Beneath the dying leaves, the last warmth of autumn lingered fondly in waves of honey hair and eyes as green as spring. A woman sat cross-legged on a flat rock, sharpening a wickedly curved dagger. The cape around her shoulders pooled on the stone like fresh blood. The hissing of the blade against the whetstone mingled with the chatter of the birds, adding its strange music to the forest’s song.
“Jenny Redcape.”
She raised her head at the echo of her name. It had been so long since anyone had spoken it, she’d almost thought they’d forgotten her, that she’d become a dim memory of grandparents droning on about the Old Ones while bored children played. None of the tales ever said what happened to one of her kind when they were no longer of use to the world. She didn’t know either, and now she wouldn’t find out. She couldn’t decide if she was relieved or disappointed.
As the last syllable faded, the world around Jenny dissolved, resurrecting itself in a shiver of closely spaced pine trees. They stood watch over the still form in their midst, aging knights clad in dull plated armor, casting fragments of sunlight on the ground like golden sparks.
The smell of blood tickled her nose, sharp and metallic. It pooled around the girl like a crimson halo, emphasizing the unpleasant angles of her out-thrown limbs. Empty dark eyes stared at the crowns of the pines above her, shrouded in part by long black hair that had tousled free of its braids. Red roses decorated the tatters of her stained blouse, sewn by a loving hand. The same hand, perhaps, that had woven the wicker basket that lay smashed in the grass nearby.
Jenny sank into a crouch, slipping off her cape. Shaking it out, she let it flutter, oh so gently, across the warm blood. Deeper, the fabric sank into the puddle, until the red darkened to black. When the cape was drenched from end to end, she returned it to her shoulders. As it settled against her body, her eyes flared crimson, and an echo of that ghostly light twined from her dripping cape in smoky tendrils of seeking. Enveloped in the scent of spilled blood, Jenny followed.

Conversational Therapy is a debut collection of challenging and unusual short stories and one-act plays.
In A KEEPSAKE MEMORY, a wrongfully imprisoned girl tries to escape the confines of an abandoned mental asylum and the treacherous hands of a psychotic doctor placed in charge of keeping her there. In ALLIGATOR RESORT, a SoHo prototype living a Bohemian lifestyle gets more than he bargains for on a family retreat to the great outdoors when a cloaked madman unleashes an army of lab engineered alligators on the slacker's family cottage. In PSYCHIATRIST'S PSYCHIATRIST, a distressed woman interviews with a new psychiatrist after her old one commits suicide. In THE LAST LAUGH, an excessively overweight comedian looks back on his arduous journey through life while presently navigating his claustrophobic condominium, the building's smallish elevators, and the lobby's makeshift comic stage.
These and many more exhilarating pieces full of suspense, biting social commentary and black humor from the darkest depths of human psyche await the reader. Unrelenting, surreal, and even occasionally twisted tales which, more often than not, have a ring of truth and relatability outside the falsity and the make believe.

Oh shit!! Your post reminded me of the existence of the Chaos Walking books and how much I loved them when I was younger… I should reread them if you think they hold up!
oh man YES, I highly recommend rereading them! like, if you've read them before you already know about the Todd's POV being written in dialect thing, which I often think is the only barrier people would have to really getting into those books, so you'd be good to go. but yeah, they REALLY held up for me. I think I Ioved them even more this time around than when I was 17 when I read them the first time because they're quite serious books and the themes are really complex and meaty and interesting. They're a bit like the hunger games in that way, where if you return to them all of the philosophy really shines through looking at them with adult eyes.
and Todd and Viola are just--UGH. their relationship is so compelling and meaningful. Literally, I reread the entire series in about a week because I was actually obsessed. Definitely would recommend as a reread
