As an (UK) English speaker newly using Duolingo to learn Hindi, I'm getting arguably pretty good at continuously recognising the symbols for the different sounds so far
But! BUT, no matter how hard I try 'da', 'ta', 'dha', 'tha' etc. all sound the same (like - if they didn't give me 4 options I'd assume we were only learning one levels of the same) so it's an absolute guess on listening rounds.
I know this is my own brain being poor at picking the sounds, so if anybody has any advice on convincing my brain to see these as distinct I would REALLY appreciate it.
I must appease the owl!

Dont feel embarrassed, everyone forgets words. Last week i forgot the word Bowl. Shit just happens.
I knowwww but sometimes I forget words that I use everyday. I've been learning english for a while now, around 7 years I think and german is practically an enemy of mine. I still feel like I can't speak. So do expect me to be a dummy sometimes and writing an essay trying to describe what I want to say.
And thank you, I really do appreciate this<3

Learning a new language really does make you aware of how many fucking words there are. Waaaaaay too many things in this world that need their own special little word. Grow up.

Was looking at refs and since Viktor has two different leg braces I was wondering, do we think he wears them simultaneously?? The refs don't perfectly line up perspective-wise so it's hard to tell but parts of the one he wears during the Hexcore scenes look like they could maybe line up with the brace that he wears over his clothes, but also some parts really don't and look like they'd be super uncomfy. Also HOW does he take these on and off. Experts weigh in
#viktor#arcane#ig my assumption would be that he wears both simultaneously cause in the scene where he injects the shimmer#it seems implied that he just threw off his clothes and kept experimenting#so one might assume he was already wearing the smaller one underneath#tho it is a funny image to think of him just being like 'one sec i gotta go all the way home and grab my other brace to do this'#he can take off the back brace too cause hes not wearing it in the scene where he's in the hospital bed and you can see his shoulder#where the strap would be#but that one seems to make even less sense functionality wise#everything looks like its screwed together#or screwed INTO him#but only the top bolts on his spine are i think#in the close ups of his back brace model it looks like theres cushioning underneath the parts of it that cover the rest of his spine#so he can take it off. but HOW#what parts of it unscrew/detatch to pull open and off#does it not do that at all and he just has to shimmy it off his shoulder and all the way down his legs to get it off like a romper#the shape language of the designs are cool but like. tell me how it wooorrkkksss#forgive me if im just dumb and dont know at all how braces work and theres a very simple practical explanation for all this#any king who wants to infodump about mobility aids at me....the floor is yours#something to be said i suppose about the fact that zaunites have crazy prosthetics with wild augmentations that work flawlessly#and piltover's like. idk heres some fucking uncomfortable ass metal. salo gets wheelchair in non ada compliant place#they havent ever needed to adapt to accommodate disabilities etc etc#or maybe artists were just like 'heres a design' and everybody clapped and didnt give it a second thought#and then they just turned off the visibility on the mesh when they didnt need it knowing thered not be a scene where its taken off#dont even wanna THINK about what that rig would look like#like 40 different controllers#soft body and rigid hard surfaces needing to move together....#a cold chill just shot up my spine#<- guy who is only an animator and doesnt know how to rig#forgive the magic wand tool with zero cleanup. i am lazy

i'm starting Yotsubato! and I am reading it in japanese hehe. I'm not too interested in the concept as a regular reading, but the idea of trying to read along in Japanese interests me.
It's very difficult to me! I don't get it most of the time but that's the magic of dictionaries.
I remember English was the same fog before I started reading more often, and I do think reading is a very important resource for language proficiency.
One problem with that approach is that my spoken English is very stilted because I'm so used to read words I don't know how to pronounce... but I try not to think much of it. I know eventually I'll practice my spoken English more. And as of this year I talk with my boyfriend in English a lot so there's some practice there.
I think something good about Japanese is that pronunciation is straightforward with my Spanish sounds. I do think there could be a problem with tonality of course, the way I'm stressing different words (i know Japanese tones are not about stress but I'm aware of the fact that as a Spanish speaker I'll probably keep stressing them more to make it more easy to me). Many internet sensei keep telling us to just keep practice and not to think much about it and that's what I will do. I still go to classes and watch anime and stuff so it's not like a reading format would be my only resource. Though at wasn't the case in English either 🤪

I’ve mostly learned Chinese in school, so I know a lot of academic vocabulary while having the language skills of a toddler in some basic areas. Once, I forgot the word for sad, which is a really dumb thing to forget. A bunch of the ways to say sad in Chinese are literally just “not happy”, but I also momentarily forgot how to say happy. So instead I said “there is an economic downturn inside my brain”.
I actually really like the thing when you're starting to get the hang of a new language, enough to understand and say simple sentences but you gotta get creative to get more complex thoughts across, like a puzzle. I remember a time in the restortation school when a classmate who wasn't natively finnish and did her best anyway dropped something and sighed, telling me "every day is monday this week. I have had four mondays this week." And I understood.
I don't think I speak much of spanish anymore, but in the nursing school training period I did there, I did manage to get by with making weird Tarzan sentences. I got a nosebleed at some point and startled another nurse. Not knowing the words "humidity" or "stress", I managed to string together: "This is ok. It is hot, it is cold, I have a bad day, I am sad, I have blood. This is normal for me." And she understood.
And sometimes you just say things weird, but it's better than not saying it. One time, I was stuck in a narrow hallway behind someone walking really slowly with a walker, and he apologised for being in the way. I was not in any hurry, but didn't know the spanish word for "hurry", but I did know enough words to try to circumvent it by borrowing the english "I have all the time in the world."
The man burst into one of those cackling old man laughters that they do when something in this world still manages to surprise them. He had to be somewhere between 70 and a 100 years old, and I guess if there was one thing he wasn't expecting to hear today, it would be a random blond vaguely baltic-looking fuck casually announce that he is the sole owner and keeper of the very concept of time.

recent realization has been just how much of rgu is based on soviet art. we all know by now how ohtori's warping architecture is inspired by constructivism
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but apart from that, the thing that makes rgu's cinematography special—it's usage of esoteric images to create visual new meanings + it's repeated shots of lined up objects—is so clearly Eisenstein
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
rgu directly utilizes Eisenstein's theory of montage—and it's my favorite usage of it too. it feels like the technique was created ex professo for rgu's cinematography. i could think of no better use for it. that girl sure is revolutionary.

Superbat love isn't Bruce making superstrength enduring com peices and tablet pens for Superman to use within the Justice League
Its Bruce making superstrength enduring door knobs and replacing them in Clark's apartment, the Kent's farm house, and Wayne Manor. Its Batmam sneaking into the Daily Planet and replacing Clark's desk and Chair with an exact replica that's strong enough to account for the accidental superstrength

Just your average male living space.
[First] Prev <–-> Next
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#wen qing#lan wangji#A-Yuan#wei wuxian#(***Content warning for me talking about unhygienic living conditions in the tags today***).#The worst part of drawing this comic is that I've seen so much worse. This is a livable space.#I've helped out friends and family who were struggling and let me just say...I have seen some pretty dysfunctional living spaces.#Hell I've *lived* in some very dysfunctional living spaces.#Hording dishes under the bed was always something that grossed me out but it's unfortunately something I've seen people do way too often.#The horror everyone has upon walking into WWX's 'living' set up is so consistently 'Mate how are you living like this?'#It's honestly so integral to me that WWX's 'just left home for the first time' house/room be a depression/dysfunction pit.#You can learn a lot about someon's state of mind from how they keep their living space...and this guy is oozing 'deep depression'.#I don't think he's eaten anything but foods that classify as a struggle meal in a year.#Everyone is trying to stage an intervention but he just isn't in a good enough place to help himself.#By the way: I want to steer away from shaming people who have messy homes/rooms because life *does* hit hard sometimes.#My love language is coming into your home to do your dishes and do some housework. Don't apologize for the mess king.#Nothing could top some of the places I've had to help my older siblings out of.#I'd be okay with my flatmate having a severed limb and a blood pool at this point.#As long as he lets me take out the dishes from under the bed - We're good! My standards are so low at this point.
