A/N: Hoho, second part, here we go! Only Kazuha stuck with MC and Venti, it seems. But oh well! More down the road!

“I just realized that we’re in some major problems. Um, how hard is it to create a fitting melody now that we have ourselves a lyricist?”

“Heavens, Venti, you’re the songwriter.”

“Hey, no rush! How about you focus on getting the set up and ready for filming??”

“How in the world will we film when the song’s not even recorded yet!?”

The spectacle is now a usual sight for a certain silverette, who sits at the nearby bench with a bemused grin as he revises the lyrics in his folder. ‘Soaring’ is playing in his ears.

He glances at the bickering pair and snickers.

Yup, a normal day.

Time has flown by quickly after the rendezvous in the music room, and Kazuha has made sure to make use of his time well. Since poetry is a hobby of his —and has been, for a long time— it didn't take him long to write the lyrics fitting the song.

It is only a week later when he has printed them out for the two to read over, and after a few revisions, they are all done.

... Well, halfway done.

As Kazuha loses himself in the pretty pinks and reds of the flowers planted around the university courtyard, he muses on the concept explained to him by the [c]nette.

Music... he's no stranger to that.

Idols... no stranger to that, either, but to think that he's been roped into being one.. ah.

He closes his eyes with a chuckle and a shake of his head.

They're not idols—don't idols have to go under an agency? As far as he knows, they're mere students struggling to pay debt and finish university.

This activity is a mere pastime where he allows himself to unwind and indulge his insatiable love for writing.

And to be honest, he finds the pair's company to be quite lovely. It doesn't take him long to discern that Venti and [Name] have known each other longer—perhaps from childhood?

It's a nice thought.

"Kazuha! Kazuha, husband,"

"[Name] stop calling him that, it's only a matter of time before he gets up and leaves us for real."

"Let me dream, Venti."

With the same patient smile he has shown them, the literature major stands from the bench and walks to two with a tilt of his head. The pair bursts into a flurry of questions the second he asks why his presence is needed.

And.. as per usual..

Kazuha's sigh is one of resigned amusement.

Of course, it's about which melody sounds better.

"I thought you said I'm the songwriter which means I have the final say!"

"I did, but outside opinion matters, too! Husband wrote the lyrics, so it's only fair that he gets to say his own opinion, don't you think?"

Well, if it's put that way, then it is true that his own input is required, as well. Venti pouts but turns to the silverette with a shy grin before asking which melody will fit the pre-chorus.

It is a part where his instrumental has gotten a tad bit softer.

Kazuha listens with close attention as both Venti and [Name] take turns singing the melody from verse to pre-chorus, with the latter shutting off the speaker afterward. "So? what do you think?"

The ruby-eyed man hums, averting his stare with a furrow of his brows.

"Well..."

In the end, neither was chosen and Kazuha's own impromptu melody was thought to be the best.

For the next couple of weeks, Kazuha has fallen into a decent routine with his two—he’s proud to say—chaotic friends.

Getting to know whilst practicing the song comes without complication, much to his surprise.

He first thought that it’d be difficult to balance things—especially since they all have different majors and their schedules are mashing together in conflict. But surprise surprise, both Venti and [Name] adapt to change with relative ease.

If either one of them is unavailable, the other will take over and cover the things that require the most attention.

That will range from vocal practice -something that the songwriter takes reigns over-, random fittings, set planning, and other whatchamacallits in [Name]’s folder.

Kazuha is truthfully in awe when he sees the detailed plan in the [c]nette’s personal portfolio, in other words, the thing she has willingly obligated herself into creating. For her friend.

Today marks one of the days where he can witness the inked plan on the papers, carmine eyes gleaming at the sketches of a costume with a few pinned photographs of certain locations.

A small label of ‘scene one’ is written neatly on top.

He wonders how long the female has been planning this.

“You have quite the collection,” he muses with a flick to the next page, smiling when he sees unfinished pieces of musical scores flattened along with the others, though the faint creases indicate that it was initially crumpled and thrown away. “And thoughtful.”

“Venti must be so grateful for your hard work.”

Looking away with a nervous laugh, you recall your late three am arguments with the mentioned man regarding his incomplete drafts.

“I told you, there’s no need for that anymore, please get it out of my sight! It’s in the trash bin for a reason!”

“Ven, you have a bad habit of suddenly getting a spark of an idea from your previous incomplete works. You threw those away and you were stumped for a project, what will you do if it happens again?”

Yeah, he has also mentioned a thousand times that you shouldn’t give so much of your time to helping him fulfill his dream.

… Not like you listened, of course.

It’s not like you have much freedom after finishing university, so why not indulge yourself while time still allows it? Bringing this reasoning to your arguments with Venti always seals the deal and he’d acquiesce with a sigh.

“If I may be allowed to ask, why is it that you’re willing to go through such extent to help your friend?” Kazuha asks.

You pause, falling silent as a memory of Venti and his sibling appears in your mind—it is foggy, but just the thought of it makes your throat hurt.

A resigned smile partnered by a sigh leaves as you shrug, telling him that you just wish to help him fulfill a dream.

“Ah, hold on, I have a picture of him when he was eight and won his first recital.”

Just as you are about to head to the drawer at your side of the room, you pause, noticing that he has successfully diverted your attention from the usual practice.

Kazuha is already smiling knowingly when you throw him a blank look.

“You’re going to have to make up for this with vocal practice later, understand? Your voice is decent and getting better, Venti will want you to polish that further.” you chide, beginning your hunt when you reach the cabinet.

“Understood.”

You snort. Ah, ever the obedient person you are, Kazu.

It still feels like a dream—having him join you and your friend. Although it is far from what you had in mind—a group of four simp-able men as idols—Kazuha being here is a large asset.

It isn’t that Venti can’t think up of lyrics, but he complains time and time again that he feels like his delivery for words is lacking.

Kazuha is there to reinforce an already existing skill, though in the end, it’s him who has written the whole piece—with Venti’s giddy approval, of course.

You’ve already gotten his measurements, too. For what exactly? Why, you make the clothes, of course! You are not going to let this chance of dressing both men in suits slip away!

You have the theme of the set all in order!

All you need is patience! Patience.

Hearing the silverette mumble about the contents of your portfolio, you continue about with your search, filing through several old notebooks and small boxes.

“You’re truly prepared for this,” he says in awe, the turning of a page overcoming the silence in the room. Paying no mind to him since you’re rather busy, your reply is a simple hum.

The sound repeats.

“… More than prepared, I see..”

Kazuha sweatdrops as he reads the topmost label of the papers of the current page. Its bold format is practically an eyecatcher. ‘Marriage Contract’.

Leaning back up from searching the bottom drawer of the cabinet after finding the photo you’ve been hunting for, you are about to inform him of your success—when you find him at… that section of the portfolio.

Your shriek—embarrassment, fluster, and panic all in one package—has him nearly dropping the folder. He doesn’t, thankfully.

Oh heavens, you want to die—but wait.

Wait, wait—this opportunity is immaculate.. !

Clearing your throat and paying no mind to the heat in your cheeks, you turn to the silver-haired image of perfection. “Indeed, so you better prepare yourself in the future, husband.”

Kazuha blinks—once.. twice… then laughs, his eyes crinkling as he flashes a sweet smile that almost has you faceplanting to the floor. You do not know if he’s aware of his effect, but oh goodness you could die and ascend right now.

“I’ll have to get to know you more first before anything like that can happen.”

Huffing the hair out of your eyes, you stare at him, the pink in your face returning once you realize the implication behind his words.

The buildup of courage is slow, but when he doesn’t bring down his smile, you are finally able to muster the question that will undoubtedly change your life.

“Hold on..” your eyes begin sparkling, “Are you asking me out on a—”

THUD-

… At least, it will change your life… if you got to ask it in the first place.

THUD

Because like any other important scenarios…

THUD

… A certain someone shall cut in.

THUDTHUDTHUD- SLAM!

“Hold your horses, Kaedehara!” Venti appears at the entrance of the room, one hand at the door frame as he pants. Did he run all the way down the hall… ?

The lyricist doesn’t even have time to react as your childhood friend dives in to snatch the file in his own hands, flopping onto his bed in the process. All Kazuha can do is blink in surprise whilst Venti jumps to his feet, an accusing finger pointing at the former.

“I’m the one getting married to [Name], I promised her that when we were children—I am years ahead of you!”

“That—”

“Get in line!”

“Hold up, Venti—” you gape at him incredulously, “It wasn’t you who—and your promise was di—”

“Don’t be shy now, wife,” he waves his hand, jumping to your side of the room and sitting at your right, eyeing the bewildered silverette. “Now that I’m here, we should start the actual practice, no? I’m rather ea—aah, why do you have that!?”

His shift of attention surprises both you and the other man in the room, prompting your focus to move to the object in your hands.

It’s a picture of three eight-year-old children, all with varying degrees of excited grins with the one in the middle carrying a violin.

Keeping your stare at the photo a little longer makes your smile wistful.

“I was about to show Kazuha your first win, he’s interested in how you got to your wish of becoming an idol.”

Genuinely taken aback at the reason, Venti’s stare falters as he glances at the smiling literature major.

“That’s…” he turns his eyes back to the photo before swallowing. “That’s a story for another time.”

Kazuha notes how the ambience of the room has gotten mellow and blue. If not for the lighthearted expressions on the pair’s faces, he would’ve thought that they are both crestfallen.

Well, it seems like they are, but their sadness is one of acceptance.

Ah, there is more to this than what meets the eye. He thinks to himself. It is interesting, how there is an apparent history to such a dream—a dream that Venti is somewhat reluctant to approach, but [Name] is keen to help with.

It isn’t some simple childhood dream, fascinatingly enough.

The idea of it alone makes Kazuha’s heart flutter. He has always been attuned to people’s sentiments, so with these close observations, he can easily tell that there is something bigger under that seemingly shallow surface.

It thus gladdens him that he chose to stay that afternoon in the music room and lend them his expertise.

Closing his eyes, he sighs, pleased.

“Alright, enough of the misery. Shall we get onto practice?”

He smiles at the brightening features of the two.

Sadness and crisis averted?

Mission successful!

Weekends are spent for—of course, practice. A rule has been set out to ascertain that everyone is still keeping up with their own studies, however, so practice can only be initiated when they are done with their syllabuses.

Due to being the one lagging behind an experienced singer, Kazuha has taken it upon himself to triple his efforts. Of course, while maintaining his studious habits.

It isn’t by any means easy, but since when is life easy, to begin with?

He taps his phone that’s linked to the laptop outside the booth, pausing the music in his ears.

Taking a repose, he reaches for the nearby bottle of water to ease his drying throat. Just then, the door to the studio opens, and in walks Venti. Said student halts, not expecting someone to be in the room.

“You’re already here! Have you been warming up?”

Kazuha slings the headset to his neck to free his ears, shaking his silver tresses as he nods, watching the songwriter place his bag down before entering the recording booth.

The literature major signals the newcomer to wear the spare headset before tapping his phone again, playing a recent recording he thinks is his best try.

“I’ve finished doing the warm-ups you told me hours ago, I was already practicing the lines you’ve given me. Here, please do give your input.”

“That quick!” Venti splutters, though he is quick to silence himself when music begins to play in his ears.

Clasping his hands around the cups of the headset, he listens closely, the warmth in his chest spreading when Kazuha’s lines come into play.

The sound nearly drives him to tears—both due to the fact that someone is singing a piece that he wrote and solely because of the silverette’s improvement.

He’s no pro, but the progress is palpable by sound alone. There are sections when his voice is a little too soft, too… but those can be corrected!

He’s heard from [Name] that he has been practicing by himself sometimes, too.

How nice—Barbara will be happy to hear that Kazuha has taken her lessons seriously, even if the former’s teachings are limited because she’s a trainee under an agency.

Ah, [Name]’s connections shouldn’t be underestimated.

There are empty parts of the song lacking vocals—understandably so, for that is Venti’s portions—that imply incompletion, and there are parts where he can hear Kazuha’s bass harmonies in the last chorus.

That’s new. I never taught that. He thinks.

This realization has Venti whipping his head to the man, who smiles sheepishly.

The songwriter only points this out when the song has ended and he is all but flinging his headset away in disbelief.

“Since when did you do harmonies? Did Barbara teach you? It sounds wonderful!”

It will be perfect when mixed with melodies. A full chorus!

Kazuha scratches his cheek with a laugh. “She did tell me that a song will sound fuller with it, and since we’re a pair, we can switch from bass and treble.”

Yes, yes, that’s right. Venti nods to himself. It isn’t impossible to do the harmonies on your own, but that’s complicated. Being a group does sound better.

“I’m glad to hear that you are both doing splendidly!”

The studio doors open to reveal a beaming [c]nette that appears… way too excited for her own good. Venti whispers that she is either has a plan or a surprise, having gotten used to the girl already.

“But did I hear you right? A pair? Nonsense, you’re not a pair anymore, boys!”

The two in the booth send each other confused glances. They even counted themselves to make sure that… well, there’s two of them. Isn’t that a pair? Aren’t they a pair?

[Name] giggles, yanking a certain blond in the room.

“He’s a latecomer, but you’ll welcome him, right?”

Aether refuses to look anyone in the eye as he fixates his gaze on you instead, the pink on his cheeks deepening in red. “Do you have to announce it like that?” he hisses, but you only laugh, to his chagrin.

Ah, he can feel the stares burning at his side.

“Oh please, it’s not like they can do anything to you, handsome.” You wink, further worsening the heat in his cheeks. His attempts to respond with a clear head are thrown out the window.

Venti is the first to acknowledge the new arrival, flabbergasted as he takes in the blond’s entire appearance. He only seems to blink out of his daze when you snap your fingers by the front of his vision.

“[Name]..” your childhood friend whispers after he pats Aether’s shoulder as if he’s making sure that he isn’t seeing things. “Does this mean… ?”

You nod, your smile warm. “Another addition to your lovely group? Yes, Ven.”

“Ah.. I can’t believe it..”

Patting Aether’s back, you nudge him to enter the place, assuring that he’ll settle in just fine with the group. You recall how you are able to convince him to join on your way to the studio with a contented sigh.

If Lumine hasn’t texted you about her sibling’s hung-up attitude about it—apparently, though Aether has second thoughts, he likes the idea of idols—you wouldn’t have hunted the blond down.

It is primarily the reason why you’ve been absent for almost the entire day so you’re glad that you’re finally able to track him down.

He was tucked away in the library humming bits of the melody you have played weeks ago, what wonder! Needless to say, you screeched ‘I knew it!’ as soon as you heard him humming the tune.

.. Yes, you might’ve been banned from the library afterward but all in a day’s work, no?

“This guy right here is a strong addition to this already wonderful team,”

You beam, lifting your chin with a laugh akin to a certain heiress who has a butler by her side twenty-four-seven.

“According to Lumine, he’s an ex-trainee from a known agency in their country but had to drop out since they were moving here.”

The information dazzles the two men who gape at a still flustered Aether. unexpecting of such news. And the latter had the gall to say singing was just a hobby! Who knew he was previously an idol in training!?

“I won’t be as surprised,” you laugh, tilting the transfer student’s chin to make him face your grin. “With these visuals, too? Ah, just seeing you makes me think that I saved a nation in my past life.”

A series of splutters stumble from Aether’s lips at this statement, the heat from his cheeks practically oozing as he shies away from your touch.

Pfft, you snort. Cute.

Kazuha stares at you, unblinking at the flowery words that fly by as if it’s your second nature. It is almost like you weren’t calling him husband weeks ago—

On the other hand, Venti, used to your shower of compliments and flirty advances, tugs the newcomer along with a grin of his own. Obviously eager to get started.

“An ex-trainee, hm? You’ll adapt easily, then, no?”

Kazuha ambles closer after getting out of his stupor, the printed lyrics already in his hand.

“What do you say we get started?”

And as Aether gets flanked, the shyness inside dissipates away, a sense of reassurance and comfort taking its place.

Once [Name] gives him another pat at the back and he starts to digest the amicable aura of the group, he finally smiles.

He’ll have to thank Lumine for texting the [c]nette later.

The week after, the transfer student has molded in the group with no visible difficulty. He says that it comes with the habit of moving from one place to another, so settling in comes to him like a breeze.

Understandably, with his knowledge as a previous idol in training, he’s quick to learn the ropes of the melodies he’s just taught as of recently, too.

Harmonizing with Venti and Kazuha isn’t premeditated and he flows along, natural in every way possible. With his wonderful addition to the group, the lyricist’s singing lessons go off the charts.

With the pace they are going at, it won’t be too long until they’ll start recording the song!

“Won’t it sound nicer if the technique here is more of a staccato? So that it matches the beat of the chorus?” you hear the blond conversing with Venti one break in the afternoon, going over the song and making a few changes.

“Well, it is pop, so why not?” the songwriter writes the mentioned technique beside a particular verse as a label, “We need more of that briskness at this part, too—right where the drums are highlighted the most.”

Their acknowledgement of your arrival comes with a simple wave before they are back in business. Seeing Aether work as if he’s been there as long as Kazuha nearly prompts you to laugh.

Nice to see them in their element. You muse, letting a bag down and taking the newly sewn clothes out along with some of its hangers.

“I think someone with a natural grating voice will fit this. Low, too…”

Venti’s hum is clipped.

“Kazuha, maybe?”

All three of you simultaneously pause at the proposition, envisioning the mentioned student with a lowered pitch and an added growl. It’s not too long until everyone is bursting into laughter.

Nearly collapsing on the chair, you smack your head, still wheezing.

Though Kazuha indeed has a voice a tad lower than the two, he’s more soft-spoken than… angry.

“I’m sorry, but no—that’s like trying to make a kitten roar like a lion.”

The imagery is cute.

Hm.. you won’t mind hearing Kazuha trying to do that, though. That will sound hot—

“I’ve retrieved the speaker, here you are.”

Oh gosh, that smooth voice—

Venti has his hands on his hips when he walks up to you and the silverette—who appeared out of nowhere—, taking the speaker and placing it on the table.

“Okay, okay, you flowery guy, stop that.” He slings your arm around his shoulder, keeping you upright. “Stop melting my poor bestie. I can’t have her leaving me, ya know!”

Kazuha flutters his eyes in your direction as he hears this, chuckling sheepishly when he hears you muttering ‘he’s so illegal I’m in pain’.

“My bad.”

The sight is amusing—and Aether thinks it’s a common scene playing out between the three. A mix of theatrics is thrown here and there, but it doesn’t seem exaggerated at all. Still enraptured, he takes a moment to admire his newly found friends.

At least, until he spots some clothes following a certain color scheme.

“Those are… costumes?”

That seems to bring you back to life.

Yelling out in remembrance that yes, you have finished sewing, you take one of the clothes and raise it, displaying its style for everyone to see. “Behold my work of art!”

The first one to react at it is—of course, Venti.

He is yelling out only seconds after you did.

“Is that a suit!?” he blinks wildly, “For-for a pop song?”

Gasping, you hold the clothes close, patting its soft fabric as if it were a puppy and mumbling things as if you are apologizing to it.

Afterward, you hiss at him. “The slander! I have obviously taken creative liberty with them so it’ll fit the song so no, although full suits would suit you- hehe, you get it? Sui-“

“[Name]!!”

You throw your free hand up.

“Calm down, second husband!” you beckon Aether to come to you, seeing that this particular clothing is tailored for him.

“Wha—how am I second!?” oh no, Venti has gotten feral.

You hang it at the blond’s side when he gets near, presenting its entire appearance with the future wearer. The smile on your face is impossibly wide the feral songwriter thinks you might as well swoon.

Miraculously, however, your self-restraint is showing.

“I only kept some aspects of the full suite, like the blazer, some tops, and ties but it all varies for everyone!” your figure is a blur as you dash from place to place.

Setting up the speaker with the laptop, getting the other clothes, and clearing the chairs away to create more space.

“Aether, haven’t you come up with a few moves already? Won’t it be good to rehearse with them on so you all get a feel of it?”

That has the other two looking at him and all of a sudden, he is back to being the tomato he was when you hauled him to the recording studio a week ago.

His manner of admitting that—yes, he has come up with some moves—is shy, but the two are already accustomed to his bouts of bashfulness. So, instead of voicing their eagerness to see the dance routine, they choose to push him to you.

Pink appears to be a common color on his face nowadays as you hand him the set of clothes. He takes it with a feeble sigh, excusing himself to the nearest restroom and leaving you with a pair of giddy men.

Huh. You snort, taking the other two articles of clothing and slinging them on their shoulders.

“What, you think it’s only Aether? Get dressed, men!”

Venti hurries away with a whine, though you knew him long enough to pinpoint that he is just as excited as you are. Only Kazuha excuses himself after thanking you for your hard work.

Guess who’s the husband material by that alone.

If only things are that easy.

SLAM!

Well, that was quick.

You aren’t surprised when it’s your childhood friend who traipses in with a gleam in his eyes.

His braided locks fit the navy blazer perfectly well, the shades of blue complementing the gold and teal accents of his attire.

The sight has you smiling.

You are one step closer to your dream. The statement goes unvoiced, but such words needn’t be said aloud for him to understand what you’re trying to deliver through sight alone.

He walks over upon your gesture, the grin on his face reminiscent of childhood days.

You pause at this, arching an eyebrow. You haven’t seen him grin like that in forever.

It’s nice.

“Are you happy, Venti?” you take something from your bag before inching closer to him once more.

The question has his smile dropping for a bit, a knowing glaze setting over his eyes. He watches as you fumble to pin a flora on his frilly white top, eventually responding.

“More than ever.” His whisper is sweet, “We’re not halfway done.. but I’m happy.”

His voice nearly wavers once he sees the pinned Cecilia on his shirt, though he is able to keep the tremors at bay by grasping your hand.

The entwined stare between the two of you is one of bitter acceptance.

“He’ll be happy too.” He smiles.

Your hand squeezes his own in return, nodding.

“Yeah, he will be.”

For a moment, the both of you just stand there in each other’s close presence. It’s only when the door opens do you step away to create some distance, whipping the usual smile as if nothing has happened.

You snap your fingers, humming, “Perfect—your simp-worthiness has just increased by a hundred. Come, Aether, go and dance!”

He nods. “Right.”

“You just want to see a hot guy in a suit dance and pop some moves.”

Your attempts of keeping your fantasies under the radar are yeeted out in the open just as you press the play button the speaker and Aether gets into position, though he nearly trips when he hears Venti babble about said fantasies.

The blond’s face is practically burning as you throw yourself to Venti, screeching for him to shut up. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned!

Your banter is reduced to background noise as the song starts playing, with a flustered Aether still stunned in place and a chuckling Kazuha too bemused to bother interfering.

The embarrassment has died down roughly half an hour later when you screamed a countdown of ‘three-two-one’ that has the transfer student scrambling to position on instinct.

You learned that this is the perfect way to have him ready for the dance routine—and additionally, a way to get Venti and Kazuha to shush and watch.

You find yourself doing this a lot of times in the next few practices over the weekends, watching as Aether guides them to particular moves. Unfortunately, you have little wisdom over dance—other than tango—so you can only preside over and keep watch.

They’ve all been getting better but a nagging voice in the back of your head screams a missing part, a lack of something in the bigger picture.

A lack of someone.

You’ve always been a respectful person, so you barely intrude in stranger’s lives unless there is a certain need to. But you may just shift your values if it gets having him to give this one a shot.

The universe butts in, however, with a literal ‘I don’t think you need to go that far’. Because one late afternoon, as the three are resting after a small dance practice and are now singing a run of the song, you see a lingering shadow by the door.

It leaves before you can open the door, so you’re stumped waiting for another opportunity.

And it does come! Surprisingly enough, right at the next practice.

But no, you didn’t choose to wait inside the room. You notice that the shadow somehow always appears during the dance practices.

So, after telling the boys that you’ll just be out to buy some refreshments—you did—you tell them to start practicing. On your way back with a bunch of food and drinks in bags, the muffled sound of footsteps prompts you to stop in your tracks.

It’s hard to detect it due to Venti’s music blasting, but your ears don’t fail you.

Mustering enough courage, you jump to the hall, out of the corner, to finally see the one who is often paying a visit to the music room.

The rustles of the bag overtake the silent hallway as you point at him.

His golden eyes are narrowed at the sight of you.

For some reason, he gets the first say before you could.

“Your friend is complaining about the emptiness of the song’s bridge,” he steps close, “And the routine looks like a failed attempt of a freestyler who calls himself a dancer.”

Okay, you can take criticism but how dare he insult sunshine boy—

“Listen here, I don’t care if you are professor’s son, but I’m going to punch you—” he glares and you scoff, “A shame my hands are occupied. Also!”

You clear your throat.

“Hello? There is an obvious difference between stalking and admiring, can you blame me for admiring someone as handsome as you three!?”

That shuts him up.

A ridiculously furious shade of red floods his cheeks as splutters begin leaving him in clipped exclamations.

You would’ve been flustered too, but you are too far gone in your passionate delivery that you started pushing him towards the door, much to his angry protests.

“You’re lucky I’m not as critical as you are so I won’t judge you for being shy. I mean, you want to join them, right?”

“What nonsense are you—! Wait, the door-!”

“Don’t tell me you don’t know how to open it, heavens, I have to do every—EEEEEE!”

Slam—thud-

CRASH!

The music in the room is quick to go to a pause as you and the dance major topples to the floor, crashing along with what you’ve bought. It is beyond unceremonious—

OH NO THE PUDDINGS YOU BOUGHT—oh, they’re alright.

“[Name]!” you hear Venti yell, “You klutz, you—..”

A cold breeze enters from the open door, dropping the temperature. Venti, for some reason, goes quiet as he helps you up, pushing the other raven-haired man away from you.

The other two take the bags from the floor, cognizant of the sudden chill.

Your friend’s grip is firm on your arms as he addresses, “Is there a reason why you’re here?”

“No.” Xiao’s stare is pointedly set on you, “I was passing by—”

“Lies!”

Both Aether and Kazuha nearly drop the bags when you cut off with an exclamation.

The dance major looks as if he has plans to kill you that instant, but this is the opportunity you’ve been itching to jump and seize. Besides, he’s already seen a lot and has been staying for—for how long?

“He was lounging around watching your practices for the past few days and even gave some blunt criticism just a while ago!”

Why else would he linger if he’s not interested?

…. To criticize? Actually, that seems very much like him, but you digress.

The expression on Venti’s face is indescribable after hearing you spill a revelation and for a second, you reckon that he isn’t even the Venti you know. Such a foreign—almost hostile—look on his countenance doesn’t suit him.

“Really, now?” he crosses his arms, “I’d like to hear it.”

The temperature drops further and your frantic stare collides with Aether and Kazuha, who are all but screaming in their eyes, ‘is it just me, or are they mad?’

You don’t know—heavens, you don’t know why Venti is so cross with Xiao and vice versa.

The dance major clicks his tongue and you freeze, aware of the glint in his optics. He’s not one to shy away from being blunt to the point of rudeness. Oh dear.

“Your song lacks power and that’s because your voices are all too cherubic, unfitting for the snips of the drums in the bridge. Have someone rap, don’t you think it’s a nice addition? He could do it.” Xiao tilts his head towards Aether before continuing.

“And your dance is shoddy. What kind of loose motion is that? You aren’t going to be singing and dancing at the same time on a stage since this is just-“ he glances at you, “A one time thing, right?”

Ah, so he did read the small paper you managed to sneak into his bag! Hoho.

“So devote more time in creating moves that will create an impact in the video.”

With his critique finished, he gravitates to silence, choosing not to look at anyone but Venti in the eye—as if he is urging the latter to talk back. And talk back he did.

“Aren’t you being too harsh? For someone not even in the group.”

The smile on your friend’s face is passive-aggressive, one that twitches when the dance major rolls his eyes with a scoff. The tension is too stifling to be in so you slither to the peaceful pair, taking a bottle of water before drinking.

Heavens know you need to rehydrate—first because it’s genuinely hot and second because of the hot men-

“I didn’t know honesty was such a bad thing.”

Venti is outright glaring at this point.

“There is a difference between blunt rudeness and honesty. I’m sure you remember the consequence of blurring the lines of those two, cousin.”

You choke on your water, immediately hitting your chest with your hand in hopes that it can alleviate the pain. Cousin… !? I didn’t know t h a t part.

Aether and Kazuha are stammering in surprise.

Is that why Venti is apprehensive of having Xiao in the group? Because he’s his cousin? That seems like a shallow reason, there has to be more underneath the surface.

Also—how come you did not know until now!?

Talking to the songwriter now is out of the question, not when he is engaged in this seething glare competition with his apparent cousin. Xiao looks one step close to committing murder—but then again, that’s how he always looks.

Cutting through this atmosphere is done by Aether, who clears his throat.

“It’s true, what he said,” he nods towards the dance major, acknowledging his critique with an explanation of his own. “I may still be warped in the mindset of becoming an idol that I forgot this was just a one shot. If I’m being honest, dance isn’t my strong point..”

It’s relieving how he isn’t as offended as you thought—but then again, he was a previous trainee. He must’ve already been introduced to harsh evaluations and has since then grown some thick skin against it.

Xiao’s stern stare is quick to subside as the blond passes his share of admission, and he nods, as well. “Learn how to work around your weakness and dislike, turn it to strengths.”

He doesn’t bother saying anything else afterward, opting to turn his heels with a side-eye thrown to his relative before heading to the door. Everyone else is frozen in place as his steps connect with the floor, stopping only when you throw yourself to the door, arms crossed.

His golden eyes twitch.

“… What do you think you’re doing?”

You catch Venti’s dismayed astonishment, openly gaping at your move.

Tilting your chin up, you press your back to the door, preventing the dance major from even attempting to leave. “You did say learn how to work around your dislike.”

Realization dips in his features at this, and he takes a glance behind him—already spotting Venti looking back with obvious displeasure. It seems like his sentiments on this situation are similar to his cousin; hell no are they staying in the same room.

Kazuha coughs. “[Name], I don’t think that’s safe—”

“If it means getting to leave, I may resort to force.” Xiao cuts him off, the glare returning in his eyes as he digs knives into your soul.

Oho? You chuck out a laugh and Venti groans aloud, already knowing the aftermath as you challenge the golden-eyed man.

“Try me, pretty boy.”

You’re proud to say that he failed trying to get out of that room.

a/n: ... a lot has happened, huh? what is this!? some lore!? and not just any lore- but there seems to be some history between xiao and venti that has strained their current relationship! AEE this may as well be a fic (facepalm)

Characters: Ayaka, Venti, Chongyun and xinyan Band!au, Modern!au. some character x gn!reader, but its mostly focused about them as a band

Author's note: was inspired by this picture below and a result of playing too much bang dream/bandori.. also i rewrote this bc the original one was "being their manager" but i think i'd get more ideas if i changed it to s/o, sooo now we're here :D I might make a pt.2 but im sure it'll be shorter than this

summary: Your s/o whom you knew for the longest time becomes an idol for a band, How would they act?

Ayaka/Vo.

She's also known as "The Kamisato Princess" due to her angelic look :0 The young girl needs lots of encouragement before setting on stage, venti usually helps her with boosting up the confidence last-minute. Her big brother, the infamous ayato also watches her perform, Giving her more the reasons to push thru and make beautiful music.

As for you, She'd be so happy if you watch her !! Its all the assurance she needs. If you're the loud type and you always cheer her on, she gets kinda embarrased but in reality she doesnt mind it that much. After all she does have all sorts of fans. Though she'd prefer to hear your praises after a concert in private, she feels much more comfortable that way.

Speaking of fans, at first she had so much trouble communicating with them, Making her occasionally stutter :( Once you see her look uncomfy while talking to fans, you try to push her away steadily, without making a scene and go in a corner, attempting to soothe her

She actually slowly improves communicating at public events, meetings, etc. because of you <3 let the girl take her time with this, And spend time with her equally. Even after all of what the both of you do, she'll thank you for being by her side. As long as it stays like that, rest assured she'll be happy.

Venti/Ba.

Okay pretend he isnt a god in this au hes just some random guy

He loves posting on social media, Lots of the content on his account are song covers, pictures you took of him or memes (which is what his supporters love about his account). He interacts with his fans in the comments each time, But ofc there are always haters. He seems like the type to fight back but in reality he just deletes the comment and ignores the account, not wanting a bad image.

He also wrote some of the songs that the band created !! the rest are from different multiple sources

Awards the band members with a glass of wine/juice/drink of choice and some snacks the day after going on a concert. Sometimes brings you with him! He believes it'll give them some motivation to move forward, Which does work most of the time, ...unless he gets drunk and starts scaring them with objects they would not appreciate

One time it was raining outside while they were having an after party at the kamisato estate so while drunk, this mf ran outside and got a FROG into the house and claimed it as his pet. Thoma had lots of trouble trying to find it after venti lost the frog a while after.

"And as the *hic* MoNdstadt saying g-goes... wait.. where did the frog go????"

Xinyan/Gt.

She's an amazing role model !!

She makes it a goal to like or reply all the comments, even the ones that are just "Great!!" or "amazing", she'd reply with a "thank you 🤍" or simply liking it

Like venti, she makes stuff for the band that she doesnt really need to do by herself, but she does it anyway because she adores what she does, the girl picks out outfits for the band i just know she has amazing taste in clothing. She also draws lots of ideas for merch, her designs always impress the other band members and you

She usually asks for your opinion before going on with making merch, creating tunes or just anything that she wants to improve later on. Xinyan trusts you so much with it, even if you dont know much about what she does.

Has so many ideas for her job, She can barely keep track of what she should try to push thru first. Its not like she doesnt enjoy it tho, hell, she loves it‼ Promotes the band's music everywhere, she likes to share it so more people can understand the art of music :))) shes really passionate about it

Chongyun/Dr.

Like ayaka, hes pretty shy on stage too. He's also kinda a perfectionist? When its time to finish rehearsals he still practices at home, thinking it wasnt good enough. If you catch him getting to focused, pls remind him to take a break! He often forgets to take one

Gets stressed pretty easily, he randomly doodles or eats cold food to relax himself. Loves going outside <3 even better if you accompany him, sometimes just going out for a walk gives him enough inspiration.

Super supportive to the rest of the band members ⊹.(⁎˃ᴗ˂⁎). ⊹ He shows it with words tbh, he says its much easier like that. Likes the idea of working together, He believes it'll solve problems much faster and produce more ideas, making the future of the band brighter. He aims for that desire, seeking to make people proud.

He has lots of pets !! He posts lots of pics of them on social media. Speaking of social media, He tries to keep your relationship a secret. Not that he doesnt trust you or anything, he just doesnt like the fact that you might get hated or something. He's aware that he probably wouldnt stand it if his s/o got hate :(

what about like the moment you open up about your relationship with kazuxiao the fans who were already seeing that happen were celebrating and on both of y'alls insta or something is where you announce and it's like a picture of all 3 of you chilling together or something

and then when they finally appear on a variety show they're just questioned throughly and they talk about how you guys meet and what they like about you

ok but the moments where you just feel sort of insecure since being an idol is hard and you're technically dating your seniors and you're just hit by the antis who are against yourself relationship so you lock yourself in your room in your dorm by yourself to cope. your roommate (can be whoever) contacts them both and they immediately come over and come in and offer soft kisses and soft murmurs of reassurance that they'll never leave you and that everything's gonna be ok.

side note i can see xiao just being a whole meme without realizing?? for like variety shows he's just known for his dead pan expression and then i can see him being so competitive on shows like running man..mans ripping tags left and right, while kazuhas just hiding in a weird spot or something

kazuha on the other hand i can see him being a troll, he likes to mess around with the hosts of the show and manages to mess up some of their plans, he also likes messing with his group members, where xiao likes to say that kazuha looks innocent but is a part of the devil line with venti

onto albedo i can see him like answering questions in his vlive and fans realize that a lot of his songs are more romantic and sort of pining?? and they're asking where the motivation is from. he answers that it's just something that he saw recently so he felt motivated (it wasn't the fact that he had realized that he was 100% in love with you)

but like all of this mans inspiration comes from you, he's had multiple songs dedicated to you before your relationship was even open to the public, and when your relationship finally does, it just clicks for fans and it suddenly makes sense, your ship name trends worldwide for the day

but how you and albedo met, i can see both of you guys being in the industry already and you guys are sort of know each other but it was for a one time off collab with other artists involved so you didn't really talk with each other. like i said before albedos a solo artist while i can see you being a part of a popular group already. but then both of your companies decided to do another collab and especially picked you two since you guys already worked on a collab before.

at first it was like awkward since albedos really socially awkward but then things click when you guys start writing the song together. everything just matches so well?? and you guys just compliment each other?? and that's when you learn of albedo just staying at the studio so late so you often bring food. this leads to you guys getting closer and albedo even stops his work just to talk to you more. when your song comes out and everyone is waiting for the stage, there's just so much tension?? but the good kinda and everyone is awed by the song and the vocals coming from you and albedo.

i can also see the both of you guys appearing on variety shows together too, like appearing on a show where you two travel to another place and experience the culture there, with albedo being your tour guide and showing you all the famous places (one of the many times where fans were awed by his research and knowledge) and then if you guys were to appear together again after you guys reveal your relationship, a lot of the times they show idols as they wake up, they'll see you and albedo being clingy af to each other.

on another side note, albedos totally a troll on variety shows, he likes messing around with the hosts and other contestants since a lot of the time he's not really interested in the show itself, it's more for publicity. however, when he first appeared on a show with you fans noticed that he actually seemed interested for once and that's where your ship name started.

albedos totally a golden child tho, he's like basically perfect in everything so a lot of the times variety shows don't catch him slipping, however the one time that he did was when you were mentioned, the clip of with his ears bright red was trending for a couple of days :)

Okay okay but like for the 'announcement' picture, what if it's like those photo booth pics (but like each picture you need to scroll through like on Insta) where it's cute and wholesome! The three of you are having fun wearing some silly glasses or hats, doing peace signs or finger hearts....and the very last photo is the three of you sharing a kiss- or, at least trying to.

It's sweet, a little silly, and most of your fans take it really well! After all, they can see the chemistry that you share and can't deny that the three of you would have a good relationship.

As for the insecurities of dating your seniors, Kazuha and Xiao are quick to knock back any of those worries. They love you so, so much and hate the fact that something like that makes you doubt for a single second. If anyone ever tries to bring it up, you know that they're going to immediately quip back.

Naturally, you're roomed with Venven :D He's technically an up-and-coming after he stopped doing idol stuff for a few years, so not only does he know the ropes, but he's also one of your biggest fans and biggest supports (outside of Kazuha and Xiao).

Though he's silly and light-hearted, he's quick to recognize when things are serious and need handling.

So as soon as he sees that you're not doing so great or if he notices the comments on your posts are going in a bad direction, he speed dials Xiao and the two of your boyfriends are right at the door in under 15.

Not only are they fast about it, but they have all your favorite snacks, a movie or two, some popcorn, and a ton of love and affection because they'll be damned if their love is going to be affected by some asshole's comments about their love life! What do they know anyway??

Actually this all could work too if Kazuha and Xiao are part of 4NEMO-

That'd cause so much more ruckus- not only is half of one of the most popular idol groups are taken, but by the same person??? And each other??? Man, that's wack.

BUT THE GAMESHOWS

Xiao would most certainly be super intense with those. He just can't help it--competition drives his blood and makes something snap in him. He's dead serious about doing well, regardless of the game. I actually have never watched said game shows, but--

Like...he's out for blood. No one is safe. Not even you or Kazuha if you're on opposing teams, though he'll be a bit more gentle. Maybe even with the hint of a smile while you have an expression of utter shock at the fact that he's just so fast-

Or if it's not a game show and instead you're doing some sort of idol group activity with a few others to get to know each other?

Someone suggests ping pong and, knowing how competitive Xiao gets, he's pitted up against Tartaglia and man. That's scary. There's no doubt that someone would clip the video and make it into an overly-dramatic retelling complete with music.

Hilarious.

As for Kazuha! He'd be a bit of a mish mosh! He enjoys poking fun at others, and he's so sly! Those poor hosts don't realize that he's goading them on, but sure enough--he is. Who knew that his charming smile and mild-mannered attitude could be so devastating?

But even then, he's mostly wholesome! There's a lot of little clips, mostly of your doing, of him in a 'kiss the chef' apron getting caught off guard while cooking something up. The videos aren't great because you're giggling while recording and he ends up placing the ladle down calmly before wrapping you up in his arms. Half the video ends up being the two of you laughing and joking while it's pointed at a weird angle towards the counter.

Sometimes it'll point just right and you'll get a half-blurred view of Xiao sitting at the kitchen island with his reading glasses perched on his nose and book forgotten. He tends to get up and join in for a few smooches before reminding Kazuha of the food that's still cooking.

Albedo!! He absolutely is the golden child. He's fantastic handling things under pressure in a cool, calm manner. Handsome, charismatic, incredibly smart--man's hit all the stops and just keeps going.

It's not until it comes out that the two of you are together that his cool façade (hardly one, though) falters and at the mere mention of you, he'll go soft. There's a tenderness in his eyes, a small smile on his lips, and his blush? Absolutely adorable. How can anyone object when he's obviously so in love with you?

And the idea you mentioned with the two of you traveling and experiencing stuff together sounds so cute (':

He particularly enjoys exploring new cuisine, so expect him to feed you some food from his plate-

There's also a few times where you two have gotten lost in the new places, more because you're both so busy taking in the sights to realize you've taken five wrong turns- But then you make it into a whole adventure, foregoing the map and deciding to wander around. What better way to discover and learn about somewhere than getting lost and wandering?

You find quite a few hidden gems this way since otherwise you'd be hitting more popular areas!

Wait- do they really show idols waking up???

Ahh regardless, Albedo's definitely a cuddler. He loves it, can't get enough of it. It's not often that he gets a good night's rest, but with you it seems like he's fully recharged and ready for the day! It's cute too because it doesn't matter--big spoon or little spoon, you on his chest or him resting on yours. Even a few times with you facing each other with your hands intertwined.

I also agree that Albedo would mess with the game show's hosts and contestants. Not only would he, but he'd be entirely smug about it (after all, we need to have that #smugbedo going on).

No doubt, there's been times where the cameras even focus/zoom in on him where he's sitting because he's got that smirk on his face.

I'm thinking a lot about how the Archons decide who qualifies for Godhood and receive Visions and how different they are from each other. I've been looking for similarities between the elemental units and have actually noticed some neat things.

So Imma drop a list of my thoughts and if y'all have any I'd love to hear 'em~

Lord Barbatos (The Anemo Archon) we don't have too much frame of reference (which is also in character for him really because venti doesn't really...care for the god stuff ha.) He seems to give Visions to those who are whole hearted in their beliefs and live their life with their head high, proud of the life they live.

Examples: Sucrose and her dedicated pursuit of science, Jean and her devotion to Mondstat (a part of him may have also been reminded of old friends...)

The Pyro Archon (The Lady of Fire) seems to have similar qualifications, but leans more towards those who are more forceful in their beliefs and fully act on them, committed without question and against the odds. (makes sense for the God of War ahaha;;;)

Examples: Xiangling and her cooking despite others finding it questionable, Xinyang and her pursuit of Rock n' Roll despite everyone in Liyue finding it a racket, Diluc and his desire to protect the people of Mondstadt even now.

Rex Lapis (The God of Contracts) actually took a bit more thinking than I'd like to admit, but he seems to acknowledge people who have their eyes locked on their goal and are dedicated to achieving it, thus securing the foundation to planning a path there.

Examples: Ningguang and her rise to power from poverty, Noelle and her devotion to her maid duties

The Dendro Archon is the one we have the Absolute Least info for (MiHoYo give us Baizhu I swear to god you have cucked me for Too Long), so the only trend I've noticed is (no suprise here, oh God of Wisdom) knowledge and the pursuit thereof.

Examples: Baizhu and his knowledge of medicine (give me the l o r e), Yaoyao (an upcoming character) is apparently being mentored by Ganyu, an Adeptus

Baal (The Raiden Shogun) was a bit of a mystery to me to be honest. I thought she might pick people with the desire for or respect for comradery (which might still play a part tbh. The God of Eternity is bound to get lonely after all...) After a bit more thought though, I believe she granted her powers to those who want to carve their own path, not paying mind to what the people around them believe and living by their own truth.

Examples: Keqing and her desire to live without the rule of their god, Lisa and her leaving of academia to find her truth her own way, Beidou and her pursuit of a sea beast

The Hydro Archon was another mystery to me. I mean, what do our odd assortment of Hydro Units have in common? Well, after some thought, I can to the conclusion that the Hydro Archon values people who work hard at what they do which is striving for the best, for themselves or for others.

Examples: Barbara becoming an idol to make others happy, Mona seeking to be recognized for her astrology, Xingqui's devotion to become a true hero of justice (which I'm sure the God of Justice thinks very highly off)

The Cryo Archon (The Tsaritsa) is actually the reason I started thinking about this. I noticed a small pattern with the Cryo units, and given the somewhat...distorted logic The Tsaritsa has, it started making sense. The Cryo connection is pain. But the reason, shocking as it may be, is The Tsaritsa gifts these people her power so they can have the strength to ease or overcome their pain in hopes that they no longer have to suffer.

("Her Royal Highness the Tsaritsa is actually a gentle soul. Too gentle, in fact, and that's why she had to harden herself. Likewise, she declared war against the whole world only because she dreams of peace.")

Examples: Kaeya's mental struggle of who to align with, Diona's struggle to come to terms with her father's live of alcohol, Chongyun's physical condition, Qiqi Literally Died and was brought back to life

So these are my thoughts on the Archons and their blessings of visions. (I swear I'm gonna make a GI OC that's just an Archon Researcher and it's just gonna be m e) If y'all have any thoughts or input or just thought it was neat, I'd love to know~

so... i ventured into the vast world of Google looking for some good GI fic recs... only to find such a pitiful amount that i was promptly devastated. therefore, the solution is to make my own! :D

My Genshin Universe Ship Dynamics

I've given so much info about ChiLumi, but I definitely wanna expand on everyone else, because their stories are interesting too! So, without further ado, here are the ship dynamics in as little time as possible. This is a long one, so it'll be below the cut! Thanks!

ChiLumi (Childe x Lumine)

Lumine is a sweet dazzling ray of sunshine who is a bit of a chaotic gremlin at times. Loves her boyfriend dearly and isn't afraid to make it known. Usually flirts with him without hesitation.

Childe is a simp. Usually, he is the one in charge and having everyone listen to him, but he will immediately bend to Lumine's will. Also responsible for most of the following ships out of protecting Lumine from any 'love rivals'

JeaLuc (Jean x Diluc)

Small feelings existed before Diluc's whole father incident happened. Then, the feelings got crushed. They hide their small lingering feelings behind mutual respect

Jean heavily respects Diluc and is eager to work together with him due to how he displayed himself in his younger years. She hopes that one day, that fire may come back to him.

Diluc is so tired of everyone and everrything, but he's tolerant with Jean. He sometimes checks up on her as she can exhaust herself on her duties. Deep down, and I mean REEEAAAL deep down, he still cares. He just doesn't want to admit it. (Tsuntsun? Kuu... tsun? Tsunkuu? I... I don't know)

Heavily advocated and supported by Childe. The ex-Fatui gives constant advice to Jean since she's the one more likely to make a move rather than Diluc.

If they were together, it would be one of the more mature, civil relationships. also klee is their surrogate child while alice is away fight me on this

AlbeCrose (Albedo x Sucrose)

Master and apprentice dynamic (obviously)

Albedo admires Sucrose for her work ethic and also sometimes sketches her when she isn't paying attention. He's not entirely aware of what love is, so his feelings are questionable to him. He would love it if Sucrose called him by his name, though.

Sucrose admires Albedo and looks up to him, to the point where that idolization grew into a crush. She tries to ignore it, though, because Albedo is her teacher, and she is his student.

Childe is not satisfied with Sucrose's conclusion and has since stolen pages from Albedo's sketchbook (with the help of oh-so convenient wind from Venti) that had notes about Albedo's feelings for Sucrose on it.

To his dismay, they are not a thing yet.

...he will keep trying, though.

XiaoYu (Xiao x Ganyu)

Cold, harsh tsundere with a delicate, but well-mannered partner

The ones closest to fruition. Lantern Rite helped move their friendship along and they're now in territory that can be assumed as 'more than friends, but questioning if lovers'

Xiao pushes away Ganyu on instinct because of his karma, but he does care. Ganyu sees this and continues moving closer to prove his karma won't hurt her and she's perfectly fine.

They also both babysit Qiqi and look like a family. Very cute.

HEAVILY advocated by Childe--Xiao is the worst love rival TO DATE

ZhongGuang (Zhongli x Ningguang)

A himbo god and an intelligent reincarnation of a God his intelligent wife that will point out everything (see John Mulaney for example)

Advocated by both Childe AND Lumine

Neither has made a move yet...

Both hold a mutual respect for each other. Both have expressed interest (albeit not in front of each other) of giving the other a chance, but otherwise, no actions have been taken

Zhongli, however, seems to be the one pining a bit more noticeably than Ningguabg. Sometimes, one can catch him staring at her as she looks out upon the city of Liyue Harbor as if mesmerized.

Ningguang may also have had a dream or two about him. She hasn't dove into explicit detail though.

These two old folk need a bit more time than everyone else.

BenBar? BarNett? ...BenAra? (Bennett x Barbara)

Debated between BenneFischl, but Bennett had custom-made balloons on his birthday with Barbara on it, so Childe went through with this instead (plus, he does owe Barbara for her help with him and Lumine, so...)

Plus, he does think her smile is dazzling

Barbara is super concerned about Bennett's wellbeing and constantly patches him up on their journey. Bennett just shrugs it off and says it's no problem

Both are on the younger side, so they're not looking to rush into a relationship. Currently, they are best of friends, with some crushes on each other (Bennett pining over Barbara just a tiny bit more)

Give them time. They're young.

Chongqiu / Xingyun (Chongyun x Xingqiu)

Buddies who are totally not gay

Chongyun is, despite popular belief, not very forward in pursuing Xingqiu. It's actually Xingqiu who does the pursuing.

Xingqiu found a bunch of romance novels, took them as relationship advice, and is torturing Chongyun with it.

Give Chongyun some time to reaffirm that yes, this is love, and yes, Xingqiu bullying him is just because Xingqiu thought the tropes in romances were all totally correct

It's basically Chongyun, the panicked gay, and Xingqiu, the confident gay

Ramber (Razor x... Amber?)

For reasons unknown, Childe has this down in his matchmaking notebook. No other information was actually revealed...

Lumine seems to have penned this as well?

Amber and Razor have apparently been reported to have been hunting together after Razor was sent to adapt to human society. He seems to rely heavily on Amber for that, since she's one of his only human friends around his age

It's basically Amber and her dog, but for some reason, Amber doesn't seem to mind pampering him every once in a while...

Not heavily advocated yet and needs more evidence, according to Childe and Lumine

ScaraMona (Scaramouche x Mona)

Made by Childe as a failsafe in case Scaramouche joins their expedition.

He wants to make sure Scaramouche does not woo Lumine, so he decided that Mona would be best to handle him.

If they got together, their dynamic would definitely be a bickering old married couple that never gets along but still loves each other

BONUS: Dainther (Dainsleif x Aether)

Supported by Childe--he won't push it, but he hopes it works out for Dain

Dain reminisces on the times he spent with Aether and constantly wishes to go back. He treasures Aether with all his heart and hopes that someday, they will be reunited again.

Dainsleif loves Aether and misses him dearly. He pines over his missing traveling companion.

Aether...

...well, Aether's feelings aren't relevant, now are they?

He set those aside long ago, anyway. He has a duty to uphold.

Summary: Idol!Xiao finds out that his close friend Venti wants to join a new troupe after the two of them being solo for a while

The cold night air bit at the young man’s nose as he pulled his forest green hood down over his eyes. He could see his breath float away in the air as he sighed and checked his watch.

He’s late.

The sound of sneakers smacking the pavement got louder in his ears until someone ran up to him out of breath. “Xiao! I’m so sorry! Practice ran long and then Kaeya started an argument with Lisa and then--”

Xiao put a hand to silence him and returned his gaze to the frozen river under the bridge. “It’s fine. Must be nice to have a group like that.”

The new arrival laughed lightly and nudged him. “You make it sound like I’m on stage preforming with them!”

“It’s not like Jean won’t let you.”

He put his hands behind his head, his teal braids blowing gently in the wind. “Eh, my time has come and gone for this business.”

Xiao glared at him. “You make us sound old!”

It was true, the two young men no longer preformed with their original groups. Xiao’s group “Yaksha 5” had disbanded as the other four members all left the idol business and his new band “Adepti” only met once a month to write songs. No more live performances. The other young man, Venti, used to preform under the stagename “Barbatos” with the famous idol group “Celestia”, but he and the other remaining senior member - a tall man who went by the stagename “Morax” - had left a while ago. Now, Morax went by Zhongli and occasionally wrote songs with Adepti while Venti became a choreographer with a popular rookie troupe named “Favonius”.

The two stood there in silence watching the lights of streetlamps dance off of falling snowflakes before them. Venti tucked his hands into his jacket pockets and sighed. “I got an offer from a new group of guys who want me on stage with them. They say they want me on soprano.”

Xiao gave him a sideways look. “And? I thought you swore off preforming or something when you left Celestia.”

Venti balled his hands into fists inside his pocket and didn’t meet his eyes. “I think… I met the center of this group; he’s a really nice guy. They’ve got a manager already and apparently have done some music with Jean. She’s the one who got me in contact with them.”

“So you’re gonna join them?” His voice sounded distant, lonely. There weren’t many solo performers in the idol world. Xiao and Venti had been riding their residual fame from their past groups for years and hadn’t really signed contracts with a single troupe from how sourly they left their past groups. Xiao thought they were special in that way… but Venti was the one still getting new offers for shows while Xiao had to almost beg to be an opening.

Venti looked him in the eyes. “I haven’t agreed to yet.”

“Really?” Xiao scoffed. “And here I thought you would be all over the chance to start a new group.”

The shorter man squinted his eyes. “I told them I’m only joining up if my conditions are met!”

Xiao’s eyebrows shot up. “You have standards?”

“Of course! And very high ones at that!” Venti pouted. “How else do you think I put up with you?”

Xiao felt warm in the face at that remark, he only prayed that the darkness of the night hid this from Venti.

Suddenly, Venti’s volume dropped to a whisper and he began to fidget with his fingers. “My conditions were that you had to join the group as well. They want to call the group ‘4NEMO’ and they were still searching for a fourth guy so I figured…”

He trailed off as he caught Xiao staring at him with a bewildered expression. Venti began to panic. Did he just hurt Xiao’s pride? He knew that the taller man didn’t like to accept help from others, but for some reason he thought this time would be different.

Venti was yanked from his thoughts as Xiao closed the distance between them and engulfed him in a hug. “My my, what a sudden show of affection!”

Xiao had did it to keep Venti from seeing the red on his cheek. Truth be told, he was deeply touched by Venti turning down a chance to play more shows if he couldn’t be by his side, but he was too inexperienced at returning kindness. A hug seemed to suffice, right?

“Thank you, Venti, that means the world to me.”

“Does it really?” The words spilled from his mouth before he even finished thinking them. He didn’t want Xiao to agree to something as serious as starting a new idol group with strangers just to appease him.

Xiao pulled away just to lean down and press the softest of kisses to Venti’s lips. The shorter of the two thought his heart was going to explode. Sure, the two had danced around each other for as long as they knew each other and Venti would have been a fool to not notice Xiao’s attractiveness during that time. But they had never been more than friends-who-flirt-with-each-other.

The taller pulled away with a red face as he searched Venti’s eyes. “Does that convince you?”

Venti nodded briskly, his brain not exactly processing what had just happened. It seemed Xiao’s brain was only just then catching up to his actions because he suddenly stepped back and covered his mouth with his hands, his eyes widening to a horrified expression.

“I didn’t--I mean--I--Sorry!” He blurted out from behind his hands.

Venti touched his own lips and blinked a few times before thinking of what to say. “So you really want to be in a group with me, huh?”

Xiao pulled his hands down and while his face was contorted into a snarl, his cheeks still burned red. “And? So what?! Don’t let it go to your head, I just need the money!”

The shorter man giggled and grabbed Xiao’s hand, lacing their fingers together without any resistance. “Sure, whatever you say~”

Despite his harsh tone, Xiao pressed the side of his body next to Venti’s to b closer to him. “So, who are the guys in this group?”

Venti hummed. “Well, the center is this blonde guy named Aether who’s new in town. I heard he’s done some work for Favonius in the past and that he’s friends with the girls in Qixing. The other guy is named Kazuha. He ran with Beidou’s crew for a bit to get away from the whole Tenryou Doxxing drama and now he’s teaming up with Aether to form 4NEMO. I think the manager is Sucrose. You know, Albedo’s manager? She’s picking up the job for this group too.”

“Hmm, impressive. Sounds like a good group. I think I’ll like it.” Xiao looked out to the distance.

Venti beamed. “Wait, you mean it?”

Xiao felt himself turning red again. “Ah, yeah, sure. I know Aether, we did so collab work once, I trust him.”

Venti reached up and poked his cheek. “And because you’ll be dancing with me?”

Xiao grabbed his hand and leaned down again. “I wouldn’t mind getting back into the idol drama if you were by my side. Maybe I just want you.”

The shorter man went red in the face and tried to laugh that last statement off. “Wow, that’s some confession, huh? It’s a good thing I feel the same way, otherwise I’d tease you to death over this.”

Xiao let go and his face dropped into a shocked expression. “You’re serious? You feel the same?”

Venti laughed out loud, hugging his sides. “Yes, dummy! Otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered with all of this! I thought all of that was clear when you kissed me! Gods you are slow!”

Xiao frowned and crossed him arms. “I was just… you’re very hard to read!”

Venti stopped laughing and grabbed the sides of Xiao’s hood, pulling him down to eye level. “And you are like an open book. It’s funny to watch you, Xiao. You can be very suave and smooth with your words, but other times you get all flustered and you close up. It’s cute!”

“I’m not cute.” He didn’t pull away, just adverted his eyes.

Venti made a disagreeing noise and closed the distance between them. This time the kiss was softer, smoother and had much more passion behind it. Venti made a happy noise when he felt Xiao wrap his arms around his back and moved to place his own arms around Xiao’s neck.

Xiao found himself sinking more and more into Venti’s embrace. The taste of cheap wine on his breath, the way his mouth molded to hold him and the way his hands gently caressed the back of his head was all too much for him to handle. His anxieties melted away as he pulled Venti’s smaller frame flush against his own. For just how long had he been waiting to do this? Ever since they met, Venti had always been flirty and open about his emotions, but Xiao had quickly deduced that it was all a mask he put on to keep himself from being hurt by those around him. Xiao was similar in that sense, always acting aloof and angry to keep people from getting too close to him. But when he was with Venti… none of that mattered. When he was with Venti, he didn’t care how badly things ended with Yaksha 5, he didn’t notice the way his ratings dropped, he didn’t pay attention to the social media slandering.

Venti was like some sort of wind spirit: always floating from one place to the other without a concern. Xiao wanted to learn more, to be more like him. And to him, joining this new 4NEMO group was the fastest way to do that.

a/n: i’m supposed to be working on something else but this brainrot got to me first... anyways, i’m assigning their visions + weapons based off a few fan theories i’ve read~ please enjoy my word dump! :D

okay so we’re starting off with our leader! hmm... i’d say that he has a geo vision

why? idk, i’m half sure it’s based off how calm and composed he is; i do kinda think jungwon is a picture of maturity and elegance (he literally has to take care of six children wdym)

it was kinda hard for me to choose a weapon because i kept going back-and-forth from sword to polearm, but my final pick for him would be polearm

yes this would mean that he is zhongli

a polearm would probably suit him because i see him as the kind to want some kind of control over his weapon (not saying he can’t control a sword). at the same time i feel like he’d want something lightweight which won’t bring him down

i think he’d work with the knights of favonius. working with the liyue qixing could also work for him, but considering the tension between the adepti and the qixing + the social climate of liyue makes me think that he’d want somewhere more calm

acting grandmaster jungwon? i’m down for it

spends time near the mondstadt church; he likes the peace and quiet of it

this one theory i’ve read says that hydro vision users have a strong sense of morality and justice (i guess i also interpreted it as balance) and heeseung seems like the kind of person who does

for weapon, i think he’d prefer to use a sword. we see that he’s good in a lot of areas when it comes to being an idol, so he’d perhaps want that versatility in the weapon he uses as well

hello xingqiu (wait i kinda think this fits)

i don’t see him particularly associating himself to any organization, so i think he’d simply be a wanderer. he goes from country to country as a vagabond, battling monsters along the way in order to perfect his skills

at the same time, i also see him making a lot of friends and having a bunch of connections from just about any corner of the land (more to acquaintances i suppose? heeseung doesn’t seem like the kind to let people in very quickly)

is probably very curious on elemental reactions and might be studious in a way; he would want to learn alchemy

likes stopping by mondstadt’s library when he needs to look up on something. probably keeps in contact with alchemists too

oh man this is going to probably be very stereotypical

pyro vision, hands down. i was considering an electro vision for him at first but the amount of passion he has in doing the things he loves (primarily hip-hop) screams pyro to me

he would also have a claymore because let’s be real, he’d want something to get the job done quick; claymores are literally the weapon that causes the most damage

yeah he’d be diluc. or xinyan. whatever your pick is

bonks monsters for fun, fight me on this

association... i think he’d be a part of the adventurer’s guild. he strikes me as the kind of person who’d want some kind of reward for something he does for fun (in this case, mora. and a bunch of other items you can get from katheryne once you complete your daily commissions)

this is probably how he meets all his friends. if he wasn’t a part of any association, i don’t think he’d have many (not saying that he’s unable to make friends, he’d choose not to unless necessary)

strives to be a well-known adventurer, probably takes up more commissions than the average one

likes spending time in places with good ambience, food, and booze. probably is a regular at angel’s share and liyue’s street food stalls on days he comes to town

jake

i think he’d have an electro vision. it’s something about the way he fiercely cares for other people that makes me think that this suits him best

okay hear me out but i think he’d be amazing with a bow and arrow. he seems to have the tenacity and upper body strength for it, and i don’t think he’d particularly want something that could do a quick kill, like a sword or claymore per se

uhh... yeah he’d be fischl, i suppose. idk this realization was a bit weird to me but it doesn’t seem so far off from happening

sometimes uses his skills to shoot at fruit from trees; it’s a pretty good party trick

association-wise i don’t think he’d wanna join any, tbh. he’d be an “everyone’s friend” kinda guy. unlike heeseung who’d have acquaintances from all around, jake would generally want to befriend different kinds of people (helps around wangshu inn sometimes because of this)

still though, i think he hangs with members of the adventurer’s guild a lot

don’t be surprised if you catch him befriending a member of the fatui-

i also see him really immersing himself in the culture of each country he visits

he’s the guy who pets all the animals, especially the dogs

also seems like the kind to purchase or collect raw meat just to give to the stray animals he meets on his travels

okay so i know this is stereotypical but... cryo vision. honestly, having a geo vision would also be possible but remember that one time childe said something around the lines of the goddess of cryo having such a warm heart and she loved so much to the point it froze? yeah i think i’m basing him off the tsaritsa-

weapon would be a sword. i considered choosing a polearm for him but i think he’d want something slightly heavier that would get the job done, but not necessarily a claymore. do i think he has the capacity to use a claymore if he wanted to, though? sure why not

when i thought of stuff to write for him i kinda think that he’d like liyue a lot; the tradition and order feel like home to him. this also fits lore because there’s more fatui appearances in liyue compared to mondstadt

also seems like the kind to wander around the city when things start to calm down for the day; if he’s not being tasked on a mission, he sometimes likes to head out to huaguang stone forest

okay i think he’d have an anemo vision (and this is not because he reminds me of venti). there was another theory that said that anemo vision-holders are hard workers who sometimes don’t give themselves enough rest, and sunoo seems to make the cut. he’s crazy hardworking at things he know he’s lacking at and strives to improve

i think he’d have a catalyst (yes!! we need male catalyst characters!!); i can see him absolutely fascinated by the way catalysts work like... “there’s no solid object engineering the attacks so... what is that? it seems so cool!”

so yeah he’d be sucrose, hello

i also think he’d want to be a part of the adventurer’s guild! it keeps him busy plus he likes helping people :D

would then be introduced to jay (and possibly jake) when he’s assigned to do a commission with him. honestly he’d prefer doing commissions with others rather than doing them alone

has a hard time killing monsters because he finds them cute (especially slimes). i think he’d also empathize with hilichurls to a degree

i see him residing in mondstadt most of the time; he’d also like talking to the locals a lot (has a high rep because of this)

loves trying out local cuisine, some of his favorite dishes include sweet madame and zhongyuan chop suey!

so i initially thought he’d have a pyro vision, but after some time i figured he’d have an electro vision instead. i think it’s this weird sentiment i feel that he’d protect his passions with his life (in this case, dancing; he’s literally inseparable from it), so there’s that

totally looks like the kind to have a polearm. he definitely would want something lightweight that he could lowkey flex with

sadly he doesn’t have a genshin character twin yet :(

would also not have any affiliation whatsoever; he just traverses the land like the free spirit he is

Carol was born in Mondstadt however at a young age she and her parents went to Liyue a lot for vacations so she took huge interest in the country. She studied as a researcher at first but then decided to become a Tourist Guide, showing her customers around the country and customs. She can be quite excited about certain Topics, for example Rex Lapis or the Jade chamber, however she keeps a Level head when presenting facts. Her thirst for knowledge is hard to quench and she has tons of theories she loves to make Up in her head. Is a terrible Cook, but more in the way that her good looks horrible but actually tasted good.

Lotus flowers are her favourite and she tends to build them in her Outfits a Lot.

xiaoven? opinions

posting here because if i mention this on twitter they might go feral

ok i have a very nuanced take on this

just to start off, I am a multi-shipper. i ship almost everyone with traveler (either of them, but I play as lumine) and I am on board with almost all popular ships in the fandom (beigguang, xingyun, jean/lisa, jean/diluc, etc.).

i just can't with xiaoven though for some odd reason. i think they're cute, I love the fanart. i just cant seem to understand how it's mutual? like maybe xiao has a good amount of feelings for venti, maybe originating from the fact that xiao feels indebted to him from the start? perhaps in the past he yearned for that a lot? but i also think it's within venti's character to reject him, or anyone for that matter.

maybe it's a good time for me to bring up that despite being a multi-shipper, I don't ship venti with anyone ;-; I've seen a BUNCH of xiaoven, I've seen him shipped with barbara, traveler, etc. but i can't get on board with any of them, and it's almost always because of venti. I feel like he's 1) asexual and aromantic (i get that it's a spectrum, and I think venti's on the extreme side) and 2) even if he canonically isn't, he's just too much of a free-spirit to be tied on to a romantic and/or sexual relationship with anyone. In my head (so yeah, feel free to disagree?), all his interactions with other characters are just varying levels of platonic. he helped xiao multiple times and maybe visits him whenever he can, but that's just because he's a caring individual, or you can interpret that xiao's really special to him, it's just not romantic.

which is also why my favorite xiaoven fanart is of xiao yearning and venti's either unaware of his feelings or just polite but unwilling to reciprocate. like that one au where venti's a popular idol and xiao is a streamer guy who's like reacting to venti's videos or smth. or that one where xiao struggles to verbalize his feelings and venti's just :) ???

whenever i see fanart where venti is more of the pursuer, it just feels off to me. venti seems like a clingy friend, but definitely not a clingy partner, if he would ever be a partner. when the fanart looks like they both have equal feelings for each other, i think it's cute, but it also doesn't seem like venti. like all this is kinda leading to me might as well saying venti became a sort of mentor/savior figure for xiao but he never went beyond that.

(also also i feel like barbara is in the same area as venti? that is if you interpret barbara's idol persona as more prominent as opposed to her nurse/deaconness persona. i also don't ship anyone with her, maybe Bennett[?] if you go with her nurse persona more)

additionally, all of this is in the past, and xiaoven's present interactions are post-rejection, where xiao's still a little sad/disappointed but ultimately accepting, and venti's trying to be his usual self, trying to cheer him up, reassuring that just because he can't return romantic feelings, doesn't mean that xiao's not special to him. to me, this also explains xiao's voiceline about venti, where he's like reminded of venti and his tunes and he's just like "yeah, forget it" [rocky past, I'm trying to move on].

this is also why xiao/traveler is more effective for me. xiao, like, deep inside him, longs to be cared for. this is something that venti could provide, but when the feelings escalated, he's just not on board anymore. xiao/traveler adds something to the dynamic of making traveler sort of a more inexperienced individual, so this time xiao has to be that caring one, as much as he is the one being cared for. to xiao, perhaps, the traveler at the start was just another /mortal/ who he had to protect, which is why xiao seems stern, maybe even a bit hostile, in the beginning. but this time this /mortal/ keeps bumping into him, isn't completely helpless, cares for his safety, genuinely likes being around him, wants him to have fun etc. and since xiao didn't have indebted feelings from the beginning, he doesn't feel as shy around the traveler. sure, he still struggles a bit with interactions with anyone, but with the traveler it's just more natural. xiao feels less of the mega warrior that he is around mortals, or wounded traumatized guy around venti. the traveler's not as helpless as other /mortals/ but they're not a /higher being/ like venti. it's a nice middle ground that allows xiao to not be on either extreme, so being with the traveler feels comfy.

so yeah. my two cents.

PS. in my head this is aether/xiao, because i kinda ship lumine with childe >,< my feelings for childe/zhongli are similar to xiaoven, maybe just to a lesser extent but that's a rant for another day.

I've seen peeps angry about how Dia's episode this season and Yoshiko's last season seem to mean nothing since they're still calling them "Dia-san" and "Yoshiko" respectively. What do you think? bc I personally feel that the point of the episodes had less to do with how they were addressed and more w/ a feeling of belonging in the group

I agree! I think that the issue with these character-centered episodes has to do with the fact that the audience is misunderstanding the point of them.

This might be easier to understand if I first explain how they’re structured. IMO, the LLS character-centered episodes usually follow a certain formula that goes something like this:

The central character has a certain flaw or worry that makes them go through a period of self-doubt. (Examples: Yoshiko wants to live a normal high school life. Dia notices that she’s the only third year in Aqours who isn’t referred to by a familiar suffix.)

The central character believes that they have to act a certain way to resolve this issue. (Examples: Yoshiko thinks that she has to abandon her “fallen angel” routine to be accepted by her peers. Dia thinks that being called “Dia-chan” will make her closer to the rest of the group.)

With the help of Chika - or in the case of Chika herself, the others in Aqours - the central character realizes that there is another solution they didn’t consider because they had misunderstood the root of the problem. (Examples: Yoshiko realizes that she should find friends who accept her as she is rather than trying to change herself. Dia discovers that her title is given to her out of respect rather than distance.)

The problem is resolved and the central character regains their confidence. Hooray, friendship saves the day! (ﾉ◕ヮ◕)ﾉ*:・ﾟ✧

See that bold section in #3? That’s the part that a lot of people miss - ironically, this means that these people are making the exact same mistake that the main character of the episode is making.

The point of S1E5 wasn’t that Yoshiko wanted friends who would call her “Yohane”, but that Yoshiko wanted friends who would put up with her demands to be called “Yohane”. This is even apparent at the final confrontation of the episode:

Yoshiko: I’ll spew a lot of weird stuff.

You: That’s fine.

Yoshiko: I might start performing ceremonies and stuff sometimes.

Riko: We’ll deal with it.

Yoshiko: I might tell you to be my little demons!

Chika: Well, um… We’ll say no if we don’t want to!

Let me repeat that last part because it’s hella important: “We’ll say no if we don’t want to!”

What Yoshiko needed wasn’t a group of girls who would hang out with her only because she got rid of her fallen angel routine, or little demon lackeys who would obey every edict she issued. What she needed was friends who would be realistic about her antics, but would stick with her until the end. Friendship isn’t about agreeing perfectly with each other - you’ll have different tastes, and will sometimes fight over those differences. True friendship is being able to accept each other despite these differences.

You might have noticed that it’s not Mari and Ruby, the pair that tends to play along with the “Yohane” thing the most, who are seen as Yoshiko’s closest friends in the anime. The pair that is the most associated with Yoshiko is, in fact, the duo that complains the most about Yoshiko’s behavior - Riko and Hanamaru. They tease and scold her about her quirks precisely because they’re so close to her. It’s because these two are so attentive to Yoshiko’s well-being that they moderate her weirdness. Thanks to their friendship, Yoshiko knows that despite their occasional harsh words, they mean the best for her.

So with this in mind, is it really all that crucial to refer to Yoshiko as “Yohane”? While it would be nice of Aqours to do so, I think that would be missing the point. Accepting “Yohane” doesn’t mean accepting that as Yoshiko’s name. Rather, it’s accepting the concept of Yohane, that Yoshiko happens to be a high school girl who occasionally says some off-the-wall occult things that she can’t help because she loves the fallen angel thing and oh god she knows it’s weird but at this point it’s so ingrained in her identity that there’s nothing she can do about it please all she wants is to stop feeling so lonely -

…you get the point. The important thing isn’t calling Yoshiko by her preferred name “Yohane”, but that the existence of “Yohane” is accepted rather than shunned. Yoshiko had been so caught up in thinking that the “Yohane” persona was a black-or-white “if it pops up I’ll lose my friends / if I hide it I can have a normal life” situation that she never stopped to consider a balance between the two: friends who didn’t necessarily have to indulge her fallen angel antics, but would always support her in times of need.

Fittingly for a series called “Love Live!”, an important theme of the work is about love - that is, self-love, and giving your all at something you love to do. The charm of school idols, Chika insists to Yoshiko, isn’t that they change themselves into whatever they think is popular or that the audience likes best. Rather, it’s the fact that they have a part of themselves that they love, and are happy to share that with everyone.

Consider this - do Yoshiko fans like Yoshiko despite her fallen angel shtick, or do they like her because she throws herself so wholeheartedly into it? I’m sure you can guess the answer by now. We admire people who are passionate about what they love. Chika’s words make Yoshiko realize that “Yohane” isn’t something to be ashamed of - rather, it’s something that she should embrace.

Again, this is a crucial lesson echoed throughout the “Love Live!” series: embrace the time you have now, and put everything you have into something you love. That’s when you truly shine, because there’s nothing more beautiful than someone who’s doing their best and enjoying it.

With Dia, we have a similar theme of friendship being tied to a certain name. However, the circumstances are quite different.

Now, I can understand why people were a bit upset about Dia’s episode turning out the way that it did. After all, Dia spent nearly the whole time making a fool of herself just to hear Chika tell her, “We like you just the way you are, Dia-san!” µ’s even had an entire episode dedicated to having the members address each other with “-chan” to break down the seniority barriers.

But let me point out something important: Dia refers to Kanan and Mari, her childhood friends, as “Kanan-san” and “Mari-san”. Do you think that this means Dia isn’t close to Kanan and Mari?

Recall the scene where Kanan and Mari spill the beans about Dia to the rest of Aqours. They talk about how they’ve always seen Dia as somewhat “above them” because of how talented and formal she is. With everyone expecting Dia to act the part of the refined lady, Dia slowly took on that role until it became an actual part of her identity. If Dia was just a normal high school gal, she’d probably refer to Kanan and Mari as just that - Kanan and Mari, no suffixes needed. But because Dia’s been raised to be well-mannered, she automatically refers to them as “Kanan-san” and “Mari-san” despite her close relationship with them.

This shows that Dia’s way of referring to people is simply a matter of her upbringing as a Kurosawa heiress rather than her trying to distance herself from others. If you need more proof, just listen to how Ruby refers to other people in the early episodes of the anime and in the audio dramas - apart from her sister and her childhood friend Hanamaru, Ruby refers to nearly everyone with “-san”. Ruby has the same habit, but is a lot more lenient about casting it aside as she probably doesn’t feel as pressured as Dia is to stay prim and proper. That’s why the spotlight is solely on Dia for being out-of-place about how she refers to and is referred to by others.

Here’s the mini-takeaway from this episode - what’s important is not the words itself, but the meaning behind them. I’m gonna illustrate this with two different takes of a scenario. Imagine that Aqours is chilling in a dressing room, waiting to be called for their performance in a school idol competition.

Take 1:

Mari bursts into the room holding a venti Starbucks latte in one hand and a set of very expensive-looking car keys in the other.

“What’s up, bitches?” Mari sings.

Chika and You cheekily salute and parrot back the greeting. Everyone else ignores her (except Dia, who looks like she would be strangling Mari if she wasn’t occupied with covering Ruby’s ears).

Kanan sighs. “We love you Mari, but get your ass in here. You’re late.”

Take 2:

A rival school idol group that has been sending condescending looks towards Aqours all day bursts into the room.

“What’s up, bitches?” Girl A sneers.

Since Dia is too busy covering Ruby’s ears, Kanan is the first to rise up in anger. However, she’s interrupted by the sight of Mari popping open the lid of her latte and splashing its still-hot contents at the intruders.

“Don’t you dare speak that way towards my friends,” Mari hisses.

…this illustration was probably a lot more vulgar than it needed to be, but hopefully you get my point. It doesn’t matter that Dia is referred to as “Dia-san” - what’s crucial is the intent behind it. Chika brings back the lesson from Yoshiko’s episode here: you shouldn’t try to change yourself just to make friends. Aqours doesn’t hate her strictness, so there’s no need for Dia to try to do away with it. Dia is referred to as “Dia-san” because everyone respects how much work she puts into making sure Aqours isn’t a complete mess, and thus they refer to her with an appropriately respectful title. In a way, it’s actually a very affectionate title that shows Dia’s unique position in Aqours - you could even think of it as the equivalent of “Mom”.

If you’re still thinking, “Oh come on, how hard is it to just call her ‘Dia-chan’?!”, let me illustrate with something that’s actually happened to me. At Thanksgiving this year, I met a family member who’s around my mother’s age. She’s a distant relative of mine, but because we live in the same area, we’re pretty close. I was helping her with the dishes when we had the following conversation:

Relative: Hey Yujacha, there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you.

Me: What is it?

Relative: You know how you call me “Aunty”? I want you to call me “Grandma” instead.

Me: …I’m sorry, what?

Relative: I want you to call me “Grandma”. I’m serious. I really, really, really want you to call me “Grandma”.

Me: I, uh…

Relative: Call me “Grandma”!

To give you some context: my family tree is kind of messed up (I think it had to do with some kind of early/late marriage), so somewhere along the line the branch with my relatives became a generation above mine, despite us being the same age. This means that the relative above is technically a grandmother to me despite being around my mother’s age, and her children (who I usually refer to as my cousins) are technically my aunt and uncle - even though they’re younger than me.

I could’ve said yes. It was a request from an elder, and she genuinely wanted me to use the title. Plus, what harm was there in simply saying a different name?

Instead, I replied, “…I’m sorry Aunty, I can’t. It sounds weird to me. ( ; w ; )”

I was so used to saying “Aunty” that I couldn’t break the habit. It was also a matter of respect - even though the relative herself wanted to be called “Grandma”, in my mind, I would be lowkey insulting her by implying that she looks a lot older than she actually is.

I could be completely off the mark here, but personally speaking, I think that this might be part of the reason why Dia is always referred to as “Dia-san” by most of Aqours. As stated above, Dia is revered as the Kurosawa heiress and the brilliant student council president of Uranohoshi. Even though Dia herself wants to be called “Dia-chan”, to the rest of Aqours, it would feel like an insult if they didn’t refer to her respectfully. At that point, they’re just so used to calling her “Dia-san” that it would feel weird to say anything else. Communication is a two-way street. Don’t forget that a title shows a relationship between the receiver and the giver of the title.

I know that some people are still going to be upset about the “Dia-chan” thing, which is fine - Dia deserves the love! But the point of the episode, despite what it seemed, wasn’t just to get Aqours to call Dia something different. Rather, it was Dia’s clumsy way of opening herself up to the others and admitting that she wants to be their close friend. While the lesson might not have been so clear due to all the slapstick shenanigans going on, I think that we did see Dia succeeding on that end. No matter what she’s called, from now on, Dia knows that she’s appreciated by Aqours and is considered a close friend.

tl;dr: Chuunibyou high schooler and stern StuCo prez awkwardly try to make friends, and learn that friendship extends beyond appearances and titles. What needs to change isn’t their behavior - it’s the way they think about their behavior. By casting aside their self-doubt, they can begin to love themselves as they are, and renew their confidence as the school idols of Aqours.

While we’re on the subject - I’m sure that with this talk of controversial character episodes, you might be wondering why I’m not bringing up the two most controversial episodes, i.e. S1E9 (the KanaMari episode) and S1E11 (the You/ChikaYou episode).

I think a lot of meta writers who are a heck of a lot more talented than I am have already covered Episode 9, so I don’t really feel the need to bring it up. At this point, there have been enough rallying cries from the “Kanan Protection Squad” that most people should be a bit more forgiving of Kanan’s actions. As irrational as they were, you have to also consider that Kanan was just a fifteen-year-old girl under a lot of stress and self-inflicted guilt. There’s also the factor of miscommunication, and…well, again, this has already been analyzed, so I won’t dive into this one.

As for Episode 11, I actually received an ask about it, so I’ll be sitting down and thinking about how to answer that one! I’ve already got a couple of ideas in mind…
