Tumblr media
A/N: Short but very cute, enjoy <3 A/N (2): This is my work please don’t steal it :) ………………………………………………………………………………….……………………
Today is Mary Lou’s birthday, you spend the whole day celebrating her with the entire family, of course you’ve met Matt’s parents before but this was the first time you hung out with EVERYONE including their grandma, uncles, aunts and cousins, and you took the time to talk and get to know every single one of them.
Matt’s mom loves you and you love her too, every time your boyfriend visits his hometown you tag along just so you could spend some time with her. This morning Matt woke up all alone, confused he walked downstairs just to find you helping his mom in the kitchen with all the preparations for her birthday , you spend all morning helping until the guests arrived, then Mary Lou introduced you to everyone, everybody was thrilled to finally meet the girl who Mary Lou can’t stop yapping about.
Right now you are talking to Matt’s grandma, she tells you stories about the boys that you haven’t heard before and you can’t help but laugh at every anecdote.
Matt’s been frustrated all day, of course he’s happy to be there and celebrate his mom but hates the fact that he hasn’t had one moment alone with you all day, he loves his family but they keep getting on his nerves, he just doesn’t wanna share you, he knows you are amazing and wants to keep you all for himself but every time he thinks it’s his turn with you someone else would need you for something.
The only thing he can do is stand in a corner admiring you from afar talking with his grandma, you’re smiling ear to ear, you seem truly invested in the conversation with the old lady and his heart swells. He is to busy staring at you that he doesn’t notice his dad standing beside him until he opened his mouth.
“She is the one, isn’t she?”
Matt looks over at his dad, then looks back at you and it hits him “yeah, she is”
“You know I didn’t think it was possible to love someone as much as I love Nick and Chris but somehow I do, I can’t really explain it though it’s different”
“It’s different but it’s just as powerful, and just wait until you have her children, you’ll heart will explode” Jimmy says amused as he hugs his son and they stay like that for a while.
The birthday was over and everyone was gone, the kitchen was a mess but you insisted Mary Lou that you got it and that she should go to bed and rest.
Nick and Chris are outside picking up the rest of the stuff and you are putting dishes in the dishwasher when you feel some familiar arms around your waist, it was Matt, he hugs you tightly from behind and places his head on the crook of your neck, you feel him breathe in how he leaves sweet kisses between the end of your ear and your jaw, you can’t help but to melt into him and relaxed.
“I missed you today, I love my family but they need to understand you’re mine and not theirs” he mumbles
You laugh “I missed you too but you’re family is great, I don’t mind spending time with them and your grandma is so endearing, I really enjoyed today,”
“Would you enjoy it even more if after we are finished with the cleaning I take you to my room and remind you why I’m way more endearing than my grandma?”
You blushed, turn around and give him a big kiss on the lips “we’ll see, now help me clean Bernie”
“She told you that?!” Matt said with an open mouth, shocked at the fact his grandma shared the nickname she gave him when he was a little boy.
“She also told me about the time you peed your pants at school and she had to pick you up”
“I hope you won’t turn out like my grandma when we’re old because I won’t let you talk to our grandson’s girlfriend EVER!!”

GILMORE GIRLS, MARY-LOU & COOKIES - matt sturniolo x fem!reader
hi babies, i just know matt and his little fall heart would love a chilled cosy evening with his gf watching their favourite shows and you all loved my chris fic with jimmy and mary lou so i hope you all enjoy this xxx
you let out a sigh as you lay your head against the back of the couch, a sense of relief finally washing over you.
it had been an awful day of travelling, the airport so jam packed at LAX with people heading out of the state, delays on almost every flight but yours, however it only caused a knock on effect of bad moods across the airport. your uber had not arrived to take you and the triplets to their home in boston and jimmy had had no choice but to come and collect you all, which only added to the awful mood as the triplets had felt beyond guilty, knowing their dad was busy already that day.
so when you'd finally said hello to everyone, had a bowl of homemade shepards pie that mary-lou had had sat waiting for you all, showered and got into fresh clothes, you could finally relax.
"are you okay, babe?" matt, your ever loving boyfriend said as he appeared around the corner, watching you as you closed your eyes for just a moment.
"hmm" you mumbled, not having the energy to speak and look up at him. you heard him chuckle slightly, and you could feel yourself drifting off to sleep when his weight dropped down at the side of you.
"you can go to bed for a couple of hours if you need to" he said into your ear, before dropping a soft kiss to your cheek. you smiled, embracing his warm touch, finally opened your eyes and turning your head to the side to look at him. his eyes were dark rimmed and his hair was a mess, but he was still so beautiful. you were about to open your mouth when you see chris' figure in the doorway, diverting your eyes straight to him.
"we might head to nathans for a bit, are you two coming?" chris said, and you finally sat up as matt turned his position to face his brother.
"yeah, i'll come." and then he turned back to you. "babe?"
you smiled, reaching out to stroke his face. "i love nathan with my entire heart, but would you mind if i stayed here?"
you already felt guilty, but you'd been so overstimulated for the last 6 hours that the thought of sitting with 4 boys who were all going to be hyped from seeing each other felt too much. you wanted to chill, nap, potentially get some work done on your phone and call in an early night.
"i'll stay with you." matt said instantly, like you knew he would, but you shook your head.
"you've not seen your best friend in months, go." you almost demanded. matt cared for you so much, you could see him already fighting with his eyes, but you smiled softly.
"are you sure?" he said, at the same time you saw mary-lou appear in the doorway too, shuffling past chris.
"are you okay, kids?" she said, and you dropped your hand from matts face to look at her.
"do you mind if i stay here, mary-lou? whilst the boys go to nates"
she beamed at you. "of course i dont mind, my love. this is your home now too."
you smiled at her warmingly before turning back to matt, a smile on his face at his moms words.
"im so tired, matt." you said, and he nodded, dipping forward and pressing a soft kiss to your lips. "tell nate im sorry.
"you'll see him tomorrow, im sure." he smiled.
"i dont doubt it." you chuckle, knowing full well nate was joined at the hip with the triplets whenever they were home. matt stands up, going over to give his mom a hug goodbye, closely followed by chris who then comes over to you, kicking your feet playfully. you'd always had a playful relationship with chris, and you go to kick him back but he runs off into the doorway, slapping matt on the shoulders as he reaches him.
"those boys" mary-lou chuckles at the side of you, and you turn around in time to see her sit at the side of you. "are you okay, my love?" she asks now, and you nod.
"im just tired, and the thought of them all yapping is sending me into another dimension."
she laughs at your words, throwing her head back, and you can't help but laugh with her. once a soft silence falls between you both, you reaches over to the arm rest of the couch and picks up the remote.
"so, i've been watching that show you love" she says now, giving you a smile, and you can't help the excited squeal that overcomes you.
"gilmore girls?" you say.
it was your favourite show, especially when you were home in boston. it had a nostalgic feel that couldn't be replicated anywhere else.
"yes" she chuckles, before the familiar netflix sound fills the living area. "im just about to start season two."
you beam. "my favourite season."
and so the work you were going to do goes out the window, as mary-lou grabs you a blanket, throwing it across your legs as she presses play on the last episode she was on. a soft feeling washing over you as you snuggle down, watching your favourite show.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
you were asleep before matt came back home. the evening drawing in, the soft glow of the tv and the candles around you, the warmth of the triplets childhood home. the adrenaline from the day had had you tired beyond belief. but mary-lou let you sleep as she sat at the side of you, your head lulled on the back of the couch and the blanket spread across you.
you didn’t stir when the triplets came back home, and mary-lou hushed them as they came bounding into the living area where you both sat. the minute matt saw you, his face turned into a smile.
“how long as she been asleep?” he whispered, taking in your peaceful face. nick bounded across and sat next to his mom, who engulfed him in a one arm hug, and chris took place on the floor, resting his back against the couch and pulling out his phone.
“why am i not shocked you’re both sat here watching this?” he says.
mary lou chuckles before looking back to matt. “for the past hour”
he smiled, before he slowly sat down beside you, accidentally brushing his knee against yours.
you woke with a startle, looking up at him, before looking around the room. all eyes were on you apart from chris, who was sat not far on his phone, and you let out a smile as you stretched out your neck.
lifting up your foot, you reach chris’ hands perfectly and gently knock them with your foot, startling him so his phone falls out his hands. everyone erupts into laughter as chris lets out a ‘fuck’ before he turns around and grabs your ankle, pulling you slightly so you shift down the couch.
mary-lou swats his hand away whilst matt yells his brothers name, and you can only laugh.
“your girlfriends annoying as shit, bro” chris says, a joking grin on his face.
you shift your position back to where you were just a second before, finally turning around to face your boyfriend.
“hey, tired girl” he says, and you can’t help but let out a yawn. he chuckles as he leans forward, placing a soft kiss to your lips.
nick and chris have started talking to their mom, and their voices fill the room as matt picks up the blanket, positioning himself right next to you before his arm comes around your shoulder, pulling you into his side before placing the blanket over the both of you.
“cookies are in the kitchen” he whispers, as you wrap your arm around his waist, leaning your head against his chest.
“thank you” you whisper, squeezing his side slightly before lifting your head again to look at him. “sorry i didn’t come.”
he smiles. “doesn’t matter. are you okay?”
“never better” you beam, before laying your head back down on his chest.
the rest of the evening is spent lazily watching your favourite show, jimmy coming to join you not long after. you’re too tired to engage in conversation, but you can’t help the laughs that escape as you listen to your favourite family chat amongst themselves, your boyfriends hands running strokes up and down your arm the entire time.

Lavender Girl
Pairing: Joel Miller x fem!reader
Summary: A field trip [4.7k]
Warnings: financial stress, school fight, June once again introduces an ex, having a muse is creepy and weird, flirting that’s not flirting but it’s not not flirting, June putting her art history knowledge to work
Tumblr media
Most days, you're a good teacher. A teacher that students want to eat lunch with or inadvertently include in their silly TikToks. Most days, you're patient and kind and only have to raise your voice a handful of times, if only to be heard over the blanket volume level of teenage conversation. Today is not one of those days. "Guys!" You yell, pausing the music on your computer and turning to look at your class, obviously annoyed. "We're supposed to be talking about Picasso. I don't know why I'm hearing so much conversation about lunch." It's a lie. There was a fight between two students at lunch. It'd also been the topic of conversation in the teacher's lounge, but still.
"Miss, we already talked about Picasso!" One of your kids bemoans, and you raise your eyebrows at them.
"So, if I asked you right now, you could tell me what historical event his painting Guernica is supposed to depict?" You ask. The entire class goes silent as you wait for a response that never comes, and you sigh. "Please, do your work."
The day started with getting yet another email from another gallery, this time from down south, telling you they loved your work but not enough to showcase or buy it. Then, a text from your manager letting you know that paychecks will be late because of technical issues with the system, even though you're already beyond broke. Then, a sad text from Andie about how she's feeling homesick and misses you and wishes you could get on a plane to come see her. Then, to top it all off, an email from your ex, Henry, popped up the second you pulled into the school.
Hey, long time, no talk! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to reach out and let you know I've got an exhibition going up later next week and wanted to invite you to the opening. It's about-
You didn't read any further, anger and a wave of past emotions drowning you before you could. You and Henry were together all throughout college. You met during a freshman art class and were inseparable after that. He was tall, sensitive, and had a penchant for listening to country music when he worked, leading to many delirious nights spent crooning to Emmy-Lou Harris together. He surprised you with new paint and spontaneous trips to scenic parts of Texas to fuel your inspiration. You were happy for a long time. You even thought you'd marry him at one point. He wanted to be the next young, groundbreaking artist, making you his muse, no matter how many times you tried to assure him you were also an artist. Your work would go up in galleries and exhibitions, and everyone in your small program would gossip about the two of you. "He's so talented. It's insane," you heard one of your classmates say once. "And she's so beautiful."
The compliment dug under your skin and stayed there as your relationship failed. You didn't want to be a muse anymore. You stopped letting him paint you in various states of undress and started asking for more alone time to work on your own stuff. You went from being the perfect, polished doll he could position however he wanted and started living in your paint-stained jeans and old, ratty shirt. You started arguing more and more, first about little things like why he left his paint water cups everywhere, and then about big things like your decision to pursue teaching and the "inspiration" he found in an impressionable freshman. He suddenly moved out after graduation without a word, leaving you to nurse your wounds in a half-empty apartment for the rest of your lease, and you hadn't heard from him until this morning.
There's something more than the sting of hearing from him all these years later that bothers you. You're a high school art teacher struggling to make ends meet, and he's doing exactly what he set out to do. He's getting his work in front of his eyes and receiving praise for it. "Why do you wanna be a teacher when you can just be an artist?" He asked you one morning as you studied for your certification exams. "Or, at least, an artist's wife."
"And what if I'm not good at that?" You asked. "Then what? I'm just supposed to be your muse for the rest of my life? Have kids to fuel someone else's inspiration and have no time for my own work? Wither away while you go on to make art and give talks and become a cynic? Fuck that."
You stand by what you said, even all these years later, but there is an irony in that, even as a teacher, you don't have time to do your own work. Still, fuck that. The bell rings and signals the end of another class, and you quickly stand as students start packing up their stuff. "Okay, guys. Remember, your art history essay is due in two weeks! I'm excited to read all about everything you've learned since we started this unit. I love you, and please make good choices." You announce, hoping that at least some of them are listening to you, as they spill out of the classroom and the next students stream in. Ellie's sweet face is a welcome reprieve when she walks in.
"Hey Bellie! How's your day going, kiddo?" You ask, and she smiles. You'll swear up and down all day that you don't have favorite students, but if you did, Ellie would be one of them.
"Good. I have my signed permission slip for the art club field trip." She says. After your experience with Joel outside the bar, you couldn't sleep and knocked out all the field trip paperwork before falling asleep on your couch. But you weren't safe from his lips and broad shoulders, even in your subconscious.
"Oh, my hero! I've been meaning to remind everyone about those. Thanks for getting that in so quickly." You say as she hands the paper to you, Joel's scribbly signature at the bottom. Somehow, you're not surprised that the box indicating he wants to be a chaperone is ticked. "Perfect. Your dad knows when the field trip is?"
"Yeah. He wrote it down on his calendar and everything." She says, rolling her eyes fondly, and you laugh.
"Well, good, because I'm gonna need all the help I can get when I'm dealing with you guys."
"Hey!" She feigns offense as the bell rings, signaling the end of the passing period, and the last of your students comes running in. Ellie takes her seat near the front, and you grab your silly, colorful pointer to talk about Guernica, which is still proudly displayed on the board. After a quick art history lesson, you release them to work on the projects they've been working on for a week now. They still have a few more days before it's due, so more than half of them are slacking off quietly, which you're fine with. As long as you get a finished assignment at the end, they can do whatever they want.
You play quiet music as they work to help them focus and answer some emails. One email that catches your attention is from the parent of one of your students, Dalton, who's an amazing football player but is less than passionate about art, to say the least. You emailed his dad to let him know he was missing some assignments and could still turn them in late for only a slight penalty, but if he turns in nothing at all, you'll have no choice but to fail him. You also CC'd the football coach so he'd know the academic standing of one of his star players. Needless to say, you've been subject to a few not-so-nice emails from all parties involved.
Once you're done firing off another round of emails, you decide to step away from your computer so you don't have to see the next reply until absolutely necessary. Walking around the room to answer questions, give opinions, or just hear what's happening in students' lives always makes you feel better. In one period, you helped a handful of students put the finishing touches on their projects, heard the latest gossip, and talked one of your girls out of sending a nasty text to the boy who just broke her heart. And they say teachers aren't important.
The second you get a little bit of peace during your planning period, your phone buzzes with a notification. Given all the notifications and messages you've received today, you're hesitant to even pull it out of your pocket. But curiosity wins, and you open your phone to find a text from an unsaved number.
Is there anything I should bring to the field trip? Snacks, gum, alcohol?
You laugh to yourself and start typing a message back.
Alcohol won't be necessary, but it might be good to bring some lunch and a few snacks. I think we're gonna try to have a picnic or something at the museum.
Yes, ma'am.
You still feeling up to chaperone? Teenagers are no joke.
Do I need to remind you that I've raised two? I think I can handle a few more.
Oh, I can't wait to see this.
It can't be that hard, right?
On the day of the field trip, it turns out to be that hard. The only adults accompanying twenty teenagers to the museum are you and Joel. They're excited to be out of school and doing something new, but you can feel your migraine starting before you even get on the bus. Thankfully, the ride to the museum (and the traffic) calms them down, and they're more manageable by the time you arrive. A curator meets you outside the front doors and begins by walking your group through the outdoor sculptures, giving a little bit of history of the museum and the pieces themselves. The kids ask insightful questions and take turns snapping photos or even sketching a rough outline of the piece before moving on to the next. You stay at the front of the group while Joel manages the middle and back, silencing kids with a stern look. You fight a smile when you catch him and Ellie lingering at a sculpture, whispering to each other before he urges her forward and takes a sweet picture of her smiling in front of it.
After the initial walk of the grounds, you stop to have lunch in a sunny garden and listen to the kids gush about their favorite part so far and what paintings they're most excited to see inside.
"Miss, what's your favorite thing here?" Kayla asks.
"I like Dream Village by Chagall. If you find it before me, you'll have to let me know." You say. "Do you have a favorite?"
"Not yet. Maybe I'll find it today." Kayla says.
"I like that attitude!"
"Kissass." Jacob coughs, and you both give him a look. You can feel Joel's eyes burning a hole in the back of your head as you stare at Jacob.
"What's my policy?"
"Are you really gonna make me say it?"
"Yep." You say, and he sighs.
"You can be anything you want to be, but you're not allowed to be a dick." He mumbles.
"Exactly. So, please, be nice," you say as you fish around in your lunch box for something. "Here, have a cookie. It might help make you feel a little better." He mutters a little thanks and unwraps it, already in a better mood after one bite, and you smile.
"You just carry around cookies, waiting for a kid to be in a bad mood?" Joel asks, and you turn to look at him. He's wearing a plain blue t-shirt and jeans with sunglasses sitting atop his head, but you think it might be your favorite thing he's worn in your presence. You like it when he wears color.
"It was my cookie, but he needs it more than I do," you shrug. "Besides, things like that are a great morale booster. It's hard to be grumpy when you've got something sweet."
"I'm inclined to agree with you." He quips a little too smoothly, his eyes flicking across your face and down to your lips, and you feel your cheeks getting hot. Thankfully, all the kids have returned to their own conversations and couldn't care less about what the Adults are talking about.
"You're relentless." You whisper.
"Do you want me to stop?" He whispers back, and you sigh. If you were a stronger or better person, you might be able to think fast enough to come up with a response, but you're not. So, you just look at him and rack your brain for something to say but come up empty. "That's what I thought." He smiles and offers you his sweating Dr. Pepper can as a peace offering. You roll your eyes at his smug look but take a sip anyway.
Once everyone is done eating, you all stand and make your way into the museum lobby, the kids already chattering about what they want to see.
"Okay, you guys are free to roam but please, please, please remember that you're representing not only the school but also me. Be respectful and kind, and please don't act like you've never been in public before, okay? Go, be free." You say before the kids split off into their little groups with their obligatory activity in hand. Ellie stays near Joel, only a little shy, until Kayla turns around suddenly and waves her on.
"Ellie, c'mon!" She says. Ellie takes a few steps in her direction before turning to look back at Joel.
"Go. I'll be okay." He says.
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I'm sure. Now go. Have fun." She doesn't need any more encouragement after that and skitters off with the rest of the kids, leaving you and Joel alone in the atrium.
"She's doing really well." You tell him even though he can clearly see for himself.
"Thanks to you."
"All I did was give her a push."
"Take the credit. You deserve it." He says, his lips pulling into that award-winning smile.
You fall into silence as you walk through the different galleries, Joel never too far behind you. Sometimes, he'll start at the opposite end of the room and work his way down until you meet in the middle, making a deliberate effort to bump your shoulder or hand as he passes. Other times, he'll stay right next to you, and, for some reason, it doesn't bother you. You like being so close to him and feeling his eyes work over the piece like it's a puzzle he doesn't quite know how to work. When he can't stand the quiet anymore, he'll whisper a question to you about the artist or the history, his breathing fanning out across your neck and making the hair there stand on end.
After moving through a big part of the museum together, you and Joel end up at the same painting as the dull hum of voices fills the space between you. You smile to yourself, practically hearing him trying to find something to say as he stands there and observes how the lines of bright colors follow each other. Some are stark and almost resemble lightning in how they move around the canvas, but others are muted, blended together with careful precision and patience. It's hard to imagine what West Texas could've been like in 1953, but this makes it a little easier.
"What's this one supposed to mean?" Joel mumbles, leaning ever so conspicuously into you.
"I can't tell you." You mumble back, and he finally turns to look at you head-on. You meet his eyes with an amused smile, and he shakes his head at you.
"You're really not gonna tell me?"
"I can't tell you what art is supposed to mean to you. I can't tell anyone that."
"But, you're a teacher."
"If you're asking me for an art history lesson, I'd be happy to help, but that's about all I can do for you."
"'S cruel and unusual punishment."
"If art and culture are cruel and unusual punishment, why'd you sign up to chaperone?"
"Maybe I wanted to see my friend," he says, bumping you with his shoulder, and you laugh a little too hard. "What? We can't be friends? Is there a school policy against that, too?"
"Nope, no school policy. I just," You pause and revel in how enraptured he looks at every movement, pause, and breath you take. "I already have friends, so..."
"Oh, and you're 'fraid of bein' too popular?"
"Famously." You say, and he chuckles next to you. You go back to staring at the painting quietly with him so close you can feel his body heat. You're the one to break this time, knocking him with your shoulder to get his attention again. You didn't need to. When you glance at him, you see his focus is on you, not the painting. "It's Texas. Canyon, to be more precise. Up by Amarillo where there's nothing but cattle and desert. O'Keeffe taught out there for a few years and wanted to paint something that showed how big the West is. It's supposed to make you feel like you're two feet tall and seeing the sky for the first time. For her, it might've been the first time in a long time she'd gotten to see a sunset that big. So, she painted it so other people could enjoy sunsets like that. It's like a love letter."
"How d'you do that?" He asks once you're finished explaining, and you furrow your eyebrows.
"Do what?"
"Make little things seem so beautiful." He answers easily, like you asked him what color the sky is. You don't know what to say. What are you supposed to say to something like that?
"'S just what art does." You shrug and break away from his gaze to look at the painting, if only to not feel him staring into your soul.
"No, it's what you do to it. 'S why those kids love you so damn much. You make everythin' feel like a masterpiece, even the little things." He's not flirting. He's not trying to persuade you to do one thing over another. He's genuine and heartfelt. You swear you would start crying if you had a little less sleep. You take a deep breath and lean into him for half a second, just enough to feel his body against yours, before standing upright again.
"Thank you."
"It's what friends are for," he says, leaning into you in return. "I should make sure they haven't seized the museum or anythin'."
"Oh, I can do it. You're a guest."
"And you work too hard," he stops you. "Take a break and enjoy what you love. The world won't end if you take some time for yourself." If ever there were awards to be given out for sweet talking, you think Joel Miller would win all of them.
"Okay," you say, and he walks behind you to move on to the next section. "You really wanna be my friend?" You ask before he can fully pass behind you, looking at him over your shoulder. He smiles devastatingly, light sparkling in his eyes, and nods.
"I really wanna be your friend." He says softly, his voice low and rumbling in his chest. He lingers for a second or two before finally making his way to the group of students, leaving you to scrutinize the painting you've been staring at for God knows how long.
The day crawls to an uneventful close, with you forcing all the students to take a picture in front of the museum for the yearbook. Joel takes your phone out of your hand and all but pushes you in the photo, and your students lovingly welcome you into their little group. In exchange, you grab Joel's phone and take cute pictures of him and Ellie for their own memories. They smile almost identically, and Ellie makes a fake annoyed face when Joel kisses her temple. Your fingers brush against each other when you hand it back, and for a second, you can feel the callouses from his job. It feels like unlocking a new piece of him or a new quirk.
Too bad this isn't a date. Too bad nothing can ever come of this. Too bad you had to meet this way. Too bad. Too bad.
The ride home is quiet and full of the clinking of backpacks and new souvenirs. When you get to the school, parents are waiting in the parking lot with fast food dinners and excited ears to hear all about their days. Almost everyone immediately slinks home, tired and happy, before you can even get close to the school doors. Almost everyone. Joel and Ellie help you carry your backpack and some things you bought for teaching purposes at the museum into your classroom. The school is virtually deserted, and you return to your room to find all the lamps flipped off and mostly positive notes from the sub.
"Dad, what are we gonna do for dinner?" Ellie groans as you sit in your chair and open your email quickly before you can pack up the rest of your stuff. Their dinner debate becomes background noise as you find your inbox full of annoyed messages from Dalton's parents, coaches, and even Principal Martinez regarding his grades. Under all that vitriol sits Henry's half-read message about his gallery opening, and you feel the perfect bubble of your day burst around you. Joel and Ellie seem to realize it because they're both quiet when you tune back into their conversation, and you turn in your chair to look at them.
"Are you okay?" Ellie asks, and you snap out of it, putting on your best teacher everything-is-fine face.
"Oh, yeah. Sorry. Just some emails. It's not important." You wave her off, but Joel isn't so easily convinced. He thinks for a second before pulling his keys out of his pocket and handing them to Ellie.
"Go get some practice driving." He says, jerking his head toward the door, and Ellie's eyes light up.
"Really?!"
"Just bring the car to the front, and don't hit anything!" He says, but she's already taken off with the keys and her stuff in an excited whirlwind. You laugh at her enthusiasm, and Joel leans against one of the desks near you, crossing his arms in front of him. "What's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong."
"Your whole face fell when you opened that computer."
"It's nothing."
"If we're gonna be friends, you're gonna have to tell me if somethin's wrong otherwise I can't help you." He says, and you fight a smile.
"I don't know how you're gonna help me with this one." You say. He bumps your foot with his and gives you a pleading look. Big brown eyes on men like him should be illegal, you think.
"Talk to me." He begs quietly, and you take a deep breath.
"When I was in college, I dated this guy. He was an artist, too, and we were like the little power couple of our program. Things ended kinda badly and abruptly, and I hadn't heard from him since graduation until last week when he invited me to his gallery opening. I really don't want to go alone because, honestly, I haven't been able to get anything showcased in years, and I'm embarrassed. Plus, he broke my heart and made me feel like shit for a few years." You can't stop the words from falling from you once the dam is broken, but Joel doesn't flinch.
"Well, you've got friends to go with, right?"
"I do," you say. "But I want to invite you."
"Oh." He says, seemingly unintentionally.
"Oh." You repeat. "You can say no. I just thought... since we're friends and all now."
"I just... I don't..." he struggles before finally giving in to what he wants to say, what you think he's wanted to say all day. "I don't think I'm smart enough to go to somethin' like that. I don't know anythin' about art. I don't even know how to dress for those kinda things."
"Nobody knows anything about art. Not really, at least. Especially not Henry."
"You do."
"Then I'll stick with you all night and feed you lines about composition or some shit," you say. "And you just wear a nice shirt and some slacks. Maybe a suit jacket if you're feeling snazzy. It's really not as big a deal as people make it seem. We'll go, drink wine, say something about the colors, play nice, and then we'll leave. I'll have you home by 9:30. Earlier if you really hate it that much." He rolls his neck like he's rattling something around in his head or thinking about your offer, and all you can do is watch him and the way his Adam's apple pressing against the delicate skin of his throat. You're convinced he's gonna say no.
"Are you asking me on a date?" He finally asks, and you laugh.
"Not a date."
"Sounds like a date. You even promised to have me home to my girl at a reasonable time."
"Fine, it's a friend date."
"A friend date?" He raises his eyebrows at you, and you nod.
"It's perfectly normal to go on friend dates, Miller. You're just behind on the times."
"Seems like I am. Maybe you can bring me up to speed during the gallery opening?" He says, and your shoulders drop in relief. "I'll pick you up if you agree to help me not look like an idiot."
"You won't look like an idiot."
"Not with you there, I won't." He says, and you want to laugh, but you also want to tear up a little at his kindness. It's been a long week.
"Thank you, Joel. Really. I owe you." You say, and he nods.
"'S my pleasure," he says. For a minute, you two just stare at each other in your empty classroom like teenagers with an obvious crush. You think that's what you feel like. You think that's all you'll ever be able to feel for him. "I should go. I've got an impatient teenager waitin' for me."
"Yeah. Go get her some dinner, and I'll text you the details." You say as you stand to walk him out. He stands to his full height, opens his arms, and approaches you. You didn't think you were hugging territory, but as his arms wrapped around you, you couldn't help but hug him back.
"Goodnight." He says into your hair, lingering for another moment before disappearing as fast as he appeared.
"Goodnight," you say. With that, he starts walking to the open door with a smile stuck to his face. "Hey, Joel," you call before he can step over the threshold, and he turns around to look at you. "Art is for everyone, and even if it wasn't, you're more than smart enough to enjoy it."
"Yes, ma'am." He says with a half-salute and a wink before stepping out of your classroom. You let yourself rest against your desk and take a deep breath. Finally, you let yourself pull out your phone and read the rest of Henry's email detailing the time and place of the gallery.
I hope you can come. It would really mean a lot to me. I miss talking to you and even though things ended the way they did, I still love you.
See you soon,
Henry Hall
"Fuck that."

You seem to be on neutral ground about the ship war (I try to do the same) and you also seem relatively well caught up on all 911 news. So I wanted to ask, do you think Buddie might actually still go canon?
Personally I don't think it's likely for several reasons, but a lot of other fans seem pretty convinced it's still on the table maybe even soon.
when it comes to shipping itself i am pretty neutral, yeah, when it comes to fandom behaviour... idk i have a bunch of people blocked and muted on both sides, so make of that what you will.
i will say that though that i personally have not seen death threats and slurs thrown around that much on one side, while on the other it's... yeah. we all saw how the common talking point is either "well he's a bad person so i am clearly a good person if i wish terrible suffering on him" or "we've always been hateful, but it's just for fun so you should all lighten up" and i'm not exactly down being associated with people like that.
the way i see it is that Tim wanted to (maybe still wants to) take the show into the direction of canon buddie eventually, (but this is where i remind everyone that we might get 7 more seasons or s8 might be the last, cuz you never really know)
i think he was setting things in motion for a lot of different things this season and that was supposed to be one of them, especially if you go by the interviews and how he talked about just doing what he wanted to do, without letting the fans' interpretations get to him... however that was before he was receiving death threats over a 3-minute cut scene that would've cost thousands of dollars in licensing fees to release, according to him.
it was before bt gained quite a sizeable fanbase, before people started to lean into his accidental invisible string theory, which is frankly a writing goldmine to stumble upon. he was incredibly excited for the bi Buck storyline according to Oliver and that storyline will forever include Tommy, as both Tim and Oliver mentioned as well (Oliver going as far as saying he hopes the character stays around regardless of where the relationship ends up going, because Tommy is now a core part of who Buck is).
certain part of the fanbase seems to think they know the actors personally and know exactly what they think and how they feel about each other and the storyline
(see: people saying that Oliver is upset about where the bi Buck storyline is going, even though he literally didn't comment on it at all since he's been on hiatus and now isn't contractually obligated to promote the show and give interviews.
also claiming that Oliver doesn't like Lou which may or may not be the case, though he only ever said majorly positive things about him, so did the rest of the cast and Tim. but even so, do they think Oliver is such a bad actor that he can't be a professional and still work with him? genuine question. it's a part of the grownup world to work with people you don't like, but actors aren't their characters and whatever Oliver feels about Lou, Buck still likes Tommy, so that's the end of that discussion imo)
anyway, my point is that Tim and Oliver and even Ryan to some extent were talking about not giving in the hysteria of buddie fans and just keeping the story on the track they want to set it on and only going into that direction if it makes sense for the characters and is a truthful way of telling their stories.
again, that was before the overwhelming aggression, general homophobia (which, wow), death threats made against Tim and Lou and (seemingly) chasing Lou off of social media.
i'd say it all depends on Tim and if he feels petty enough and enjoys writing for bt enough to take it away or if he wants to go with his original vision (which, obviously i don't know him or what goes on in his head, but i personally get the sense that canon buddie was the direction he wanted to go into)
all in all, it's all speculation, but the behaviour shown by some people in the fandom is truly disgusting and disturbing and i really don't think it's justified over some fictional men dating or not dating.
and as a sidenote: acting entitled towards a queer ship becoming canon is the dumbest fucking thing in fandom history. you do know that the ship that started it all, that appeared in countless media over the last 60+ years is still not canon, right? what makes you think that we "deserve" canon buddie? especially based on everything i just outlined above.

9-1-1 REACTION
Dearly beloved, we’re gathered here today to discuss the latest episode of 9-1-1. This reaction is for the season 7, sixth episode “There Goes the Groom” which originally aired May 2, 2024. The episode was written by Tim Minear and Nicole Barraza Kiem and directed by John J. Gray. Just a word of warning, this reaction will contain spoilers. You have been warned …
Tumblr media
“He’s Tubbs, I’m Tubbs and this isn’t my puke, I don’t think.” – Eddie Diaz to Maddie Buckley
Tumblr media
We start things off at a gorgeous venue where Maddie and Chimney’s wedding is to take place. We see Bobby and Athena looking restless and John and Anne Lee sitting with Jee-Yun. We then see Maddie freaking out because the boys (Chimney, Buck, and Eddie) are 30 minutes late. Phillip Buckley (played by Gregory Harrison) tries calling Buck’s phone but keeps getting his voicemail. Hen rushes in to tell Maddie that Buck’s car has arrived. When Maddie asks if Chimney is in his tux, Hen tells her she didn’t get a good look. Buck and Eddie arrive looking like they’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards. Eddie’s covered in someone else’s puke (gross!!!) and inexplicably missing his shirt. This season is all about giving us what we need and what we need is Ryan Guzman shirtless. Maddie asks them about Chimney. Buck tells her that it’s complicated.
Cue title card.
Tumblr media
We get a flashback to the bachelor party Buck organized for Chimney. It should be pointed out that Chimney doesn’t want a bachelor party, something he’s intimated to Buck numerous times. I must say, the venue Buck chose to host the festivities was really cool-looking. There were all these neon signs on the walls and twinkly lights galore. It reminded me of a space where you’d play laser tag. Buck and Eddie are dressed in matching pastel Miami Vice-esque suits and Buck is being very fussy about everything. Tommy (played by Lou Ferrigno Jr.) arrives dressed in a black T-shirt and jeans and Buck nags him about not sticking to the 80’s theme. I’m gonna assume that Tommy is in his late-30’s and therefore Buck should be lucky he even came in the first place because the thought of leaving my house on a weeknight to go to a bachelor party does not sound the least bit appealing. Eddie offers Tommy a drink and he tells him he’s on standby which for all you kiddies out there who don’t know how jobs work, standby means that you’re technically not scheduled for the shift, but you have to be ready in case you get called in to work.
Tumblr media
“You put that back, right now.” – Evan “Buck” Buckley to Ravi Panikkar
Tommy does give us a hint about Chimney’s nickname when he reminds Eddie that he knew Chimney before he was Chimney. I love the whole mythos surrounding the name and I hope by the end of the series we finally get an explanation. I also like how sassy Tommy is in this scene. Hen, Karen, and Ravi arrive but our guest of honor is missing. While Buck calls Chimney’s cell, everyone else looks bored out of their mind. Buck asks Hen to call Chimney since he’s more likely to answer her call, but she declines. She reminds Buck that Chimney told him he didn’t want a bachelor party, but Buck tells her he didn’t. We then get a small scene where Chimney doesn’t mince words when he tells Buck he does not want a bachelor party. It should be noted that Eddie is present for the exchange and yet he is the one to suggest to Buck that they dress as Crockett and Tubbs from Miami Vice. Now, this is my one pet peeve about Eddie. He always indulges Buck and then kind of absolves himself of responsibility when things go awry.
Back in the not-so-distant future, people start to leave. Buck begs Hen and Karen to stay but they tell him they have to get home to Denny and Mara. Ravi is the next to leave followed by Tommy who gets a text to report to work. Buck is so disappointed to see him go, and I love how he tells Tommy to be safe before he leaves. Eddie is the only one left and when a group of young women wander into their party space, they decide to salvage the rest of the night by turning up with a bunch of strangers. Now, prior to the episode airing, Tim Minear announced that a previously advertised scene involving Buck and Eddie singing karaoke was cut due to the episode being too long. This led to more than a few irate fans, mostly Buddie shippers, sending a barrage of tweets and comments to the series co-creator voicing their frustration with the decision to remove the scene. Some even accused the writers of queer baiting which is really dumb when you consider that one of the characters is actually queer so what baiting is even involved. I get being upset because your favorite pairing on the show is not being featured as prominently as you would like but I find it absurd that someone would then go to Beyonce’s internet to harass the writers and the cast about said decision. I find it disgusting and I wish a certain ship would realize that certain writers would take them more seriously if they weren’t acting like a bunch of coked up baboons. But I digress.
Tumblr media
Buck and Eddie wake up the next morning in a completely trashed hotel room. The place is wrecked. Seriously, who is going to pay for all the damages? I’m honestly surprised by both of their behavior. Especially Eddie’s. He’s usually the more level-headed of the two but it’s odd to see him exhibiting such frat boy behavior. Perhaps he needed to blow of some steam. Anywho, they go to check on Chimney but only find his tux. Oh dear!
Buck and Eddie wake up the morning in a completely trashed hotel room. Seriously, who is going to have to pay for all the damages? I’m extremely surprised by Eddie’s behavior.
“I am 9-1-1.” – Maddie Buckley to Margaret Buckley
Tumblr media
Back in the present, Maddie tries calling Chimney herself. When he doesn’t pick up, Hen asks if she has him on Find My Friend, a feature that will send current or last location to anyone you choose to share it with. She sees that Chimney is on Century Park East but wonders why he’s there.
We next see a guy named Jeff (played by Khorri Ellis) knocking on the driver’s side window of Chimney’s vehicle. Chimney is inside looking a little worse for wear. He’s sweaty and bleary-eyed. He looks like he has the flu. He also seems out of it. Chimney rolls down the window and Jeff asks him if he’s okay. He tells Jeff that he feels like he should be somewhere. Jeff asks him his name and Chimney says his name is Howard. Chimney says he needs to leave but Jeff, rightfully, tells him he is no condition to be driving. He offers to drive Chimney where he needs to go and when Chimney steps outside the vehicle, Jeff gets in, chucks Chimney’s cell out the window, and drives off leaving Chimney stranded.
FOUR DAYS AGO
“I promise to never put her in a position where she feels she needs to stab me to death.” – Howard “Chimney” Han to John and Anne Lee
Tumblr media
We see Chimney with John and Anne Lee (played by Kelvin Han Yee and Freda Foh Shen) practicing Jesa, a Korean ceremony in which one pays tribute to a loved one on the anniversary of their death. I love any time we get to see Chimney with the Lees because while he has been able to make amends with his father, John and Anne Lee are his real parents and Kevin Lee, their son, is his brother. Chimney and the Lees have dinner together and Anne asks Chimney if he is excited about the wedding. When Chimney goes to respond, his hand starts shaking and he drops his food. John jokingly asks if he’s nervous, but Chimney assures him that he doesn’t have the jitters. He is, however, feeling jittery and tells them he has a headache he can’t seem to shake. Anne offers him aspirin, but Chimney tells her that he will be fine after he says, “I do”.
John asks him about what happened to him and Maddie’s plan to have a simple ceremony at their home. Chimney tells him that the plan has changed. Phillip and Maddie Buckley are flying out for the wedding and have offered to foot the bill for the venue since they were not at Maddie’s first wedding. Anne says they waited to attend the right wedding. Chimney makes a dark joke about Maddie having to kill her first husband Doug and the Lees laugh. Chimney says he looking forward to having a traditional wedding; however, there is one tradition he is not looking forward to and that’s having a bachelor party.
Tumblr media
Back in the present, Chimney sees his phone lying in the middle of a busy road. We see him walk into traffic to retrieve it and he almost gets hit by a bus. The driver opens the door and Chimney boards the bus. When she pulls off, the wheels of the bus crush Chimney’s phone.
We head over to the wedding venue where everyone except for Chimney is gathered. It was so fun seeing all of the main and secondary cast in the same scene together in their formal wear. Athena gets a call from Officer Williams (played by Chris Wu) who has located Chimney’s phone but neither Chimney nor his car is with it. Athena asks him to put out a BOLO for Chimney and his car. Maddie asks Officer Williams if there are any traffic cameras nearby and he says there are a few.
Tumblr media
Maddie, Hen, and Josh go to the dispatch center. Maddie says she will check the Century Park East traffic cam footage to see if she can find Chimney and Josh will check the call logs to see if there have been any calls from that vicinity in the last 12 hours.  Sue sees them and asks if this is a runaway bride situation. Hen tells her they are looking for a runaway groom.
Tumblr media
Back on the bus, Chimney is clearly not in his right mind because he is hallucinating Doug Kendall (played by Brian Hallisay). Doug sits next to him, and Chimney asks if he knows him. Doug says that Chimney may forget everything else, but he could never forget him. Doug is wearing a Santa hat and has a gift he says is from the both of them to Maddie. He opens the bag and pulls out of knife which he uses to stab Chimney in the side. Even though I knew that Doug wasn’t real, that didn’t make this scene any less troubling to watch. Doug twists the blade and disappears leaving a confused Chimney alone on the bus.
“Maybe I got too caught up in the dream wedding. I was so excited about marrying him.” – Maddie Buckley to Hen Wilson
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, reviews the camera footage and sees Chimney walking into traffic. She sees him almost get hit by a bus and then board said bus. Josh says the bus is a metro bus and asks if there’s any way they can see the bus ID number. Maddie writes down the number and gives it to Sue who tells her she will call the MTA. We then see Chimney get dropped off in an unfamiliar part of town. We switch back to dispatch where Maddie and Hen are reviewing the footage from inside the bus. I love seeing these two work together because out of all of our characters, these two love Chimney the most. Maddie notices that Chimney’s talking to himself, and Hen thinks he may be hallucinating. Maddie wonders if this is some sort of delayed reaction to his brain injury from back in season one or if he’s having some sort of breakdown. Hen reminds Maddie that when Chimney gets stressed, he deflects. Maddie wonders if Chimney marrying her is the thing that’s stressing him out, but Hen quickly lets her know that marrying her is the one thing he wasn’t stressed about. She tells Maddie that the only thing she’s sure of at the moment is that Chimney can’t wait to marry her.
Josh returns and tells them that he talked to the bus driver who says that Chimney seemed a little out of it but otherwise normal. The bus driver also said that Chimney kept talking about being late for work. Hen points out that the bus Chimney was on wouldn’t go anywhere near the firehouse and wonders where he could have been dropped off at. Speaking of Chimney, we see him standing out in front of a building. He talks to a man named Carl (played by Exie Booker) and asks him about Skinny Bob’s K-Town Karaoke. For those of you who recall the episode “Chimney Begins” that is the name of the bar where Chimney used to work prior to joining the 118. Carl tells Chimney the bar burned down which we saw in the very same episode. Chimney has flashes of the night the bar burned down but he can’t quite piece together the memory. The make matters worse, he starts to see Doug again only this time his future wife’s dead husband is covered in blood. Chimney freaks out and runs away.
“”We’re gonna find him, Maddie.” – Athena Grant to Maddie Buckley
Tumblr media
Athena checks in with Maddie and Hen and tells them she talked to Carl who says that Chimney looked agitated and feverish. Carl also told Athena that Chimney thought that the bakery where Carl works was a karaoke bar. Athena tells them that she has some officers searching the area and she and Bobby plan to stick around just in case Chimney comes back. She assures Maddie that they will find Chimney. Josh reminds them that Chimney’s bachelor party was at a bachelor party; however, Maddie points out that the bachelor party was the night before. Sue asks if it is possible Chimney doesn’t know what day it is. Hen chimes in and says she’s not sure if he even knows what year it is. She pulls up an article from 2005 on her phone which shows that Chimney saved a lot of people by getting them out of the karaoke bar when it caught on fire. Maddie wonders if he’s forgotten 20 years of his life and Hen says he might not be the only one.
TWO WEEKS AGO
“You don’t have to worry about this. It’s all taken care of.” – Evan Buckley to Maddie Buckley
Tumblr media
We get another flashback scene, this one involving the 118 responding to an emergency where Thom DeSalvo (played by Brandon Bales) is trapped inside an air duct. Buck broaches the topic of Chimney’s bachelor party and the latter volunteers himself to go into the air duct while the rest go inside the room directly beneath where Thom is trapped. Chimney locates Thom and checks his vitals. Thom tells him that his heart is racing, and he has chest pains. He then sneezes directly into Chimney’s face. Chimney tells Thom to relax but he says he cannot relax because he just saw his fiancée having sex with another man. I kind of felt bad for Thom because he is truly heartbroken although if I were his friend, I wouldn’t have advised that he go spy on them. Meanwhile, Bobby, Hen, Eddie, and Buck are able to knock out a portion of the ceiling and lower Thom down. As he is loaded into an ambulance, Hen talks to the woman Thom said was his fiancée and discovers that she is, in fact, not his fiancée. She says that Thom is her ex-husband and that they’ve been divorced for 17 months.
Tumblr media
Back in the present, Buck brings Maddie a change of clothes and Eddie brings food. Buck notices that Hen is on the phone, and he asks Maddie who she is speaking with. Maddie tells him that Hen is checking on the patient Thom from their emergency two weeks ago.  Eddie is surprised the guy is still in the hospital since he wasn’t even hurt. Maddie tells them that Hen thinks that Chimney is exhibiting the same behaviors as Thom. Hen announces that Thom had viral encephalitis that he picked up while in Central America. Buck points out that Chimney was in close quarters with Thom. Eddie suggests they all get checked to see if they have it. Hen points out that Chimney was the only one who had direct exposure to Thom. Josh asks her what the prognosis is and Hen says that if Chimney were in a hospital it would be good but every minute that passes without treatment, the swelling in his brain gets worse. If Chimney does not get medical attention ASAP, he is going to suffer permanent brain damage and most likely die. Maddie asks her about Thom Desalvo’s status and Hen tells her that he died earlier that morning.
“He may not remember who he is but he is who he is.” – Athena Grant to Bobby Nash, Evan “Buck” Buckley, and Eddie Diaz
Tumblr media
We see Chimney wandering the streets of Koreatown in a state of delirium. He nearly gets hit by a car and the driver, who is either under the influence or experiencing a medical emergency, plows into a farmers’ market, hurting a lot of people in the process. The paramedic switch is flipped in Chimney, and he springs into action. He tells a woman to call 9-1-1 and tends to the driver who is having a seizure. It’s amazing that Chimney is able to stay focused to help everyone, even while in the midst of his own medical emergency. This scene reminds me of when Mateo on Lone Star jumped into action during the dust storm back in season two.
Athena, Bobby, Buck, and Eddie arrive on the scene of the accident and Bobby reports that a man fitting Chimney’s description was on the scene triaging the area. Eddie thinks this means that Chimney knows who he is but Bobby quickly adds that Chimney told one of the witnesses he works at a karaoke bar. Athena sees this as a good sign regardless because Chimney is tapping into something that is so natural to him which is helping others. Bobby says that Chimney was last seen 30 minutes ago so he suggests that they canvass the area to look for him. Athena says she will get the police involved in the search as well.
Tumblr media
Buck strikes off on his own to look for Chimney and he does end up at the spot where Chimney is at; unfortunately, Chimney is passed out, so he does not hear Buck calling for him. Chimney receives another visit from Doug who tries to convince him that Maddie left him. Chimney remembers the video Maddie left him before she left for Boston. Doug tells Chimney he is sick in the head and that he screwed around with a married woman. Chimney then sees himself lying on the ground after he got stabbed by Doug back in season two. Doug tells him to stop fighting and to go to sleep. Chimney eventually passes out and sees a white light.
“Howie, you got to get up, man.” – Kevin Lee to Howard “Chimney” Han
Tumblr media
Now this is the part where I started to tear up in the episode. A man dressed in turnout gear steps out of the light and Chimney sees that it’s Kevin Lee (played by James Chen). It is in this moment I realized that we never saw Chimney grieve his fallen brother. Chimney starts to cry upon seeing Kevin. Kevin tells him to get up and Chimney says he is so tired and that his head is hurting. He wants to rest but Kevin says he cannot. He tells Chimney he is sick and needs medical attention. Chimney touches Kevin’s face and tells him he misses him and that he’s glad he’s okay. Kevin tells Chimney that he will be okay, but he needs to get up. He drags Chimney to his feet and tells him that Doug was never there. Chimney says that Kevin is there, and Kevin says that Chimney invited him. Kevin tells him all he needs to do is get home.
“We always find our way back to each other somehow.” – Maddie Buckley to Howard “Chimney” Han
Tumblr media
Chimney ends up at the Lees house asking for Kevin Lee. Anne tells him that Kevin is dead. Chimney starts crying again and finally collapses onto the floor. He wakes up in the hospital where Maddie is at his bedside. She asks him if he knows where he is at and he shakes his head. She asks him if he knows who he is and he apologizes for missing their wedding. Maddie starts crying and now I’m crying, too. Maddie is happy he remembers. Jee-Yun runs into the room with Phillip Buckley close on her heels. Chimney tells Maddie he was trying to get back to her and Jee-Yun the whole time. Chimney asks Maddie if she will marry him, and she says she will the minute they get out of the hospital. He asks her when that will be, and she says the doctors say it will be three weeks. Chimney tells her he doesn’t want to wait that long. He doesn’t want to wait another minute.
We next see Maddie back in her wedding dress. I must say, the viewers give Phillip and Margaret Buckley a hard time based on their previous relationships with Maddie and Buck, but I have to say it was so nice seeing the Buckley family together and on the same page. Back in Chimney’s room, John and Anne Lee are helping him into get into his tuxedo jacket. John tells Chimney that Kevin is smiling right now, and Chimney agrees. Okay, cue more tears. While Jennifer Love Hewitt sings a cover of “Islands in the Stream” which is the song Maddie and Chimney sang karaoke to, we see Maddie being walked down the hospital corridor by Phillip while flower girl Jee-Yun walks ahead of them. Phillip leads Maddie into Chimney’s room and Bobby officiates their wedding which feels so appropriate. They exchange vows and rings and finally kiss in front of their family and friends. I loved the moment when Bobby is talking about the significance of the rings, and he looks over at Athena. It’s just a reminder of how perfect the couples on this show are.
“Thanks, Tommy. It looks like you were … busy.” – Howard “Chimney” Han to Tommy Kinard
Tumblr media
Buck gets a text and leaves the room while everyone is applauding Chimney and Maddie’s union. He makes it to the emergency room just in time to see Tommy walk through the sliding doors. Tommy is covered in soot and ash and immediately apologizes for being late. He tells Buck that the fire he just fought was a beast. Buck calls him a beast and kisses him. Now this kiss was an upgrade from the kiss two episodes ago which is already a great kiss. It was a great first kiss. With this kiss, the passion was turned all the way up to an 11. Seriously, these two have such amazing chemistry and I love how things are gradually escalating. I do love that Buck is the one who initiates the kiss because it shows that he is all in on their romance.
Buck and Tommy head back to Chimney’s room aka the wedding and Tommy immediately apologizes for missing the wedding. He congratulates Chimney and Maddie and Chimney thanks him. There’s this amazing moment when Chimney puts two and two together and realizes that Buck and Tommy are together. He is immediately accepting as I knew he would be and Hen whispers to Karen that it’s about damn time and of course Hen already knew because Hen is very perceptive. We get other reactions as well. Eddie looks both proud and happy for his best friend and Margaret gives her husband Phillip a look that says, does that mean what I think it means and Phillip looks content. As I mentioned before, the Buckleys get a bad rep by the fans but I am choosing to see this as a good sign of things to come.
Tumblr media
We end the episode with Maddie and Chimney. She asks him how he is feeling, and he tells her he is feeling right at home. She jokes and asks if that’s because every significant moment of their lives happens in a hospital. He tells her that he feels at home because they are together. He looks around the room and says it’s not the most romantic place for their honeymoon. Maddie says there’s worst and at the same time they say upside down cruise ships. Ha! Maddie looks at her ring and says she can’t believe they are married. She says it’s the wedding of her dreams and Chimney says it’s a day he’ll never forget. Chimney asks Maddie if Buck and Tommy were a thing before his amnesia and she says yes. He says that means his memory is back. In the last moment of the episode. Chimney asks Maddie about the meaning behind his name and then it fades to black. I guess we will have to wait to find out how Chimney got his infamous nickname.
Tumblr media
So, that’s our episode and what an amazing episode it was. Looking back at the promo for “There Goes the Groom”, Tim Minear and Company really had me convinced that we were getting an homage to The Hangover. I was not expecting this episode to be as heartbreaking and heartwarming as it was. Shout out to Kenneth Choi who deserves his flowers. He not only delivered some of the most powerful moments of the episode, looking back, Kenneth has been constantly delivering since season one. The scene where he talks to Kevin shattered my heart into pieces only to superglue it back. Chimney is usually the comic relief of the show and it’s often been said that comedians are some of the most unhappy people on the planet. Who knew he was holding onto so much grief. In many ways this episode reminds me of last season’s “In Another Life” where Buck learns just how valuable he is to those around him. Chimney has a similar journey in this episode and thankfully he’s walking away from this horrific ordeal knowing just how loved he is by his family, his friends, and most importantly his wife.
The Madney wedding wasn’t what I was expecting but it was better than anything I could’ve ever imagined. One thing I think the writers did well with this wedding that I wished they did with TK and Carlos’ wedding over on Lone Star is the joy aspect. Everyone in that hospital room was filled with love and happiness despite everything that had transpired. I love how once a season we get these moments where the cast is all together, celebrating, and it’s the rare occasion we get to see the actors come through their characters. This is a cast that loves each other and it’s so apparent. It’s one of the many reasons I love this show. But, I digress. Maddie and Chimney’s wedding was absolutely beautiful and had we not gone through all the drama and tragedy, we would’ve missed out on Bobby being the officiant. It makes total sense that our fearless leader would be the one to marry Chimney and Maddie. I look forward to what happens next for Chimney and Maddie. These two have endured so much trauma and heartache and I pray the writers leave them alone for awhile.
Tumblr media
Lastly, I have to talk about the moment that has set both Twitter and Tumblr ablaze albeit for different reasons. Many have doubted and still doubt the legitimacy of Buck and Tommy’s burgeoning relationship, but I think this episode made it abundantly clear these two are here to stay at least for the rest of this season. I don’t know what plans Tim Minear has for these two characters but I love the slow burn of it all. Sometimes I’ll be sitting, doing nothing, and it’ll dawn on me that Evan “Buck” Buckley is bisexual, and he is dating a kind, patient, and extremely hot firefighter named Tommy Kinard. And maybe it’s my imagination but this is the happiest Buck has ever looked. The smile he gives after he comes back to Chimney’s room with Tommy is something I will rewatch this episode over and over again just to see again. Oliver and Lou’s chemistry is off the charts and that shouldn’t suggest that there’s anything wrong with Oliver and Ryan’s chemistry. I think Oliver has chemistry with everyone he appears on screen with. And, as the mostly one-sided war rages on between Buddie shippers and BuckTommy/Tevan/Kinley shippers, I think at the end of the day, the most important thing to remember is that Buck is bisexual, he is (mostly) out, and he is happy. We have seen this man endure emotional and physical turmoil since episode one. I’m happy that he gets to be happy and that’s what matters. I cannot wait to see what happens next. Until next time …

Hi 👋 can I say how much enjoy your blog? reading your opinion it's always a delight to me. And you are never rude so that's always a plus when I follow someone here on Tumblr.
So when you say the writers could truly decide to develop Tommy as a character in which circumstances do you think this could happen? (For me that ship sailed already but it's interesting to think about it) what would need to happen for the writers to make this choice and with what purpose?
I actually don't think LFJ is that bad of an actor (I actually enjoy him on swat) my opinion of him as a person is a whole other issue, but for some reason his acting felt flat on 911, like he's just there you know?
Hope you have a wonderful day today 💞
This is actually very nice, thank you, I appreciate you saying this!
Okay, I will tell you something I don't spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to incorporate Tommy because I just want this to be over with, I don't think he's worth the chaos he created so I don't try to figure out how to make him stay. But there are ways when you look at the fact that he has other openings to the storyline besides Buck. We have the friendship with Eddie that was completely written off after he got together with Buck and we also have the previous connection to the 118. Personally, I think the easiest way to incorporate him is through Eddie but the more effective way would be through Hen and Chim, it would be doing something that makes it clear that his relationship with them improved, yk? It's not just friendly, we worked together and I'm polite type thing, like actually evolving it into something that "oh we're friends now. They've been through shit, we acknowledge the fact that Tommy helped create the toxic environment and we have Tommy actively doing something to make amends, Hen and Chim seal of approval or whatever and then you keep developing his relationship with Buck in whatever way they want. But the thing is that only works if they do like a full 180 of his personality, yk? Like he would have to suddenly become extremely genuine for it to actually work with the general audience when you consider everything that happened and the way that he was used, in the second half of the season.
Because the thing is I don't think the problem is Lou's acting, at least not all of it, he was not doing a lot but the script that wasn't doing him any favors, if you look at him during the cruise and in 704 he doesn't fall as flat as he does during 709 and 710, so it's not fully a Lou's problem, it's probably something about the way that they want Tommy to come off because if they actually needed Tommy to come off a different way they would do different things with the script too, the delivery makes Tommy look a certain way, but what he's saying would contribute to it anyway, Lou's not that bad of an actor as everyone keeps saying he is, if he was 704 wouldn't work and 704 does work, so the thing is I think that they didn't plan on having Tommy sticking around all that much or at all for the rest of the season, and I think that's the main reason that 704 Tommy is so different from 709/10 Tommy because they realized that they had to make him look a certain way because people were rooting for the relationship and they didn't want people to root for the relationship. It all comes down to them actually putting effort into the character as a whole but the only effective way to make him part of the family is making him part of the family literally. It is dealing with the issues that come from his relationship with Chim and Hen. But I also don't think that the show's going to go there because they made a point to show us the deleted scene that shows the Hen doesn't trust him and that he's not interested in her approval so they filmed that scene, and they know that if they incorporate Tommy with more than Buck then Tommy starts existing in the plot and they avoided that at all costs. So much so that the second after they kissed Tommy was kind of like isolated he just doesn't do anything with anyone else even though there is space for that, even all that was the expectation for at least his friendship with Eddie to stick around, so I don't think they're going to go that route but it would be doing something with Hen and Chim if they want to be effective, I mean they just need him to exist outside of Buck and then you can actually start working towards the development of the character, it wouldn't be a thing that goes like it's one and done, I think it would be something that they would have to work with because they made a point that Tommy is a bad fit on Buck's life and we have the the begins episodes that were never addressed (and it kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth but they kind of decided that gay excuses complacent which is bullshit) but they could have tried the same way that they tried to redeem Taylor, they didn't but it works if they decide they want to go there. There are ways to write it, I don't know exactly how they would go about it in specifics but it would be they would have to bring Tommy into the firefam for it to work. But he wasn't at the actual wedding, he was isolated during the medal ceremony, he wasn't at the hospital and they released that scene so they know they are purposefully keeping him out, I don't think they'll try to turn this around especially with the chaos.

My Weekly Roundup CW 28
I had a little hiatus on this format, but I am back again. I missed writing about my favorite and not so favorite shows. This week was a real roller coaster! I have watched so much good stuff, but also so much meh stuff.
And yes, this will contain spoilers!
1. Be My Favorite (Ep 8)
Tumblr media
Those two are my safe place at the moment. Kawi has understood. He understood that if he wanted to change the future so that no one suffers, he finally had to be honest with himself. It was a process that the drunken subconscious had already completed, only his sober self still struggled a bit to understand that Pisaeng is the one he likes. But we can put that behind us now. He has confessed his feelings to Pisaeng and has now given Pisaeng the chance to court him and I can't wait for that! What I found very successful realized this week was to show how solid Pisaeng is as a person. Even though his life isn't going the way he wants it to (stupid friends and a crush who probably, at this point anyway, doesn't like him in a romantic way) he is still at peace with himself. Our old friend, the little miracle fixer with a few magic tricks up his sleeve, asks him if he should give him a hand and Pisaeng simply replies that he can handle it. I don't even like to imagine what would have happened if he had accepted the help. Pisaeng has nothing to reproach himself for and doesn't regret his previous decisions. Once again, this series simply enchanted me. We all wish from time to time to undo events of the past, but don't think about what impact our decisions and actions would have on the lives of others as well. And Kawi has only thought until the next smile from Paer. But that he as a person was not even ready to shape the future according to his own wishes, he did not understand, which is why he ended up becoming an alcoholic and everyone around him is unhappy. He has had a life in his mind's eye that he thought would make him happy, which it wouldn't because he never got a clue about what would make him truly happy. Until now. And I think it's good that he's allowing himself to be loved and to love.
2. Tokyo in April is... (Ep 5)
I don't know exactly how many times this episode brought tears to my eyes. This series feels so hopeful on one hand and so melancholy on the other. I felt all the emotions along with Ren this week. There was this longing to be close to Kazuma. How he buttoned his shirt and Ren literally melted in this physical closeness. And on the other hand, still the fear of not being good enough for him. When Kazuma offer him the shirt, Ren protests briefly if it's really okay to wear this new and expensive shirt. For Kazuma, it is not a question at all, as he has loved Ren for over ten years. There's nothing but love for Ren, and Ren is worth so much more than a silly shirt. I suffered along with Ren trying to contact Kazuma after he had to go to France, and broke when the connection between them was cut off altogether. And I felt pure joy when the two pairs of shoes were in the doorway and Kazuma sent him the text message with the food and asking when Ren was coming home. I'm very curious to see how they will continue the Sanada story and how extreme they will get.

3. Stay With Me (Ep 5-8)
Whew, this series is killing me. But I love it. You can see parallels to Addicted, and in fact I'm actively trying to avoid comparisons so I don't denigrate the series itself. But we get told so much more than we did in the first adaptation. And it doesn't bother me that Su Yu and Wu Bi aren't as actively bl as Gu Hai and Bai Lou Yin. Maybe it doesn't bother me because I don't know the novel and can't compare the series with it. Anyway, they found out this week that they are stepbrothers and they despise each other again. Well, anyway, that's what they like to tell themselves, but Wu Bi has already stated quite drunkenly that he just can't hate him and doesn't want to hurt him. And Su Yu can no longer pretend that he doesn't miss him either. That's when his own subconscious snapped him out of it, when he thought Wu Bi was sitting in his seat again and a smile crept into Su Yu's face. I think it's just delightful and the acting is really good. Story-wise they do a lot of things right too and the narration feels natural and fluid. I'm absolutely thrilled with the series and it doesn't bother me in the end if we don't get any hot bed scenes. Maybe there's a kiss in it, maybe not. As far as I know, the series is not aired in China, which means they didn't suffer from censorship. The chemistry between Su Yu and Wu Bi is definitely there and great. And honestly, a jealous Wu Bi was already cute and fun to watch. And with scenes like the bicycle rid I am totally satisfied.

4. Minato Shouji Coin Laundry Season 2 (Ep 2)
While I found the first episode very exhausting, I liked the second one much better. It's nice to see what's going on in Minato's head. He can't show it to the outside world how much he loves Shin and as soon as he's with him a bit longer or looks into his face, he runs the risk of giving in to his emotions. Which Shin would have rather less of a problem with. It's frustrating to watch, but with a little more understanding of where Minato is coming from and how much he's suppressed his own feelings over the years, coupled with some internal homophobia, you can understand why he's always trying to control himself and is afraid to let go and live the feelings that burn inside him. The nice thing is that Shin knows who Minato is and appreciates and classifies the little things he does for him. And should Minato eventually get to the point of telling Shin how much he loves him, we'll probably see Shin rapturously slip away into another realm. But yes, with the second episode, the joy of the series has finally returned.
5. La Pluie (Ep 12 - Final)
I'll be honest, the show lost me by the tenth episode. Definitely Patts and Saengtai as a couple. And I also have to confess that I fast-forwarded half of the episode this week. Well, actually, I watched in rapture as Longfom finally told Tien in cotton-candy sweetness that he liked him, and as Tien accepted his confession and landed in his arms overjoyed I couldn't suppress a short squeal. And then came that half-hour montage of Tai looking for Patts. Yes, he had to do some searching, but instead of street impressions and watching Tai ask people if they've seen this vet, I actually would have liked a little more cosiness from Patts and Tai. I could have lived with a short time jump, I don't know, three years into the future. The end came a bit too fast, after all the torture we had to endure. And I don't even want to talk about the ending itself. What kind of shit was that? Should there be a spin-off? Nah, thanks, but I don't need it. Tien was happy for five fucking minutes. Give this boy a break! For me the series ended here:

6. Hidden Agenda (Ep 2)
It's not going to be my highly anticipated series of the week, but I at least liked the second episode a little better than the first. Joke has made it to the debate club and can now help Zo realize his hidden agenda of landing Nita and also tackle his own hidden agenda of courting Zo at the same time. I mean yeah, we know how it's going to turn out. It shouldn't be too much of a surprise at the end, the basic idea of the series is too familiar for that, but still, you can enjoy the ride to the end anyway. The only thing that might be turned off during the ride would be the radio….
7. Low Frequency (Ep 2)
Well, the story itself is interesting. It would just be so nice if the actors didn't just stop acting when they don't have a speaking part. I mean Mon on the one hand looks like he's permanently stoned and like his brain is very empty from time to time. The dialogue just doesn't feel natural, it feels very contrived, which I don't blame the actors for, the director should actually see that and explain to them how to do it better. Well, maybe he thought it was just right…As I said, I like the story and I'll keep watching, but it's amazing how natural the series still feels at 1.5x speed. Well, Thames is a ghost now, whether he's dead or not, I really didn't get Mons' explanation. All I know is that the good guardian spirit gave Mon the important advice not to fall in love with Thames while Thames is standing next to him, and there's never another word said about it, but let's not kid ourselves, Mon is already over the hill with his feelings. We also learn that Thames has been the victim of a plot and that they tried to frame him for the drunk driving accident. No alcohol was detected in the blood, but there was a smell of alcohol at the scene of the accident. Reason enough to cancel him, sure. Why the management doesn't go to the press and say that no blood alcohol was detected, I don't know…But in the end it's not that important. Because this way we can see how Mon will help Thames. How exactly we will see maybe next week.
8. Step By Step (Ep 12 - Final)
The series started out strong. That is, I liked the first episodes and Jeng was and is a feast for the eyes. But my problems with the series started very early. I couldn't really relate to the characters. Pat was whiny and naive. I couldn't understand why Jeng fell in love with him. I don't mean that in a bad way, I just can't see Pat as a potential partner. He's not nearly as mature in my eyes as he should be and as Jeng wants him to be. And Jeng, to me, is a toxic partner. One often thinks of toxic as partners who are either violent whether physically or psychologically or who cheat or manipulate, but Jeng is toxic in a different way. He doesn't leave Pat's growth to himself, but tries to push him into roles he doesn't want to take (yet). But in the process, he also forgets about normal processes and hierarchies. All of this wouldn't have even bothered me all that much if the side story had just been spun on. I still think it's underwhelming that Jaab and Jane were just erased like that. Their story started out so strong and I was really looking forward to it and then Jane breaks up with his boyfriend and Jaab is mad at him? Yeah, that's when it stopped for for me. And after that they were hardly a topic and worst of all was the finale, where they were given a short side scene and you only saw Jaab. It's absolutely unclear what their relationship is. And please, no spin-off! This can't be anything good. In the end, I'm really disappointed in the series and don't miss it. No rewatch potential for me.
9. Dinosaur Love (Ep 4)
To describe this series I would say it is the perfect series for a Sunday evening. After a busy work week and maybe a hectic weekend, it can't get any worse than this series. And for the new week, you can tell yourself it can only get better from here on out. In this fourth episode, Rak has now moved into the dorm, got a roommate who is a real asset to the series with his captivatingly quick manner, Dino has made contact with Rak's father in a creepy way (from where did he et the number?), Dino sang really, really badly, we realized once again that friends should not be trusted in this universe, and Mek is just plain dumb. It was a feast again!
Honorable Mention
His Man Season 2 (Ep 8+9)
I love watching this one so much! There is so much drama going on, but it is not in any cometition with the other series I watch during the week. It is a datin show, so I can't rate it like the full scripted shows. But I love every second of this and I love talking about it with @leonpob! Thank you so much for reaching out! 🤍
Dropped This Week
Yes, there are some shows I am not willing to waist my time with... Not that many, but lately I understood that I can't watch everything!
Be Mine Superstar
After the second episode I just couldn't go on. I don't like the mains, especially Punn. He was just annoying and a big nope for me.

so like the thing for me is I love bi buck. like hes truly living his best life and I hope he keeps getting to be happy and oliver is truly killing it and I love the first kiss scene. for me its just like... now why am I supposed to care about bucktommy specifically at all. its like tommy is hovering slightly above ali relevancy but below abby or taylor relevancy. and actually I think this episode was a good step for them but like... I want more if I'm supposed to root for their relationship to succeed. we dont even really know why tommy is interested in buck. not to mention tommy never really showed development from the begins episodes it was all just implied? In general I think theres an opportunity to do more there that just hasnt been used (also outside the show lou's cameos and the weird fetishy fans that are only watching for bucktommy dont help lol)
I mean I don't really have an answer for why you should care about or like bucktommy specifically to be honest. you fuck with them or you don't (though. relevancy is certainly a Peculiar way to rank buck's love interests? personally I think the fact that tommy shows this much genuine interest in buck should set him above taylor and abby but I'm not here to play categories) but to your other points -
yeah I have no clue what you mean by why tommy is interested in buck. never has any couple on this show sat down at the beginning of their relationship and read out a list of what traits attract them to each other to the audience. why does any other character in this show like buck? considering they've all seen him at his best and his worst I would assume it's because they know him in all his shades and love him for it. I can't be sure though, none of them have ever sat down to tell me. considering tommy has ALSO seen buck at some of his worst behavior, I'd assume it's because he's looked under the armor and liked what he's seen too.
continuing on this theme, I'm ALSO confused by what you mean by his development is implied. of course it would be. before this season he was barely a side character. the story wasn't about him, why would they waste the other characters begins episodes on developing HIM. not to mention they still do manage to do a fair bit of that just by showing you how he's changed. also, considering he was just reintroduced THIS season (and THIS THIS season of all seasons. 30 high stakes storylines packed in each episode of an already shortened season season) I think it's a bit ridiculous to expect them to have done more with his character and this relationship than they've already managed to do. I don't know how long he's staying or how much more we're gonna get but that there's so much opportunity for more as you say is WHY this storyline is so enjoyable to so many people
and describing everyone who joined the fandom because of bucktommy fetishy is certainly. A Choice. that you are making right now. that I can easily call out for being a very homophobic one at that. BUT I will choose to give you the benefit of a doubt and assume you're only talking about those new fans who discredit henren and michael having been here from the very beginning to consider bucktommy as the only queer rep this show has done. at which point I would just point out that I can understand that but frankly buddie fans would have been and probably will be even more insufferable in this respect so I don't see how that's a bucktommy issue
my overall review: you're asking the wrong questions bud. it's fine if you don't like them!! it's fine if you like them well enough but don't really care!! it's fine if you think you could like them if they do it right!! just enjoy what you enjoy and ignore the rest but these are not valid Concerns about bucktommy. To Me. sorry

5 Tips to Getting to 50k Words
Tumblr media
It’s the middle of NaNoWriMo, and the race to the finish may start to feel daunting! NaNo Participant Lori Chick has a few tips on staying motivated so you reach your word count goal. So, you’re a few weeks into NaNo, and you have just realized that 50k is a lot of words. It seems interminable and impossible and it’s stressing you out. Don’t. Don’t stress. NaNo is for fun and to challenge us and I can promise you, outside of real life (stupid real life ruining everything) issues, you can ABSOLUTELY hit your 50k. Honestly, your biggest obstacle is probably the anxiety and stress about writing 50k words in a month.
Thing is, the best way to hit 50k words is just to sit down and write. JUST write. Don’t edit, don’t look back at what you wrote, or research anything. Yes, I know, it means that what you’re going to end up with will be messy and contradictory and have plot holes a mile wide. But you know what? That doesn’t matter. Your challenge isn’t to complete a publisher worthy novel in one month — It’s to write 50k words in a month. I promise you, there are no authors, no matter how amazing and talented, who have a publishable novel in one month. NONE. It’s impossible. So you need to breathe and let that utterly absurd idea go. You’re not here to write the next great novel. You’re here to put the words on the pages. That’s it, that’s all. Just write words, one after another, until you hit 50k. Alright: now that we have that foolish expectation that was gnawing at you and destroying your word count dealt with — how do we get those words? 1. Stop Editing, Stop Researching Don’t do anything that isn’t putting words on the page. When you finish a sentence, write the next one. If you have to pause and think, then do that. Think about what happens next and write that. Or go off on a tangent  who knows, maybe there’s gold off in those unknown hills. Explore, have fun, give yourself permission to write whatever comes into your head. Remember this is a novel — but it is not a finished and edited novel. This is your first draft. I might even say it’s your pre first draft. You’re writing down your ideas and fleshing out your characters and your world. Hell, you can have a full 50k just about your world. That’s okay too. 2. Kill your criticism. Bonk it over the head with the Traveling Shovel of Death and have Mr. Ian Woon bury it in your backyard. Mary Sue/Gary Lou? Who cares? Plot holes? Those are just opportunities to fill in with whatever weird crap you want. Stuck? Throw in a murder, some aliens, ninjas, pirates or whatever your heart desires. It doesn’t have to make sense. It just has to be fun. You can break ALL the writerly rules and I’ll let you in on a secret: almost every author who gets published breaks them ALL the time. Writing rules aren’t even rules (more like a vague guide), and they absolutely should not be walls. 3. Destroy distractions. You love your family, your friends, but tell them to buzz off for the month. If they really want they can run errands for you, but no, you don’t need to watch a crappy movie, or drink overpriced coffee in a noisy crowded franchise, you have 50k words to write. The only function of family and friends during NaNo is support staff to keep your butt in the chair and hold you while you sob uncontrollably after hitting a wall (while making sure you somehow eat, drink and sleep — at least some of those three). If they’re NaNo-ing with you, they’re your friendly challengers, make good use of that. All in all, family is a wonderful source of support, but distractions are the enemy. 4. Get a writing buddy (or more!) It is a huge help to write with other people. There’s a reason NaNo has Liaisons, it’s because it’s a LOT easier to hit 50k when you’re in a group who are all cheering each other on. Racing against a friend is great motivation, and the bonus is, even if you are racing, it still isn’t a cut throat competition, because you’re hoping that everyone hits 50k. So gather a group, challenge each other, go to the forums and get an adoptable NPC, plot twist or other. Ask for advice when you get stuck, and if your stress gets too high, vent. Yes, I know I said you should only be writing, but let’s be honest, that’s as likely to happen as you eating right and getting more active after a doctor’s visit. Do the best you can. 5.  Have Fun. NaNo isn’t supposed to destroy your mental health or your life. It’s meant to be a fun challenge, something to be proud of and to join with people around the world in a fevered ambitious attempt to fill up the ever yawning gap of digital space with words and ideas. Life is sometimes hard, we have mental health issues, many have children or financial issues. If you can’t make that 50k, don’t feel awful. Cut yourself some slack and admit that maybe it isn’t happening this year, and that’s okay. While your word count is important, YOU are more important. After all, you can’t hit 50k next year if you’re burned out this year.

Filling Empty Spaces (Amy/Mitch), part 220
Mitch and Amy find an unexpected connection due to absent lovers. Set around season 11->.
A/N: I didn’t have a beta for this story, so hopefully there won’t be too many grammar errors.
****
After Amy's effusion of frustration, Mitch and her were still sat on the blanket, watching the scenery and letting the summer breeze brush over them as they leaned on each other.
It was understood without saying anything that they both needed this moment of silence to process things.
But their quiet time didn't last long as Amy's phone beeped. She sighed, not wanting to be disturbed, but figured if it was Jade, she would like to know what was going on with Lyndy.
Mitch glanced at her, but then gave her privacy to check on her text without him intruding.
When Amy let out a longer sigh and her figure next to him crumpled a little, he had to ask. "What is it...?"
"I totally forgot the ranch hand I was going to interview was gonna come over today", Amy mumbled, biting her teeth out of frustration. "He's asking directions. -- I- I can't be dealing with this right now..."
She touched the bridge of her nose quickly, trying to focus.
"Why don't you ask someone else to interview him instead?" Mitch suggested. "Someone's home, aren't they? Jack, Lisa?" he reminded, since it was the reason he had not been able to come over.
"Well, yeah, I could", Amy admitted, "but I really wanted to do it myself. He's going to work for me, after all. I want to get a feel of him, so I know if we'll work well together."
Mitch bobbed his head a little, understanding. His arm around Amy soothed her gently. "Makes sense."
"I'll just ask him to come tomorrow", she then decided, already typing her reply.
The kid from Tim's rodeo school was the one wanting the job after all, so she was in the position of power to change the schedule, Amy reminded herself.
Mitch nodded, looking around and spotting flowers on his right. He bended the stem of a one of the Geraniums, then handing it to Amy when she was done with her text message.
Amy glanced at it and let out a half-chuckle as she accepted it. "Thanks..."
The small surprise of Mitch's sweetness helped her release tenseness over the ranch hand interview situation as she leaned back against him.
"Is there anything I could do...?" Mitch asked then, caressing the side of her arm that was facing outward from him.
"I guess not", Amy figured, shaking her head. "This is enough as it is, though. -- I just wish life was always this simple."
Mitch smiled a little. "Well, it can be, at least when we are together. I mean, we aren't in a hurry to do or be anything, right?"
"Well, no", Amy admitted. "Especially now that Lou knows... I mean, I still have to tell everyone else, but I feel like... I almost don't care what others think at this point."
She was surprised by her own reaction, but maybe it was some form of battle fatigue over this string of issues she had had to deal with for so long now.
Amy hummed.
"It's kind of... liberating, not caring so much. To think all this time I could have just felt like this..." she continued, speaking as if feelings were this simple to control - they really weren't, not in her case, anyway.
"You don't think it's... terrifying? Like that sad feeling you talked about earlier", Mitch checked, hoping not to trigger anything.
Amy thought about that, wondering why it did in fact feel different somehow. Why she wasn't as scared to be a little numb but she was scared to feel sad.
"I don't know how to explain it", she finally said after a while. "But there's no pull in numbness, not the same way there is in sadness. It just... is. Sadness feels bottomless, like you never arrive anywhere, you just keep going down and down... -- But numbness, it's like you're waiting for something else to arrive. It's like a pause."
Mitch listened, nodding softly. "Just don't stay paused for too long."
Amy moved her head back, so she could look at Mitch. The man's head turned left too, catching her gaze. "I won't. Not with you around."
When Mitch smiled, Amy smiled back.
"See? I'm already smiling..." she pointed out.
"If I could pause a moment, I think this would be a perfectly good moment to stay in", Mitch said, letting his eyes roam on the features of her face.
It made Amy's heart jolt as she let out a soft sigh.
"Yeah, I would have to agree on that..." she murmured.
****
When the cowboy rode with her toward Heartland a little later, Amy felt like they had been so focused on her that she had not even realized she had not asked what was going on with Mitch, so she decided to do that now before they would have to part ways again.
Amy followed Mitch's expression after her question while their horses kept the synchronized pace underneath them. He seemed like he was weighing his words carefully, thinking how to sum it all up.
"Well, when Lou called, I was actually in the middle of tracing Leah's whereabouts", Mitch shared, feeling a bit nervous.
It wasn't a secret to Amy that he was trying to get a hold of his ex-girlfriend - in fact she had encouraged Mitch - but instead his nervousness seemed to come from the uneasy feeling of not knowing what would follow, how it would affect him and what it would therefore mean for him and Amy.
"Oh yeah?" Amy asked, steering Spartan, even though the horse hardly needed any help as he would have probably been able to find home in his sleep on these familiar trails. "So, did you find her?"
Mitch shook his head.
"Or, well... I did, but... I didn't get far. I was going through the options when my phone rang. That's probably partly why I was caught off guard with the call; my mind was elsewhere."
Amy could understand that. From what she had heard, the phone call itself had been rather dramatic, not to mention Mitch had the added emotional dilemma going on at the same time.
"So, what are the options?" she wanted to hear his thoughts.
Mitch let his eyes wander toward the treeline far away as he came up with the answer. A sigh pushed out of his mouth as he thought about the fragility of this whole thing; he wanted to be delicate with it.
"She could be happy, moved on, fine without anything there to remind her about what happened", Mitch listed. "Me reaching out could then bring it all crashing down."
"It's possible", Amy agreed, thinking back to her own situation, reflecting what she would want. Obviously her situation wasn't the same, but it gave her a perspective she could offer in order to give Mitch another possible approach. "But, what else?"
"Or... she could be dealing with all of that and more, not doing so well", Mitch suggested. "Maybe she's still taking that dive into that darkness you just talked about."
"Maybe", Amy said, nodding. "But the thing is, you won't know until you know. And sure, it could all trigger her - and I don't think you're going to take that lightly - but what's the third option?" she asked.
Mitch turned his head to look at Amy, wondering what was the third option? He wasn't sure what she meant - and he felt a little dumb about it.
Amy could read this from his face, so she figured she'd offer her take.
"Let's say it is still on her mind, affecting her in some ways. You'd hope she'd unravel it at some point, right?" Amy asked. "So she could move on and live her life as freely as she can. Have that... release."
There was no doubt about that in Mitch's mind, so he nodded. "Of course."
"I said that for me sadness feels bottomless", Amy recounted, "and if it's anything like that for her, she might want to actually meet the bottom of that pit. Because when you reach that, you can at least get back on your feet so you can try and climb up. But you can't do that before you get there."
Mitch thought about that, seeing how that made sense in theory.
"And yeah, it's going to hurt", Amy admitted, sighing, "but it's going to hurt no matter what. There's no moving on or moving forward without it hurting to some degree, because change hurts."
"Yeah... Don't we know that..." Mitch said, knowing they both had experience about that.
"No one wants to feel sad or hurt or even numb, but that's just part of life at some point. Hopefully people are lucky enough to have people there to support them during those times", Amy summed up the whole conversation they had been having this last hour.
"Yeah, but that's the thing - I wasn't able to support her then", Mitch reminded.
"I get that. But trauma is... tricky", Amy described. "The healing can't always begin right away, sometimes you need time and space to reach the bottom before you can even think about getting up. Maybe she's closer to the bottom than to the top after all these years."
Amy looked at Mitch, seeing the guilt written all over his face. It looked like it kept bringing up that lump back in his throat he tried so hard to fight.
"Mitch... You're here now", Amy wanted to stress. "If she wants, that is. And... I know from experience that you are a good person for that; you're reliable, you're caring and you listen. That's more than many victims get from the people closest to them", she added, feeling like her own experiences in that field had been mixed.
Some people just weren't equipped with those qualities or didn't even want to learn to become better at them. But Mitch was willing to grow, so Amy could imagine that being a good thing when it came to him contacting Leah.
The woman only had to give him a chance and see how Mitch could help her get some type of closure for some part of that traumatic experience.
If that was what was going on, that is.
"I guess I see a fourth option too", Mitch confessed. "And it worries me."
"What's that?" Amy asked.
"What if I get in, just enough to hurt her again, and then she won't accept my help anymore", Mitch explained. "Am I just going to leave her be?"
"Not necessarily", Amy thought, then thinking about something, as she viewed the scenery in front of her from between Spartan's two perked ears. "I mean, I know it's not the same, but... I also feel like as its purest, it does teach me a lot about trauma. Helping horses, I mean", she began.
Mitch looked at her, listening.
"Take me and Spartan, for example", Amy explained. "When the accident that killed my mom happened, Spartan was part of that experience too. And he healed from the bruises somewhat easily, thankfully - as did I - but the emotional wounds... they were harder to deal with. I know I was just a kid back then, and now that I've grown up, I view some things differently, but..."
She thought back to that moment in the ring with Spartan, where she would run him around, hoping to connect with him and make him ready for their first join-up.
"I had this feeling that he was blaming me for it and it really weighed heavy on me. I was supposed to help him, protect him, but... things didn't go like we planned with mom", Amy spoke.
The scared look in Spartan's eyes, every time she had approached him, flashed inside Amy's mind. She could still recall it easily as she had been familiar with that exact feeling too.
"And so, after the accident, when I tried to help him, he refused my help, but I didn't give up. Helping him was not easy, but the other option was also not an option for me. I didn't want to give up on him", Amy said, feeling so happy about that decision she had made years ago.
Mitch looked at Amy and the horse under her, having hard time imagining them being anything but this unit that they were now.
"Thinking back, I don't know how much of that whole process was for him and how much of that was for me, but... maybe we needed to go through that together in order to heal from that experience", Amy continued. "It still lives in us and it will never go away, but life has been built around that too. -- What's that saying? "Sometimes the only ones that can help you are the ones that let you down hardest". Something like that..."
Mitch nodded, quietly, looking like he maybe agreed.
"That is not to say what happened was your fault, but I know you blame yourself. I know how that's like; nothing I say will take that away if you feel it deeply. What I've realized over the years is that what happened with mom or Spartan wasn't my fault either. Sometimes bad things happen, not everything is under our control or a consequence of something we didn't do correctly", Amy shared her perspective, hoping Mitch would remember that down the line.
It was true that she had asked her mom to go and get Spartan from Mr. Mallen's farm, in a way setting everything into motion, but at the same time part of those decisions leading up to the rescue mission had been made by Marion as well. Her mother had tried to assess the risks and unfortunately failed as she had lost her life that night.
Life was always a gamble. Sometimes it was worth the risk, sometimes it wasn't. You never really knew until you found out.
"But... I wasn't able to have that perspective before I faced the situation head on and lived through it and - more importantly - beyond. And I think maybe the same thing can happen to you too. And, hopefully, for Leah as well", Amy hoped.
Mitch looked at Amy and nodded. He steered Maverick closer and reached out his hand, making her realize Mitch wanted her to hold it.
She accepted his hand and they rode side by side, slowly, cherishing their connection.
"Maybe your situation is not the same", Mitch admitted, "but you've given me a lot to think about. So... thank you for that."
"Of course", Amy said, smiling. "Any time."

Are we ever going to address the fact that everyone was just hating on Owen for things that grew into something bigger than it was? Like I totally get that Owen was talking about Imogen, however, that should’ve been an between those two. Everyone who was close to Owen already should have talked to Owen to get his perspective. In addition with Rory, I honestly didn't like her the moment she and Kalia started to fling with each other when Kaila was with Sav, but then she had the idea of kicking out Owen oh no baby—let's talk about that!—does Owen Know?—importantly how would he react to knowing that he could have been packless?
If you couldn't tell Owen is one of my favorites, I definitely hope you a lot more of him. Also, I definitely was hoping for him to be packless and met a new pack in San Sequoia so he and the pack can beef/tense with his old pack.
In all fairness, Owen is an asshole in general lol. He was really moving mad. They could only take his actions at face value, because that’s all there was at the time. They all found it to be disrespectful but especially Lou. Being packmates was new to them, but they’ve been friends for years. Owen and Lou had a habit of sharing girls in the past, but for Lou, Imogen was something serious. Owen knew that. The wolves in general are all quite scrappy. All of them have their hard limits though where they know to not take it too far and Imogen is Lou’s. Owen telling Lou he was gonna make Imogen suck his dick was waaaaaay over the line. The underlying issue doesn’t matter to him. He loves Imogen in more ways than one. She was his first friend above everything else. He’s all action when it comes to her. Once he and Lou did have a deeper conversation, that softened Lou up to him more. That helped Lou to realize that Imogen was right. That there definitely was something else going on to explain Owen’s behavior. And Will did try to talk to Owen about his thing with Lou and Imogen, but Owen being Owen, he just maintained his stance of “I’m getting sick of Lou” and “I’m really attracted to Imogen.” All Will could tell him is to cut it out. Those two have a habit of bickering. Owen and Savannah too. They can all understand where O’s actions stemmed from, but they definitely don’t excuse them. He could’ve gone about things in a more respectful way.
Now Rory is a different story. She knew Sav, Will, and Owen long before she knew Lou. Most of the wolves in an area know each other or at least of each other. Her relationship with Lou was something else entirely. She’s a lot closer to him because she essentially had to raise him. Lou was a wild mess when they dropped him off at her doorstep. That experience wasn’t at all easy and was very traumatizing to her. (Which we’re get into in S3! But that’s also why she felt she was owed the right to stay with him in S2.) but it was something that brought the two of them a lot closer. Her loyalties lie with Lou first and foremost. So, if Owen is an issue for Lou then she’d be willing to kick him out. Rory, much like Owen, is also an asshole, so she’s definitely told him that a few times. I don’t think she’d have the heart to do it though after promising his mom she’d look out for him, Lou, Will, and Sav also wouldn’t want to lose him as a packmate either. All of them have a lot of love for each other. They’ve stuck together since they met. They just fight like siblings lol. Or in Rory’s words- like puppies. They’ll step on and nip each other, but they’ll always stick together. And Owen in a general sense doesn’t take kindly to new people. Especially if it’s not someone he can sleep with. He doesn’t have an interest in new people. Which is why he’s very adamant about not accepting the new packmates in S3. He’s a friend snob!
And we will absolutely see more of Owen! He’s quickly grown to be one of my favorite characters. He’s a really complex boy. And I’m so excited to explore more of him just figuring life out.

It was super nice to have a feildtrip today. It was just so nice to not be at the desk being so bored. I had a good time. It wasn't the best day but it was still nice.
I slept a little better. I still woke up in the middle of the night but I had an easier time falling asleep. I was not feeling great physically though. My hair dried weird and I was just feeling self conscious. The outfit I chose didn't work out and I changed into something better but I was still a bit awkward feeling. I also messed up my eyeliner and was just not feeling amazing.
James gave me big hugs and helped me carry some stuff to the car. And then they said goodbye and headed to the museum. I took a minute to gather myself and then was off.
It wasn't a bad drive. James has made me a grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwich and it was good food for eating and driving. And I pulled up to camp at 8.
I would stop at the art building first. To get the staffs and the rest of my art materials. And then down to the office to warm up and work on sewing my mice.
I would get all the mice I brought finished. But I might redo how their ears are attached because I don't like how it looks. But they are super cute though and I'm very excited to have a new critter.
The group was set to arrive at 10. And everyone else slowly trickled in. I would go and set up my table and Elizabeth said I could just go wait at the amphitheater. Don't have to tell me twice.
I wandered down there and got to meet some of the donors that Alexi, Heather, and Lou were taking on a tour. They had a very sweet dog with them. And it was just nice sitting outside waiting for the group.
I heard them before I saw them. And they were so nice. The indigo group made me anxious at first but now I really enjoy them. And it's a really nice change of pace because they want everything to be built around free choice. And because of the relationships they have built with these kids it actually works pretty well. Which is great.
I would stay for the intro but it started drizzling when they started breaking into groups so Elizabeth told me I could bounce. And I would join them again after lunch.
They went on a hike and did a worksheet about seeing things in nature. And while they were all doing that I was in the office. Printing my journals for our upcoming feildtrips and learning how to change the toner in the printer.
It would take me a while to print and then fold everything. But once that was done I worked on reaching out to schools who have Native American field trips in the next few weeks. And printed those schedules for those who got back to me so that Sarah won't have trouble leading the programs while me and James are in Africa.
I had my veggie hot dog for lunch and once it was closer to 1230 I walked up to the hacienda to gather the group.
But there was a slight change and we were directed to just go straight to the field. Honestly I preferred that. I would head to the trading post and eventually Adam from indigo would join me and I showed him how to sue the printing press and it went so good!
They had planned two other projects but everyone loved my lead prints so much that that was the only thing we did. And it was messy but exciting and everyone loved using the press and the brayers and it was awesome.
When we had a little lull in the kids who were coming over Adam agreed I could go get a smore. And it was very good. He would go down next and get his own and helped them out over there. And I continued to encourage the kids to find interesting things to print. I was hoping for a feather but we would try flowers and that was fun.
A little after 2 it started drizzling so I packed up everything. The last couple kids who were printing were super into it so I waited until they were done and then put everything in my box and walked it to the car. I had to navigate around running children and I was struggling to carry the heavy bin but I did not drop it and I made it to the car without falling.
I would head to the office to answer some emails and had the rest of my lunch. Since I had set up the hacienda myself I decided I didn't have to help put it away. And would just chill at my desk and played on my phone and did some research about nonsense.
It was Celia's last feildtrips before she starts her new job next week. And she was a little emotional and I was very uncomfortable because if she cried I would cry!! I am so happy for her and this new job but man. I am going to miss working together but if I think about it to much I get very sad in a selfish way. We have talked about that a lot. How it's really sad we aren't working together anymore. But we will make a big effort to hang out more since we can't just rely on being at camp together.
I would finish up and leave not long after Celia did. And I was just really excited to go home. I was tired.
And when I got home James was right there! Hello my love! They were making me dumplings and we chatted and they would come sit upstairs with me. We would cuddle a little while they talked about their day. And eventually they went to do their podcast and I headed to my studio to sew.
I finished the second wave of mice and will do all their finishing work tomorrow. I also made all the ears I will need for them. But it was a nice hour just working.
I would come up here and went through some packing stuff. I think I have the shoes I'm going to wear picked but also I may cut one pair still. I also decided I was going to wear my backpack rather then my tote. I may change my mind again but for now I moved everything over and I'm happy about that. And it was fun just sorting my stuff. I always like that. I also chose a robe to bring as pajamas and put soms stuff in my suitcase like slips for the dresses. I can't wait to pack for real.
Now I think I'm going to go take a shower and chill for the rest of the night. James is still doing their podcast but hopefully they will be done soon.
Tomorrow is a day of getting ready for the open house on Sunday. And I am just hoping for a chill time. I hope you all have a great night. And have a fun day tomorrow. I love you all. Good night!!

Hey Nelson Algren: Chicago, they tell me you are wicked and I believe them for I have seen the black-eyed bat-winged goth chicks smoking clove cigarettes luring the suburban boys with come-hither sneers. Hey Carl Sandburg: this city broke my nose and emptied my pockets but I’ve never loved a lovelier town more than I’ve loved her: broad shoulders, soot in her hair, arms marked by railroad tracks. O hog-butcher concrete charmer, smashing all my dreams like the empty bottles I threw off the roof that night in Roscoe Village.
She’s an ugly broad but around here we celebrate the ugly things. We pick the flowers growing in the vacant lots, wind them into wreaths to crown our dirty May(day) Queens; make toasts with half-flat champagne we find in dumpsters. We smell like unwashed pussy and dumpster juice. We sing: rock on Chicago. Fuck you punk rock.
I wanna write a history of Chicago punk and leave out everyone I don’t like. I wanna write a history of Chicago punk and leave out everyone I slept with, but then there’d be no one left. I wanna write a history of Chicago punk but instead I’m writing this: my history. This fanzine dedicated to my own personal mythology. This track list of my greatest ghost stories. This guided tour of my Chicago, this vicinal ode, this litany of neighborhoods: Pilsen. Roscoe Village. St. Ben’s. Boystown. Logan Square. Wicker Park. Rogers Park. Lincoln Park. Lincoln Square. And Lakeview, Lakeview, always Lakeview and the center of the universe: Clark and Belmont—
I washed up in the Punkin’ Donuts parking lot, kissing some sailor, sipping some illegal elixir before a show at Metro. The midwest darkness sagging the rooftops, the streetlights fading orange on, cigarette-eyed skinheads leaning against graffiti-scarred walls. I was a nighthawk at Clarke’s, a strip of photobooth pictures at Schuba’s. Captured forever in the ink and emulsion, a black and white kid pouting, sneering, posing for the flashbulb, hiding behind the curtain. Hey Jessica Hopper: all the zinesters seemed tired last night.
Exhausted from carting boxes of Xeroxed manifestos miles to the Fireside Bowl in the December cold. Aching arms and slush oil in my steel-toed shoes, city wind peeling the fishnets from my legs, lifting my plaid skirt, Monroeing me with no glamour. I just wanted to be carried away in the pit by the hands of my brothers, instead I sat in the back behind a card table. Wanted to sneak into the bathroom and drink the blackberry wine I’d smuggled in my water bottle, wanted to dance up front, hips swingin’, elbows akimbo, to surf the crowd—instead I sat there silent while people flipped through my most secret thoughts and at the end of the night I left alone and far too sober, with a few more bucks in my pocket.
Hey Brendan Kelly: I rode the Metra train south from Wisconsin with my notebook, leather jacket, and a bottle of vodka so acrid it might as well have been paint thinner, stripping the glow off my guts, scribbling the suburban backyards, apocryphal graffiti, down in lousy poetry. I got to Chicago thinking I’d be some poet-punk-star, some next you, Lou, Patti, but no amount of black leather or rotgut booze could make me cool. I draped myself in punk fashion and a bad attitude but beneath the black leather and torn denim and the pseudo-vicious sneers, beneath the hair dye, I was just bad skin stretched too tight over neurotic coffeebones and a mashed potato heart, such a puddle of goo I couldn’t even talk to my crushes like a normal person. Instead I wrote about them in my zine, made them a mix tape, gave them a copy and ran away screaming.
Hey John Kezdy, hey Jeff Pezzati: I came to Chicago hoping I could make some kind of mark but mostly felt like I got there five, ten, twenty years too late, so I just stayed out late spoiling my liver, I drank to the wonder, the poor drunk gods of Chicago punk rock, wandered the back alleys past the vacant lots, the frayed places, the soundless rust—and this haunted town flung her magnetic curses at me, ruined me into loving her so real, took every penny I’d crushed on the train tracks as tithe, tried to kill me—
Chicago made me her monster.
—Jessie Lynn McMains, from the novel/novella/epic poem/memoir/zine/whatever/hybrid thing I’ve been trying to write for like, a decade

🤐 sally
🤐 - Memory that they can never tell anyone about.
Tumblr media
It was over twenty autumns ago. He knocked on her door.
Lou was out of town and Sally was home alone with Martha, who was nearly four, and John Ira, only one, so Sally was hesitant to open the door. However, peering out the window, she'd see a young boy, maybe 16 or 17, waiting politely.
Cracking the door a bit, she'd ask him to come back another time.
'You should want to talk to me, Miss,' he answered. 'My name is Anton Orlov.'
Horrified, with no choice, she let him in, making them both tea while the children played in the room adjacent. He explained that he was Step Orlov's nephew, that he was betrothed to a young lady from his hometown and had hoped to invite his few remaining relatives to the wedding when he heard the news of the father and son's disappearance, years ago.
Sally told him what she told everyone, that she'd returned to ask the Orlov men for more help, found them gone and moved into the empty home. He seemed to accept this.
He asked to stay until morning, as he was traveling to meet his fiancée's family in another town. Sally reluctantly agreed.
However, as they sat down to eat dinner that evening, Anton Orlov made a bold demand.
He explained that his family had become rather poor, as was that of his fiancée, and they had nothing with which to start their new life.
As he was the eldest surviving male, the dead Orlovs' surviving property ought to be his inheritance. But, he said, if Sally handed everything over willingly, he'd allow her and her family to remain on the property.
When Sally asked why he thought she'd give most of what she owned away so contentedly, Anton answered:
'Because you know I don't believe you to be so clueless about whatever happened to my uncle and cousin. I think we both know what happened to them, maybe--'
He took a long look at little Martha.
'Five, six years ago?'
Sally felt anger and disgust combine in her stomach. How dare he look at her daughter? With that look on that face? Still, all she could do was shamefully agree, provided he promise to keep his mouth shut.
He stayed in a spare room for the night while Sally kept the children in her own, locked room, seething while they slept, unable to get the way he looked at Martha out of her head.
Early the following morning, she mashed medical arsenic into the boy's breakfast, waking him early for travel as he requested and leaving it in the room.
She went about the day as normal, telling her curious daughter that the friendly stranger had departed early.
Then, once the children were both in bed that next night, she went in and retrieved the boy's body, burying it just a short ways into the woods behind the house.
Nobody came for him, making her wonder if his story was even true. Either way, she's never spoken of it. The guilt is there, years later. He was just a boy. But regret? Sadly, none.
