An alligator basks in the midday sun in the Okefenokee Swamp along the Georgia-Florida line. They call it black-water country, but in this sandy-bottomed stretch the water looks as red as cranberry juice owing to tannins from decaying leaves. photo: Melissa Farlow (1992)
I knew that this was a new bee for me when I shot it, but it only just got IDed on iNaturalist, 7 1/2 months later. I used to research my own IDs, but I've gotten a bit lazy about that since I discovered iNat, and also I realized how often I used to be plain wrong.

Aubrey McFadden Is Never Getting Married
by Georgia Beers (Author)
All of Aubrey McFadden’s college friends are tying the knot, and she’s been invited to five weddings. Five. In one year. Who wouldn’t want to celebrate so much love and romance?
Aubrey, that’s who.
She’s going anyway, of course. It’s not her friends’ fault her college boyfriend left Aubrey on the day of their wedding. Lies, selfishness, unhappy surprises…no, thank you. And you know who’s responsible for her permanently single status?
Monica, that’s who.
Their friends all say Monica Wallace had a thing for Aubrey back then—not that Aubrey cares one little bit why that still makes her heart race. Monica convinced her best friend Cody that marrying Aubrey, settling down, and locking himself into a 9-to-5 at the expense of his dreams would be a huge mistake. Cody called off the wedding, and Aubrey has never forgiven them.
Aubrey McFadden is never getting married, but she does have five weddings to attend, and she’ll be avoiding Monica at every single one.

There are many kinds of love stories. This one involves a woman and an elephant, and the bond between them spanning nearly 50 years. It involves devotion and betrayal. It also raises difficult questions about the relationship between humans and animals, about control and freedom, about what it means to own another living thing.
The woman in this story is Buckley. The elephant is named Tarra. They met at a tire store in California, and together followed a serpentine path from spectacle to safety: from circus rings to zoo enclosures to a first-of-its-kind sanctuary. But now their bond was being tested. For complex reasons, Buckley had lost custody of Tarra, and just before Michael struck, a jury had deadlocked on whether the two should be reunited. In a few months, the case would go to trial again. If Buckley won, she would bring Tarra home to Attapulgus. If she lost, it was possible she’d never see the elephant again.
The uncertainty was a nightmare. But the fence Buckley built for Tarra had withstood a monstrous storm. This was, she thought, a good omen.
Read an excerpt of the latest @atavist story, “Sanctuary,” about the bond between a woman and her remarkable elephant.
Unfortunately, the PokeAni zine I was a part of (Type Wild!) got cancelled recently so here are 2/3 pieces I completed for it! (more infos under cut)
First the print: the BW female rivals (featuring Trip) just chilling at a café. (Trip is paying) (he doesn't know that) (Burgundy's whole reaction is just "cry harder rich boy" tbh)
Second: A cute Sycamore found fam sticker! I make these four lil guys rotate in my brain like rotisserie chicken. They're important to me <3 I wanted to add a quote to it from the French lyrics of the XY game credits but decided against it last minute. The ones I thought about were: "Laissons donc s'épanouir les fleurs de la bonté."
The whole song fits perfectly but I think this particular line is simple, short and fit the vibe I wanted.
The whole team was absolutely lovely and I keep staring at the art/writing created by the talented creators composing said team and like... I don't know man, I just love everything we created. Really sad that we had to cancel but that's just how the cookie crumbles sometimes.
I finished 2 different pieces out of 3 for Type Wild!. Those 2 were meant to be merch (a print & a sticker). The last piece was a page artwork which I shall complete in my own time and post whenever it's done (pss pss it's XYZ related)
Thanks again to Mimo and Null for inviting me onto this project. It was really fun and I loved being able to see so many talented people's creative process. You guys all rock <3
While Georgia O'Keeffe painted some shells and skulls along with her many flowers and landscapes, living animals show up very rarely in her work. This is easily the best of those exceptions! 🐮
