the round is intended to do massive tissue damage by fragmenting or tumbling soon after hitting flesh

this is not optimal for something you intend to eat

either you use a .22 long rifle for small game like rabbits and squirrels (though trapping is much more efficient, calories spent versus calories acquired-wise, it's still a thing people do for survival reasons)

or you use a single shot rifle with a heavier round, somewhere around .30 caliber, that makes a very narrow predictable wound track in a large animal
