Who are your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from 10 differents media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them?

Ooh this is a complicated one. Just one character per media? I'll try my best

Percy Jackson from the Percy Jackson series. Genuinely one of the best protagonists I have ever met. I love how funny he is and how he never backs down from a fight, and watching him grow into the hero he is today will forever be one of my fondest memories 💙

From Haikyuu, I have to choose Hinata. I may kin Kenma more, but it's impossible not to fall in love with Hinata's journey. He truly inspires me

From Batman... this one will be difficult. If this was a simple top 10 favorite characters, at least 3 would be from the batman comics, so choosing just one is nearly impossible. Instead of going for the protagonist again, I'll say Tim Drake. I kin him more and his origin story is funnier

From MHA, Bakugou Katsuki. I always have a soft spot for the assholes because when they go through a character arc and emerge as better people I can say I believed in them from the start. And look at my boy now!! Look at him go!!!

The Broken Hearts Part VI

Hello loyal readers of TBH! There's not many of you, and that's definitely my fault because I take so long to write 😬 Thankfully, @celias makes sure to remind me to post!! I hope you enjoy the next installment and you have as much fun reading it as I did writing it!

The next morning, Alex and Ella were training together at The Institute. The entire ordeal of Friday night seemed to have settled, like dust in an attic. Gone was the rush and stress of understanding what had happened. The matter seemed less pressing, even if there was a threat placed on the Institute.

That didn’t mean, however, that there weren’t any meetings held at The Institute. There was one right now, as a matter of fact. One Ella and Alex had been planning on eavesdropping in on, however, they got too bored to continue listening. Neither could be expected to sit still for long periods of time and of the little information they had heard, it was evident that it wouldn’t be of use to them.

“Maybe we should have stayed a while longer.” Alex said, blocking the blow she’d just dealt him. They were both training with the staff, which Alex insisted they should get familiar with, even though Ella thought they were pointless. They were just large and heavy pieces of wood; when would they be of service when running head first into danger?

“What are you talking about? We stayed for five whole minutes. That’s more than enough.”

“For us. Most people can pay attention for longer than that.”

“Well, I guess we're not most people, then.”

“You’re right. We’re superior.”

Ella nodded in agreement.

Alex switched to the offensive and Ella had to move quickly to block him. His blow was powerful, and sent pain up her arms.

“This is pointless.” She said, “The staff is big and heavy. Why can’t we train with swords?”

“Because,” Alex said, “What if we run out of weapons during a battle, Ella? What if we need to improvise and fight with a piece of wood, only to realize we haven’t trained with them well enough, and die? What do we do then, Ella? Charm our way into survival?”

“You’re insufferable, do you know that?”

“If you hate me so much, why did you choose me as your parabatai?” Alex demanded.

“Because,” Ella said, annoyed, “you’re too idiotic to survive on you own.”

“Respect your elders, you child.”

Ella rolled her eyes and bent down to dodge Alex’s staff. She seized her opportunity and used the staff to take Alex’s feet out from under him, while he was unbalanced. He fell to the floor with a thud.

“I win.” Ella said with a grin.

“Congratulations.” Alex said, sarcastically.

“Obliged.” Ella bowed. “Now, since I win, I get to choose what we train with.”

Alex exhaled. “Can we at least get a break first?”

Ella didn’t realize they were both panting, or that her face was coated with a layer of sweat until that moment.

“If we must.” Ella said, sitting cross-legged beside Alex, calming down her breathing.

“Have you thought about it?”

“About what?”

“Last night. Belphegor.”

Ella closed her eyes and wiped her forehead with her sleeve. “That's all I’ve been thinking about.”

“Me too.” Alex said.

“I’m trying to convince myself it’s all wrong.” Ella said, pulling out the dagger James gave her a couple of years ago for her birthday. She ran her finger down the face of the blade, where little herons were gliding across. “That we are being dramatic, and that it is probably a Fae or vampire or someone with a score to settle.”

Alex didn’t say anything. Ella turned to look at him.

“Do you think it could be Belphegor?”

Alex closed his eyes, his Adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed. “I don’t know what to think. All of this is strange and… wrong. This is the sort of thing we saw when we were children, Elle. We used to be the ones playing in the library while our parents and older siblings racked their brains over what to do. And now we are the ones racking our brains.” Alex turned his head to look her in the eyes with his striking green eyes. “When did we grow up, Ellie?”

Ella stabbed the tip of her dagger on the wooden floor. “I don’t know, Alex.”

Alex furrowed his eyebrows. “I still feel like a child. I’ve always been ‘the child’. In my family, I was the baby. I was always too young. And now I’m not.”

Now it was Ella’s turn to close her eyes. “I guess that’s a problem only we’d face. Us and the twins, and Jesper. Because we were always little compared to our siblings, and now we’re not so little. But we never realized it because…Well, being the littlest was all we ever knew.”

The two were silent for a moment. Then, out of nowhere, Alex got to his feet. He looked down at Ella and offered her a hand.

“What shall we train?” Alex asked.

Ella took his hand and was practically flung to her feet by Alex.

“Sword play.” she said with a smirk.

By the time they finished training, it was well into the afternoon. After washing up, Ella made her way to the library, where she could hear the lull of voices coming from inside. Alex was already inside and Jesper had come at some point for a visit. They were both on the floor, playing with little Caspara, who looked up when she came in, her lips stretching into a toothy grin.

Ella swooped her up and kissed her nose. Unlike Owen Herondale’s blue eyes, Caspara’s eyes were bi-colored; they were mostly James’ dark gold, but the outer areas were Cordelia’s black eyes. They were striking and Ella thought they were the most incredibly beautiful eyes she ever did see. Caspara also had James’ crow black hair, but her facial features resembled Cordelia’s in many ways; she had her nose, eye shape and lips.

“Who’s your favorite human in the whole world?” Ella said.

Caspara giggled and put a hand on Ella’s cheek.

Jesper's jaw fell open, “you traitor!”

Ella smirked. “We ladies must stick together.” She sat down with Caspara and looked at the boys. “Is there a specific reason you came, Jes?”

“Actually, yes.” Jesper said. “I was summoned by Alex through a fire message.”

Ella looked at Alex, confused.

“I had an idea after we split up.” Alex said.

“That’s new.” Ella said.

Alex ignored the insult. “We might know who is behind these attacks but we have literally zero proof that it could be Belphegor.”

“Really?” Ella said sarcastically.

“We need help—”

“Mentally or in terms of our situation?”

Alex rolled his grass green eyes.

“I overheard Tessa and Will talking about a freak occurrence a couple of months ago.”

“So? Why am I here?” Jesper said.

“Will you lot let me finish? It was a mist-like substance that surrounded the two shadowhunters, but it left just as quickly as it came. That didn’t stop the shadowhunters from already becoming drowsy. The pressure went down almost enough that they would have been rendered unconscious, had the mist not disappeared.”

“You do make a point.” Said Ella. “But if you wanted someone’s brain power, why call Jesper? He’s better than nothing.”

“Ouch.” Said Jesper.

“Sorry. If it makes you feel any better, you’re more intelligent than you give yourself credit for.”

It was true; maybe if Jesper didn’t spend so much time playing the light-hearted and foolish friend, they would be able to see through his façade. There was more to Jesper than what meets the eye, that’s for sure.

“Anyway, why didn’t anybody look into it? Surely that’s something they should be worrying about.”

“I don’t know. All I know is that we are well acquainted with the Nephilim patrolling that night. One of them was my cousin Thomas, the other was…” Alex looked at Jesper.

“Jesper?!” Ella asked, incredulously.

“No! God, I meant Alastair.”

“No way.” Jesper said. “I know what you’re going to ask, and I won’t be a part of it.”

“Please, Jes.”

“No. Alastair will know if I’m lying to him, because I was an idiot child and I picked up half of my character traits from him and now he knows me like the back of his hand.”

“Can’t you just change how you lie?”

“Do you think I haven’t tried that? Sadly, I’m a horrible actor as well, so I’m stuck with myself.”

“Listen, Jesper, we need to know and Alastair is your brother and as good as your father. Thomas has been with him longer than you’ve been alive. If anyone can ask and make it seem authentic, it’s you.”

“But Alex, if Alastair is going to know he’s lying, maybe it’s a bad idea.”

“We have to try.” Alex said. “I could ask Thomas as a cousin, but he’s not one to talk. He’ll tell me everything and nothing at the same time.”

“And you think Alastair will spill his life story to me?” Jesper said.

Ella’s eye caught movement outside the library windows and sat up straight once she looked out. “It doesn’t matter.” she said. “They’re both here.”

Alex and Jesper looked up and sure enough, Thomas and Alastair were talking to James and Cordelia in The Institute courtyard.

“Bloody.” Jesper said.

“Hello, stranger!” Jesper said.

Alastair pressed his lips together. “What did you do?”

Jesper let his jaw drop. “How rude. I don’t see you in almost a decade—”

“We saw each other last night.” Alastair amended.

“And this is how you greet me?”

Cordelia reached over and ruffled her younger brother’s hair. “Poor Jes. At least pretend to be happy, Alastair.”

Alastair rolled his eyes.

“Jamie, I have your offspring.” Ella said. Caspara giggled and held her hands out to James.

James took his daughter and turned to Cordelia, “That reminds me, we should head back inside before Owen can do something catastrophic.” Cordelia nodded and they both left.

“And that is why we don’t have children.” Thomas said, shaking his head.

“So,” Jesper said, trying to act casual and failing miserably. “Remember a while back when you two were attacked by some weird mist thing?”

Thomas furrowed his eyebrows. “Erm, yes.”

“That must have been horrible.” Jesper shook his head. “I can’t even imagine how it must have been. It must have been a debilitating color, like black or something—”

Alastair whipped his head to look at them. “What are you doing?”

“We just wanted to know about the experience.”

“Why.” It wasn’t so much a question as it was a demand.

Jesper shrugged. “We were worried.”

Alastair squinted his eyes. “You were so worried you waited a month after the event occurred to ask us about it?”

Jesper nodded. “We didn’t want to bother you at first, but we just got so worried, we wanted to ask you now.”

Alastair blinked. “Do I look like an idiot to you?”

Jesper looked at Alex as if to say, I told you so.

“You didn’t think you were the only ones to connect both of these incidents together, did you?”

“Alastair,” Thomas said.

Alastair didn’t change his facial expression, but he changed his tone of voice and word choice slightly. “Look, I don’t know what you are all scheming, but you needn’t worry about this. It’s not your battle to fight.”

There’s the phrase they’d heard they’re entire lives: “Don’t worry, we’ll handle it.”

The older shadowhunters, both their parents and older siblings, never really thought them capable of much. They saw their younger siblings as childish and in need of protection. Ella hated coming into a room while her parents were talking, and having them break off suddenly and pretend they had been sitting in silence before she came in.

Ella wanted to know what was going on, but she was always told not to worry, and that the Enclave would handle it. It felt like walking in a dark room.

One can only take so much coddling before they suffocate.

“Alastair, Thomas, it’s true that we don’t ask out of concern. It’s just that we simply want to know. We feel as though we are stumbling around in the dark, trying to piece together what happened that night. We’re collecting little crumbs of information, hoping we’ll understand even a tiny bit of the entire picture. The boys won’t admit it, but truly, we are still apprehensive from the night at the ballroom, and we simply ask to know about what the Enclave knows as well.” Ella said.

Alex and Jesper gawked at her, the former trying to tell her to be quiet with his eyes.

Thomas and Alastair, however, exchanged a glance. “We can tell you what we know,” Thomas said. “Though you must understand that not all of the information is reliable and should be taken with a grain of salt.”

“And you have to promise that once you receive this information,” Alastair said. “You wouldn’t do anything stupid with it.”

“We promise.” They all said in unison, equally eager.

“All right then,” Thomas began. “The freak occurrence could be blamed on an Enenra demon. Even though they are native to Japan, they could have easily landed in London through a mistake in realm travel. The smoke had a tiring effect on us, different from the one in the ballroom, therefore, we aren’t able to remember much of what happened between the time the smoke appeared and the time we got away.”

“Did you call for backup?” Ella asked. The real question she wanted to ask was where the attack occurred, but Thomas would know that she’d only be asking so that they could go and take a look for themselves so they had to disguise the question.

“We were too far from the institute.”

Ella made a show of widening her eyes, trying to look afraid. “Do you think it will happen again, Thomas? I don’t want to get caught in the smoke and be killed.”

“Don’t worry. It was near Blackthorn manor. As long as you don’t pass by there, you shouldn’t have to stress.” Thomas said with a half smile.

Bingo.

“Well, that’s a relief.” she said. “It’s far from anywhere we’d ever go.”

Ella was a good actress. She learned in life that if she wanted to know something, the only way to get it was to act innocent and child-like. She had to act the way people wanted her to act.

Sometimes, however, Ella did wonder. She wondered if it was her cunning deceptions that tricked people into telling her what she wanted, or if it was because of her hell-bound gift.

She seized that thought and shoved it far down in her mind, somewhere even her wildest figments of imagination grew dull. She’d go insane if she thought about her warlock powers for more than a minute.

“Well, we really appreciate you telling us about this.” Ella continued. “We were concerned for you.”

“This doesn’t mean we’ll tell you everything.” Alastair said. “And don’t even think about cornering Tom when he’s by himself. Just because he’s kind, it doesn’t mean he’ll tell you anything other than this.”

“Yes, this is strictly for safety purposes.” Thomas said.

“Absolutely.” Alastair said.

It turns out Ella may be a good actress, but not good enough to fool Thomas and Alastair into thinking their motivations were purely for safety purposes. Thankfully, they didn’t seem to catch on to the location reveal, nor would they report them to the Enclave. If they were lucky, they’d just look out for them.

Ella, Alex and Jesper all nodded. “Of course,” Alex said. “Safety purposes.”
