"Did Light love his family?" Anon - Catch-All Answer
Since these are six asks that are all about in the same vein, I am gonna just put the responses into one post for organization's sake.
Tumblr media
Light begs his father to kill Mello because he wants his father's death to have been good for something. Nothing pains him more than the idea of having let this happen without it even accomplishing his goal.
Light is the physical manifestation of the lost cost fallacy: he needs to keep going because he sacrificed too much to stop and allow those sacrifices to be rendered meaningless.
And Light rationalizes. It's one of his most prominent character traits: instead of acknowledging his own emotions, he tries to filter his thoughts into nothing but emotionless pragmatism.
This is consistently portrayed through the 'hidden eyes' visual key - Light is excellent at lying to himself, in his own thoughts, which is why Obata gave us this clever way of seeing when this is happening even as Light's own internal monologue doesn't reflect it.
I have an incomplete list of these instances here, especially as pertaining to his family.
Ultimately, if we disagree that Light rationalizes his feelings rather than allowing himself to fully feel them, then none of my arguments are ever going to make sense to you and vice versa.
As a short addendum, here's Ohba's own words on this chapter (HTR13 p.80): "Even if there was acting involved in Light's tearful performance, I don't believe the tears are 100% an act." (も し月の涙に演技入っていたとしても、100%演技の涙では到底ないと思います。)
Tumblr media
Soichiro already made the eye deal, which is an absolutely horrifying sacrifice to have made. Light wanted it to be as useful as it could possibly be, in order to justify the magnitude of the price.
Tumblr media
I hate to say it, but you're really gonna have to take this one up with Ohba himself. On Page 65 of HTR13, he literally says that he picked Sayu as a kidnapping victim because Light loves his family and wouldn't kill her. (Unlike Misa, whom he would have just killed in this scenario rather than letting the plot progress.)
The panel you are thinking of is this one, where he is panicking, but you're not putting it into perspective.
Tumblr media
In a previous chapter (62) Ide was about to inform the whole police force that Sayu Yagami was kidnapped. Soichiro was about to agree to this.
If Light had let this happen, he could have killed Sayu without narrowing down the suspect pool at all. They already know that Kira has ties to the police. He would have removed the leverage the mafia had held against them and gotten off entirely scott-free.
He does decidedly NOT do that. It's LIGHT personally who stops Ide from giving him the perfect alibi. EVEN RYUK CALLS OUT HOW ODD THAT WAS AS A MOVE.
Tumblr media
And sure, Light says 'oh yeah, now nobody will suspect us!!' but nobody was really suspecting them to begin with.
This is what I mean - Light never allows himself to just feel things, he always rationalizes himself to justify his actions to himself.
Tumblr media
His father dying. Dude.
Tumblr media
.... literally why would he? Like, even if they don't accept Kira they also pose absolutely no threat to Kira.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've covered all of this above, but I am including the ask to say that yes, I've seen it. The core issue here is that we disagree on Light's relationship to himself - you take his internal monologue at face value, while I think there is ample evidence that Light manipulates himself most of all. (As made completely manifest in the Yotsuba-Arc where he literally mindwipes himself into an incredibly emotionally and physically painful experience just to use himself as a pawn.)

AU where L and Light go to To-Oh together before the Death Note is dropped. (Whether Light is Kira is up to you, I think it'd be cool either way)
While L and the cops are investigating Kira, Light and L have began a relationship. Now, Soichiro (lights dad, if your memory is as bad as mine) is working with L, but has also literally seen him in the house.
Sufficed to say, he's shocked when he meets L and it's his son's college friend. Even more so when Light calls L nearing the end of a meeting and hears them talk more than platonically.
Here's some little excerpts my mind made up. I've watched the show only once, so I'm sorry if/that it's ooc
"Hello. I am here to see Light."
"Light! There's a weird guy at the door!" Sayu called. She glanced at him. "No offense."
"None taken," L dismissed.
Light ran down the stairs, smiling at the sight of L in the door.
"Hey! I picked up some cake, and we can go play that game I talked about."
"I figured as much, since that's why I'm here," L said. Light rolled his eyes fondly.
They walked into the kitchen, where his father was getting water.
"Oh, you must be Soichiro Yagami. Police chief, solved over 30 cases."
"Wow, Light. I had no idea you talked about me all that much."
"He doesn't."
Upon setting their sights on L, Soichiro's mind went blank. He would've never guessed. What were the chances. While everyone else was making their judgments on L and his appearance, Soichiro was trying to combine Ryuzaki with L in his mind.
He ignored it. It'd be safer for both of them if they didn't bring their personal lives into this. He took out his ID and introduced himself as if it were the first time.
"If I were Kira you would be dead Soichiro Yagami."
Combining these two people wouldn't be so difficult. He knew Ryuzaki reminded him of someone.
As they went on, he remembered small details. Light running downstairs because he and Ryuzaki had left their phones there. Ryuzaki also had an infatuation for sugar, and even when his wife made pretty universally loved tea, he'd still add stacks of sugar cubes.
Then there was...
"And from now on, I'll have to ask that you stop calling me 'L.' It's..." L glanced at Soichiro. "Ryuzaki now. Just to be safe."
How cautious was L to give a fake name to L before Kira was even a factor? And if Soichiro didn't know him, would he have used a different alias?
"Excuse me," L said, pulling his phone oddly from his pocket. "Your timing is perfect, I'm nearly done with my meeting. I'll be over shortly."
"I assume you have more puzzles to test me with?"
"Of course I do." Whoever was on the other side laughed softly. A small smile cracked L's face.
"I look forward to it, Ryu."
"So do I."
"See you soon."
L hesitated, but hung up without saying much more like usual.
"My apologies, I try not to keep him waiting."
"Was that Watari?" Matsuda asked.
"No, my boyfriend." He said it so casually, though it shocked everyone.
"You... what?" Aizawa asked.
"He's the only person I've ever met on my level. If it didn't put him in significant danger, I would've brought him in to help." He pushed his lip with his thumb. "Though that's not the only reason," he added in a mumble. He looked as ashamed as L could look.
"How long have you, uh..." Poor Matsuda was thrown extremely off guard.
"I've been queer my whole life if that's what you're asking. Though, I'm sure you're not. I've known him for a few months. He's very attractive." He pulled his hand away from his smile. "I'd tell you his name, but I don't feel comfortable doing so."
Soichiro feared he already knew who it was. Light didn't need to be put in more danger than he already was being his son. He didn't know how to feel about this.
"You'd place surveillance camera's on your own boyfriend?" Soichiro asked. He wouldn't mind placing them on Light, but L always had a certain level of respect for him.
"Of course. I've suspected he was L since before we started a romantic relationship."
This was a shock to everyone. Not only L dating Light, but L potentially dating Kira and knowing it.
"Why?"
"Light is my intellectual equal. Unfortunately that makes it more likely that he's Kira. And the fact that he made the first move only increases that likelihood, though he doesn't know I'm L. If he did, I'd be more sure."
"How sure are you?"
"About 5%. If he knew I was L before he kissed me, it'd be 7 or 8%. Getting close with the enemy is a good way of staying in their good graces and not getting caught, but I'm not going to excuse Light as a suspect just because he makes me happy. That would be ridiculous. And being his boyfriend makes it so I can monitor him outside the house without raising suspicion."
"I might be out of line, but that sounds messed up. Spying on your boyfriend?"
"Well, I don't have to. I can monitor elsewhere while they're at home. I will still be attending my outings with Light and I can't help but monitor him in those moments, though I can assure you we're usually focused on each other; I'm not sure he'd have a moment to kill with me there."
"And Light doesn't know you're L?" Aizawa asked. "Couldn't it be helpful for him to be brought on the case? He's helped on cases before."
"If Light isn't Kira, I don't want him in any danger. I'm sure Soichiro understands my dilemma." His voice was tense as were his hands.
"I do," Soichiro admitted. "I'm find putting cameras around the house. If there's any chance, we may as well check."
"Exactly."

Hate hate HATE what the anime did to the way Sayu's kidnapping was handled (specifically by Light). The anime just wants to show how utterly devoid of love anime!Light (coz no manga!Light would never seriously consider killing Sayu oh my god) is even towards his family at the face of his Kira goals.
Contrary to the manga (which i prefer who would've guessed) in which Light is shown very genuinely caring for his family! And you know just who wanted to save Sayu more? Or who was more active in saving her between Light & Soichiro?
It was Light (at least manga!Light coz idk what the hell was going on in anime!Light's mind during that episode). Yeah, I know. It might be surprising to those who haven't read the manga but this protective brother of Sayu's? Cares for her deeply.
And the anime just had to fuck that up, hadn't it? 🤦🏻‍♀️
I hate episode 28 (titled 'Impatience') of the anime with a burning passion. So much so that I'll compare it with how the plot ACTUALLY transpires in the Manga.
This post is...long: I've tried my hardest to not go overboard with my negative(?) rant against the anime but it was an impossible task imo /o\
If any of the points mentioned in this post are good, they are due to tumblr user casuistor's post which I read on a regular basis. (Go check it out!! It's much much better than anything I could've written in my whole life. Yes, I'm a fan :)
If there are any mistakes, it would be entirely correct to attribute them to me.
I admit I hadn't paid much attention to the manga the first time I had read it but holy shit even then I had picked up on how close the Yagami siblings were!
I couldn't make much sense of the plot of the 2nd arc (I wasn't completely over L's death so forgive me for being in a daze) and yet I was absolutely sure of the fact that Light had done everything in his power to save Sayu. Even if you were not following the plot closely, you'd still understand that fact (which the anime did much worse than deliberately ignoring it). Why?
Because Ryuk kindly summarizes the plot/points this out:
Tumblr media
Honestly, I don't even need to go on at this point now, do I? Ryuk, who never fails to call out Light (for example, saying that Light will be the only bad guy left if he kills every 'bad' guy out there in chapter 1), has just confirmed what thoughtful manga readers already knew: Light has a soft spot for his sister.
I'm still petty at the anime so I won't stop at this point. I'll first explain how it goes in the manga, then how the anime butchered it. Let's gooo!
To understand the circumstances surrounding Sayu's kidnapping, we need to note that the NPA director Takimura is kidnapped by Mello first for the exchange of the notebook. Soichiro notifies every bureau of the NPA. And Light, of course, doesn't hesitate for a minute to kill Takimura (obviously, the priority of Death Note >>> the life of Takimura, to Light).
This is supposed to happen behind the scenes in the manga compared to the anime which makes Light killing Takimura much more obvious:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-episode 27: Abduction
Anyways, it's part of Light's plan to let the kidnappers take the fall for Takimura's death (so that Kira won't be blamed for his murder. And since only the kidnappers and the NPA know about the kidnapping: it won't be assumed that Kira has any link to the NPA).
Tumblr media
Light seriously doubts that the kidnappers would just drop the issue due to Takimura's death and he's right. Sayu is kidnapped.
Tumblr media
Mello is taking full responsibility for Takimura's death just like Light intended him to. However, this time, rather than any person whom Light could've easily disposed of (like Takimura) to avoid letting the notebook fall into the kidnappers' hands, Sayu- the sister for whom Light cares deeply- is kidnapped instead.
Not only that, Mello expects Soichiro to keep this a secret from the rest of the NPA personnel otherwise as he threatens, he'll kill Sayu. Now, we know that during Takimura's kidnapping, rest of the NPA were notified of the fact (Yes, the circumstances are quite different- there wasn't a threat to Takimura's life for letting the others know of his kidnapping), Ide points this out:
Tumblr media
Ide is apparently okay with Sayu's death and appeals to (read: pressures) 'duty/justice above my family' side of Soichiro Yagami to send word to every NPA department even if that means Sayu will be killed. And you know what? Soichiro actually agrees to do so!
Tumblr media
I would like you to see Light's reaction here, these panels come directly after the above one:
Tumblr media
Light wastes no time to completely change his plan to have everyone assume that it was the kidnappers who killed Takimura to -> Kira did it. This was Light's previous plan before Sayu got involved:
"It's part of Light's plan to let the kidnappers take the fall for Takimura's death (so that Kira won't be blamed for his murder. And since only the kidnappers and the NPA know about the kidnapping: it won't be assumed that Kira has any link to the NPA)."
This changing of plans that Light does immediately is actively detrimental to Light's Kira's cause (in other words, disadvantageous to Kira's goals). Look at Light digging a hole for himself just to save his sister:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Light argues to not notify the other NPA departments otherwise Kira would know about the kidnapping and kill Sayu (and they wouldn't get a chance to investigate the kidnappers if Kira kills Sayu before they can negotiate with them). So their best bet is to keep quiet about it so that Kira doesn't know; meanwhile they can, as Ide says, try and catch the culprit while negotiating the exchange.
Tumblr media
Back to how this is in no way an advantage to Light (as Kira):
Telling the task force that Kira was behind Takimura's murder whose kidnapping was known only to the NPA personnel suggests that Kira has a link to NPA info and may lead to doubt against those in NPA being Kira (the NPA that Light is now the part of) so obviously not a win for Kira/Light.
Light is in now a very bad position if he needs to kill Sayu in the future to avoid the Note falling to the kidnappers' hands. Because now he can't blame Kira for her death, can he? He is the one who stopped them from sending word to rest of the NPA so Kira has (according to Light) theoretically no way of knowing about the exchange with Sayu situation (unless if Kira were in the task force itself thus narrowing down the list of Kira suspects); ergo Kira won't kill her.
So why the hell is Light okay with these disadvantages instead of his previous, practically/pragmatically (for Kira's cause) better plan? Better yet, why not did he kill Sayu himself without a moment of hesitation like he did with Takimura when he had the chance to do so before suggesting that it was Kira who killed Takimura, the kidnappers could've been framed for Sayu's death? Or just allow notifying the NPA personnel so that they made a move and let the kidnappers do the dirty work?
Because, as Ryuk says, Light has a soft spot for his sister:
Tumblr media
Note that: Light doesn't even try to deny it in his thoughts ("...that's not all" anyone?). We're talking about the guy who rationalizes his way out of his feelings, who views emotions as the reason 'why most idiots screw up' and he does NOT DENY THAT HE CARES FOR HIS SISTER.
Also worthy of note is how quickly he decides to tell the task force that Kira killed Takimura. Usually, we get a long wall of text of Light planning his every move. Not in this case. I believe it's because this decision was fueled by emotion rather than reason- the emotion being brotherly love ofc.
["A totally emotional decision is typically very fast. This is because it takes time (at least 0.1 seconds) for the rational cortex to get going. This is the reactive (and largely subconscious) decision-making that you encounter in heated arguments or when faced with immediate danger.
Common emotional decisions may use some logic, but the main driving force is emotion, which either overrides logic or uses a pseudo-logic to support emotional choices (this is extremely common)." (as a bonus have this research by Damasio)]
Once, Light has time to think, he goes 'well even if in the worst case scenario (the kidnappers get the note) I have Misa's eyes so I'm still at an advantage eh...?'
Tumblr media
He is, instead of contemplating a way to kill Sayu so that the note is safe, thinking (however briefly) of how it won't be muuuuuuuch of a problem if Mello does gets his hands on the note. Idk about you guys but man that rlly gives us an idea of Light's priorities (Sayu>>>>>>Death Note).
Here's instance #2 demonstrating Light's priorities (when Soichiro asks Light to just save Sayu as the former doesn't care if he loses his life. And Light responds by saying don't be a fool etc etc):
Tumblr media
#Sayu matters more than the Death Note
Now we come to the scene which the anime seems to have taken to heart to entirely without the context. When Soichiro goes underground for the exchange, we have Near taunting Light (as L number 2)
Tumblr media
This is not Light seriously deciding to kill Sayu (remember when he had the time to think over his decision, killing Sayu was not even an option but handing over the note to Mello was, in the worst case (even if he has Misa's eyes, it doesn't mean the idea is any less ridiculous)).
This is him, so stressed that he's coming up with so rubbish ideas that even he goes 'wtf am i thinking??' Because at this point, killing Sayu would be announcing that Kira is among the task force as only they know of Sayu's kidnapping + her name & face, which is again bad for Kira's cause. And the one responsible for this predicament is Light himself as he was the one who told the task force not to alert the NPA personnel.
If Light really had been meaning to kill Sayu, he had plenty of time & opportunity to do so (without the suspicion falling on him) before suggesting that Kira killed Takimura. Light essentially ran in the opposite direction when he was faced with the perfect chance of killing Sayu (just let the others notify the departments of NPA -> kill Sayu -> Blame Kira for it, foolproof. but he did Not take this route as he Loves his sister) and now when it is absolutely NOT AN OPTION (for obvious reasons) he's thinking it since he's stressed to the point of irrationality.
Yes, he's seen thinking this:
Tumblr media
...aaaand he can't bring himself to finish the thought because he knows that he did the opposite since he loves Sayu & Soichiro dearly and couldn't bring himself to kill them.
Also look how concerned Light is over the well-being of Sayu & Soichiro that he calls his dad to ask if they're okay:
Tumblr media
I hope at this point you believe me when I say that manga!Light never seriously considers killing Sayu. He loves his sister too much for that.
______________________________________________________________
Now we move on to how the anime (fucked it all up) adapted this. I'm not particularly happy with it (understatement of the year) so I'm gonna rant about how inferior it is compared to the manga. Let's gooo!
The plot goes pretty similarly: Takimura is kidnapped ->Light kills him -> Sayu is kidnapped -> Mello demands them not to notify the NPA personnel lest they kill Sayu.
But the change in episode 27 is that they remove the discussion (mainly Ide pressuring Soichiro) around whether to notify the NPA personnel. Soichiro deciding to send word to all departments of NPA is cut so we don't get to see Light swooping in to protect Sayu.
Still, anime!Light does reveal that it was Kira who killed Takimura. And advises the task force to keep Sayu's kidnapping a secret. However, anime!Ryuk doesn't call anime!Light out on him having a soft spot for his sister (coz as far as the anime is concerned, they really REALLY wanna sell the idea that Light doesn't care for Sayu).
It's a lot harder, therefore, to make sense of anime!Light's motivations in changing his plan from having the kidnappers framed for Takimura's murder to admitting that Kira did it. It appears that it happens just because ???
Like there is no reason in manga!Light doing this apart from saving his sister but anime!Light cannot have any redeeming qualities like loving his family, he needs to be a 100% evil villain!! ...So we have zero explanation for anime!Light's actions.
The exchange between Light & Soichiro re: the whole 'I don't care if I die but please save Sayu' + 'You can't die in front of Sayu no matter what...You must make the right decisions so that both you and Sayu live.' occurs without change. But due to the succeeding added anime-only scenes (which I'll talk about later), this conversation sounds fake from Light's side while it is completely genuine in the manga.
Then the infamous scene (which I hate to death) of anime!Light SERIOUSLY considering to kill Sayu comes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Misa overhears him saying that in the bathroom coz why not?? make it worse??? :) :) :)
Tumblr media
And anime!Light comes as close as to killing Sayu that he even has his watch opened with the piece of the notebook
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...wow such an awful brother being a piece of shit >:(
Tumblr media
Wait! Can brotherly affection save the day? Has anime!Light finally realized the error of his ways?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nope. Anime!Light chooses not to kill Sayu not because he loves her but because it would be self-incriminating to do so. Yeah...what. an. asshole.
Light calling his dad to check up on how him & Sayu are doing is cut from the anime. Instead, take a look at how displeased anime!Light is after Sayu is rescued by sacrificing the notebook.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Damn.
...yeah, this is Not the face of someone who's happy with the way things happened (namely losing the Death Note to Mello in exchange for Sayu's life). It's clear where anime!Light's priorities actually lie (Death Note>>>>Family) He's so angry that he takes out his anger on Misa by slapping the drink she offers, out of her hands:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh and these scenes are nowhere in the manga, they're just in the anime to emphasize just how big of a jerk brother anime!Light is.
In conclusion! Manga!Light (who's the only Light that matters really imo) loves his sister, would never seriously consider killing her in contrast to anime!Light who is very ready to say 'Sayonara Sayu Yagami' via murder and would've done so if it wasn't self-incriminating.
As you can see manga!Light is far superior to anime!Light. If you've stuck around to read this post to the end (a) I love you & (b) I hope you have a fantabulous day!! <333

Would Death note change if Light had an identical twin? In one hand, Light would not share anything as he didn't with his family. But if the twin was closer to a clone (as with the Bella twins discussed in this blog), it would make things significantly harder for Light. I don't know if they would be able to make a long alliance, given their pride, but what do you think?
The horrible post anon's referencing.
Interesting. Not much would change but we'd get even more family drama.
The Thing About Light and Kira
Light didn't decide to become Kira until after he'd accidentally killed using the Death Note. At which point, he decided a) because he was a murderer b) because that murder in his eyes was justified and the world was a 'better' place he had to go all in. Before that point, he was bored yes, but it took him about a day to decide to kill every heinous criminal he possibly could (at which point Ryuk became very impressed and interested).
So even an alien experiment Light Yagami clone from birth who is identical in every way would not be Kira just because the other Light is Kira. From what we see in the Yotsuba Arc, Light without having take the step to kill himself and decide to become Kira, from an outsider's perspective, thinks Kira is fucking insane and heinous and absolutely should be stopped.
Which is where twinny mc twin comes in.
The Other Thing About Having Two Light Yagamis
Light in canon is the first born son. There's Sayu, yes, but she's several years younger than him and it's established early on that Light is extremely brilliant and that Sayu while sweet is normal. Light adores his little sister and were it not for Kira they'd have maintained a great relationship (as it is, Light distances himself from his family and something truly awful happens to Sayu, but he never stops caring about her).
However, Light now has a twin and they are equal on every level. Light is highly competitive and a perfectionist and so I imagine while he loves his twin (as he's extremely family oriented as a character) there's also a lot of tension and a complicated relationship as both feel they have to be the best and out do the other.
We're not talking about people who are each other's best friend, confidante, or even get along all that well beyond the nebulous idea of being closely related.
Even if Light were so inclined, this isn't someone he'd want to confide in and someone he'd be extremely wary of.
What Does Twin Know?
As you note, Light takes great pains to keep his family in the dark. His father dies believing Light isn't Kira as Light had gone to great lengths so he was not technically owner of the notebook when his father viewed him with the eyes.
Sayu and Sachiko who had no direct involvement in the case were kept very in the dark about the case details and investigation.
Remember also the reason Light was able to track the investigation so closely was that he hacked his father's computer and was looking at files directly from the NPA homicide division. Soichiro was extremely tight lipped about details and never revealed to what extent he (and later Light) were involved in the Kira case. The family could figure out the answer was "heavily" but it was nothing outright said and god knows what Sayu and Sachiko were told about that time Light disappeared for several months with no contact, no appearances at his university, and was not able to call home.
I doubt it was "a detective has handcuffed him to himself and is unrelentingly convinced he's a serial killer".
And note that later Light has as much information as he has because he 'joins' the task force. By that point, the general NPA had been cut out and Light no longer had useful police files on the investigation.
Point being, twin has very limited information.
Light Becomes Kira, Twin Does Not
So, we start off in canon. Twin notices Light behaving strangely for a few days but doesn't think much of it. Light's always been fairly solitary and being locked up in his room after school isn't... too weird.
It's not immediately obvious what's happening, either, as people at first did not put together the connection of Kira and then didn't want to put together the connection of Kira. It wasn't until Lind L. Taylor that Kira went from internet urban legend and weird coincidence to either a) a god like being having it out for the wicked or b) a human criminal psychic who has a very terrifying talent.
I imagine twin is dubious at the initial rumors pre the broadcast, while also being somewhat :/ about the coincidences. Twin doesn't know how bad it is, as twin only sees the news at this point which I imagine is censoring just how many are dying of heart attacks of all things, but it's still enough to be weird.
Then Lind L. Taylor happens and "what the fuck" is twin's initial response. Twin doesn't suspect Light, because that's insane and Light's not a psychic or vengeful god, but is instead just reeling from the fact that Kira exists and is doing this.
Twin is absolutely in support of their father being directly involved in the case and itching to be on the case themselves and dying that they're too young. I imagine they talk to Light about it (where Light has to act his little heart out) and both agree that they have to get into the homicide division as soon as possible to help catch this motherfucker.
"Oh well, hopefully L will manage it before that point," twin muses, as realistically that'll be another several years.
"YEAH, HOPEFULLY," Light says.
Twin won't internally notice anything's amiss for some time (as after the initial mental breakdown Light did a fantastic job pretending that everything was fine/not changing his behavior patterns) but then the FBI agents show up. Now, Light noticed he was followed in part because of a) Ryuk b) he was expecting this sort of thing. Twin may not notice, but if they do, I imagine they start wigging out because why are what are clearly government/police following them around. If they notice, twin probably confronts Light (not wanting to worry Sayu and Sachiko, and not wanting to push things with Soichiro) and Light will either have to a) gaslight b) agree "yeah it totally looks like we're both being followed, what's up with that?" Regardless, twin will notice when Light takes a girl??? to Space Land??? out of nowhere and think it's all very odd because Light doesn't do dates or girlfriends.
Where things could go... potentially sideways as since Light and Twin are the same person on paper--does L know which one's Kira? He never really has a concrete reason to suspect Light specifically. He narrows it down to Japan, a police family, then to the family of those followed by Raye Penber, and settles on Light as his primary suspect but--here's another young teenager, an idealist, who is as brilliant as Light.
L may use his voodoo powers to magically think Light is the correct one but--he may also not be sure which it is or if it's both. In which case Twin is in for a terrible terrible time in the future.
But before this post gets too long, I think I'll say I can see how Light would not be found out by Twin and Twin would either die ignorant or else be horrified and have to be murdered by Light when twin discovers what Light really is.
But I think it'd take some time to figure out or that they never would both because they have limited information, because suspecting Light would be insane, and because Light is their brother and that's a horrible truth to confront/admit.

Waiting for the Ball to Drop
Day 14 of 31 of Kinktober
Prompt: Cock warming
Word Count: 2131
It's New Year's Eve at the Yagami household. And L wants Light to wear a special Christmas present for the occasion.
A year and a half had passed since the Kira case went cold.  Sure, the task force never caught Kira, but the killings stopped.  The world changed only slightly for the better.  Everything was fine.  But something came out of that investigation.  Something wonderful.  They were both too stubborn to admit it at the time, but once the investigation ended, they couldn’t fight it anymore.  L and Light were disgustingly in love with each other.
So, once the investigation was over, they were free men.  Both able to pursue whatever and whoever they wanted.  It’s not like they knew they’d only be pursuing each other.  As much as L wanted to go back to London, he couldn’t leave Light.  And living in Tokyo wasn’t half bad.  The two decided to get a luxury apartment together (because L refused to live in squalor) with Watari only a few doors down if need be.  And that was the beginning of their happily ever after.
A few months after coming clean with everyone about their relationship, how they weren’t just roommates for the sake of saving money or space, Watari couldn’t have been happier.  There was someone else in L’s life to make him happy.  That was good enough for him.  However, it took a while for Soichiro to come around to Watari’s way of thinking.  In all honesty, he was just happy Light wasn’t sticking with Misa.  Having her around for family functions would’ve been excruciating.
That brought them to New Year’s.  After coming back from London for Christmas, it gave L and Light a few days to prepare for New Year’s Eve.  There was no way they’d be able to get out of going to the Yagami household for New Year’s.  It was too important to Sachiko that both her children were home.  And with the way things were going these days, she wanted L around, too.  Even though he wasn’t much for conversation, she wasn’t going to shun him either.
It was an hour before they had to be at Light’s parents’ house.  Light had just gotten out of the shower and L was stretched across their bed.  And he couldn’t help but watch as Light walked toward the closet in nothing but a towel, “Light…”
“Hmm?” Light started skimming through the rack of clothes he had hanging up.
“I have an idea,” L scanned Light up and down, fully appreciating the view, “Would you humor me?”
“Depends on the idea,” Light wasn’t sure where L was going with this, but it had him intrigued.
“You know that pretty little plug I got you for Christmas?” L asked.
“The one with the diamond in the end?”
“That’s the one.”
“Yeah,” Light kept skimming through the closet, “What about it?”
“Put it in tonight,” L insisted, “When we get home, I’m thinking we move some furniture around.”
“Really?” Light climbed onto the bed, getting a quick kiss out of his boyfriend, “You know, if this were any other time, I’d tell you no.”
“But…?”
“But,” Light went on, “It is our first New Year’s together.”
“What?” L pouted, “Do all the other New Year’s we spent working together suddenly not count?  I always thought they were special.”
“Not like that,” Light rolled his eyes, “You know damn well what I mean.”
“Of course, I do,” L pulled Light into his arms, “Our first New Year’s together together.  Yes, I understand.  Does that mean you’ll be a good boy for me and put the plug in?”
Light got up from the bed and took the plug out from its black box in the closet, “I spoil you.”
“And I’m going to absolutely wreck you later,” L got up behind him, “Hurry up.  Your parents are expecting us.”
“Alright, alright,” Light went back into the bathroom and finished getting ready while L grabbed the small fruit basket Light had picked up on his way home earlier in the day.
Then, the moment finally arrived.  L and Light got into L’s car and headed for Light’s parents’ house.  It had been a while since L had seen Soichiro, but they were cordial enough with each other.  Sure, Soichiro still wasn’t overly thrilled L was dating his son, but he also wasn’t going to complain.  It wasn’t his decision, nor his life to meddle with, so Soichiro let it slide.  The last time L and Light had seen the rest of Light’s family was early November.  Just before L and Light had left for London.  So, naturally…
“LIGHT!” Sayu was the first to jump them at the door.  She threw her arms around his waist.
And Light winced a bit, still feeling the plug inside him, “Hi, Sayu.”
Sayu stretched her arms out to L, knowing how he was about suddenly being touched in any way, shape, or form.  But it was also Sayu.  Just because she could respect boundaries didn’t mean she wouldn’t ask, “Come on, L.  I haven’t seen you in forever.  And it’s New Year’s!”
L wrestled with it for a moment or two, but he couldn’t tell her no, “Fine.  This one time, Sayu.”
“Yay!” Sayu hugged him tight.  And as much as he wanted to hate it, he couldn’t.  It was Sayu.  No one could hate anything Sayu did.  She was too sweet, too pure, too innocent.
“Light,” L begged, “Peel your sister off me.”
“You told her it was ok,” Light pointed out, waving a finger at him, “This?  This is all you.  You did that.”
“I’ll remember that,” L nudged Sayu off him.
“You got here just in time, too,” Sayu chirped, “Mom just put out snacks!”
“Hi, Mom!” Light called from the door.
“Hi, sweetheart,” Sachiko came out with a full tray of assorted snacks.  And L saw chocolate covered strawberries.  He wasn’t going to complain, “Oh, L!  I wasn’t expecting to see you tonight, too.”
“Hello, Mrs. Yagami,” L gave her a nod.  Uh-huh.  Where else would I be?  And if you weren’t expecting me, you wouldn’t have made chocolate covered strawberries.  You know how I feel about them.  You know I’m going to probably eat all of them over the course of the evening.  And there’s an even better chance…I’m thinking forty percent…If I ask you to make more, you’ll take the ones out of the basket we gave you and make more for me.  No…Not forty percent.  At the very least, sixty.
“Ryuzaki,” Soichiro greeted him.  He remained cordial.  Soichiro wasn’t going to invite him to a round of golf any time soon, but he could be cordial.
“Mr. Yagami,” L matched his energy, although a touch cockier.
“Hi, Dad,” Light kept his fingers crossed, hoping that the night would go smoothly.
“Hello, son,” Soichiro managed to crack a smile.  Because he could never be angry with Light.  Not his golden child.
“So,” Sayu dragged Light down to the couch.  And the moment Light fell, he really felt L’s plans for later hitting him, “We were just about to start the movie.”
“What movie?” L wondered.
“It’s the same one we’ve watched every year for as long as I can remember,” Sayu told him, “My Neighbor Totoro!”
“Really?”
“I know, I know,” Light rolled his eyes, “It’s kind of lame, but it’s been my thing with Sayu since she was little.”
“It’s not at all,” L sat next to him, “It’s one of Near’s favorites, too.  I’m not going to judge.”
“Good!” Sayu chirped, sitting on the other couch.
“Alright then,” Sachiko pressed a kiss on top of each of her children’s heads, “Behave yourselves.  We should be back in a little while.”
“What?” Light perked up, “What do you mean?  Where are you two going?”
“Aizawa and his wife invited us out tonight,” Soichiro explained, “I’ve been blowing him off for weeks now, so I kind of owe him.”
“It’s a shame,” L sighed out, “It really would’ve been nice to talk to you tonight, Mr. Yagami.  We don’t get to do that anymore.”
L could see it all over Sachiko’s face.  She didn’t want to go out.  She didn’t want to leave her babies.  And if L could get through to her, they wouldn’t be leaving.  Fortunately for L, Light wasn’t the only one he had wrapped around his finger, “Soichiro…It’s New Year’s.  And we hardly ever get to have the family together anymore.  I’m sure Shuichi could wait until after New Year’s.”
“He already got a sitter for the night,” Soichiro pointed out.
“Then, he and his wife can have a nice evening together,” Sachiko begged, “Please?  Do we really have to?”
“Well…” Soichiro would never let anyone know it, but he had a soft spot for his wife.  And once she asked nicely, he knew he was done, “I guess we can call it off with them.”
“Thank you, sweetheart,” Sachiko kissed her husband’s cheek and sat down.
“Light,” L whispered in his ear, “Go to your room.  Take the plug out.”
“What?” Light let out a little gasp, “Are you nuts?”
“No,” L took on a firmer tone, “Go.  Take the plug out.  And come back here with a blanket.”
“Alright,” Light wasn’t going to fight him.  He wasn’t quite sure where L was going with it, but he knew better than to ask.  That would be for later.  So, just as he was told, Light went upstairs.
“Hmm,” Soichiro noticed him out of the corner of his eye, “Where’s he off to?”
“I don’t know,” L shrugged, “He just said he needed to go upstairs for something.  It is nice to see you again, though, Mr. Yagami.  How are you?”
“I’m fine,” Soichiro looked at him strangely, not expecting small talk already, “How are you?”
“Curious,” L cocked his head, “Why don’t you like Light and me together?”
“Here we go,” Sayu paused the movie.
“I never said I didn’t like you and Light together,” Soichiro admitted, “Actually, upon further thought and speculation, Light could be with much worse.”
“I understand you’re worried about your son,” L agreed, “But I’m more than capable of taking care of him.  I don’t seem like much, that’s true, but wouldn’t you want him to end up with someone as accomplished as I am?”
“Well…” Soichiro knew L had him backed into a corner.  But he wasn’t going to fight him, “Of course, I do.”
“But there’s something else,” L assumed, “Isn’t there?”
“Not really.” I know what you’re like.  I worked with you for four years.  I’m curious as to how many of those years you were in love with my son.  How many of those days I would walk into work and you would be thinking of my son in the most impure fashion.  What you could’ve been doing behind my back.
“I’m sure there isn’t.” You’re lying.  Your right eye twitched and you started fiddling with your wedding ring.  You’re very much a traditionalist.  And the fact that your son isn’t going the traditionalist route like you thought you raised him to puts a vein in your forehead.  Well…
“Found one,” Light came back with a blanket in his hand.  And a diamond plug in his nightstand drawer.
“Wonderful,” L made a spot for Light on his lap and wrapped the two of them in the blanket, “Thank you, Light.”
“No problem.”
“Light,” L whispered in his ear again, “I’m going to slide the waistband of your pants down and you’re going to keep me warm.  Do you understand?”
“Right here?” Light felt his face grow flush, “Are you serious?”
“Completely,” L confirmed, “Why do you think I wanted you to put the plug in?  You should be ready for me.  And I know damn well you want me, don’t you?”
“Yeah, but…” Light knew L had his kinks.  But he wasn’t sure which one he was exercising.  Still, he let out a heavy sigh, knowing what he was going to get out of it.  It’s no different than the plug, right?  It’s just more skin to skin contact, “Alright.  Go ahead.”
“Thank you,” L started shimmying Light’s pants down and angled himself just right, making sure Light was comfortable.  Although, Light sunk his teeth into the inside of his cheek so hard, he started tasting blood.  He knew he had to be quiet.  He didn’t want to raise any suspicion.  The blanket provided them with ample coverage.  L could feel Light’s warmth and Light could feel L’s length in his lower intestine.  And neither one was upset.  L and Soichiro had a brief moment of eye contact.  And it made L smile. You know, I think I figured you out, Mr. Yagami.  Why you don’t like Light and me together.
Because you know that at the drop of a fucking hat, I could have him calling me daddy, too.

ʚɞ ; dating soichiro yamazaki!
pairing! boyfriend!soichiro x gn!reader.
warnings! mentions of sexual activities.
soichiro—the definition of a fun, sweet, caring, protective, loving, clingy, and teasing boyfriend. he’s everything you want and much more! he’s done much more for you than anyone else around.
soichiro enjoys trying new foods with you just as much as he enjoys small competitions! for example he’ll suddenly place a dish in front of you and ask who can eat the most the fastest and before you know it.. it’s a full blown competition right there.
he has a habit of rubbing his belly after eating a big dish and will look over at you with a pout on his plump lips, almost like a pleading look. he definitely ate too much once again and wants your cuddles.
“angel? can you rub my belly like you always do.”
he’ll grab your cheeks even if you tell him to stop and he’ll make baby sounds as he squishes them and tells you how cute you are. you’ll just have to get use to this because he’s going to do it a lot.
soichiro loves being in front of the camera and when he catches you taking pictures of him he’ll do the weirdest poses or make the dumbest looking faces. it’s now a tradition that you two take weird looking pictures together but also romantic ones.
“let’s take a photo of us drinking our juice boxes!”
soichiro gets overly excited over the smallest things which in a way is very adorable. when you surprise him during practice with a few snacks in hand, he’ll run all the way across the field to you.
soichiro is definitely the type to ask the weirdest questions possible, things that you’ve never thought of before and especially when he’s laying on your chest. he’ll ask and patiently wait for your response to whatever he had just asked you.
he does very small acts of romance! will send you small bouquets of flowers, your favorite candies, feminine care in case you’re out of the things that you need, and he’ll always attach a letter to the gifts. a letter reminding how much he loves you.
soichiro absolutely gushes over your relationship with him. he’ll tell the entire team how much he adores you and can’t wait to marry you. although he makes sure that no one on the team tells you what he says, especially the marriage part of it!
although you tell him no he still runs to the passenger side to open the door for you and help you out. he uses the excuse that you shouldn’t be so hard on yourself even if it’s just opening up the car door. he loves helping you and being close.
“I seen this trend—so will you still love me if I was a small worm that couldn’t hug or kiss you at all?”
“well wait… how are you going to take care of me? look up how to take care of pet worms let me see.”
although he’s a funny, soft, and semi sensitive man.. he’s completely different in bed. he is very dominant and loves taking control over you. everything about your soichiro changes in bed.
loves degrading you just as much as praising you. he will apologize after using such words with you but he knows what you like and uses that to your advantage. he’s a big man and also uses that.
rough. I’ll just say he likes it rough and he enjoys manhandling you around like a doll. that’s what you are, his precious doll and he’s not afraid to show that side of him in bed. is he soft sometimes? of course he is but majority of the time he’s rough.
huge on dirty talk and wanting you to be vocal just like he is. if he knows he’s making you feel good and you won’t speak up? he involves slapping with your consent of course. he asked you about slapping before and made sure you liked it.
prefers to cum inside of you but occasionally like to paint certain parts of your body because he likes the way it looks on you while you’re still a very shaky and whimpering mess after fucking you.
soichiro takes you on dates very often, it’s even gotten to the point where every night is a date night whether it’s indoors or out. he loves to spoil you rotten because he knows you deserve it a lot.

I'm writing a Death Note story and need help with the middle. Send your ideas via DMs, comments, or asks. If I like them, I might even draw them! Also open to Death Note art requests. Share any Death Note-related ideas and I'll see what I can do.
Tumblr media
(and in this case comments too!)
Start and end of the fic under the cut:
God, the rain was gorgeous. L wasn’t usually one to remark or note on the beauty of people; people did things and said things that he couldn’t understand. They hurt and killed and lied; and for what? For only themselves. But the world- the non-people part of the world- was utterly beautiful. L knew why the rain fell. It brought the plants to life. And even though sometimes it felt like nature didn’t have a purpose- like destructive typhoons and hurricanes- he at least understood that these catastrophes weren’t self-serving. The rain had no greed or selfishness; nothing to gain, and so the chaos was out of its control. The rain was always his favourite, grey and rhythmic and cool. Any beauty he saw in a human was simply a reflection of the beauty of the rain. Watari, cool and graceful and methodical as himself, nurturing lost children like they were plants below his sky. Soichiro, stoic and sturdy, creating a calm and intentional rhythm for L to think to. These people and others he had admired for sharing the qualities of the rain he loved, but there was one more. A conundrum that L couldn’t quite place.
Start:
Light Yagami. Not just the rain, but a monsoon. He was endless and unrelenting. No matter how many challenges you gave him, he dodged and weaved until the rainwater had flooded every crack in the moulding and invaded your basement. L wasn’t fond of people getting into his basement. He wasn’t cool and stoic and calm, but he came with a surging heat and a blinding sun and a furious intensity. L was almost sure he was Kira, because like Light, like the monsoon, Kira barely seemed human to him. He didn’t seem to be killing for personal or even corporate gain. Kira had convinced himself and the world that he killed for righteous reasons; for saving the good in humanity, but L couldn’t believe that. Kira killed because like Light, like the monsoon, he simply couldn’t stop.
He had never before been so attracted to a person, yet so repelled. If Light contained a duality and, say, Kira was a north magnet, and Light was a south– then L was north. There was nothing his heart, mind, and the deepest parts of his very soul craved more than a friend- or so he told himself- like Light.
But Light was Kira.
Wasn’t he?
Ending:
He knew it. Of course Light was Kira. There was no way around it. L was doomed by this narrative of friendship he had written for himself. Light was so perfect that L couldn’t have beared to lose him. So charming that the barely human, hardly affectionate, happily lonely L had warmed to him. Welcomed him. Shown him the smallest, quietest parts of himself. But Light was barely human too; becoming less and less by the day. And as L grew more and more attached, Light grew further away. A part of him had known from the very beginning how he would die. It wasn’t a slip-up in safety or privacy, it wasn’t a miscalculation, or a misjudgement of character- in fact he had judged Light perfectly from the very beginning. It was trust that had killed him.
His first, his best and worst friend, using him even now. No doubt faking his grief towards the task force. Or perhaps the grief was real. Despite it all, L couldn’t help but clutch onto the glimmer of hope he kept locked tightly in his ribcage, as the light faded from his eyes, that he could still mean something to Light, despite using him and throwing him aside.
Like he did Misa. Like he would his father and Sayu. Like he did his own soul. Like he did everyone once they stopped being fun to play with. L laughed weakly. Kira really was a child.
He had always known he would die right here, in task force headquarters, where he was supposed to be safe, and at Light’s hand, who was supposed to be his equal. He had imagined dying with a subtle smirk, Light finally incriminated, and a successor lined up to catch him. But in his ideations of death, not once had it occurred to him that it might hurt so much.
The grief, the guilt, the regret, and most of all the gaping wound that Light created, ripping into him with his bare hands and clawing at the insides of his chest, twisting a knife right into his gut as he pretended to care that he was gone.

Thinking about your Hanahaki AU again, with Light this time. He'd definitely rip the flowers out. If he could.
Because, does removing Hanahaki flowers require surgery in this AU? How much does it cost? Can Light even admit himself and get surgery in the middle of the Kira case? Without anyone noticing? How would he even explain to Soichiro or Sachiko that this is why he needs the flowers out?
Plus, as you've said, would L notice? It's very, very likely L would. And he won't let Kira remove those flowers. Afterall, Kira being in love with L would be a very interesting development. How far would Kira go for someone he loves when he can't rid himself of his feelings nor live with those feelings unrequited?
This seems to be a very, very, very bad ending for Light. Unless somehow L ends up falling for Light while trying to stop him from getting Hanahaki flowers removed...
What do you think? How does Light having Hanahaki go in your AU?
I'VE ACTUALLY THOUGHT ABOUT THIS SO UNHINGEDLY THAT I'VE GONE A BIT INSANE BARE WITH ME
So, to address your first question; yes, Light absolutely rips them out :3 You're right that he can't get surgery during the middle of the Kira case because it would bring too much attention to him, AND the fact that yes, the surgery is incredibly expensive and he wouldn't be able to pay for it on his own even if he could find a clinic discreet enough that L couldn't find it. Buuut that doesn't mean that he can't remove them himself! :D
Light is a boy that jerry-rigged a bomb into his desk with shit that he bought at the corner store in an abandoned building with little to no tools—he would absolutely consider it within his abilities to give himself surgery. And he's correct! It would be incredibly dangerous, but for Light everything he does seems to be a Morton's Fork, even if he doesn't see it that way.
I imagine him visiting his school nurse to yoink some medical supplies, finding a way to recirculate his blood as soon as he loses it (possibly by jerry-rigging some other machine to suck the blood up out of any openings he made back into a tube that cycles it right back into his arm veins—idk how that would WORK but Light would find a way I promise you), and then sitting in front of his bedroom mirror to split his chest open while Ryuk watches his lifespan to make sure he's not gonna die.
But the kicker here is this; Light would have to do this multiple times. Because he has to leave the roots of the flowers in or he loses his memory of L, and just like L, he can't afford to lose valuable insight on his opponent in the middle of the game. So once every month (or twice depending how often he sees L) Light cuts himself open and clears out the foliage in his lungs! :D Yes it would be incredibly painful and incredibly tedious and incredibly dangerous, but Light would still do it, because by this point he thinks he can't afford to do anything else. Kira comes before L, yes, but Light's continued existence (with his mental image intact) comes before Kira. Which, ironically, now necessitates continuing to be Kira, even against his own heart's desires.
Despite his ego, Light doesn't actually do many things for personal gain—if he can't convince himself that something would ultimately have an altruistic purpose (and yes furthering Kira's goals does count as an altruistic purpose because Light sees Kira, himself, as altruistic by nature) and it comes at any sort of cost, then he convinces himself he doesn't want it. Being in love with L would be one of those things he denies viciously ✨ He'll say it's obsession, equality, understanding rather than love or affection, because Light has never felt deep respect or affection for anyone other than his family and obviously the Hanahaki has just mistaken his respect for love. Obviously.
Confessing isn't an option. Light would sooner leap in front of a speeding train than confess (in either circumstance of confession in this case). He doesn't even believe he's in actual love with L so he sees it as a moot point. Making L fall in love with him also isn't an option for similar reasons.
If we go the route where L doesn't discover that Light has Hanahaki or at least he discovers it too late, then it wouldn't differ very much from canon. The only difference would be that Light, until the day he dies, would carry around physical proof of his love for L. And the knowledge that it wasn't enough for Light to spare him :') Which would then feed further in to Light's idea that it wasn't REAL love, merely a facsimile of it 💔 Nothing else changes.
BUT—as for L finding out... Well, here's the thing. He would either need to find out before Light's confinement, or after they catch Higuchi. Because during that period where Light loses his memory of being Kira? His Hanahaki goes away :) Yotsuba Arc Light loses his feelings for L because most of the reasons Light loved him before have abruptly become the very same reasons Light hates him as soon as he forgets he's Kira :)
So if L finds out, it's either early enough that he can swap plans entirely (if he wished to), or late enough that he'd have to haul ass to convince Light not to kill him, either by attempting to fall in love with Light or proving him as Kira or somehow, by some miracle of manipulation and seduction and conversation, convince Light to change his mind. BUT—but but but—the sticking point here is that L is not in love with Light. (I don't see Light as the type to feel "unloved" so we're going the Hanahaki Is Omniscient To People's Feelings route instead of it being psychological). And any plans he would make in response to Light's Hanahaki would be dependant on several factors, including but not limited to the strength of his desire to live, the strength of his desire to win, the fact that Light is intellectual equal, the fact that despite Light being his intellectual equal they have very different moral codes and societal views, the pros of keeping Light alive, the cons of keeping Light alive, lust even (if there is any), etc. etc. But not love. You'd have to account for the fact that Light surviving the Hanahaki is not L's top priority. It might not even be high priority. Though I think you're right in that L would make sure Light couldn't get rid of it—he'd find it too interesting see it as too much of a boon to lose. Plus I very much see him as a vindictive little shit, just like Light 💕
So really it's up to how you think L would react! What you think is important to him, what you think his thought processes are, and honestly when you decide that he finds out. Those are all factors in L's decision making process that have to be considered—which is why I don't write from L's pov very often :,D

Ngl I keep hearing Blackbriar songs whenever I think about Idol!Light because he's got Misa's goth aesthetic going on but I can't picture him being completely J-Pop. Does Light sing in a particular genre in the swap au, or is he more focused on the modelling/acting aspect? IS there an acting aspect? And how do Misa and L feel about Light's media creations? 👀👀 Does Matsuda fanboy over Light like he doesMisa in canon?
(Sorry I have so many questions I am far too invested in this AU lol)
NOOOO I LOVE QUESTIONS PLEASE ASK AWAY‼️‼️
HE DOES SING I CORRECTED HIS PROFESSION TO POP IDOL IN THE RELATIONSHIP MAP,, I always imagined light singing songs like Deco*27’s “The Vampire”! if u listen it has a very cutesy upbeat tune but the lyrics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
are certainly something! upbeat and cutesy but undeniably dirty i think is what he’d go with. I don’t know if there’s an acting aspect! maybe because hes a celebrity of a certain niche, but he’s probably primarily a performer.
as for opinions! Soichiro probably takes it the hardest because he’s a very firm traditional man and he seems to have a hard time grasping things he deems out of the usual even if he accepts it. he would never make light stop, but he is undeniably a little disappointed in him.
Misa actually doesn’t think too much about it, she’s a lot more empathetic than L was as the top detective. She grew up in japan for a while because her parents were killed while they were all on a vacation to england and when they died watari pulled some strings and brought her to wammy’s, so she’s aware how strict japanese culture is and she’s a little blind to light’s maliciousness because she sees herself in him. he’s rebellious because no one seems to understand him and despite being a celebrity his peers think he’s a freak because of his demeanor and personality. overall she feels bad for him, but light is light and thinks her pity is unbearably annoying.
L likely likes him distantly for his open rebellion against people who don’t like the unusual (given the fact he grew up in a japanese orphanage so his oddness often separated him from his peers and made him a target for harassment), but he probably doesn’t pay too much attention to him until light starts dropping hints only another death note user could pick up through his songs or announcements. light would want to find kira, but he would never make as bold a move as misa did, he’s more strategic than that.
I dont know if matsuda is a fan, it’s possible given he’s shown he’s capable of thinking outside the norm, but light is likely very anti-government from the start even if he isn’t openly pro-kira so it could go either way.

I love what you write about Light, but I can't stop thinking about how his father sits and watches his son have sex. Especially if he didn't know he had an alpha. He could guess, but see it live. And if there were other people in the room, the level of awkwardness would increase even more. I think L would have a lot of questions after that. But on the other hand, if I were in the place of the alpha, I would give such a show that they would regret the cameras and remove them as quickly as possible. Or, on the contrary, they envied Light. It will be funny if the next day Light's father can't look him in the eye or tries to find out what he knows about sex and contraception. 😆😆😆
Oh, his father knew that the alpha best friend and Light's relationship was very close and he expected it to blossom into a romantic relationship when they were a bit older, but that doesn't mean it isn't one hell of a shock to see his son like that, fucking his alpha best friend in his childhood bedroom.
It's just him and L watching the cameras to protect his family's privacy, and Light's dad can't decide if that's better or worse.
Light's poor father is just sputtering and saying he can't believe his son would do this. He's in some next level denial.
(L just says that he should be happy his son and partner are using condoms as many young people are not as intelligent. Soichiro has never disliked a compliment on his son's intelligence before that point lol)
I'm now imagining L googling stats on young people and when they start having sex to figure out if this is normal. Watching this makes L feel pretty weird but he doesn't want to question why XD
But oh yeah, Light and his alpha put on a show! Light has to act a lot more submissive than normal which bothers him, but other than that they really go at it. (Light is unaware that his father is watching though, he thinks it's only L just saying.)
There aren't any microphones but it's not hard to imagine how loud Light is being from the video.
(Alpha reader lowkey trying to make Light squirt for the audience to prove how well they know his body lmaooo)
Light's dad texts his wife like 'never leave Light home alone again, I'll shop for food on my way home from work.. just... stay at home!'
His wife: 'But Light is so responsible, he can stay home for a few hours alone, dear.'
Soichiro: *horrifying flashbacks of Light's responsibility*
Thanks for sending this in, it made me laugh a lot, I love this dynamic XD

11, 16!
Hii, thank you!! <3
11. if you’re a writer or artist, what fic or piece of art are you proud of making?
Oh my god, a bit difficult because I'm not that proud of any of my fics now that some time has passed akjskds. Or rather, I'm not that proud of their quality but I'm still very proud of the work I put into them!! Because I had to fight demons to finish every one of those fics. And I will never stop being proud of myself for finishing any sort of piece at all.
I think I'm quite proud of all of them in that sense, except for "Stay with me, hold my hand", which I wrote in a rush and is like my least favourite child but I also don't really want to abandon it in a cardboard box (orphan it). But probably my actual favourite one is Only in my dreams which I wrote for a Secret Santa and it was excruciating and I was convinced I wouldn't make the deadline and I edited it a thousand times but I was over the moon to finish it and to have the person it was for like it <3333 And I think it's good! but I also haven't reread it in a while.....
And I'm very proud of a fic I'm writing right now!! I hope I'll post it someday!
16. a tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate
I think a lot of tiny comedy moments in the manga go underappreciated! The manga is so funny and everyone should read it. I also always want more people to appreciate Sayu, if she counts as a detail (SHE'S NOT A DETAIL TO ME), and the Yagami family in general... Both because of their fun light moments and also because they're insane. The latest Yagami family Detail I have come across in my reread, and therefore the only thing I can think of, is the fact that Sayu apologizes for having been careless enough to get kidnapped (everybody think a moment about how these two kids were raised. Is anybody listening to me), and Soichiro then announces that he is going to quit his job because he is a failure as a police officer for having rescued his kidnapped daughter Right In Front of said kidnapped daughter. I guess this isn't really that underappreciated because I've seen multiple people comment on it but......
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also the conversation Soichiro and Sachiko have shortly after Sayu's kidnapping:
Tumblr media
Wow. This family loves each other and is insane. Anyway, yeah!! Thank you for the ask!!

idk if u already answers these, but 22 24 & 30 for the fic ask game thingy!
22. Share an excerpt from your favorite scene
i don't actually have a favourite scene. everything i write has something that makes it my favourite, but this one gets me everytime. it's from my italian Near & OCs fic that i'll never translate completely in english because i can't. this part though
"You were on the news." Said Near, as Ali arranged the two boxes on the piano. "My reputation precedes me…" Veronica whispered, casting a glance in the direction of the other worker. "Your friend's date is dead." He continued. "A real Take Me Out." Ali joked, receiving a look from Near, which completely extinguished the nervous smirk on her lips. "I was joking…" 'It was funny, I must give her that,' he said to himself, showing no sign of amusement on his face.
it's a wordplay on the game show Veronica and her friend went on, and it makes me laugh everytime. Alitash's humour >>>
i miss writing these characters because i stopped writing it after 3/4 chapter because i just didn't have the motivation
24. What's something that surprised you while you were working on a fic? Did it change the story?
that i don't know how to do basic math and missed an year in my mazzaroth's timeline so i had to find a way to fill it and the solution was just so simple. did it change the story? yes and no. like, yes, i will have to write less so that's good, but also no, because the consequences or what Ethe will have to do are the same, just in a different year.
30. What's something that you want to write in 2024?
my Matsuda/L/Aizawa & Soichiro & Watari holiday fic!! it's mostly done but i have a hard time putting more L's personality in it lol
also finish the naomi misora au i started to write last year.
i would also love to continue the italian story i was talking about and the mellodramattic college AU i completely abandoned.
realistically, i'll probably just continue Mazzaroth, finish the holiday fic and maybe write the L/OC (Agent Náli) shortfic but who knows. i have so many things to do
thanks!!

L is for Love
Author: @ironblowtorch
For: @shin-knee-gami
Pairings/Characters: Lawlight, Remisa, Light Yagami, L, Rem, Misa
Rating/Warnings: T, homophobic/self-hating gay boy Light, slight horror elements
Prompt: Lawlight au where either L or Light is a merman!!
Author’s notes: I hope you enjoy this story!! I had such a fun time writing it! I wish I had the time to write more, I love how L didn’t try to hide any part of himself from Light! Mermaid AU’s are my new favorite! Enjoy!
When his father first had told him they would be getting away to an ocean town for the summer, Light imagined warm beach sand and gentle waves along his toes as the soft breeze carried away his worries. Instead they were unpacking the car next to some humid looking swamp… a saltwater swamp.
“I thought you told me this town was tropical…” Light muttered as he was handed their bags to help carry into the apartment. His father gave him his best ‘be quiet, this is how it’s going to be’ look and waved him off once his hands were full. Light frowned and turned to start making the trek to the top floor their last minute housing happened to be situated in.
For once, it was just the two of them out here for the entire summer together without his sister or mother… Light didn’t really know what to make of the whole thing. This past year… his entire life had completely turned upside down and gone downhill, it had fallen fully off track and out of Light’s control. So his father packed them both up, just the two of them, picked a police assignment on the other side of Japan, and drove them there the first day of summer vacation. Light wasn’t used to getting so much time alone with his father, and while he looked up to the man greatly, he really just wanted to spend the summer reading or getting ready for his college entrance exams. His dad, in a very uncharacteristic act, banned all school and college work. He said it was time Light took a break from all that for once and relaxed, made friends, and lived different parts of his life. Light hated the idea but hoped maybe he could at least help with the police case. He also wondered why he couldn’t do any of this with Sayu or his mom around, but his dad explained she had to have some serious homework and housework to complete this summer. She had been opposite her brother, and had been slacking all year hanging with her friends.
His dad was always very open and obvious about the roles he wanted for his kids. Light the perfect son, a model copy of Soichiro who would follow in his footsteps one day. Sayu got a much less intense job of a perfect wife and mom, Light thought. Then again he didn’t really want to be responsible for the grandkids. But considering the new information that got leaked and led to him being here, Light figured kids were off the table for him anyway.
He huffed and he lifted his heavy suitcase over the final step. He knew he over packed all his outfits, but he really didn’t know what to bring! He had never been away from home for so long before. It did look like it would turn out to be a good thing for him though, considering the swamp brought a colder chill than the warm summer ocean. How dare his own dad glamorize the nature of this small ugly town he was stuck in. This place was not a vacation town at all!
He didn’t want to leave his sister, he didn’t want to relax and stop working towards the future, he didn’t want to break out of his comfort zone… but as he glared at the front door to this musty apartment, he figured he had no other choice now.
~~~
When Light comes back outside, he notices his father is no longer unpacking the car. He spots him across the street at another apartment, having a nice chat with an old man. He decides now is a good time to take a moment to explore the swamp a bit. Light knows his dad can get roped into longer chats with strangers, and he’s curious about what the water might look like out near the dock out past the trees. After putting his phone and new door keys in his pockets, he hurried down the path that curves around the building and into the tunnel of trees.
The smell of wet moss and dirt is overwhelming, it would be comforting to someone who called a place like this home. Light is not that person, he had never been anywhere close to this much nature and water and… wet. He lived his entire life in the same house near the city. The marchy muddy path under his crisp white sneakers made his face curl in disgust. As soon as he saw what the ocean looked like at the dock he would turn back and possibly avoid this area altogether the entire summer. He could just travel to the other side of town where the resort was so he could get a nice tan and read (for fun, not for school) by the water. That sounded like a much better plan. He only needed to do this once.
He followed the muddy path down until the fireflies and sky lit up a dock sticking out into the water. He sighed as he took in the surprisingly lovely sight. He let his feet carry him down to the dock and he even chose to sit on the edge, his feet hanging just above the water surface. The waves only grew bigger with each crash against the rocky and marshy shore.
He let himself sit for at least an hour, the smell becoming calming and the noises around him filling him with a sense of peace he would never find in the city.
He breathed the fresh air and then pulled himself up, enjoying the quiet yet loud ocean noises. Maybe he will come back to this place….
Just as he turned to leave, he heard movement in the water… Like something large was swimming. He gasped and held his breath as he slowly backed away. He had read that furious alligators and crocodiles lived in the saltwater… oh no… he thought he saw a green tail… no, not green… blue?
What would have a blue tail in a swamp? He paused and kept quiet, finding himself more curious than scared suddenly. Maybe he spotted something rare…
Suddenly, the tail slowly moving through the water flicked and a huge splash erupted from the water! Light yelled as he was instantly soaked and he fell onto his back. What was that!
“Who dares come to my swamp???” He suddenly heard in a voice like the sound of rain hitting the ground, sharp and loud yet somehow calm and firm. He gasped and quickly pulled himself up, running but falling against a tree. “There is no use in running, human. I already saw your face. You are wise to leave before I bite you clean in half.” He heard the voice hiss, and when he looked back to the water, he spotted a head popping out of the water. Oh god, what was that? He felt himself scream as he met the gray eyes staring at him. The face he saw looked human but… different. Blue and green scales were covering the cheeks, the mouth was thin and slimy. His eyes… so full of emotion. The black mess of hair on his head looked like it had never been brushed… his eyes traveled down… he saw the bare human chest slowly melt down into a… a tail! The blue green tail was that of an alligator, curling slowly at the end.
No way… he was dreaming he was… he was totally imagining this… no way… there was no way a mermaid was talking to him….
“Did you not hear me?? GO NOW!” The voice shouted and Light couldn’t have ran faster up the mudded path.
He ran and then found himself back in the parking lot, panting and out of air. “Oh my god… no… no way…” he kept muttering, completely in shock from what he just saw.
After a minute he felt a hand on his back and he jumped but then saw his dad above him. “Son? Are you alright? I was just coming to find you… did you go on a long walk? You look tired…”
Light swallowed all his fear and pushed his hair back. “I… I’m fine. Hi dad. It’s alright… Can we go back to the apartment?”
His dad didn’t look convinced but slowly nodded. “Yes yes… I need to tell you about this party for teens you must go to tonight…”
~~~
And now here he was. Trapped. He was positive he was being punished this summer. His dad must hate him. He was being forced to attend the local teen party. It was awful… it even had a theme. It was an American Style BBQ. But it was raining so hard all the food was undercooked and not at all BBQ. He wanted to die.
Light stood awkwardly in the corner of the room, his fingers wrapped around a root beer bottle that was supposed to hide the fact he would never touch a drink until he could order it in the bar. He knew no one here and it unsettled him. Back home, at least before he was forcefully outed, he was popular! He knew each guy in the room. Speaking of which, this room was only full of guys…
Light had learned that the old man his father had been chatting up while Light was daydreaming up fish men in the swamp so happened to be the sheriff in town. He also owned the local orphanage and housed pretty much the entire teen population in town. Almost all of them are smart, young, boys. Of course it was full of boys. He helped out kids who had nowhere to go and forced them to work as cops when they grew up. (At least that’s what Light had gathered and would gossip.)
There was one boy his father wanted him to meet, the old man’s adopted son. He was the local popular boy it seemed because Light had been hunting for the damn kid for an hour with no luck. His name was Ryuzaki, and his dad mentioned he would be late. Light thought four hours late was just rude though.
All of a sudden, he spotted the only girl in town it seemed. She was absolutely beautiful with a goth look to her style, her blonde pigtails bouncing as she hopped to the music and walked around the crowd towards where Light was standing.
“HEEEYY! You’re that new kid! Oh thank god, I was soooo bored~! I was just in the other room painting Ryuzaki’s nails… haha he’s never going to get that gel polish off him….” She laughed evilly then covered her mouth. “OH! Where are my manners…. I’m Misa Amane. I live here in Whammy’s house. You’re Light, right? Let’s go sit over here so we can chat like real friends do!” Before Light could even smile at her she had grabbed him and started to pull him to the crowd.
Soon enough they were sitting at a large couch tucked away by the front door. It actually was a lot quiet despite everyone walking in and out. He wasn’t sure what to make of the whole thing. “So… You know Ryuzaki? I’ve been looking for him…” Light admitted as he took a sip of the now flat root beer.
Misa smirked happily and leaned in. “Yup! Who doesn’t know him? He’s Like, the most popular guy here, and we are waaay overpopulated on guys here. I guess now that you’re in town we finally have someone else to talk about. Though, the two of you… you’re so alike somehow…”
Misa smirked and looked over Light carefully, then nodded. “Yup, you’re just like Ryuzaki. The sheriff’s son, a perfect student, smart and quirky. Though you are a lot… more well groomed than him though. But you both are still really popular! He has guys and gals going goo goo Gaga over him always.” She giggled. “Ryuzaki is very introverted but since his grandpa is in charge of him, and is super busy running the town and keeping everything calm, he has to be out and about all the time. He is always late cause he always has somewhere to be.” She shrugged. “Who knows if he’s single or not I guess, he’s kinda closed off for a popular guy.”
“Well, Misa, did you come to a summer beach American style  BBQ alone tonight?” Light felt himself smirk as he looked her over. It was a new town, okay? Maybe he could make up a new persona and pretend he was just a normal perfect straight guy again. Right?
“My partner should be here any second!!” Misa blushed and looked away. “Though I’m flattered. You really are handsome. Be careful, Ryuzaki is a flirt at first… just like you. ” she sighed then slowly scanned the room for her… wait what had she said?
Light blinked and looked over at Misa. Partner. Partner? “Your partner…?” as in, dating?
Misa beamed brightly and stood up, setting her drink down just as this so-called ‘partner approached them. “Rem!!!” She jumped up and down before she was pulled into a hug by a much larger body.
“Misa… my love, I apologize for being late.” The large person hugging Light’s new friend had a deep rough voice. Light wondered why Misa said partner and not boyfriend if she was in fact dating a boy.
Then Rem smiled at Misa as she pulled away and Light caught sight of her shiny hair and jewelry and piercings and purple glitter makeup. He swallowed hard and looked away. Misa was… gay like him?? And open about it?
Rem turned and gave a disapproving gaze in Light’s direction as she wrapped an arm around Misa’s shoulders tightly. “And who might this be then?” She looked tense? “We don’t get new people in town often… if ever.”
Misa smiled and relaxed against her despite the rigid hold she was in. “This is Light. Chief Yagami’s son. They came to help Mr. Whammy or whatever.” She shrugged and nudged her partner. “Can we get some punch please? The food is already cold anyways. I bet the ice has melted too.”
Rem smiled and kissed her forehead. “How about I take you to a Waffle House instead, my beloved?”
Misa grinned brightly and nodded. “Right now!!! Bye bye Light!!! Say hi to Ryuzaki for me!!!”
Rem gave a small wave but no smile and turned Misa away. She leaned down and whispered, though Light could clearly hear it. “I do not like him.”
Misa laughed and pulled her away, starting up a long rant as they walked outside.  Light frowned and sat down on the couch again, alone.
  ~~~
He really didn’t know how he ended up in this situation.
Shortly after Misa left, he had been faced with the task of hunting down Ryuzaki. He had found the asshole, he was on a couch surrounded by tons of other teen guys. All were clearly flirting. Uhm… aren’t they all technically brothers since Watari watched over them?? Gross! Leave some of the Ryuzaki for Light!
After they had introduced themselves, (For some reason, Ryuzaki told Light to call him L?) L stated he needed chocolate but it would be an impossible task to peel the tin foil off with his wet fingernails Misa gave him. So now Light was faced with a bowl of chocolate and a pleased looking Ryuzaki.
Light sincerely hoped Ryuzaki wouldn’t expect him to place the chocolate squares directly into his mouth(though he secretly hoped he would at least ask. Light would say no and daydream about it later), but as he started to unwrap the foil from each piece and place it onto the plate, L just stared at him, smirking.
Light pushed the plate to him and looked up to meet his sparkling gray eyes… This guy was weird. “Is five pieces enough for you?”
L laughed and grabbed the bowl and shoved it into Light’s arm before he placed the plate carefully in his own hands. “Hardly. Best we take it all. Let’s find somewhere we can sit and… chat.” His smirk mellowed out as he tugged Light away from the main room of the party, towards the porch.
“W-wait… outside? Isn’t the weather disgustingly awful tonight?” Light panicked at the thought of his hair getting messed up or his sweater getting drenched and shrinking. He slowed down and spotted a couch in a small sunroom, away from everyone. “Hey, what about here?” Now he tugged Ryuzaki and pointed, then smiled when he got a nod of approval in return.
The sunroom was lovely. Filled with plants and flowers all smelling amazing, thriving despite the swamping marshy and dark cloudy skies that seemed to be the norm in this strange town.
“Wow…” Light froze and let his eyes drift around the room, then let them land on the small sitting area near the corner window. The lavish gray couch was surrounded by books and was set up perfectly for them two. “This room is wonderful.”
L smiled and led Light over to the couch. “Many orphans at Whammy’s lean towards one specific interest. I have forgotten who set up this room, but I agree, it’s masterpiece is quite noticeable.” He shifted his shirt off over his head like that was a totally normal thing to do and instead wrapped himself in a fuzzy blanket, then moved to… sort of squat on the couch, hands on his knees.
His chest was exposed. Light gulped and forced his gaze away, landing on the coffee table. Why did he just take his shirt off? He set the bowl there and promptly sat down.
L sighed and gently plopped a chocolate in his mouth, then examined his fingers. “Unfortunately I must be leaving soon. Have you met Watari? That crazy old man keeps my schedule packed to the minute most days. It’s bloody summ-“ he coughed and paused, looking away.  Was that… A British term?“I just mean to say I’d like a break every once and awhile.”
Light looked at him again as he settled himself into the couch, starting to peel open more chocolate after a moment. L looked sad and worst of all, lonely.
“What does he have you doing all the time?” He contemplated his next words carefully. “I have the opposite problem, this summer. I have a lot I’d rather be focusing on than relaxing. I need to get into the proper university, and I was going to go to an extra cram school next month…” Light sighed and gently set the left over tin pieces on the table. “Relaxing isn’t something I’m used to.”
Light gently placed the next chocolate directly on L’s hand since it was so close, and as their fingers brushed the heat of their touch melts some chocolate into each of their skin. Light gulped and quickly pulled away, fighting his blush hard.
L smirked and took the square into his mouth and slowly licked his fingers. Light couldn’t fight the blush as he met his eyes again. Oh god…
“Have you noticed how alike we are, Light-Kun?” He smirked and sucked on his thumb before he let go and grabbed another chocolate. Just who the hell was this guy?
“You know, that isn’t the first time I’ve heard that today…” Light sighed and unwrapped the final piece from the bowl, looking at it with an intense gaze. He figured once the chocolate was gone L either wouldn’t care to be around anymore, or he would be forced to leave. Light held it tight between his fingers as it slowly started to melt away. “Misa said we seem a lot alike…”
L scoffed at that and sucked on the piece in his mouth. “She always has something to say, honestly. She’s like the only girl who lives in the orphanage… poor thing.” He laughed and leaned back, turning to stare at the chocolate Light neglected to offer. “Oh, the last one?”
Light nodded softly and looked up at him. “Y-yeah… I’m glad I could help. It’s really been nice meeting you.” He gave a small smile and tilted his head earnestly. He could honestly say he had never met someone like L before. It was very interesting and not at all someone he should go after if he was trying to deny being gay…
L paused and smiled back, his fingers wrapping around Light’s wrist slowly. “I must agree. For me in fact, it’s been enchanting to meet you. You’re quite interesting, Light Yagami….” He leaned in close, but instead of his mouth taking the chocolate, his lips came close and pressed carefully against Light’s own.
Light gasped and leaned in quickly, his hand resting on L’s bare chest. Oh my god! Oh my god…. Oh my god! L was kissing him! If he wasn’t so busy self destructing from getting his first kiss, Light would have kissed or at least fought back!
Suddenly the glass door had swung open and they were faced with the angry faces of two younger teens Light had avoided the entire party. The blonde was dressed in… nothing but black leather. And the other was covered in the smell of cigarettes and alcohol as well as wearing a god awful prison looking sweater. These two were just a couple of walking no thank you’s to Light and he hated that this wonderful moment in the history book of his life was being ruined by them.
“Uhmmm excuse me L?” The blonde spat as he tossed his ugly little bobbed hair around. “You might think you have time to sneak away and snog with the new local pretty boy, but tonight happens to be the strongest storm and tide this town has seen in WEEKS! You hella don’t have time to be kissing anything but the ocean tonight!”
L rolled his eyes and slowly licked the chocolate from the corner of his mouth, pulling away from the couch and Light slowly. “Mello… Ah! I mean, M… please calm down. You’re overreacting. If we left in twenty minutes the storm would still be over by midnight…” He stretched his arms and the blanket fell to the floor dramatically. Light’s face shaded to red as he turned to stand up himself. They were talking like they could control the weather or something…
The redhead next to this Mello guy also looked mad but he seemed to know when to speak up and when to let the other do the work. He sucked on a lollipop that Light was sure he wished was a smoke.  Light really didn’t care for either of them at all…
L turned to him with a frown and grabbed his hand. “We will meet again soon.” Then, completely unexpectedly, he kissed Light’s hand before he pulled away to leave. “Okay, let’s get out there. Go collect the other’s and I’ll make sure we have everything.” He even managed to shoot Light a wink as he went out the door.
Light flopped back to sit on the couch again, breathless and blushing. This was going to be a long summer if L was around…
“What kind of a name is L anyway?” Light grumbled to himself as he shoved all the tin foil trash onto the floor in frustration. Confetti to celebrate the next chapter in his story… “Maybe the name L meant something… perhaps Love?” Light paused as he pondered out loud. “What a stupid thing to think…”
L laughed loudly and slowly came back into the room, and Light felt his entire soul jump out of his skin. “Oh my god!” He yelped and fell back onto the couch. He barely had a second to catch his breath before L was looming over him, a curious expression on his face.
“I left my shirt on the couch… uh, what was that about L being for Love?” He laughed and leaned down, bumping their noses together. “You would be most disappointed in the true meaning…”
Light gasped and found himself sitting up slowly, their faces never moving away. They kept their gaze as he moved to take L’s hand slowly… it took all his bravery but he pulled himself closer, their lips almost touching again. “So tell me… what does it mean?”
L swallowed and looked like he was the nervous one for the first time, as he broke their gaze. “I will tell you… but in exchange, you simply must let me take you on a date tomorrow. Once the weather is clear again.” He smirked and gripped his hand tighter, meeting his eyes again.
Light really wasn’t sure what it was about L that somehow convinced him everything would be alright. Even though he knew he could never have his old life back, even if L really turned out to be a mermaid, even if it meant he really was gay and he would never be the perfect son… he could be alright. Light would be okay so long as he could pretend L’s name meant love.
“Okay, I’ll let you date me… tell me.” He was more eager than ever as he leaned close.
L sighed and pulled him into his chest, a proper cuddle if anyone were to see, and rubbed his back. “L means Lost at Sea…. I was the first of my kind… I was abandoned by my parents in the middle of a hurricane. Lost…” He sighed and turned his head away.
Light frowned and tensed up. He didn’t expect that… “Oh.” He looked up at him and then cupped his cheek to force their gazes together again. “I think Love suits you better… Perhaps L is for Lover” He smiled and ran his thumb along his jaw. “L… lovely name really.”
L looked frozen. “I… I suppose that you may think of it that way, yes…” He slowly smiled and leaned in close. “Or perhaps it means ‘let me kiss you…”
Light laughed and pushed his hand over L’s mouth. “How forward! Imagine having to introduce yourself like that…”
L laughed and grabbed his hand away, moving in for it again. “It is a name reserved only for Light. Now then… Can you say it?”
Light smirked and couldn’t help himself. “Okay… ‘let me kiss you, L… Love…” He smiled and pushed close, finally having their lips meet.
And so in the moment L was for Love.
Lately more I think of death note I feel that light never used death note for justice but more for justifying his mistake. Let me explain:-
Light was traumatized after killing people but somehow he convinced himself that he was the chosen one. He has a habit of justifying his action/mistake. He even did during sayu's kidnapping. When ryuk asked why he will use death note to punish criminals he said because "I was bored". Yes, light did seem unhappy with justice system but I don't think he would use death note purposefully for that, in yotsuba arc he calls kira murderer. He also killed innocent people like fbi agent, Naomi Misora, Lind L Tailer(in beginning he seemed so) he mocked both Lind L Tailor and Naomi Misora after writing their name on death note. Lying to kiyomi takada and later when she realises he is cheating he responds "why are women like this". If he really cared about justice why hurt innocent people. I feel like it was his was for justifying his mistake. Your thoughts?
Mm, Light's complicated blend of motives is one of the things that makes his character as well-written and interesting as it is.
The way he first started using the notebook in the manga and first became a murderer, and everything about his upbringing and life circumstances, makes the path he takes one you can sort of understand logically and emotionally, even if not agree with or condone. I think he needed to justify becoming a murderer to himself by seeing it as for an altruistic noble cause because he had grown up seeing people like violent criminals as a despicable and lesser type of beings. He saw the current justice system as flawed and inefficient, and criminals as a certain category of inherently morally deficient people, because of growing up a sheltered prodigy in Soichiro's home. He couldn't bear the thought of being seen as a "despicable murderer" himself, either in his own mind or by people like his family. We see how he becomes curious to test out the notebook, but also first specifies it should be the kind of person who "deserves to die," and then picks a victim who most people would agree is a very scummy and destructive person (someone violently endangering a bunch of innocent children). But his criteria for who "deserves to die" shifts quickly to anybody defying him, or standing in his way, or wounding his ego, once he really gets in deep with his plans. And he knows it is wrong on some level, but he excuses it to himself by saying that it will all be worth it in the end once the world is perfectly free of everyone corrupt, and that anybody trying to stop him is basically keeping him from saving the world – which he believes he is the best possible person and only possible person who could actually do so, because of how much he has always been told he is exceptional by everybody else. I think he genuinely believes in his ideals about justice and right and wrong, but at the start he is also having fun being a rebel and concocting all his secret schemes and tricking all the clever people around him too. He is also very afraid of being seen as flawed and mistaken, and of being caught and put to death, and of the shame and embarrassment and sorrow it would cause his loved ones. I think he hides that from the audience and himself most times, and usually compartmentalizes it by telling himself he is right and that they will eventually believe he is too once he "wins". It's really hard to pick only one or the other thing that drives Light to do what he does, and I think it's nearly impossible to untangle all his various motives from each other and claim it was definitely only one thing or the other that drove him to do what he did.
I remember being scared by death note back when I watched it 6 years ago as a kid , I was really really traumatised because of Naomi, L and Soichiro's death and stopped watching the remaining episodes and only watched the ending and then got traumatised by Light's death too and I think most probably Misa's too. In particular, I was really traumatised by the way in which Light killed Naomi and then killed L and I don't remember why I was traumatised by Soichiro's death, Light's death though broke me the most, because of not watching the whole series back then I thought he died in a pathetic way , even though now after rewatching I think that the his death was handled in a really humane way . I remember crying too much for this series and most probably I think I was just traumatised by Light and not the whole show, but I really don't remember that much , what I do remember is that I really really couldn't hate Light at all or there were definitely feelings of hate and love at the same time , he was such an interesting character, back then a lot of people I knew hated him and I remember constantly berating myself for not hating the character and why I just couldn't hate him like other people, glad I moved on and stopped caring about what other people say , I don't know how people can hate such an interesting character, he's a fictional character anyways, why do people can't draw a line between reality and fiction? I felt really sad as a kid , dn was one of my first anime and seeing everyone hating on him around him . Dn has influenced me a lot even though it made me a lot anxious as a 12 year old and gave me sleeping troubles at times .
Sorry for the long and weird ask , I just wanted to ask if people do get traumatised by death note ? I got a lot hopeless after watching that show and was really scared of Light while watching, I do love him as a character but he always made me anxious and scared. Now , I don't feel scared at all of him but back then , he gave me goosebumps all the time , I think I watched death note a little bit too young for my mind and got too emotional, but still if it wasn't for this show , I wouldn't have developed any interests in mystery shows and even tragedies.
You can ignore this ask if you find it too weird , it's too long anyways.
Ah, I don't think you're alone with that. There are lots of people who watched, read or played something they were too young for. I certainly consumed media that wasn't appropriate for me as well, and I had my fair share of nightmares because of that, haha.
I personally never found Death Note scary, but not only was I considerable older than 12 when I first read it, I'm also more scared of…other things. But everyone is going to react different to stories like that, you know.
Light is an intimidating character, and if you imagine someone like him as a real person, I can understand why someone would find him scary. The death scenes you mentioned, especially Naomi's, certainly are hard to stomach.
