#if the costume design is simple that’s fine

I can go on and explain how much I love DOFP Logan for the simple fact that I loved the 70s style they put him in. Like the printed shirt, the shades, the belt, the leather jacket, down to the fit of his jeans. Whoever was the costume designer for this movie deserves an award cause he was serving retro daddy realness and I fucking love him for it. He had no business looking so fine in this movie, from beginning to end. Pre-time jump with the gray streaks, during the time jump that’s basically prime bop Logan, and post-time jump where he comes back to normal. I love him so bad. I don’t even know how he managed to fit his body into that tight ass leather jacket but I thank whoever’s idea it was to do that. 🙂‍↕️🙌

Only ppl unaware of how much of a boring chore it is to draw clothing and all assorted folds would think that there are only sexual reasons for drawing naked people 🤷🏻‍♀️

For anyone else who has been capital O obsessive over Wednesday's prom dress it's Alaia's 2020 fall ready-to-wear collection specifically look 8. If you were wondering.
#I have psychological problems#I have spent far too long trawling the Internet not only for this dress but what fucking fabric they use#Costume brain rot really came out to play#It's 2am and everything hurts I have been sitting in the same position for multiple hours#At first it was fine bc I was just screenshotting the show but then I googled it and found an interview w the designer#Who said it was alaia. So then I went to their site and found fuck all. So then I went to vogue. Had to make a vogue account.#Went through multiple collections (did not go in a logical order). Finally found The Dress. Set about finding fabric.#First I was like okay black sheer lightweight w a good shine to it. Found that. Let's find a brown underplayed or smthn bc it's kinda brown#Found that. Looked at the photos again and it's kind of two tone black and brown. Spend at least an hour looking for this through many etsy#Shops dodgy retailers and the most expensive fabric you will ever see. Only to look back and realise it has a slight pattern to it.#Give up and go to bed.#All this bc I wanted to make what is really quite a fuckin simple dress#I'm p sure now that I actually read things that it's an in house fabric and THAT makes me wanna murder#And SURE I could just make it in black but I'm a bit obsessed over the brown#And NOW I can't do the underlayer plan either bc then it's just too much yknow?#Idk idk it's my specific brand of mental illness coming out to play#So I thought I'd share my findings w the world you are welcome i am so tired goodnight.

minors dni. minho x fem!reader. hands on necks (not exactly choking but choking adjacent). dirty talk. slightly rough piv. soft!dom minho.
It's not what you expect, the first time someone reaches out to wrap their fingers around your throat. It's during a lesson in self-defence, part of a compulsory skill. You flinch away as their fingertips graze your skin, scrunching your shoulders at the unnatural feeling. It's not a neutral act, a simple experience of skin on skin.
There's something deep down, an instinct designed to make the feeling of another person's hands around your neck inherently discomforting.
It takes many attempts for you to build a tolerance to it, the anxious feeling never settling completely despite your ability to hold still.
It was hard to imagine how the act could ever elicit anything other than that deep, instinctual urge to squirm away.
Until him.
His fingers flex as he tugs the black glove down his wrist a little further. It's a vital part of his costume as far as your concerned, a last minute addition ties up his all-black theme perfectly.
"Are you having fun?" you question, back pressed against a wall in a dark corner of the room.
The New Year was around the corner, the costume party in full swing around you. It'd taken a doe eyed look and a soft kiss to his neck to convince your boyfriend to join you.
He offers you a small lopsided smile, the delicate lip ring balanced prettily on his lower lip. "Mm," he hums with a small nod.
You tug him a little closer, "You sure? I know it's a little more crowded than I—"
"I'm fine," he says, the bare fingers of his glove free hand stroking gently over your wrist. "I'm all good."
If you were being totally honest with yourself, a (not so small) part of you hope he'd ask to leave. Getting him dressed up like this was the best part of the entire night, you'd decided. Now, you'd very much rather be at home taking the costume off him than stand around in a crowd of drunk partygoers.
The lip ring presses into his plush lip a little as he nibbles at it for a moment. You could leave the accessories on him. The ring, the silver necklace hanging around his collar—just long enough to tickle your chin if he was above you... and then there was the glove. Your eyes drop involuntarily to the hand in question.
"What about you?" Minho asks, tugging your eyes back to his.
"Hm?"
"Having fun?"
You blink.
He smiles, keenly aware of your propensity to drift elsewhere. "What you thinking about?" he asks. You would have answered him. You were too far into your relationship to be timid about such things. But then... then he reaches up with that hand... the dark, smooth fabric cool against your skin as he tilts your chin up a little. "Talk to me," he encourages gently.
Oh, he knows. Of course, he knows.
"Do you like my costume?"
His eyes drop down your body quickly. "Mm," he hums. "Very pretty."
"I like yours too."
He fails to suppress an amused, knowing smile. "Yeah?" His hand drifts from your chin along your jaw, coming to rest just below your ear. It allows his gloved thumb to play with your lobe a little as he steps into you a little more. "What do you like about it?"
"Fishing for compliments?"
"You seem desperate to offer them."
You frown, "No."
"No?" he questions, stepping even closer. He's pressed against you now, warm and dark—a barrier between you and the rest of the room. "My sweet girl wouldn't lie to me." He leans over you, lips brushing your jawline. "Would she?" he adds with a whisper. His breath tickles, hot against your sensitive neck.
You realise your error then. It was too late. The time had passed for you to drag him home and tear the dark clothes from him in the privacy of your shared apartment.
It was happening here.
Your eyes flick quickly across the room before you're grabbing his wrist and tugging him along with you, dodging drunk friends and acquaintances as you beeline for the hallway door.
Minho chuckles behind you, letting you tug him along without resistance.
You'd let you of tomorrow contemplate the decisions you make next. When you find each room taken, occupied by a couple or a group of intoxicated friends, you tug open the laundry door and slam it behind you both. There's a small lock on the door handle. You twist it.
"You like it that much, then?" Minho says from behind you.
He's leaning against the washing machine when you turn, arms crossed—sleeves rolled to his elbows.
You take in a few shallow breaths before he's stepping towards you and lifting you off your feet. It shouldn't be as easy as it is for him to lift you on top of the dryer. He settles between your legs, hands gliding up and down your thighs a few times.
His dark hair has loosened a little over the evening, the hairspray you'd used to keep it in place off his forehead giving into the humidity and copious tousles by distracted fingers. There's a lock hanging just over one of his eyes.
You reach up to brush it aside delicately.
"I lied," Minho whispers, seemingly prompted out of silence by your action. "When I said it's pretty..." he thumbs at the hem of your dress where he's slipped it up your thigh. "...I lied." His fingers brush your skin on one thigh, the fabric of his glove is cold against the other. "Pretty isn't right," he continues. "It makes me want to hold you down... sink into you..." His gloved hand snakes up your side slowly, coming to rest at the base of your neck. His fingers are splayed out across your collarbones, just below the point that would normally make you itch to squirm away.
"Min?"
His eyes flick up from your neck. His fingers twitch against you. "Mm," he hums. It's a sweet sound, in total contrast to the way he looks at you. Like he wants to tear you apart. You find you like the idea. You also find... that you wish his fingers would inch up just a little.
It's not a thought you dwell on. Instead you reach up slowly, like he might spook, and wrap your fingers around his wrist.. then slowly... gently... you guide his hand up to your throat. His eyes stay fixed on yours; his fingers ghost light on your skin.
"Don't look at me like that," he says as your fingers squeeze his wrist. "All fucking sweet like you don't want me to—"
"Please," you interrupt.
He leans forward with a groan, lips pressing to the side of your neck. He squeezes slightly at the movement. It's enough to have you dropping your head back.
It's different. It's so different to how it'd been with a stranger, with someone other than him. This makes you want to crawl under his skin, beg him to hold you and consume you—to take you. His. His. His.
"Minho," you gasp as his lips part and suck at your neck, his wet tongue poking out to lave at the marks he leaves as he goes.
His hand stays at your neck as he works, a comforting and steady pressure. He's got you, it says.
A tiny clink breaks you from your trance. His lip ring is gone when he pulls back, fallen into the dark and bouncing off things around you as it goes. You could not care less. You tug him back towards you, hands at the back of his neck to guide him. His lips are wet and hot against yours, moving with a laziness that did not at all align with upbeat music and countdown starting outside.
His tongue slips out to meet yours, his body falling over you a little in a desperate attempt to get closer. 8...7...6... the partygoers chant. Your fingers grasp at his hair, tugging a little. He whines. 3...2... You could be anywhere... you ponder as the cheers start and the new year begins. You could be anywhere and anytime, and all that would matter would be whether he was there with you.
His breath comes out in deep gasps when you finally part. It's a brief reprieve. He's on you in the next second, tugging your hips towards his and burying himself inside you. It's your turn to attach yourself to his neck, kissing and biting your way through his sharp drives into you. The dryer bangs against the wall behind you with each one.
"This what you wanted?" he gasps as you fall back on your hands. His hands grasp your hips. One warm. One cold. "Hm?"
His lips glisten with spit, a mixture of each of you. You're about to reach towards him again, desperate to taste him, when he releases one hand from your hip.
It's the bare hand this time, that wraps around your neck. It's worse—better. His fingers twitch each time he pumps into you. Your pulse flutters against them. You can feel it.
Then he pauses, tugs you flush against him—buried deep. "My sweet girl," he says. He presses his fingers into your skin at each side of your neck. It doesn't cut off your breath, instead, your cunt clenches around him—your high taking you off guard. It's a rush, a heaviness in your head that seems to match perfectly with the heavy, fullness of his cock buried deep.
There's something deep down, an instinct designed to make the feeling of another person's hands around your neck inherently discomforting. And then... there's this.

Just curious, opinions on the different nutcrackers that you know of from all kinds of media and stuff?
Sorry if anyone asked this before I wouldn't know
Love your art and characters by the way keep it up!
Hohohohohohohoho, we be opening the Pandora Box here. Not that I'm complaining~
So, this is going to be a very long post as I've seen a lot of the movies. I also have a couple books which I can give my opinion, and I'm familiar with various apparitions in videogames and such. So yeah this is going to be a loooooooong post.
So buckle up, grab a drink and enjoy the ride into my personal madness o7
Tumblr media
[ CAREFUL, VERY LONG POST UNDER THE CUT ]
So, let's start with movies as those are easier to grab and talk about for me. I'm gonna go with their year of release ot keep things organized.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Shchelkunchik (1973)
Tumblr media
Small silly dramatic guy, I like him! The animators did a great job animating his design and make him incredibly appealing. As for his human appearance, eeeeeh I don't really care for him. Definitely a shock the first time you see it lol But yes, adorable silly guy
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Nutcracker Fantasy (1979)
Tumblr media
Li'l guy. It is Sanrio so it's bound to be on the cute side. The Nutcracker itself doesn't do much in the movie, but as for Fritz himself, I... honestly don't care about him. He looks pretty, but personality wise he needs to work on it pff Idk he just comes out as plain and a little arrogant... Still a fine fellow, though.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Nutcracker: The Motion Picture (1986)
Tumblr media
One of the two ballet-based movies I've seen, and definitely the better one of the two imo. And good lord I love this guy. He may look terrifying but good lord if he's silly. And I actually don't mind his human appearance as simple as it is. Silly man, this one.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The Nutcracker Prince (1990)
Tumblr media
HIM. MY BELOVED. THE GOOD LAD. Definitely my favorite, and not because this was my most beloved childhood movie. He is such a sweetheart with a hint of awkwardness but who can still kick your ass. And the final scene in the castle in the Italian dub is just *chef kiss* 10/10 lad.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The Nutcracker (1993)
Tumblr media
The other ballet-based movie... it's just Macaulay Culkin. And his nutcracker costume looks hideous lol. Nothign to say. Surprisingly, he's not the worst one.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The Nuttiest Nutcracker (1999)
Tumblr media
Ripoff Ken. He is incredibly dumb, and a tiny bit of a freak, but could be worse honestly kdjng They did Barbie before Barbie did it lol that's p much it.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Barbie in the Nutcracker (2001)
Tumblr media
THE OTHER GOOD LAD. I love Eric so much he's such a sweetheart wanting to fix his mistakes. It's so easy to root for him. As for his human appearance... he's just Ken skjngf 10/10 lad #2
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The Nutcracker and the MouseKing (2004)
Tumblr media
Oh boy what to say about this one. Very hateful in the first half. At least he learns and becomes bearable at the last third of the movie. But I do like the nutcracker form, they made the blocky design work as well, like later on it's actually very nice to see him move. Still, horrible personality. Needs a slap in the face.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Nutcracker in 3D / Nutcracker: The Untold Story (2010)
Tumblr media
Hellspawn. Nightmare fuel. Abomination. Who the hell approved to that design?? And why did they pitch up his voice like that?? At least the kid playing human NC is not as bad, but good lord. 0/10 Just burn that puppet with fire, please.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (2018)
Tumblr media
This one just pisses me off. This one had so much potential, and the actor is actually good. It's just the way his character was written that is dog awful. They made him basically a dumb side character who barely does anything despite everyone in the movie treating him like he's a big shot. And the the fact that this was made by Disney just makes this worse. Just so much lost potential.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The Nutcracker (???)
Tumblr media
I actually don't know who made this movie or in which year, but I do like this one. The movie is comedic so he's a bit silly, but he's still quite enjoyable. And for some reason he reminds me of Waluigi.... Still, silly guy.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
That's all for the movies. There are a bunch more that I've missed or that I can't find anymore so my list of opinions on them is not complete. But one day...
---
As for other medias, hm... I have a couple books that are just the original story by Hoffman and the retell by Duman (of which I don't have much to say) and the graphic novel by Natalie Andrewson.
Tumblr media
He's just a li'l guy, silly kid but enjoyable.
---
Lastly, while there are no actual nutcracker based games, I do want to mention a few skins and characters I am aware of for the hell of it. I'm pretty sure I will be forgetting some but eh.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Terraria
Tumblr media
Silly guy that speeeens. I wish I didn't have to kill them skgjfn.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Overwatch
Tumblr media
As much as I now despise Overwatch for many reasons, I still love Zenyatta's nutcracker skin to death. Look at this silly guy. Definitely my favorite skin in the game.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Saints Row IV
Tumblr media
SR4 had a Christmas themed DLC, and among all the xmas reskins of the enemies, one was the terminator-like enemies being turned into Nutcrackers. And their design look so sick.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Fortnite
Tumblr media
I don't play Fortnite, but I do have to admit that the nutcracker guy looks neat. The crazy look fits the look quite well. If I would ever get in there (I doubt it but still), that would definitely be the skin I would use.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Lethal Company
Tumblr media
I don't play LC neither but I've seen videos of the nutcracker enemy in action, and yeah he looks silly. I love how he moves around.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
That's all of the apparitions that I can think of. I'm also aware of the point-and-click game made by Big Fish Games, but I have not played it myself. I really should do that one day...
---
Aaaaaand that's a wrap. I'm definitely forgetting a nutboi or two somewhere but these are all the ones I can think of at the top of my head that are officially published and all.
If we start talking about folks in social medias I've come to know over the years... I'm gonna be here for 3 months trying to talk about them dkjfgn
Well, hope you enjoyed this personal spiraling into nut madness :V

What’s your favourite mlp species? Have you got any thoughts on kirins/niriks?
Request ponies, species, etc I havent done here
I am both a creature and character designer, so I have a lot of thoughts about MLP world!
Paradoxically, the non-pony species interest me less than the actual ponies, because they are all really solid and well done designs. There's not a lot I would reinterpret tbh, and drawing them would just be taking what they have and making them realistic.
The non-pony creatures tend to be more detailed because they are generally cameos and don't need to be animated doing nearly as much as ponies do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Compilations by AndoAnimalia on deviantart
Tumblr media
The kirins are really lovely designs! I love the ankle tufts, and how the stripes on the horns glow when using magic. Really nice creature design here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Nirik part was a little boring, and the plot/conflict was not sophisticated enough for my tastes. But it is a show for young children, not biology majors. Lots of room for worldbuilding and headcannoning lore to flesh it out, but I prefer something I can completely rewrite. The kirin lore was fine and I'm fine leaving it as-is.
Another good one is breezies.
Tumblr media
I love them they look so stupid. Their wings are over the top but perfectly designed to sell the "piece of lint in the wind" delicateness they have.
as for my favorite creature?
Tumblr media
Bug momma
I really love changelings and love how edgy they are.
Tumblr media
The reformed changelings are decent but I would have designed them differently. I may take a crack at them later on if I feel the need. I feel like they should either be pony-adjacent (with manes at the very least) or further removed from ponies. this middle ground is kind of like having a bug monster alien that just happens to be bipedal, with humanoid shoulders, arms, and hands for no evolutionary reason (the reason is practical effects and putting a dude in a costume but shhh)
all this is about creatures though, and its very important to talk about character design whenever we discuss creatures. A character's personality should be the quickest read about them, rather than their biology. If something is too complex, the personality gets lost because you have to spend your details adding ankle tufts and articulated fingers.
Tumblr media
The mane six, and basically all other ponies, use the same base puppet, and each unique part needs its own turnaround. Every prop and hairdo and eye shape needs to be understood from every possible angle because these are main characters and they need to be be able to turn, spin, and do karate without the animators having to make up the back of applejack's hat every time she faces away from the camera.
Having the same body means animators know how to draw both rarity and rainbow dash from a back 3/4 view with one hoof raised. So from a technical standpoint, simple is best.
Even in big budget productions, where every character has a different body with different close and face shapes, main characters are simplified so that the audience can quickly read pose and expression without getting lost in complex clothing designs or face makeup. Reading poses and expressions quickly is very important to understand and empathize with the character before they've moved to the next pose. You need to understand the emotion the character is feeling and the action they are doing in a split second.
Tumblr media
you start to get more complicated and an entity becomes less of a character and more of scenery because it has so much detail its harder to read the emotions from one frame to the next.
Tumblr media
There's a reason he doesn't wear his funny hat for the duration of the movie! It's much easier to read his emotions without it. Adding lots of detail and weird props is something designers do a lot when introducing a character if they want to make that character feel mysterious or "other" because its harder to relate when your brain is stuck on the details. also masks just do that by nature of being masks.
where was I going with this
My little pony g4 has great creature and character design.
If it were high budget, major studio with All The Money, there might be more variety in character proportions, and more distinction between the different pony species. But its a puppet animated show that was always meant to make marketable designs to be turned into toys. We just get lucky when there's a good story to tell along the way

In your opinion, what makes a good spider-variant design? I'm trying to avoid the pitfall of "bunch of normal ass clothes over the suit" I typically see, but also struggling to come up with anything that's clearly a spider-man when you look at it and doesn't confuse with peter parker's spider-man
That's a good question! So good that I'm going to bust out the proper capitalization and everything.
I'll give you a freebie right off the bat, because this is probably going to be a long post: one easy way to distinguish your character from Peter Parker is to draw them with a different body type. That way, even if their costume was similar to Peter's, it would obviously not be him.
Now, before getting into what I think makes a good Spider-Man design, I feel obligated to speak on what makes a good superhero design. Namely: Keep it simple, stupid! The best superhero costumes are pretty easy to draw, probably because they were designed to be drawn a million times by a million different artists. These costumes are simple enough that they can reduced to bands of colour and stay recognizable.
Tumblr media
I promise that keeping your design simple will undoubtedly make it better-- or at least more superheroic, because this applies to Spider-Man, too!
Onto making a Spider-Man costume that is recognizably Spider-Man, but clearly not Peter Parker's. Obviously this costume is going to look different than Peter's classic costume, so we could start by figuring out what about that costume we can change. Thankfully, they already stripped Spider-Man down to the essentials in 1984.
Tumblr media
Mike Zeck's black costume identifies these necessary elements of Spider-Man's costume:
Those luchador eyes
The front and back spider emblem
Form-fitting tights
The rest of the costume (the segmented colours, the web pattern, etc.) are basically fine for you to ignore or change at your leisure. Okay, maybe not... you could just draw Green Lantern and put a spider on his chest and back, and that probably wouldn't make for a great Spider-Man. But it's a place to start, at least. As long as you're putting serious thought into this costume, though, you should be able to ignore pitfalls like that.
Hey, speaking of thought, I thought I should cover some of those extraneous details Ditko included in his iconic Spider-Man design! Namely the way he chose to segment the reds and blues, he actually put loads of thought into it:
Tumblr media
Namely, the high-rise gloves and boots help Peter's costume remain invisible beneath his civvies. I actually think these logistics are important to consider when designing a Spider-Man costume (or really any costume).
Anon mentions the "bunch of normal ass clothes over the suit" trend in spider-design in their ask, which I was happy to see because it means I can talk about something that really bugs me about recent Spider-Man stuff: How does Spider-Man stick to walls through regular shoes? No, seriously? Think about it for a second! When Miles wears Jordans over his Spider-Man costume and tries to stick his feet to a wall, wouldn't his feet just stick to his shoes instead?
Ditko rationalized this by deciding that Spider-Man can stick to walls through thin fabrics, but that rule has basically been forgotten. Despite how I sound, I'm mostly fine with this change (this is a textbook 'rule of cool' case), but these kinds of things are worth thinking about.
In that vein, keep in mind that Spider-Man's superpowers really lend themselves to acrobatics. Your spider-character probably shouldn't be wearing a suit of armour, or something that would greatly restrict their movement or sticking ability. That's why I labelled "Form-fitting tights" as a necessary characteristic of a Spider-Man costume earlier on in this post.
Before I wrap this up, one more thing you can try doing if you're stumped is looking at real life for inspiration. Whether that's going back to the old strongman outfits that gave way to the original superhero costumes, looking at modern day equivalent athletic wear, or even looking at actual fashion (as long as you're not just putting that fashion over the suit), there's bound to be something that could give you ideas.

Prompted by a fic I was reading: would Charles be likely to have learned Punjabi at home ? (As in, enough to actually be able to sustain a conversation in it, even a simple one, to say nothing of actual proficiency in the language)
My instinct is to say no for a couple of reasons
(Note: This is not to discourage people who want to write bilingual Charles! I just like thinking about people's relationship to languages and also it's relevant to my prep for my down on my knees series)
Rowland Sr. is a violent man who hit his son on the regular. Charles' dialogue implies that he did not hit his wife, but with a man like that the threat of it is never gone
Mrs. Rowland, per Charles, was "just quiet". This, plus the glimpse of her we have in the mirror and in Charles' trauma flashbacks implies a woman who likely survived in her house through self erasure and deference to her husband
Rowland Sr is explicitly likened to Devlin Sr, which suggests a controlling man who constantly found fault in Charles for varied and likely nonsensical reasons
All this leads me to think that for Charles to speak/understand Punjabi in canon would require his mother to be allowed to use Punjabi with him to a degree where he could have built actual fluency which to me seems... Unlikely to say the least.
First of all, like I said, Rowland Sr is a controlling asshole who wants to know everything going on in his house, which makes it unlikely that he would be fine with his wife and son having a "secret language" of their own, which means the first step to get bilingual Charles in canon would be to have bilingual Rowland Sr. Not impossible, but given the way people thought about language in the 60s/70s when he would have met his wife, unlikely imo.
Even IF Rowland Sr was somehow bilingual in Punjabi (which you could have if you wanted) I think it's important to remember that the way bilingualism is perceived right now on Tumblr is not necessarily universal. Assuming Charles spoke Punjabi at home, on top of all the assumptions above, also assumes:
His parents didn't subscribe to the wisdom of the time, which is still widespread, that hearing more than one language at home would impede the acquisition of speech for children
His parents felt that Punjabi would be important and/or useful and/or not an obstacle that he would have to overcome when trying to fit into British society at large. I don't know what would have been the consensus in the UK in the early 70s when Charles was born, but I can tell you that people of Charles' generation in France generally don't speak the immigrant parent's language because the attitude of the time was that to do so would be detrimental to the child (that said, the UK does integration differently so I could be missing something there)
There are other factors that can influence practice and understanding of a language: I imagine Charles' relationship with his mother would play a huge role there, as well as people's reactions to his usage of Punjabi outside the house (would he have people to practice with beyond his mother? If so, would he have wanted to?) and tbh you can probably make sense of a lot of permutations
But between the above and the fact that Charles' costume design makes no reference to his heritage that I could spot beyond the cricket bat* I think if Charles does learn Punjabi it's more likely to be a choice he makes as a teenager/after he dies than something he was taught at home
*He does have visible antiracist politics but those are not the same thing as a particular connection to India and Punjab, which I think would be a bit of a requisite for him to actively learn the language later on

Costume Break Down
aka more than you ever wanted to know about Thai dance costume details but I think they are gorgeous and require so much effort to create and wear that they are worth celebrating.
Tumblr media
Let's take a look at Khem's beautiful red costume.
Here the presence of the dagger and the colour choice quite firmly indicate that he is performing the role of the hero Prince Inao from the Lakhon Nai dance drama 'The Romance of Inao.'
His costume is based on the traditional costumes worn by heroes in both Khon and Lakhon Nai. There are some historical differences between the two types but they have very much influenced each other from the 19th Century onwards.
There are some elements of his costume that read as modern influences which I suspect are to reflect both current tastes and also the fact that the costume was intended to be seen on screen rather than a stage.
Tumblr media
Here we see Khem's ornate headdress, known as a chada, he has a flower garland on the right side of his crown, which is the side that male characters always wear these flower pendants with heroines displaying them on the left.(Historically Lakhon Nai was only performed by women and was only for the eyes of the royal court although rules did relax in the 19th Century.)
It's hard to see in these pictures but he would usually be wearing the ornate wing shaped ear kaffa as well, which sit around the ears.
We can also see his very fine inthorn-tanu, which are those high pointed shoulder pads, worn by male characters to exaggerate their body shape.
Tumblr media
We can see him wearing the ornate wide collar around his neck, known as a krong-kaw and a large pendant pinned to the end of the collar against his chest.
A body chain known as sangwan is then crossed around the pendant and is usually attached to an ornamental belt or just below it, at the front and back of the costume.
Khem's sangwan is a relatively simple looking version of what can be a very intricate piece of jewellery but I suspect it is because the camera will be getting a much closer look at him than an audience looking at a stage could do.
In general I think his costume is not quite as ornate and covered with detail as a stage costume often is but there is just enough there to show the luxurious nature of dance outfits without looking too much on screen.
The above picture also gives us a great look at both his hoy-na, a silk panel that hangs at the front of the costume, (here it is red and gold with gold fringe) and his hoy-kang, the silk panels that sit either side of the central hoy-na.
We also see one very modern addition - the shiny gold buttons!
Traditionally dancers are sewn into their costumes with no visible seams, a lengthy process which does run the risk of damaging the costumes every time they are stitched and unstitched.
I suspect that Apo is still partly sewn into this outfit but I imagine they wanted to give him a top that he could get in and out of more easily as he would need to be able to change constantly for filming.
I really like the design of the top, it gives both a hint of Western influence with the shape but also has a Chinese feel with the high collar and then those beautiful very Indian looking fabrics, which feels appropriate for the era and for Man Suang itself. We see it sits over the pha-nung and hoy-na etc which would not typically be the case and is why I suspect he is not also wearing a cloth belt under it as well (mentioned below.)
Tumblr media
The red tights are also a modern addition, usually we would see bare legs and feet but they do give a very theatrical look which feels fitting for Man Suang.
Tumblr media
From this angle we can see his pha-nung, which is a long rectangular cloth that is usually pre stitched and pleated and is wrapped around the waist and drawn through the legs to be tied in a knot at the back.
Underneath that he will be wearing a pair of sanab-plao, short trousers with deep embroidered hems that sit just below the knee.
He may also be wearing pha-pawk, which is a fabric that basically functions like hip pads to assist the pha-nung in exaggerating the body shape to create an image that mimics statues and murals depicting dancers.
Usually he would be wearing a radsa-aew, a cloth belt which is stitched into place and secures the pha-nung. I can't tell just by looking at this but I suspect he may not be given the way his clothes are lying.
We can see he is wearing a lovely cloak here that appears to be silk lined velvet.
Tumblr media
Here we can see his embroidered sleeves, these are usually sewn on to an undershirt which also has padding sewn into it to exaggerate the shape of their chests. The decorative outer shirt is then usually sewn onto that undershirt.
Now in this picture, we see the fancy sleeves taper off to a plain red fabric at the shoulders which could indicate the presence of an undershirt but there is that clip in the trailer where Khem tugs his costume open and we see his bare chest so I don't know whether he is or isn't. Perhaps it depends on the necessity for him to be able to strip in any given scene which is totally fine by me!
We can also see his decorative golden vambraces and he is likely also wearing beads or a bracelet of rings as well. Usually more is more when it comes to dance jewellery but once again, I think they have been more restrained here.
Rings worn on the fingers are common and of course, anklets are essential.
Tumblr media
At least they are to me ❤️

Okay so here are some more Disney Mirrorverse characters
Tumblr media
Anger they didn't really change at all. They just made him slightly volcanic. He also has a sword (not pictured here).
Tumblr media
Baloo basically looks like he walked out of a weird Furry version of Mad Max.
Tumblr media
Baymax looks weird, it looks like they tried to integrate his power armor into his design. Not really a fan.
Tumblr media
OH HI BEAST SOMEONE HAS BEEN TAKING LEVELS IN PALADIN HUH?
Tumblr media
I like how they didn't really change Buzz's design. They just gave him a bigger gun.
Tumblr media
Man if looks could kill Donald would already be in prison. I do like they made the effort to distinguish him from the KH version. The energy anchor is a nice touch too.
Tumblr media
OKAY WHY IS DORY EVEN FUCKING HERE? Spare her the horrors of war I implore you!
Tumblr media
I like this, its similar to her normal outfit, but clearly designed for combat with more maneuverability.
Tumblr media
THIS IS THE MONADO'S POWER! I mean, EVE already has combat abilities, does she really need the flipper swords?
Tumblr media
Again reminds me of Elsa's design. Its the same dress as the canon version, just designed for more maneuverability. And with big stupid WOW shoulderpads too. Also I guess she's just lobbing the poison apples at people now.
Tumblr media
Yeah, remember Frank Wolff? Dwayne the Rock Johnson's character from the hit Disney Movie Jungle Cruise? Yeah no I don't either. Look, the movie had came out, they needed to promote it. Have Dwayne The Rock Johnson with a Swamp Thing arm.
Tumblr media
This one is alright, feels like if they were making the edgy Pre MCU Frozone movie this is what he would look like.
Tumblr media
Alright real big fan of this one. This looks like the Genie like a thousand years post Aladdin where he's become a powerful Genie lord and rules over his own kingdom and stuff. Just love the design here.
Tumblr media
I like this. Pretty simplistic design.
Tumblr media
Not gonna lie I could imagine canon Hades wearing this.
Tumblr media
I think this is largely just a recolor of his canon costume. *checks* Not even a recolor, its basically just the same outfit.
Tumblr media
Honestly never even seen Onward so I could not comment. It looks fine though, he looks like a DnD character.
Tumblr media
So they took Judy Hopps and gave her a Zero Suit. I can dig it.
Tumblr media
Again, this is something I could see Maleficent wearing.
Tumblr media
So the question is how do they change up Maui for Mirrorverse? Answer, just make his tattoos glow. Its a cool effect to be sure.
Tumblr media
this one is pretty good. No complaints.
Tumblr media
I HAVE SEVERAL QUESTIONS. Why is Mike in power armor? Why is here here at all?
Tumblr media
Pretty cute design, but I get the feeling Minnie isn't fully aware she's about to be going to war.
Tumblr media
This is a nice design, its simple, and it builds subtly off Moana's normal look.
Tumblr media
Why are his hands glowing? What does that add?
Tumblr media
OH GOD THEY PUT OLAF IN A LITTLE CAPE I CAN'T. Why is he even here? Olaf cannot face the horrors of war. He looks so determined too like that face says "I'm about to kick some ass today!"
Tumblr media
Okay the jacket is a bit much, but I am kind of digging the roulette wheel shield and the dice flail.
Tumblr media
Again have note seen Raya, but this seems alright. Probably should make time for some of these newer Disney films, especially since I want to show support during the whole DeSantis....thing.
Tumblr media
Really like this one, especially the sewing needle weapons.
Tumblr media
Goddamn Scar, cut back on the vaping man! What the actual fuck with this one?
Okay I'm out of space for pictures in this one so gonna continue this in a part 2.

Did you go into I Feel You Linger In The Air with a lot of expectations? Personally I'm a huge fan of Nonkul so when the cast was announced I was quite livid and my expectations raised a lot when the pilot trailer was dropped but Dee Hup House followed that pilot trailer with Step By Step, Show Me Love and Hidden Agenda so by the time IFYLITA aired, I felt like I had to try minimizing my expectations as much as possible because it's Tee Bundit & co. I can't quite put into words but what about IFYLITA that makes each episode builds up so well and I never really feel like it lost its pace? plot? narrative? (except for maybe a few plot threads I could overlook). What do you think Shan? What do you think are the key elements that keeps IFYLITA's narrative so engaging even though this could have been like any other modern-guy-accidentally-time-traveled-to-the-past-to-fall-in-love-with-guy-from-the-past series?
My friends can attest, I went into I Feel You Linger in the Air with unreasonably high expectations, because I fucking love historicals and time travel romances and before this year we had precious little of either from Thailand. I was so hype for this project from the moment it was announced. And then Step by Step happened and I decided to willfully ignore the Dee Hup House and Tee Bundit parts of this project in order to stay hype. Surely, it would be fine!
And it has, mostly. I can't pretend we haven't seen some Tee Bundit hallmarks in this production. For the first half of the show, he seemed pretty uninterested in the romance, focusing most of the story time on building out the side characters and the politics of the period and leaving Jom and Yai's connection underdeveloped. He has given us almost no information on the time travel mythology, so the finale will either be jam packed with last minute exposition or leave Jom/us with no real understanding of the rules of this universe. He seemed unable to figure out how to make the romance and time travel and queer politics plots co-exist, so instead he kind of chunked them out, taking them one at a time and leading to some kinks in the pacing of each given plot. He spent a lot of time very carefully building serious conflicts only to hand wave them away in one very easy denouement.
But despite all that, this show just works, doesn't it? Usually when I am picking up this many structural issues in a show, I will lose my emotional connection to the story as my brain kicks into analytical mode. But that didn't happen here. The emotions of this story stuck with me throughout; I care about all the characters, I am invested in everyone getting what they deserve, and I was sobbing my little heart out last week as Jom and Yai said their long goodbye. It's been such a beautiful journey, if imperfect, and I credit that to a few things:
Writing aside, the other aspects of this production are all around phenomenal. The cinematography, the set and costume design, the lighting, the music. It's all working together to make this time and place feel so vivid and real. It's so gorgeous to look at and the show really makes you want to just sink into it and get immersed.
Bright and Nonkul were perfectly cast in this, and they have been absolutely killing it in these roles. Jom and Yai feel so real to me, both as individuals and as a pair. I really believe in their connection, which is no small thing given the aforementioned underwriting of its development. In a story like this the romance needs to be strong enough that you believe these two would seek each other out across time and space, and I do believe it for them. A lot of that can be credited to the remarkable chemistry these two performers have built together.
The non-romance aspects of the plot are actually compelling. It's always risky to add in a bunch of side stories to a simple romance; you risk distracting from the main story in a way that actually does some damage or leaves the audience bored or confused. But here, the choices about what to add made for a compelling cast of characters, a stronger tie to real history, and an all around more queer show. I love that we got a proper lesbian romance, that we got to see an oppressed woman come into her power, that we got a het dude learning how to be an ally, and that we got to see a queer community form around and bolster Yai and Jom. It's really special and the best of what Tee's interests can lead to when he marshals them well.
So yes, I do think this show stands apart from others in this genre for what it brought to the formula that feels new and fresh. I wish it was more widely accessible because it's truly one of the most beautiful dramas I have ever seen and easily one of the best Thai shows of the year.

Re: suits, there are hundreds of different types of suits, but the most common cuts are british, american and italian. I could see Lando (aka would love to see) most likely in an italian cut (slim tailoring on trousers and jacket, unstructured shoulders, light cloth (not colour but fabric) also looks very nice with an open collar and no tie...). Typical big brand names here are Zegna, Armani or Attolini, I personally love Kiton and Brioni as well, but just googling itlian cut suits should show some good results.
For Oscar, I would adore a (for once) properly tailored brutish cut suit (higher waistline for the trousers, more structure in the shoulders, tapered waist, thicker fabrics). Maybe even make it a proper three-piece bc ever since the wetsuit pics from Australia, I think we all agree that those curves need to be shown more often. Examples here are Ted Baker, Dunhill and ofc everything Savile row.
Tho if we keep with the Mclaren sponsors, Reiss does some great work as well. There's a double-breasted tuxedo jacket in this year's collection that I would love to see Lando in (then again tuxedos are a whole nother topic ...)
This got very long and is probably not very helpful but I love infodumping about fashion lol <3
i know you were self conscious about writing at length about this but all i have to say is: yes. here is some additional photographic evidence from my POV;
lando in snazzy italian tailoring, but to take the stylised vector a bit further:
exhibit a: asymmetric waistcoat with steampunk details
exhibit b: italian but with a fun pattern
exhibit c: open collar a step further, he could so rock a 70s suit. also just really need him to rock the gucci glasses with some shiny loafers like he’s sooooo got that vibe. im thinking how bruno mars and harry styles wear that kind of suiting sometimes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
now to our elusive chanteuse f1 driver oscar jack. i feel like it’s, like what you described, about a classic style but with really fine details. good fabrics, simple cuts, plain colourways. below is pretty stylised but also this is rpf and it’s my playground and if we were claiming realism we should just put the rpf toys down full stop and i am not doing that!!
if taking a costume designer’s perspective too, there could be soooo much you could say with layering and pattern and contrast depending where we are in the story or plot. the idea of fic!oscar in a classic brit cut suit with tiny revealing details like a handkerchief (lando’s) or a button (a nod to a family member or a friend) is very dear to me.
the other option i like is a classic tux jacket with tails and crisp shirt and a a sky blue handkerchief, like idk that image also tickles me for some reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway so i had been thinking about a tailor AU- *loud scuffling noise as i try to put wayward au ideas back in their box*
p.s. oscar in dunhill... like u were cooking but u especially cooked w that one....
and tagging the people who might be interested in this conversation i invite y’all to weigh in!! @cx-boxbox @kichona-s and @jusst-you-race

‘Loki’ Costumes season 2 – review (critical)
Accidentally bumped into information that the ‘Loki’ series are nominated for Costume Designers Guild Award 2024. Then watched an official Marvel Studios video about hidden details in Loki’s costumes season 2. And – WTF?
In general, the impression is like the creators thought ‘this fine actor will make even this shit work’. I mean, ‘Loki’ designer Christine Wada announces ‘a new tie and a new coat’ in season 2 as smth really great and unexpected. Well, after a prison jumpsuit and a torn and bloodied shirt of the 1st season, yes – this is really new!
She brags about authentic costumes from 1970s and 1890s, but I think there’s not much to boast about. I mean, the designers of ‘Thor’ 2011 had much more work to do – to create Norse-fantasy-styled costumes based on ridiculous comic pajamas from scratch. And they nailed it! And they won the award – absolutely deservedly! Here… well, some suits. Yes, some work is done, but still – they’re just suits (not even that pretty). Nothing award-worthy. The frilly 70’s-styled shirt he’s wearing is outright ugly. If you’ve seen ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, maybe you remember a second-hand robe Ron’s wearing to the Yule Ball. Same shit.
I was surprised to learn about gold embroidery on Loki’s final drapes costume. In shitty lighting of the scene I failed to notice any details. ‘Loki’s final transformation reimagines his godly form with a new humility’ – why doesn’t Thor get to wear drapes in ‘Thor’ 2011 after becoming worthy and humble? Odin wears a gold armour – why isn’t he humbled with plain drapes? Huh? Why is only Loki… ah, yes, it’s Loki. Silly me, I forgot. Everyone deserves a beautiful costume, but not him. Also, why horns are not gold??? They’re always gold!
In general, his new costume is dull – no interesting eye-catching little embellishments, no distinct colours. I mean, look at Wanda’s new costume, at Sam’s. Heck, even Thor’s. Loki’s new costume is just for any other character – nothing speaks about Loki here. Nothing Norse, just simple and plain. And ‘simple and plain’ isn’t supposed to be about Loki – any kind of Loki, myth, comic or MCU.

Wanda maximoff x reader
Summary: Y/N is not a hero—just a stunt double, living in the shadows of others' spotlight. But when her path crosses with Wanda Maximoff’s, their worlds begin to collide in unexpected ways. Drawn together by fate, their bond deepens as they face forces neither of them fully understands. In the fight to protect what matters most, they’ll discover that when two worlds collide, the aftermath leaves nothing untouched—and everything at risk.
Chapter 1
The morning sun hung low in the sky, still burning off the thin layer of mist that clung to the Hollywood Hills like a blanket. The backlot of the Avengers set was buzzing with energy—crew members rushing to adjust equipment, directors shouting orders over megaphones, and costumed actors casually sipping coffee, their faces painted with a curious mixture of anticipation and boredom.
And then there was Y/N.
Perched on the edge of a towering scaffold, overlooking a massive rig designed to simulate an explosion, Y/N adjusted the straps on the harness and secured the last of the gear. Their job for today was simple, at least on paper: a high-flying, pyro-filled, mid-air collision sequence. The directors had already referred to it as "insane" at least three times that morning.
"Don't die on us, Y/N," the assistant director quipped as he handed them the final safety check clipboard. He said it in a half-joking, half-serious tone, which was probably warranted, considering the number of moving parts involved in this particular stunt.
"Die? On *this* set?" Y/N smirked as they signed off the checklist, handing it back. "I've survived worse hangovers."
The assistant director chuckled nervously, unsure whether they were serious or not, then backed away toward the rest of the crew. That was the thing about Y/N. They carried this effortless calm with them, as if nothing really got to them—whether it was a fiery explosion or an awkward conversation at craft services. Cool, mysterious, and, in a way, untouchable.
And definitely sarcastic.
Y/N was used to being the one people whispered about, the anonymous face in the background doing the death-defying work for the more marketable stars. It suited them just fine. They didn't need the limelight; they just liked the thrill.
Today, however, things were different. Word had spread across the set that Wanda Maximoff—well, Elizabeth Olsen—was visiting today for a few interview segments to help promote the movie. Apparently, some of the new magic sequences were going to be inspired by her suggestions, so she'd been invited to consult on a few scenes.
Y/N didn't pay much attention to it at first. It wasn't like they hadn't seen stars on set before. The only difference was that *this* star had unknowingly been part of Y/N's life in more ways than one. But that was a story for another day.
The crew was getting into position when a sudden hush fell over the set. From the corner of their eye, Y/N spotted Elizabeth—no, Wanda—walking onto the scene, flanked by a couple of producers. She had this easy grace about her, not in an untouchable Hollywood way, but in a quiet, composed sort of way. She wasn't wearing anything flashy, just jeans and a simple jacket, her hair loose around her shoulders. Her eyes, though—they were sharp, taking in everything around her.
Y/N leaned back against the scaffold rail, adjusting their gloves as they watched Wanda from a distance. For a moment, they considered how wild it was to see her in person, after all the times they'd watched her on screen. But then, duty called, and Y/N's attention snapped back to the present. The stunt coordinator was shouting final instructions, and Y/N could feel the buzz of excitement creeping up their spine.
"Okay, Y/N," the director called out. "We're rolling in five. You ready to do your thing?"
"Always." Y/N's voice was light, but their focus was razor-sharp.
As the cameras started rolling, Y/N took a deep breath. The stunt was about as dangerous as it could get without crossing into 'this is just asking for trouble' territory. The plan was to leap from the scaffold, crash through a series of glass panels, and then land in a roll just as the pyro charges went off. A split second too early or late, and it wouldn't be pretty.
The moment the signal was given, Y/N leaped. The air whipped past them, the world blurring into a rush of color and noise. Glass shattered around them in a symphony of chaos, perfectly timed with the crackling explosions that bloomed behind. For a few heart-pounding seconds, it was just them and the stunt—adrenaline surging as they twisted mid-air, every muscle primed for impact.
Then, the landing. A perfect roll, and they were up on their feet in an instant. The set erupted in cheers and applause. Y/N casually brushed some glass shards from their jacket and smirked as they caught their breath. Not bad. Not bad at all.
But as the cheers started to die down, Y/N noticed Wanda standing at the edge of the set, her eyes locked on them. She had that look—the kind people had when they weren't quite sure what to make of you. It wasn't the usual admiration that stunt performers got, but something more. She was intrigued, maybe even a little impressed. Y/N shot her a wink, just to see what would happen.
Wanda raised an eyebrow, a small smile tugging at the corner of her lips.
After the take was done, Y/N made their way over to the side of the set where the crew was resetting for the next shot. They grabbed a bottle of water from the table, taking a long drink when they felt a presence behind them. Turning slightly, they found Wanda standing there, arms casually crossed, still watching them.
"Not bad," she said, her tone teasing but warm.
"Not bad?" Y/N raised an eyebrow, feigning offense. "I risk my life for this movie, and all I get is a 'not bad'?"
Wanda chuckled softly. "Well, I've seen explosions bigger than that. Maybe you're just spoiled by the CGI."
Y/N laughed, leaning back against a table. "Fair enough. Guess I'll have to blow up something bigger next time."
She took a step closer, her curiosity evident. "Do you always make a habit of throwing yourself into danger like that?"
Y/N shrugged, a grin playing on their lips. "What can I say? I like to keep things interesting. Plus, it's not as bad as it looks."
Wanda gave them a long look, as if she were trying to figure out what made them tick. "You must be either very brave or very reckless."
Y/N tilted their head, pretending to think it over. "Why not both?"
There was a moment of silence, filled with the distant sounds of the crew bustling around them. Wanda looked at Y/N, her eyes flicking with something almost playful. "Well, just so you know, next time you jump through fire, I expect to see a little more flair."
Y/N chuckled. "Oh, trust me. You haven't seen anything yet."
Wanda's smile widened before she gave a nod and turned to walk away, leaving Y/N standing there with a mischievous grin on their face.
"By the way," Y/N called after her. "Let me know if you need a stunt double for your magic tricks. I'm pretty good with sleight of hand too."
Wanda paused, glancing back over her shoulder with a smirk. "I'll keep that in mind."
And just like that, she was gone, melting back into the chaos of the set. Y/N couldn't help but feel that this wouldn't be the last time they crossed paths. Something about her intrigued them too—and they were never one to shy away from a challenge.
As the crew reset for the next stunt, Y/N pulled their jacket a little tighter and prepared to go again. The day was far from over, and who knew what other surprises it held?

hi! have you done a review for yurbles and their colors? they're my favorite neo species. would love to hear your thoughts!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yurbles are a classic Neopet design in the sense that they sure look like A Creature(TM), but not anything that could be easily identified. Their names would suggest gerbils, but their faces are almost raccoon-like, complete with markings around their eyes. On top of that, they're also bipedal with furry manes and lovely cinnamon roll-like ears, which are their most memorable feature.
Visually, their design is also nicely balanced—cream on the underbelly and muzzle, a mane to divide the head from the body, and a few black accents here and there. Like all good Neopet designs, they're simple but not to the point of looking boring or too plain.
Tumblr media
And thankfully Yurbles were pretty much left untouched by customization, with the only major change being the addition of a fist to hold items with. I actually like the converted version a smidge more than the original, as they now have more of a body/better proportions and their weird-looking feet got slightly less weird.
Favorite Colours:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grey: I went over this in my grey color review so I'll keep things brief here, but grey's one of my favorite Yurble colors primarily because of the UC/styled version. The converted design is fine and could be a nice base for customization even if it's a bit plain, but the UC design is incredible. The! Ears!!! I also love its extra long mane and sopping wet meow-meow expression. The whole design has a lovely downward flow to it as well.
Tumblr media
Halloween: I'm not usually big into Halloween pets that are clearly wearing costumes (as opposed to just being creatures and monsters inherently), but the Halloween Yurble just being a Yurble in a Tax Beast costume is pretty delightful. The design looks enough like the Tax Beast to be instantly recognizable, but adapts things like the Yurble's ears in nicely. Fun stuff.
Tumblr media
Origami: Origami pets can be hit or miss depending on their execution, but this one's particularly nice. The neutral brown palette is lovely, and I really like little details like the eye being sketched in, complete with crosshatch lines. What's really nice is the mane, which uses flower-patterned paper and folds that give it a great sense of movement, along with a surprisingly realistic folded paper feeling. I'd argue that this is by far the best Origami pet we've gotten so far, with the Korbat as a respectful second place.

Nausicaä costume(s): Research
My favorite part of costuming from animation is imagining how the simple textures of animated cloth can be brought into real life. I take into account setting, especially if it’s a fantasy/historical/historical fantasy story, to determine what materials the characters would have access to before I decide what materials I will use. Certain concessions have to be made for cost/efficiency’s sake, but if something ends up taking more time in order to be cost-effective, I will usually take that route.
For Nausicaä, the princess of the Valley of the Wind, the cloth they have access to (in the logic set forth by Miyazaki in the manga) is wool woven from the hair of the goats and long-hair cattle raised in the Valley of the Wind, as well as a linen-like cloth woven from fibers raised in the valley. The manga confirms they raise these animals, and the film shows the many fields of agricultural plants.
Tumblr media
Some observations I’ve made about outfits across kingdoms:
-There is a tank top-like foundation garment worn across kingdoms, and most outfits feature waist-fastening trousers. They fit loosely around the leg, but can be easily tucked into boots and have protective gaiters/greaves fastened over them. Materials could be different across kingdoms, but I speculate the tank/undershirt garment is linen and the trousers are undyed wool. In the photo below, the two women with Nausicaä are a Pejite citizen and the mother of the Pejite princess. Nausicaä wears the same undershirt and trouser combination as the Pejite citizen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
-The kingdom-specific variations seem to be in the cut/coloring/decoration of the tunics; neckline, pocket placement, gem embellishment, and applique/embroidery designs are examples of these variations. Below are images of Princess Kushana of Tolemekia, Princess Lastelle of Pejite, Princess Nausicaä disguised as a Pejite citizen, and finally Nausicaä in her most formal outfit we see. Headwear also varies across kingdoms; Tolemekia uses the most metal and Princess Kushana’s may show her high status as both military leader and royalty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the outfit I’m referring to as the “princess” outfit, or the most formal-appearing of the outfits featured in the movie, this is likely where the finest (meaning fineness of the spun thread and tightness of the weave) of the fabrics would be used. However, given that the people of the Valley of the Wind are very community-focused and their princess regularly engages directly with her people regardless of social standing, the “finest” fabric is probably available for community members to use and sew with, just dyed in different colors. Only Nausicaä wears the bright, sky-blue fabric, and her “finest” fabric version is a less-saturated hue of that sky-blue; I am going to assume this blue is reserved for members of the royal family, but not used to its full concentration/saturation capabilities since they are a fairly humble kingdom. The tunic also features pale purple trim around the neckline, sleeve cuffs, and the hemline of the skirt; a belt/sash in the same color is tied at the waist.
The trousers and boots seem to be the same as in other outfits (including the flight suit, further reinforcing my theory that these are base garments and the headwear and tunics are the variants), the same off-white of undyed wool and sturdy brown boots found across kingdoms.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In my mind’s eye, the headwear could be knit large in wool and then felted, with the gems sewn into the fabric after the fact. It could also be the same fabric as her tunic but lined/reinforced with a stiffened fabric to make it appear as a truly matching set.
Tumblr media
Nausicaä’s flight tunic is a similar, slightly darker shade of blue than her formal tunic. It does not function as armor, but it is worn with protective gloves, protective gaiters/greaves, and a flexible head covering; the tunic itself is soft, pliable and features six cylindrical pockets for flares on its front. This flare-pocket style (in the animated film) is unique to the Valley of the Wind; Lord Yupa stores his flares in a similar manner, but that same storage is not featured on Asbel of Pejite’s tunic when he is shown in the Sea of Decay with his rifle. The neck fastening does not allow the collar (looks to me like a band collar) to close fully, but allows for it to be pulled over the head easily. I personally like the idea that this is a short length of spiral lacing (with the spiral facing towards the skin) with cord dyed to match the blue of her gloves, gaiters, and headwear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The flight tunic is the shortest of the tunics in the movie, hitting her upper thigh. Nausicaä is proportioned like a classic shoujo heroine (in that her legs are long for her body), so some concessions may be made for people who are trying to balance screen accuracy with personal wearability. I personally will be going with personal wearability and, while my legs are long, my torso is not, so I will make adjustments in my own pattern.
Fabric-wise, wool seems most likely here (and is confirmed in a special insert to the Nausicaä manga to be specifically felted wool). The tunic skirt/flare is unlined. The whole tunic can be moved by wind, but not in a wispy way, which makes me think this is, within the logic of the manga and film, felted from a tightly-woven lightweight wool. For story accuracy, I could go with this -- but if I want to wear this tunic in daily life without looking very obviously costumed, I’ve never been a fan of felted wool on garments that aren’t coats. I plan to go with a woven wool fabric with a visible weave.

My first guess was that these gloves were wool and wet-felted directly onto a mold, but seeing the little finger seam gave me pause. The only soft, pliable material that still allows for some grip that the Valley of the Wind would have access to (that I can currently think of) would be hide/leather; blue leather dye seems hard to come by, though. The boots are also likely leather (maybe even the Valley breathing masks), though they could also be felted wool with leather/suede soles. If not made from leather, the gaiters/greaves, hat, and gloves are dyed blue would likely be felted wool.

Next is the prophecy tunic. This tunic is from the kingdom of Pejite; see one of the earlier images where the pink tunic is in the woman’s arms. It has a tall band collar that closes completely at the neck with a visible join and its most recognizable feature is the turtle-like design across the chest
It is originally pink but changes color when the blood of a baby Ohmu dyes it a dark blue. The blood also overdyes Nausicaä’s trousers a pale blue (the resulting shade is not unlike the blue of her princess outfit).

The skirt of the prophecy tunic falls below Nausicaä’s knees and is unlined. The sleeves flare somewhat over the wrist (they do not fit tightly) and a belt is worn at Nausicaä’s waist.

Based on what we know about Pejite from the manga, plus the similarities in how the center of this turtle-like design and various jewelries are shaded in the film, it is very likely that this design is beaded/beadwork and stitched/embroidered onto the garment. Given that the design is unaffected by the Ohmu’s blood when the fabric items are overdyed, they would need to be nonporous. I’m thinking carnelian and/or red jasper for the cabochon in the center (could also be made with smaller beads since finding a chunk of polished stone that size would be challenging, not to mention expensive and heavy to wear) and porcelain or white stoneware clay beads for the main portion of the design.
