And don't film people!!
Gyms can be intimidating for a variety of reasons. Don't add to the stress because you think it's somehow funny to film somebody for their looks or form. There are people who avoid going to the gym because they don't want to end up on someone's tiktok

You know what I think is interesting? As a decently buff woman, the attitude of men towards me in a gym vs in a martial arts academy is VERY different.
Usually men in a gym will look at me That Way™ when I walk into the weight section and do 2 hours of upper body weight training. A lot are judgemental af, trying to dissect my form even tho I've gone through several personal trainers and my form is usually better than theirs. Just overall bad energy.
The men in my martial arts academy?
Something else entirely.
The guys from muay thai and bjj, especially the ones from wrestling, are always hyping me up and encouraging me. Of course there's some exceptions, but most of these dudes have already been humbled by enough women that they're eons less judgemental.
They respect me enough to not go easy on me but they don't try to genuinely injure me (bad sportsmanship no matter the gender). If something about my form in a technique is off, they will give me constructive criticism instead of being demeaning or just staying silent about it to try to guarantee a win.
A guy last week was like "you really be brawling, you picked me up and rolled my on the ground like an alligator", and another dude today was like "you're getting so strong so fast it's ridiculous." AND I'M LIKE THANK YOU FOR THE GOOD ENERGY, WORKING OUT IS 80% OF MY PERSONALITY SO IM HOPING TO BE GOOD IN AT LEAST THAT😭😭😭💕💕

I just with mine own eyes saw someone say that calling gym culture ableist is the REAL ableism because they know a guy with Down’s Syndrome and one arm that goes to the gym sometimes.
Gym culture in and of itself may not be ableist, but you know what is? Telling disabled people that they can and should go to the gym just because you know an amputee or someone in a wheelchair who lifts. Physically disabled people who can exercise that heavily and often without severe exhaustion or pain is a fucking anomaly.
“Disabled people can exercise just as easily as able-bodied people and also work as hard and often and have hardly any struggles actually” is really not the allyship you think it is in a world where the government will look at a fucking paraplegic with epilepsy and a heart condition and declare them ‘fit for work’ and act all shocked when the person eventually collapses from exhaustion and dies suddenly and prematurely.
The word is ‘disabled’ for a reason you absolute brainless wankwads and it’s not a dirty word

It’s not about perfection. But it’s about becoming better. Not better than the rest, but better than yourself.

It feels odd when I see women posting about "healing" their relationship with their body by going from being calorie-counting Tumblr thinspo, super skinny to calorie-counting, Instagram muscle mommy, bodybuilding. Like no girl you're just jumping from one extreme obsession with your physique to another, both manufactured and promoted by the health industry to squeeze as much money and energy out of you as possible, telling you that you need certain products and supplements to reach your goals and be happy while simultaneously telling you you will never be good enough, putting you through an endless cycle of making goals, reaching them, then realizing you're still not as fulfilled as you were promised to be. But whatever makes you happy I guess

things i love: female dancers practicing in baggy sweatpants and baggy hoodies with messy hair and no makeup while having fun and supporting each other.
things i loathe: the performative and judgemental gym culture that promotes tight, cropped, revealing outfits for women as well as flawless hair and makeup/skin that makes you feel like an interloper if you show up in sweats and no makeup.

Okay this one got long and ranty but it's basically about how a lot of gyms turn into high control groups and end up trapping members in what is basically a cult. It's common for martial arts gyms to be red pill manosphere pipelines, AND it's common for these crunchy yoga/pilates/aerial arts circles to become culty, and of course the dance community has always had this problem.
I filmed it while working out, jogging, doing HEMA footwork drills, and stretching. Now all of that feels extremely cringe.
I basically walk through what people actually need in order to be "healthy" and how to achieve that without accidentally joining one of these cult groups.

Welcome to the Fitness Family
Tumblr media
Fitness Culture can seem intimidating, especially if you’re just starting out or aren’t sure what to expect. But don’t worry, the gym doesn’t have to be a scary place. In fact, it can be a great place to make friends, stay healthy, and have fun!
At its core, gym culture is all about creating a friendly, supportive environment where everyone can exercise and get fit. There’s no need to be intimidated by the latest fitness trends or the most knowledgeable gym goers. In fact, everyone is there to help each other out.
At the gym, it’s important to always respect the equipment and the other people around you. It’s also important to practice proper form and safety when using the equipment, and to be mindful of the other people in the gym.
Finally, don’t be afraid to ask questions! Most people in the gym are more than happy to help out and offer advice so don’t be shy! The gym is a great place to make friends, stay fit, and have fun. Welcome to the gym culture!
