ppl in my inbox pissed about my harry potter post assuming i’m a trans woman…
i’m not offended by it whatsoever but i need to let you know that the reason you think everyone who opposes your awful bigoted garbage ass viewpoint is trans is b/c it’s easier than admitting to yourself that anybody that’s cis could have a different view than yours and that you’re just not a good person. n e way blocked and also kys.

Name one of your fave comfort fics (doesn't have to be your all time fave).
This is a difficult question for me because honestly most of the time when I want to read something for comfort, I usually either pull up Scrivener or my own AO3 page and read some hurt/comfort I wrote, because almost all of what I write is stuff I want to read. My other comfort reading habits are favorite middle-grade or YA novels from my youth (The Pushcart War, Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher, and the first few Young Wizards books) and, um, fics for pairings and fandoms I have no investment in, so one of my faves is a hockey RPF academic AU, and there's some good tropey MCU fic I've enjoyed, particularly time travel stuff. There's also a few friends-to-lovers pairings that I can just go to the fic tag and read a bunch of when I'm down. (Examples include Arthur/Merlin (BBC versions) and Aziraphale/Crowley.) But! Here are some fics from fandoms I actually know:
Buy the Stars by conceptofzero
Fallen London; Player Character/Rubbery Man. 36k words, rated E.
I love fluffy xeno romance and the gentle sort of "figuring out how to communicate while taking refuge with each other" in this particular fic is a great example of why I love fluffy xeno romance.
No Reservations: Narnia by Edonohana
Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations/The Chronicles of Narnia crossover. 6.2k words, rated T.
A classic; everyone's read it, even my mom. But it's good, and I find reading about elaborate fantasy food comforting. (One of my other go-to comfort activities is looking through fannish recipes or daydreaming about cooking things based on a piece of media I'm into, so this works for that.)
Senses by Miss_Prince
Analogue: A Hate Story; *Hyun-ae/*Mute. 1.9k words, rated G.
This is a fic about a character who's been been through some shit in canon getting good things, finally.
service returns an untagged EXISTS response by tweedymcgee
Doctor Who/Homestuck crossover; Karkat and the Tenth Doctor. 1k words, rated T.
Not comfort fic per se, but I find it hilarious and it always cheers me up to remember it exists.
social links by simplycarryon
Undertale; Sans & Alphys friendship fic. 2.5k words, rated G.
Their friendship is only hinted at in canon but I'm fully on board with the fanon that they're bad decision buddies and I love them.
Turn by Saras_Girl
Harry Potter; Harry/Draco. 306k words, rated E.
Honestly I haven't read any of Saras_Girl's longfics that wasn't a good comfort read, but this one is one of my favorites. Unfortunately her summaries and titles are often super vague and I was like "shit, which one is the one where Harry falls into an AU and has to rethink his whole entire life?" and I guessed incorrectly a couple times before finding it. Anyway, this one is great and has themes of Rethinking Your Whole Entire Life As An Adult Who's Supposed To Have Everything Figured Out, but frankly so do a lot of her fics, which I appreciate as an adult who has absolutely never had anything figured out except like, how to write funny dialogue.

Feel free to elaborate/rant/explore your feelings and thoughts about the topic in reblog additions or tags!
A note: this is NOT about enjoyment of fandom/fanworks/non-Rowling related content, but about the books and movies. Nor this is about the Fantastic Beast movies or whatever new shit the WB or Rowling have come up with in recent years, I don't even know about those.

Currently Losing My Fucking Mind over Greg Ellis tagging JK Rowling on Twitter because he’s in the goddamn wizard game and her actually responding
Tumblr media
This is the most rancid crossover of the century and I’m stunned these two people interacting didn’t open up some transphobic vortex of hate that removed them both from existence. but I guess that would be too easy

"love the art, hate the artist"
okay y'all. y'all. so like, I say this regularly. I made it up. but I think it should be used by everyone.
like, this is a hot take, but it's okay to enjoy something made by a shitty person.
this isn't to say boycotting and cancel culture should be stopped! like, if someone is a shitty person, they should not be paid to be able to continue to be shitty. so yeah, go ahead and pirate shit. wait until media is free and enjoy it then.
but like, I feel like people go so hard when it comes to shitty people that they're essentially killing the arts, and the people who find peace with them. it's just not fair.
examples under the cut
I mean the first and most obvious example would be j.k. rowling. there's SO MUCH discourse surrounding her. but there shouldn't need to be. she's an awful person and a transphobe, and she should be avoided and boycotted. she doesn't deserve any more money. that being said, we can support things in the franchise she's not a part of. we should support fanart and fanfiction involving these beloved characters. we should encourage trans headcanons and embrace the fact that a lot of what makes the Harry Potter universe so great is the fans, not her.
another one is Michael Jackson. he was a pervert and shouldn't be celebrated the way he was and still is. that being said, he made music inspired by black culture and in turn inspired new types of music. so his music, things like the moonwalk, they should be appreciated.
John Barrowman is another good one. he was inappropriate and people have every right to blacklist him. but Jack Harkness? Jack Harkness is a PHENOMENAL character. he stands for omni rep, embracing queerness, and is a well constructed character that parallels and bounces off The Doctor beautifully. and? he can easily be recast. it's literally sci-fi dude, it's not that big a deal. yes Barrowman made a huge impact on the character, but he's not all he is. the writers contributed, too.
Jonathan Majors is a hot topic right now. yes, he should absolutely be blacklisted and removed from the mcu. but that doesn't meant they have to get rid of Kang. he was going to be (and still can be) a widely used character - characters, really - within the marvel universe. they can just recast him. they did it with Bruce Banner, they did it with Rhodey, two major characters in the mcu. they've done it with more I can't think of at the moment. and again, it's technically sci-fi. not to mention that with No Way Home and the Loki variants, they clearly showed that the same character can have different faces/actors.
notable mention: Tom Cruise. Knight and Day was awesome.
so yeah. hate the artist, love the art. it's really not as big a deal as people make it out to be.

“But it’s censorship!” No, it’s asking people to not support JKR. It’s asking people to not subscribe to her hateful ideologies. It’s a boycott. Censorship is trying to ban books in order to erase history and oppressed voices, eschew important moral lessons, and discourage critical thinking in order to promote purist culture. The Harry Potter series is rife with hateful content—as endorsed by its author—that inspires hate in turn. It’s different.

Not to bring up the wizard books but seriously what is up with the whole 'the elves LIKE being slaves' thing. How the hell do you write that and think it's a-okay? Even as a kid I was taken aback. Slavery = bad should be a no brainer, right?

as a trans harry potter fan of course i appreciate people who are vocal allies. god knows we need them. but at the same time i don’t know how i feel about seeing cis people posting out of the blue “harry potter fans dni, i don’t trust you if you’re a harry potter fan, find a different book it’s not that hard” and the like
it’s already a hard and personal choice to engage with hp in any way if you’re trans. i find it a bit patronising in the way the above suggests the person hasn’t done their own research and balanced pros and cons and made the best decision for themselves. it also makes me think how people who say that clearly haven’t interacted with the hp fandom in a while. i’ve been here for well over a decade and i’ve never seen such a vocal saturation of diverse voices, transgender and of other minorities alike. the trans representation in headcanons, fanfiction and fanart alone skyrocketed in the recent years and it only seems to be climbing up. because now you just can’t exist in hp fandom spaces without being loudly anti jkr and a trans ally. and ironically, that’s the reason why the fandom has become a bit of a safe space for many
“stop making hp relevant” it’s going to be relevant. it’s way too big to force it out of existence. might as well keep making trans people happy

i love how h*rry p*tter fans are like "UGH don't bring politics into this i just want my fantasy escapism!!" like. you realize your fantasy escapism is in fact a privilege that you have right. maybe *you* can watch the movies about making sure the holocaust happens and read the books about how not all nazis are bad and play the game about the evil goblin bankers and feel escapism. but *i* can't.
