I post this any time news about Adobe being Shit turns up.
Alternatives to Adobe Software:
Credit to XdanielArt for making this image. Their Original Post
The free version of Davinci Resolve + Fusion and Fairlight (Video Effects and Audio), Blender (3D + 2D animation), and Gimp (graphical software) collectively replace most of Adobe's software and arguably out performs them. Blender has also substantially improved Greasepaint to the point you can use it as a dedicated 2D art application. The paid version of Resolve is also a single time purchase.
Sunken Cost Fallacy will not help you with Adobe. There are better options available and most of them don't cost anything. The cost of using Adobe software is egregious and their DRM is blatantly designed in bad faith. It's gotten so bad that the Film Industry has started abandoning its use in favour of the listed alternatives above.

All my animations I ever did were drawn in Painttool SAI (2) and then painfully put together in Gimp as gif or recently in Davinci Resolve (with each frame being saved as single PNG), but uh,
the fish man is giving me animation ideas too complex for my usual process, so I looked at Krita that is sitting on my computer for, uh... a few years I think.
...
I can pursue some of my animation ideas now if I want to :^)
(Krita also allows for audio import, although without a visual wave form... But eh, it's free)
#habitalk#animation test#Would you believe this is my first time in a program with an actual animation interface?#I soaked up all the animation knowledge but never was able to “properly apply it lol

Y'all I love free software so much y'all don't even know. Have a list of my favorite free programs I have used lately when creative juices are flowing:
Gifs:
Giphy Capture: Very very easy to use (you will figure it out in no time). You can't recolor anything here, but I've found the compression options allow me to retain enough quality that I am not repulsed by the idea of posting gifsets made with this tool. They will never be as pretty as recolored gifs made in photoshop, but if you just want to make a scene and it not look horrid, this shit will get it done with a learning curve that's as flat as they come (Mac only tho sadly).
ezgif.com: Swiss army knife of gif making in your browser. You can crop, add effects, adjust brightness, saturation, hue, etc., trim, cut frames, and optimize file size. You can upload a set of images to turn into a gif, upload a gif you've already captured to edit it, or upload and video clip and render and edit into gifs all in your browser.
Davinci Resolve (18.5 Beta) - I am very excited about this one. Davinci Resolve is a professional-quality video editing software available for free for personal uses. It is stuffed full of video recoloring options, and they recently added gif rendering. This means you can recolor a whole scene all at once, split it into clips representing each gif in your set, then batch export a whole scene of short clips as gifs at the same time after adding text, cropping, cutting frames, and recoloring them as desired. Compression options on export are minimal right now, but I'm hoping as this new tool develops and moves out of beta... *rubs hands together evilly*.
Video:
Davinci Resolve - As above—professional-quality video editor available for free for personal use. Tbh the video editor pre-shipped with your OS will get you real far, but this one has a plethora of options you won't find in there, and typically will not ever find for free at all.
Ffmpeg - Need to batch convert .mkv files to .mp4 because your various softwares or maybe your PLEX server isn't playing nice??? ffmpeg has your back! If a command line is too intimidating though you can always go with Handbrake (if you can stumble your way through a command line though—ffmpeg will convert a whole season of TV to .mp4 before handbrake finishes a single episode).
Art:
Autodesk Sketchbook - I have had this puppy for a very very long time—I had it when it was actually a one-time purchase desktop app back in the day and I paid $50 and it was worth it. HOWEVER, Autodesk Sketchbook is now completely free! You can use everything I paid $50 for when I was like 16 years old for free! It runs on phones and tablets too! There are a lot of awesome free digital art tools (i.e., ye olde classic GIMP) or ones you can get for very cheap one time purchase, but this is just a free one I am fond of.

Fun fact, I used 4 different programs to make that gif.
Drawn on Krita
Touched up in SAI
Made individual gifs with Gimp
Thrown together and rendered in DaVinci Resolve
There has to be a better way

Am a Windows user, have never used anything but windows, am comfortable with windows.
Convince me to linux. Explain
I’m going to keep this short because I could make this infinitely long.
In a world where you really cannot trust big companies, windows has gotten very self conscious that they could track and sell every piece of data from their customer and add unnecessary features and no one would notice it, even though it actually makes the user experience worse. If you don’t have a key, you probably also have to over a hundred dollars just for some basic amenities, like changing a wallpaper.
Linux, in the other hand, is free and open source software (FOSS), which, in its simplest form, means that all the code is there for you to change and revise. Because of this openness, most Linux distros usually never have features to sell your data, and if they do, someone’s bound to make a patch to have that not happen. This means that Linux is much more safe and secure than windows by a long shot, and you really don’t have to worry about your information being sold to dubious companies.
Linux, with all its FOSS-ness, also allows anyone to make theirs distro look anyway you want. For instance, I personally prefer the look of MacOS to Windows (I know, probs controversial opinion). On windows, it’s be a pain in the ass to get it that way, especially without a key, while in Linux you can easily do that with relative ease, as long as you have a guide. Linux is just more freedom, something probably over said but still very true.
There’s other reasons why people would want to switch to Linux to. I didn’t really note that it’s less “bloated” than windows, which means that it has a lot less unnecessary features and thus will run way faster on any computer, especially old ones. Bloat has been kinda a controversial word in the community, since people like to argue that some distros are worse because they have more features. However, no matter what you choose, it’ll probably be better than windows.
The biggest drawback to Linux, in my opinion, is obviously app compatibility. I’ve mentioned gaming before, but that’s something that’s seedy vastly improved over the years. However, some popular apps are just incomparable with Linux, most notably the entire adobe suite and (unsurprisingly) Microsoft office. There’s a couple other things you can do to circumnavigate this.
You can try to find alternatives. GIMP works as a nice alternative to photoshop, Davinci Resolve has native Linux versions, and libreoffice is probably capable enough to replace word or PowerPoint.
You can try to install wine and pray to god it’ll work (though it probably won’t).
You can run a virtual machine and run windows with that, thought that’s not GPU accelerated and thus might be laggy.
OR, and this is the best option in my opinion, you can dual boot windows along side linux, so if you really need to use it, it’s there as an option. If you’re going to do this option, make sure to install windows first before Linux (because of some stupid thing where it erases it in grub or smtn) and that the two operating systems are on separate drives. Also try to debloat windows though guides on YouTube, but know that it won’t be as private as Linux.
Honestly, that’s as much as I have to say about the subject matter. Others are free to add on, since I probably missed a few things. You might not like it at first, but I do encourage you to at least try it. Hell, you might even like it so much that using windows is now alien to you (like me, lmfao).
Hope this helped, and remember, never type “sudo rm -rf /” in the terminal. (Aw fuck, I forgot to explain the terminal. Oh well, I hope someone can explain it to you, and if you get stuck on it there’s always guides online)

Random update on the 200KnacksChallenge:
(I just made up that name now; for any who read this, I intended to draw many Little Knacks using screenshots from the first game as reference, and collected about 100 screenshots. Now I'm adding the second game to the project and am going to collect 100 more presumably. Give or take a few tens. Sounds scary, but I know those are rookie numbers for what I wish I could cook up. The goal is to Get Good and Have Fun)
So it turns out, my settings for DaVinci Resolve made it so stills were saved in ultraHD, 2160p, rather than 1080p. You might hear Ultra High Definition and be like hey that sounds cool, more resolution gets you clearer images, right? Wrong.
Because 1. Most people are going to view anything I make via a computer or phone, which don't exceed 1080p. Things like UltraHD and 4K are for big screens that have more pixels. And 2. I downloaded the videos in 1080p, so making them 2160p blows them up to 4x their original size, but it doesn't add more detail.
The result is files that are bloated for no reason. It is late at the moment, so I have not the brainpower to know what that means for the images I already shared online. Probably not worth redoing them; they're fine for the most part but might be kinda big, depending. The PSN message stickers are unbothered since they never went into DaVinci Resolve, just GIMP for cropping, so that's nice.
Anyway, with how stills work in DaVinci, I sort of have to go back and retake them. This wouldn't be such a big deal, just some tedium, except I have to do everything the hard way for reasons. But now I have space on the laptop, so I can do thing! Yay!

Cheaper Adobe Portfolio
I finally escaped the Adobe shackles by using only DaVinci Resolve, Gimp and other tools, only to find my website disappeared since it was hosted on the Adobe Portfolio service. Being unmotivated to re-create in another tool I discovered InCopy is about £5 a month and includes the Portfolio. Not quite free of Adobe yet, but this is cheaper.

How to Use a Snow Overlay to Create Stunning Winter Effects in Your Photos and Videos
Winter brings a magical atmosphere, with peaceful snow overlay, snowy landscapes, and mild dreamlike surroundings. For photographers, videographers, and digital content material creators, it may on occasion be tough to get that best iciness vibe to your images or motion pictures. That’s where the snow overlay comes into play.
A snow overlay is a virtual ability that simulates falling snow, snow, or ice conditions. This makes it smooth for creators to incorporate actual or simulated snow into their photos and movies while not having to shoot in winter situations. In this newsletter, we’ll explore how snow overlay works, the way to use it, and the advantages of incorporating it into your innovative projects.
What is a snow overlay?
A snow overlay is an image that can be placed over your photo or video to create the illusion of snow. These snow overlays are typically transparent PNG files or video clips in which the interesting snowfall blends seamlessly with the background of your photo or image They are made in a variety of formats—from soft snowflakes, which range from mild to heavy snow—and can add depth and atmosphere to any scene.
How to Use a Snow Overlay in Photography?
If you want to add a snow overlay to your photos, a snow overlay can be a game changer. Here’s a quick guide on how to snow overlay your photo with snow.
1. Choose the Right Overlay: Browse through the selection of snow overlay and choose one that fits the mood you want to create. Some have heavy snow, while others mimic heavy snow or thunderstorms.
2. Download the overlay: Once you have selected the appropriate overlay, download it to your computer. A snowflake is usually supplied as a PNG file with a clear background, making it easy to lay out on top of your original image.
3. Open your photo editing software: Software like Photoshop or GIMP allows you to work with layers, making it easier to combine snow overlay. Open your drawings and snowflakes in your photo editor.
4. Layer the Overlay: Drag the snow overlay onto your image, placing it as a new layer on top of the first image. Keep it naturally visible—make sure it covers the entire image or covers a specific part.
5. Change settings: You can adjust the opacity, blend mode, and size of the snow overlay to match the scene. Play around with these settings for the best effect.
6. Fine-tune the image: After applying a snow overlay, you can also add some blur or add depth to soften the snow if you want to adjust contrast, brightness, or other elements and make the snow effect look similar to... photo.
7. Save and Share: Once you’re happy with the final result, save your photo in your favorite format and share it with the world!
How to Use a Snow Overlay in Video?
Video footage Snow overlay can be just as effective, especially for filmmakers or producers looking to capture the essence of winter in a scene. Here's how to add a Snow overlay to your videos.
1. Look for snow overlay videos: For video work, you may want to look for snow overlay in video formats, such as MP4 or MOV. These snow overlays usually have a smooth snowflake from behind, allowing you to apply them to your scene with ease.
2. Import your video and Snow overlay into editing software: Software like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, or DaVinci Resolve allows you to work with video layers. Bring your video footage and Snow overlay.
3. Layer a snow overlay: Place the snow overlay on top of your original scene in a new video track. Adjust the size, location, and timing of the snow effect to suit your video.
4. Finetune the Effect: You can adjust the opacity, speed, and direction of the snowfall to create the perfect effect. For snowflakes, increase the opacity and density of the snowflakes. If it snows slowly, reduce opacity and reduce the number of blocks.
5. Add volume (optional): Adding the sound of wind or gently falling snow can further enhance the immersive atmosphere of winter.
6. Export your video: Once the Snow overlay is good and you like the final result, export the video and share it on social media, YouTube, or another platform
Benefits of Using Snow Overlay?
Easy to use: Snow Overlay are smooth to use and do not require superior specialization or portray competencies. Just download, install, and make changes.
Time Savings: Getting snow properly from scratch can take plenty of time and effort. It saves you the problem of imparting an equipped-to-use snow cover that may be deployed in minutes.
Versatility: Whether you’re running a vacation marketing campaign, a wintry weather-themed video, or a simple photograph assignment, Snow Overlay is flexible enough to match strategies and programs.
Low cost: Hiring a computer graphics team or spending time filming in the snow can be steeply priced. Snow Cowl affords a less expensive alternative that offers you exceptional consequences without charge.
Creative manipulation: A snow cowl allows you to create as much snow as you need, whether or not it’s mild powder or heavy snow. You have entire management over the tone and ecosystem.
Conclusion
Adding snow overlay to your photography and video is a quick and effective way to bring winter beauty and serenity to your images. Whether you’re working on a holiday ad, a winter movie scene, or just want to evoke the spirit of the season, snow coverings offer an easy solution to add a little magic to your stories Experiment with different coatings, adjust layouts to suit your style and See how your creations turn into wonderful winter wonderlands.

if youre not a Turbo Gamer, Linux is ready for 99% of use cases
office suite: Libreoffice has basically everything you'd need from spreadsheets and word docs to graphical files and presentations
video editing: kdenlive is fantastic if youre on anything but centos, in which case you can use DaVinci Resolve
photo editing: GIMP and Krita are amazing manipulation and painting programs respectively
browsers: Firefox tends to be the default, but you can install Chrome and even Edge if you want to use Edge for some reason. Lots of browsers are available.
Gaming: Steam, Lutris, Bottles, all great options for gaming, but Steam's Proton tool is all around fantastic. Some gaming companies think Linux users are "filthy cheaters" by default, so they wont let you play their game on Linux even tho it'd work fine. Thats really the only hiccup with Linux gaming tbh
Linux is good enough for most desktop users and its easy to install. All you need to get started is a flash drive and a willingness to learn
i doubt the option to turn off Recall will be available for ever, let alone it being local to your system only. Try Linux c:

Problem of Every Graphic/Visual Designer
Have you ever used other design softwares instead of Adobe?
If not, Are you the one carrying a legit subscription?
IF NOT, Then are you using it for making personal projects or doing client work?
Let's discuss all of this in the post.
We designers usually get introduced to the world of digital design with softwares like Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, Premiere Pro, and sometimes CorelDRAW.
But how many of you have heard the names of Inkscape, Gimp, CavalryApp, DaVinci Resolve, and Kdenlive?
These are a part of a category called open source softwares.
Adobe has been the market leader when it comes to digital design. They have been adding innovative features to make the processes easier. The way digital design is today is because of the amount of focus they have put in to benefit their customer.
Even they have tried to make their plans cheaper for the first year for working professionals to make their services accessible. But the fact that the amount of money we as design students spend on learning that is graduation is already very high for a middle-class family, needless to say.
Also, if we complete this line of education. Then comes the career opportunities. If somebody goes for full-time employment, chances are that you may get the subscription if you opt for an established company.
But if you want to work as a freelancer. Then again things are different. Because you initially do not take the risk of investing the money in softwares for the first year and then paying a massive amount to continue the next year. As the price is much higher as compared to the first year.
I left Adobe Creative Cloud Suite in the year 2019 and shifted completely to open-source applications after my boss in my first job told me to do so. Thank You, Sir.
But the problem is that, except for Figma, I do not enjoy the exciting features of the softwares I use.
Like the pen tool in Illustrator made my illustrations look so good that I miss it.
The last proper digital caricature and portrait was done by me in Photoshop.
The last proper animation also I think was what I did in After Effects.
I want companies and other designers to understand that if you are hiring candidates, then Adobe can be an important factor while hiring.
Open source softwares also deliver 75-80% of the results regarding features with whatever is available.
But how many people do you think can afford these highly priced softwares?
And will it be legal for somebody to freelance with such softwares?
Let me know about your views in the comments section. Let's see if Adobe too becomes a part of this discussion.

I say I keep thinking about making comics and animations and collages, and my dad tells me that's awesome you should try that.
I will perish at this rate. I'm having fun but also going insane.
What I have done so far is download someone's playthrough of the first game on YouTube and put it in daVinci Resolve, and then went through the footage and grabbed stills of every time Knack appears or changes size in a cutscene.
Backing up for a moment: I had first watched the whole thing on youtube and tried to record time stamps for every cutscene and some synopsis of what happens. This unfortunately did not track exactly to the time stamps in Resolve but it wasn't too bad.
Anyway THEN I went through and looked for any interesting poses and grabbed stills of those and put them in a separate folder. I then exported the stills as pngs and imported them into GIMP. Whereupon I manually cut Knack out of every frame (because I don't know how to do it automatically with all the different backgrounds) and arranged them into multiple character action sheets. These are basically my references. I am just going to draw them exactly as they appear for the most part. No tracing.
So I started drawing Knack and I have like 4 of him in my sketchbook out of potentially 112 or so. Just of his smallest form. And it doesn't necessarily take me long to sketch him out. But THEN I wasn't fully satisfied with the character design so I'm caving and downloading someone's playthrough of the second game. And this one is in a playlist so I have to find each individual video and download them and stitch them together in Resolve. (there are full single videos but they look like they've been deep fried sometimes). And I'm going to do the same thing as the first and find all the cutscenes, some interesting poses and assemble those. I was originally just going to grab a few screenshots and use those to decide how to do his arm spikes and feet, but then I saw some really fun poses and I'm losing it.
All this while making other insane posts like these and struggling to focus on my homework.
A major thing helping me do this is: DaVinci Resolve has a feature where each of the stills I collect have a time stamp in it, so it can take me to that part of the video.
#wall of text#howling at the sun#I am full of joy you guys but it's also getting in my way.#I also went back and unprivated a lot of posts#at this point i'm no longer worrying about looking tidy because I can't#also also: why does my website only show so many of my posts?#discoknack (me)

Year End Reflections.
What is up, Knighthood?! (iykyk)
2024 is coming to an end, and I wanted to take stock (or "hold space" for the {wic}kids), in exactly how wild this year has been.
The Knighthood
The Knighthood has uploaded 31 new videos to the YT channel since July, when AgentElf and I decided to intentionally invest our time and money into building an online community and content-factory.
AgentElf made play-throughs of Amnesia and Mouthwashing, 2 solo-horror-puzzle games.
I made my very first video essay about my first play-through of Kingdom Come Deliverance.
We celebrated hitting 100 subscribers on YouTube and then the following day, 2 people unsubscribed.
We hosted Pummel Party, Dead by Daylight, and Tabletop Simulator gaming events!
We created a handful of custom emojis and sound-bytes from our freshman year of content, paying tribute to our supportive friends and marking the beginning of The Knighthood's recorded lore.
bern and I started building a mobile game, Posers, in Unity and it's turning out great!
I leveled up my software skill-tree by learning: Blender, GIMP, and DaVinci Resolve.
oh yeah... and I became a DAD!
Goals for 2025
Produce more sketch comedy content.
Start AgentElf's cooking series.
Host gaming tournaments and content contests.
Reach 1000+ YouTube subscribers.
Upgrade AgentElf's battlestation.
If you are reading this, thank you so much for your support in this ambitions venture! Hopefully The Knighthood has brought you some level of joy.
Happy New Year!
