as one of the three mustard fans i feel obligated to yap about him to anyone who will listen.

in the grand scheme of things he’s not particularly important, but the few scenes he’s in definitely are.

he brings up something that many people forgot while watching the show.

that even in a world where people can turn their skin into steel or shoot acid from their hands, a bullet is a bullet.

that no matter how powerful your quirk is, if you get shot in the head you’re gonna fucking die 😭 i mean unless you have a regeneration quirk but those are pretty rare and if someone unloads a revolver into your skull i doubt your quirk would be able to keep up with the damage.

it shows people that a villain doesn’t need a powerful quirk to be dangerous. someone who’s competent with a gun or a knife can be just as dangerous as someone like dabi.

he’s also extremely intelligent. being able to tell where people are based on the movement of the gas isn’t something inherently related to his quirk, it’s a learned skill. he’s also very skilled with his gun, he was able to destroy tetsutetsu’s mask with one point blank shot. as well as being able to hit the same spot multiple times to break through tetsutetsu’s hardening.

when kendo says that mustard carries a gun around because he “can’t win a fight on his own merits” as much as i love her, she’s really stupid for that.

snipe’s whole thing is guns. his quirk has nothing to do with guns inherently, he just chose to use them. and support gear is a massive industry in this universe.

and no one talks about why this middle schooler has a gun and is hanging out with the LOV. that’s not exactly normal middle schooler behavior.

i have some theories so bear with me while i ramble about him.

so obviously he has a villainous quirk. his gas can kill people if they’re exposed to a concentrated amount of it for long enough. and he can’t control where the gas goes, only how much he releases.

(this is more of a headcannon but i like it too much to not share it. his father can create small amounts of purple mist around his body, and his mother sweats bleach. but one of his grandparents could create an ammonia based gas. and what happens when you mix ammonia and bleach? you get mustard gas. ik it’s kinda dumb but i like it.)

i believe that he had a hard time controlling his quirk as a child. with strong emotions causing him to activate his quirk.

in this universe there’s definitely schools/institutions for kids with dangerous quirks. so his parents probably shipped off to one of those institutions so they didn’t have to deal with him.

i feel like he resents the UA students because if an employer sees they went to UA, they have a way higher chance of getting the job.

but when they see that he went to an institution for kids with dangerous quirks, he could be rejected on the spot.

As you know I have talked about mustard before and the potential his storyline has here.

Your whole rant makes me think that mustard in canon is basically the vision people have for fanon villain izuku and I love it.

Mustard brings up a good point which is that people rely on their quirks too much because someone with a uselss or a weak quirk can still be dangerous and powerful by honing in their other skills. Heroes who rely on their quirks primarily and nothing else are the ones that get injured and hurt the most because even if you have a powerful quirk it's not guaranteed to help you in every situation. Sometimes quirks cant always go up against technology as we see in the vigilante arc technology can very much overpower strong quirks whether you like it or not.

Oh I actually do like your headcanon. Personally I have always interpreted mustard as having an anaesthetic type quirk something similar to midnight. I wish the series delved into midnight and mustard interactions especially because mustard is too young to go to jail as people in Japan can only be punished for their crimes when they're above the age of 14.

Reputations and public image are very important things in MHA whether you're a hero or not. Mustard going to that type of institution is interesting although I don't think there are any in canon. I have interpreted it as mustard having something similar to toga where they both suffered from horrible quirk counselling and were told to control themselves not taught how and an incident happend and they ended up here. However everything that comes to mustard to me is 10 times more interesting simply because of how young he really is and how vague everything about him is

i'm not 100% set on my viewpoint of this so take this with a grain of salt. i don't think the concept of transmasc john really "fits" within homestuck's narrative. i also don't think that necessarily makes it "problematic." before i elaborate any further i do want to say that june is definitely canon in homestuck 2, and I really do think it's important to recognize that when referring to hs2 (ultdirkjohn shippers.... please recognize the reality of the source material. please). aside from that though, from what we know, john in homestuck proper was written to be a cis guy. if andrew hussie ever shows up online again and says that john is actually transfem coded (similar to a celeste-esque scenario) then my thoughts on this will definitely change accordingly, but as of now i don't see the harm in taking a character who, as far as we know, was written to be a cis boy and headcanoning him as a trans guy. and again, at the same time i do think it's important to "come up for air" so to speak and realize that it's really not something that's part of the narrative or supported by it

tldr i don't think it's harmful as long as you're 1) not discrediting that she's transfem in hs2 and 2) recognizing the actual framework of the original story and how that framework doesn't necessarily support that headcanon.

all that said... i also don't think that this is necessarily a world-ending issue and not worth tying yourself up into knots over. even if i'm wrong about all this and transmasc john IS problematic in some way, i'd still argue that it isn't inherently on the same level as outright bigotry

tbh, I agree very much with what that blog said -- amir talai said "him being aroace is not explicitly known" which is true. the word "aro" hasn't been said explicitly in the way "ace" has. it's been stated as word of god and discussed and hinted, but it's not been said BY any character/s (yet 👀👀👀)

I think a VA of the character saying "my way of reading things is if it's in the script it's explicit, and if it's not, it's not" makes a lot of sense. that being said, it's not to say it won't be made explicit down the line, in the way "ace in the hole" was a way of making the aceness a Statement That This Is The Character

amir talai strikes me as the kind of guy who's been consistently very deliberate in only discussing what's on the page about his character, so not wanting to discuss his being aroace until/if it's on the page is very fair -- with "ace in the hole" he did also speak about how that was a way of making something explicit, while still being true to the character not knowing the terminology or the identity. until that moment, "ace" was not explicit either

(I don't btw personally totally agree on reading characters this way, considering the long history of queercoding being that one Couldn't make something explicit + that's still a very deliberate method of writing show-don't-tell today, But that's coming from my side as someone who's well-versed in that history, rather than a "I am the random person voicing a character and I do what's on the page in front of me, because that is my job and I talk about what is on the page in front of me" -- but he's clearly also trying to learn, which is awesome)

also he DID do some learning/hyping on aro-identity during this week of aro awareness, so it's also nice that he definitely understands that ace and aro aren't interchangeable and is putting in that work to open his horizons on that front

I totally agree with what the post said. Alastor got 1000% confirmed as ace by that joke and personally I also think that it included him being aromantic. A lot of people still think that ace and aro go hand in hand the same way that they assume that (for example) bisexual and biromantic go hand in hand (which they don't but a lot of people think that) so maybe the writers are part of that group. Also, like the other blog said, Rosie said the "ace in the hole" joke in relation to him dating Charlie and it basically went "she's too young for you lololol jkjk ik you're ace" (which doesn't stop people from being in an alloromantic relationship, people just think aro and ace means the same thing) so I do think they included aro into that scene. However aro actually being in the script is only my own interpretation so I get it if people think otherwise.

I completely support your point about stating things explicitly and queer coding. I think Alastor is extremely aro-coded apart from the fact that his VA didn't actually un-confirm it - he just said that it's not explicitly in the script. Personally, it's super duper implied that Alastor is aromantic but again, I get it if people don't see it. So yeah, despite what anybody says, as long as Alastor isn't confirmed to be not-aromantic I'll headcanon him on the arospec

Also, even if Alastor turned out to be not-aro, I don't think anything would change because about 95% of this fandom doesn't give a shit about aros or aces and just continued erasing Alastors aroace identity that we thought he had at that point so yeah.

Ik I shouldn’t take a stupid fandom meme that seriously and even actual Ruby fans use this damn joke, but I’m just so tired from my personal experience how so many people keep bringing it up like it’s a fact and they’ve constantly made it Ruby’s only defining personality trait (which literally isn’t canon).

Also call me biased or whatever but I also find it insulting to Ruby’s character like… I can’t speak like NND is factually canon but as someone who personally sees Penny and Ruby’s relationship as more than just friends it just sickens me even as a stupid fandom “joke” people would imply Ruby hates LGBT people so much she wouldn’t even have any feelings for Penny. Tbh (and as a lesbian myself), at first I found this meme funny because it was from the fandom and from queer people, and from people who knew this was a dumb joke and that Ruby wasn't really homophobic.

When it started to be annoying is when it got out from the fandom by people who stopped watching the show a long time ago (the traditional "RwbY waS bEtTer BEfiorE V3" bla bla bla people), or by people who never watched the show. And straight people lmao.

It's the only way to protect yourself and your mind, and I have no regrets in blocking people because the option is here for that.

And I agree on the fact that this is stupid considering Penny was important to Ruby, and IS still important despite being gone. And I also completely agree on the fact that Ruby probably had feelings for her and never got the chance to understand them and to realize what she felt, this is THE tragic yuri ever I will never shut up about these two-- So yeah it's pretty dumb considering Ruby was lashing out because she bottled up, kept everything to herself for so long, she exploded to the people who had found happiness right in front of her. The relationship isn't the issue for Ruby here, it's the whole situation, her sister is able to be happy with Blake while Ruby falls more and more into despair and isn't able to protect anyone. It's such a complex mental state and difficult to read from someone who don't think that way (I do act like Ruby, working on it, so I understand what she feels). I think before laughing about dumb memes people should be able to understand the situation fully

Ik most fanfics make it out that she's insaine for wearing veils while in the fanfic Ahrensbach wears veils to 'protect themselves from sun's rays' and treat it like canon and for importing spices from Ahrensbach as this huge threat to the duchy because (insert 100+ medical reasons) and honestly? It reads like someone who's wanting to become a bit closer to their dead mother by practicing things her dead mother practised (and don't get me started on how yucky I feel everytime when Rozemyne superiorly tells everyone how spices are ruining their stomachs and the amounts of spice they eat is 'unsafe', conveniently ignoring how spicy South Asian food can get yet not many over there's forming stomach ulcers or on the verge of death because they smell 1 tokbokki-)

So previously I did not know that much abt aob fanfic but.

IMO the answer is that AOB is classist/misogynist/xenophobic and fans end up either picking up on that or being drawn to it. It's a pretty simplistic answer but it explains a lot of the really strange behavior that goes on.

Veils are pretty clearly an attempt to invoke hijab which is by itself fine, YS is actually desperately lacking cultural differences between duchies, and if that's a Lanzenavian custom that's been imported to Ahrensbach that'd actually mimic how wimples are at least believed to originate from hijab. However even the way canon treats veils is really weird. Veils shielding you from the sun is actually mentioned in p5v6 during this Detlinde pov chapter

but since Detlinde and Georgine are veiled indoors, they're also almost definitely worn for cultural reasons. All of which is again fine... except that they're the evil duchy. The veiled characters we see are Detlinde, Georgine, Veronica, and Aurelia(Fraularm and Alstede aren't veiled, so this is presumably an optional cultural practice). Three of them are villains, while Aurelia's reason is that she's ashamed of strongly resembling Veronica and wants to hide her face, which would be an absurd thing to expect of her, except that Ferdinand never shuts the fuck up about Detlinde looking like Veronica so she probably would face discrimination for resembling someone in her family. There is not a single even neutral female character... well, in Ahrensbach, but also specifically who wears a veil except Aurelia who's wearing hers for a very specific reason unrelated to her being from Ahrensbach.

Aurelia also gets discriminated against for wearing a veil, which would've been a decent way to show a conflict where a likeable character ISN'T portrayed as the unambiguous good party except that the story doesn't seem to think this is strange. No characters really push back on the validity of this suspicion and Aurelia herself seems to accept it as a matter of course. The fact that fans have obviously picked up on the fact that veils are meant to be a strange exotic cultural practice and are writing characters that way themselves is pretty telling.

As you say, it's fine to veil. There are a lot of reasons to do it from the utilitarian sun protection to propriety to her being proud of being from Ahrensbach, which is in itself neutral unless you accept the premise that Ahrensbach is the evil duchy or you think veils are inherently suspicious.

Veronica's lack of archduke candidate education is obviously irrelevant because she managed to scheme enough to create the Veronica faction. The women had a phd in machinations and knowledge of enough archducal matters to function as the Aub's first wife, so either she got an archducal education once she was married or she just didn't need it which could be how it works because unlike female aubs, female archducal wives aren't expected to take over their husband's work when their husbands are pregnant. Even if she was uneducated enough that she struggled with handling administrative duties, how this would lead to her abuse is a problem we apparently have our strongest misogyny soldiers working on because those two things are unconnected. In canon characters outside of Rihyarda are pretty uninterested in why Veronica or Gabriele are the way they are, but most people aren't evil because they're stupid, they're evil because they have what they believe to be a completely valid motivation for whatever heinous thing they're doing, and the way YS treats faction politics definitely could've been a major source of her desperation to solidify her power alongside her stated internalized misogyny. (Her internalized misogyny isn't necessarily the story's misogyny, but it is strange that this isn't really pushed back on and the only victim who gets much spotlight is Ferdinand despite Veronica seeming to target women much more harshly.)

None of this is a defense of Veronica, I disagree with the thing where she systemicatically abused and ostracized a massive portion of the duchy and my condolences to her victims, but the ways AOB chooses to signal that especially female characters are villains is notable and by notable I mean falls into some patterns. This is mainly that damnable Ferdinand's fault because he 1) will not shut the fuck up about how everyone he dislikes is basically his mommy reincarnated and 2) hates women so much it's unreal, so the fact that he's Rozemyne's main source for a lot of characters colors that. You could argue that this is him and other characters intentionally being written as unreliable narrators, but if that's true then it's a little strange that the fandom is so united on taking his word as gospel, and when read it does not come off that way. Veronica's deal being attributed to stupidity might come from how Ferdinand treats Detlinde if I had to find a reason for it, but honestly the machinations of the AOB fandom are in some ways incomprehensible to me.

The spice thing is just straight up racist. It's racist in canon, the way that all spices are lumped together when both nutmeg and chili peppers are "spices" despite having wildly varying flavors and effects is in itself racist. We don't get a single named spice. Are they talking about peppercorns? Chili peppers? Nutmeg? Cumin? What about ginger? Even assuming we're talking about specifically capsaicin, spicy food causing ulcers is mostly pop science, and the health risks beyond short-term pain pale in comparison to, like, alcohol. Spice tolerance is a thing and Rozemyne might not like a ghost pepper, but shockingly yeah cultures with a lot of spicy food aren't pretending to enjoy it as an elaborate bit(tteokbokki are Korean but I know what you're getting at). If Ahrensbach people eat food flavored with fantasy bird's eye peppers from a young age they're not gonna experience any problems from eating spice unless they have unrelated health issues.

As with everything the defense of this is probably that the characters are unreliable narrators. I've spent a lot of time arguing with people on this so at some point I just have to say that if every sympathetic character in the story is parroting something and no conflict ever arises from the fact that they're incorrect then the story is just having a character say something that is true in universe, and the fact that Ahrensbach and by proxy Lanzenavian culture are treated the way they are is xenophobic in Ahrensbach's case and racist in Lanzenave's. Fans are Like That because they pick up on this stuff and either uncritically accept it as just a thing that's true about AOB's worldbuilding that's neutral or were already prejudiced and therefore had no conflict when the story confirmed those prejudices. Which is another thing. If these characters are meant to be unreliable narrators, you'd think the fandom wouldn't uncritically accept character testimony so often!

Actually, the dual narrative purpose of a lot of the songs is what comes to mind here. When I was listening to everything, piecing together my best possible interpretation of the storylines, I didn't see how completely purposefully some songs are written to be from one character's perspective and yet be used to illustrate another's. It's like the band created a bunch of fictional artists and their music, and then used those fictional artists' songs to fucking… make a fandom playlist for their own characters?? It's hilarious and I love it but man, didn't see how it was being done until I think I read Kirb talking about it at one point and now I'm 100% behind that being the rationale for a lot of the songs being presented the way they are. Like, well, I know we're all sick of The Night We Met but obviously it's the perfect example of this and I should have realized after seeing the music video just how widespread this is throughout at least Vide Noir and probably Long Lost.

19: Favorite headcanon

Oh my goodness, how do I pick. Well, I think it has to be everything I've come up with for the Redmayne boys, since they lack backstory. Again I will point people to this fic as a place to get at some of what's going on in my head for them.

But I'll also give a tiny characterization rundown for the two that canon gives us nothing on:

Alex - oldest of the three. Quiet, kinda stoic, but absolutely fiercely dedicated to keeping the gang united, functional, vicious, and yet like, a whole thriving little found family community in a world where everything is stacked against all of them. Religiously (not literally religious, but, cultishly? lmao) dedicated to the World Ender. Sociopath with low empathy but really really good at caring for the people around him to the point where he can in fact seem soft and even warm. He's the big supportive pillar for the gang and he's basically the reason that the Redmayne family unit is so cohesive. Functionally aromantic in that he just has more important shit to take care of and also I'm not sure he's like, fully capable of relating to people in a normal way anyway. He got picked to lead for a reason and he's extremely good at doing that, and a lot of people have suffered as a result, and for these boys and girls, that's a very very good thing.

Dale - middle boy. Brilliant, creative, witty, but it's all sex drugs and rock and roll for him. Keeps up with politics and local events primarily as a way to figure out how to strike and where in order to cause the most damage to whoever the gang goes after. Responsible when he has to be, but he'd rather be high and writing songs and playing shows and feeling all the energy from the crowd - or all the energy from the rest of the Enders as they ride out on the streets at night, howling at the stars, keeping the city under their control. Some who knew him as a kid probably are very disappointed that he's "squandered" all his creativity and intelligence but he'd prefer to say he's doing it exactly right, because the freedom of being a World Ender and the ability to hit back at society for all it's done to keep the people down is far more important to him.

wraith: big loose fitting clothes that conceal a layer of body armor. they let him move and give him a bigger silhouette than he actually has and look deceptively weak? you go to kick a guy in a hoodie and your foot hits a kevlar vest instead. whisperer cape is a must. i dont think he knows the similarity. william was never big into capes i think if he ever saw anything of the whisperer it was only in passing and not enough to stick in his mind. full-face mask (which i would assume is like.... built into the hood somehow? to keep it up on his head better as hes moving), undecided on whether he would keep his hair fully covered or let some of it out from under the hood. i think at first his costume would be white with blue accents ("ghostly" vibes without being too scary) but as time goes on i think it would be cool if it got darker and darker until the white parts have gone from grey-dark grey-black (idk how that would work mechanically but. nudges greyscale implications)

failsafe: HONESTLYYYYY I REALLY LIKE WHAT YOU HAVE FOR HIM SO FAR. crop top is essential. failsafe has way more skin showing than imprint. i think hed keep his knuckles/forearms taped bc his fighting style is very physical? i know dakotas whole thing is kicks only but i think failsafe should get to punch things super hard too like cmon. hes got the likee.... headband mask . i like what u have for him a lot. i think his pants are a lot like wraiths thing where theyre loose and mobile but hes wearing armor under them.

imprint: tactical. his stuff is mostly black i dont think he would budge on that for anything. i do think he should have skin showing like. in case they get caught off guard by a fight i dont think hed want to take the time to have to pull off sleeves or gloves or whatever in case he needed to use his powers in a snap. i DO however think he has gloves just for convenience's sake. but i think he keeps specific body parts uncovered? majority of his arms for sure. he has the half-face mask. idk if this is something the prt would necessarily allow but i think he has a lot of straps and belts and things for holding weapons. i feel like hes trained in so many ways to fight he would probably always want at least a knife or gun on him at all times. the purple accents were the PR teams additions so he wouldnt be totally black. since he wanted to keep his shitty dyed purple hair, theyd at least make the costume match so it looked somewhat cohesive and intentional

i need you to know that this is the first ask i’ve ever been asked, thank you so much for believing in me to answer it. i will do my best without infodumping too much.

short answer: so many things. like so many i cant ever capture it. i’m being slightly funny in these descriptions but everyone has so much trauma. such a good show, i cannot recommend enough. everyone is an unreliable narrator :)

long answer:

louis: cant even begin to get into all that!!! but if i had to begin, stuck between humanity and vampirism; shame and liberation; forgetting and remembering… oh and also everyone is in love with him. he’s the one being interviewed! so we see everything from his point of view— mostly, besides the diaries that claudia wrote out.

claudia: made into a vampire at the age of 14, which isn’t supposed to happen!! fierce, smart vampire who is stuck in a body that cannot match her mind. doomed by the narrative to never be chosen by her father/brother louis over his romances. has a … tumultuous relationship with her mother lestat, who is actually her father that is her maker, because she is so like him. (maker= the vamp who made you a vamp) wish she could’ve read ‘i know why the caged bird sings’ so bad.

lestat (romance one of louis’): white, blonde, and french. mother of claudia, husband to louis— maker to both. temperamental, whore-like behavior. also we only know him through the lens of louis (and kinda claudia and armand) who is as unreliable of a narrator as they come— whether he means to be or not. lestat inspires quite an interesting fanbase— in show and in the fandom! theatre kid…

armand (romance two): thinks himself to be a pathetic sopping wet rag of a man but is one of the most powerful vampires. enchanting eyes and a helpless demeanor that makes you believe him while he gaslights you. a walking paradox. canonical minecraft player and potential old man fucker.

daniel (kinda third romance and also something much worse): born to fuck the vampires, forced to interview them and end up with a lifetime of psychological damage because of it. parallel to claudia in the most insane ways.

okay, one serious note: louis and claudia being Black in the show (as opposed to the book and movie, which saw louis as a white plantation owner) is a very important part of who they are. while all of the characters have deep traumas, i would not be doing a description of these characters justice without bringing up that louis, claudia, and armand— as he is south east asian— have unique problems due to their race, sexuality, gender— respectively and overlapping— in the past and present. the show is great for many things, but one of my favorites is how it explores the way that people of color— and those who are or intersect with being queer or female-identifying— have power in this imagined world of vampirism, but how they are still impacted by being part of a marginalized category. that tangent was kinda just for me.. i’m doing my thesis about this and this show, generally.

South Park Filler Guide - Season 4

I find the existence of filler guides quite amusing, since for some shows it makes sense (like Naruto), but for others (like Pokemon) it absolutely doesn’t and they still exist. So here is an attempt to do an absolutely unnecessary one just for fun. 😅

The classifications are CANON (an episode with major storylines present), LORE (in which we get significant backstory or world building, but could be skippable)  and FILLER (completely skippable episodic storytelling, not connected to overarching story arcs)

PLS my analysis will have spoilers, if you’re a first time viewer, just scroll to the bottom and read the list and only read full text if you are familiar with the content of the show already! S4E1 The Tooth Fairy Tats 2000 is CANON

Loogie will be in a later episode, not in a major role, but Kyle having one of his greatest speeches here in important, since his speeches become a focal point later, might as well include this one. S4E2 Cartman's Silly Hate Crime 2000 is FILLER

Let's be honest, Eric IS actually racist, so the point of this episode doesn't even stand in the long run. We all know this one for telling us that Clyde is the second fattest, but that's not even lore material, as Clyde is a very minor character at this point, and the only time it will matter at all is a time where it's also stated. S4E3 Timmy 2000 is CANON

Basically, the main storyline this season has is Timmy's integration with the kids and the community. So his episodes count, since this is the one string that really connect this season. This one is big, for introducing him as a character and classmate. (in the premier he has but a minor role) S4E4 Quintuplets 2000 is FILLER

Kenny has an interesting storyline of his own, but both that and the rest of the boys find themselves in a very self-contained story. S4E5 Cartman Joins NAMBLA is CANON

This is a big one regarding Kenny's deaths. We have the first big clue to his resurrections. Also, this episode has the incident that would later convince the school to fire Herbert. S4E6 Cherokee Hair Tampons is CANON

Herbert gets fired from school and becomes a writer. What the kids have going on is a classic Kyle/Eric plot. S4E7 Chef Goes Nanners is FILLER

A random crush that gets resolved by the end of the episode? Check. An old relic of the town which we have never seen before and will never see again? Check. S4E8 Something You Can Do With Your Finger is CANON

Yes, we get a lot of Randy backstory that explains so much about him. But that's nothing on its own. Fingerbang gets formed and it will return in one of the show's most important episodes! S4E9 Do The Handicapped Go To Hell? is CANON

Wait, so many canon episodes next to each other, is this season 1? Seriously, a lot of serialization happens in this season, unlike the last one. Satan and Saddam story arc continues. Timmy story arc continues. S4E10 Probably is CANON

It probably is. I mean, it's a direct follow-up to the previous episode, and delivers continuation. S4E11 Fourth Grade is CANON

Diane is introduced, Herbert storyline continues, the boys advance to a whole new grade! S4E12 Trapper Keeper is CANON

Herbert gets a new job, Ike starts at kindergarten. S4E13 Helen Keller! The Musical is CANON

Because as I said earlier, Timmy's story really makes this season a cohesive whole. S4E14 Pip is FILLER

I have always seen this episode as a different continuity, since it's basically just Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Some people seem to believe this happens with regular continuity Pip, but I hope not, because -HUGE SPOILERS- this version of Pip gets a much happier ending. S4E15 Fat Camp is FILLER

Eric doesn't really get skinny. S4E16 The Wacky Molestation Adventure is FILLER

But it's darn good filler! Episodic characters get the main roles and everything is back by the end. S4E17 A Very Crappy Christmas is FILLER

Morrigan's Custom Rig Tutorial - Making a Base Rig

So the lovely @mattodore asked me how to set custom rig heights, and also about having multiple "outfits" on the same rig, and since none of the tutorials I know of covered that, I decided to do one myself!

We're gonna cover how to set up a "base rig" for your sim, which includes their custom height and multiple outfits, so that you don't have to make a new rig from scratch every time you pose.

This is going under the cut, because it's gonna get long.

Basics:

For the purposes of this, I'm going to assume you know how to use SimRipper and blender at least a little bit. If you've never made a custom rig, this tutorial by @rebouks is a great place to start!

To follow this tutorial, you're going to need the following:

SimRipper

Blender (version of your choice, but remember that only certain versions technically work with s4s. Those include 2.78, 2.79, and anything above 3.3. I personally use 2.79, but that's because I don't like change.)

A sim of your choice, with multiple outfits, placed on any lot in any save.

Let's get started!

First Steps:

First off, you're going to need to rip your sim. Follow the tutorial I linked above to get your sim ripped, and into blender. Once you have your custom rig set up, we're ready to continue.

Optional Step 1: IK Chains

So, before you continue with this tutorial, there's something really easy you can do that will make pose-making much easier! Two things, actually. One of them is setting IK chains, and the other is locking the finger joints.

Setting IK chains means that when you move your sim's foot or hand, their whole arm moves with it, in a natural and logical way. This makes posing arms and legs SO much faster and easier.

To do it, select your sim's hand or foot joint, then go to the Bone Constraints tab in the side bar. Hit "add Bone Constraint" and select "Inverse Kinematics".

Then change the "chain length" setting to 3.

Now go back to the rig, hit "g" and see if your sim's arm moves, not just the hand. If it does, congrats, you did it! Now go through and do it for the other hand and feet.

Optional Step 2: Locking the Fingers

Sometimes when posing, you bend a finger from one direction, only to look at it from another angle and find that it looks broken. Luckily, there's an easy way to make sure that doesn't happen. (Credit to @ratboysims for the original tutorial on how to do this, but it seems to have been deleted.)

Select any of your sims' finger joints. I usually do the 1 and 2 joints, but not the 0 joint, but that's just personal preference. Hit the small plus sign at the top right of your screen to bring up the transform panel.

Under where it says "rotation", toggle the lock icons so that all of them except for the Z are locked.

Now when you rotate your sims' fingers they should only bend up or down, not side to side. If you need to bend them side to side for a specific reason, just unlock the locks, adjust the finger, and lock them again.

TIP: I advise having a blank, uncustomized rig that has the IK chains and locked fingers already done. That way, every time you make a custom rig, you don't have to redo this.

Now onto the part I was actually asked about...

Adjusting the Height:

If your sims are canonically different heights, you're going to want to keep that consistent when you pose them. Adjusting your sims' height in blender is SUPER easy!

Just right-click on any of the joints I've circled here:

Once you have the joint selected, 3 different colored arrows will show up. (If you're looking at them head-on, you'll only see two. That's normal!) Select the blue one, and drag it up or down.

It's important to use the arrows rather than simply the "g" key. This will ensure that your sim isn't crooked.

TIP: Use a combination of all the points I showed above to get a more "realistic"-looking sim. If you only manipulate one or two, you'll end up with some very odd proportions.

Here's an example of what I was able to achieve using height manipulations. The sim in the middle, Nina, is the default height.

Once you have your sim at their desired height, save your file!!! (In case something goes wrong later, or you don't want to add more outfits, you won't have to redo it.)

Adding Additional Outfits

One of the biggest benefits of a custom rig is being able to ensure there is zero clipping by using the exact outfit and hair that your sim is going to wear. But your sim isn't going to be wearing the same outfit in every picture. And what if they're wearing black? Or a dress? Something that makes it hard to see the joints in blender? That's where having multiple outfits on the same rig is helpful.

Export your 2nd (or 3rd, etc.) outfit from SimRipper. This should follow the same process you did the first time. You can choose which outfit to export by clicking on the dropdown menu labeled "outfit".

Save the file as a DAE as normal. If you're saving it in the same folder as the first one (and you haven't deleted the first one), you'll have to name it something different, or put it in it's own subfolder. I tend to name mine something like "[sim name] - Formal" to make it obvious which is which.

Open your custom rig in blender. Go to "file > import > collada (DAE)" and select your new outfit.

This is exactly like importing it the first time, so you can follow the exact same steps. The only different is that now you will have multiple of them.

If you didn't rename the DAE itself, your sidebar should look something like this. (You'll only have two, and also may or may not have the glass versions, depending on if your sim has transparency on any of their outfit.)

Rename those little sub-files into something more descriptive, so you know what you're looking for.

Looking at your sim, it might look a little wild, because all the outfits are overlapping. Just toggle the eye icons so that only the outfit you want to be working with is showing.

Repeat as many times as you want to have as many outfits as you need. (Feel free to delete any outfits you don't need after using them, etc.)

TIP: Have a "naked" version of your sim (aka, them in a swimsuit or underwear) for easy selection of joints and easier viewing of pose details. This is especially helpful if your sim is wearing something that obscures part of the rig (ex: a floor-length dress) or a dark color that hides the joints.

You did it! Now save your file, take a break, get a snack and a drink, and get to making poses! (Make sure you save a version with your sim unposed and at the correct height so you can use it as a base for every single pose. That is the whole point of this, after all!)

(For clarification I refer to the animal characters as mobians even though that's like technically not canon anymore I think lol)

•Common headcanon, but showing hands (and feet but esp hands) is a big deal to mobians. They only show their hands/feet to family, extremely close friends, and romantic relationships.

•^Showing hands in any kind of relationship other than biological family is a particularly important emotional base to get to and shows deep trust

•^It used to be abnormal to show any hand at all, but now it’s mostly just the palm area (basically fingerless gloves are fine, for feet sandals are probably okay now but they’d need to stay well on the heel if that makes sense)

•^This was weird in the 50s/60s so if Shadow sees someone with fingerless gloves he’s briefly scandalized like a victorian man seeing a miniskirt lmao (ik he was raised on the ARK anyways but I hc he would’ve read and been taught about it probably)

•^Also idk about this one but maybe mobians started covering their hands in an effort to be closer to normal humans, so that’s why showing their actual hands became a sign of closeness/trust?

•Mobians are basically humans that mutated a long time ago because of radiation/pollution/chemicals/fallout/etc or something (kinda sorta similar to how in Archie they came from like,, a gene bomb making animals evolve really fast and humans devolve?? I don’t want to ask stupid questions or anything but is there SA/RP/NCON stuff between ur wars and ur cia? Ik its a popular LU headcannon for wars, and it feels very implied in some of your fics (one of the FH9 spin offs, I think) but I also don’t wanna read too deep into this or say something’s there when it isn’t. If this is a major plot point or smth you can’t answer bcuz if spoilers just don’t reply and I’ll figure it out :p

It’s not a stupid question at all, and the short answer is yes.

The severity of the situation and also like, the circumstances are very different depending on which series it is. For example in FH9 Wars and Cia were actually together as a couple for a bit where in some of the other things I’ve written they do not even know each other and have met like twice. For the most part I try to keep it as more of an implied thing because, with the exception of FH9, the interactions between them are never super relevant to the plot, but it is there, and that’s how I meant it to be read.

I know it’s a bit of a sensitive topic for a lot of people, so even though it’s only been implied and not outright stated, I try to post trigger warnings at the start of the chapters/fics that imply it, and also (unless it’s super plot relevant) I try to write it in a way where if you don’t want to read into that, you can kinda skip over it or imagine they’re talking about something else. I know a good portion of this fandom is on the younger side and because most of my fics are rated T, I feel like if I wrote anything more than just heavily implying what happened I should move the rating up, if that makes sense…?

One thing really important to me is representation in writing, being able to read a book or watch a show and see someone who’s gone through something similar to you and be able to feel seen through that character. Male SA survivors are something I rarely see in media, and without talking too much about my private life, I personally would’ve loved to have seen more characters healing from traumas growing up, I think it would’ve really helped me when I was younger. I tend to write a lot about my own experiences and traumas, it’s really helpful actually- And this is just another thing I’ve kinda thrown unto Wars, although this one has a lot more canon ‘backing’ than a lot of my other headcanons and I know this is a headcanon a lot of other people have as well

The whole canon situation between those two was honestly a bit insane for a nintendo game, like just the wiki thing about her that shows up on google is kinda crazy. Like I’m not sure what the hell nintendo meant their whole dynamic to be but playing the game it made me uncomfortable as hell

So yeah, I have this headcanon too, I’m not sure if I’ll ever write a detailed fic about it, that would be a lot for me mentally I think. The most I’ll ever get into it is probably having him say the words ‘I was assaulted’, but nothing more than that.

Full disclosure I wrote this out in my car twenty minutes before class starts so sorry if parts of this make no sense but TL;DR: Yes in my fics Wars was assaulted, I don’t wanna trigger people because I know that’s a bit of a darker headcanon, I think Male SA survivor rep is important, and yeah I think that summarizes everything 👍
