my silly fan-made greek mythology lego thing :3

finally decided that if i’m gonna be making a lego greek mythology thing (inspired by what lmk did with jttw) i might as well start slowly introducing the characters

so here’s our main characters :3!

Icarus (Left) and Atalanta (Right) are friends, and have been since they were little. Icarus 🪽☀️

Icarus is one of our main protagonists for LEGO Mythos! He's an energetic and cool guy who can barely fly, despite having wings. 

In Greek Mythology, Icarus was imprisoned in a tower, along with his father Daedalus, because Theseus escaped the labyrinth he created, which caused their King to believe them to be traitors. They escaped the tower with a pair of wings that Daedalus made. 

Icarus' father warned him to not fly too close to the sea or sun, but Icarus didn't listen. He's flew too high, causing the wax used to make his wings to meet, and he plunged into the sea and died. 

This Icarus isn't actually the Icarus in the story though, simply named after him because of the yellow (now blue) wings on his back. Why he has these, no one knows. He lives with his aunt Pandora.

Icarus seems to have a penchant for getting caught up in trouble, which is why he's constantly at the centre of every villainous attack on the city he lives in, New Atlas (which isn't an actual city in real life). 

Icarus has a weird talent for being able to beat maze puzzles, and even though he can't fly with his wings, he can still hover and glide, although it's only for a short amount of time (like Pit from Kid Icarus). 

Icarus is this world's MK.

His voice actor would be Anthony Del Rio.

Atalanta 🏹👑

Atalanta is our second main protagonist, alongside Icarus. She's a determined go-getter who doesn't stop when she puts her mind to something.

In the myths, she was abandoned by her birth father and left to die, only to be found by a she-bear (a symbol of Artemis) and be raised by the bear to become a strong huntress and devoted herself to Artemis. 

In this story, Atalanta was mysteriously abandoned in a forest. She was found by Artemis, who named her after Atalanta and brought her to be raised by a well off family. 

Later on in life, when she and Icarus begin getting caught up in godly shenanigans, Artemis appears before Atalanta and offers the mortal to be her successor, whom Atalanta immediately agrees.

Atalanta enables all of Icarus' dumb ideas and actions, but knows when it goes too far. She always has Icarus' back no matter what, just like how he has hers. 

Atalanta is this world's Mei.

Celestial NATO situation: after everything calmed down and it's Valentine's day SWK is excited to take Macaque to the couple's night dinner theater that the married gods talk about. He is pondering who to sit next to for conversations.))

Wukong: Dionysus and Ariadne are overseeing the play....

Gods couples night is tense. Shadowpeach would get along with the commited couples, but the second the *infamous* gods try to talk to them it gets awkward fast.

Wukong: "Yeah, me and Mac have been around for like at least 6000 years. Maybe more since the chinese calendar works different from you guys." Zeus: "So you've had many lovers and children over the millennia, yes?" Wukong: "Huh? I haven't even looked at another person. Me and Mac are soulmates. Even when we were broken up I didn't want anyone else." Mac: "I think that's because you're ace Peaches. I've felt desire for anothers touch, but I've never fully commited because it never felt right without him." The gods in commited relationships: "Aww!" Most of the other gods: "....." Krishna (16k+ wives): "You guys are weird."

Macaque is also the type to gossip about the scandals from the Celestial Realm, so he ends up with a tight group of brunch friends from other pantheons.

Shipping literally anyone with chang'e starts a fight because she is supposedly suppose to stay forever devoted to Hou Yi. Even shipping her with macaque or spider queen is seen as culturally insensitive

I presumed that the "Chang'e X Mei" anon had actually had this experience in the fandom, taking them at their word. It sounds reasonable, as there are misogyny and infantilization issues within the lmk fandom.

When it comes to Chang'e, there are many versions of her myth. In one version, Chang'e stole the elixir from Hou Yi and ascended to the moon so that she couldn't be followed, in another, she took both pills of immortality out of greed. You also have adaptations like Over the Moon, a film entirely about coping with grief and accepting death and moving on, which was produced in association with a Chinese studio (if you want to learn more, watch this great video by Xiran Jay Zhao!). So like, it's just not culturally insensitive. Being Chinese isn't a monolith

But this post covers numerous examples of people living on as or becoming stars in one way or another.

In the Bionicle universe, Toa were represented by Spirit Stars in the sky of the GSR. Perhaps more akin to beacons in hindsight.

Lhikan’s spirit star remains while he lives. Until he sacrifices himself to save Vakama. And the Toa Metru receive their own stars shortly afterwards.

Earendil and his Silmaril become a star in the sky after he and his wife Elwing work with the Valar and their host to save the world from Morgoth in the War of Wrath.

The Angel Crown, Freedom (and Nina & Thomas Crawford by extension), and Everett Arnoldson merge to form the Perfect Union, sacrificing themselves to destroy the Martian Serpent and save the world.

In doing so they transcend and become stars, forming the Manticore constellation.

The LEGO Batman Movie is still probably one of the best Batman movies ever made. unironically.

even though it's a huge "poking fun at the whole Batman mythos" movie on top of being a LEGO movie. it's still a fantastic Batman movie with a good Batman story. and that's supremely hard to do without aging poorly also.

and, at least for now, it has aged fairly well too. (since 2017)

My family knows I have an obsession with Sun Wukong (The Monkey King) but they think it's Sun Wukong (The Great Sage Equal to Heaven From Actually Chinese Mythology) and don't know it's actually Sun Wukong (The Lego Monkey from Lego Monkie Kid) and at this point I'm too scared to correct them

My favorite thing about Matt Reeves' and Robert Pattinson's interpretation of Batman is that you can see just how well this guy would slot into a family.

Nearly every other Batman adaptation in cinemas (barring Lego Batman) could never fit the Batfamily into their stories. They lack the empathy inherent in the core of Batman's persona. The man is obsessive, brooding, self-destructive, and dauntless. He's a broken genius consumed by his singular goal in saving as many lives as he can.

Snyder's Batman? Nolan's Batman? The campy Batmans of the 80's and 90's? None of them have that hidden, integral kindness that grounds Bruce Wayne.

This grimy, emo, grunge, wet, cryptid Battinson? He radiates anger and fear in equal parts. This guy is vengeance.

He's also such a bleeding heart. He never says it and rarely is he called out on it, but you can feel without any ounce of dialogue that this Batman would never kill. Even an indirect kill would horrify this Batman.

Batman treats life, every single life, as sacred. From the paragon of virtue that is Clark, to the most reviled monster masquerading as a man, to the only do what it takes to survive like Selina; this guy sees every life as worthy of a second chance.

Batman's the type of guy to reinstate Harley's doctorate and give her a show to thrive in. He's the type of guy who would defy all common sensibilities to defend a rogue alien like Kara. He's a paranoid wreck, but his faith in others is also endless.

Battinson is the type of guy to take in a grieving, lost, circus orphan and give him a new shot at life and family. He's the type to be impressed by a Gothamite rat who has the guts to steal his wheels and bring him under his wing. To build up a young spirit who has been inspired by his intellect and reputation.

The Batfamily is integral to the Gotham Mythos, and only Battinson (and ofc Lego Batman) have the heart to manage it.

With Celestial NATO, I can imagine that Wukong went to Hades' underworld to get some materials for wedding bracelets(rings get lost easily). Since Wukong can be HCed as also an artist it would be a fair trade.))

Hades knows that if Sun Wukong is actually asking for something/doing a trade instead of straight up stealing it; then it's serious.

I love the idea of Shadowpeach have wedding bracelets/cuffs instead of rings. They def would put a ridiculous amount of thought into the materials (metal and gemstones) used. You know those saps would use sunstones/ and moonstones/opals. I feel like monkey demons likely go that route anyway, since fingers are for eating fruit with and rings could get lost or accidentally eaten.

Also the thought of Sun Wukong doing art commissions for divine favors is delightful. Many belief systems have gods being unable to create works of art (creative sterillity save for the patron gods of said arts), so Wukong being an active content creator would be considered really rare.

Wukong: "I have painted you and your wife on vacation cruise while Cerberus uses Zeus as a chew toy. You can also see Posideon in the background getting the Jaws treatment." Hades: "Love it." Persephone: "It's def going above the mantle."

Wukong gets a lot of "revenge" art requests.

My Adventures With Batman

If its one thing we know about the western animation industry, its that genuinely original and creative efforts are quickly followed by spinoffs, bandwagon jumpers and out-and-out ripoffs

so, let's take the latest DC Animation darling, My Adventures With Superman

for those unfamiliar, MAWS is a ground-up reboot of the Superman Mythos that's as much a romantic & buddy comedy as it is superheroic drama. It is quite good, and I reccommend you watch it.

Naturally, one of THE anticipated events for future seasons will be when Batman inevitably shows up, which got me thinking on well, the equally inevitable Batman spinoff, which well, see the title of this post.

and here's the thing: Its doable?

How do I know, because we've seen it be done. At least thrice, in fact, but for simplicity's sake, lets stick with the most tumblr gif friendly option: The Lego Batman Movie

that is to say, my hypothetical MAWB would, through its first season, anyway, deal with Bruce Wayne trying to juggle not only being both Batman and Brucie Wayne, Millionaire Playboy, but now newly-adoptive father to his young ward, Dick Grayson.

Batman: The Brave & The Bold gave us a good starting template as well, making Bruce the stoic yet exasperated straight man to the antics of Gotham City's collection of rogues and eccentrics, and the bitter truth that accepting Robin as his sidekick somehow puts Dick in Less Peril

"At least this way I can keep an eye on him, Alfred" "Of course sir, I thought the same thing during your ninja phase." "It wasn't a phase it was training, alfred." "wait" [pause, both Bruce and alfred yelp] "You're a ninja?"

as for Dick, well, he's the deuteragonist, he's taking things in surprising stride, and well, see all those posts around this hellsite about how he's able to somehow get along with the various rogues and drive them to distraction.

as for antagonists, the one with lots of potential is of all people, Killer Croc, as both he and dick were circus folk.

i wrote this into a youtube comment like moments ago, but i feel strongly enough that i will put it out here as well;

Lego Monkie Kid Season 5 does NOT have villains. it has characters that are antagonistic forces and layered with nuance on top of nuance.

not to say previous seasons didnt do this, but this season ABSOLUTELY is entirely filled with characters like this

lmk season 5 spoilers, as well as anything from previous seasons just in case cause idk. might get long too tbh oopsies JINNGFDOIJN

we have a few characters to consider for LMK s5's "villains".

we have Ne Zha's dad (i forget his name, ill probably call him pagoda man), nine headed dragon (consort, 10th king, xiangliu) and nuwa. we could theoretically consider thousand eyed demon, however hes only relevant in one episode so id hardly count that

pagoda man is the easiest to explain, he is an antagonistic force because hes trying to hold onto what little order there is left of the world, he is trying to be the duct tape keeping the sawed in half boat together, and hes trying to minimize risks. does that excuse how he treats ne zha? fuck no, but thats a whole different discussion and depending on your interpretation of how much of the chinese mythos you use for this work will vary. he is just like mk as mk himself points out, it doesnt have to be just pagoda man doing the work, theres people willing to help, and then he joins the heroes side for the end.

cool, great, now. what the fuck do i mean by nuwa?

this is where interpretation is strongest, where it is key. ill just be sharing my perspective. when i was first watching season 5 my partner pointed out to me that in chinese mythos chaos is a core element of the world, it is necessary. this, coupled with the fact that nuwa made mk to fix a cycle she created (which we also dont know how many cycles the world has gone through, it could be one, it could be two, it could be in the hundreds if not thousands, whos to say.) and to keep chaos out... she is keeping the world from being complete. her little cave without the outside world, without proper balance, her little people living blissfully apocalypse to apocalypse. "but theyll all die!" "theyll live again" nuwa says, smile on her face.

she is disconnected from her cave, her world her people, her creations, who knows how long shes been in the limbo, how well she can perceive time, how many times a sacrifice comes in, they get a few words exchanged before they just leave, her in the pillar, only getting glimpses when the cycle is ending of the world, only to be shut in again.

neat, ok, but xiangliu??? hes who was gestured at from the BEGINNING of season 4.

see. heres where we get into the GOOD shit.

this is why it is important to establish that we dont know how many cycles have happened. we do not know how long he has been stuck, how many times he has tried to fix the world over and over. he makes it clear in his ending dialogue, if only he knew how to fix it, that sharing the power of the stones was the key to his freedom. the fact that he goes from what most would consider the least important title to the most important one, his own name, the fact he states he was wukongs friend, his enemy, both, wukong just doesnt remember

that implies longentivity. that implies so many cycles and lifetimes lived inside this cycle, being aware of everything, being so damnably aware of what one considers true freedom, and having to sit at the precipice of that.

it is agony.

xiangliu for the majority of the season is the only one to call mk by his name. mk gets so often called child, kid, nicknames by the others, maybe mei refers to him as mk, but xiangliu has it be DELIBERATE. he altered the course of the cycle to give mk a life, to let him HAVE a life where nuwa didnt care for one, he WANTED mk to grow enough that he would be able to choose. because everything is about mks choice, his ability to choose it all matters on HIS. CHOICE.

the only time this falters is when xiangliu thinks he is trapped for good. he rushes at mk, one final chance at freedom seemingly taken from him. xiangliu never fights mk. he only fights the others when they start fighting him. when its just him and mk at the edge of the world, at the edge of chaos, he talks to mk. tells him what to expect, mentions a mysterious "he" now that mk has opened the cage. and he pushes mk back so he gets to go back to his life. so that mk can have choices still. xiangliu got what he wanted, so its only right mk gets what he wanted too. to live with his friends and let everyone live a life where they can figure something out.

that is why i do not think there are villains in lego monkie kid season 5. they are antagonists with layers of nuance, nuance we arent privy to for reason or another, be it episode count, length, screentime, or that were just not supposed to yet. season 5 does not have an obvious bad guy, a villain, because the nuance is right within our grasp.
