Are we obliged to be faithful to our errors, even when we realize that through this faithfulness we are injuring our higher self? — No, there exists no law, no obligation, of this kind; we have to become traitors, be unfaithful, again and again abandon our ideals. We cannot advance from one period of our life into the next without passing through these pains of betrayal and then continuing to suffer them.
Friedrich Nietzsche, Human, All Too Human, 629

Suffering might take the form of anger towards others, despair over my life, or anxiety about the future. It might be one of these feelings one day and another the next. All of these feelings drain me, and I expend enormous energy trying to appease them. For the conflict between my ideal and reality is not a passive consequence. It is a battle I actively maintain. I manipulate my attention and actions in response to my suffering, and I quickly use up all of my resources.

The ancients used to say: mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur — the world wants to be deceived, so let it be deceived.

In an era of globalization, we recognize that we are part of a global society, but we have no idea how to make such a society work. So far, no unified vision or leadership has emerged to guide us in this endeavor. We have not yet found a way to expand the spiritual ideals of democracy so that they pertain to every human being, every animal, and every plant. Until we do, human civilization and the Earth's ecosystem will continue to be in peril.

Ideals
An American Colleague: "I gotta admit; before I came here, I thought Canada had sort of traded guns and Manifest Destiny Badassery for Star Trek's Humanist values. I, uh... I'm kinda disappointed."
Me: "Yeah, we're a lot closer to Marvel's idea of Canada than anything Gene Roddenberry would've pencilled in."
AAC: "What do you mean? What's Marvel's idea of Canada?"
Me, sipping coffee on Slack's video-call module: "The land of bilingual smiles and friendliness that actually hides deeply troubling war crimes behind a thin veneer of seemingly-universal acceptability. Think residential schools, widespread clear-cutting to attract corpo investors, the Weapon X program..."
AAC: "Wait, what?! Canada made the Weapon X program?!"
Me: (nodding) "And Deadpool and Sabertooth, in some continuities. Plus, Wolverine is pretty much the Fantasy Canadian par excellence; no funny way of saying about but he does call people bub. Ryan Reynolds should've worked with Hugh Jackman to actually develop a correct Wolverine alternate, where his primal instincts are at odds with the niceness of your average Albertan and he turns apologetic as soon as he skewers someone with his claws. Also, that particular Wolverine alternate needs to have put in a year or two in Second-Language French, and to only recall bits and bobs of the language."
AAC: "Huh. Wolvie isn't terribly Canadian, now that I think of it..."
Me: "Which is why Alpha Flight feels like a big, clumsy and well-meaning representational Band-Aid..."

Tradition means giving votes to the most obscure of all classes, our ancestors. It is the democracy of the dead. Tradition refuses to submit to the small and arrogant oligarchy of those who merely happen to be walking about.

You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment. Fools stand on their island of opportunities and look toward another land. There is no other land; there is no other life but this.

We know that some belief we have about how we should act is an ideal by the very fact that it can become a stable habit while still allowing for unlimited growth. A person can practice courage, for example, by doing a courageous action. If he follows this action with more courageous actions, he will be on his way to becoming courageous. And yet, no matter how many courageous acts he performs, there will always be room for growth. He does not have the habit at first, but by consistently acting with courage, he develops the habit, which makes acting courageously easier and more rewarding. As we pursue an ideal by challenging ourselves to put it into practice, we find that the path gets progressively easier, more enjoyable, and more meaningful. Growing closer to the ideal is inherently rewarding — hence the old adage, "Virtue is its own reward" [Ipsa quidem pretium virtus sibi].

I dream of a future where my life and the world around me will be better than they are now. This dream can be a source of hope, but it can also become a problem. For I will eventually reach a point in my life where it is unlikely that things will get better for me personally. They will instead begin to alternate between staying the same and getting slowly worse. This is not pessimism but the actual reality of aging for every human being.
Seeing this reality approaching, I might feel there is no hope left for me and fall into despair. But like all suffering I face, overcoming despair is a matter of attention and awareness. When I have confined my life to my own personal existence, I am not seeing very far or very clearly.
