I've posted before about how more of you should get into riot grrl punk so here's how I got into it. I literally just listened to playlists people made of riot grrl songs and then checked out artists that I liked

here's the ones I still listen to a lot (also some of these aren't technically riot grrl, since riot grrl specifically refers to the 90s bands and that era of punk)

♡ Floyd is.... well, Floyd. He's silly! I love him unconditionally <3 (no i dont thats a lie- ACK HELP HES CHOKING ME-) Joking, I LOVE drawing him having threatening and scary faces. (that goes for Jade as well)

♡ Idia is either a whimpering begging mess or hes a fucking cocky menace whos actually threatening

♡ Leona is soft shy lion or a badass (yasss slay queen, we stan you‼️) and sassy at the same time (Have you seen the way he stans with his hand on his hip?)

♡ Vil is just strait up serving cunt, no words needed (she is always SERVING from the university of servington with a degree in serving cunt) I always draw him winning because she always is (we stay winning💯)

♡ Rook is an unhinged stalker with a crazy obsession or he's just a silly little lad whos always supportive of others (I like drawing him threatening too)

♡ Epel is my pretty boy who I love to draw because he's so pretty. I like to draw him very wild though and rambunctious

♡ Rollo is literally the same as Idias except he tries to hold his pride feeling really embarrassed

♡ Riddle has a strong presence and personality which i like to convey, being ruthless yet being incredibly soft. I like drawing him cute and pretty sometimes too :3

♡ TREY HAS NICE MF ARMS YOU KNOW DAMN WELL IM DRAWING HIM SCRUMDELIOUCIOUS

♡ Cater makes me sad, so I indulge myself in it. I like drawing him around deep and depressing themes, sometimes dark as well.

♡ Ruggie is either street punk cool and swaggy or damn attractive with an unhinged and sneaky overlay

♡ Jack is so cute to me, I like drawing him as the tsundere he is with a playful side to him with the overprotective bodyguard vibes

♡ Ace... I HATE THAT STUPID MF!!! God he's so annoying we might as well date already >:( He's super playful and flirty and i like drawing him sly and sometimes awkwardly flustered

♡ Deuce is my baby boy crush >\\\\< Hes so precious literally he's my soft boy. I love him sm omg

♡ Malleus is so awkward and somewhat stoic, yet thats what makes him cute! He's like a himbo to me hahahaha hes so silly to me sometimes but then im like, oh wait, hes hot. And then i do a 360 and all of a sudden he's this hot smirking bastard

♡ Lilia is so drippy he's my little doll, I want to style him in so many different ways (●ˇ∀ˇ●) and he's so badass yet girlypop at the same time, hello?? No one can pull it off like Lilia does, its the bisexual in him 🤞

♡ Silver is so sweet and pretty, though I always draw him sleeping because its so easy just drawing someone sleeping in low quality T0T (sorry Silver stans)

♡ Sebek is a silly little guy who I want to kick for the fun of it sometimes ^-^ But I like drawing him getting teased a lot or often getting picked on because I find it funny

♡ Jamil being a sassy overworked mom who always too tired to show any type of expression other than showing anger, exasperation, or an anxious stressed out look. Other than that, its a tired deadpan face for me as he's holding a mug saying "kys." Jamil is like a little hater to me and I stan that <3

♡ Kalim being oblivious and a bit slow, but other than that hes the happy radiating sunshine we all know as. I like giving him moments where hes so genuine and kind where you're just completely soft around him and an arrow shoots through your heart

♡ Ortho is that friendly neighbor! I like him drawing him being supportive of others and always being Idia's right hand man who can also be sneaky and sly

General housekeeping before I proceed with the Roast Fest

I want to make this explicitly clear: it is not my intention to hate on the artists themselves nor their art skills or anything along those lines.

Betsy Cola and Davi Go are both extremely talented and skilled artists. Support their work. Art is fucking hard and its even harder to actually get paid for it.

Betsy Cola is a queer Filipina and has an Instagram Page (but no online shop for prints). Lots of fun retro style (think 50s-60s-70s Pop Art)

Davi Go does have an INPRNT with lots of Marvel and DC Characters. Like nine different Emma Frost prints alone. A couple of lovely Laura Kinney and much more. For fine Art Prints, artists earn like 50% of the sale, I'm pretty sure.

I personally have no idea what goes into getting contracted to do any cover by Marvel, but I'm sure it was absolutely thrilling to get to do ANY work by a big company such as Marvel, where so many would get to see something I had made. I also have no idea how much an artist is told when they are contracted to make something. (Do they get told what it's for, or are they just given a generalized prompt? I truly have no idea)

I do know, that personally for me, doing ANYTHING of that caliber would be a dream come true. I've been reading comic books since I was five/six years old. While I only make shitty little fans arts and the occasional fanfic, if by some astronomical chance, I was offered to write or do a cover, I would absolutely jump on the chance. Or at least strongly consider it.

I am specifically critiquing Marvel's decisions as corporation to even come up with and sign off on something as obnoxious (and frankly, insulting) as "Pride Allies" for a variant series. Especially considering the overarching fact that historically Marvel has had its fair share of issues regarding its treatment of its queer characters -- lack of consistent appearances/storytelling, questionable treatment/writing choices, and blatant rainbow washing during Pride month to give a few generalizations (pick your favorite example, there's a lot). Sometimes its enjoyable to poke fun at company's ridiculous marketing ideas.

Much like the fact last winter they did a "Ski Chalet" variant series with skiing and snow activities, yet somehow didn't find an artist to do a variant of their ONE CANON OLYMPIC SKIIER.

But I digress.

In Summary: the act of creation is beautiful, don't be a douche canoe. Being punk is anti-establishment, not anti-people.

Hell yeah, down with the monarchy.

She already knows that to be nobility is to be evil. That's like step one. Step two for her is just getting rid of the idea that she has to remain the nobility, or at the very least identify as it. Mind you, this is Eridan. Of all the trolls, she's very strangely the most, and I mean this genuinely, working class coded. Her natural state of speaking, without her doubled vs and ws, remains improper and vulgar. She has a schedule, and works for her living. Her room is full of her work equipment. It might also be full of her wealth but presumably she did technically earn it through her own labor (which is most likely murder but still). Unlike other trolls who seem to do their things as hobbies or training, for her, orphaning is a job. She straight up calls it a hassle. This girl fuckin hates her 9-5 and actively daydreams about not coming into work tomorrow and the whole world crumbling because of it. But then she still goes into work the day after. This of course makes Eridan the syndicalist ideal, of a vital industry perfectly organized (by being one person), with functionally infinite striking power (everybody would die).

Like, that is the thing that makes Eridan so fun to love as a socialist woke. She is basically the Objectivist and Communist ideals, simultaneously. She is in the position of the titular, allegorical Atlas from Atlas Shrugged, a book by a moron person for moron people. But, whereas Rand's book is stupid, because it attempts to attribute the ability to strike to the capitalist, industrialist class, and pass this off as a representation of reality through its allegory, Homestuck, and the Alternian system it presents isn't, because it actually shows the absurdity of such a contrivance and the unimaginable cruelty it would take to keep it in place if it were real. Sighhhh, I just wish Eridan could've actually brought up her orphaning as labor, and starving Gl'bgolyb as a strike action. Oh how I love you Eridan-as-a-symbol-for-the-indomitable-power-of-the-striking-worker~

This is way more woke than you may have bargained for but I'm on a roll. Heck, screw "democratically elected leader" as a sburb class, it's a mouthful. Instead, I want full on anti-establishment Punk of Hope Eridan. It'd be a cute little inversion of her initial perception of what the prince class is, of having jurisdiction over ones aspect, to represent a more developed, anarchistic view that nobody can control your aspect. Eridan as a punk also works well with her as an iconoclast, and in opposition to Feferi's more problematic traits.

And I want to tack this on: All roads lead back to Erikan for me, because I also just love the idea of Eridan's potential character development being represented through fashion aesthetics, as Kanaya helps her express herself through clothing. There's plenty of aesthetics to choose from depending on the exact path of her development, too. The more hectic the route, the more cute outfit changes Kanaya can facilitate, because fashion/makeover montages are always good. Kanaya's first instinct might be to go princesscore for her, but she could reject it. Perhaps she doesn't fully abandon her hipster coffeehouse roots at first and goes a little beatnik. Or, she starts off her fashion journey still with a consumerist instinct that guides her to a more mod look. Or, she embraces the way that she worked for Feferi which leads her to a more working class look as a skinhead (and I mean actual skinheads, not nazi poseurs who can fuck off). Chelsea cut Eridan save me.. Save me Chelsea cut Eridan. And of course, to represent her as an ultra abrasive iconoclast, just go straight up punk.

The first two days of my “injury” was spent drunk in my apartment. I drank everything I had. I woke up on the third day to a ringing phone. Fuck does my head hurt. I reached for my phone and answered. “What?” 

“Morning to you too, punk.” Its Linus. Fuck me.  

“Morning,” I grumble.  

“Just checking on you,” he replies.  

“It's early, man. Couldn’t it have been check later?”  

Linus sighs and I know he’s shaking his head. “It is later, Jeremy. It’s noon in Vegas. Which means its three PM in Boston.”  

I pull my phone away from my head and check. Yep, it sure is three. I put my phone back to my ear. “So, it is.”  

“Just tell me you aren’t drinking and driving.” I can hear the genuine concern in his voice.  

“I promise, I’m not. I’ve been drinking by myself at home.” I get up gingerly and head to the kitchen for coffee. That’s when I notice all the bottles on the counter. “Shit.”  

“What?” 

Whoops, I didn’t mean to say that out loud. “Sorry, I’m just out of coffee. I’m gonna head to the coffee shop.”  

“Ok, if you want to talk, just let me know.” Now he sounds sad. A sad Linus is depressing AF and I don’t want that. I never want that.  

“Thanks bud. I’m ok right now. I promise, I’m being safe.”  

“Try to get a workout in,” he says. “I’ll talk to you later.”  

“Later.” I hung up and banged my head against the wall.  Ow. I really do need coffee, but the kitchen is a mess.  A mess I need to clean up after coffee. I shower and dress and head down the block to The Addicted. I love the name of the place.  It's quiet since the morning rush is over.  I order and sit in the back. With my hat and sunglasses, I don’t get recognized much. I’m checking out my calendar on my phone when the door chimes. I look up to see Stella Williams walking in, phone to her head.  

“I am in public, so I am not discussing this again... You want to sleep around, go right ahead but it won’t be with me any longer.”  She hung up with a sigh and ordered her coffee with an apology.  

I’ve never really looked at Stella. My eyes were on Leia but now... now I see what I had been missing.  While Leia was short and beautiful, Stella is not tall, maybe five-six, but she is gorgeous. She’s a light brown brunette with pale blue eyes, a compliment to her best friend’s espresso hair and green eyes. Her olive skin is flawless with a few freckles around her nose. As a trainer, I knew she was fit but in the yoga pants and hoodie she is wearing, I can tell she is a smoke show.  

I try not to stare as she picks up her coffee and heads out. I watch as she walks away and wonder what her call was about. I thought about asking her to sit and talk, but I can’t at the moment.  I need to get back home and clean up.  

I decided to go out instead of drinking by myself. I also know that Mark has Andy and Linus on speed dial if I were to show up without them. Fuckers can’t even trust me on my own.  So, I headed out to the south side of Boston. I went to a dive bar and ordered a whiskey. I look around. Its dark and dingy. I don’t expect to run into anyone here. Except for the brunette sitting at the end of the bar.  

Stella.  

I debated if I should go over there. She is obviously going through something if she missed the team road trip. She always flies with Leia but since Leia stopped flying a couple of months ago, she’s mostly kept to herself or with Andy and Luke.  She was the only female on the training staff, so I had to guess that had a lot to do with it.  

Ah fuck it.  I threw back my drink, ordered another and sat one stool away from her. “Hey Stella.”  

Her head snapped up and I got the full picture. Red eyes, blotchy skin, bottom lip bitten and swollen. “What are you doing here?” 

“Stella, what’s going on?” Concern flooded my entire system. I’ve never seen her cry. Angry, yes but not this... broken. I watched as another tear rolled down her cheek. “Stella?” 

“I thought you were injured,” she replied, wiping the tears from her face.  

I looked away. “Not physically injured.” I took a sip and looked back at her. “Why aren’t you on the trip?” 

She signaled the bartender, and he poured another shot of tequila for her.  She threw it back and made a face before she answered me. “Well, when your co-worker decides to sleep with your boyfriend and you can’t do anything about getting rid of her from your workplace, you take a vacation right when they need you the most.” She gave a sad smile.   

“Holy fuck.” I didn’t mean for that to come out. “That is a cluster, Stel.”  

“Tell me about it.” She looked at me. “Wait, never mind. You’ve already fucked up with the best person in your life.”  

I flinched. Ouch. Her statement is hit perfectly. But she isn’t wrong. Leia was the best person but not for me. I snort. “She had been Andy’s girl from the beginning, and it took them a stupid amount of time to realize it. I just took it badly.” I shake my head. “I regret a lot of things.” 

Stella looked at me with big eyes. “You actually regret...” 

I cut her off. “Yes, I do.” I threw back the rest of my drink. “She didn’t deserve my attitude and actions. Fuck, I didn’t know she was having a difficult pregnancy, and it kills me that I made it worse. She’s a sweet girl and she deserves the world and I hope that Barber gives it to her.”  

We're quiet for a few minutes. “Why were you pulled from the trip?” The question comes from left field. “I mean, if you were injured, I would know about it.”  

It’s my turn to take a moment before answering her. “I was drunk when I showed up to practice.”  

She gasped. “Jeremy, why would you do that?” 

“I didn’t do it on purpose. I just... I miss my teammates and they all ignored me because of the thing with Leia and it just got to me.  So I went to a bar and met a girl but then I went back to my place, alone, and kept drinking. Linus woke me up and then I was late, but I still had booze breath.” I sigh. “Coach pulled me off of the trip and I’ve been drinking ever since. I didn’t go to the Red Line because Mark would rat my ass out.”  

Stella was quiet for a few minutes.  I ordered us another round. “Have you tried talking to her?” I shake my head. “Why not?” 

“Do you actually think that Andy would be ok with me talking to her? Especially, now with her pregnancy? If I thought I could have a moment with her to just say sorry, I would. I know she won’t forgive me, but I have to apologize.”  

Another silence.  

“You’re not a bad guy, Swayman.  Maybe a man whore but not a bad guy.”  

I husk a laugh. “Thanks, I think.”  

She stares at me for a second. “Would you do it? Be committed to someone?” 

I think about it. “If I found the right girl, I would do everything I could to make sure I never made her cry.” I look at her when another tear escapes. “You want me to kick his ass?” 

She laughed. “No, but thanks. I just want to forget him.”

Sonic character music HCs

 I’ve been obsessed with both the Sonic the hedgehog series and Music in general for over a year now, so i figured i could combine those interests in a fun way. I’m gonna describe what kind of music i personally think the characters would like/listen to. And just so you know, this is just my thoughts on it, i’m not saying im right or anything. And while i am trying to match these genuinely, it’s also not something i’m taking fully seriously. I’m just doin this for fun :)

I also suggest looking up some of the terms/artists/genres i use here if you’re not already familiar with them! Might help you understand my reasoning a bit more, and who knows, you might even find a new favourite artist 👀

Oh, and one more thing. While i am of course going to go off of music i’m familiar with, i’ll try to avoid assigning characters music that i like just because its music that i like. That being said, i will of course, be just a tad bit biased. Anyways, time to start with the blue boy himself!!

Sonic

Sonic is somewhat easy. Seeing as how his main thing is standing up against tyranny, i imagine he’d definitely be a fan of punk. At first i thought of pop punk specifically, due to its high energy, but i feel like Sonic would find it a bit too commercial. Same thing with skate punk. I feel like anarcho-punk could be a little more up his alley? Maybe something like chumbawumba.

Oh, and personal bias time: I think he would like King gizzard and the Lizard wizard due to the themes of enviromentalism.

Now, i’m completely split between two different paths here. The first option is EDM. Just overall music that sounds electronic, maybe dance, i dunno. The second option however, is one that i personally prefer: Just like, music with weirdass time signatures and polyrhythms n shit. Math rock, Prog, that kinda stuff. Specific bands i’m thinking about is Tool, King crimson, Black midi, maybe even KGLW (again, personal bias). Tails would think music theory is fucking dope and would be OBSESSED with this kinda music lmao.

Knuckles

Now, this is the rare instance that i feel justified in being biased, because his level themes in sa2 make me believe that knuckles is a hiphop head. Specifically, instrumental hip hop. I think he’d be a big fan of J Dilla’s style of hip hop production in general, with the soft fuzzy feel of songs like The light. Otherwise i feel like he likes some boom bap, like Illmatic.

I honestly feel like Amy is the kinda person who enjoys like, any type of music? Like this gal will listen to some chill folk music and then go directly to hardcore industrial rock lmao. I think her favourite genre is pop though. First artist that pops into mind is Carly rae jepsen, not only because she makes great pop music, but also since her songs are often about love, which i feel fits Amy pretty well. She’d probably like something more off-kilter like art pop too. She LOVES Björk, i feel confident in saying that.

I’ve noticed that this one is quite varied (and if you’re curious, i don’t really mind the whole taylor swift thing, but i also don’t really care for it either), but i want to bring up a genre that i haven’t seen anyone else suggest Shadow being a fan of: Shoegaze. I think he would find the whole noisy, dreamlike, nearly overwhelming feeling of shoegaze calming. I don’t know, there’s just something about Shoegaze that makes me feel like it fits shadow perfectly. Only bands i really know are Slowdive and My bloody valentine, but i still feel confident in my opinion.

I also feel like the idea of him enjoying indie folk (something like the mountain goats) but would not be caught DEAD listening to it is really funny. The day that rouge finds out will not be a happy day for anyone in a ten mile radius.

Now, there’s a very easy answer here. Jazz. But i feel like rouge would also enjoy stuff like Soul and funk. She’d also check out music Shadow listens to, both to annoy him and out of genuine interest. Not much else i have to say here tbh.

Similarly to Amy, i think Silver enjoys practically anything and everything, and is also super open to trying new stuff. If he has a preference though, i think he enjoys dance music? Or just electronic stuff in general. Daft punk comes to mind, specifically Discovery.

I feel like Blaze is someone who simply hasn’t been able to listen to a lot of music yet? Her friends (particularly Silver and Amy) have given her a bunch of recommendations, and while she doesn’t have a preference yet, she has enjoyed some of the stuff that they have played.

Vector

On the complete contrary to Blaze, Vector is a supreme Music nerd. You name an artist or album, he is at the very least aware of them. He’s the kinda guy who will talk about some super obscure folk album from the 70′s and refer to it as if its some kind of holy grail. It’s great. He would have a vinyl collection, but due to the chaotix’s financial situation, he settles for CDs instead. Again, he enjoys practically anything, but i feel like his favourite genre is progrock. He also remixes music for fun.

so dreamling is my ultimate sandman ship, BUT. two other ones I love are:

dream/hob/corinthian aka hobrintheus. everyone go read @softest-punk’s fic self-abandon, and the confounding effects thereof !! hob humanizing the corinthian (calling him cori), the corinthian being so genuinely in love with hob, dream being being so very dream about the situation… pure excellence. I have a handful of other fics I can rec for this ship, too!!

dream/hob/daniel. this is 10000000% @moorishflower’s fault because their Beautiful, Strange and New series is fucking unparalleled  (tbh everything they write is like a drug to me). the main fic was so incredibly fun to read while it was a wip!!! especially when the story gets to that part (ifkyk).

okay this question is so hard to answer because I’ve only got back into any fandom in 2022 (long and kinda sad story) and I haven’t quite gotten up the gumption to talk to many people outside of commenting on fics. so!! I’m just gonna shoutout some more fics I love from the people I talked about in the other answer!

here’s a few more @softest-punk fics that I recommend, especially if you like alternate universes, a hopelessly-in-love hob, and support the Trans Agenda:

Catching Up - human/no powers au with alternating pov. all that post-fishbowl trauma goodness with an incredibly sweet hob who just wants to take care of his dear friend (who he is also hopelessly in love with but that's nbd)

Falling - another human/no powers au! strangers to friends to lovers story with extremely hot sex. i'm remembering how much I love this one and I'm about to go reread it!!

Half sleep, half waking- this is one of their most recents fics and it's a rivers of london crossover!! 1989 fishbowl rescue au (alternating hob and nightingale pov) where hob enlists the help of his friend (and ex-lover) dci nightingale to figure out why his oldest friend (who he is hopelessly in love with) missed their centennial meeting. I love hob's whole "thing" in this one–I have a personal head canon that he would absolutely have all kinds of rizz with the potentially less than human and/or immortal components of the world.

here's some more @moorishflower fics I recommend, especially if you like alternate universes, delicious angst, and extremely well thought out world-building! I don't know the best way to word this (fiction writing isn't my strong suit), but the way that this author describes things makes me go insane. they know exactly how to describe how things taste/smell/feel and it just completely transports me into the story.

iron, glass, bones, blood - monster4monster, love but the kind of love where you want to pin them to a board like a butterfly and find out what their blood looks like under a microscope, kink as a way to reclaim trauma... I literally cannot tell you how many times I've read this fic. it feels like it was pulled from the very depths of my subconscious.

On sexual dimorphism in C. urophasianus - (if you know me irl, no you don't) very lighthearted, non-traditional a/b/o, omegas are very empowered. they've only been together one week and it's still very new between them and now dream has to "court" hob because of his instincts going all crazy. very, very sweet!!

My few posts have given me a reputation as a Madoka hater (and, fair enough, because I certainly don't blame anyone who is. Please hate Madoka all you like). The truth is I really do like the original show quite a bit, but YEAH.

YEAH.

I think the thing that gets most exhausting for me, over and over, is bringing up these criticisms and being told, "No! Because Madoka fixed all that!" and even ignoring Rebellion (which I am inclined to do anyway), the girls still die.

They die.

The happy ending is a montage of girls dying. Which is a happy ending only because what they were getting before (specifically as a consequence of choosing to be a magical girl) was a fate worse than death.

And it's worth noting how the incubators are portrayed. They aren't portrayed as malicious. They aren't "evil" in that sense. What they are is practical and indifferent. They are taking advantage of inherent factors in the universe, not creating those factors.

Which means that there's something about PMMM that is saying, this is reality. At least in this fiction, this is the reality of femininity. And it is inherent to femininity! Kyubey even explains - it's weird! But only teen girls are like this! That's why we use them!

I think it's fair to be like, hey, that's fucked up. What kind of gender essentialist fatalism? Bro?

And it's also just denial to pretend it isn't about fanservice or a male audience.

As anyone who's been on my blog recently will know, I'm kinda super into Love Live! right now. It's cute. It scratches an itch.

And there's a lot of plausible deniability built into it, and a lot of pushback from English speaking fandom about it, but, uh, Love Live! is an idol game but it's also a waifu collector.

It's also a catalogue of nonthreateningly sexual anime teenage girls specifically designed to appeal first and foremost to lonely awkward Japanese young working men with disposable income.

And, idk, knowing that doesn't impede my ability to find it cute and wholesome and fun and escapist. The fact that it is that does lead to some of creative decisions that make the series less fun for me (it's not very diverse, for example. The yuri elements are subtext for another. And I either wish the girls were less sexualized or older, personally). But I'm not going to deny what it is.

I'm not even particularly interested in shaming the men its aimed at for liking it, or shaming the creators for making it that way per se (well, okay, sometimes I am interested in shaming the creators a lil bit). But I do think most the things about it that read as feminist to me as an American read that way because I am so far outside the original intended subculture. And I think the same is true about Madoka. You can absolutely read feminist messages in it. I certainly do. But placing these works in their original contexts tells a very different much more... regressive? picture. They were not made for women and girls. They are not made to uplift women and girls. They CAN! And they DO! Both in Japan and elsewhere! But that's anywhere from (at best) a secondary market to (at worst) a complete accident.

It's hard for some people to wrap their heads around because in America at least I think the idea of a "cute" (even if that's subverted in Madoka) media starring a large cast of only girls being for men is pretty alien to how we do stories and marketing. Here we understand playboy magazines and swimsuit editions, but we don't understand men collecting merch of a cute fictional girl they like. It would be seen as emasculating.

We understand the reverse. We get that boy bands and anime like Free! can be aimed squarely at women while being comprised entirely of men or male characters. Which is part of why I'm not shaming the male audiences, because... desiring anime tiddy isn't inherently predatory anymore than a lady desiring anime ass. And that's a crass way of putting it anyway. We don't frame hanging a boy band poster up that way, or playing a game like Mystic Messenger. It becomes more complicated because we live in a complicated patriarchal structure that protects and empowers men and women differently and unequally, but that seems like a poor reason to try to tell individual men they aren't allowed to enjoy things in a way that is obviously natural and parallels how... most humans like to enjoy some things sometimes.

But that also doesn't mean we can't look at those broad cultural patterns and... make observations. And have criticisms. And talk about how it affects people, and the back and forth between media and culture.

But, Madoka is for men first. The girls' suffering is a form of male gaze, and pretty unambiguously a kind of very very softcore torture porn for male gamer types. That's not a judgment against it, that's just its literal intended share of the market. It's a pretty easy read if you understand the context in which it was released and the culture it is coming from and catering to. My Little Pony is a little girls toy franchise. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sells toys to boys. Home & Gardens is for housewives. Top Gear is for car dads. These are true even if other people like them. When an adult fan of children's cartoons (I say, as an adult fan of children's cartoons) tries to say, "But it's not really a kids cartoon!" I feel about the same way I do when a feminist fan of some clearly male-centric media says, "But it's not really!"

And that's - own your shit. Own it. It's fine. It's fine to like it. It's fine to love it. It's fine if it means the world to you. It doesn't mean there's something wrong with you if you like a media that maybe isn't the most mature or progressive masterpiece out there. Just don't pretend there's no validity in obvious criticism. I love some real garbage made by real garbage people. I have survived.

Madoka exists in a fictional universe where the laws of that fictional universe are that 1) girls are uniquely emotional, 2) that emotion and their own aspirations can easily be harnessed against them in such a way that in the best possible universe all it does it kill them. In the normal universe it turns them into evil witches. That's just true. That's the world. I'm allowed to look at that, especially in conversation with magical girl media that came before, and go, "you know what? in that context, that's pretty fucked up" and it doesn't even mean that I stop liking the show, so I don't see why everyone else has to get so defensive about it.

(Y'all have no idea. Those posts are old now, but I got so many asks. I had to block so many people. I'm not trying to take your precious anime away calm down.)

Idk if I completely agree with the tone of my original posts - there's a little bit of offhanded vilifying of "men" as a shorthand for... all the bullshit... and I no longer love that language. I love men. Men are people. Some men can be shitty, but shitty individual men and patriarchy aren't the same. But I do still agree with all my broad points.

Plus, yes, also. The thing of a new (often male) fanbase getting into something you've been into for a long time with some new entry and acting like it both invented and fixed everything about the genre (PMMM and magical girls, Friendship is Magic and girl cartoons, Stardew Valley and farming sims) is frustrating, and to hear many an incurious nerd tell it, magical girls were floundering before Madoka! And I hate that.

Anyway, oops, I went on a little rant. That still makes it look like I don't like Madoka. I actually really do like the original series. I have rewatched it multiple times and probably will again. I even tried to play Magia Record (briefly - I couldn't really get into it). I can't speak to the many many spinoff media - but those have so many different writers and so much different lore that I think it'd probably be hard to try to pin any kind of single ethos to the franchise as a whole any more. But while I couldn't get into Magia Record I'd bet there's a short manga story or something that I'd love at this point. When you make like 200 magical girls or whatever that's bound to happen.

Thanks for the ask. Sorry Madoka fans are still so hyper defensive apparently. I hope you are able to survive them and find some better magical girl series out there. <3

Happy STS! What is the best novel you've ever read? What did you like about it, from a storytelling perspective? Has it influenced or informed your own approach?

in the name of. having an answer. i will pick The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. i don't remember it well enough after so long after having read it (and i've only read it the once) to pick out specific storytelling mechanics, but i do remember being impressed and thinking it was very well done in addition to having a lot of important things to say and being engaging and entertaining. i also remember i had borrowed it, and then texted the friend i'd borrowed it from to ask if he had the next book and if i could come pick it up right then. at 3AM.

one particular thing about the TGWTDT original trilogy (the only ones i personally count as "canon" lol) that really stuck out to me as unique and special to me personally and that i've wanted to see more of since - and am planning to be the change i want to see wrt - are its quote unquote "unlikeable" protagonists.

lisbeth is autistic and point blank refuses to mask, and in addition she's acerbic and angry and tends to reach violence as a much sooner resort than many, she's not exactly arrogant but she would never even dream of not taking credit and representing her skills accurately or god forbid using upspeak, she simply does not follow rules (or conventions or etiquette) she thinks are stupid and she's vocal and unapologetic about it, she's an actual genuine punk and fucks severely and without romance (until mikael), and as far as i remember she never once says sorry to anyone for anything no matter what. i love her with every fiber of my being.

mikael is a workaholic which is not unique, except that everyone hates his guts for being so single-minded and rigid and unavailable, which is, and which i really liked. of course people would not find him fun to be around. he also is arrogant, and a hypocrite, and can be unkind. and these two are the best good guys we've got! (this is also why i discount the opinion of anyone who claims mikael is a "romanticized" self-insert on larsson's part like bruhhh.... just cuz they have the same job? this bitch is not a romanticized version of anyone or anything he's a fucking rat bastard who happens to also be a good man smdh. i mean maybe he is a self-insert but not a fucking romanticized one! he sucks! i'm passionate about this.)

i also really liked the age range of the characters and the polyamory and the queers. additionally, larsson has a really unique and fascinating writing style (which critics have attributed to his writing career starting in investigative journalism before he ever did creative writing or fiction). i think it fits absolutely perfectly with the protagonists and the subject matter, and the way those things match up and meld together makes the series so much more absorbing.

but yeah i always liked a writing style and a narrative voice that was fitted to the characters/content, and i think larsson did it particularly well - even if it's a sort of chicken or egg situation with him. we'll never know since he died of those Natural Causes before he could write anything else and all. anyway! i would have done this regardless, because literally all of my favorite authors do it to some degree, which is why they are my favorite authors. (much of what people say are benefits you can "only" get from first person narration i feel you can get just as well from a limited third person, if you uh. try.) but yeah TGWTDT is a stand-out example!

i also can't necessarily give TGWTDT/larsson credit for my life long love affair with angry and contrarian good guys, but again it's a stand-out example and an aspiration in this.

Eddie Munson isn’t your stereotypical snobby metalhead <3

For starters, he doesn’t just stick to one subgenre of metal. <3

Of course he (most likely) prefers thrash metal (Judas Priest, Metallica, etc.) and possibly even power metal. However, he also likes doom metal because it explores themes that he can personally relate to (i.e. mental health struggles). <3

More-freaking-over, Eddie loves stoner metal because, I mean, c’mon, it’s Eddie. <3

Eddie likes music outside of metal too. For example, the man loves psychedelic rock; certainly not as much as he loves metal, but still. He loves the heavier themes it explores and, of course, the sick-ass guitar riffs and licks it offers. <3

Eddie also has at least some appreciation for some early punk, although he might not necessarily like all of it, because of how it influenced early metal. <3

Generally, Eddie has an appreciation for many different kinds of music. For example, Eddie has an appreciation for some alt-rock. <3

Eddie also has a nostalgic sort of appreciation for early country music (Johnny Cash, Porter Wagoner, Willie Nelson, etc.) because that’s what Wayne listened to most of the time when Eddie was growing up. <3

Fuck, the man secretly even likes Dolly. I mean, how can anyone not like Dolly??? <3

He hates Kenny Rogers though, hates that kind of commercialized country (much like he hates commercialized pop music). <3

He doesn’t hate all pop music though. Just most pop music. <3

Not to mention, Eddie Munson loved Deep Purple as a kid and, consequently, still maintains a nostalgic sort of love for them as he gets older. <3

Really, it’s easier to just establish the genres and subgenres that Eddie absolutely hates because those are much less numerous. <3

Again, Eddie finds most pop music to be too commercialized and peppy for his tastes. For example, he only likes synth-pop when it leans heavily into its psychedelic influence or when it explores deeper themes (the man can get down with some Phil Collins, but only with his more somber/heavier stuff). <3

As much of a satanist as the town of Hawkins believes him to be, Eddie is honestly kind of freaked out by the genuinely satanic and gore-y themes that death metal and black metal explore. He likes the aggression that metal brings, but he doesn’t really dig m*rder (especially not after the spring of ‘86). <3

Eddie also likes to make fun of glam/hair rock for its pop-like hooks and slow jams in his youth, but as he approaches his 40s, he begins to have like a nostalgic appreciation for it much like most dads do. However, he still sort of thinks it’s too tame even then. He’ll also never call it glam metal or hair metal though because, even in his 40s, he maintains that Twisted Sister is not metal. <3

All in all, Eddie can find something to like about every genre (though he certainly has his favorites and, definitely, some strong preferences), so long as the music is not overly commercialized, peppy, or shallow. <3

Eddie is versatile; he tolerates a lot of different kinds of music (especially the ones that he knows are your favorites), but he still prefers his favorite metal subgenres at the end of the day. <3

Most importantly, as rockstar!Eddie spends more time working in the music industry (or as regular ol’ Eddie grows more as a musician), he develops a deeper appreciation for musical talent in general, which allows him to at least tolerate music that he might otherwise write off as being lame. <3

My coord for Forbidden Door! Simple look, but I liked it. Wish my accessories had come in on time, but I'm happy.

I put my thoughts on the PPV under the cut. Theres a lot, and its the good, the bad and the ugly. So proceed with caution.

- I'm used to going to shows in NJ and PHL, so we were impressed by efficiency and organization at UBS.

- Like I said, great seats. We were in the 100s, row 10. Would choose seats like that again.

- I've only been to two live wrestling events and forgot how annoying wrestling fans can be when they aren't engaged with what they are watching. Just talking about anything and everything if they don't know the wrestler in the ring. I get not everyone wants to do research, but be a little curious? Be engaged and see wbaf they have to offer?

- MJF got a massive pop, but once the wrestling started it was pretty quiet. I still don't get his thing and I think a lot of fans are more there for his persona than in ring ability.

- Hiromu was pretty over which made me happy considering the over-under of foreign talent reception.

- ZSJ v Orange Cassidy was excellent and following it up with Jericho felt absolutely criminal.

- I absolutely would never be able to tell from online how over The Acclaimed are. The crowd went wild for them AND loved their rap. The match was honestly pretty fun! And seeing Okada and Tanahashi IRL felt pretty special.

- Dragon match felt like it was a "for the wrestlers" match. Also some peoplle left right after. I guess thats what they paid all that money to see.

- Ladder match was fun! I think it was sligntly dampened for me because half the people involved were very obviously not going to win. CM Punk chants were annoying. No one knew ELP which was a crime. Takashita should have won and taken the belt with him to Japan idc. 

- Takeshita is so over. And hes so impressive IRL. Heard a lot of people shocked by how big he is.

- I love Stephanie Vaquer so much! Shes quickly becoming one of my top favorites. Her and Mercedes had a Top 3 match last night. Shes a superstar! The way people were trying to derail the match and she MADE them care. It was also crazy how quickly the crowd turned on Mercedes? She did one move which looked cool to me but the arena shifted to Stephanie on a dime. Obviously knew she wasn't going to win but I'm glad she made such a strong impression.

- Just to reiterate. Just because you don't know someone, doesn't mean you should just mentally check out. Why are you talking about the fourhorsewomen during this match? Its absolutely insane to me how some wrestling fans can't watch a match unless they are familiar with the lineage of both wrestlers.

- The Naito v Mox match was bad. Just... felt bad. Naito didn't seem right the whole time. Personally I think he came out looking worse and I know who he is and how great he was. Look, Naitos legacy is secure but if the goal is to get people interested in NJPW that was the worst mstch to showcase it. And I can't blame the fans on this. Stephanie and Mina both won over the crowd. If you didn't know Naito (and plenty of people didn't, I heard them asking who he was) then this match certainly wouldn't make you want to learn. 

- I was looking forwad to people no longer complaining now that Naito has the title except now the complaint is that he has it and NJPW is screwed because they don't have anyone worth taking it off him. Glad I got into DDT because NJPW discourse is going to be annoying until the G1 starts.

- Swerve v Ospready was out of this world. Genuinely felt like it could have gone either way. The timing on the counts was immaculate. You should have heard the boos when Don Callis appeared. And Nana got to be the hero! The whole arena was absolutely rocking with Swerve.

- There were two weird Ospreay fanboys who kept yelling 'Fuck Swerve'. No one was joining them, even other Ospready fans. It felt weirdly racist because they KEPT DOING IT even though no one else was paying then any attention?? I think people were also getting restless because someone started shrieking intermittedly in the crowd and then people started screaming for them to shut up.

- Speaking of bad fan behavior. Absolutely fuck fans who try to make the show about them. When Stephanie and Mercedes were going hard this asshole in a celtics shirt stood up and of course the crowd started chanting at him. You freaks only do that shit during womens matches.

- Back to Swerve v Ospreay and in any case the end of the show. Beautiful finish, surprising finish! Definately thought Swerve was going to TD91 him but it was a surprisingly kinder finish? Which I'm hoping is where Adam Page comes in. Speaking of which I think a lot of us were lingering around waiting for a confrontation. People almost started booing when it just ended like normal.

- All in all, a lot of fun! I definately want to see more live events when they're in my area! Worth the three hour drive

ok this is stupid i acknowledge that its stupid and im being crazy but. idk if its just me or if its genuinely kinda weird that stddie fans give steve a like. for lack of a better word kinda stereotypically gay music taste in terms of how the fandom decided he loves pop divas and disco and such things (even though in the show he mostly listens to classic rock and post punk/new wave lol) and they solely use it as a punchline and as something eddie (and sometimes the rest of the group) tease him about and even if it's done "lovingly" it's still from a place of implied superiority. and its esp funny when they say "oh its because it's so mainstream and commercialized" as if eddie doesn't listen to some of the most mainstream most famous and most commercialized metal bands in the world lol. idk sorry for this bout of insanity i just feel like this fandom is genuinely really weird and homophobic like at its very roots even if it's not aware of it

HM yeah i can definitely see it being particularly weird with how they do it just to have him be made fun of for it it does feel off..... also as if eddie wouldn't like abba or something. i do totally think steve is a pop diva girlie i just also think eddie could be TOO And yeah the very basis of a typically masculine guy having a less pedestrian more typically "feminine" music taste is that it probably shouldn't be just randomly made fun of 😭

but actually one of my most beloved things is how much rock steve does listen to and i think they do have music in common other than that. ppl tend to fall into the quote unquote anti poser trap probably from the blondie bowie beatles thing with eddie when he was actually literally never shown to hate any other kind of music he just defended that his music is still good music 😭 it also just conforms to what their idea of a metalhead is let alone someone who's like counterculture anticonsumerism when i don't think eddie would literally give a fuck and it feels MEAN to have him Be mean in that way. when he could be mean in so many funnier more truthful ways that don't rely on someone else being the laughing stock!!!! especially someone he actually likes. i think eddie would like that steve likes an unexpected range of music it's honestly weird to ME that people forget liking a lot of those genres wasn't Actually the most popular like what 80s teen boy was actually listening to new wave and fucking . olivia newton john. let alone anything that could be deemed "girly" i think eddie would at the very least be able to recognise steve's particular love for music and i guess his own boldness in that area and it would call to his own even if he did theoretically just absolutely hate it the core value would mirror his own he would probably pass out from being too horny about it!!! like there is a certain kind of statement you give with liking anything sometimes and especially at the time even being like a fan of QUEEN or musical theatre isn't something that was just taken like "Oh you're such a prep!"

TRAITS

Your “canon” trait combination? I did Mystical and Keen Eye on my first playthrough and i honestly really liked it. Combining a more “practical” trait like Keen Eye and a more ‘emotion” based trait like Mystical really balanced the interactions between the characters and environment for me in a way that didnt make one or the other seem useless

What 3rd trait would you add for hardcore mode? After genuinely thinking about it probably Talk to Animals. I have no clue how useless or not it would be in Hardcore Mode but i love all those critters and any extra info is good info, right? 2nd choice may be Street Smart for obvious reasons and a more practical application!

What trait are you least drawn to? Hot. I have heard it can open up more but it kinda seems like it could be a free pass for MC to be the Worst while still being buddies with people just bc they’re attractive and idk how i feel about that. I also don’t really flirt too much even on romance routes. I’m sure the writing would still be incredible tho as nothing has felt like a let down yet!

Coolest trait? I just started a Streetsmart + Talk to Animals combo and i really like Streetsmart so far. Seems like the one I might choose if you only got one option instead of 2! Will have to finish the playthrough to confirm my thoughts tho bc i surprisingly miss Mystical, at least in trying to outstubborn Sybil (even if it doesnt work)!

ROMANCE

Who are you romancing? I have my first MC who i guess is closest to my “canon” playthrough branching off with different saves bc i am unsure if staying single or romancing Reese or Kaneeka is more in line with the personality im developing for her. Kaneeka is a fellow goth so of course i love her and my MC is punk as hell so theres some crossover there, but also horror movies and weird fucked up body horror art is always fun as hell so theres my boy Reese. But honestly the friendships have been fulfilling enough that i wouldnt need MC to romance anyone i guess.

What romance are you least interested in? Waynes is probably 50 shades of fucked up and i dont personally want to give it a shot but i might for a really weird MC so strangely i might have to say Stella? Not that she isn’t the sweetest but i kind of like her with Tabitha potentially, even if its not a Canon Thing.

Who would you romance if every character was eligible? Still Reese, Kaneeka, and Avery. They all have good interactions with the MC and although the game isnt 100% done yet at this point im not sure other characters would have the same amount of friendship built up to where i would want to start a romance.

MISC

What character would hurt the most if something bad happened to them? Avery honestly. Theyre very mellow and friendly and one of my MCS faves and i would be pissed if i fucked up something and got them seriously hurt.

Would you stay in Scarlet Hollow once the week is over? Im not sure there will BE a Scarlet Hollow once the week is over. Either it will be wiped out by Supernatural Shenanigans or the strike will end the coal mine (as it probably should) and everyone will have to move anyway. Even if somehow the town is Fine my MC is probably going to die or something bc holy shit Mystical is feeling very foreboding.

Who would you vote for dog mayor? I think i will know for sure when i finish my Talk to Animals playthrough. I take this stuff very seriously after all.
