are there any fan works that have made you rethink one of your own characters?

no lol. however allow me to go on a tangent for a minute.

i have been on tumblr for a very long time. i have been in fandoms. i have made my fanworks. ive seen Stuff. so i know how people react to fandoms and characters they love. which is (and i mean this with no judgment! and even love!!!): fans add their own flavor to the characters, sometimes enhancing them, but also, sometimes, making the character. completely. unrecognizable

again, no judgment!!!!! ive done it myself!!! often!!!! all the time!!!! you can search for it here on my tumblr!!!! i've done it and i love doing it!!!! hashtag my blorbo now!!!! HOWEVER. when i was making ISAT, i did not think it would blow up like this. but i am someone who prepares for every eventuality, so i did think ok. well. what if it does blow up like this. and people. make. my little guys. from my heart. my bosom. absolutely. unrecognizable

all this to say that if you're making a project that could become Tumblrized(affectionate), or even any kind of project: i highly recommend writing down what your characters mean to you. why you made them like this. what made you go down this route. why did you make this project in the first place. what does this Mean To You And You Alone. so that if your character becomes Unrecognizable. you can still remember what you put in them first. and people can Tumblrize to their hearts content and you can be happy and the people can be happy and we can all hold hands having a different version of the blorbo in our brains

In your opinion, how do you keep a protagonist as engaging/interesting as an antagonist w/o making the latter seem too flat/boring in comparison?

anon, ive been sitting on this forever because ive thought about this a loooooong time and the simple truth is this is very hard to do

unfortunately, theres nothing you can do about making an antagonist less interesting. you can make the most boring, flat, one-note, mwahaha im going to kill people because i love kicking baby animals piece of shit man, but the moment you make the mistake of making him conventionally attractive, hes going to have people who love sleazebags flock toward him. i say he because this sort of character is always a guy people love guy villains. thats all there is to it but hey, the fun part is trying anyway, right? the challenge comes from the fact that we spend a lot of time with the protagonists of whatever story we end up with. familiarity breeds exhaustion or indifference with that in mind, regardless of how you go about, the main thing that you need to make a good protagonist is you need to feel REAL REAL strongly about them and their place in your story. you can love this blorbo or hate this little bastard, but you have to feel it. it doesnt matter if other characters have their own separate stories and having stories about other characters that have nothing to do with the main character can even help flesh things out and make the audience appreciate the main character more! at the end of the day, the bones of the story have to be built with the protagonist in mind. if you dont like those bones and feel nothing about that character, its going to become very obvious to the audience youd rather be writing about someone else additionally, you can go the ryoko kui method and make EVERYONE a little bit of a freak, which i highly recommend i dont have a solid formula for you at the end of the day, but i do think you need to approach any story with a real level of sincerity that you channel through your focal point character. everything else will fall into place

it’s unfortunate that (some) people in fandom spaces are starting to get too comfortable complaining and being rude to writers and artists who create contents they personally don’t like (“why are you making this character a top when he’s obviously a bottom? omg do you even understand his character?” “I’m so sick of seeing fan art and fanfic where this character is portrayed as a sadist when he’s actually misunderstood in my opinions, therefore anyone who disagrees with me is wrong and should be shamed” just to name a few I’ve seen) instead of curating their own fandom experiences by engaging only with contents they do like.

you want more fics where (x) is written in this specific way? either write one yourself or politely expressing your opinion about how you hope there will be more fics where (x) is written in this specific way instead of making fandom a toxic place by being rude to writers and artists who dare make contents that are not to your Personal Liking.

if the universe does not revolve around you, strangers and fandom spaces don’t have to cater exclusively to your personal preferences either.

Unfortunately, it's gonna have to be cruel and unusual punishment for now :') This AU works differently from my other ones in the sense that this one has a bit of a running story to it, so I can't tell you much without spoiling things.

The basic premise is that this incident happens and everyone has to navigate how they cope with it, Metal included. Some find their way through, while others continue to spiral downwards to rock bottom.
