Hate it when j&h adaptations give Jekyll a female love interest, like bitch, he HAS a love interest who is introduced on the first page, and his name is MR UTTERSON THE LAWYER.
#well technically it's “gabriel john utterson' but those are the first 4 words of the book#my random stuff#dr jekyll and mr hyde#jekyll and hyde#and on a more serious note-#it tells me that the adaptation understood nothing about the novella#because the queer subtext* is almost domtext#*and yes i say subtext as opposed to coding because#Stevenson's purpose was to oppose the repressive victorian social structures#and the unspoken social codes and unnecessary laws surrounding what people could and couldn't do#and; yeah sure there were plenty of those for straight relationships#but doubly so for queer ones#queerness is SO important to this novella even though it's never overtly mentioned#edit: just saw a post that reminded me of this one and I'd like to add:#adaptations that give jekyll a female LI seem to make her ONLY a love interest without any development#and usually they only exist to get raped or killed by Hyde#it's. not great.

Obviously it has ethical implications but I do love the idea of X6 hanging around post-Institute and dropping Danse’s shutdown code in the middle of conversations. As a power play.
Like, oh that’s an excellent point, sir, but what if instead you went night night for awhile?
#this is a joke of course because there’s not really a way for x6 to find out what it is#i’m assuming the ‘go to sleep now’ code is different from the recall code#also it would kill danse to not be in control of his body#and not in a funny way#but it’s funny as long as you don’t think about it#he doesn’t do it to curie because he would feel bad and he doesn’t like remembering he has a conscience#fallout 4#fallout#fo4#x6 88#x6-88#x6#x688#how do people tag this guy’s name#danse#paladin danse#danse fo4#danse fallout#danse fallout 4

my experience reading this sentence:
Sous la pergola courait en liseron sur toutes choses et sur les six infirmes le silence particulier des comploteurs
makes sense. this is a full sentence.
Sous la pergola courait en liseron sur toutes choses et sur les six infirmes le silence particulier des comploteurs fleuri du pavillon pâle
okay, maybe this makes sense? the silence particular to conspirators [which had] blossomed from the pale pavilion? kind of weird though...maybe it's related to the next part instead.
Sous la pergola courait en liseron sur toutes choses et sur les six infirmes le silence particulier des comploteurs fleuri du pavillon pâle et multiple
what
Sous la pergola courait en liseron sur toutes choses et sur les six infirmes le silence particulier des comploteurs fleuri du pavillon pâle et multiple des questions
WHAT????
richard coward translates this as
Beneath the pergola, convolvulus-like, the peculiar silence of the plotters spread over everything and over the six invalids, and the many questions that no one dared utter, and which waited to be asked for the breath of the bravest amongst them, fluttered above them like as many pale flags. (New Penguin Parallel Text Short Stories in French, p 115)
he also has an endnote after "courait" which reads
The subject of this verb is le silence particulier. Boulanger uses the inversion to convey stylistically the all-embracing secrecy of the meeting.
this is making me cuckoo. obviously the subject of courait is le silence particulier. what else could it possibly be!! that's the least confusing thing about the sentence!
what is actually confusing is everything that happens after le silence particulier. fleuri is a past participle which i would think is acting as an adjective because there's no auxiliary. what's it modifying? silence? are we saying [le silence [particulier des comploteurs] [fleuri du pavillon pâle]]? and where is the pavillon pâle coming from? this is the first use of the word pavillon. the translator takes it as figurative language, which maybe it is, but i can't figure out what it's doing in the sentence because...
what the fuck is going on with multiple? if it's an adjective modifying pavillon, then shouldn't it (and pavillon!) be plural? like by definition?? the translator has clearly interpreted it this way by the inclusion of "many pale flags". however, i originally interpreted pavillon not as flag (flags have not been mentioned in the story at all so far) but as outbuilding, because on the previous page the pergola was described as having "murs aveugles" which the translator thought was odd because pergolas don't have walls, let alone windowless ones, so he thought maybe it was referring to an outbuilding. also, if multiple is somehow modifying pavillon despite the fact that they're both singular, everything up to and including multiple is a complete sentence. what is des questions and everything after it doing? that's a completely new noun phrase. what verb phrase is it part of?
at one point i was thinking, could multiple be a verb? but it would have to be a verb in the 3rd person singular present indicative (or i guess subjunctive), so it can't parallel courait. there are present indicative verbs in this sentence, but they're both in the subordinate clause after "des questions". the subject would either have to be le silence (which doesn't make sense because courait also has silence as the subject and is in the imparfait) or le pavillon, which doesn't make sense because there's an et in between pavillon and multiple.
i can't say the translation is incorrect because i don't understand the original sentence. but if i start from the translation and try to work backward, the biggest problem i run into isn't "many pale flags" (maybe le pavillon pâle et multiple could be a plural noun phrase stylistically?) but rather "fluttered". he's added a completely new main verb that doesn't exist in the original. and at first i was assuming that he was getting fluttered from fleuri somehow, but i can't make that make sense either semantically or syntactically which maybe is a skill issue, i don't know!!
if we try to line up the correspondences between original and translation by color:
Sous la pergola courait en liseron sur toutes choses et sur les six infirmes le silence particulier des comploteurs fleuri du pavillon pâle et multiple des questions que l'on n'ose poser et qui attendent pour tomber le souffle du plus courageux.
Beneath the pergola, convolvulus-like, the peculiar silence of the plotters spread over everything and over the six invalids, and the many questions that no one dared utter, and which waited to be asked for the breath of the bravest amongst them, fluttered above them like as many pale flags.
it does seem like fluttered and fleuri have to be related somehow. maybe fleuri is actually supposed to be fleurit (most of the story is in the passé simple)...but if des questions is the subject, it would have to be fleurirent because questions is plural. and it still seems pretty weird not to have a conjuction in the french (he's added "and" in the translation). and where did the "above them" come from in "fluttered above them"? i am losing my mind. what am i missing.
#french#this book is riddled with typos so maybe there's just a word missing or something???#that footnote is killing me though. i read the sentence and was like what the fuck? but never fear. there is a footnote.#and then the footnote was like '2+2=4 btw.' THANK YOU???? I'M AWARE?????#there are several other places in the book where i saw the translation and was like i don't know about that...#so i also don't have total confidence in the translator. because there were sentences i thought i could interpret in the french#and then saw his translation and was like i think the translator is full of shit actually#plus the way he describes one of the stories in the introduction made me question whether he understood what was happening#in that story. like maybe he was just trying to avoid spoilers? but also maybe he completely confused the characters??#so if i trusted the translation i would be like okay either there's a typo in the french or there's something happening stylistically#that is unfamiliar to me and over my head. but as it is i'm like what are you smoking richard coward#and also maybe there is a typo in the french? or maybe we're both bad at french. HARD 2 SAY#my posts#syntax#crossing my fingers one of my francophone followers will roll up and just casually drop another french expression cheat code#into the replies. like 'oh yeah this is [standard literary construction xyz]'#le temps de [inf] all over again#and i'll be like my hero 😍

just finished undertale. ok i see the vision. i now understand yall's Sans-to-Benrey obsession pipeline. and the Papyrus-to-Tommy Coolatta pipeline
#undertale#hlvrai#hlvrai2#benrey#tommy coolatta#papyrus#benry#hlvrai benry#sans undertale#sans#undertale sans#undertale spoilers#i loved Papyrus so much and the whole time i was playing i was like hmm he reminds me of someone...? TOMMY. HE REMINDS ME. OF TOMMY.#i played pacifist but i saw how if u kill every1 n spare Papyrus Sans tells him every1 else is on a vacation bc truth would be too hard#file under: lies Gordon would tell Tommy if anything happened to Sunkist or his dad Gman#we wanna protect Tommy but on the other hand. the horrors r everywhere & Tommy go ham with a gun (he's terrified & acting on pure instinct)#(even tho Tommy has definitely faced his share of horrors in contrast to how Papyrus's loved ones try to shelter him from bloodshed)#i wanna write a paper psychoanalyzing Sans and Benrey in comparison to each other SOOOOO badly#it's been a hot minute since i last watched hlvrai (have seen it at least 4 times but not recently. did watch bbvrai live tho!)#im so extremely tired rn so i can't form proper thoughts :( but like:#they both have unfathomable otherworldly power and knowledge of their respective universes#but u wouldn't know it bc they're presented as just some chill guy who likes to make jokes and Vibe man#sike! they're a being of elderitch levels of power#they both act in accordance to game code but Sans can control parts of it (can see the timeline) while Benrey is much more subject to it#in some ways they are the antithesis of each other's motives but also contain the same vibes (all-powerful guy laidback n funny final boss)#Sans is judgment but doesn't interfere with the timeline. Benrey takes action that's “i knew this was gonna happen”#Benrey is fought as the final villain whereas Sans is arguably the final hero fight#anyways THEIR VIBES ARE BOTH SO !!!!!!!!!!!!!#idk if they'd be besties or mortal enemies#they can bond over being “unserious” (but they both take their true jobs very seriously. security guard and judgment bringer respectively)

I think the biggest tell of what the atmosphere of a resident evil game is is who the enemies are. in re 1-3 it's zombies, your friends and coworkers and neighbors who have been infected. you play as a cop betrayed by your superiors- the people behind everything are the police department, the city government, a local pharmaceutical company. especially in re1 where the events are confined to the mansion- you personally know many of the enemies as the rest of your team turns and your boss betrays you.
then re4. and 5. and 6. and 8. the enemies are foreigners. they come at you in huge hoards and you've never known them as anything other than hostile. you are now The Government. you are rescuing the president's daughter. the bad guys are Spanish cultists. you gun down infected villages without a thought. you demolish towns in Africa. 6 is a whole different thing. the main point is you have no connection to the location, to the people you're killing, to the people orchestrating everything.
I think that's why re7 was such a big deal and a return to re's roots. you're at a family home in Louisiana, an hours long drive from your home. you're looking for your wife. every single enemy you face was a person like you, taken by this family and turned into a monster. you yourself are infected with the same virus.
it really is just. very telling about what the narrative is trying to do based on who the common enemies in the game are. like the molded are people who have been experimented on, missing people with family's who have no idea what happened to them. you are in the same situation as them. and then re4 you're an elite government agent willingly entering your situation in order to rescue your president's daughter. you enter with the mindset of killing whoever gets in your way. there is no reluctance, no emphasizing with the people you're killing.
#this is a very long post to say the original core of resident evil was fundamentally the community#playing as chris or jill or even becca (tho we dunno if we'd put re0 in the same category as 1+2+3) you are a local.#you are a local cop. you are there because of an increase in violence which u assume are isolated incidences#you KNOW the people youre killing. you are the one betrayed by your boss. by the entire department after you survive.#and then raccoon city happens and for jill its HER town#she decided to stay when chris left#and then she has to see everyone else in raccoon city die#and when she does escape everyone else there is wiped out by the bomb#and then for leon it's his coworkers#claire is probably the least connected but shes still fundamentally connecting with the people who have turned#and then 4 is just. a completely different vibe. same with code veronica i think#and both revelations lol#but anyways. just says something about the direction re went. from a mansion to a city to international threats#confluence.txt#evil residence

Mama looked over at her with a big smile and pointed to Uncle Moon’s tummy and then signed ‘baby’.

I wrote a short fic about Jedidiah Wicker, but it feels too short to put up on ao3 so I'm sharing it here instead (writing under the cut)
Jedidiah’s gently holding a beetle. It’s smaller than most of the bugs he finds, but in his eyes it deserves the chance for a better life just as much as any beetle he finds scurrying through the room he shares with his brothers. Away from stinky loud teenage boys.
It doesn’t understand, however, that he’s trying to help it, and keeps trying to get through his fingers or crawl out of his cupped hands. He whispers little assurances to it, promising that he'll bring it to a better life, that if it stays inside, someone will crush it, but it doesn’t understand him.
He releases it a few feet outside, and it disappears into the grass. It will never know that he saved it. It will always be scared of him. This makes him sad. He wishes that he could talk to bugs, so it could understand why he took it outside.
When he walks back inside, Joshua and Jocelyn are still sitting on the floor talking about whatever teenagers talk about, Joshua looks up at him.
“What were you doing out there, buddy?” He asks, trying to sound nice.
“I was bringing out a little bug I found in our room, so it could be free,” Jed explains.
Joshua makes a face that he can’t quite interpret, “It would have been easier just to kill it.”
“I know,” Jed responds plainly. He wants to tell him that that defeats the point, but Joshua doesn’t understand that even little bugs deserve a chance to have a better life.
#spoilers in the tags (so don't read further if you haven't listened to season 4 yet)#I wrote this while listening to The Chapel by Madilyn Mei on loop#I feel like that's an important detail#(It's a very Jed coded song)#anyways I had a thought about him but didn't know how to explain it normally so I wrote this instead#He deserves better than he has#hell he deserves the world#I feel normal feelings about him.#hello from the hallowoods#hfth#writing#Jedidiah Wicker#(my baby)#I was gonna say it's kind of darkly ironic that the guy suggesting that he kills the bug is the guy who got murdered for harassing a dog#but Joshua didn't actually harass the dog#it was mostly Blythe who did that Josh was just there#but whatever
