what are the religious themes and parallels of ASOUE part thirteen?
I’m so glad you asked! and completely unprompted, too :)
okay so you know that karl marx quote “religion is the opium of the people”? and how that means that religion allows its followers to turn a blind eye to societal problems and to ease people’s concerns about their life? yeah well lemony snicket did that literally. the island in The End is a result of Ishmael realising that he had lost control of VFD. originally, he wanted to create a peaceful society of noble, well-read people — this led him to enforce a black-and-white view of morality onto its members. obviously, there were people who criticised this, but believe it or not ishmael is not an open minded man. once again, he believes that there is an objective view of morality, and those questioning it are inherently evil. so, he convinced the volunteers that those people were dangerous, which led to a schism, which led to. well you know. anyways that was a gross oversimplification because that’s not what i’m talking about! what i was going to say was that he took some people affected by the schism — people who were also seeking an escape from the horrors that VFD had put them through — and he created a civilisation for them on an island. the only source of drinkable water on this island was cordial contaminated with opioids, and he knew this. in fact, he actively stopped newcomers from creating a water filtrations system. he then did everything in his power to make the inhabitants forget their old lives. he convinced them they’d ended up here by shipwreck, he made them bring him anything that washed up to determine if it was “safe”, he stored any reminders of the past on the other side of the island and banned the inhabitants from going there.
“nothing wrong with a little opium for the people!!” SIR. SIR THERE IS. Ishmael believes that peace should be achieved through any means necessary. therefore, if a problem has become too difficult to solve, he is all for simply pretending it doesn’t exist. This is why he gives the opiates to the islanders. He believes that maintaining a peaceful VFD has grown too complicated, and that the only way a peaceful society can exist is if its members unquestionably accept his rule. He not only believes morality to be black and white, but enforces this belief onto the volunteers, teaching them that following his authority is inherently “good”, and those who oppose or even question it are inherently evil. Since he couldn’t run a society like this in the “real world” — he would always have opposition, which would always mean conflict — he simply created his own, smaller world, where the civilians were too high off their balls to think critically about his leadership. After that, he only had to seem benevolent on the surface because they would all be too comfortable to dig deeper.
Now, black-and-white ethics, dictation of peace, dismissal of societal issues, and lack of scrutiny towards authority are all classic criticisms of religion, and you could definitely draw some parallels between Ishmael’s style of leadership and organised religion. This has all been quite generic antitheism so far. BUT THAT’S NOT ALL!!!
There is an apple tree on the “bad” side of the island. the tree is hollow. there is a library inside, containing any books which may remind the islanders of their past life. these mostly include books from the volunteers and firestarters, the “good” and “bad” sides of the schism. one might say it’s a sort of. a s. a sort of tree of knowledge of good and evil, if you will.
And then later in the book, klaus and violet, a man and a woman, are given an apple from that tree by a snake. classic daniel handler subtlety <3 so ofc this represents genesis, but here is where we get Wierd With It.
The apple saves the baudelaires. They were poisoned with the medusoid mycelium, and the apple immunised them. in fact, the apple is not presented in a negative light in the slightest. this has VERY interesting implications in my opinion and it makes me think that daniel handler is saying, in the bible, eve was also never wrong for eating the fruit! we would be nowhere without the knowledge of sin and death and suffering, there would be no art without it, nor would there be appreciation for the good (ok this part might be me)! eve was in the right, and so was the snake!! which is also incredibly fitting because everyone thinks that the incredibly deadly viper is evil but it actually wouldn’t hurt a fly (we know because monty tried to feed it flies :))
“ohhh ur overthinking it” yes on purpose overthinking this series is my number one hobby. anyways i just thought daniel handler was making an interesting point here :33 anyways i will add more stuff if i think of it

Good Omens Book Club
So I have, in other fandoms, talked about the importance of what an audience can actually see on the screen. Specifically: When a constrained format (like, say, between 45 to 56 minutes of a single visual/audio input) is telling a constrained story (like, say, something that must start, climax, and resolve within some kind of structure), it's useful for the audience to pay attention to what gets given the valuable real estate of camera/story time.
So when time is given and effort made to show the actual titles of actual books... well.
Figure 1. Local bookshelf weighted down by an over-abundance of literary allusions.
Tumblr media
This is a screenshot from episode 3 of Good Omens's second season, as Jim is reshelving all the books in Aziraphale's book shop by the first letter of their first sentences. He's about to shelve Jane Austens's Pride and Prejudice ("It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.") and the red sideways book, that he is about to pick up, is Good Omens itself ("It was a nice day.").
But, unusually, we can see the title of almost every other book on the shelf. Several of them appeared in the advertising poster, too, as I outlined previously (if you click that link, be advised that I am very proud of several bits of that essay and also let's not talk about how my go-to for musical references is Middle English folk rather than, say, Buddy Holly). Anyway-- with this in mind, and the understanding that time, effort, and celluloid have been spent on getting this shot to the audience, it would behoove us, I think, to actually look at these books.
Figure 2. A pair of showrunners providing not-so-subtle ancillary notation suggesting the same thing, so really, this is a no-brainer in terms of meta fodder.
Tumblr media
Okay, Trifles, so what about the book club
Technically, this isn't my idea. It's Neil's and Douglas's, so jot that down.
What I figure is, I can provide a list of the books shown, their first lines, and a VERY brief summary of each. Those are below. And as I rewatch the show, I may reblog this post with additions, but also...
I've read some of these, but not all of them, and not recently -- with at least one of them, though, I remember enough to know that the first line and summary do nothing to showcase the heartrending possibilities the book may be alluding to for the overall Good Omens narrative.
And further-- as I collected these summaries and first lines, I started noticing some compelling commonalities. Which I, for one, would like to confirm and dig into more deeply.
So while I'm going to start reading these, it might be a Nice Idea for other folks to do so as well. The more write-ups we can get, the greater the concordance of Interesting Insights might be available. (And if you tag me in your write up, or otherwise draw my attention, I will gladly link your essay up here for the edification of others omfg.)
ANYWAY
The "Jim Shelving" Book List
From right to left (which feels odd, but it's the actual alphabetical-by-letter arrangement), and summaries from various internet sources:
Herzog, by Saul Bellows
"If I am out of my mind, it's all right with me, thought Moses Herzog."
"Herzog is a 1964 novel by Saul Bellow, composed in part of letters from the protagonist [...] The novel follows five days in the life of Moses E. Herzog who, at the age of forty-seven, is having a midlife crisis following his second divorce."
A Series of Unfortunate Events, (series) by Lemony Snicket
"If you are interested in happy endings, you would be better off reading some other book."
The first book in the series, The Bad Beginning, "tells the story of three children, Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire, who become orphans following a fire and are sent to live with Count Olaf, who attempts to steal their inheritance."
The Catcher in the Rye, by J. D. Salinger
"If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you’ll probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don’t feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth."
"The novel details two days in the life of 16-year-old Holden Caulfield after he has been expelled from prep school. [...] From what is implied to be a sanatorium, Holden, the narrator and protagonist, tells the story of his adventures before the previous Christmas."
The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald
"In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since."
"Set in the Jazz Age on Long Island, near New York City, the novel depicts first-person narrator Nick Carraway's interactions with mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and Gatsby's obsession to reunite with his former lover, Daisy Buchanan."
The Bible, (anthology) by God et al.
"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."
"25 And the Lord spake unto the Angel that guarded the eastern gate, saying 'Where is the flaming sword that was given unto thee?'
26 And the Angel said, 'I had it here only a moment ago, I must have put it down some where, forget my own head next.'
27 And the Lord did not ask him again."
The Big Sleep, by Raymond Chandler
"It was about eleven o’clock in the morning, mid October, with the sun not shining and a look of hard wet rain in the clearness of the foothills."
"Private investigator Philip Marlowe is hired by wealthy General Sternwood to stop a blackmailer. Marlowe suspects that the old General is merely testing his caliber before trusting him with a bigger job, one involving Sternwood's two amoral daughters."
Nineteen Eighty-Four, by George Orwell
"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen."
"In George Orwell's iconic and prophetic masterpiece, 1984, a haunting vision of a dystopian future unfolds. Set in a world dominated by the all-seeing eye of Big Brother, the story follows Winston Smith, a lowly Party member whose very thoughts are scrutinized. As the Party manipulates history and suppresses truth, Winston's yearning for individuality and connection pushes him into a daring dance on the edge of rebellion."
[A title I cannot, unfortunately, read-- if anyone who HAPPENS to be familiar with the show and HAPPENS to perhaps also be on tumblr just HAPPENS to say what this book might be, that would be Very Much Appreciated]
"????"
[WOW I WISH I WAS A SUMMARY OH WELL]
Catch-22, by Joseph Heller
"It was love at first sight."
"Set in the closing months of World War II in an American bomber squadron off the coast of Italy, Catch-22 is the story of a bombardier named Yossarian who is frantic and furious because thousands of people he has never even met keep trying to kill him. Joseph Heller's bestselling novel is a hilarious and tragic satire on military madness, and the tale of one man's efforts to survive it."
Love in the Time of Cholera, by Gabriel García Márquez
"It was inevitable: the scent of bitter almonds always reminded him of the fate of unrequited love."
"The story, which treats the themes of love, aging, and death, takes place between the late 1870s and the early 1930s in a South American community troubled by wars and outbreaks of cholera. It is a tale of two lovers, artistic Florentino Ariza and wealthy Fermina Daza, who reunite after a lifetime apart."
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon
"It was seven minutes after midnight."
"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a 2003 mystery novel by British writer Mark Haddon. [...] The novel is narrated in the first-person perspective by Christopher John Francis Boone, a 15-year-old boy who is described as "a mathematician with some behavioural difficulties" living in Swindon, Wiltshire. [...] Christopher sets out to solve the murder [of a neighbor's dog] in the style of his favourite (logical) detective, Sherlock Holmes."
The Crow Road, by Iain Banks
"It was the day my grandmother exploded."
A Scottish family drama about a perfect murder against the backdrop of the 1990s Gulf War. "This Bildungsroman is set in the fictional Argyll town of Gallanach, the real village of Lochgair, and in Glasgow, where the adult Prentice McHoan lives. Prentice's uncle Rory disappeared eight years previously while writing a book called The Crow Road. Prentice becomes obsessed with papers his uncle left behind and sets out to solve the mystery. Along the way he must cope with estrangement from his father, unrequited love, sibling rivalry, and failure at his studies."
No Woman No Cry: My Life with Bob Marley, by Rita Marley with Hettie James
"I was an ambitious girl child."
"Fans of reggae legend Bob Marley will welcome this no-nonsense biography from his wife, Rita, who was also his band member, business partner, musical collaborator and the only person to have witnessed firsthand his development from local Jamaican singer to international superstar."
I Capture the Castle, by Dodie Smith
"I write this sitting in the kitchen sink."
"I Capture the Castle tells the story of seventeen-year-old Cassandra and her family, who live in not-so-genteel poverty in a ramshackle old English castle. Here she strives, over six turbulent months, to hone her writing skills. She fills three notebooks with sharply funny yet poignant entries. Her journals candidly chronicle the great changes that take place within the castle's walls, and her own first descent into love."
...and because I happen to know and love this book, I'm aware of the devastating last lines...
"Only the margin left to write on now. I love you, I love you, I love you."

Keep You Safe (Klaus Baudelaire X Poe!Reader)
Masterlist
Request Something!
Summary: Being sick of her family’s comments about her friends, Y/n Poe decides to stay with the Baudelaire’s when they’re sent to Prufrock Preparatory School. When Count Olaf comes to the school to get to the Baudelaire’s, Klaus becomes concerned about Y/n’s wellbeing.
***
Y/n didn’t know how she pulled it off, but she was able to convince her dad to let her stay at Prufrock Preparatory School with the Baudelaires after the lumber mill incident. Maybe it was because she said she’d keep the Baudelaires out of trouble or because the Poe house was too small for three growing children and their parents. But however it happened, her father, Mr. Poe, let her stay.
Y/n had known the Baudelaires since their parents, unfortunately, passed away in a fire that destroyed their home. Mr. Poe had the Baudelaires stay with his family for a week while he tried finding a guardian for them. Y/n had become friends with them during that time, despite the gossip her mother kept spreading about them. She would accompany the Baudelaires and their father to every guardian they got sent to, making them promise to stay in contact with her so she would know how they were doing. It didn’t feel like a sacrifice of her time; she loved her new friends. It helped that she had a growing crush on Klaus Baudelaire.
But now, they didn’t need to make that promise because they would be staying together. Unfortunately, because the Baudelaires were orphans, they had to stay in a shack because their parents couldn’t sign off on permission for them to stay in a dorm. Y/n didn’t have that problem, but it just made her feel worse. She was staying in a spacious room with three other people while her friends didn’t even have a real bed. She felt even worse after they met the Quigley triplets, two orphan siblings who were also dropped off at Prufrock Prep after being handed from guardian to guardian. But she would push the guilt away whenever she hung out with them, wanting her friends to experience some fun times despite their situation.
But that didn’t last for long.
Unlike her family, Y/n believed the Baudelaires when they would tell stories of Count Olaf constantly following them. The eccentric man was their first guardian and was only removed from guardianship because he tried to marry Violet so he could have access to the Baudelaire fortune. He’s been trying to get his hands on it and them ever since. And it had happened again.
At an assembly, the Baudelaires and Y/n were shocked to see Count Olaf walk up onto the stage in a ridiculous costume, naming himself Coach Genghis, the new PE teacher. And the worst part was that everyone believed him. Even after Klaus and Violet ran up to expose him. Count Olaf had covered up his identifier, a tattoo of an eye on his ankle.
To make matters worse, Count Olaf had another plan to try to get the Baudelaire’s fortune. He made up some lies about how orphans have frail bodies, which leads to paranoia and delusions. To combat this, he developed a program that he would be offering to select students. It didn’t surprise Y/n or the Baudelaires that they were the select students.
This led them to their current predicament. Count Olaf’s running program took place at night, so the Baudelaires had no time to study for their classes, even though they were meaningless. This was causing them to fail their classes, which could later cause them to fail out of school, which would give Count Olaf the opportunity to steal them away.
Luckily, with every problem, there was a solution.
“Are you sure you’ll be able to pull this off?” Y/n asked as she and the Baudelaires walked to their classes. “Count Olaf may be silly and dumb, but he’s not completely stupid.”
“Trust us, Y/n,” Violet said. “It’s worth a shot. Now, I gotta go. I’ll see you guys at lunch.” The eldest Baudelaire sibling then walked away to her classroom. Y/n and Klaus continued their venture to their own class.
“It’ll work, Y/n. Don’t worry.” Klaus reassured her. “Are you sure you want to help Violet and me study for our tests? We’ll likely be up all night; I’d hate for you to lose sleep.” It made Y/n giddy that he cared enough about her sleep schedule.
“Of course, Klaus! I’d do anything to make sure Count Olaf doesn’t get his hands on you and your fortune. And if that means I lose a little sleep, so be it.” Klaus mirrored her bright smile.
“You’re such a good friend, Y/n. I don’t know what we’d do without you.” Y/n’s smile dimmed a bit, but Klaus didn’t notice. She loved being Klaus’ friend, but her heart hurt a bit at the thought of her being nothing more than that to him.
He held the door open for her, and they walked into Mrs. Bass’ classroom to learn about the metric system.
***
The Baudelaires, Quagmires, and Y/n were lucky to find an ally in Olivia Caliban, the school’s librarian. Even though the library would only be open for a few minutes every day, Olivia would allow the students to stay to read or get away from everyone else. This was one of those instances, except they were doing more than just reading.
Their plan was to have Duncan and Isadora, the Quagmire triplets, take the Baudelaires’ places, so they could study for a test to determine whether they would fail out of school.
The Baudelaires were reluctant to the idea. They didn’t want their friends to be put in any of the danger they had to face, and being alone with Count Olaf and his henchmen could be dangerous. But the Quagmires were insistent on helping their new friends.
Using wire and stringy trim from a lampshade, they made disguises for the Quagmires that could pass them off as the Baudelaires in the dark.
“How do I look?” Isadora asked Y/n and Klaus as she secured the fake fringe to her forehead.
“Convincing.” Y/n smiled, going back to helping Sunny use her teeth to shape spare wire into a pair of fake glasses for Duncan.
“Different,” Klaus said. “I mean, not a bad different. That’s not what I meant; you look very nice. Just, different.” Y/n tried not to show confusion on her face. Why did Klaus suddenly not know how to talk to Isadora?
“Thanks.”
Soon, the Quagmires were ready to impersonate their friends. Since they didn’t have a smaller sibling to replace Sunny, the group decided to put a bag of flour in a small wagon. The Quagmires would pull the wagon behind them as they ran around the track.
“Good luck.” The Baudelaires and Y/n said to the Quagmires. In thanks, Isadora leaned forward and kissed Klaus’ cheek. They shared a look before Isadora moved to leave, Duncan and the bag of flour behind her. Klaus stood in his spot momentarily, seemingly not knowing what to do.
“Well.” Violet broke the silence. “We better get going.” She picked up Sunny and went to the library doors, waiting for Y/n and Klaus.
“What’s wrong?” She asked him. Her voice seemed to shake him from whatever trance he was in.
“Nothing.” Klaus grabbed Y/n’s hand and made his way over to his sisters. “Let’s go.”
***
They had been studying for three hours when Sunny and Violet dozed off. Klaus and Y/n knew they should wake them up so they could keep studying, but they also knew that trying to retain information with no energy wouldn’t help them. So Klaus and Y/n kept studying on their own.
“How long was the banana?” Y/n quizzed Klaus. He was doing very well, getting all of the questions right. But he was starting to be less quick with his responses, which concerned Y/n. “Klaus?”
“Ten centimeters?”
“That would be a short banana.” Y/n tried to laugh to cover up her increasing concern for Klaus. She put down the flashcards she had made for him. “Klaus, are you okay?”
“I’m fine; why do you ask?”
“You’re becoming less responsive. If you’re tired, you can take a nap, and I can wake you up later so you can keep studying.”
“No, it’s not that.” Klaus patted her hand. “Thank you, though.”
“Then what is it?” Y/n tried racking her brain for an explanation for his behavior. “Are you worried about Isadora?”
“What?” Klaus sat up from his slouching position. “Why Isadora specifically?”
Y/n shrugged, fumbling with the flashcards as she tried to find an answer that wouldn’t make her come across as jealous.
“I don’t know. I mean, she’s running around in the dark, being watched by Count Olaf. Doesn’t that worry you?”
“I’m more worried about her and Duncan together, not just her specifically.”
“Right.” Y/n shook her head, trying to escape the thought of Klaus and Isadora. “Sorry, it’s just that it kind of seemed like there was something more there.”
“Why would you think that?”
“I mean, she kissed your cheek. That must’ve meant something, right?”
Klaus was silent, trying to think of a response. Y/n regretted saying anything about it. She should’ve just pushed for him to fall asleep; it would be better than having this conversation with him right now.
“Never mind.” She said, picking out a new flash card. “What was the length of the-”
“It would’ve meant more coming from you.” Klaus cut Y/n off, looking at her sheepishly.
“What?”
“That kiss would’ve meant more to me if it had come from you.” He picked at the hay bale that the two were sitting on. “No offense to Isadora, but it’s the truth.”
It was now Y/n’s turn to find a response. It didn’t take too long.
“I can, if you’d like.” She looked at Klaus. “Give you a kiss, that is.”
“I, uh, I’d like that.” Y/n dropped the flashcards onto the hay and leaned forward. She was going for Klaus’ cheek, but in a split-second moment of bravery, she kissed him on the lips instead. It was just a peck, but Klaus didn’t seem to mind. There was a moment of silence where the two just looked at each other, heat evident on their cheeks.
“After our tests, and when Count Olaf is revealed for who he truly is, I want you to go home,” Klaus said matter of factly.
“What?” Y/n was taken aback by the confession. He took her hands.
“Y/n, I care about you too much to let you get wrapped up in this mess. Count Olaf is a murderer; he’ll stop at nothing to get what he wants. I can’t let him get to you.” He squeezed Y/n’s hands. “Promise me, Y/n.”
“But what if I never see you again?”
“We’ll meet again; I’ll make sure of it. But until Count Olaf is defeated once and for all, I need to know that you’re safe. Please, Y/n, promise me.”
Y/n was reluctant. She didn’t want to leave her friends or Klaus alone at the hands of Count Olaf. But Klaus was being persistent.
“Only if you promise that we’ll see each other again.” He nodded in understanding.
“I promise.”
“Then I promise.”
They sealed the promise with another kiss. They spent the rest of the night studying some more, not wanting to think about the future too much. The two hoped that when Y/n went home, they would see each other sooner rather than later.

speculations. no logic just ramblings. sugar bowl. dismal dinner. etc. do not trust anything i say.
anyway.
so the 4 parts of the dismal dinner, the event was described (highlights mine)
(part 1) My discovery of a puddle of water suggests that Violet, the oldest Baudelaire child, invented something at the dinner party held at the Baudelaire mansion quite some time before it burnt to the ground. Crackers with meat and cheese were served, and at least two guests were disguised as desserts.
(part 2) My discovery of a singed page of “Taking the Teeth Out of Teething” confirms that Klaus, the middle Baudelaire child, was in attendance at his parents’ fourth-to-last dinner party. Like the guest disguised as the ice sculpture, Klaus wore a bowtie, which involves a very simple knot that is very complicated to create.
(part 3) My discovery of a torn pant leg shows that Sunny, an infant and the youngest Baudelaire child, played a key role in the dinner party held at the Baudelaire mansion quite some time before it was reduced to a smoking pile of rubble.
(part 4) Recent discoveries support my suspicions about the fateful event hosted by the Baudelaire parents before their death.
we can reasonably conclude that the 4 parts are all referring to the same dinner party / same night bc the events described in each part (sunny teething and crying and shrieking, violet inventing something to ease sunny's pain, klaus what he read on teething, etc) the timing description from part 1, 3, 4 were all a big vague but from part 2 we know this is the fourth-to-last dinner party of b&b.
we also know that olaf was lurking outside at this 4th to last dinner party (from sunny's shriek's double meaning and lemony's secret message from the end of each letter OLAFWASTHERE). a sugar bowl was being used, and passed around at the dining table.
is this sugar bowl The Sugar Bowl, let's assume, for the moment, yes.
thinking about, how many dinner parties did olaf spy on, was it just this one, or more. had beatrice always been using the sugar bowl at her dinner parties? was this something she did regularly? all those dinner parties the kids remembered, the sugar bowl was always there?
or, even though beatrice was the one who stole the sugar bowl from esme, the bowl hadn't been in her possession for a while, until recently it came back to her again. because the dismal dinner seemed to imply the sugar bowl being at the dinner party and seen by olaf was why the baudelaires' mansion got burnt down. but if beatrice had always had the sugar bowl, wouldn't the sugar bowl pursuers moved in sooner? unless they didn't know. except beatrice was the one to steal it and esme knew that. perhaps people spent years trying to hunt down the sugar bowl and thought it was elsewhere, when in fact it's been with beatrice all along, and she uses it at dinner parties.
then again, perhaps it's just been back in beatrice's possession once again, after not being with her for a while - perhaps with another volunteer, or hidden away somewhere far away. why was it passed back to beatrice again, now of all times? in fact, did she just receive it at this dinner party as a "gift", before the party started? at least two of the guests were disguised as desserts, at least one an ice sculpture. is this some theme? is this a regular occurrence at b&b's dinner parties? is this one special, did specific people need to hide there identities?
if this is The Sugar Bowl, which was at the baudelaire mansion at the 4th-to-last dinner party, where was it ..... after the mansion burnt down. olaf and esme were trying to chase after it in the later books, so they didn't have it. well, unless they had it and lost it again. (Second Time Esme Squalor Lost The Sugar Bowl, Wait Until The Readers Of Daily Punctilio Hear About This!)
but maybe i'm thinking about it wrong. perhaps beatrice didn't just receive the sugar bowl again. maybe it's the opposite. she's always had it, and at that dinner party olaf found out about it, by spying outside. she found out he knew (alerted by an associate, or having received a direct threat from olaf/esme saying I'm Going To Take The Sugar Bowl Back), so she acted quick, and hide it somewhere else / sent it to someone she trusted. that was why olaf and/or esme didn't find it after the mansion burnt down. while it's not confirmed that olaf did set the fire, there's pretty strong evidence that he was there at the mansion on that day, regardless if he was actually the one who burnt the house down. perhaps he was there to negotiate / threaten / search for the sugar bowl, and did not find it.
because beatrice sent it away.
i keep coming back to the dinner party. was it a regular thing for the sugar bowl to be used, or a special case for that specific party? should i read more into the guests disguised as desserts? maybe beatrice kept the sugar bowl hidden all these years, in her own home, but olaf thought it was elsewhere for the longest time, but certain events led her to believe he may suspect she in fact has it. so she decided to pass this to another safe place (the disguised guests were vfd volunteers), and olaf happened to witness the sugar bowl being out on the dinner table. but he didn't know it was being passed and thought beatrice still retained it, after the party. or he knew but he needed to ask beatrice where had she hide the bowl / who did she gave the bowl to, so he went to the mansion the day it burnt down. perhaps he burnt the place down in a rage after he didn't find it / she wouldn't tell him. perhaps he left and the house was later burnt down by someone else.

Quote Debunk 10 - A Series of Unfortunate Debunks:
The Complete Works of Contradictory Logic in ASOUE: Volume I
Part 1 - The Bad Beginning: S1 E1
For Debunk 10, I'm going big: I shall list each and every statement that can confuse or distract viewers the first time around, but on closer inspection, actually make no sense.
12:42 - BAUDELAIRE MANSION DESTROYED (headline)
"But I thought it would cheer them up, the Gloomy Guses!" ¬ Eleanora Poe.
14:17 - "Our home is your home" (Arthur Poe); "But don't touch anything" (Eleanora Poe)
15:39 - "I remember how I was when I was your age" (Mr Poe); "We're all different ages" (Baudelaires)
15:49 - "And he's employed as an actor, so you know his excitement is genuine." ¬ Arthur Poe
26:43 - "I told them to cry using their inside voices" ¬ Olaf
27:51 - "I open my home to them and all they do is complain; the bathroom is filthy, the rat is noisy, the bed is cramped!"
Why are you opening a disgusting, rat-infested home to 3 orphans, Olaf?!
From the same scene, this piece:
"The plural of 'bed' is 'bed'." ¬ Olaf
29:02 - *Puts finger in mouth*; "The lamb was too salty"
30:43 - "Your secret tower room?"; "WRONG! My secret tower room."
33:28 - Pasta Puttanesca; "I wonder what that means in Italian" ¬ K.B.
NO, YOU DO NOT KLAUS! NO, YOU DO NOT!
34:00 - Something I picked up when reviewing the episode for this post: the trolley reads "THIS TROLLEY DOES NOT TURN ON RED LIGHTS"... why? A bit nonsensical if you ask me, but maybe Handler had his reasons...
35:58 - "N! For the knowledge, 'cause I'm very, very smart!" ¬ O.
So smart, you can't spell knowledge. Amazing.
37:25 - "...Like 2 pieces of a bread in the middle of a sandwich." ¬O.
Followed by Sunny's obvious correction.
As of 40:10 - From Olaf's monologue: "...for the purpose of plotting theater..."
Yeah. He told us from the start and we missed it.
40:41 - "There is no 'I' in acting..."
Except for the one right in the middle, of course.
40:58 - "There is only what the French call a certain... 'escargot'. "
What have snails got to do with acting?!
A noteworthy point: Only the villains give this counter-acting logic; maybe my hypothesis will still stand by TE...

Time to the do Baudelaires with little spoilers
All: are orphans, rich with no money access, being chased by a crazy pedo actor uncle with a gang of nobodies who want the money, really god damn smart, parents were part of a secret organization, almost everyone dies at some point, traumatized, are barely teenagers
Sunny: the tiny little menace, teeth can cut through rock in seconds, almost bit a metal finger off and almost took the hand with, the dumbest but, is still a baby, has her own language, is on par with her siblings
Klaus: the smartest menace but the least menacing, would somehow extend the IQ scale, siblings have to carry because he is such a pussy, makes plan A (always fails) and helps plan B
Violet: the oldest menace, is plan B, *puts hair up* is now able to think of the perfect machine for the problem (but not in the way that makes you think "that's not possible")
I tried not to go past, like episode 3 or 4 for this
thank you for this! this has been added to the spreadsheet :)

2, 3, and 12 for Violet Baudelaire?
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
I love how her special skill is inventing, and that she's accepted as being good at what she does. Because I think a lot of the time characters who are into stem are more on the sidelines and in supporting roles rather than directly involved with the main events, if that makes sense. But her character isn't like that, and even though the things she goes through are horrible, it's still her going through the main storyline herself. Does any of this make sense, for what I am trying to say.
3. Least favorite canon thing about this character?
I don't like how much her parents ingrained it into her that since she's the eldest, it's up to her to protect her siblings, and how much she takes it to heart. Like, of course she's going to do her best to protect them but it's not her sole responsibility especially since Klaus is only 2 years younger, and this part about her personality just annoys me a little. I understand where this though process is coming from for her, but also I'm like. Please see that this isn't fair to you and that you and Klaus are in this together
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
I think that she's a really good artist, like with drawing, but she never uses it except for sketching out ideas or plans for her inventions, and doesn't even recognize what she draws as art.
And also that she's the tallest one out of her siblings even after they are all grown up, by a noticable difference. She gets her height from Lemony (<- because she is his biological daughter this is not headcanon this is pure FACT)

ASoUE REWRITE - Season 1; The Miserable Mill - Part i.iii
⇢ Klaus x Reader⇠
Tumblr media
*not my gif*
<A//n: if any of you are confused as to why the reader hasn't shared her knowledge on the Paltryville fire, don't worry, that's on purpose. It's coming.>
As the children walked back to the mill, Klaus brought up what had been mentioned earlier.
"Did you say he only pays the workers in coupons?"
"It's true. We are all paid in coupons, but it doesn't matter, we don't have any money to use the coupons with. I tried bringing up such matters, including the gum with Sir but he got mad at me and threatened to kick me out."
     "That's awful."
"I know that you have nowhere else to go, but why doesn't anybody else leave?" Violet asked.
"They are quite weird about that." Y/n seeming to recall something.
Before Y/n could elaborate any further, the children found themselves back at the mill, and the four reluctantly got back to work.
They worked in silence for quite a while. Eventually, Violet looked up at her brother and noticed the familiar look on his face.
     "You're thinking something."
Y/n, who was working on the very same log as the eldest Baudelaire siblings, couldn't help but hear their conversation, but nevertheless, continued to work.
"The new foreman. Phil said he just showed up last night. What if he's Count Olaf and being a foreman's his new disguise?"
"He is cruel like Count Olaf," Violet admitted. "but Count Olaf runs a horrible theatre company, not a lumber mill."
"But isn't it suspicious how we never see his face? And we only ever hear his voice over the loudspeaker."
"The mill is noisy. Besides, it's probably the only way anyone could ever hear him. I know what you're trying to do."
     "Keep us safe."
"Find a reason to leave. And we will, I promise, as soon as we clear our parent's names."
Y/n focused all her attention on the log, feeling this wasn't something she had the right to hear.
"I... I need a new debarker." Klaus mumbled.
Leaving his sisters and Yn to continue the current log, Klaus decided to do a little investigating himself.
Upon approaching the foreman, he had noticed that the man was sleeping, his left leg resting just outside the booth.
Klaus moved quickly and he swiftly took a knee up against the booth. Cautiously, he reached his hand for the foreman's pant leg and slowly tried to raise it up, checking for a familiar eye tattoo.
The pant leg had barely moved when the snoring foreman, twitched in his sleep causing Klaus to jump himself. He froze, staring at the foreman for only a few moments, before attempting to move the pant leg once more.
Suddenly, the foreman woke with a start, frightening Klaus who removed his hand and jumped to his feet.
     "What are you doing, Midget?"
     "I... need a new debarker."
"Spoiled brat wants a new debarker. Old rusty one isn't good enough for him, eh? They're over there, rich boy."
The foreman extended his left arm and it was then that Klaus saw the long and awkward over-extension of the man's arm. The arm was completely covered by the uniform and long rubber glove, and it was the kind of length of arm one would have if their hands were missing and replaced with long metal hooks. Just like one of Count Olaf's most faithful theatre troupe members.
"Wait..." Klaus mumbled the familiar sensation of his pounding heart was setting in.
Klaus was thrown to the ground before he knew what hit him, which in this case, was the large rubber boot belonging to the foreman, who had kicked him to the ground, rather harshly. Winded and still quite confused, the foreman took the opportunity to step forward and with his rather large rubber boot, he stepped right on Klaus' glasses, cracking the lenses.
"Whoops!" He said, before, coincidentally, lumbering back into his booth.
     "Klaus!" Violet cried.
She had looked over just in time to see the foreman kick her brother to the ground, and step on something. Y/n, who grabbed Sunny per her request, was quick to follow.
"Klaus! Are you hurt?" Y/n asked, still holding Sunny who was peering down at her brother in concern.
"No, I don't think so. Just caught off guard."
     "You're glasses, they're--" Violet began.
     "Twisted,"
     "Cracked,"
"Hopelessly broken," Said the crowd of lumber workers who had gathered around the scene.
"They Look A-okay to me." Said Phil, giving an optimistic thumbs up.
Klaus had stood up and had to hold his glasses on with one hand. One of the arms of the glasses was missing and both lenses were completely cracked.
Violet turned to the crowd to explain. "The foreman kicked him and stepped on his glasses!"
"How can I kick him when I'm up in this booth?" Came the voice of the foreman, from his booth. "It was probably karma."
     "Can you see?" Y/n asked.
"A little," Klaus said squinting, still holding his glasses on with one hand.
"He'll live. Get back to work." Barked the foreman.
The lumber workers scattered, aside from Y/n, the Baudelaires and Phil who scoffed, which came out as more of a wheeze as he kindly gestured to Klaus. "He can't work if he can't see. He needs an optometrist."
The foreman didn't seem to care. He merely shrugged his large shoulders and returned to his booth. Phil turned to Klaus and the others and put a hand on Klaus' shoulder. "Lucky for you, we've got a great one right here in what's left of our town."
"You mean the building shaped like an eye?" Klaus asked, warily.
"Oh, yeah, Dr. Orwell treats all the workers. You probably saw the coupon in your welcome packet. I better get you there."
Klaus looked between his sisters and his friend. "I'll be fine. Maybe I can find some answers."
"Maybe we can find some answers too." Violet smiled, sharing a hopeful look with Y/n and then Sunny.
"We better hurry. And we have to be careful this time. Good luck, Klaus." Y/n said, and with that, the three girls turned and left.
Klaus didn't know what was worse. Having to go to the eye building, or being separated from his friend and sisters. But one thing was certain. The further the girls were, the more the pit in his stomach grew, and the more danger he was in.
+ + +
Reluctantly, he followed Phil and before long, Klaus Baudelaire was standing before the building shaped like an eye. Peering up at the tall, ominous building, he recalled a piece of knowledge from a popular book he once read.
"In the book The Great Gatsby, there's a famous sign shaped like a pair of eyeglasses." He said, peering up at the wooden sign shaped like a pair of eyeglasses that hung off the side of the building.
"Does it represent an optometrist?" Phil asked, curious.
"It represents the eyes of God staring down and judging society as a moral wasteland."
"Oh, that sounds like a fun book," Phil chirped.
"Listen..." He said, extending an arm to Klaus once more. "I know going to the doctor can be scary. But doctors are your friends. Come on." He said cheerfully, guiding Klaus inside the eye-shaped building.
Phil was wrong, of course. As anyone who's been to a doctor knows, doctors are not necessarily your friends, any more than butchers, mail deliverers, or refrigerator repair people are your friends. Especially, if any of these such people are conspiring with a villain who is after your fortune.
+ + +
Meanwhile, Sunny, Y/n, and Violet had managed to sneak away from their station and into the library across from Sir's office.
"We better hurry, before the foreman realizes we're gone," Violet said, her voice lowered.
The three ladies had noticed Sir's office doors were wide open, but the office was thankfully empty.
"Or before Sir gets back." Y/n pointed out.
"We better get to work," Violet said, heading for a nearby shelf.
"Here you are Sunny. Thank you for trusting me to carry you," Y/n said, resting little baby Sunny on one of the armchairs.
"Yeeba," Sunny said, which meant something like, "And thank you!"
Y/n smiled timidly and looked to Violet who quickly translated, as she walked along scanning the books on the shelves.
"They're all The History of Lucky Smells Lumbermill. Who would want so many copies of the same book?" Violet said.
Y/n reached up and grabbed a copy of The History of Lucky Smells Lumbermill and the two girls looked to the back cover.
     "Of course," Mumbled Yn.
There on the back cover was a photo of Sir surrounded in his usual cloud of smoke you could hardly make him out. Below his photograph were the words "About The Author". Yn shook her head and quickly brought the book to the table, and began flipping through the pages.
"Do you think we will ever be able to find anything on the Paltryville fire?" Y/n asked as she quickly skimmed the pages.
"Whenever Klaus reads a long, difficult book, the first thing he does is read the table of contents," Violet said.
Y/n nodded, turning to the front of the large book, finally landing on the table of contents. She ran her finger down the list of chapters.
"Let's see," the word 'fire' in particular caught her eye. "Here it is, chapter 12. The Paltryville Fire."
Violet could hear the rather large lump forming in her friend's throat as she spoke. She felt awful dredging up her friends past.
     "Y/n, I'm sorry," she began.
Y/n smiled weakly. "Thank you, Violet, but it's alright, really. I meant it when I said I want to help clear your parent's names,"
Violet nodded appreciatively, and the girls returned to the book and flipped to chapter twelve, their hearts pounding.
What they found is not what they were expecting. The entire page was inked out. It looked as if someone had gone through with a permanent marker and covered the entire page, save for five simple words.
"'The Baudelaires were unequivocally responsible...'" Violet read aloud for Sunny who was still in the chair. "The rest is crossed out."
"This can't be in all the books, can it?" Y/n asked.
"Only one way to find out,"
The two young girls began pulling books off the shelf and opening them to chapter twelve. Book after book, looked exactly the same as the first.
Minutes ticked by that felt like hours as the girls dumped book after book on the table. And yet, just as their hope was wearing thin, the seventeenth book Violet pulled off the shelf was flipped open to chapter twelve, and sure enough, there laid an untouched book.
"This one's not crossed out!" Violet cried, grabbing Sunny and Y/n's attention.
Just as the two older girls were about to read the entry, a loud thud echoed down the hall, followed by the sound of heavy boots trudging down the hall.
     "Hide!" Whispered Y/n.
Violet abandoned the book in order to grab Sunny and the three girls were able to duck behind the leather chair just in the nick of time. A phrase which here means, mere seconds before Sir poked his smoked covered nose in the library when he noticed all the books that were off the shelves.
From where she was crouched, Y/n was able to peek over the leather armchair unnoticed. She watched as Sir inspected the open books, the only one that remained untouched to be exact, and the frown that crossed his features. He turned the book around to look at what it was open to and upon recognition, he glanced over his shoulder making sure no one watching. And with his one free hand, he ripped the page right out of the book, folded it up, and tucked it in his jacket pocket before walking away.
Sighing heavily, Y/n sat down on her knees facing the Baudelaire girls. "Oh, no! He took the page! I'm so sorry," She whispered.
"What are you sorry for?" Violet asked.
"I could've done something. I could have grabbed it," Y/n felt awful her friends didn't have that information.
Violet smiled weakly. "I could have too. But that's not what matters right now. We need to get out of here, and quickly."
Y/n nodded firmly in agreement. It was then that Violet and Y/n looked to the youngest Baudelaire who spoke up, grabbing their attention.
     "Yuba," which meant, "Found something."
Sunny pointed to a rather large book with very fancy decorations. It was titled, 'Very Functional Dictionary' in large gold letters.
"A dictionary. But why are you showing this to us? You can't read." Violet asked gently.
Y/n opened up the very function dictionary and found a note scribbled in the front that Violet noticed.
The quote that Sunny found scrawled on the inside cover has been said by many associates over the years. It goes...
"'In every library, there is a single book that can answer the question that burns like a fire in the mind.'" Violet read aloud.
It wasn't the quote that caught Sunny's eye, nor was it the reference to fire that set Violet's heart racing. It was the handwriting. For when Violet saw the strong left lean of L's, and the confident closed loop of the O's, she knew who wrote it even before she saw the name on the library checkout card.
"Bertrand Baudelaire," Violet murmured wistfully. "Father!"
     "Da-da!" Sunny exclaimed softly.
Y/n smiled fondly, happy to see her friends have this small moment of peace. But she couldn't quite shake the feeling of familiarity at that passage.
Where had she heard it before?
+ + +
Sir was examining the papers at his desk, cigar in hand - and mouth - when Charles had brought him his goat cheese and beef jerky omelet.
"They're good children," Charles said to his partner. "I don't see why we have to lie to them. The truth is right there in your book."
"Not anymore," grumbled Sir, pulling out the page he had previously confiscated. "I had it redacted."
"Sir, you defaced your own book?"
     "I didn't have a choice."
"Charles, we made certain deals to keep this mill open." Sir said, rising from his desk and stepping towards his partner. "And if she wants us to cover up the truth and blame the fire on the Baudelaires, well... that's the cost of doing business."
Sir was opposite Charles, his voice grew serious.
"This mill is all I have, Charles." He crumpled up the missing page of the Paltryville fire and threw it into the lit fireplace, and it roared. "And you."
Sir rested his hand on Charles's left shoulder, looking into his eyes. "Of course I have you." He gave his partner a smile and a pat on the cheek.
Unfortunately, Charles had mistaken the mood and leaned in but Sir had already turned away and left his office.
Unable to shake the pang of guilt and responsibility, Charles took the opportunity of his partner's absence to salvage the torn page that Sir had thrown into the fireplace.
And yet, something the two men failed to have noticed in that short passage of time, was the three young girls who had been stuck in the library since Sir's return and overheard their exchange before escaping the library.

A Series of Unfortunate Events 3.06, “Penultimate Peril: Part 2”
The past haunts the present the way a ghost might haunt an opera house. It hovers over it the way a murder of crows might hover over a hotel. The past can hit you like a rock. It can trap you like a sticky piece of flypaper. It can spin in cycles like a wet pair of pants. And it can change you the way these next two minutes changed my own life. Forever.

Part 3 Autistic Characters: Violet and Klaus Baudelaire
from A Series of Unfortunate Events
Tumblr media
Violet Baudelaire
Tumblr media
Klaus Baudelaire
Okay most of the time I put my reasoning in the tags but these two and this show I have a lot to say. I think this one is really interesting because watching the show, as a viewer, you see the kids as the only “normal” ones while everyone else seems illogical and weird. Everyone else, really with the exception of the Quagmire children, views the Baudelaire Kids as odd and themselves as the normal ones. They state and reinforce the point that the kids just don’t get certain things, typically because of their age, and that the adults and others in the show know better.
I think this perfectly captures the experience of being neurodivergent, specifically autistic, in a neurotypical world. You feel like the only sane one and can tend to feel like everyone else is blind to your troubles or actively contributing to them. It feels very much like you against the world, with very few people who try to bridge the gap.
Even then, when people try to understand there is still that disconnect, such as with the Baudelaire Kids and Monty. While Monty had good intentions and genuinely wanted to help them, he still didn’t see everything and was tricked even when the kids were not, and refused to believe them when they tried to communicate the trickery to him
Though, with most of their guardians or adult figures in there life, they do not even make an effort to try to understand or listen to the Baudelaire’s. The way that Violet, Klaus, and even Sunny are forced to move through the world is a great representation of how it is moving through our world as an autistic individual.
Now, we see some general autistic traits of Violet and Klaus (I do not feel like we see enough of Sunny to add her to this list, but would not be surprised if she was). Both of them have special interests and things that they excel and know pretty much everything about; Klaus with books and research and Violet with her inventions.
However, I think part of the reason there are not a lot of stand out things we can point to to say that “Look at this; they’re autistic because of this” is because as the viewer we see things from their perspective (well technically Lemony’s perspective but I also feel like he could fall under the neurodivergent branch due to his perspective and understanding of events). We see everyone else as weird and odd, something autistic people are typically seen as, because the actions of Violet and Klaus make sense from their/our perspective.
It flips the script and shows how frustrating and utterly devastating having people who do not understand you can be. I think this show is a great way to show people who do not fall under the neurodivergent umbrella what it is like to be neurodivergent in a society and world, built and structured around neurotypicality.
