Science, Middle School, Lab activity, Physical properties, Making observations MS-PS1-2 Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.

Prep:

Cover a lab bench with painters plastic, destined to be disposed of. Place toothpaste and petroleum jelly on it, with small containers for each to be kept separate and a third, disposable container in which to mix them (with ample supply of stirring sticks).

Bring in objects such as wood, tile, brick, coins, and cardboard. The point is to supply objects of different textures and porosity with which to test the properties of the admixture.

Do Now:

Perform the following in your Lab Journal.

Draw a Venn Diagram of the physical properties of Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline) and Toothpaste. You may draw upon your prior knowledge and also reference the two substances in display at the lab bench. Do not mix them (yet)!

Class Discussion: 

Students share their observations of the properties of each substance, and teacher writes exemplars using academic language such as "adhesive", "cohesive", and "viscous" into a Venn diagram on the board. Once full, the teacher asks students to make predictions about what properties a mixture of both substances would possess, then write them in their Lab Journals. 

Guided Learning: 

Select one student to perpetrate the creation of @inoppositionflorien's Lovecraftian admixture. I suggest asking for volunteers and rolling a die to select one at random, or else follow your own routines.

Dress the volunteer in a full lab coat, gloves, hair tied back and covered, and goggles. Get a picture if possible, as memorabilia. This is a good photo op activity.

Instruct the volunteer to mix 2:1 PJ-TP utilizing volumetric measuring tools (i.e. spoons), then test its application to various surfaces. The remaining students record observations in their Lab Journals.

Students repeat the process with 1:1 and 1:2 (if time permits, you may also try 4:1 and 1:4) until they have sufficient data to answer analysis questions. 

Volunteer (with help) disposes of gloves and other irrevocably tainted objects in the trash, or by binding them with the plastic table cover. 

Higher Order Learning: 

Answer the following analysis questions.

1. How did the physical properties of the substances change when mixed together?

2. Was this a mixture or a solution? How can you tell? 

3. What physical or chemical changes did you observe in the experiment? How do you know what kind it was?

4. What possible applications could this new substance have in normal life? Explain.

You know for all that the Fenton's are seen by the fandom as A+ parents, I really don't think anyone has really put any though into WHY they are like that.

Because its VERY clear that Butch bitchman has parent issues, if the Fenton's ACTUALLY acted based on their trauma with how they lost Vlad then they would be almost OBSESSIVE with how safe they are in the lab. They lost their best friend to a lab accident that nearly killed him and unknown chemicals/elements, you're telling me that wouldn't fundamentally scar 20 somethings actively prosuing beings that they see as dangerous? You're telling me they wouldn't look at the destruction of the lab and suddenly ask themselves how could this have happened? How could've they prevented this?

And if you REALLY like the Angst of the Fentons, imagine what it would do to them to realize the ONE time, ONE TIME, they didn't double and triple check the safety of their portal it cost them their son's life.

Anyway I really think it would've been more interesting if the Fentons were obsessed with lab safety and the inherent tragedy of their lives related to that.

Regulations are written in blood and the Fentons have learned this lesson twice over.

its kinda funny that the chaotix are like the only characters who mention having to pay rent or buy food or whatever and theyll take any job that pays because theyre desperate for money but none of the other characters are struggling in this department at all even though most of them dont seem to have jobs. its like the concept of needing money to live exists for no one in the sonic universe EXCEPT for vector espio and charmy

Garage Sale

Well, when the Fentons decided to have a garage sale Danny didn't expect many to be interested. His parents were looking for a way to get money quickly to build more stuff, and he jokingly suggested they could sell some inventions, they took it seriously (Jazz made sure to remove all the lethal inventions, she tried with the ones that might be risky but then they wouldn't sell anything).

Danny knew his parents were strange yes, but he wasn't sure that justified millionaires in his backyard. Millionaires, he'd like to clarify, had never set foot in Amity Park before. He raised an eyebrow at the sight of Bruce Wayne and his sons checking out the appliances. None of them seemed to be interested in the "ghosts" but they hadn't backed down from taking some things either.

So yes, Danny was suspicious. Of course he had made sure the inventions in the sale were safe (although unlike Jazz, he simply decided to make them safe, a few modifications here and there), but the fact that they looked genuinely interested made him uneasy.

Were the Waynes interested in hunting ghosts?

He decided to try something, he crossed eyes with one of them and let his green eyes show before looking away, the boy looked alarmed. He approached him and asked, but Danny feigned ignorance, commenting that all the inventions were green and maybe he had been confused by the reflection (to be fair, most of his parents' inventions were green because of the ecto).

For his part, Bruce had received an alert from Justice League Dark, it seemed they had detected a strange energy, similar to magic, so the bats set out to investigate. They didn't expect to find a garage sale in a house in the middle of nowhere (Amity Park wasn't even marked on the fucking map). Nor did they expect advanced technology or mad scientists.

Bruce decided to pretend he had stumbled into town as "Brucie Wayne" and buy a few things. He shuddered to see that many inventions worked with Lazarus water. Jason, who had strangely agreed to come along, was also upset about the son of the scientists.

Bruce questioned whether he had found a family of villains in the making.

Linebeck, Bellum, and Bellumbeck villain squad au

Linebeck is a captain who sails the sea searching for treasure, which includes stealing from the castle a lot and facing the head knight a lot. Meanwhile, Bellum is creature that despises the ocean king and wishes to steal his power and overthrow him. He does not care about the land of Hyrule, or any land really because of the people who disrespect his home, but he does like the people when they fall into the ocean, trapped and alone for him to feast upon their force. Linebeck and Bellum have met a few times, and frustratingly so, Linebeck evaded him many times.

When meeting the villain team, Bellum needs someone to possess to act as his vessel for when he’s on land. He originally has his eyes on the fierce and powerful first knight, but Linebeck ends up saving the first knight and loses his freedom, being forced into a puppet. It wasn’t what Bellum was going for, but he wasn’t complaining. He just hopes Linebeck is a strong enough vessel to keep him alive on land. But Bellum doesn’t know that they both rely on each other with surviving this whole ordeal.
