Weekly Grammar Tip: Power of the Period (Literally)
Ever wondered how a tiny dot can make or break your writing? That's the power of the period! This punctuation mark does more than just end sentences. It adds rhythm, clarity, and even drama to your prose. Here are some tips:
Keep It Short and Simple
Long sentences can confuse readers and water down your message. Break up complex ideas with periods for bite-sized, easy-to-digest chunks.
Example:
Before: The alchemist worked tirelessly in his dimly lit laboratory, mixing potions, consulting ancient texts, and conducting experiments late into the night.
After: The alchemist worked tirelessly in his dimly lit laboratory. He mixed potions, consulted ancient texts, and conducted experiments late into the night.
Dodge the Run-Ons
Run-on sentences happen when independent clauses are strung together without proper punctuation or conjunctions. Periods help you avoid these and keep your grammar game strong.
Example:
Before: Lady Isabella entered the room she surveyed the scene with a keen eye.
After: Lady Isabella entered the room. She surveyed the scene with a keen eye.
Spotlight Key Points
Short sentences can emphasize important details and add a dramatic flair. Periods create natural pauses to let your key information shine.
Example:
Before: In the heart of London, amidst the chaos and noise, a secret meeting took place that would change everything.
After: In the heart of London, amidst the chaos and noise, a secret meeting took place. It would change everything.
Mix It Up for Rhythm
A blend of short and long sentences creates an engaging rhythm in your writing. Periods allow you to control this flow and keep readers hooked.
Example:
Before: Elizabeth Thorn, a skilled herbalist, used her knowledge to heal the sick during the Great Plague, her potions and remedies providing much-needed relief to those who were suffering.
After: Elizabeth Thorn, a skilled herbalist, used her knowledge to heal the sick during the Great Plague. Her potions and remedies provided much-needed relief to those who were suffering.

voicevox humming might also be good for those looking weird metallic noisy vocal synths if they're willing to play with the unpredictability of it because i had akashi on the absolutely wrong range setting for this song and he started breaking down like faulty motor
#he shoulda been at like -10 or somewhere around there but he was at -6#breathier gentle voices+emotions are more effective in humming if you want this echoey metal scraping sound#so like akashi and nurse type t are pretty quiet. and ryuusei has a thousand emotion modes and half of them are whispery#also unrelated since this song has a bunch of glottal stops i decided to finally check if っ works as a phoneme#it does. i dont know why i wasnt sure. its a text-to-speech software primarily and that is. an important part of japanese speech LOL#but it does work in humming which is nice! also unrelated but i just found out the technical name for っ is sokuon#my japanese teachers always just the less fancy term chisai tsu or small tsu depending on language theyre speaking in the moment#its like how i didnt know what a cedilla was called in english for years. i learned about it in school first et en français its cédille#thats how i got a little sweet taste of basic linguistic concepts as a kid in general actually. through language learning classes#you learn a grammar thing for one language and ur like holy shit. what is that. where can i learn more. and then you start googling <3

having a day where i just want to give up on literally everything
#i dont want to read about grammar anymore. its boring as fuck and trying to understand how to form a proper sentence#just leads me down this endless void of accusatives and datives and infinitives and transitives and participates and particles and#i come out of it feeling like i learned nothing helpful. and like i have to study this entire other area of stuff#just to even have the *potential* to learn how not to sound like an idiot when i form sentences#i dont want to constantly look up the 73 conjugates every verb has either (and then not be able to find the correct one because i#need to have a master's degree in grammar to understand which one to use!)#I'm also dead tired of this circuits course. All it's done is put some sense into me and convinced me to revert back to my focus on digital#signal processing. I'm no long having any fun with this. I'm also tired of my digital logic class because I'm not interested in building#a new CPU architecture from scratch out of CMOS chips and as a result most of this shit means nothing to me. It's also convinced me that#the advantages of FPGAs are not at all worth the trade-offs compared to microcontrollers. at least not for me.#Verilog is a shitty ass language and Vivado is a shitty ass software#i wanna rip my own head off while doing a backflip

Does Grammarly Really Make Your Writing Perfect? Review from a Pro Writer and Editor
As a writer, it’s hard to know which resources are actually useful and which ones are just a fad. “You have to use this software to outline your book!” “This is the only word processor you should use to write your novel!” “Everyone can tell if you don’t use this tool. . .” Heard it before? There are so many writing tools and resources available nowadays, and that fact can either be extremely…

someone reblogged a post from me saying “if you’ve ever used spellcheck you’ve used AI” so that dumbass is blocked now
#self-professed ‘millennial who missed the tumblr train’ then fucking act like it lmao?#spellcheckers have not been any measure of intelligent for like 40 years#literally 14 years longer than i have been alive (commodore 64’s WordCheck in 1980)#and it’s somehow gotten worse since (it’s a dictionary you programmed into the computer how hard is it to cross-reference with actual words)#and corporate-forced AI integration into all their products is only making it dumber#a directly integrated basic spelling/grammar dictionary in the system doesn’t have remotely the software load#that “true” ai or even a cloud-based catalogue imposes on your processors and internet connection#so if you wanna be an idiot too and come into the notes to argue pick a fight with me for a free block too 👍

I just think it's funny that anyone has ever used any kind of grammar software to much serious extent.
Spellcheck is one thing, and at least it's useful. Grammar checker, though? You already have to know what you're doing to use it. You can't use it blindly. MAYBE it'll be helpful in catching one or two errors you spaced out over. Usually you end up keeping what you originally wrote.
I haven't used grammar software for any kind of serious effort since high school. Even IN high school it didn't provide much value. You don't need it.
Thanks to intrusive AI implementations turning most grammar products into a festering bucket of inaccurate shit being used to steal our work and feed the yawning maw of technological enshitification under corporate greed, I've pretty much disabled all of my editing software and am just raw-dogging the writing experience like it's 2012.
But sometimes, even the native Word editor makes a suggestion that's so fucking dumb I have to pause and pinch my nose and ask, "Baby doll, are you fucking high?" as I mark the suggestion as wrong.
What I had written: He tipped his head back, baring his throat to those sharp, gleaming teeth.
Word's suggestion: He bore his throat.
That's it. That's the suggestion for "clarity and conciseness." Just remove three-quarters of the sentence and use the completely wrong word for the implied action.
I miss Clippy.
#the bad suggestions by Word are so ancient 😂#they date back to the literal beginning. it's just mundane par for the course#you're better off proofreading your own stuff#I'll never use grammar software beyond desktop word#sometimes I'll look up and marvel at the extent other people evidently use these weird products to help them write#wonder at what strange little world that is#and go right back to my own work being more correct than any computer#humor#AI being implemented in grammar products what? when? can't relate

do you think it's okay to use ai for editing?
oof, i don't really care one way or another? i don't use it, but that's not really a moral position, i just don't like my writing being meddled with and am generally kind of a luddite. to be honest though i don't think this should be as much a question of "is this okay" for you as "does this help me and am i comfortable with it"
#esp when it comes to copy editing AI doesn't........seem all that different to me to software we had previously to the boom#and that software was already pretty susceptible to mistakes#so to me personally AI doesn't seem more helpful than commonplace grammar checks but like it's whatever#it's here to stay anyway like it's over lol just do whatever you want#asks#anon

Human Editors Vs Editing Softwares
If I had a rupee for every time some writer inquired about my editing fee and then reverted with an “I think I can do this on my own using (XYZ) software,” I’d probably be richer than Mr Ambani. Well… maybe not, but close enough. Though, I’d still be writing and editing 😉 Today, there’s some software for everything, right from the useful ones like powerful word processors to insanely useless…

What did you use to write?
Latest blog post - click the link below! I'd love to know your thoughts!
Have you ever wondered what tools I used to write my book? Well, you’re not alone. I’ve received several questions about my writing process, so I decided to share it with you in this post. You may remember from a previous post that I started writing in Google Docs. The reason was simple: I had an old laptop that couldn’t handle the latest version of Office. It was barely able to go online and…
