I don't think Catra and Adora were ever really "friends" especially with how Catra guilt trips her, blames her for everything, and scratched her face just because Adora had another friend

they were technically friends, but their friendship was far from healthy. catra was intensely jealous of adora and thus tried to tear her down, while adora kept giving catra the benefit of the doubt, not realizing how unhealthy this was.

from the first episode itself, this is evident. adora has to apologize for earning an achievement, because catra couldn't go one minute without making things about herself. i understand being jealous, but she could at least try and be happy for adora. but no, she's not happy until adora breaks a rule to humor her.

it's less of a friendship honestly and more of a toxic sibling relationship. they hang out because they grew up together but they also clearly do not have a healthy and supportive relationship.
