The dog I was excited about meeting and then excited about potentially adopting and then excited about adopting and then was backup adopter for

Got adopted

And ...

They said it just like that. She has been adopted.

And no one seems to understand the emotional toll this is taking on me. This - not being this one - but the several dogs that I have already gone through this process with over the past years.

I thought I had a good idea this time to meet the dog first at an event - I got there the day after they said they had been having trouble placing her for months.

I told them my hesitance in filling out the application - how I wanted to be positive about it being a good fit and how I had spent so much emotional work doing these, filled out so many only for the dog to get adopted - but they said I should go ahead and do it. I did it 2 hours later (it took me an hour to fill it out). Twenty minutes later they told me they already had an adopter but they would keep me posted.

I drove 2 hours to meet her.

Someone saw her the same day and adopted her despite the foster not thinking it was a good match.

I have been excited for three days about the possibility it could fall to me to adopt her.

And now.

"she has been adopted" - no fanfare or anything

At least this time the org didn't say anything negative in addition to the statement. But.. still this doesn't feel good.

And I don't have anyone to talk to about it without sounding like really overly bothered by it or like super dog focused or upset by something trivial. "It is just like job applications - can be very disappointing" my roomie said. "You will find a good match" my friend said the last time I was late in the process and the dog moved 2 states away to a new rescue. My sadness has also been met with silence from some other friends I have tried to seek solace from. My neighbor has been very kind about it and frustrated-sad with me, but then I laugh off my grief bc I don't tend to let people see me upset if I am not in a private space.

But like. The emotional toll. It is so much ... Telling the rescue how I plan to incorporate the dog in my life, saying I am willing to adopt them for their natural life, telling them all the plans I have for the dog (they ask where the dog will sleep, what food I will feed it, what I will do when I go on vacation, how I plan to train, etc.), tell them about every animal I ever had and how my last pets died, telling my friends they are on the application as personal references, etc. Envisioning my life with that particular dog to make sure I haven't forgotten something that could be an issue.

So much for me. I know that the fall through can happen, I know that it just means some other dog will be the one. But like I need a second to be sad about this and it feels harder to get through it alone and bottled up sometimes. And my life really needs a doggo but this has been so frustrating and difficult.

I feel like some of the reason that generative AI and AI tools have become popular and that things like this seem to be helpful, is the focus on completing or finishing something.

We don't necessarily get credit just for showing up to class; we also have to pass the test. The goal is only met when the website page is written and published.

In some instances and scenarios, using completion as a metric is understandable, but to experiment with other metrics of value, I have been trying to allow for areas where that doesn't matter. And just allow to try and fail, or get better, or just do the process because then I'm doing it.

I play guitar though I have no plans to play anything at all - but I put my fingers on the fretboard and experimented with what made sound. I bake a cookie recipe and chase the flavor or texture as the whim takes me and sometimes change it 10 times before the end result.

When the goal becomes "finish the book", then having it summed up makes perfect sense. The goal being "hear the author and their turn of phrase even if it's strange" or "sympathise with the characters and feel their journey" it's different.

Have you ever read lyrics before hearing a song? I don't know if it's just me, but they make no bloody sense when I do. And sometimes it's a song I know, and I read the lyrics and they fall flat, have zero impact, and are completely indecipherable. But when spaced out, set to instrument, emphasized in certain ways, suddenly many meanings emerge as each phrase is sung.

Idk, I think it's kind of like that?

But when I'm just trying to quickly absorb the meaning of the song through the lyrics, I miss the meaning of the song - but I did take in all the lyrics.

Making completed works, and getting good grades, and making products - all emphasize that the only value is after something is finished. So, I kind of get the push for tools to help us finish things quicker, so we achieve the thing.

But sometimes I think we need the space to not do that, and have it be valued - the work in progress, or even just the partially executed ideas, starts of things, and random trails that lead nowhere in the end but were a part of the experience. Running through hypotheticals and discarding choices and only making it 70% of the way through a course. There is no closed loop, or job well done, or finale. But they still matter and added to and enriched my life and sometimes prepared me for some other thing.

one thing about Joel Smallishbeans is that he's always giggling. I think most people overlook this in the fandom because most of the time his delivery is just so deadpan and sarcastic, but its when he's doing a bit with another person you can always hear him loudly giggling in between sentences trying not to break character. He is ESPECIALLY prone to doing this with Etho. Its so damn cute it makes me insane and I think more people deserve to notice this!!

I think if I could travel back in time or have dinner with people from any time, I now would say I want to talk to some working class people.

For example, just today, I wondered how people historically brushed and groomed poodles. As the breed was being developed, what did they find the most success with?

I also thought about, what did laypeople think about bathing and showering (I know we have some info on this). Did they also have a distaste for getting wet that I sometimes feel, or ways to stay warm when they needed to bathe in winter.

In the way that history is written by the victors, I would like to know about some of the less memorialized opinions and wisdom. The things that didn't make it down through history or got overwritten by the choice that was written down. The small specifics that I encounter day to day and am curious if someone at one time had a different way of looking at or solution for, that maybe got lost to history due to being mundane or plebian.

one thing I really respect the merlin writers for is that they actually put in the effort to build up the arthur/gwen romance. there was actual development there. their relationship wasn't just written for the sake of having a romance on screen.
