Interests & Hobbies - Update post

Hey everyone!

First things first, sorry for the wall of text!

I know quite a few of you have been wondering about this project, if not been REALLY patiently been waiting for it! That's why I figured I'd make this post.

A bit of backstory:

I have, in all honestly, been working on it for 2 years. Except, that because the mod has SO MANY features, I kept making tiny mods that then get shelved because I wanted to get back to the interests & hobbies mod. But obviously that's part of the mod and... argh! :p You can see how I got stuck in this creative loop. And I would then be happy to just quickly make something like a bus manager, or a RPG manager or a thirsty sims mod or randomly deciding to create a sims website (as you casually do clearly lol). Because that was a bit of an escape for me. Though, this morning, I was talking to someone about this and the mod's progression. How I was just completely thrown out of the creative process and that I just didn't know what I wanted to do...

Basically, out of that conversation the following question came, which was:

So, what have you finished already, then? Given that you've been working on it for so long?

So far, I've done:

Assignment of a hobby lot. Sims of that interest will also visit that lot.

Sims will pursue their hobbies inside their house/garden/lot. (i.e a sim with a gardening skill, will garden their garden.)

Your sims can have an interest and a hobby (duh).

The environment hobby currently has a working hobby challenges.

Getting interested in a field can be done through the phone or computer. (or starting on certain items of that hobby).

Your sim can get magazines of that interest/hobby. This will increase their interest each time they read it.

Learn which interest that sims knows of the other sims. Just like with traits. ;)

A way to make it so that custom content items are considered hobby items as you place them down. And therefore give your sims interest points too.

Certain conversation topics can now be considered interest related conversations.

Which... I know doesn't sound like much, but the *amount* of technical background stuff is absolutely insane :p And that took me more time debugging and error fixing than I've ever done with any of my mods!

So with that said. I want, not only apologise for taking so bloody long to get this mod out of the door, but also share what's going to happen next.

So what now?

As you can probably tell, the basics are (almost) done, as well as the basic mechanics. So, what I think I want to do is the following:

Release the mod this year, with the current features I just shared that are done, and all the other features that were in the document, I'll work on separately. I guess, they function as DLCs for the mod? Or expansions, I guess? :p

That way, I feel less stressed, and you get to give it a try! :) In the end I keep forgetting I'm only one person, and I can finally sleep at night lol

I'm very musical; I can sing, I can play a few instruments, and I'm always listening to punk & alt music. Favorite band is Rise Against. I also really enjoy Fall Out Boy, the Offspring, Nirvana, Paramore, Silversun Pickups, Jimmy Eat World, Mother Feather, Veruca Salt... plus a lot of Jewish music like Pharaoh's Daughter and Nefesh Mountain

I'm from Chicago and I'm very passionate about my hometown. I'm sad I don't live there now.

I loooooooooove computer games. I play them waaaaay too much.

I'm a writer! Been writing fanfiction and original fiction since... I was 10? That sounds right

I love marine biology! I'm a sucker for cetaceans. Orcas are so beautiful and Vaquitas make me sob like a baby.

Ecology & the Biosphere in general are fascinating to me. I love learning about how life and the planet come together to make the interesting world we live on.

I also love history! Certain periods I find boring but history in general is very fascinating just as prehistory is.

I enjoy books and I have way too many of them. I'm just always reading *something*.

I'm an anarchocommunist and I do have a strong interest in politics and political activism. I blame my communist parents, I never had a chance. I knew who Fred Hampton was before I knew how to do multiplication.

I also just love learning about queer theory and queer history beyond that. I'm intersex, nonbinary, demiromantic, and pansexual. So queer stuff is a big part of my life. Also, disability activism, because I'm hella neurodivergent and I have mobility issues.

I am passionate about my friends and my chosen family (and my mom). I have some really great people in my life - my spouse (whom I have been with for 10 years), my best friend forever (whom i have been friends with since high school), and so many other wonderful friends both "in real life" and on the internet. I also have five parrots, which unfortunately do not count as a separate interest lol

I enjoy a lot of comedy shows because they help me forget my ~traaaaauma~ while I watch. So Parks & Rec (I have been called the Leslie Knope of Paleontology by multiple separate individuals), The Good Place, Abbott Elementary, Community, etc.

I like to bake! I'm pretty good at it. I also enjoy cooking some food, but I'm a really picky eater so it's limited.

Photography sounds interesting! Maybe you should ask the editor to get you a camera so you can try it out

I mean, sure, but I could always just... use my own vision? I am a machine, after all, and basic functions a phone would have are within me already. Still, I suppose the actual act of holding the camera and taking the picture is part of the appeal. I'll ask but the Editor isn't made of money; hell, I'm surprised they're even paid working for Fazbear! If you guys are so interested, I'll send you some pictures of things I find interesting.

I really like cars, I really like trucks. I like them all so much but I don't give a fuck about knowing the details of them. Like, don't ask me what kind of engine a Lotus Exige has. Don't ask me how much a Toyota Tacoma can pull. I don't know, and I don't care at all to know. All I know is that I like how they sound, and I like how they look. The world needs to be more inclusive to people who have long term interests but don't spend all their brainpower memorizing every little detail of every little thing involved in that interest. My memory is so shit that I barely even remember my goddamn birthday, I ain't gon remember the max speed of a Testarossa.

As many of my family and friends know one of my hobbies through the years has been photography. Since getting a Canon Rebel T8i in 2020, I am able to combine my love of photography with my other hobby which is astronomy. This is called astrophotography. The photo with this post was taken on June 25, 2023. I attached my camera to my telescope. The moon is in the Waning Crescent Phase. I find this type of phase very interesting because you can see shadows in the hundreds of craters on the Moon.

I have always been interested in photography and cameras, and now that I have bought my first ever Polaroid camera that it has opened a whole new can of worms for me.

It excites me that I can now really dive into my hobbies and interests like I have. I do want to buy more cameras and really play into my creative side with photography

You're looking at it, as pathetic as that sounds. Hell, this is barely a hobby- Whatever.

I haven't thought about it much. My predecesors before me had... questionable interests. The original collected burnt out optics and the back-up version of myself collected rocks... that were at the scene of murders. I don't care to collect anything but if I HAD an interest?

Probably something fuckin' normal. Like pictures or something? Photography at least sounds useful.

I need to work on adapting away from my cringe-instinct as well as giving myself permission to rest, as much as I can manage to do so.

For me they both tend to come from the same source, I think. It's the old "productivity bug." The trained feeling that keeps warning me I'm not trying hard enough, I'm not meeting somebody else's perfect standard. It's very hard to jettison that mix of guilt and drive. But at the same time--

If I can't give myself permission to rest, I ignore my needs and boundaries until I wind up blowing up or melting down, or otherwise having some essential moving part of my brain get damaged on at least a temporary basis.

And if I listen to the bit of me that cringes and give it credibility instead of navigating away, if I let myself worry about how pitiful or inane I'm looking to a hypothetical Other, or fear that my passion is for the Wrong Sort of thing, something inadequately Meaningful and Lasting and Productive, then even when I am "on" and have actual *energy* to spend I'll be cutting myself off from my ability to spend it with joy.

Playfulness, whimsy, passion-projects and appreciation and analysis dedicated to "little things" or "frivolous things" or "age-innapropriate things" -- where would I *be* without them? Do I really want to wipe the world of color? Turn my own mindscape into a horrid minimalist white and grey modernist apartment to please some hypothetical Life Real-Estate agent who can't read my mind anyway, instead of filling it with all the delightful personalized furniture and local art and re-wilded butterfly-friendly garden patch that could make it a decent home for my soul??
