely introverted. i wouldn’t really call myself shy, just quiet and reserved if you don’t know me that well. i have anxiety, which can cause me to come across as awkward in my first few interactions with a person. however, once you get to know me and we’re close, i’m very chatty and am happy to joke around, talk about my interests or listen to yours, or hear you vent and give advice! i’m pretty social with my close group of friends, but i do still have days where i would prefer to have minimal interaction with people and just have some alone time. i’m a pushover, not gonna lie. i can’t stand conflict, so i’m a pretty big people pleaser, and will do almost anything i can to make things right, even if i’m not the one who made them wrong in the first place. however, this means i bottle things up and can be really passive aggressive. i canNOT hide my emotions and wear them all over my face. whether i’m super excited about something or pissed off, you’ll know, even if i don’t want you to. in my free time, i like to read, write, play video games, and watch anime! i’ve adored fantasy and sci-fi stuff since i was little, so those are my go-to genres whether i’m reading or writing. for video games, i mostly play RPGs like pokemon or kingdom hearts, or mobile gacha games, but i also play cod zombies a lot. i also have an absurd amount of hours in animal crossing. i enjoy decorating stationary, too, like notebooks or designing monthly calendars! some miscellaneous info: in college, i’m double majoring in creative writing and computer science. i can be VERY competitive in both board/party games and academics. i can pace and zone out while listening to music for HOURS if left alone. i also infodump a lot and for long periods of time if you don’t stop me.

jack remembered you from back in college. the two of you never really talked, you weren’t even in the same department—he studied medical sciences—nor were you in the same year, but he had seen you around campus a few times and distinctly remembered you as attractive. he had always considered talking to you, but before he had the opportunity to, calamity struck, and he became a flesh-eating demon.

his memories of you soon faded into the distance, and he had nearly forgotten about your existence when he saw you again on an empty street at dusk. he instantly recognized you, and from there, he silently followed you home, watching you from afar.

it was just curiosity at first, a hint of nostalgia perhaps, but quickly it developed into something far darker, far more sinister.

the first thing he noticed was your looks, particularly your size. he liked how small you were. he’s grown quite a bit since college, what with being a demon and all, and he loved the idea of the size difference between the two of you. he didn’t have much of an opinion on your hair colour, though he liked the waves. he couldn’t see them too well from outside your window, but he did take note of your sunspots, finding them beautiful.

jack paid close attention to what you wore, and he had discovered a few things. namely, that platform boots looked good, and summer dresses with thin cardigans were exceptionally attractive on you. additionally, he liked that you wore earrings, and he’d remember all the different ones.

he was ecstatic to find out what you did in your spare time and just how much you had in common. he didn’t think the majority of people read anymore, let alone wrote, so it was a more than pleasant surprise to find out that you did. what was even better was that you liked the same genres as him. it was particularly delightful to him that you wrote, and he couldn’t help but read them in secret while you weren’t home.

he also quite liked video games and anime himself, especially kingdom hearts. he used to play a fair amount of cod zombies when he was younger, and even a bit of pokemon though he didn’t like it as much as other games. still, he found it relaxing to watch you play, in particular, animal crossing.

jack enjoyed watching you decorating stationary, but what he even liked more was taking them, having stolen one of your notebooks for himself, leaving you to wonder just how in the world you had lost it.

something jack really liked about you was that you were introverted. he, too, was an introverted person, not exactly shy either, but just not up for being around others constantly, and he found it relieving that you were the same way. still, he saw the way you interacted with your friends, and he longed for the day when you would act the same way with him.

he had mixed feelings about how passive you were. on the one hand, he hated how hard you tried to please others, especially how you’d act as a complete pushover for them when they clearly weren’t worth the effort or energy. on the other hand, that was exactly how he wanted you to be, just that he wanted it only for himself.

jack was good with being able to read people’s feelings, but he liked how obvious yours were; it made you all the more vulnerable to him. he also noticed that you could be passive-aggressive, though he didn’t think it’d be a problem for him.

he had also observed you pacing around, zoning out for lengthy periods of time, and it always made him curious as to what exactly you were doing or thinking about. he wanted so badly to know every thought on your mind.

sometimes the people around you would find out that you had much to say on certain topics. they wouldn’t always listen to everything, but jack would. he would mentally record each and every word you said. the majority of the time, he found the topic just as fascinating as you did. even if it was information he already knew, he realized that he liked it more after hearing you talk about it.

jack wanted you for himself; that much was clear. the only reason he hadn’t done it yet was because he wasn’t sure how to go about it.

he knew that you were in college, even double majoring, which he found rather impressive. however, he wasn’t well versed in terms of computer science himself. he admired the amount of effort you put into your studies and your dedication. he also found it cute how competitive you could be. as someone who went to college himself, though he didn’t finish it, he understood the value and importance of it to you.

and so he had a hard time deciding what to do with you. the monstrous side of him sought to simply rip you from your life, taking you away from everything that you’d known so that you could be his and his alone. however, he didn’t want you to be unhappy. he liked you so much partially because he thought the two of you would be good together, and forcing you into it would ruin the point.

ideally, you would be able to continue your studies while being with him, and so he decided that he would take you, bring you to him as gently as possible, carefully coax you into a life with him. hopefully, then, you will be able to resume your studying without a problem.

however, if nothing he did worked, or if you caused him to fear your escape, he’d give in to his impulses and decide your fate for you.

Cobalt Eclipse ask for ye: do any of your OCs play video games? And if so what’re their favorites?

There's a lot of them who do so. Country people would probably die of shock at the sight of a computer, let alone a video game. Mana does play, he usually sticks to FPS games or things in that genre, and he plays games like Mario Party with his little sister Vera. He refuses to play any game with his wife because she will destroy him. Feo and Reva watch him play but don't usually play themselves. Mana can and will rage-quit anything and he's probably broken so many controllers I PROMISE HE'S WORKING ON IT. Python and Jackson both play RPGs or MMOs. Aura and Cass would play horror games together while Sadie stews in their own misery. Ophelia and her band like rhythm games, but Ophelia plays calming, quiet games with her wife on occasion. Mervyn likes games like Animal Crossing and Unpacking. Blanc plays shitty quality 2007 flash dress-up games. He really likes Gacha Life too. Liam plays the Sims and if he leaves for two minutes Lucetta will kill every single sim and then apologize when he breaks down. Fizz plays Minecraft. They can only build and Vera will fight for them.

Alyona and Kira play Overwatch together and Kira's actually shockingly good at it. (She's a healer.)

Ezra would only play those weird math games that are "make all the combinations of yada yada". Stef plays cozy games. Riley plays Stardew. March plays Undertale.

kenma obviously and i think he's willing to try any game once - whether it's platformer, retro 8-bit style, romance visual novel, rhythm games, match 3, whatever. the fun is in the trying and seeing what the games hold, and who knows? he might find something he really likes!

he DOES have a few ultimate favorites tho he really likes pokemon go (which i maintain that EVERYONE has bc it's funny as hell that way) and mmmm i'd say some kind of rpg/mmorpg or story-driven game

(not including monster hunter bc we know he has that on a handheld already and i don't know if they have mobile games for that)

i think lev would be a big cookie run ovenbreak fan LMAAAO. it's a super easy gacha system and all the cookies have really fun designs and stories that never seem boring to him!! his favorite cookie is space doughnut cookie bc he thinks it's fucking hilarious that they have cookie aliens in the cookie universe

tendou really likes visual novels and will download every single one he finds, whether they're thirty minutes long or take days of playing through. he loooves a good story and cool art and being able to impact the plot, and isn't particularly picky about the genre - he just wants it to be fun!

osamu, fukunaga, and yukie are all avid players of food fantasy (which was developed by the same company who did love nikki dress-up) and if you've never heard of it i totally recommend it!! it's so much fun and has gorgeous characters/art and a fun story and fun events. i haven't played in a while bc updates can take up a lot of storage which i currently do not have (RIP) but it's the only game i consistently re-download other than candy crush and pokemon go LMAAAO

(yes it is about anthropomorphic foods. no i am not ashamed to admit i am in love with some of them. they are your friends and teammates and you can battle with them and it's SO MUCH FUN)

semi DOES play love nikki dress-up which tendou finds hilarious not because of toxic masculinity or whatever the fuck but because "eita HOW in the world do you get good scores you literally dress like a grandpa on our days off"

When Victor first heard of Miss. Love: King’s Choice, he was really put off by it---the title sounds ridiculous, the game mechanics doesn’t seem entertaining cuz really, why would he get excited over virtual cards?

stage 2: curiosity

Apparently the game is really successful, proven through the engagement on social media posts and promotions about the game online. 

The algorithm would constantly feature you---front and center with your beaming smile as you sat on a floral swing adorned in roses. It was your most iconic SSR . . .

aHEm forget his phone, he would still hear passerby talked about it---he would never admit how much his attention sharpened at the sound of your name whenever they talked about you, your elegance and courage found within your dates and chapters.

Eventually, he would download MLKC as a joke, ready to nitpick everything about it, internally promising himself to uninstall if---I mean WHEN it gets boring.

Although he complains about aspects of it, he never really did???

So how on Earth was he gonna find out about the mysterious, subtle mobile game Miss. Love King’s Choice??

The only pedestrians in the streets were an elderly couple.

When he sees you in Minor’s phone screen, he was concerned. He had two thoughts:

1) Minor played dating simulation games?

2) Oh no why does this virtual character look cute?

Cute was an understatement. How you cuddled with big fluffy dogs in your SR or how you were very much embracing the look of your long veil in your wedding SSR.

Gavin acted/tried to convince himself he wasn’t interested in playing MLKC but nevertheless, he would look over when Minor was doing the dailies in order to get a chance to have a glimpse of you.

“C’mon, bro, drop the act and download the game!” Minor said when he caught Gavin low-key eyeing over at his phone. “Do it and I’ll stop tapping on your girl’s forehead.”

Gavin glared. “Stop doing that.”

(but then how was he supposed to read the next dialogue?? Anywhere else would earn Minor sthg way worse than Gavin’s glare QAQ) 

If Minor knew what was good for himself, he gotta make it clear his favourite character was NOT you.

Gavin maaybe did some research about a certain character…

”Huhhh?? I didn’t know she could control flowers and plants???”

”Minor, there were clear hints: lilies grew where she walked at the end of chapter 2.”

Eventually, Gavin ended up playing the game. He enjoyed the moments where his MC player gets to save you in dangerous moments of the story.

He always associated you with cuteness until he read your Valentine SP’s Mind Quest his face is completely red aAH 

He was a bit defensive when people criticize your character though so watch outtt

i didnt really have an idea at first and then i thought of like. magicians. maybe theyre like. doing a promotional video or something for a franchise idk i didnt think this far but the theme of it is magicians and magic!! i was thinking maybe of having like two "schools" of magic, them being school of aura (emotions and other intangible things) and school of illusion (apparations and other tangible things)

mao and mama would be in the "aura" group (because. happiness. does this make sense) and then tsukasa and ibara would be in "illusion" i didnt know what to do for natsume at first but maybe he could fit in both schools of magic? hmm. now that im thinking about it maybe its a promo vid for some video game. yeah. (dont talk to me about ss or whatever happened in the shinsekai tour story thing. i know jack shit okay) BUT ANYWAY i think itd be cool if the shuffle name went something along the lines of aura and illusion.

going on with the thought of game promo video... maybe its like. an rpg? i was thinking maybe a visual novel but then my thought process went a bit too close to what was going on with date plan AtoZ so anyway! the promo vid would probably have them all be dressed in their characters' outfits but itd be more. ykno. cohesive. im trying to think of plot but aksjdhfmxcnbvnxzbcvmnb

hmmm.... while doing the promo video natsume has to act like his character but for some reason the way they want him to act feels stiff and uncomfortable for him. tsukasa would help him a lot with this i think (them also being leaders in new-di helps with the connection part of this) but im. im pulling blanks right now. uh. ibara and mao are there on the sidelines and their roles are pretty much fit for them and mama is having the BEST time there because his character is a paladin-type class and like. he gets to protect people and take care of them. ykno. a mama thing. uh. hmm. maybe the groups are not magic schools and theyre more of. domains (can you tell that im makign thsi up as i go) ranger mao and rogue ibara and fighter tsukasa. WHY AM I HTINKING ABOUT THIS IN DND TERMS. IM FINE> anyway maybe antsume is like. an artificer. thats a tricky class. like a craftsperson. finicky gameplay but satisfying once you get it right? my mind is all over the place. and the character natsume has to act as is very different to how he usually holds himself, like heart on sleeve bubbly character? every other character was a perfect fit for the other idols and natsume feels like although he's the leader that hes not fit for this job and hes like. his usual self about that when stuff happens like that. does that even make sense IT MAKES SENSE IN MY MIND!! its like when hes like all sulky and reserved i promise i know stuff about him but liike i cant think right now so TAKE IT this is all i have

Ever Crisis is out on PC now so I was able to take it for a spin.

30 GB, streamlined story but with more details than normal thanks to expanded lore added in, and the wild part is that it fluctuates between a modern take on FF7's og graphics and straight up FF7R for combat and big cutscenes. Note I tamped it down to Low graphics preset because I thought it was gonna be FF7R graphics 24/7.

Combat is much more streamlined as expected of a Gacha RPG. It's a combat energy system, auto-fires for base atk skill and allies fight automatically based on whether you are engaged in Offense mode or Defense mode (defense is more prone to barrier and heals, offense more often uses combat spells). The Gacha aspect here is more with the weapon spawning and the special event storylines which themselves yield special outfits and equipment. Note there's like 3 main campaigns at least from the outset: FF7, Crisis Core, and a Kid Sephiroth Prequel storyline.

The funny part to me is that revisiting it makes some scenes hit harder. Like obviously seeing Aeris/Aerith would hurt more but with Marlene calling out for her dad (Barret) only to freeze when she sees it is not him? The flashback memory of Cloud and Tifa from seven years before canon?

I'm also reminded of ideas I had when first playing the game as a kid. Like I had genuinely thought Sephiroth was a woman (long silver hair, black "dress", the villainous counterpart to Aeris) and was confused every time I saw someone call 'her' a man. I thought the President was a bodydouble at the Mako Reactor because I could not process the idea that a supposedly cunning businessman would be standing within range of attack with people trying to destroy his company. And I thought the LOVELESS billboard was for a perfume line or a musician.

All in all not as bad as I feared but it is a bit clunky thanks to how it loads up each area and battle. Maybe its my computer but I'm amazed that they made this for tablets. You probably need a $300+ tablet to run this thing.

Not sure if I'll stay interested in playing this but at least I got to try it out.

Dgjahs yeah but with a few caveats.

1) I don't like the character art direction of the new arc. The old character designs were so much better and unique and these new guys are thr most generic anime ppl I've ever seen in my LIFE

2) I have. Been doing my best to cut gachas out of my life. I spend entirely too much time on them and am not even really enjoying myself that much. There's like one or two I'm still chill with (because they're like. Fun and dont require me to spend a fuckin month grinding in f2p to make pulls) but I spent SO MUCH TIME doing busy work in UL that I made the decision to drop it unfortunately :(

Otherwise. I love unison league's premise and I REALLY wish there were more/better gachas with the same system! I vastly prefer putting my little character in cool outfits to having a weird harem or army or whatever. Like dgmw games like Pokémon Masters have absolutely given me deeper appreciations of the characters and Octopath COTC has a lot of new guys with interesting stories but like. There are waaay too many gachas out there that make character designs first and have their stories as a far second and I end up not giving any sort of a shit about them. Meanwhile with UL it's me the whole time baby! And I don't need a story to look at some clothes and go 'oooh I wanna wear that'! I want more RPGs with involved dress-up! I love putting ppl in funny little outfits!!!

Tales From The Frontlog: Fashion Dreamer

I was able to belt out this review so quick because there’s not much to Fashion Dreamer. I got this less than 24 hours ago. So. Neat.

Firstly: I love it.

You dress up, make designs, dress up other people, and make a little in home store front for other people to look at. It’s stylish and fun.

But it’s not a game I would recommend to most people. It’s a very repetitive experience. Which actually isn’t a complaint. It’s relaxing and I can turn my brain off like I can for Picross. But even though I like it, I’m hesitant to call it… great.

Fashion Dreamer is plain bread and butter fashion. If you’re looking for something with a lots of side activities this isn’t it.

Fashion Dreamer has a gacha like system for what clothes you’ll run into next. Either on billboards, homes, or on other people. And getting designs to make on your own requires either a gacha or special currency to unlock the recipe.

There’s also a bingo game? This earns you pink star currency which is used for your “home” and creating designs. It’s fine. It needs a “Use 10 at a time” option like the gacha has.

Honestly? The most fun part are the lookits. People can design your character and send you the look they made. I find this to actually be insanely cool. I love it. I enjoy making nice things for other people.

And people put in real effort to make nice things for you too. You can see the thought put behind the outfits and I find that to be very sweet. There’s even a little guide to see their preferences, though following it isn’t required. I gave folks free range for me because… I like all the styles. I’m curious what people will come up with.

Love Nikki (Which is an amazing mobile fashion game. I played that every day for 3 years straight) had supremely spoiled me. It has a lot of small things that makes it great. (On top of being an RPG) but Fashion Dreamer really could take a note and make a few tweaks to make it a better experience.

For example: There’s no favorites button and the max clothing you can own is 5000. That’s insane. Why??? I don’t want to hunt through 5000 clothing items for certain things all the time? Just add it as a filter! Gah!

Speaking of the filter: a color filter. The game clearly recognizes color. Make a god damn color filter.

Also no “closet feature” so you can keep multiple looks saved for the one muse. Like come on, that’s a basic function. You can have multiple avatars, but that’s not the same thing.

Fashion Dreamer makes up for this by apparently being updated with new clothing and looks monthly (for free). In either December or January there will even be an event. So that’s cool!

Normally games like this are quite… lazy about providing styles that match all tastes. The design aspect of Fashion Dreamer could be a lot stronger. But Fashion Dreamer in general has a really good spread of “casual everyday” styles. Also there are men in the game and men’s fashion both fem and masculine. That’s cool. You love to see it.

Though while the men can wear some of the fem accessories, hairstyles, etc (and vice versa), it still adheres to a gender binary. You can look somewhat ambiguous, but that’s different than being allowed to wear the dresses and skirts. Mostly just mentioning that because… it’s disappointing.

Also. Just a side note (Just mentioning this because it’s funny), I made my model massive. I picked the tallest option. I stan a tall queen.

Nearly everyone I’ve seen seems to prefer the little chicken nugget models. So I’m walking through this game like a god damn GIANT when I see everyone else’s avatars.

Overall Fashion Dreamer is solid. But it’s a game where you have to manage your expectations. Kinda like a lot of games like it. You have to be aware it’s going to be a chill experience. And that’s okay.

I tend to dress with a mix of cottage core with light academia, and sometimes dark academia if it’s colder outside.

My hobbies are piano, ballet, fencing, and video games, mainly rpg’s or gacha games(a great example being twisted wonderland)

I also enjoy mainly sweet or savory dishes, sadly I cannot bake or cook very well but since can do simple recipes. I do like spicy foods but my tolerance of it is low which means I sadly cannot enjoy a lot of it at a time.

The problem i have with the house sim in life makeover is that i have the sims on my computer (which has its own problems but) and this just does not compare. It's the same reason i don't bother with rpg mobile games. I can just play real rpgs that don't have gambling on my switch. But the high quality dress up games are limited to mobile games at the moment. So i'll endure your gacha elements for fake clothing but don't ask me to substitute real games for mobile game standards
