He hated how most of them just stand around like buffoons and do not partake in any actual work that involves saving Mondstadt. He wouldn’t admit that he enjoys playing Batman. He hated them all except for one.

One he was willing to forgive all flaws of. "Knight of Favonius…always so inefficient,”  He scoffed at the pathetic sight of the hilichurls trying to dry roast a few knights roped to a wooden stick for their dinner. “Seriously, You’re so right Master Diluc.” Diluc’s head turned so fast at the sound of a new voice. When did you get here? Were you always there and how did he not sense you around?

That’s simply how you always were. A hard worker amidst slackers – he always termed despite Jean trying to explain that others work hard too. Perhaps that’s what caught his attention, honestly, he would never know what did. “G’morning…” He murmured against your skin, head buried in the crook of your neck, your flushed bare back pressed against him. “5 more minutes…” he heard your soft and groggy voice evoking a chuckle from the usually passive man. “Have I ever told you…how beautiful you are?” Diluc muttered against your skin. You smiled and turned around, “You always do. I remember my Dark-Knight Hero crying at the altar.” You pressed a finger against his chest, while he scoffed at the memory. “Don’t remind me about that, Kaeya doesn’t let me live that down…” He sighed, his brother consistently brought up the matter of him crying whenever he was losing an argument. Foul play if you ask anyone. “So…breakfast downstairs or in the bed?” He planted a kiss on your cheek while you hummed out a response, “Bed, you didn’t exactly go easy on me the previous night.” You recalled the events of the passionate night the day before. The honeymoon phase never seemed to end. “I am so sorry–” He panicked,” You're not in pain are you? I promise I’ll be gentle– I knew I should’ve been more considerat–” You stopped him by pressing a kiss against his lips. He groaned at the feeling of your soft lips touching his hands tangling themselves in your hair.

“I’m kidding silly… you should stop taking things so seriously unless you want me to start searching for grey hairs amidst those red locks of yours.” You snickered out seeing him release a breath of relief.

If the Darknight Hero really does exist, he's probably just someone in disguise. When he gets up in the morning to brush his teeth, it's the real him. He was his real him in front of you. People may call him a loser for such vulnerability…he was a loser for you.

PRODUCT NAME: READING BOOKS OUT LOUD. One would say married to someone like Alhaitham was nothing short of a nightmare. They weren't 100% right. Shrouded beneath the aloof and meticulous personality resided someone who was in complete denial towards being loved. He loves it.

Who was he kidding? Nobody in a million years thought someone could put up with his insufferable personality — said Kaveh, his unpaying tenant. That was until he ran into you during his time as the newly appointed Scribe. You were like a painter, splashing heaps of paint in his 90s black-and-white life. Was eating ice cream always this enjoyable or was it because it was with you? Was the gossip between co-workers always this interesting or was it because it included you?

Why was his heart having an entire Queen’s rock and roll concert talking to you? Was it cardiac arrest or– He almost shuddered at the thought of it being what they called love.

“You’ve got flour on your face, sweetheart.” His teal eyes blinked amusingly into yours, a faint smile curling up his lips. You must have saved a nation in your previous life to land this man as your husband. Beige shirt perfectly sculpting around his abs – contrary to him calling himself “feeble,” hair slightly tousled and slight sleepiness in his eyes. He might not act like it but he was a little child whose needs had to be tended to like the coffee mug in his hands which you made, like usual. You wouldn’t want a cranky Alhaitham now, would you? “Hmpf, not my fault, this cooking book is completely bogus!” You rubbed your cheeks with the back of your hand, wiping away any remaining flour. “This is so boring…if only someone could provide their poor wife with some entertainment.” You always resorted to theatrics to get him to do things for you, albeit begrudgingly. “No, the same tactic is not going to work again.” “Please…” “No…” He groaned, tone almost pleading not to put him through the torture again. “During better or worse!” You resorted to the ace up to your sleeve. WEDDING VOWS! “Stop quoting the wedding vows.” He sighed in defeat. The most intellectually gifted man in the nation couldn't win against his own wife. Ironical. He got up and grabbed a book out of the bookshelf; a small fraction of his much larger library.

“Miss Elizabeth,” Alhaitham lazily flipped through the pages earning a rebuke. “More emotion! You are ruining the scene.” Alhaitham sighed and cleared his throat, “I love you most ardently…” His tone was feathery soft, emotion surging in it. A smile crept up as he stared at you endearingly.

“That’s much better. Though I seriously think Mr Darcy should’ve said– Miss Elizabeth, allow me to kiseth thy lovely lips.” You mimicked the deep voice of the character with the failing British accent. “Please have mercy on Jane Austen’s ghost and let her enjoy the afterlife.” Alhaitham chuckled and continued reading as you continued baking.  It was a shame that a man of such talent only paid attention to the truth itself and not to the people around him. If only the searching eyes of the ordinary say the exception to his indifference, you.

This was your biosphere, just you, him, novels and food encapsulated inside your small home.

"Hm?" his amber eyes shifted to gaze at the hairpiece the lady was holding. "Most exquisite.." He remarked, seemingly going into deep thought. Instead of a compliment, he said something that made the woman back away, "Such beautiful craftsmanship...may I ask you to tell me where you found this? I wish to buy one for my wife–" he paused, seeing the lady vanished after pointing at the shop where she got it from. "Zhongli, you should be able to tell why people approach you..." Hutao sighed, standing beside the rather oblivious gentleman. "Let's just continue...we've got customers to find!" Hutao started walking alongside the railing, hoping to find people in need of funeral services. "Maybe we should go and ask peopl– Zhongli??" Hutao looked around for the Consultant, who was caught up chatting with a shopkeeper over some earrings. "Zhongli!" Hutao called out to him, causing his head to turn towards the director. "Oh, apologies...It seems I got too carried away. These earrings caught my eye...I'm sure [Name} would love them.." he mumbled, staring at the jewellery. "I'll take them." "Mister Zhongli? What about the payment..." The shopkeeper meekly asked, causing Zhongli to turn his head fully at Hutao; gazing expectantly. Hutao should've expected this... "Zhongli, we are out here to find customers! Not buying gifts for [Name], her birthday is months away!" "They say the best things should be done first. After all, why must I wait for one specific day to express my love for my beloved?" Zhongli asked curiously and Hutao shaked her head; love was clearly out of her expertise. Zhongli, he is particular about everything. He only attended the best operas and focused on the perfect ratio for the creation of an authentic dish.  On a typical day, all you will glean from him is a few pieces of useless trivia, because he particularly enjoys sharing these fun tidbits with you. He was particular about you and your likings. A smile on your face was what he wanted by the end of the day. "Wriothesley, I want a dog!" You crossed your arms, staring down at the Duke who was glued to the chair in his office. “But why? That’s just unnecessary responsibility…” Wriothesley sighed, rubbing his temples. This was the 3rd time this month you’ve brought up this topic. Was he that incompetent in terms of filling his role as your significant other? Perhaps not with the never-ending paperwork. Oh, how he wished people would just stop committing crimes. “I get lonely in the Fortress…I want a child.” You put forth your point by using the term ’ child’. Child, dog same thing. You hoped to finally convince him this time.

“We have Sigewinne.” Wriothesley pointed at the head nurse prepping tea in the room with the back of his pen. “I am sorry, Your Grace but playing the role of the child is out of my job description.” The Melusine replied indifferently, pouring freshly seeped tea into the three cups. “Fine, we will go get one…I’ll schedule a meeting with the owner of the pet shelter. Happy?” He asked you, chin resting on his palm. Perhaps getting a dog was a good idea as he was guilty of being unable to spend quality time with you… “No way…” “Isn’t that..?” “The Duke of the Meropide–” “He rarely appears in public..” Wriothesley held out the door to the shelter for you, hoping you would go in and it would finally save him from the gaze of curious onlookers. The two of you walked in, only to be pounced upon by a big dog. “Kal! You sly dog! I knew I shouldn’t have let you out!” The caretaker yelled at the big ball of black fur who had tackled Wriothesley to the floor and was aggressively licking his face, tail wagging in delight. “Are you okay?” You asked your fallen husband, who just chuckled in response. “I am good just– Okay stop! I understand your gesture of love.” Wriothesley got up as the dog encircled him. “This one is so adorable…” you gasped at the cuteness radiating from the dog and its big brown eyes. “You’ve got a keen eye! This is Kal, Shiloh Shepard, one of the finest dogs out there.” The caretaker combed her fingers through the thick and groomed black coat of the canine. “He seems to have taken a liking to the Duke.” The caretaker continued as the dog ran back to Wriothesley, peppering his face with licks. “He even looks like you.” You teased as Wriothesley stared at you in disbelief. You did not just compare him to a dog…he even did a double take at the dog to confirm. “We will take this one then…” He chuckled in amusement. Never had he imagined marrying you and on top of that getting a four-legged beast. Needless to say, Wriothesley proudly walked out of the shelter, holding the big dog in his hands like a child. It felt complete ever since getting Kal; like your own little family. Wriothesley wouldn’t admit it but he loved the dog, despite it hogging all of your love and attention. He didn’t expect to be fighting over cuddling rights with a dog!? 

He watched you and Kal sleep peacefully on the couch, keeping him company while he finished up his work. He felt a sense of gratitude…people of the Fortress knew little of the crime he once committed. The only one who still remembers it like yesterday is Wriothesley himself. And no matter how much glory or repute he has earned, he still considers himself to be the same old Wriothesley he's always known.Neither a good person nor a complete villain. He's just another soul, still living on in this world. However, your eyes always reassured him in ways he couldn’t describe. Everything was perfect…

Now I find myself in a rather awkward predicament.” He chuckled. Dear god, this man was so beautiful that his beauty was almost blinding with the morning sun perfectly hitting his face.

“Say ah,” You requested and he complied. Who better to take constructive criticism from other than your husband? “New filling?” He covered his mouth while chewing on the croissant. “Yup, how is it? I was experimenting with some Rainbow Roses and these Inazuman berries I bought.” You blinked curiously, waiting for some input. “Hmm it is very pleasant, it is fascinating how you manage to maintain the freshness of the fruit…” You smiled at his compliment, before noticing him struggling with the jabot around his neck. “Need help?” You offered and he nodded his head. “This is absurd..it usually isn’t this difficult.” He frustrated replied, it was amusing to see the cool and collected man all worked up about clothing. “I suggest simplifying your outfit.” You attached the jabot and secured it in with the teardrop brooch, fixing the ruffles. 

“Thank you. I do prefer my outfit as it conveys the message I wish for it to convey.” He explained before staring at you. You knew that look, he looked at you with his eyebrows slightly creased when he was hesitating from saying something. “What is it?” “Do I get a goodbye kiss before I leave?” “Pfft! I didn’t think you would take that seriously!” Conclusion: this man was wayyy to cute.

Hypothetical question:

There is a book that is 200 pages long. If you read the entire book, you will 100% get a neurodegenerative disease and die in 1-5 years. Everybody knows this. There are studies. Every reputable organization, even very pro-free-speech ones, are like "no this specific book WILL literally kill you."

There are no consequences to reading the first page of the book. There are studies. The only risk is that you might be interested enough that you'd like to read the rest (especially if you didn't know about the effect.)

(More details: The effects of reading past Page 1 are hotly debated - you do need to read all 200 pages to get the disease, but some kind of compulsion kicks in over time and makes you much more inclined to finish the book. Reading to page 10 is a little dangerous, reading to page 50 or past is very dangerous, but it's kind of unclear how much. The compulsion is NOT measurably present from the first page.)

Annoying the absolute fuck out of you(obviously)

You could be lying down reading a book or watching a show/movie and this man will sneak up behind you and try to jump scare you or use his infinity to prank you. When he’s laying on you and you haven't said anything for a while he’ll look up at you and start poking your cheeks or biting you.

On days where his behavior doesn’t resemble a child fueled by 6 bottles of coke, 3 monsters, 8 red bulls, and 10 tons of sugar, he’s extremely gentle and soft with you. Satoru will cling to you and kiss your cheeks, neck, forehead, or hands or caress your face while staring deeply into your eyes telling you that he couldn’t imagine a life without you.

Encouragement 

Sparring with Maki was never easy and 100% of the time you end up getting knocked on your ass which is a little sad considering she always takes it easy on you. She has a habit of letting everyone know how much they suck and rarely ever encourages those that train with her but with you she’ll help you up and tell her that you almost had her and to not give up with a half soft half cocky smirk. 

Because of where and how she grew up, she’s not the best with emotions but if you’re sad/stressed she’ll rub your back and tell you everything's gonna be okay or let you fall asleep in her arms if you’re at home.

Princess treatment

If you need something but you're sitting with your legs over Suguru’s lap or laying on him and don’t feel like getting up he’ll sigh and immediately get up and get it for you. 

When you’re out shopping with him, Suguru always pays for everything even when you try to fight him over it. He’ll always buy you food or offer to share his with you even though he ends up fighting the reflex to swat your hand away  when he sees you reaching for some out of his peripheral due to Gojo trying to steal some all the time.

When you’re too tired to get ready or you’re sick he’ll bathe and clothe you then brush your hair while telling you how beautiful you are and that he’ll always take care of you.

Megumi~

Honestly all i can say is “idk i just work here🤷‍♀️”

In the beginning of your relationship Megumi was awkward. He was a mix between vibing in silence with you and trying to figure out what to say and do. You knew he was never good with his emotions and that was completely fine because he had other ways of showing what he was feeling or thinking. When he missed you he’d text or call to “check on you” but really it was to hear your voice. When he randomly felt like saying ‘I love you’ he would rest his head on your shoulder or lap or play with your hair.

When you’re sick or stressed but have stuff to do he’ll get sassy with you and demand that you stay in bed and that he’ll take care of both everything you need done and you.

Acts of service and princess treatment

Kento’s acts of love and affection range from small forehead kisses every time he walks by you or leaves the house to you coming home to find a trail of rose petals leading to the bathroom while he’s leaning over the tub, pouring in bath salts and essential oils. He’s always doing something for you like cooking dinner in a pink heart shaped apron and massaging your feet even when he’s the one that had a long day. 

You getting sick is a whole different story. Kento goes from calm mama Nanami mode to uncharacteristically panicked mama Nanami mode. He makes you soup, runs bathes for you, checks your temperature on the hour, and forces you to stay in bed but the second he hears you having a coughing fit his composure goes out the window and he’s by your side in a millisecond rubbing your back and asking if you need to go to the hospital in a panicked tone.

Choso~

Another “idk I just work here🤷‍♀️” moment 

Choso is not only new to society and normal people but also to relationships. He has absolutely no idea what to say and when to say it, but he notices that when he acts on his urges that you seem to like it. Sometimes he wants to blurt out how much he loves you, but he feels like it’d be weird so he’ll either hold your hand and stare at you or pick you up, take you to bed, and cuddle.

Choso noticed that you love playing with his hair so when he feels as though you’re not giving him enough attention, he’ll ask you to brush his hair or wash it for him.

When you get sick he breaks down and panics. He’ll call Itadori balling saying that he needs help, you’re dying, and he doesn’t know how to make you better. It happens every time you get sick; panic and call Itadori to come help while he cradles you in his arms, begging you not to die, with his tears dropping on your face while you try to calm him down.

You closed your eyes in annoyance at the calm voice and after a barely audible sigh, looked up from your notes.

“Yes?”

Your class president regarded you with his usual icy stare for a moment before asking, “How did yer test go?”

And there he did it again. As if he didn’t know that he beat you by two points.

“You know very well how it went.”, you grumbled.

“No, that’s why I’m askin’.”

“I got a 98. There, are you happy now?”

Kita blinked twice.

“That’s a great score, well done.”

You scoffed. “And I’m guessing you got 100?”

“101, actually.” When you just stared in disbelief, he added, “There was a bonus question on the back.”

Your shoulders shook with anger. You hadn’t even noticed.

“Good for you.”, you pressed out.

“Thank you.”, he replied, still standing in front of you like he was waiting for something.

You were about to tell him to leave you alone when Aran stepped to your table.

“Hey y/n-san!”, he greeted happily and your face softened immediately, “Heard ya swept the floor with the class on that test. What did ya get?”

You gave a little fake-humble chuckle and shrugged, “Well, you know, not perfect but I got a 98.”

Kita frowned. He had asked you the same question and you had glared at him as if he had demanded you clean the classroom floor with a toothbrush. He watched closely as his best friend kept making simple smalltalk, asking about your plans for the weekend and if you’d wanna join him and his girlfriend for a movie since they had an extra ticket.

Why was it so easy for others to make you smile?

Kita focused on your hands, fluttering through the air as you animatedly discussed further plans and perked up when he heard his name.

“Ya wanna come, too, Kita?”, Aran asked, patting his friend on the shoulder.

“If it’s not too much trouble.”

The two boys turned their attention back to you when you let out an involuntary groan.

“Something the matter, y/n?”, the ace frowned.

“It’s just… actually, you know what, just give the ticket to him. I don’t have time anyway.”

“Come on, it’s just a movie. It’ll take two, maybe three hours outta yer day. What’s the harm?”

“I don’t want to go if he is there.”

Surprisingly, you looked just as shocked at your words as Kita felt. His eyes widened, then he bowed and excused himself, going back to his seat.

All throughout the next period you kept your eyes on Kita’s back. He seemed alright, you thought.

You hadn’t meant to say it out loud. You had fully planned on finding an elegant excuse not to go but something about this boy just rubbed you the wrong way. Probably because he was everything you hoped you could ever be - calm, composed, incredibly smart and capable in anything he touched.

Did your words hurt his feelings? You chewed your bottom lip, not hearing when the teacher called your name for an answer.

As you began to stutter, trying to make sense of what was written on the blackboard, Kita raised his hand and gave a flawless reply, as per usual.

You sunk further down in your chair. He didn’t seem all that bothered after all. Still, you should apologize.

And so, once the bell rang announcing the end of the day and everyone filed out of the classroom, you took a deep breath.

“Kita-san.”

The gray-haired boy paused in the middle of putting his books neatly into his backpack and looked up at you.

You turned, waiting for a moment or two until the remaining stragglers left the room to not have any witnesses.

When the door closed behind the last student you brought your eyes back to Kita who still waited patiently, still halting in the movement of sliding his workbook between two notepads.

“I’m…” Ugh, why did you do this to yourself? He was perfectly fine. Maybe you shouldn’t… “I’m…” Come on, y/n, just one more word. Come on. “Sorry.”, you breathed out.

“Sorry?”, he repeated, tilting his head slightly in question.

“Yes.”, you said, firmer this time, “I’m sorry.” Look at you go, not even stumbling that time.

“For what?”

Oh come on, don’t make me say it! He was just rubbing it in again, wasn’t he!

But when you met his eyes, the question seemed genuine.

“It was rude of me to say that earlier.” You added a little bow for good measure.

“I meant to ask a while ago-”, he began and you straightened, looking at him, “Did I do something to ya? Did I insult ya in some way? Because if I did, that wasn’t my intention.”

“It wasn’t?”, you blurted out and he blinked again, this time in alarm.

“No, of course not.”

“So… when you always ask about my scores and tell me yours, you…”

“I was just makin’ conversation.”, he admitted.

“You… what?”

“I was just tryin’ to find a way to talk to ya.”, he said simply, finally slipping his workbook into his backpack.

“But why?”

“Why wouldn’t I?”

“I dunno.”, you mumbled and felt really silly all of a sudden.

“I like ya.”, he said, again in that very matter of fact tone of his and your jaw dropped.

“Yer smart and funny. People find it easy to talk to ya - not that I would know.” Did he… just make a joke?!

“And I think yer really pretty.”, he added, zipping up his backpack and getting up from his chair. He wasn’t that much taller than you, you noticed. Strange, you would have thought that all the volleyball team was super tall.

“You think I’m pretty?”, you asked, your voice rather quiet and probably a whole octave higher. Subconsciously you tugged at the front of your uniform, that always looked too baggy or too tight on your plump figure.

He nodded. “Of course.”

And then he shouldered his backpack and just walked past you towards the door.

“Wait!”

He halted and turned, hand on the door handle.

“Do you… maybe… wanna go to the movies this weekend? W-with me?”

Kita smiled and nodded again.

Mattheo Riddle Headcannons

Being the son of the Dark Lord is no easy task. Obviously.

Growing up, Mattheo had very limited contact with other people, which stunts his social skills a lot, especially with his peers

Once he breaks out and has the ability to meet other people, he's 100% an extrovert because he feels like he has to make up for everything that he missed out on

Growing up alone though made him very independent and self sufficient

Lots of trust issues, lots of abandonment issues

But he's also very bad at picking up on social cues, and reading other people's emotions

He grew up being outwardly judged by everyone around him, which caused him to develop a sort of apathetic attitude as a buffer

This gives him a sense of freedom because if he doesn't care about other's opinions, he can do whatever he wants, they'll judge him either way, so why not do what makes him happy

Mattheo also has a deep internal rage

Like, level 11 out of 10 on the scale of anger issues

He bottles up all his emotions and frustration with the world, often lashing out and exploding at the smallest triggers

His frustration mostly stems from the fact that it's not fair that he's suffering for the actions of his father. Because at the end of the day, he's still innocent in all of it

This is also why he's particularly spiteful and disdainful of authoritarian figures

He simply doesn't owe them anything

At Hogwarts it's hard for him at first. It's pretty clear that he didn't have much of a childhood and that he was forced to grow up much too fast

And once again, he finds himself being judged by everyone, so nothing new

His biggest pet peeve is when someone complains about a minor "tragedy" from their childhood, because he's absolutely certain that he had it worse

He rebels against authority and stands up for what he might find to be an injustice, but he'd never go after someone without cause

Hogwarts is one of the first places he's able to truly act his age

He joins the Slytherin quidditch team,

He's a beater (which is kind of therapeutic as it allows him to let out a lot of his anger)

Often skives off of class,

He's not book smart like Theo, but makes up for it with street smarts

And likes to pull Theo into the fray simply because he can

This is also how he gets his reputation for frequently sleeping around to put it nicely

Mattheo grew up with a distinct lack of affection from those around him which causes him to search out any hint of it that he can find

He doesn't really use girls per se, he just doesn't quite understand the concept of love

But when Mattheo falls, he falls hard

The first time he catches feelings, he's absolutely terrified that he's under the influence of a love potion

Very confused, very upset, and denies it to the ends of the Earth

But once he comes around, he's all in

He doesn't like to think of himself as jealous, just territorial.

Jealousy is when something isn't yours and you want it. But you belong to him, and he'll be damned if he doesn't defend his territory

He also isn't shy at all when it comes to PDA, simply because he wants everyone to know what's his

Definitely love bombs, but he doesn't know what that means

Won't bat an eye before hexing someone for looking at you too long (will act innocent and pretend it wasn't him)

Honestly probably would not be the best partner initially because he's so used to being independent

And would likely try to hide a lot of his anger and emotions from you because his biggest fear would be being judged by someone he loves

It would take a lot of time and effort to work through, but Mattheo would be willing to put in the work because he's determined to have the one thing his father never could

The Dos and Don’ts of Giving and Receiving Constructive Criticism

Some of these should be painfully obvious and yet. They come from experience.

Receiving feedback:

Do

Understand that a criticism of a character’s thoughts, actions, morality, and choices are likely not a criticism of you as an author, unless the character is an author insert

Understand that they are being paid to critique how successfully you told an entertaining story, not pander to your trauma dumping

Understand that critiquing a book’s success as an entertaining story means that how much you yourself connect with or love a character or scene or plotline is irrelevant if it doesn’t make a compelling narrative

You might have written your book for yourself. Your editor is a different person with their own human biases and perspectives. If you just want to pay someone to stoke your ego, make that 100% clear up front.

Stand up for yourself and clarify where necessary if some details were overlooked or if explaining outside the narrative can better contextualize anything confusing or lacking detail.

Stand up for yourself in what feedback you are expecting, and what degree of criticism you’re willing to endure. An editor can let more or less of their own views show depending on what you ask for.

Stand up for yourself if your editor delivers inadequate or useless feedback. You’re paying them for a job, and you deserve to have it done properly.

Try to separate dislike of a book from dislike of yourself. It’s not easy, but the goal is to fix your book that you’ve already spent a lot of time writing, and they’re only trying to help.

Remember that your author insert is subjected to the same level of criticism as any other character, and that you asked for this.

Keep an open mind and be prepared for feedback that you don’t like, because you can’t please everyone. Your editor should be able to tell you whether or not a scene or character, or plotline works separate from their own personal tastes.

Don’t

Argue with your editor over their religiosity or lack thereof and insist that adhering to genre expectations means they “worship the god of [genre]”. (really, argue with your editor over anything like this, e.g. their own sexuality, religiosity, gender, socioeconomic status).

Argue with your editor while still expecting more work from them as if your aggression will in any way positively impact their perception of your book.

Insult your editor’s intelligence for not understanding your jargon and attempts to sound smarter than you are.

Get mad when your editor sees right through your BS and calls it like they see it, specifically your self-insert Mary Sue protagonist.

Insist that the solution to better understanding your book is for that editor to do extensive homework on your niche topic. If it’s a niche book for niche audiences, hire an editor who’s already knowledgeable about that niche topic.

Equate a bad review and opinion of the book with unprofessionalism. These can overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

Forget that your book is probably meant for leisure and entertainment, and your audience is under no obligation to read “until it gets good,” when they can go do literally anything else. Your first job is to entertain, if you write fiction.

Giving Feedback:

Do

Pay attention to your client’s wants and needs and expectations. If they’re more sensitive to bad feedback, do your best and stay as objective as possible. You can’t please everyone, either.

Helpful feedback includes an explanation of why an element needs work and how it can be improved. Saying “I hate this” with nothing else helps no one and just makes the author feel bad with no direction of how to make it better.

Communicate beforehand how much of your own personality your author wants from you. Do they like personal opinions and your personal reactions to the text, or do they want it as impersonal as possible and solely focused on the structure of the narrative? This might avoid a mess.

Remember to leave notes of where things worked well to balance the criticism. Even a simple “this is good” highlighting a line or a paragraph or two helps keep authors motivated to keep writing. I firmly believe that no book is completely unsalvageable.

Make it painfully clear with no room for debate that criticism of a character is not criticism of the author, unless it's an author insert, in which case the author absolutely asked for it.

Make it clear that you are just one person and these are all suggestions, not laws.

Don’t

Let your own personal opinions cloud your judgment of whether or not someone with different tastes could enjoy the book.

Unless given permission, get too personal with the narrative and reach beyond what’s written on the page.

Do more than what you’re paid for. You’re an editor, not a therapist for the writer’s trauma dumping.

Forget to wrap up all your thoughts in a condensed format that the author can reference, as opposed to endlessly scrolling through the manuscript trying to summarize your points for you.

Walk away with absolutely nothing positive to say about the manuscript. Even if it’s awful on every front, the writer still tried and that deserves merit.

This is from my personal experience beta and sensitivity reading, and dealing with other beta and sensitivity readers. We are all human and these jobs are not one-size-fits-all and there aren’t really hardline rules as every author, editor, and manuscript is different with different needs.

Just some things to keep in mind.

But also, for the authors who do write self-insert Mary Sues: You are in for a very rude awakening if you expect anyone other than yourself to adore your book with zero criticism. If you really just want someone to proofread and look for typos, tell them.

having sally yell at baby percy feels so fundamentally wrong. i didn't mind when she got frustrated with him in the pool because that was just one instance of sally losing her temper but now it's like oh. this is just how the show version of her is.

like. idk. one of sally's defining traits was that she never got mad at percy. that didn't mean she was weak. that was her strength. that she could pull through tough times by putting a smile on her face, so that she didn't scare percy, so that she could protect him.

i just feel like it would have been a much more well-defined scene if we got to see how sally manages to talk percy out of the car by. being nice?? coaxing him??? explaining the situation in a way he would understand instead of just saying "there are things i have to do that you don't understand" (if you say that to a kid they are 100% not going to listen to you bc. yeah they don't understand!! so you have to explain it in a way they WOULD understand!!)

if sally had already been dating smelly gabe at this point, she could have leveraged this. she could have put a funny spin on it and said "i'm just trying to get you away from smelly gabe's stinky gym shorts." if she wanted baby percy to not feel like she was abandoning him and separating him from the rest of society, she could have said "the kids in there are just like you." she could have given him a keepsake, to show she will always be with him. there are SO many ways the writers could have spun this and they just didn't. they went the easy way out.

all of these flashback scenes are painting a very unfortunate picture that percy didn't actually have a good relationship with his mom. and i know that's not the vibe the show is trying to go for, but they've got to understand!! that not everyone who's watched the show has the read the books! we don't all automatically know that sally and percy have the bestest mother-son relationship ever! if you only show sally being frustrated at baby percy, we start to think oh dang, maybe this whole time percy doesn't actually have a good relationship with his mom!

i had a dream of felix and lovie play fighting on the bed last night. it was so cute😭

wait that's adorable, i wish i had cute, logical dreams but mine are either random or scary or scary in a random way like 88% of the time lol

felix would 100% start it and do it for attention. maybe he's a little pouty bc they've been out all night and felix and lovie have not had a second alone. maybe lovie's been busy with school or even worse hanging out with someone else so felix is feeling a tad neglected, maybe a little jealous.

and they're both in bed, but they're not really in bed together yet. lovie's on her side, within easy reach, but not actively seeking anything out. there's nothing passive aggressive about it,, she's just reading a book.

felix is the type to make a big show about being available rather than asking for attention. everyone's been obsessed with him his entire life so it makes sense. so instead of trying to talk, he just kind of sits in bed and makes sure his hands are folded over his lap just so lovie knows he isn't reading or doing anything.

when that doesn't work fast enough, he says lovie's name, and when that isn't enough to get her full attention bc she's reading, felix pokes her. it's more like a gentle tap to the shoulder with the attitude of poke and bc lovie can feel the difference she pokes him back.

and that quickly dissolves into them poking each other anywhere--arms, shoulders, sides, stomach. then it's more about giggling than winning until lovie moves to sit up in an attempt to get an edge on him. felix isn't having it, so he sits all the way up faster.

now that he has the advantage, he pushes on lovie's shoulder so that she lies down. he's a little quick with it, but he does have the decency to pretend that lovie's hand on his chest is almost enough for her to win.

I started this a few months back but I kinda wanted to post something again so I guess I’m finishing this up now.

Disclaimer that I didn’t play the latest archon quest yet so I may not be totally up to date with Scara’s personality, but he was already mostly done so I didn’t wanna remove that :)

Albedo:

His social battery is just as easily drained as yours, so he 100% understands when you're not feeling up to doing much

If you need some space, he'll leave you alone for a while and make sure you know you're free to call for him when you need him

He makes sure Klee stays quiet during those times, taking her outside or giving her something quiet to do, like drawing with her or reading a book to her in another room

But also, due to his calm and quiet nature, he's generally really pleasant to be around. Both of you find your social battery actually charging when you're in each others' presence, so you often decide to just stay home for the night and sit in silence for a while

You can rest your legs on his lap and he'll just let you stay like that while he reads or sketches

If you'd rather have cuddles, he's fine with that too. He'll gladly cuddle with you or just hold you while he's reading a book and absentmindedly rubbing your back

Scara:

He's sick of most other people as well, so he totally gets you on this one

You can just come to him whenever you need some peace and quiet and he'll make sure everyone else knows not to disturb you guys during that time

If someone ever does dare to barge in while you're resting… Oh, archons have mercy with them. They certainly won’t do that ever again.

Has his own little comfy space for you to rest while he quietly does his work

But he's also not opposed to you resting your head on his lap so he can run his fingers through your hair absentmindedly

He secretly really enjoys these times. It sucks you’re not feeling well, but at least it gives him a reason to spend time with just you

Xiao:

You're with the king of avoiding people, really.

No matter where you are, Xiao knows the best spots to just disappear to for a while if you need time to recharge

If you’re in the middle of a crowd and he notices you feeling unwell, you’ll be gently swept off your feet and carried somewhere more peaceful and quiet

You can just sit side by side for a while, neither of you saying anything, while you look up at the stars or watch the clouds pass by

You’re always welcome to rest your head on his shoulder too. He’ll just stay still so you can be as comfortable as possible while slowly regaining your energy again

He’s grateful about these moments as well, since he doesn’t like being around other people for too long either

You’re a different story -- He enjoys your presence and if anything, it’s like he recharges faster when he’s with you, so he doesn’t mind spending time with you, even when both of you are feeling drained

Kazuha:

When you’re traveling on a ship with people, it can be hard to escape that situation if you start feeling drained. Kazuha isn’t really bothered by it, since he can recharge by just sitting back and quietly watching everyone else for a while, but if that’s not working for you, he perfectly understands and will find a way to help you out

You may find yourself wrapped in his arms and lifted up to a higher, calmer spot of the ship

He’ll hold on to you to make sure you don’t fall off, and then the both of you can just stare out on the ocean for a while and feel the breeze on your skin

You can sit there in silence for a while, but also, if you don’t mind, he may start reciting some poems, or make up his own haikus -- Usually inspired by the sea, the wind, and, of course, you

Tighnari:

If he ever sees you get drained by being around others, he’ll invite you on a walk through the forest

It’s easy to let go of any bad feelings when you’re surrounded by nature, listening to the leaves ruffling in the wind and getting to breathe in some fresh air

He knows the most beautiful spots in the forest too, so he’ll take you to look at pretty flowers, or a place where you can just watch the small lake in peace

He might wander off to see if he finds anything interesting to document, but he’ll make sure to never stray too far away from you

After a while he’ll settle down next to you and rest his head in your lap, allowing you to play with his ears if you’d like

Yoimiya:

She’s probably the exact opposite from you and starts to feel drained when she’s on her own for extended periods of time, but that doesn’t mean she can’t understand how you feel

You’re always welcome to stop by the shop and watch her work on her fireworks for a while as you rest. It’s when she’s completely focused on her work, so even she isn’t quite as chatty as usual

She’ll drop small remarks every once in a while, but makes sure not to overwhelm you any further -- She wants to be a safe space for you, not yet another source of stress

Ultimately she knows that once you’ve recharged, you’ll be happy to listen to her ramble on about whatever is on her mind, so she doesn’t mind some quiet time to make sure you’re feeling well

On days when it’s especially bad, she’ll sit down next to you and pull you into a hug for a while, patting your hair until you finally feel a little better again

Kokomi:

Understands just too well how you feel, she’s actually glad you need just as much downtime as she does

You’re always welcome to stay in her little cave and rest there, no matter if she’s there as well or busy somewhere outside

She’ll be super mindful of you and make sure you feel extra comfortable, so it can be a safe space for both of you

At night when there’s not many people around, she’ll also offer to take you on a walk along the shore, so you can listen to the waves for a while and watch the moon reflect on the water. She finds being near the sea to be one of the best ways to recharge, so she hopes you find it just as helpful

You can sit down somewhere and watch the water together, holding hands while you both get wrapped up in your own thoughts and knowing that you have someone there with you who understands how you feel.

LAWLIGHT HEADCANONS it's easy to say that L and Light have a serious love/hate dynamic. one day they could be fisting eachother's faces, and the other they could be making out with visibly audible moaning noises. who needs breath am I right? Light tries to deny his love for L, although L can read him like a book. It's funny how his so-called rival makes him feel more emotions than Misa ever could. I believe that both L and Light are incapable of actually stating their love for one-another. To show the other their desire, they would either send gifts (L) or just kiss them straight away (Light). I'm not going to pretend like L doesn't buy Light thousands of gifts. He is a multi-billionare, of course his love language would be gift-giving. And as for light, his love language is showing it rather than saying it. We can't have lawlight without a bit of competition, right? They are both very competitive, meaning they try to one-up the other constantly. This can include board games, sports, and especially tickle fights. Light is usually the one to start them, but let's be for real... L finishes them. Light is just way too sensitive for his own good, meaning it's slightly embarrassing for him. Think of it. Light Yagami, the opposed 'god of the new world' and the NPA chief's genius son, ticklish? never heard of it. Or so you thought... I 100% believe that if Light never picked up the Death Note, both L and Light would be married in England somewhere. I'm not saying the Death Note should never come into play, because I believe that that's the only way L and Light would ever meet, since that's the only reason L came to Japan in the first place. I just believe that if it was never Light who picked it up, L and Light would've fallen in love, but GODDAMNIT RYUK. Flirting is a daily occurrence. The other party loves to see the other blush and lose their shit, ESPECIALLY in front of company. I think this goes for L. He loves to see how Light tries to stay composed in front of his father when L is subtly flirting with him. It's downright amusing and adorable to him. LET'S BE HONEST - during the handcuffs situation with Light and L, "Me, You and Steve" by Garfunkel and Oats would be a daily thing that Misa felt. I think Misa had suspicions that they fancied eachother in the beginning. Last but not least - I believe that Light admired L. He thought of him as a friend, and a companion. Light didn't want to harm L in any way, but Kira did. Kira believed L was in the way of creating a 'better world' for everyone else. LawLight will always be my favorite ship, and my comfort dynamic.
