Jegulus is sold as marauders drarry but it's actually marauders hinny (rip off version). ginny is similar to james (hot, popular, jock) and harry resembles regulus (sad emo boy as we see it in fanon).

also there's the whole best friend's younger sibling. I guess it would be impossible to have Lucius x James (like Drarry & Scorbus) because their ages don't match, Lucius is several years older than James. So they decided on Jegulus!

the thing is James is less lenient about the dark arts than Harry. I believe Harry could turn dark and there's drarry fics that explore this side of him and IT WORKS but James has too much black-and-white morals and he would rather date the giant squid than let regulus near him.

this makes the most sense to me. i think they just wanted their own gryffindor x slytherin token mlm ship like how the golden era has drarry. and i used to think the boom of the enemies to lovers appeal gave it motion too, but the jegulus stuff i see nowadays is so grossly fluffy it makes me question what the point of it was.

even the drarry dynamic rarely works because harry (despite me agreeing with how he’s more flexible with the dark arts due to the horcrux in him) is fiercely loyal to the friends that are actively prejudiced against the dark system. but take his support system away i could potentiallyyyyy see it.

but jegulus? nah.

"you only live twice" by drift99 is also really good, it's wolfstar, jily (jegulily later on ehehe), polyamory time travel bullshit (literally my favourite kind of bullshit). remus and hermione saving the world, underrated friendship tbh [completed, 47 chapters, 95k words]

"anti-hero" by rweoutofthewoods has jegulus, wolfstar, bamf regulus, moonwater friendship!!! regulus fakes his death, but remus finds him. platonic soulmates istg. also has marylily but it doesn't end well for them :((… [completed, 41 chapters, 237k words]

"dear your holiness" by mollymarymarie is basically, at it's barest bones, a wolfstar fleabag au. priest remus lupin, modern au, sorta-partly-kinda texting fic, very very sacrilegious, and a happy ending! [completed, 12 chapters, 142k words]

"saccharine" by moonymoment is a sweet little (maybe not little, but shorter than my usual 100k+ word fics) wolfstar modern ghost au! background jily, happy ending, basically sirius is a ghost that haunts remus' apartment and its really domestic

I LOVE ANTI HERO SO SO MUCH DUDE like I remember reading it last year and not putting my phone down until it was done, it's a PROBLEM. Whenever I think about reg lives I think about that even when I've read so many others with the concept it's just so...AAAAA. The desert scene of forever stuck in my mind for some reason idk 😭

I personally will probably not read the others (the people who know my blog could smell this coming, I see you) because wolfstar and jily aren't really my thing anymore (I dealt with a few elitist/aggressive fans over the years which has unfortunately just completely put me off being able to enjoy any content for them anymore :( still makes me sad icl) but!! Not really an anti thing per se, but something I feel the need to vent about:

One of the reasons I feel so conflicted on the Harry Potter thing is not only my concerns about continuing to give Rowling a platform, but also just, unpopular opinion, I… kinda think the fandom can be almost as performative as the haters?

I KNOW HOW THAT SOUNDS BUT HEAR ME OUT!

First off: they’re always going on about how "oh, we’re making ALL the hp characters trans to piss off the TERF!" and then you look at the fics and art and stuff and it’s like, at least 80-90% is just the same cookie cutter "Draco and Harry are gay trans men who make out 24/7 and there's some trans gay WolfStar in the background too, I guess, and also maybe black trans Hermione can have a cameo at some point as a treat, but who cares because it’s Drarryin' Time! *proceeds to Drarry all over AO3*" fics.

Like… why is it that after Rowling announced her status as a card-carrying fascist, "all the hp characters" suddenly became just Harry, Draco, Remus, Sirius and maybe Hermione if you're lucky? ESPECIALLY considering the fact that I know from experience that the fandom used to have way more diversity headcanons than this?

What about Ron "angsty because his mom wanted a daughter" Weasley? Or Neville and Hannah, who never had children (clearly, one of them is trans! Or maybe both are trans AND ace! Two groups Rowling hates for the price of one!)? Where are the Trans Dean/Seamus and Trans Lavender/Parvati fics? Trans Luna??? One of Bill and Fleur's kids being the first known male Veela hybrid in the series (literally a fuckin' goldmine of gender possibilities)???? What about fuckin' Nymphadora "gender nonconforming shapeshifter who hates her traditionally feminine name" Tonks (if ANY character would’ve been made trans or enby to spite Rowling, I’d have thought Tonks and her son Teddy would be the FIRST choices)???? EBONY DEMENTIA DARKNESS RAVEN WAY (objectively the BEST Harry Potter character)??!!!????

Part of me suspects that this is at least partly because these characters aren’t "popular" and therefore won't get the same attention as the Drarry "rivals to lovers" vibe and the All The Young Dudes spin-offs, but I can’t be fully sure of that.

And like… a lot of times it looks like their activism just, begins and ends with fandom activity? A lot of the same questions levied at HP haters ("are you supporting and/or donating to pro-trans causes?" "Are you making an effort to understand WHY TERF ideology is bad?" etc., all 100% valid questions) can also be levied against fans who make their headcanons and shipping the main source of their activism.

I’m not saying that NO hp fans are doing actual activism, I’ve seen a few examples, but it feels to me at least like the majority are not. It just seems they think shipping Harry and Draco whilst transing them to pretend it makes the TERF seethe (when really she probably doesn’t even know your fanfic exists) is a substitute for activism, just as HP haters think hating the series and patting themselves on the back for not reading it when they were twelve is a substitute for activism.

I guess the bright side is that at least the Drarry shippers aren’t harassing people? There are testimonies from trans people about hp fans harassing them, but the majority of those fans obviously wouldn’t also be writing trans Drarry fics so ehh?

Idk, like I said I’m conflicted and I need to vent. I’ve been holding this vent in for a while now.

I guess my thesis statement here is: HP fandom, if y'all really want to "diversify Harry Potter to spite the TERF", then please for the love of Glaux ADD MORE CHARACTERS AND IDENTITIES TO YOUR HEADCANON ROSTER.

okay I'll bitte. I'm still very new here and only ever read anything ab wolfstar. What is the lore w jegulus? I know it's a lot to explain probably but what would be the summary of what you find most alluring and fitting about them together?

i hope you are sitting down for this because this will be long. i will put it in bullet forms so its kinda organized

first, i am a sucker for slytherin/gryffindor ships. idk if its because of drarry or just the natural rivalry that the two houses has shown in the books. i see rivalries to lovers and i go crazy

second, i love the best friend’s sibling trope. i loved it with hinny and so naturally i loved it with jegulus. idk what it is about this trope that i love it so much, i just love the familiarity of it like, i watched you grew up because your older sibling is my best friend so you’ve always been part of my life and now that im getting to know you you arent just my best friend’s sibling you are your own person and wow im in love with you its just chef’s kiss you know?

i love how opposite jegulus are, i love the popular jock vs mysterious jock, i love the loud and reckless vs the quiet and calculating , i love the hero vs the anti-hero. i love how the things that make them who they are is exactly what the other needs, they complete and compliment each other so well that they are the couple who says they are a team and they actually are because of how well the fit.

(in relation to the previous bullet) i love how thru regulus james learns to love the silence, he learns the peacefulness of just being together, of holding each other in comfortable silence and being able to exist together, he always felt the need to be the life of the party or be the energized one who is entertaining everyone but with reg he gets to just exist no demands for anything other than just his presence

and with reg he learns to james that not everything has to be buried and hidden, he learns that his feelings and emotions are not wrong and bad, they are just emotions and james has given him the space to feel that, to exist with it and not oush it down. with james reg is able to see beyond what is offered to him, outside of his parent’s expectations, outside of his own expectations for himself, he gets to be a teenager, gets to be a teenager in love, he gets to know who he wanted to be and he learns to love it, he learns that there is more to life than just surviving

james loves regulus in the way regulus has never known, james values him and his thoughts, listens and remembers, he sees past his sarcastic remarks and eye rolls, he loves him for it even, he cares not because he has to but because he wants to and regulus never had that.

regulus loves james in the way james had never expected, james grew up with so much love that he had too much of it, he doesnt complain tho, so james thought he knew what love is but regulus’ way of loving is so different that it shocked. his love for james is subtle, its a small secret smile directed at him from across the room, its a pinky reaching out to him when they pass by each other, its sending little things that james had said he likes being given to him with nonchalance, its kissing him with reverence and worship, its folding into his arms and openly admiting he felt safe and at peace, its little things makes james blush and stutter because for him love is big gestures and loud declarations he never knew love could be solemn, love could be something they kept to themselves, love that he wanted only for his eyes.

jegulus just having a love that is unexpected and real at such a young age that it becomes something they hold on for the rest of their lives (no matter how short it is lol)

and this relates sooo much to hp fandom. i love drarry and wolfstar but sometimes the things i see about reg is just kinda… that. we are talking about his door sign (bc ofc we read this glimpse in the book) and his story is very good indeed since he’s like an anti-hero but idk if it’s bc the original writing but we don’t talk much about the female characters that much. like i’ve never seen bunch of fics that detail hermione dealing with her parents after the war, how they could have felt betrayed that she made then forget their whole lives. i read one hermione/millicent fic that talks abt it but nothing… deeper. we don’t see much abt pansy potentially breaking down after trying to give harry to voldemort. my point is we never explore much of these characters. i’ve never seen fic festivals abt them. it’s all about the men in the universe and don’t get me wrong i love them but i wish we’d put more effort in writing wlw media and that we could discuss a female character’s little things or traumas.

i’m sending this to you bc i love your blog and i’m looking for more sapphic content! and i’m begging other ppl in hp fandom to reflect on it. anyway if you have any blog or fic recs that really focus on the female characters, i’d like to know! sorry if there’s any mistake, english isn’t my first language

I think this is a really nuanced topic and yes there is truth in the message of the post and what you’re saying but it’s also not the whole picture if that makes sense? It would require like an essay on fandom, gender and sexuality to explore M/M vs F/F topic (and there are many great ones!).

I want to approach it from a different angle with my reply, that they do exist. Pandora, Mary, Dorcas and Marlene are also only named in canon but have a big fanon presence. There are people who write and engage with female characters to that depth and with so much passion.

They’re not as visible, I agree, but it’s a self-perpetuating issue. They also feel alone in creating their works even though there are multiple, several posts like this. I’m gonna tag some accounts to check out down below, please use them as a jumping point to connect with creatives!

➺ I'm anti Jegulus. Do I like Regulus? eh, it depends. Do I like James? Of course! 100% but do I like them together? ab-so-lute-ly not, hard pass. This ship is the one ship I can't ever get behind (but if I see some really good fanart of them and I really like it, you best believe I’m going to heart it or at least comment on it because, while I don’t ship it and never will, you, my brilliant, beautiful artist, did a fantastic job, and I hope to see more of your work.)

➺ While I love James Potter, I do in fact believe he was a bully because he was (as was Sirius). You will not and cannot change my mind on this. He was not all sunshine and rainbows and perfect. He was an annoying teenage boy who did annoying teenage boy things. He’s human, he’s imperfect, and he has flaws. Let them show and free my boy from the shackles of Fanon.

6. Which ship fans are the most annoying?

Oh god, so many. The first ones that come to mind are jegulus and dramione shippers. Obviously not all of them but the amount of times I see these shippers just show up and bring up their ship when the topic isn’t even related to said ship is insane. I once saw someone make this drarry edit on tiktok and so many of the comments were just “dramione is better!!!” “Ew this is toxic”. Which is incredible ironic.

7. What character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because of how the fandom acts about them?

Probably Remus and Hermione. I never really liked hermione in the first place but seeing the fandom treat her like she’s perfect and can do no wrong really aggravates me. And remus well….he is suffering from the ocification like the rest of the marauders characters. And the oc they’re making remus into is just incredibly boring and stereotypical yet they’re claiming he’s dimensional.

10. Worst part of fanon

Can I just say everything that came from marauderstok and marauders twitter? Because it’s all of that. The main one that stands out is Remus being the “Casanova of gryffindor tower”. This hc is so fucking stupid because it was literally a line that was said sarcastically yet people took it incredibly literal. Remus is a LOSER, I can guarantee he was not pulling everyone. I also don’t like the bimbofication, babygirlification, and teenager girlification of sirius but idk if that counts as fanon because it’s actually incredibly niche but the fans seem to think it’s a fact. But anyways, it makes sirius incredibly ooc and downright obnoxious.

16. You can’t understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc.)

Oh maybe this would be a better place to talk about what the marauders fandom is doing to sirius, but I already kinda talked about that (although I’m always up for complaining about it) so I’ll move on to something else. I don’t understand why Hermione is the fandom bicycle? Maybe it’s just because I don’t like her but she quite literally doesn’t mesh well with a majority of the characters she’s paired with. It feels like people are just using her as a self-insert. And it also would make more sense for Harry to be the bicycle but the people who like the Hermione bicycle thing just seem to want everything to be het. Which like, fine, but just write ‘x reader’ fics.

I actually don’t know? Maybe any snape discourse? I feel like that causes the most arguments and it can get kinda ugly because no one is listening to each other, they’re just calling the other side horrible people. This is coming from a snape anti/sometimes tolerater.

It's funny, some of those WIPs are beyond deceased at this point 🥲. I reckon I start a new one every 2 weeks on average.

Pinocchio [not dead!]: this is a tomdraco, dracomort (and possibly tomcest) fic that I'm working on atm. Set in a Voldemort Wins AU several years post-canon with a Death Eater!Draco and a Horcrux!Tom.

Duty [to write]: arranged marriage tomdraco AU fic. Well, arranged marriage for Draco, marriage of convenience for Tom.

Anti Down and Out [debating finishing]: this was honestly just me scribbling a bit to express my doubt about the common drarry trope of Draco losing it all and becoming destitute and hated. I've read some excellent fics with this trope, but I am cynical about how the 'punishment' of the Malfoys would play out in reality. Rich people fail upward and have safety nets larger than anything us peasants can comprehend.

hi ollie. so I read both jily and jegulus (rare I know) and also a lot of other ships like drarry, wolfstar, dramione, etc (I just like fanfic okay lol). today the jily fandom went off on dark!james fics, with several jily writers basically saying that fics with death eater james / love stories involving death eater characters are “nazi romance” and their supporters are “nazi sympathizers” and “fascists” in the fic community. It has been jarring to watch as I (and am sure most others) are not those things irl and now idk how to interact with fandom in general because of how intense it is. you are my fave jegulus writer so i wanted to ask if you have any thoughts/advice on all of this??

So, this ask is the first I’m reading about the discourse that happened, not only because I don’t follow many jily accounts (just because they’re not really my ship), but also because I was offline the majority of the day at a family function.

I tried to do some digging on the jily accounts I do follow. Firstly, I am not POC, nor am I Jewish. I am a privileged white kid from the middle of the USA. I have internalized racism. I try really hard to learn and grow as much as I can to be an anti-racist, but at the end of the day I have never experienced racism directed at me. I’m saying this because I don’t want anyone to be confused, I am not the authority on this. My opinion doesn’t really matter, if a person of color tells you that what you’re doing is racist and wrong, then it is. Period.

I’ll be honest I’m pretty exhausted, so maybe I’m not comprehending correctly, but, from what I understand, the problem with the majority of dark!James fics (or at least the ones being talked about) is that he’s being portrayed as (forgive me for lack of pretty words here) hotter or sexier when he is equivalent to a nazi. That somehow, him being part of the Death Eaters is hot because he’s a good guy gone bad. That makes sense to me. Being a Nazi is not something that should make someone hot, right? I get the trope that the “bad guy” in a story is hot. I like that trope. But you can make someone a bad guy without making them a Nazi, right? You can make someone the hot sexy villain without making them a fascist. Right? I think that’s what I’m understanding from all of this, and if I’m wrong please correct me because I want to learn.

So… Does that mean we can have dark!James or Death Eater James fics?

I think it depends on how it’s written, right? And again, correct me if I’m wrong but, if James is becoming a DE to save people he loves maybe it’s alright? As long as when you’re writing it it’s very clear that this is a bad decision, something morally wrong and not sexy. You’re not making him a DE to make him hot. You’re having him choose that side to infiltrate, to help people. He’s making a morally bad decision to keep someone he loves safe. I feel like that would be okay? But again, I am not part of a marginalized community. So I could be completely misinterpreting the few posts I was able to find and read.

And I’ve posted before that it’s okay to like morally grey characters and dark characters, because it is and you don’t need a reason for liking them. But you also need to understand the implications that fics have on real life and how your internalized racism and anti semitisim may affect how you view the fic. I don’t know if I’m making any sense here at this point but basically what I’m trying to say is: I think you can enjoy media but you also need to be conscious about how it may effect your prejudices and work on understanding where those prejudices come from and make changes in your life to be a better person.

And you guys know I’m very much of the mindset of “don’t like it don’t read it” but there are some cases where content is harmful to a community, wether it be the jewish community, the trans community, the nomad community, etc. And we all need to be aware of that, and if people from those communities are saying it’s wrong and giving us explanations of why, then we need to listen to them.

I’ll try to find more of the posts tomorrow and read up on this subject more and add to this post if I think it’s necessary. <3

Hi anon! First of all I’m sorry you’ve been feeling like this, it breaks my heart to see anyone being guilt tripped into liking something popular just because everyone else does. I’ve mentioned a few times that I’m wary about reccing (what people consider) classics exactly because of that. Of course they’re brilliant and popular for a reason - especially the ones that introduced innovative concepts or headcanons we all love and share today. I love many of those fics but others are definitely a pass for me, and the idea of being required to read and enjoy them to be considered a valid shipper (??) drives me up the wall. I’m happy you felt that my blog was safe and welcoming enough to share this with me without fearing judgment, anon 💜

What you’re feeling right now sucks big time and I assume pretty much everyone has gone/is going through the same dilemma being in a huge, long-standing fandom like Drarry. The amount of available works is insane, there’s no time to check everything that’s going on at once, and I’ve seen a few “gatekeepers” around - whether or not intentionally - putting a lot of extra pressure onto newcomers, casual fans and even old shippers like myself, to read this and that.

It’s completely normal that not every story will would spark something in you. Fic reading is an extremely personal experience and everyone has their preferences, hard nos, squicks and whatnot. It’s virtually impossible to have one single fic catering to every single shipper’s needs, and I doubt that any author has that intention anyway. The heartkick factor is so subjective sometimes you read two similar fics exploring the very same trope, and one works for you while the other doesn’t 🤷🏻‍♀️ imo trying to rationalize and justify reading preferences only leads to frustration, I prefer to accept that my heart wants what it wants, and there’s that!

I’ve mentioned before that Lettered is my fave Drarry author, yes? I wonder how many people will be surprised to learn that some of her fics didn’t work for me at all, I either never finished or never revisited them. Similarly, GallaPlacidia is largerly adored and read - I do love some of her fics but others are just not my jam, mostly because I have no interest in a few tropes. No I haven’t checked every fic Saras_Girl has ever published, and I’ve never read Turn, her most popular one but not a personal fave, more than twice. And it’s okay. It’s all good. Even if they knew I existed, I doubt that Lettered, Galla and Saras_Girl would care as much about it as some readers do lmao truth is, this is a space I come exclusively for fun, and we don’t owe anyone anything. Readers are free to choose and read and enjoy whatever they want, the same way authors are free to write whatever they want.

(Which is why I will never understand anti comments - no one is forcing you to read shit so is there any reason why you cannot close the tab, block the tags and move on? Must you really leave unsolicited criticism after literally wasting your time reading something you didn’t enjoy?! Makes absolutely no sense to me)

If I were to stress over how much I haven’t read or enjoyed I probably wouldn’t have created a recs blog in the first place. I admit sometimes I do feel pressured about not being as up to date and knowledgeable about the fandom as I’d like to - then I remember I’m here to have fun in my very limited free time, and my only rule should be to please me, myself and I. If I’m not having fun or feeling invested in the read, you can bet I’m gonna peace out and focus on something that hits that special spot. There’s nothing more valuable than learning how to curate your experience, and knowing you’re not a lesser fan because of that is an important step, too.

Yeah sadly I do know about this. Some people I've talked to in the past got randomly added to anti group chats just to get yelled at and made fun off. They claim to hate us being around but use us for hit tweets, always talk about, always try to debunk larry, and have a whole existence that involves us. The way know "ship" group or fandom gets at as much hate as us is crazy. I've NEVER seen any fandom go through what we go through.
