#i have the most basic of basic knowledges when it comes to tarot

One of the things I'm loving about Agatha All Along (among many, many things) is Lilia's sudden outbursts involving tarot. So far we've had two cards mentioned, and I kinda wanted to analyze how they're being used. Note; I'm fully just an amateur hobbyiest when it comes to tarot, I mostly use it as a backdrop to my homebrew D&D campaign cause I enjoy the symbology of it, so I may get things wrong.

So first up -

Three of Pentacles - This one is triggered when Lilia sees the 'Three Star' on her eviction notice and she writes down the names of the rest of the coven. This one is pretty straightforward - at its most basic Three of Pentacles represents teamwork. Kinda important when you're forming a coven. It emphasizes collaboration and shared goals, all the things Agatha is going to need to survive the Road.

What I find interesting is that the Reverse reading is equally important; lack of cohesion, conflict, poor motivation, and ego are all part of the Three of Pentacles Reversed. They are also very much Agatha's flaws, and her current predicament is a direct result of those flaws.

So all in all, it's use in Agatha All Along is pretty straightforward; Agatha needs a team, they need to collaborate and work together. They, especially Agatha, need to be wary of ego, selfishness and disharmony, or they will fail.

The High Priestess - This one is triggered the first time Lilia meets Jennifer Kale. This one is waaay more interesting in what it means, IMO. In it's upright position, the High Priestess invokes intuition, sacred knowledge, and the subconscious mind. It speaks of femininity, although maybe not quite as strongly as the Empress. It makes sense for Jen; she's the most overtly feminine of the witches, wearing soft, light pink when Lilia meets her. Her speciality is Potions, which speaks to having a good deal of specialized knowledge.

However, this is a case where on first glance, the Reverse is actually stronger in Jen. The High Priestess Reverse is all about the disconnect from intuition, withdrawal, and repression. Like a witch who has been disconnected from her magic because she's been bound. It's no wonder that Lilia pegged her as The High Priestess immediately, since she seems to represent at least parts of both aspects.

What's really interesting though is what we see in the third episode. It's a trial, especially tailored for Jen, and we see just how fully she represents The High Priestess. Her self-doubt, caused by the disconnect from her magic, is STRONG, because she doesn't trust the intuition and knowledge that still exist within her. They only survive when she starts to trust herself again. There's also kind of a neat detail about the fact that they all hallucinate - bringing their subconscious to the surface - which is just another facet of the High Priestess.

One other fun thing; I very much doubt this was intentional, but The High Priestess is 2 of the Major Arcana, which makes it the 3rd card (since The Fool is 0). This is the 3rd episode of Agatha All Along, but since the first 2 were shown together, this is the 2nd night of aired shows. I just think it's a fun connection.

It does suggest that the show is using the cards to do some decent foreshadowing. For sure at the end of the 2nd episode, I assumed that the reading wasn't that deep, and for the Three of Pentacles, it may not be. But after the third episode and the way Jen's connection to the card grew stronger, I'm more interested to see what other cards will be mentioned and what role they'll play in the show. I know Lilia is holding The Tower in one of the promo posters, and I can't wait to see if that ties into Lilia personally, or if it's just part of the general theme of the show. It could go either way - The Tower represents chaos, and one of the working subtitles of the show was Coven of Chaos, so it's possibly just a reference to that.

Annual Profections are based also on Astrology, and mostly on our ages and houses. Basically, this tool explains that depending on which age (and so birthdays) we are, we embody a certain house that year. For example, when you will turn 25, you'll embody the 2H more. It usually means you'll probably be more focus on savings, money, perhaps making more money this year, or also changing the way you manage your money, etc. Each House has a different meaning. Of course, this doesn't mean you will need to wait to be on a certain house to do something. It just means as an individual, those houses will represent your more intern focus. And it may actually go naturally, without you need to force anything. Life is most likely to put you through certain transformations based on the houses' themes.

Numerology's Personal Year

This isn't a subject I know very well, I just have some base. So if you are interested in it, I suggest checking more on Tumblr or the Internet. An account that has more knowledge is @lilithsrealm. I suggest checking their account!

Numerology is a great tool too to check on your birthday. Just as with SRC and Annual Profections, Numerology can also tell you in what phase you'll enter this "new year". You'll need to take your birth day, birth month, and the current year of your birthday, add all of those numbers together, and then get a number that will be the total of all of those, and this will be your personal year number!

Example: I was born on August 6th, so 8 / 6. And this is the year 2024. So I'll calculate 8 + 6 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 4. All together this makes 22, so it's my personal year number this year. So, specific case, but 22 is a master number, so in this case we don't really add it together again. But if you end up with any other number than 10/ 11/ 22 or 33, then you add it together. Even if mine is 22, the 4 energy will still be there, but 22 is important. I say 4 because 2+2=4 (lol).

Every year, on your birthday, your personal year number change, indicating you'll go through another cycle of your life. Each numbers mean something specific, so I suggest making more researches after finding out yours!

Destiny Matrix is an Esoteric tool that explores the 22 Arcana's of the Tarot to see a different approach of yourself and your life, as a Chart, similar to Astrology. It's a tool that also enable you to develop your full potential as an individual. Numbers and Chakras are used instead of signs, houses and degrees. Numbers on the Chart will go from 1 to 22, representing each Tarot's 22 Major Arcanas. Colored Numbers are your main energies, they are also great tools to understand your true potential and why you came into this life, but also past life, desires, and your soul's purpose. On each sides of the chart, you'll see your different ages, representing different eras of your life. And above those different ages, you'll see a number, between 1 to 22.

Different ages then represent different birthdays. And the numbers above those age represents the different energies, based on the Tarot's Major Arcanas. pile two, this is someone who is salty that you’ve finished learning whatever lessons you needed to with them. they’re salty that you’re moving past challenges (that you’ve probably faced because of them) and now they’re resenting you because you decided to move forward with your life. with the karmic relationship card, I feel like for many of you, this is an ex or an ex dating partner. this definitely could be a friendship too though, because karmic relationships aren’t just romantic. you can have a karmic relationship with anyone in your life tbh, but this is someone who triggered you a lot. there was a lot of pain - maybe even trauma - I heard “abuse” so this could be somebody who abused you. so now that you’ve learned the lessons that you needed to with them, and it seems like you’ve ascended onto the next stage of your life, you’ve gained a lot of peace with this temperance card. and with the seven of swords, this person wants to come and disturb your peace or whatever dream life that you are living. because a lot of you are living a very emotionally fulfilled life. this person cannot let go of you although they hold a lot of resentment towards you. they haven’t learned the lessons that they needed to learn which is why they’re stuck in the same place that you left them in - especially mentally. As i was pulling your first few cards, i asked Saturn whats your message, and I heard,"Insight, Knowledge, Power". This really lines up a lot with what your cards have to say. Similar to pile 3, I see you guys have been manifesting something too. I also get the energy that you guys have a family to take care of, as well. Specifically Im seeing two boys. They both have a lot of energy, and are most likely very young and nice. For you I see that you are very in tune with the cosmos. I'm definitely getting moon energy from you. You are super connected to your intuition, and I was also sensing something about the Merkaba. Your Merkaba is your cosmic vehicle, and I'm surprised your energy did not pull the chariot because to me that represents your merkaba. However you did pull The Wheel of fortune and I'm seeing that you're mastering how to move, and what I mean by this is your stepping into what's meant to be for you, your stepping into your purpose. Honestly looking at these knight cards they all represent fast moving energy, so this is going to be happening very fast for you I see. I feel like you guys are very powerful in the spiritual world when it comes to speaking. First off somebody's drain may be stopped up, and the numbers 24,27, or 31 could be significant. I'm just being called to point that out. I see that Saturn is telling you to break from their chains. When I say there I mean saturn's chains, and whatever those chains could be a person or a thing you're around. These things are leading you to water yourself down, I don't think you're genuinely being yourself, and this is something that is going to sabotage your inner gifts,and awakening, your path honestly. Saturn wants you to change your course right now, and it has a lot to do with you

Ask yourself what am I doing right now that's holding me back? What am I attaching myself to that is no good, and makes me look bad? What person, place or thing is holding me back from my purpose? Im getting all of this without pulling tarot so let me do that first before I continue lol... Wow so for your moonology cards you have; Waxing Moon~ What do you need to release? Wow just wow! Also you have disseminating moon~ Take time to breathe out, Full Moon in Pisces~ Balance spirituality & practicality. So there is definitely a realization you're coming too, something may have made you confused. Once You remove yourself from a certain situation, you may be able to come to a conclusion. So I am also seeing money for this pile, and new beginnings. These will be very abundant and practical for you. These will be long lasting results because Saturn has had you work on a craft of yours for so long.

If you haven't been working on your craft, I'm also seeing that Saturn is telling you to gain some willpower to do so, and I think they will be stepping in to make you do so.

The Problem with How We See Astrology

Astrology is not a science. But both proponents and detractors treat it as if it is.

If it were, each time the Sun is in your Zodiac sign, you should be on top of the world. Every time there is a new moon, you would be undergoing a dramatic rebirth. And as long as you can read your natal chart, then you should know how your entire life would play out.

Because that is what science is. Accurate, precise, demonstrable, undeniable, replicable.

In science, any number of individuals who mix the same amount of the same elements using the same method in the same environment will create the same formula.

That is not what astrology is. One Leo Rising could be the epitome of victory and glory, while another could be the poster child for loserdom and self-pity. Because astrology is not a science.

What it is, is an instrument of the occult. And like everything to do with the occult, it only lends itself to those who have faith in it, those who were born with the gift for it, and those who have the will to wield it.

But since astrology involves numbers, it is easy to fool people into thinking it is a science. If someone comes up with any system, and slaps some angles and degrees on it, we think of it as irrefutable. As Universal law. As the Gospel truth.

And when these systems, such as interceptions, the planetary dignities and asteroids, end up not matching our reality… the majority of us conclude that either astrology is fake, or we are too much of a beginner to understand it.

Worse, so many of us conclude that someone simply didn’t consider the other elements in the natal chart. The truth is, if you look at every aspect in your chart, everything starts to contradict itself. Every interpretation ends up being cancelled out by something else. Venus is in the Seventh House? Early marriage. Oh, but Saturn’s there too? Late marriage. In the end, you get average-age marriage, which most people could’ve predicted for themselves without the help of astrology — which now seems entirely useless.

That would never happen in science. No matter how many elements are in a theory or an equation, every single one would end up supporting each other.

When I was new to astrology, I was presented with so many “best and most accurate systems in existence”. Vedic, Draconic, Whole Houses… I compared their declarations and predictions to my own life and reality. Nothing resonated. It mattered not how ancient, famous and numerous their fans are.

At the end of the day, what astrology does is unearth our past and prophesy our future. It is a method of divination. So treat it like tarot, scrying or tasseography. Learn the basic principles, and then combine that knowledge with your own intuition to arrive at the truth – instead of simply relying on what others, with all their numbers, are telling you.

The stars, like our palms, are a map of our destiny. But there are right and wrong ways of reading of a map. So explore astrology from every direction, until you discover the correct orientation.

You guys are actually very good at working with other people and friends and even teamwork can be important to some. Just like sung hoon you want to show that you are versatile and capable

but most of you are also self limiting because you don't know your worth and you are always self second guessing yourself on everything and anything you do

For some reason you need him and feel that he is reliable, also you are the type of person that is always doing it all for everyone, your shoulders are full of burdens and weights since you want to show that you are a good and reliable persona yourself

Okay, you guys bias him because he represents the epitome of what you want to conquer. Loyalty and innocence. Basically most o you are dominating creatures, some of you are control freaks, always exercising control of your life because you are shit afraid of not being able to control anything around you

Like Sunoo, you might have experienced some kind of trauma and pain, something that keeps you from recovery and you end up resisting the change and not wanting to leave the pain because i's all you know

a lot of you are procrastinators and you find Sunoo reliable in that way

family can be quite important as well

a lot of you self work a lot, you always try to do things by yourself, and believe that Sunoo needs someone that would take care of him as well, a lot of hustling energy too.

There isn't really a pattern when it comes to people that bias Jungwon, mostly it shows that you guys can easily feel bored and you dwell on it easily and need Jungown's presence and energy in order to get something motivator

I think you being a witch helps you think outside the box while working, it also helps you read the Bones better.

You often try and connect with the sprit of the victim, you feel it helps you find the killer and better understand the victim and their pain.

With your interest in the spirit of the victim your often cought talking to the Bones, the other squints find it weird and unsettling especially when you start to space out. Wendell and Fisher are the only ones that don't find it weird.

You are also very much respectful of the victims soul, this cause many debets between you and Bones. She has mentioned time and time again she doesn't believe in souls. You don't take it personal.

Temperance can't really wrap her head around it at first, but she uses her knowledge of other culters to try and understand.

She may not believe in the spiritual aspect of your life, but she doesn't try and degrad your heritage.

She might get too technical or scientific at times but you don't take things personal even if she basically says your kind isn't possible.

The one who was fascinated the most was the Jeffersonian's very own Wendell Bray, he couldn't help but fall for you. He loved that you were unapologetically yourself, you reminded you of Luna Lovegood or Hermione Granger from Harry Potter.

He didn't waste time asking you out. Tho you guys hit it off immediately, you both decided to take things slow and let your relationship grow.

He never shys away from who you are and he'll always ask questions to learn more about you and the lighter side of witches.

He'll get into tarot card reading with you and love learning what each card means. Unfortunately you scared Lance Sweets with one reading a couple of months prior.

“the picture freaks me out” Lance said.

Wendell is the exact opposite and just let's you explain what each one means. His favorite one is the 'lovers' card, he asked you to be his girlfriend with one.

Jack Hodgins, one of your closer friends always makes harmless jokes. “so... What's your hogwarts house? And tell me... is it leviosa or Leviosra?”

It's all in fun and you know it, you'll always give him a smart ass awnser and you both will laugh it off.

When you actually do get agervated with him it's not because of the witch jokes, your emotions are easy to read and Hodgins will quickly catch on. Most of the time he'll through in a joke.

“please don't use avada kedavra on me” he said flinching away.

When Wendell got sick you want into a deep spiral trying trying to find somthing that could help. You even went to lengths of asking your great aunt that still practiced with spells if anything could help.

“i knew it would be a waste of time” you groaned and hang the phone up abruptly.

It killed you that you couldn't heal him or anything, you weren't powrful enough. And even if you were it would drang you of your power and probably be in a lot of pain, you wouldn't tell Wendell that though.

He didn't care, he just wanted your love and comfort through the hard times and that's exactly what you did.

You got through it like any other hard ship and you couldn't be happier when you found out he beat cancer in the ass.

And everyone knows Angela had been secretly planning your wedding as soon as you and Wendell started dating.

When you actually did the announcement of your engagement Angela pulled out a big, thick binder of ideas.

“how long have you been planning this?”

“around the time you guys started dating” you raised an eyebrow. “come on, I got excited and Avalon said it was gonna happen”

Temperance helped out alot too and the wedding was absolutely gorgeous. That was also the first time any of the Lab geeks and Squinterns saw so many witches in one place.

“would I get in trouble if I threw a bucket of water on your great aunt?” Angela asked. “go for it” you said, sipping your wine.

You never felt so excepted in one place, unlike other places the Jeffersonian welcomed you with open arms and embraced who you are as a person.

hello this is more about tarot but how you do get into it? Honestly your posts made me so interested but I don’t even know the first step myself 🥲

Hey:) I'm very happy there's interest in that as I've been actually contemplating about making educational content or even a course or something, sometime in the future💗

A few basic tips from me would be:

1. buy yourself a deck you resonate with (doesnt have to be the rider waite tarot)

2. watch readings on youtube from readers u resonate with. The practice of choosing the right pile itself is a good beginner exercise.

3. journaling, shadow work, meditation, writing in general all are very good exercises to calm your brain down and tap more into your heart and be able to feel the finer aspects of life. Also to get to know yourself and your energy better - that way you can pick up easier on things that don't belong to you (others energy during readings)

4. learn the basics of tarot like each suit (the elements), major & minor arcana, the journey of the cards, the meaning / symbolism of every card. Knowledge in numerology and astrology also would be very helpful.

5. despite tip 4, don't focus all too much on the meaning and let your intuition work too. If you focus and obsess over the traditional meaning of each card you will be doing the reading with your head instead of your heart. And i believe the best readings come from the heart cuz they're the most pure and genuine.

6. Take every reading with a grain of salt. No matter who does it. If its you or another experienced reader. Energy is maluable and what was said today, might've been true for today, but may not be true for tomorrow. If you obsess over the readings or get paranoid or let any other toxicity infiltrate your headspace regarding the readings/topic - they won't come out pure. Meaning your intuition will be dampened by the paranoia for example and since tarot works with your own energy, u'll be attracting cards that reflect that. And then your brain will use them to affirm to your paranoia - or whatever other bias you're having. Its very important to have a pure and relaxed energy when you read so nothing interferes with the process. This is done with lots of self work or if you're generally gifted with a personality/energy like that (i think i.n could be a great reader if he tried😂i just had to mention him)

How to Write Good Omens Meta

Someone left something in my ask box that intrigued me:

My Ask is for insight into the theory of clues and how S2 clues move and build S3. Is there a meta on this? (If not, would you consider it at some point?)

Well, I did consider it, and here’s my first shot at answering this really good question. It's more about the art of writing than of clue analysis, but I may do a second piece in this series, if it feels necessary. Anyway, here we go:

Learn Something New

People want to read meta to learn something that they didn’t know before. This probably means you will have to learn something that you didn’t know before. Some meta-analysts arrive pre-loaded with a rich background in costuming, tarot, biblical canon, and the wide array of cultural references that appear in the show. We also seem to have a fair number of psychologists (formally trained or otherwise) representing. I (and others: see Chekhov's Contract by @ineffablyruined) happen to have a background in law and so I was able to make a unique contribution via my piece Sovereignty, Citizenship, and the Bookshop. But for other topics, I have to self-educate.

In my personal opinion, the work on direct canon analysis (that is, watching the show and reporting what you see) has largely been done and I don’t think there will be many more breakthroughs until some people go away and come back with a freshly informed perspective. Personally, I’m waiting for someone to go learn everything there is to know about S.W. Erdnase and tell us what they found, because that is a very specific reference that I haven’t seen fleshed out yet (link it in the reblogs if it already exists!).

Don’t Be Afraid of Outside Sources

For example, quite a few times I’ve gone away to read outside source material before writing a new meta. Good examples are: Honolulu Roast, The Lament of the Metatron, and The Hornet in the Beehive. These are topics where I had no particular advantage over anyone else, I just had a question and decided to keep digging until I had something that looked like an answer.

On choosing a topic: in each of these cases I began with an in-show piece of information that seemed both unambiguous in its directness and yet unexplained. Why is there a mysteriously appearing sign in the coffeeshop that says Honolulu Roast? Who is the Metatron? Why is there so much attention drawn to bees when Crowley goes up to Heaven? If I start with a solid question and then follow an investigative pathway, usually beginning with the Bible given the nature of this show but not always, I’ll usually find something.

There are also some Clues that we’re basically told to investigate. The books on the shelves. The movie playing in the background in The Resurrectionist Pub. These are unambiguous breadcrumbs but they’re a lot of labor. I’m not going to read all those books and watch all those movies. So pick one (1) and go read it, or watch it, and then tell us what you found, so I can read your 1,500 word piece to learn what I need to know about it. 

Sometimes you get enough information for a meta just by hanging around long enough and absorbing information. That’s how I put together my pieces on Terry Pratchett’s Death and Crowley’s Dream. The trick in this case is to be able to synthesize it, and for that, the very best way to learn how to do that is read other people’s meta.

Specializing

The asker asked the most important question of all: what’s the balance between trying to manage all the Clues or ignoring them entirely? Well, think of it this way (I’m borrowing an XKCD comic for brevity):

The takeaway here is, when you get a PhD, you become a hyperfocused expert in a very narrow topic and you’re relying on lots and lots and lots of other PhD students becoming highly specialized experts in other topics so that together you are expanding the diameter of human knowledge.

We (meta-analysts) are all getting PhDs in Good Omens, one way or another. Some people are doing their theses in color theory. I am doing mine on the concept of memory and identity permanence (though frequently dabbling in law). Yet others have flung themselves body and soul into the topic of Crowley’s gender and God bless them. Heck, there’s a team of people on Discord who are on any given day ripping the Bentley down to its studs and building it back up again. Feel free to explore while you seek out your passionate topic but don’t feel the need to tackle all of them. You’ll find the one that you fit best in. 

You do not have to solve the S3 plot puzzle by yourself. You have to find two pieces, put them together, and then go find a buddy that also has two pieces and see if your pair of pairs makes a quartet. Literally. That’s what we’re doing here guys. It’s a team effort or nothing at all.

Organize your ideas into digestible segments

Great, so you learned something new, you have a tantalizing hypothesis, and you’re ready to write! But what does a good meta look like?

Your abstract (which I recommend you write last) will go at the top, followed by evidence in a logically progressive order that finally culminates in your conclusion. If you’ve ever written a five paragraph essay, you have these tools in your toolbox. And yes, sometimes you will even need to rebut counterarguments (“but Neil said” is the bane of my existence) just like your teacher taught you. But it shouldn’t be formatted like a five-paragraph essay. This is not an 8.5”x11” sheet of paper with 1” margins: this is Tumblr.

Walls of text are great and all but reading handicaps come in all flavors and I for one benefit greatly from having section headers that help me navigate a meta. I’m much less likely to read it if all I have to find my place by is paragraph breaks.

Section headers should tell me what the next paragraph or two are about, and if I read just the section headers, I should have a pretty good idea of what evidence you’re pulling from where and what conclusion you’re going to support with that evidence.

Here’s my opinion on gifs: if I need to see Michael Sheen’s micro-expressions to really understand your point, include it. If I just need a reminder of where we are in the story, or what a costume looks like, a still is fine and less distracting. For a lot of things, though, images are unnecessary. You’ll find the right balance but don’t overburden your written work with images. I think there are quite a few people who only read my work on Ao3 because they simply don’t like the Tumblr, image-centric format.

Have a main takeaway

What does all your evidence point to? It may feel like stating the obvious, but state it anyway. Put a little ribbon on top of this gift you have given to the fandom. Label it. Tell them exactly what your conclusion is from all this information you gathered.

…but don’t feel a need to draw a firm conclusion

In my meta Continuity Errors, I conclude that Crowley stops time in order to move something that was hidden in the bookshop out of the bookshop. I do not speculate on what exactly that something is that he moved. I don’t need to. By leading others down this path, I am tapping the collective resources of the hive mind to think about what exactly was hidden with the bookshop’s protection. They may have some information I don’t because they’ve been looking other places. Not having a hypothesis for this shouldn’t (and didn’t) stop me from publishing my work.

Go back to the top and write your intro/abstract

Have you written your main takeaway? Did you support it with evidence? Good. Now take that and write a 20-30 word elevator pitch that you’re going to put at the top of the meta so that people know what it’s about before they commit to 1,000-2,000 words of being led down the garden path. I have a bad habit of burying the lead, and I’m trying to break it. For a moment people were worrying about putting big revelations below the cut so that we’re not interfering with Neil, but I don’t think Neil has ever seen my work and I doubt he ever will, and at this time my opinion is that playing “hide the lead” is more of a hindrance to the fandom than helpful to protecting the integrity of the IP. So be bold. Tell people exactly where you’re going with this and a short roadmap of how you’re going to get there. You don’t necessarily have to “give away the goods” but the theme should be obvious. An okay-ish example of an abstract is the intro to my first meta. My abstract for Continuity Errors is decidedly more tongue-in-cheek. You'll find your own style.

Cite and Tag

If you read someone’s post and it gave you a great idea, cite them as inspo! It’s a feel-good moment for them and it ties the fandom together. If you’re relying on your own prior work or someone else’s work to support a point, link the piece and tag the author. You will probably want to start copying links to metas that you like into a doc or spreadsheet to make this easier. Check out mine to get an idea of how you could organize a spreadsheet, or check out this doc to see an alternative approach to meta database management.

Recruit a Mentor/beta

Various Tumblrites have published comments or posts that they are willing to beta other people’s work. Reach out to those people before you need them and ask if, whenever you’ve written your next piece, if they wouldn’t mind taking a look at it? Have an upfront discussion about turnaround time. Most of us work, and have other obligations, so it’s unlikely we can look at a thing the minute you send it to us, even if we’re active on Tumblr at that moment. Some people have set days off that they know they’ll have time to curl up with a cup of tea and read the first draft of your meta; you may find that having a weekly schedule with someone pushes you to produce and improve at a pace you wouldn’t achieve under your own steam. Writing is a skill; you get better by practicing and getting constructive feedback.

Anyways, I hope someone finds this helpful: maybe meta-analysis seems like an intimidating thing to get into, but it shouldn’t be! ever since benni was young she was curious. with each thing learned they needed to know absolutely everything. as a toddler her favorite word was ' why '. as they continued to grow and ask, benni's parents would push her towards a book ( maybe as a distraction ). so she essentially lived at the library, always reading something new tucked behind the stacks. it truly all started with falling head over heels with the mystery genre.

the thrill of attempting to guess the ending before it was revealed, analyzing clues as if she herself were amongst the pages. around the age of thirteen she began to notice how this distant relative they'd apparently met once when they were four was somehow in every family story. from every generation, transcending every single one. every time benni asked her parents they'd dismiss her and say it wasn't the same person, just multiple generations of the same name. while that answer was plausible, there was an instinctual feeling that it somehow wasn't the case. regardless of how impossible that may be.

over the years benni excelled in school and planned a future around journalism, even writing for their high school paper for experience and to beef up her college applications. with all their efforts, benni ended up accepted into columbia university. absolute dream come true. benni enjoyed college life, thrived in classes and had a healthy enough social life. there was one party that changed her life.

she unfortunately got drunker than intended and ended up in the arms of a very hungry vampire. in all honesty they don't remember most of it, basically only that there were fangs in their neck and then there weren't. the culprit on the ground either unconscious or dead benni didn't know. what she found out felt even more mind boggling. her savior ? that damned impossible relative. the one who now revealed themself as a vampire. admitted that benni's mother had asked them to watch over her for a few months until she settled into school, knowing how unsafe the city could be.

and just then had vampire's been thrown into her universe. benni's relative explaining their story of transition and onward. how with each generation they only introduce themself to family members who have had previous experiences with vampires, always hovering around in attempts to protect their family. then it clicked that her mother must have had interactions with vampires if she knew this relative to send out. now that benni had been attacked they informed her how to defend themself. giving benni their very own discreet wooden stake. this relative then compelled benni to never look into or research anything supernatural besides general knowledge of vampires. they knew the more one knew, the more dangerous it was.

leaving benni behind with their contact information, the relative road off into the sunset and benni was left to go back to their normal life. due to the compulsion she sort of did slide back into their normal life. continuing with school and being aware of but not terrified or overly interested in vampires. after undergrad went grad school and an internship turned job after graduation. though there was something still brewing under the surface, like she needed to start somewhere new.

the move to new orleans certainly did the trick. by this point benni's been in the city for like three months and is becoming increasingly interested in the off feeling inside of her ( internal push to supernatural ) and her interest in vampires is beginning to grow.

You know, prior to the latest RWRB zine being published, I wouldn't have been able to narrow it down to just one, but this JC Leyendecker-inspired piece by @artofobsession is possibly my favorite piece of fanart that's ever been created. It's just -- even nearly a month after it was first posted, it causes beauty aggression in me and I just want to bite it because it's so pretty and glowy and ethereal and lovely and they're just so blushy and so into one another. It's the first fanart print I've ordered in years, and it's going to go on my wall of ephemeral pretty things with my Lindsay van Ekelenburg art and my various tarot card prints from Kickstarter decks.

I mean, obviously I'm tagging you first, @ad-astra13, because you're the Most Excellent of Doc Gremlins and your flailing in my Google Docs has been so, so motivating. Your fiber work is really cool and creative! I'm always intrigued to see which project you'll take on next.

And then there's @hgejfmw-hgejhsf, who even with a bunch of stuff going on IRL still takes the time to DM me a screenshot when someone has recced one of my fics, which -- warm fuzzies just everywhere. Val is one of the sweetest, most deeply passionate RWRB fans I have ever met, and her encyclopedic knowledge of all things book and movie have come in handy on like, dozens of occasions in the few months since I've gotten to know her.

@kiwiana-writes and I basically have the same brain in different bodies on different continents, the vibe is so consistent. Half the time I read his work it feels like it could've emerged from my brain instead of his, and now it turns out he's a pretty gifted songwriter too? Incredible, awe-inspiring, iconic, etc.

@artofobsession and I have a Spider-Man meme thing going on where I yell at Hann about their art, and they yell at me about my writing, and it's just a never-ending cycle of yelling. Pretty amazing to consider that I was Too Scared To Say Hi ™️ for awhile there, because I'm a big ol' introvert. Regardless of what Hann's got going on, I've never read an unkind word that's emerged from their keyboard, and they're super well-spoken and yeah, really glad I started making unhinged bulleted lists of art reviews as a way to break the ice, because they're good people.

Speaking of Spider-Man memes, @seanchaidh7 and I have also been Spider-Manning back and forth these last few months. She's created some really, really incredible art for my Big Giant AU, and just genuinely seems like a cool person. I'm happy we stumbled across each other in this fandom!

@duchessdepolignaca03 is one of the best unhinged idea riffers I've met. She deserves at least partial credit for the idea for my RBB fic, because a simple "fic where [x]" message can lead to a thread of dozens (or hundreds) of messages back and forth just flinging ideas out there to further the prompt. Half the time the riff is all that happens, but occasionally, the riff spawns something way bigger.

And there are folks who either I haven't found on Tumblr, or who left Tumblr behind in like 2013 and haven't looked back -- super grateful for everyone who's enabling my weird little brain to do the thing!

The Ace of swords -  overanalyzing tarot pt 1

the the suit of swords in tarot entails the exploration of the mind; the different ways we engage with ideas, concepts, principals and the different ways we go about communicating thoughts to other people. naturally we should begin with the ace of swords.

One of my fav books on tarot which actually happens to be a guidebook to its corresponding tarot deck, Tarot Apokalypsis, written by Erik C. Dunne and Kim Huggens, had this to say about the ace of swords:

‘‘What must come before word, what must come before thought? What must become before memory? what cannot be seen, yet must come before seeing? I am speech, but i am silent I am spoken of yet I am ineffable. I am the most basic principal necessary for the step from nothing, to choas to something.’‘

The ace of swords is the abstract coming in the form of a thought, its takes the messy, fragmented parts of an idea and gives it the structure to be formed into an idea. Results from a 2020 study showed that people may have 6,000 thoughts per day, yet not all of those thoughts are given meaning. Not all of them get the chance to develop into something, but the ones that do form the basis of a belief.

The ace of swords represents the thoughts we give power to over others. the crown the ace of swords is often paired with throughout different decks is supposed to signify victory, but in this context it represents the status we give thoughts as opposed to the 6,000 other thoughts that pass through our mind a day. 

Divinatory meaning- upright and reversed

reflect on the thoughts you give power to every day. what ideas and thoughts do you give meaning, and how does the meaning you attach to these thoughts impact you. how do your fleeting thoughts form the basis of a belief? this card appears when you’re starting to understand something for the first time, when you’re building the foundational knowledge to understand a larger concept or idea.

in reversed, it gives me the impression of failing to understand the thoughts that pass you by or lacking the foundational knowledge of a concept or skill. it denotes that you’re needing to get back to basics of something and ensuring understanding of it before continuing. 

The ace of swords as a unifying principal

tarot of apokalpysis attaches the ace of swords to the idea of cosmology and how we individually understand how the world came to be. it says;

‘’this assumption of cosmic order is necessary for further assumptions to be made, and its upon this foundation that we build everything else. This refers not only to religion or myth, science to too must build its own cosmology, (or more appropriately, a paradigm) within which is may refer to the laws it has set and decide upon the questions it wants to answer ’’

The ace of swords being connected to this idea of a cosmology or paradigm gives it a more sophisticated interpretation, allowing us to understand the cards that follow the ace of swords. For example, if the ace of swords is a paradigm that sets the basis for understanding a larger topic, then the two of swords is differentiating between ideas and comparing different paradigms to one another. allowing them to compete for accuracy. 

The big bang theory is an example of a paradigm, it allows us to understand how the world came to be. The creation story told in genesis, the norse myth and saga of creation, these are all ways in which people form their basis of understanding of the world and our purpose in it. 

The ace of swords could be the assumptions we have that allow other assumptions to be made on top of that, forming a foundation for an opinion or paradigm. It’s the pre-requisite understanding of a concept, for example, to understand algebra you would have to understand multiplication, division, adding etc. To understand chemistry you have to understand an atom, its qualities and the various forms matter takes. 

Ace of swords paired with other cards

The ace of swords is a hypothesis in early stages, not yet tested or verified. if the ace of swords becomes paired with the ten of swords, its a hypothesis thats been prematurely dismissed or falsified before it had the chance to grow. 

if paired with the 7 of swords, its a person selectively taking what they feel is true about an idea or paradigm, and leaving what contradicts their ideas, instead of adopting and integrating the whole idea to fit the truth. for example, Christians using the bible only when it fits their worldview, not when it contradicts it. 

when paired with the tower, its an idea that disrupts an existing structure or assumption. Think Kepler revolutionizing how we understand the planets orbit around the sun, developing the three laws of planetary motion. 

Astrology of the ace of swords

the ace of swords refers to gemini, libra and aquarius. All three signs interact with the development and communication of ideas in interesting ways. All three signs are constantly thinking, analyzing, comparing ideas, and creating new ones. Aquarius is innovative and wants to disrupt models of how we think, gemini allows space for several ideas to exist at once, and libra wants to be able to choose between ideas without hurting anyones feelings.

🌱 How do you prepare yourself before a reading?

I usually do a reading right after I wake up from sleep. It's when I'm feel the most refreshed. Before and after each reading, I drink a large gulp of water, stretch myself, move around, look out the window to relax my eyes and spaced out to empty my mind lol. In short, I make myself feel physically comfortable and active enough.

🐦‍⬛How do you handle challenging or negative readings?

Like how I handle a challenging or negative person, I guess? I listen and try not to judge.

One kind of challenge in a reading is when I don't feel or get anything. I feel stuck and empty. The thing is, when I actually voice it out or write it down, the fog will get clearer, like a shift in perspective. If it's still difficult to read, I will leave the reading for a while and come back later. Like when your friend is sulking and silent, you give them space and time.

🥀Have you ever experienced tarot or spiritual burnout, and how did you overcome it?

I have a period of 6 or 7 years of Tarot burnout. I barely touched it. But as my spiritual beliefs evolved and changed, I came back to Tarot and found a new inspiration and purpose for it. Nowadays, I mostly use Tarot to ask questions about the general mysteries of life instead of external, practical situations in my life. I just find Tarot works better that way for me.

I believe that burnout of any kind is a sign that shows constriction (a definition of the word constrict: make narrower, especially by encircling pressure). So the action to relieve that feeling of constriction is to widen, to expand, be it your world view, your knowledge, your interests etc.

💡 How do you come up with pick a card readings ideas?

I make a checklist of steps in a journey, each PAC topic is a step in that checklist 📋. Ideally, that's how I wanted to do it. But I'm impulsive so if I come across some interesting topics that I want to do right away, I will do the reading first and then try to slot it in the checklist. Like a series, each episode contributes to the overall plot but there will be some filler episodes.

🦂 How do you handle skepticism from others about your tarot practice?

I don't mention the subject to them anymore 😗. If the scepticism is about my ability, when I feel energetic and persuasive, I will tell them some of the predictions that have come true. I invite them to try for themselves or accept the fact that we are not for each other.

Oddly enough, I haven't really encountered much scepticism or criticism about my occult practice. People's reactions range from surprised, mildly amused, enthusiastic to becoming converted. Pretty encouraging, actually. I even read Tarot for my boss at work lol.

But I do notice some people want to practise Tarot but their environment and community aren't exactly supportive. It's difficult to try to convince or argue in this kind of situation so keeping it a secret is a way to protect it. I hope that they continue to do what they love and will find a supportive community for them.

🍂 What do you wish to see more, and less of, in the tarot sphere?

I want to see less drama in the community. Everyone has a story behind. It's interesting to hear people's different points of view but when it turns into criticism or judgement, it feels suffocating.

I do wish to see more observation posts about Tarot tho, like those of astrology observations. I think that would be a great opportunity to learn and discuss.
