Chili’s humble beginnings heat up with history Classic dish also features a myriad of variations

Beans or no beans . . . seems to be the question or debate when it comes to chili. The dish is popular on restaurant menus, and in competitions that occur throughout the year to determine the best chili recipes.  And there are chili organizations including the International Chili Society https://www.chilicookoff.com/  whose mission is “to uphold the same core value of our founders by bringing together to enjoy healthy competition and America’s great culinary creation—CHILI. Our mission is to continuously improve chili while raising money for charities and non-profits year-round.”
Their mission is interesting, because we think of chili as a winter dish, however, as stated in their mission, chili competitions are popular events year ‘round. Notice, too, it is America’s creation. One thing that I learned in researching the dish is chili’s history is somewhat blurred.
A newer chili cookbook to join my collection is “Seriously Good Chili Cookbook: 177 of the Best Recipes in the World,” by Brian Baumgartner of the Emmy-winning show “The Office” where he played the accountant, Kevin Malone (2022, Fox Chapel Publishing, $24.99) His passion of making chili did not go unnoticed. He was invited to be a judge at the 2021 World Championship Chili Cook-Off sponsored by the International Chili Society.
Baumgartner mentions that the history of chili is “even a bit heated.” He said, “By many accounts, it is a red-blooded American dish; it did not originate in Mexico. In fact, Mexico denies any association with chili, and only a handful of spots serve it. Parts of Mexico that do serve chili only do so to please tourists.”
Was it in the 1880’s at San Antonio’s downtown, known for its famous Hispanic outdoor vendors called “chili queens” where the dish was first introduced? It is said that chili became popular outside of Texas at the San Antonio Chili stand during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Then, in the early 1900s chili parlors sprung up beyond Texas.
Baumgartner’s book gives myriad stories about the origins of the humble dish. He writes, some historians said, “the earliest versions of chili were made by the poorest class of people to stretch what little meat they could afford.”
“A Southwestern Native American legend claims the first chili con carne recipe was written in the 17th century by a mysterious nun, Sister Mary of Agreda of Spain.”  Another theory, “in 1731, a group of sixteen families emigrated to Texas to what is now San Antonio, from the Canary Islands. Historians say the women in those families would make a spicy Spanish stew that became known as ‘Soup of the Devil.’”
There is a cowboy story, too. A recipe from 1850 by Texan cowboys took dried beef, fat, pepper, salt and chile peppers and made “chili bricks” that were later rehydrated using very hot water. This became their go-to food during their long travels.
Baumgartner writes that “the Texas prison system made such good bowls of chili that inmates would rate each jail based on that provision alone!” Would you believe that once prisoners were released, they would request the chili recipe because it was what they missed most?
He writes about “Chili Goes Hollywood.” In 1936 Chasen’s Restaurant owner kept his recipe secretive. Famous people or their chauffeurs would come to the back door to buy the chili. The icons included Jack Benny, J. Edgar Hoover, Eleanor Roosevelt. He writes, “it is even said it was Clark Gable’s last meal and that Elizabeth Taylor had 10 quarts sent to her while she was filming Cleopatra in Rome, Italy.”
Several sources mentioned that President Lyndon B. Johnson, a chili lover said, “Chili concocted outside of Texas is usually a weak, apologetic imitation of the real thing. One of the first things I do when I get home to Texas is to have a bowl of red. There is simply nothing better.” Rumor has it that his wife, Lady Bird received many requests for her recipe, so she had her staff print cards with the Pedernales River Chili recipe. It was named after the location of President Johnson’s Texas ranch.
Baumgartner said, his goal in writing the book “is to share a collection of seriously good recipes—whether they are passed down from days of old or new and original takes.”
Whether it be Texas or Cincinnati chili, beans or no beans, meat or no meat, you’ll enjoy Baumgartner’s sense of humor, and his travels to find the best chili from people of different cultural backgrounds, and differing tastes. One thing, though, every chili recipe has one thing in common…chili pepper. He writes, “by making these recipes yourself, you’re taking part in a once-in-a-lifetime journey I went on myself to find them.”
It is clear that this humble dish is much more than its simple ingredients. The stories about its beginning are as varied as the ingredients used in making the perfect chili. It’s time to get out your biggest pot and make a batch of America’s iconic dish. Below are a few recipes from Baumgartner’s book.

Brian’s Seriously Good Chili Recipe by Brian Baumgartner
The headnote says, “This is it, folks. My own personal go-to chili recipe. Has it been passed down for generations? No. But it serves as my own best chili recipe that I cook all the time. Don’t be afraid to play! Like it spicier? Add red pepper flakes or Spicy Bush’s Chili Beans. Like it thicker? Feel free to cook this over the stove all day. (Just add water as needed for best consistency.) I felt it was important to add my personal favorite recipe to this book but know that it is always changing. I love exploring new flavors and employing new techniques every time I make it – so you should feel free to make any adjustments.”

1 tablespoon grapeseed oil (or cooking oil)
1 large yellow onion (or 1 cup shallots), chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
2 cloves garlic, diced
2 pounds lean ground turkey (or lean ground beef), undrained
One 6-ounce can tomato paste
One 24-ounce can diced tomatoes
One 16-ounce can tomato sauce
½ cup water (optional)
½ teaspoon black pepper
2 teaspoons salt
4 teaspoons chili powder
2 teaspoons ancho chile powder
3 teaspoons oregano
1 teaspoon sugar
1 (16-ounce can) Bush’s® Pinto Beans in a Mild Chili Sauce, undrained
1 (16-ounce can) Bush’s® Kidney Beans in a Mild Chili Sauce, undrained
Garnish: shredded cheddar cheese
1.     In a large pot, sauté the chopped onion, green bell pepper, and garlic in oil over medium-high heat. I like to use grapeseed oil because it’s a little less oily.
2.     Add in the ground turkey or beef. Before the meat has completely cooked, add the tomato paste. Finish browning the meat completely.
3.     Stir in the remaining ingredients, except the beans and the cheese. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat. Cover and simmer on low heat for 30 minutes (or longer until the desired consistency is reached), stirring occasionally.
4.     Then, 20 minutes before serving, add the beans. You can’t add the beans in right away or they get mushy.
5.     Finish with sharp cheddar cheese. Any leftovers are easy to freeze.

Slow Cooker Cheesy Chicken Chili
by Amanda Dorich from Windber, PA
The headnote says, “This is no ordinary chicken chili! It is made in a slow cooker and is full of secret ingredients, but, most importantly, it is extremely cheesy. Everyone loves topping their chili with cheese, but putting the cheese into the actual chili is even more delicious and adds great texture and flavor.”

2 chicken breasts
2 (25-ounce cans) diced tomatoes and green chiles (I use Rotel)
2 (25-ounce) cans corn
32 ounces chicken broth
1 packet dry ranch seasoning
8 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
Salt and pepper, to taste
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon cumin
1 tablespoon garlic powder
8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Garnishes: extra cheese, Fritos® corn chips, hot sauce
1.     Beginning with the chicken at the very bottom, add all the ingredients to the slow cooker except for the cream cheese, cheddar cheese, and toppings.
2.     Set the temperature to low and cook for 6–8 hours or high for 4 hours. Halfway through the cook time, add the cream cheese.
3.     When you’re ready to eat, shred the chicken and add the cheddar cheese. Give the cheese a few minutes to melt, then serve with your desired toppings.

Vegan Pumpkin Lentil Quinoa Chili
by Kaleigh McMordie from Abiline, TX
The headnote says, “This recipe uses canned pumpkin to lean into the fall feeling, while also thickening the chili without hours of simmering. I’m very much an omnivore and often feel let down by vegetarian chili recipes, so I set out to create a vegetarian chili that still has the stick-to-your-ribs feel of traditional beef chili. Using both quinoa and lentils lends the familiar texture of chili con carne while also adding plant protein that you may not always find in vegetarian versions.”
Tumblr media
Photo:  Kaleigh McMordie
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 red bell pepper, diced
1 small onion, diced
2 carrots, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup dry (uncooked) quinoa
1 cup dry (uncooked) lentils
1 (15-ounce can) low-sodium black beans, drained and rinsed
1 (15-ounce can) low-sodium diced tomatoes
1 (4-ounce can) diced green chiles, mild or spicy
4 cups low-sodium vegetable stock
1 (15-ounce can) pure pumpkin purée
1 tablespoon chili powder
½ tablespoon cumin
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
½ tablespoon smoked paprika
Garnishes: cheese, sour cream, avocado, cilantro, sliced jalapeño
1.     In a large pot, heat the oil over medium heat.
2.     Add the pepper, onion, carrots, and garlic. Cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring, until the veggies are slightly softened.
3.     Add the remaining ingredients and stir to combine.
4.     Cover the pot and reduce the heat to low. Let simmer for 30–45 minutes, stirring about every 15 minutes.
5.     Serve the chili hot and garnish with any toppings you like, such as cheese, sour cream, avocado, cilantro, or sliced jalapeño.

Translation of the Interview below  ↓
Interviewer: It’s 5:39 p.m., one hour less in the Canary Islands. We’ve said a few weeks ago that during this confinement, La Casa de Papel has become Netflix’s most watched non-English speaking TV show. I don’t just mean Spain, obviously. I’m speaking about the entire world.
And we’re seeing just that in this program’s Twitter account. You can’t imagine the amount of messages we’ve received from the corners of the five continents since announcing it today and we’re going to talk to them now.
The day Season 4 premiered – just that first day – it was watched by 34 million people. That’s data that Netflix itself has released. This is a show that started here in Antena 3.
Here to talk to us, we have two confined people. Not in the Bank of Spain, but in their homes I suppose.
They are Álvaro Morte. How are you, Álvaro? Good afternoon.
Álvaro: Good afternoon, Julia. It’s a pleasure. How are you?
Interviewer: Likewise. And Itziar Ituño, to whom I’m going to refer to as the Inspector because… Itziar, good afternoon.
Itziar: Good afternoon, Julia. How are you?
Interviewer: I’ll call her the Inspector Murillo because earlier we said something else and I got called out. Some people were like: ‘we’re still on Season 1!’ and I told them ‘Okay, okay! The Inspector Murillo and that’s that… We won’t say anything else.’ Who is the best person I’ve ever seen put her hair up with a pencil in History.
Itziar: [ laughs ] Yes. Well, University and many hours of studying, you know…
Interviewer: Yes. That’s the thing. These things require a great intellectual effort, right?
Itziar: [ laughs ] Yes.
Interviewer: Álvaro, where were you when the State of Emergency began?
Álvaro: Luckily, I was shooting a TV show in Prague – The Wheel of Time (La Roda del Tiempo) and I had just finished it a week before everything happened. So I was home. I was caught in the middle of all of this. And now I’m in my house in Madrid.
Interviewer: That was lucky. Because another week, you’d be stuck with the TV show halfway done without an ending.
Álvaro: Of course. Can you imagine? We would have had to stop filming, stop everything… Imagine if I hadn’t finished my part. Since I won’t be available until this passes. Thankfully, my part is done and I’m home, enjoying some time with my little ones.
Interviewer: You have two little ones, Álvaro? What are their ages?
Álvaro: Five. Five years-old.
Interviewer: Five years-old. Just the one?
Álvaro: No. They’re twins.
Interviewer: Oh, you have twins! Five year-old twins. Of course, you must be distracted then.
Álvaro: Just picture it. I don’t have time for myself.
Interviewer: Because 5 years-old…
Álvaro: [ laughs ] I have no problem finding things to distract myself with during the quarantine. I’m very envious.
Interviewer: It’s an age where they distract a lot and they move around a lot. Well, and in Itziar Ituño’s case… Where were you when the quarantine began, Itziar?
Itziar: I was close to home. Because I was in the Basque Country, where I was shooting a film and a mini-series. I was going home to spend the night, so I was home as well. For which I’m grateful.
Interviewer: Well, I was going to ask you both if this international boom the show [LCDP] has caused had lead to other offers, but you’ve already answered. You’re full of work, with other shows and films. Álvaro.
Álvaro: Yes. Fortunately, this wave that La Casa de Papel has created has opened a lot of doors for me and brought offers on the table, and many other great things.
You have a dream of working and, suddenly, you get a chance like this… of working with these people. And, well, I have a friend with projects that are in a bit of a standstill right now. So if I already feel privileged to have work as an actor in this country… even more so when our career is doing well and we can almost chose, you know? I feel truly lucky and very honored.
But I don’t know where I’ll be tomorrow. It might all be gone. So I’m just trying to live in the moment and enjoy it.
Interviewer: And Itziar, are you living something similar?
Itziar: Yes. It’s true that, in the long run, there were a lot of projects on the horizon - apart from the ones that have been kind of on lockdown because of this Pandemic. And we’re just waiting to see what happens.
What Álvaro said is true. We have the good fortune of being able to chose what work we want to do. And I think we’re very lucky to be part of the show and to have this opportunity because it’s true that most of our fellow actors are in a terrible situation, especially now. We’ll see how the country’s Culture will also be after all of this…
Interview: Well, it’s going to be the last thing to return – concerts, theatre, all of it. There’s going to be people that will have a lot of trouble putting food on the table, with no income at the end of the month.
Itziar: Yes. That’s another big concern we all have. We’ll see what happens.
Interviewer: We’ll see what happens. Well, what kind of relationships do all of you keep? For example, the two of you – Álvaro and Itziar – How long has it been since you’ve spoken over the phone?
Itziar: I don’t remember. Álvaro…
Álvaro: A long time, a long time. [ laughs ]
Interviewer: I don’t believe it. Really? Really?
Álvaro: We talk on the phone a lot on the show. [ laughs ]
Interviewer: A lot.
Itziar: We do have a group on Whatsapp and everyone from La Casa de Papel keeps in touch that way. Actually speak… I think it was at that Antena 3 thing when we saw each other.
Álvaro: Yes.
Itziar: But over the phone… it’s very rare.
Interviewer: Well, well, well… Here I had the notion that you guys were like a family. I suppose the audience is very taken by the media and the fictional image of the group – myself included.
Álvaro: But we really are a kind of family. In a healthy family, you share everything with everyone. In a way, right? Then, to that effect, we are all very much in contact with each other. We know where everybody else is and all that. It’s better than making individual connections. There’s a strong bond between all of us.
Itziar: Besides, we all lead our own lives, busy and stressed with a thousand projects. And it’s not until we see each other again, when we come back for the next season, that we settle down and immediately catch up and recover.
[unintelligible]
Interviewer: That must be a kind of Sudoku for the Production Manager of the show. There must be a signed contract of sorts, where you commit to being available from this date to this date. Otherwise, it would be impossible for all of you to be there.
Álvaro: Yes, that’s true. We do that in advance. Because anything can happen – like this Pandemic or any other type of event and, suddenly, everything can get delayed or you have to change dates or your schedule no longer coincides with other people’s schedule. It’s complicated, but it can be done.
Interviewer: And when, suddenly, one day, you see Stephen King himself praising La Casa de Papel on Twitter, even putting on the Dalí mask, which is a characteristic emblem of the show. Of course, it’s hard to predict success… What do you think is this x-factor that all creators search for and so few achieve?
Álvaro.
It’s difficult to define it, but it has it.
Álvaro: Yes. There’s always a component of inexplicable magic – because, if we could define it as it is, it could replicate it with other TV shows and they would all be hits. That’s impossible, it can’t be done.
But, having said that, I believe that it is a combination of things – it’s not a single factor. I think there are some very well constructed characters right off the script, that suffer passions with which we can perfectly identify with as the viewer. I’m talking about what happens inside of them, with their feelings.
There’s an iconography: the red jumpsuits, the masks, the song ‘Bella Ciao’… And I’m going to add something else that’s very important – well, two more things – the show has a very good balance between the drama, the comedy, the action, the romanticism… I think it’s all very well balanced.
But, above all of it, there’s one thing the show puts on the table – and that is this concept of ‘hey, maybe things aren’t as good as we have been led to believe’, and though we might be small, we can still hit the table and say ‘What’s going on here? Let’s try to change things.’.
Maybe the little guy can take on the big guy sometimes, you know?
And I think that everyone, at some point in their lives, has felt like they’re small fish in some regard. So it’s very easy to identify with the message the show delivers. And a lot of its success is due to this feeling we have of ‘The Resistance’ and the idea that we have to change a system that looks corrupt or doesn’t work anymore.
Itziar: I agree with him. There’s something irreverent about it, about putting up a fight that has had a great impact on an international level, with the discontent we all have deep inside.
It’s a bit like putting the human being at the center of the concerns of the world as a paradigm of life. And I think that that’s how it engages, how it connects in so many countries, all so different from the rest.
Interviewer: By the way, Álvaro – Would you like to play a silly character?
Álvaro: Well, I would try it. I believe that characters… Look, they’ve asked me in other interviews that I’ve done, what other character from La Casa de Papel would I like to play and I suppose…
Well, first off, how wonderful is my colleagues’ work. All and every single one of them is wonderful and I think that the construction they’ve done of thee character from the script is beyond fabulous.
So I would love to do any of their roles, but trying to get away…
Interviewer: Of course.
Álvaro: From The Profesor.
Interviewer: Let me tell you, the challenge – as an actor – would be to be believable while playing a silly character. Because no one can imagine you like that. Which means, this will haunt you for the rest of your life.
[ Álvaro laughs ]
Álvaro: Look, I also believe that the Profesor is very intelligent, but only in certain aspects. He’s very intelligent when it comes to planning or on a systematic and methodical level, but when it comes to emotional intelligence… the man is quite lost.
[ laughs ]
He needs a boost in that sense. So it’s not true that he’s absolutely bright. I think he has his areas of intelligent action and his areas in which he’s very awkward.
That’s why, perhaps, I did find him an attractive character.
The moment that I’m asked to play a character that is completely different from The Professor, that’s when I begin to get interested. Because it’s already done, and so it’s not very interesting to repeat.
Interviewer: Sure, sure. By the way, we have asked the listeners that are fans of La Casa de Papel to leave question. Some have already sent some through Twitter, for example… Itziar, a listener asked if you guys see yourselves making a spin-off of the show as a couple.
[ Itziar laughs ]
Interviewer: Listen, it’s an idea. It’s an idea.
Álvaro: It’s an idea, yes.
Itziar: I don’t know. I don’t know if it that big of a deal. I don’t know – I’m not a big fan of stretching stories out like gum, because sometimes they break, you know?
And no, I don’t no. You have to be very careful with these things, because when you have a formula that works very well. A lot of the time… doing experiments like this, it doesn’t turn out so well.
It’s true that there are a lot of people that love all of the characters and I think they want to have more and more, to know more about each of their stories. But I don’t know…I don’t know.
What do you think, Álvaro?
Álvaro: Well, that I… I don’t know. I, right off the bat, I thought that as a spin-off, I would suggest that it could explore the challenges they could face as a couple. In any case, there is no point in doing a spin-off of… I still not quite sure what your opinion is.
Interviewer: It’s curious because there are many people – many viewers – that are in love with the love of your fictional characters, right? There are people who are in love with love, even if it is the love of others and a fictional love.
And I see on Twitter, that there are hundreds of messages from people who want to believe almost, that it’s real… that it’s real life. It’s what fiction leads us to.
Well, another listener sent in his question, he asks – ‘ask the Profesor when the vaccine for Covid-19 is coming out. I’m sure he knows’. [ laughs ]
Álvaro: If only.
Interviewer: If only.
Álvaro: I would have to ask Álex Pina, he’s the one who ultimately writes the character of the Profesor. As far as I’m concerned, the sooner the better. I’ve been involved in a movement called #YoMeCorono, I’m sure you’ve heard of it.
Interviewer: Yes, yes.
Álvaro: To try to get funding for the vaccine and-
Interviewer: The one with Bonaventura Clotet, the doctor.
Álvaro: That’s right. So, I don’t know if the Profesor knows or doesn’t know when the vaccine is going to come out, but I would like to appeal to all the people to do their small part so that we can all get out of this as soon as possible.
And if we look around, I’m certain – certain! – that with a simple glance, we can say ‘I could do without this, I could do without this, I don’t need this, I spent a lot of money on this here and I never use it’ and a small contribution from each of us could save many lives.
I think that – right now, in times like these – I feel that we have a great opportunity to stop and think about the importance of all this that’s happening and react a little bit.
Of course, we have to react as a society. But we also have the opportunity to show what we’re like as individuals.
Interviewer: And what do you think, Itziar, every time you see a demonstration demanding justice where there are people dressed up in red jumpsuits and Dalí masks singing ‘Bella Ciao’?
That must be moving, right?
Itziar: It’s very moving to think that you’re a part of a show that has become such a social phenomenon and that people are taking its symbols as an emblem of many protests and vindications. And to go a little against the grain and against the establishment that, most of the time, isn’t fair at all.
So, it’s very moving to see that, in a student manifestation on the other side of the world, they’re singing ‘Bella Ciao’; or in Brazil, on the 8th of March, the women were doing their own verses of the song. I found this incredible. I’m very thrilled about it.
Interviewer: Beyond that, I think we were touched – as Álvaro says – about the Open Arms ship that, when they rescued a boat full of migrants…
Itziar: Wow.
Interviewer: …on the high seas,
Álvaro: Yes.
Interviewer: …and the moment they stepped on land, they suddenly began singing ‘Bella Ciao’.
Álvaro: Yes.
Itziar: [ unintelligible ]
Álvaro: Of course. I don’t know to what extent it was because of the show or not, but…
Interviewer: I’m sure it was.
Álvaro: Because if so…
Interviewer: Definitely.
Álvaro: It was kind of exciting wasn’t it? People were saving lives and, in that moment of emotion, …
Itziar: Wow.
Álvaro: …they start singing ‘Bella Ciao’. It’s very touching.
Interviewer: Do you want to hear comments or questions from the listeners? Here, they have left them for you, for Álvaro Morte and Itziar Ituño. Let’s see what they have to say:
Fan #1: Well, first of all – hello to both of you. I admire you a lot, you’re both terrific actors. It’s a question for both of you, but more directed at Álvaro, because you’ve gone from 7 million to 10 million followers on Instagram in almost two weeks. How do you deal with being so well known around the world? How are you? How do you channel it? How do you get your head around it?
Fan #2: Good afternoon. My question is for Itziar Ituño. I would like to ask her what she thinks Itziar and Raquel have in common. And the similarities that there can be between a character and an actor, especially since they’re both incredibly strong women.
Fan #3: Hello. You’re the best actors in the world. I’m waiting for Season 5. It’s the best show I’ve ever watched and I hope to meet you someday. Carlota. I love you guys so much. Love you. [kiss]
Interviewer: Well, okay…
[ Álvaro & Itziar laugh ]
Interviewer: We have put one of these messages as a representative of the minimum of 150 that we have received.
Itziar: My God!
Interviewer: Well…
Álvaro: My God!
Interviewer: The first question for Álvaro, and then onto Itziar.
Álvaro: Well, look… this thing of being famous and all, it’s a little unsettling. I try to keep my feet on the ground, I try to take all of this with a lot of humor, with good sense and humility.
It’s true that when you suddenly drop from anonymity and, no matter where you go on the planet, you get stopped on the street. Wherever you go, they stop you in the street to take pictures with you and there is a moment when intimacy is out of your control.
There’s been a time when I have had to learn – and it’s something that’s been very difficult for me, because every time a fan has approached me to ask for a picture… Of course, we’re here for them too. Absolutely. And it’s because of them that we’re here.
And whenever I’ve been asked for a picture, I’ve always said yes and I’ve had to learn to say no when I’m with my family for example. When I’m with my family, I don’t want them to be part of this whole circus–
Interviewer: Of course.
Álvaro: –that is created around this whole story of what fame is. I knew from the moment I decided to be an actor, that this might be a collateral damage. But they can’t be a part of it.
I’ve tried to leave them a little bit out of this.
Interviewer: Sure, sure.
Álvaro: And I always try to agree to it, but there are things like having your picture taken from afar without your permission or things of that sort. That I don’t handle well, people being like that… But I try to take it calmly and with humor, and that’s it.
Interviewer: And Itziar? What is there of Itziar Ituño in Raquel or vice versa? Two strong women.
Itziar: The question was about – and I think so – if we have things in common. Raquel Murillo, she works in a world… well, in the Police, for example, where men are the ones who exercise the power.
She has to make people respect her, she has to maintain her authority and power. And how can a woman with her life upside down – I don’t have my life upside down, thank God [laughs] – but I’ve some of those things have happened to me.
Having to make people respect you because of your condition as a woman, you’re not as heard than I believe. Well, I’m not telling you anything new. Many of us, women, have been through it. So, in that sense, it’s very easy to understand.
[ unintelligible ]   …
At the same time, she endures a series of blows with grace and this chick pushes forward and I admire it very much. She seems to be very vulnerable but she has an inner strength that makes her forge ahead all the time. And the truth is that I’m delighted with this character.
Interviewer: That’s true. There was a meme circulating on Whatsapp in which we see Úrsula Corberó (Tokyo in the show) saying to the Profesor: “Profesor, when the fourth season comes out, everyone will working and at school, and nobody will watch it”, to which the Profesor replies: “This is where we begin Plan Wuhan.”
[ Álvaro & Itziar laugh ]
Interviewer: “Four months before the premiere, our man in China will eat a bat…”
Álvaro: Right, right.
Interviewer: It’s very powerful stuff.
Álvaro: Okay, okay…
Interviewer: Wonderful.
Álvaro: We’re getting people to wake up to their genius in this quarantine; There’s a lot of stuff that comes out of there… it doesn’t work.
Interviewer: A huge thanks to Álvaro Morte and Itziar Ituño, who have been here for a little while on the radio. When the confinement is over and you guys aren’t filming, we’ll sit down together – which will be very pleasant.
Álvaro: Hopefully.
Interviewer: I love the show. I’m another fan. Thank you.
Álvaro: Thank you.
Interviewer: Thank you both.
Itziar: Thank you very much, Julia.
Álvaro: A kiss.
Interviewer: See you soon.
Álvaro: A kiss. See you soon.
Itziar: See you soon. Ciao.
Interviewer: News. It’s six o’clock.

As today is the day of the Canary Islands, I am making some special posts about our magical traditions - enjoy ❤️, and check my wall for more posts!
This is kneaded Gofio, the most important of all Canarian foods - Gofio is a toasted flour made with chickpeas and many different cereals, that is added to soups or milk, or kneaded with milk, honey, and spices, just like in the picture below. Extremely nutritious and healthy food that predates the spanish conquest, and that we still eat almost daily.

Hey I have a question about creating countries that are made up of islands, but not have seafood as a staple and vegetarianism is the norm among religious adherents and even among common people vegetarianism isn't unheard of. How can that make sense?
Tex: I don’t know how far back you want to look in order to find an island culture that doesn’t eat seafood or any other type of meat, but for the sake of context I’ll be throwing some darts around the map and see what island cultures typically eat.
I’ll start with Pacific Islanders and list a few of the cultures from the Pacific Ocean:
Polynesian region, composed of peoples such as the Samoans, Māori, Tahitians, Native Hawaiians, and Tongans
Micronesian region, composed of peoples such as the Carolinians, Chamorros, Chuukese, and Nauruans
Melanesian region, composed of peoples such as the Papuans, Moluccans, the Austronesian descendants in Vanuatu, and at a stretch the Torres Strait Islanders of Australia
These groups are roughly divided into two ethnolinguistic groups: the Austronesian peoples who speak Oceanic languages, and the Papuan peoples who speak the Papuan languages. For the most part, both groups are from Southeast Asia (the Papuan first wave was from the Malay Archipelago), and their linguistic origins reflect that.
It should be noted that none of these people ultimately originated from these island regions - they all came from part of a continent that was close to the Pacific Ocean. Ye olde ages ago did their ancestors decide to strike out and immigrate to new areas, and their diet adapted accordingly. Religions that ban the eating of things like shellfish and animals are a comparatively recent phenomenon, because it meant abstaining from an easily-accessible food source.
I’m going to momentarily branch off and list some island cultures of the Atlantic Ocean so my examples are a little more balanced:
Northern: Faroe Islands (Danish, sort of), Iceland, Baffin Island (Canada)
Eastern: Azores (Portugal), Canary Islands (Spain), Madeira (Portugal), São Tomé and Príncipe (Gulf of Guinea)
Western: Barbados of the Lesser Antilles, Prince Edward Island (Canada, a traditional island of the Miꞌkmaq), and Cuba (native lands of the Guanahatabey, Taíno, and Ciboney)
Antarctic region: Tierra del Fuego (Chile, native land to the Yaghan),
Many of these islands were close to nearby continents, and often traded with each other for resources, so there is cultural precedent of eating things other than marine life. A couple examples would be the Taíno, and the Kalinago peoples, both of whom originate from South America. The Yaghan “traveled by canoes between islands to collect food: the men hunted sea lions, while the women dove to collect shellfish”, so still ate some form of meat.
For a couple of Atlantic island examples that did not have indigenous people: the sailors who visited Ascension Island hunted the local birds and turtles for food, and those whole lived on Saint Helena imported livestock, fruit trees, and vegetables for the purpose of colonization.
Many, if not all, of these Atlantic islanders also ate meat of some sort, be it livestock from a continent, birds, fish, or shellfish. Historically speaking, meat of any sort was a cheaply-obtained food in terms of net caloric gain compared to net calories spent obtaining said food.
While the over-consumption of anything is bad, and red meats in particular are often touted as lending an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases - which a 2016 meta-analysis noted frequently occurred with a lifestyle risk factor (Citation 1) -  red meat in moderation is fairly healthy (Citation 2, Citation 3). There is evidence that diet affects the activation of different alleles (phys.org), which is indicative of a population’s change toward agriculture (Citation 4), though in particular an overconsumption of carbohydrates can result in metabolic inflammation and obesity (ScienceDaily).
Humans are omnivorous by default, and require 20 amino acids in order to be healthy. The nine that the human body cannot produce must be consumed from an outside source - MedicalNewsToday does an excellent job of breaking this down and informing readers of viable sources of each of these essential amino acids. Unfortunately for those who might have abstained from meat before the invention of supplements, the healthiest diet for them was made with the addition of dairy products (Citation 5, eggs (The Incredible Egg, Citation 6), and fish (Seafood Health Facts 1, Seafood Health Facts 2, Citation 7)
As I don’t know the level of technology your countries, I cannot make the assumption that non-meat amino acids can be created and distributed to your populace in a relatively inexpensive manner. The nutrient density of meat vs non-meat foods is debatable (Citation 8), so I would hesitate to forgo meat entirely in a culture without some reason as to why an otherwise viable source of nutrition cannot be used.
Human nutrition is plainly a complex topic with many sub-specialities, and would take any one of us a very long time to adequately explain even a portion of it, especially in conjunction with anthropological factors such as geographic origin and developed cultural norms. I’ve added some more things to peruse in the Further Reading section below, but please be aware that all of this only starts to scratch the surface of what you’ve asked. If you would like to return with more precise questions, we’d be more than happy to try answering them.

Saphira: A less historical approach would be to analyze why the Vegetarianism is highlighted by Religious pursuit. I would even gamble that the culture was originally focused on seafood, until something changed. Did a new predator enter the seas, making it hard to feed the people? Did they overfish? Who knows.
But something saved them from starvation when the waters rose empty. Things grew on land. Either it was a gift from the Divines that they worship, or a Prophet, or perhaps there’s even a stranger lore more Maoi styled: And so the [Divine] in all their wisdom told [ancient hero] to take the last fish of the sea, and plant it on the highest hill. [Ancient hero] fed their family from the catch, but did not eat the last fish. Hungry and tired, they climbed to the highest peak and planted the fish in the Earth- and the [Divine] blessed his faith and good will. From the fish sprouted the first [main plant food], in such abundance, that [Ancient Hero] ate their fill, and brought down the plenty for the first farmers.Contrived? Yes. Tried and true? You betcha. Consider how the habits and the rituals they serve today serve as tethers, or tangible connections to their heritage, history and culture.
Constablewrites: Writing With Color covered the role of cows in Hinduism here, which might be helpful for framing your thinking. But when religion is negatively impacting the survival of the community, it’s generally more likely that religion sprouts a loophole than that the whole tribe piously starves to death. Hello, person probably interested in Erasmus+ projects!
This is a little explanation about Erasmus in general and my 3rd Erasmus+ experience in Ponte de Lima, Portugal.
So whats an Erasmus+ project?
Well ,from what I have seen so far  ( I have been on 4 projects ) they are an opportunity financed by the EU to connect people from different countries both in the EU and outside ( Turkey, Armenia , Ukraine etc ). Unlike the university Erasmus programs lasting from 3 months to 1 year, their duration is 10 days. They use non-formal education which means that you learn a lot but you have more freedom on the process, to express yourself and consequently to represent your country indirectly. There are 2 types of projects - Youth exchanges  ( YE ) and Training courses ( TC ) .
The YE (such as this one ) give you more free time to network and have fun, the TC are more intense and focused on the topic of the course. Also, YE have a age limit ( 18-30 ) but the courses don’t (18 + ) meaning that on the courses you can find people 30+ yo. ( I met a person 44 yo once ) You can find projects in all of Europe  ( I am currently in Denmark ) plus some funky places like the Canary islands cause they are on paper part of Spain, same as islands part of France, Portugal etc. For this ‘youth work’ you receive a Youth certificate to put in your CV which in certain fields gives you huge advantage as it shows that you have experience in an international multicultural work setting.
There is a possibility for administrative tax from the sending organisation , the organisators or both in the range of 20-50 euro in total.
The projects all operate on schedule. Breakfast, activity, coffee break, activity, lunch, activity, coffee break 2 , dinner, cultural night , party , rinse and repeat.
They are very intense in a good way. You are almost never alone, you meet so much new and different people, you learn things you would never learn in school about the world and about yourself, you find yourself in discussions that would never occur in your bubble of life about various topics, you are presented with so much information about life, politics, traditions etc.
When it comes to expenses they cover your transport ( up to a limit, that you usually don’t surpass ) and food ( 3 meals, 2 coffee breaks with snacks).
Another cool opportunity is to come before or stay after the project to explore the country and party for 2-3 days.
Now, about this project.
The Youth Exchange was called  ”Healthy me, Healthy You(th)!” . My sending organisation was  International center for development of education and training ( Bulgaria ) In the project we had a diverse group of participants representing Bulgaria, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Hungary , Slovakia and  Greece. ( 30ish people ) We were living together, laughing together, working together and partying together and when the time came we left together.
They took us from the airport in Porto with good bus ( clean, maintained, airconditioned ) and after the project left us at the same spot.
The venue was Albergue da Quinta de Pentieiros .We were on a farm with sheep, horses ,cows, gardens etc. I was thrilled cause I have never spend a day on a farm or a village and one lamb let me pet it. It was quiet and beautiful.
All the girls were in one room, the boys in the next , all of us with bunk beds. The bathroom situation was challenging. We had people visit the near city Ponte de Lima for groceries. As for laundry ,there were a paid option ( 5 euro i think ) , the cleaned the clothes, dried and folded them for you which was super nice.
The project was aimed to help us connect with each other to discuss the health problems each of our countries face. We learned how to make first aid , how to analyse major issues, how to network , how to come up with solutions for different problems and how to communicate effectively.
We worked on strategy for young people in a future pandemic or similar crisis ( like spreading awareness amongst the uneducated masses who do not understand the need for precautions, providing help with everyday tasks for people who are in difficult positions, distributing means of safe drug usage for people who are using , making several platforms for free fitness, books, courses of languages and programming etc.
We had a roleplay of an important pharmaceutical real case about HIV drugs in Africa in which we explored the legal system, learned to formulate effective arguments and educated ourselves on the difficult process on producing and distributing medicines.
We had a representative of the Red Cross in Portugal who did great job at explaining to us the measures that Portugal has taken to tackle the drug abuse problem they had 20 years ago ( they are leading in the rank list of countries with most effective strategy on that matter )  and also to help us understand that addiction is not a sin or taboo but rather a sickness that need addressing like any other.
We had an Olympic champion Fernando Pimenta. He told us about his way of life, his short term and long term goals, mindset and the importance of strong support system ( friends and family ).
We had firefighters as part of the program to help us learn how to do first aid in several different situations, what’s the best strategy in case of fire, broken bones, broken nose, choking with food etc. We performed CPR and other vital procedures.
We had a free day in Ponte de Lima to explore and have fun with arranged transport ( if you visit go to the gardens , they are one of a kind )
In the first photo you can see all of us infront of our working space, in the second photo you can see my co-workers during my presentation for the project in Bulgaria.  Its part of the dissemination process ( meaning the money refund process and evaluation of a work well done ) to spread awareness about this opportunity that EU gives to its young people . In the last photo you see us in our free time activities where we went on a short hike to explore the area with a person born and raised in the area. I gotta say, it was clean and well maintained. They take their nature seriously.
My advise is READ THE INFO PACK AND GO ! ‘
Safe travels, Iliana XO

Canary Islands: The escape across the ocean of darkness
Tumblr media
Tenerife, the Canary Islands
Thousands of years ago Berber tribes, amongst them the Canariis, arrived from Northwest Africa to the fortunate islands (the Canary Islands).
As the islands had an important strategic position that offered great trade possibilities as well as hosting passing by ships, offering them a safe haven in stormy weather and plenty of provision originating from the rich volcanic earth the islands offered.
The Guanches, the first known inhabitants and natives to the islands, lived a good life for thousands of years, until the Castilians (Spaniards) attempted to conquer the archipelago, after having failed to conquer North Africa, and they shifted their plans and decided to conquer the Americas instead.
To succeed in this prospect they needed to conquer the Canary Islands first, as the location served as a natural bridge between continents thus making a perfect base for their expansion expeditions.
The wars for the islands lasted for hundred years and proved to be much more tough and complicated than first anticipated.
But when the downfall finally came it brought with it a long line of horrific consequences.
The Guanches were enslaved, humiliated and systematically killed in terrible ways.
The remaining aboriginals had only three options; to submit, to run into hiding in the inaccessible mountains or to flee across the Atlantic.
Bentor, the last Guanche king in Taoro, Tenerife, met a sorrowful destiny, putting an end to thousands of years of Guanche rule.
But it was the beginning of a new story, following the Guanches in their struggle across the Atlantic and towards a new life with new adventures in the new world, faraway from their ancestors and their beloved islands.
A ray of hope
Tumblr media
Guanche
The small family “Aday” had been walking through the pine wood covered mountains and dense laurel rainforest, seeking cover, for two and a half full moons (two and a half months).
It had been hard and challenging, they were surviving on fruits, herbs and roots or what nature could offer.
Haridian’s husband, Atacaicate was a herb collector, used to the dense forests and inaccessible terrain on the mountains of north western Tenerife, he knew his way around well.
From time to time he caught a rabbit, a bird or some other small animal they could eat.
Haridian was most concerned about Airam, their two year old son.
She wanted to make sure he got enough food and stayed healthy.
They were hiding from the Castilians, who five months earlier conquered Taoro.
Large parts of their neighbours and villagers had either been killed, enslaved or shipped away to unknown destinations.
The situation had gotten so bad that staying in the village would have gotten them into great danger.
Atacaicate’s (his name means “big heart”) father was killed earlier that year, that was when his brothers decided to use their precious trade connections to try to escape, over the sea of darkness, to save both their and their families life and honour.
The rest of Atacaicate’s family had already left and they had taken Haridian’s father and sisters with them, her mother died long ago.
Haridian and Atacaicate couldn’t join them, as  Airam (meaning “freedom”) was seriously ill at the time.
But Atacaicate’s brothers promised to arrange another ship, to come and get Atacaicate and his family three months later, on the first day of full moon.
They were supposed to wait for a signal, at Tacoronte beach, hiding behind the cliffs.
Atacaicate got his profession as herb collector from his father the great “ Achxuraxan  Aday”, who started out as a herb collector, then developed great knowledge in curing diseases, as a result he worked in his later years, as a doctor at the royal court, while his sons collected herbs, in his stead, from the mountains.
Tumblr media
Pico del Teide, Tenerife
Atacaicate also learned about medicine making and how to cure illnesses from his late father, and he had been able to cure little Airam’s illness, the boy was now completely cured.
As Airam was cured and only two weeks remained before their departure, they started to close up to Tacoronte through the lavish rainforest, they slept in caves by night and walked by day on the route to their destination.
It was funny, when Haridian was born her father, who was a shepherd, decided to call her Haridian partly because the name is related to shepherds but more importantly because the Guanches used to give young girls who were born during the full moon that name, as it meant “Moonlight”.
Maybe that would bring them luck now, on the first day of the full moon, to depart safely and arrive well in the new country (Cuba).
Two weeks later after walking through lush rainforest and steep mountain cliffs they reached Tacoronte.
From the mountain cliff the view was spectacular, they settled down and waited patiently for nightfall to come.
The pale moon was not enough to lighten up the pitch dark bay, and the only thing you heard was the squeaking sound of small animals or insects in the vegetated areas and the reassuring sound of the ocean.
Haridian started to get anxious, would they be able to leave? Was it the right place? They were so close, yet it seemed unreal, her heart was pounding faster and faster.
Airam was asleep when they heard the sound of a small bark.
Was that the one? Haridian and Atacaicate stayed quiet behind the rock, then finally they noticed the promising sound of “el Silbo” (the Guanche whistle language), and they hurried towards the small row boat.
Twenty minutes later they embarked a ship that prepared right away to depart.
As the ship began to move, Haridian and Atacaicate stood in the back of the ship, looking at their island disappearing, forever. devastated but simultaneously relieved, as they were safe now, they realised they belonged to the lucky few.
One month and ten days later they arrived at Bariay on the east coast of Cuba, now a new chapter in their lives was about to begin.
Tumblr media
Tenerife, the Canary Islands
*Based partially on historical accounts, legends and folk stories.
The Canary migrations, a new future
The systematic killing of the Guanche population resulted in that ,roughly estimated, 75% of the aboriginals were eradicated. The Spaniards had later difficulties populating the archipelago again, no Spaniard wanted to travel that far or to live on an isolated island.
The ones remaining were either enslaved, hid in the mountains or a few lucky ones were able to escape across the Atlantic Ocean or elsewhere.
This last option was possible thanks to the ancient trade relations, friendships they made in the past.
Tumblr media
Beach in Cuba
It was certainly no coincidence many of  the fugitives chose Cuba as their final destination and new home, the reasons were many.
Once an islander always an islanders, the Guanches who arrived in Spanish America called themselves “Isleños” (islanders) as they were also referred to by the Latin Americans at the time and still are today.
It must have felt most as home in Cuba, surrounded on all sides by the familiar Atlantic Ocean.
Another reason for choosing Cuba was indeed the fact that family and friends, who arrived earlier, settled down there and formed a tight Canarian community.
The Guanche immigration to Cuba began in 1492 with the first ship of immigrants arriving on the 27 of October 1492, at Bariay on the east point of Cuba.
Tumblr media
Havana, Cuba
Their numbers were so great that the enormous Canarian migration to Cuba resulted in that 50% of all marriages at one point in history in the whole of Cuba was to a Canarian. As there was no end to the Canarian refugees, the Cuban government had to forbid any further Canarian migration and the canarians were forced to look for an alternative migration destination.
Many of the newcomers worked in the tobacco industry, where they helped the Cubans build up their prosperous tobacco commerce.
The first Cuban writer was isleño, and born in the Canary Islands.* see end article.
The Canarian descendents preserved their culture and traditions through celebrations of various cultural festivals.
An example is the festival of Canarian traditions held annually and the contest called: Princess Dácil, in honour of the Guanche princess.
Cuba owes much of its speech patterns and accent to the heavy Canarian migrations, a lot of ancient Guanche words, as well as more modern Canarian Spanish was absorbed into the Cuban Spanish until the two languages almost fused together.
Tumblr media
Francisco de Miranda in Avenida Paulista
Venezuela was the second biggest migration destination, where many respected politicians and presidents were descendants of the Guanches.
Francisco de Miranda was a Venezuelan military leader and revolutionary.
He epitomised the international importance of the American revolution, yet few Americans would recognize his name.
He fought the British in the Caribbean and Florida during the war, and in this way helped the US to win the revolution.
His father was:Sebastian de Miranda Ravelo, a Canarian immigrant.
He began the Spanish American wars of independence, and paved the way for another great man with Guanche blood as well, the liberator Simón de Bolívar, who liberated or assisted in the liberation of four territories, from the Castilians; New Granada (1819), Venezuela (1821), Quito (1822), and Peru (1824) as well as establishing-Bolivia (comes from Bolívar).
Tumblr media
Simón Bolívar
The Canary influence in the US
Some of the isleños immigrated to the US, where the city of “San Antonio” was founded by people from the Canary Islands.
When you remember Alamo, you should also take a second to remember the Canary Islands.
The city was originally founded by settlers from the Canary Islands and their descendants died fighting alongside Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett.
Even the founder of Sāo Paulo was from the Canary Island of Tenerife.
Both Texan and Mexican cuisine as well as Cuban, of course, trace their roots back to the Canary Islands, as the Guanches brought with them their cuisine in their desperate escape across the Ocean.
Like chilliest peppers and their “mojo” sauce that later became the key sauces and salsas in those cuisines.
In spite of their great successes in their new homes, life was not easy for the ileños.
The Europeans saw them as Spanish, the Spanish regarded them as hybrids, not Spanish not Latin Americans.
The Latin Americans perceived them as foreigners.
The fact that they didn’t fit in anywhere may have contributed to the Canarians becoming “trouble makers”and revolution leaders.
The few surviving Guanche surnames
The Canarians were scattered around the world, trying to survive the best they could.
Back in Spain it was a custom when a Guanche converted to Catholicism to take a Castilian name, that is why many of the Canarians have Castilian or Spanish names.
However, there are seven Guanche surnames * see end article. that have still survived, until now.
Six of them are authentic Guanche names, the seventh, Tenerife, was given to the Guanche slaves, as a last name referring to their island of origin,  when sold or brought along to assist the conquers in Latin America.
Today we find 50.000 people worldwide (Canary Islands excluded) carrying one of these seven Guanche names that somehow have survived over time.
Tumblr media
strelitzia reginae; flower of fire, or paradise bird
As the Canarian economy has improved drastically since  the 70s, especially thanks to the flourishing tourism industry, as many Europeans “survive” the cold, depressing winters thanks to the island's “eternal spring”.
The cultivation of fruits, vegetables and exotic flowers makes excellent export products to frozen Northern Europe.
Together they make up the lifeline for the islands and the reason many Canarian families return home after many, many years in exile.
Conclusion
Tumblr media
Beach at the Canary islands
The colonisation of the Canary Islands by the Castilian crown led to the gradual physical destruction of almost the entire indigenous society and the irreversible disappearance of the indigenous culture and history as a whole.
The Guanches were extinct, erased from history by a unforgiving, irresponsible conquest genocide, caused by an unstoppable hunger for riches.
We were left with unanswered questions, a whole in history and a blank page that can not be filled nor replaced.
The genocide of the Guanches remains an enormous and unacceptable moral stain on European colonial traditions.
The Canaries went from being conquested and plundered to become an autonomy.
Will the islands ever be free? Well, nothing in this life lasts forever, nothing is permanent, the future will be our witness, and their enemies are geography and time.
The Guanches no longer exist, however, they still have a presence on the islands, as subjects of speculation, an unsolved mystery and a source of discussion in our modern era.
The stories of the ones who disappeared but remained, remained somehow between us, and in our hearts,” the presence of the absent”.
The Guanches will be remembered through their legends, forever trapped in between volcanoes and legends.
It is our responsibility to keep their memory and their stories alive and help others remember them.
*The first Cuban writer born in the Canary Islands: José Martí Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda Silvestre de Balboa.
*The seven Canarian surnames that still survive; Baute, Bencomo, Chinea, Guanche, Oramas,Tacoronte and Tenerife.

National Banana Day
National Banana Day is centered in Ireland, where it was first celebrated in 2017. It is promoted by Fyffes, a fresh produce and fruit importing company, and has been acknowledged by other fruit companies such as Dole Food Company and Chiquita Brands International. It supports a national drive to encourage healthy eating, especially for children, and reminds shoppers to think of bananas as a nutritious and natural food that they can add to meals or eat as convenience food. It also highlights how the banana is fun and versatile.
The banana is the most popular fruit in the United States and around the world. The average person eats about 100 of them a year, which comes out to about 25 to 33 pounds worth. They are the cheapest fruit and are also one of the most perishable. They may appear to grow on trees, but they actually grow on plants that have 10 to 20 feet high trunks. The banana plant is an herb—the largest herb plant, actually—and bananas are its fruit. The plant grows in the tropics.
Each banana is about 100 calories and is high in fiber and potassium, which are good for treating high blood pressure, ulcers, calcium loss, and some cancers. Bananas are also a good source of manganese, vitamin B6, and vitamin C. There are over 1,000 varieties of bananas, but the kind most eaten in the United States is the Cavendish. The Gros Michel was once the most commonly eaten, but in the 1950s it fell victim to a fungus that causes Panama disease, so farmers had to switch to the Cavendish.
Bananas are the oldest cultivated fruit and likely were first domesticated in Southeast Asia. Centuries later, shortly after Europeans arrived in the Western Hemisphere, they were brought from the Canary Islands to Hispaniola. They then spread to other islands, before making it to the mainland. They didn't become widespread in the United States until the end of the nineteenth century. They were so popular in American cities in the early twentieth century that banana peels on the ground became a nuisance and an issue that had to be dealt with. This led to the gag of slipping on banana peels, which was frequently featured in early movies.
Bananas were popularized in part by the United Fruit Company, which was founded in the late nineteenth century, and is now known as Chiquita. They encouraged people to eat bananas with milk and corn flakes, and they put out banana recipe books until the end of the 1950s. The books oftentimes contained adventurous recipes and aimed to get people to eat bananas at every meal. They cast the banana not only as something sweet but also as something similar to a vegetable, like a potato. One example of a recipe from the book is ham banana rolls with cheese sauce.
Nowadays, bananas are still eaten in many different ways. Besides being enjoyed plain, they may be fried, may be included in sandwiches, and may be used in pies, puddings, muffins, bread, and cakes—among other things. Although they can be eaten in many ways, having them plain or in a healthy recipe is the preferred way to enjoy them on National Banana Day!
How to Observe National Banana Day
Celebrate the day by eating bananas! Eat them as a snack or as part of a meal. Eat them plain or use them to make something healthy!

The Canary Island Cuisine: Eat like the Canaries do…..
Tumblr media
It is a HUGE must, that you add the following to your itinerary when scheduling an excursion to the Canary Islands:
EAT as much as you can!!!
To be honest, that should be at the top of your To-Do list if you’re travelling anywhere! But in the Canaries, you probably shouldn’t leave without trying out their cuisine.
Apart from the warm sunny beaches, the highlight is the food in the Canaries. Warning: it’s extremely possible that I might say that about any destination 😉
These dishes caught my eye and my cravings – well mostly because I couldn’t resist and because it was something new & unusual.
In no particular order, here are the best dishes you need to try in the Canary Islands
Papas Arrugadas Con Mojo
Tumblr media
You say potatoes, they say ‘papas’… These potatoes are nothing like the ones we eat at home. The volcanic earth and climate in which they are grown produce smaller potatoes with a distinct taste & texture and taste. Known as “Wrinkled potatoes”, boiled with the skin in saltwater until soft, leaving the potatoes with wrinkles and with a salty crust, dressed with a generous topping of mojo picón – a delicious spicy sauce made with garlic, olive oil, red or green pepper, cumin, salt, and vinegar, also often served on its own as a snack, washed down with a tall glass of wine.
Ropa Vieja
Tumblr media
The words ropa vieja, literally means “old clothes” in Spanish, but don’t worry no old clothes were added to this dish! It’s made of shredded beef, chicken or pork and vegetables that resemble a heap of colourful rags, its name comes from the fact that it’s traditionally made with leftovers & is one of Canaria’s most popular and dearly loved dishes.
Rancho Canario
Tumblr media
Having the munchies? Then dip your spoon into a bowl of one of the signature dishes, a hearty soup. It’s a tastefully thickened noodle soup made with chicken, pork and chickpeas, with a selection of vegetables – and not forgetting papas, obviously! I must say, it sure does hit the spot.
Pollo al Salmorejo and Conejo al Salmorejo
Tumblr media
The Canarians just adore this dish, light yet robust special. Pollo al salmorejo is a delightful garlicky marinated chicken dish, cooked in white wine and seasoned with cumin, oregano, paprika, and thyme. Conejo al salmorejo follows the same recipe but with rabbit meat.
Gofio
Tumblr media
This is a superfood and it’s not for the skittish but it’s a dish that echoes the history of the Canary Islands and its people. Gofio is a flour made from roasted grains of wheat, maize whose uses are endless and weird. It’s used to make many foods from dumplings for soups and sometimes ice cream. It’s not the easily palatable but the for the Canarians, its a meal packed with healthy vitamins and minerals.
Padrón Peppers
Tumblr media
Padrón peppers, these small green peppers are named after the town of Padron on mainland Spain, but they’re often served as a starter or as a tapas dish in Tenerife. The little bad boys are fried whole in olive oil and a sprinkling of sea salt is added. Pick them up by the stems to eat. The peppers are very different in flavour, some piquant and some sweet, and you will not know which you’ve got until you bite into them.
Wine
Tumblr media
The perfect way to wash down all that spice is with a delightful glass of wine. Canary Island winemakers have extremely old vines grown on the volcanic soil which is perfect for creating outstanding flavourful wines. They produce both red and white wine, but their sweet and semisweet white wines are known for light, aromatic notes and are perfect for keeping cool under the Canary Island sun.
Bienmesabe
Tumblr media
Made on Gran Canaria, which is famous for its almond trees, Bienmesabe is a sweet, soft puree made with ground almonds, egg yolk, sugar, lemon zest, and cinnamon. It is usually served with ice cream or cream. I mean, what’s not to love about a dessert whose name literally translates as “tastes good to me”?
