LMK/JTTW gender headcanons & how they respond when asked about their identities:

Im he/they myself so some of these may be self-projecting. A lot are joking, but some are legit examinations. I also hc that gender is a lot more accepted as fluid amongst demons than in a lot of celestials. pls respond with your own thoughts:

Sun Wukong: "Oh I was born under the kun trigram, but I'm a guy a lot of the time." Has personally stolen every form of gender expression he's ever found like peaches from the royal orchard. Transmasc + Genderfluid, He/Him.

Macaque: "I was born under the Xùn trigram, so I guess I don't fall into mortal norms. I just take whatever role I can get really." Gender as fluid as the shadows he controls. Doesnt care what label is put on them. Happily takes feminine titles/roles as long as they are seen as equal to their male counterparts. Intersex + Nonbinary, He/She/They

MK: "I was born afab but I indentify as he/they. I first thought I was a really masc girl, but then a customer called me "A Fine Young Man" once and it changed my whole life. Zhu Bajie: "Isn't gender one of those things Wukong stole from Heaven?" Has no idea what anyone's talking about, but trans and demi-women means more women for him no matter their body type. Cis, He/Him

Hi!

Shackled au is basically a Shadowpeach Au where Macaque is raised by PIF, and meets Wukong while working for DBK. They fall in love, shenanigans ensure. They are also lesbians, because I say so.

I tend to call this AU the "Assistant AU" too. Since Brotherhood Era is mostly just two idiots in love. But the "Shackled" part of the AU becomes more prominent the farther along we go. so for less confusion i'm just calling it shackled.

Chinastuck: the beta kids

tl;dr for the uninitiated: what if all homestuck characters were chinese people

John Egbert: 光勇 (Guang Yong). Lives in Beijing (im sorry /j). Han, Mongolian, and some Korean ancestry.

egbert means "bright edge" and guang means "bright" and also sounds a little like john even if its the surname. john means god is gracious, which is not really a type of name chinese people give their kids so i just went with a common masculine name that sounds good with guang: yong, which means "brave" which i thought was fitting. i think dad egbert definitely calls them by the diminutive yongyong.

June Egbert might choose the name 小玉 (Xiaoyu), meaning "little jade", in reference to her sister.

Rose Lalonde: 刘秀兰 (Liu Xiulan). Lives somewhere in Jiangsu, probably Shanghai. Hmong, Jewish Han, and Kazakh ancestry.

i literally just went with a random common surname that vaguely sounded like lalonde here. xiulan means elegant orchid, so it's a flower name like rose and i think it fits her vibes. she shares the character xiu with roxy's name, tianxiu.

transmasc rose probably steals his name from a book character.

rose is very similar to canon i think, except she lives in a penthouse in central shanghai. i want to say initially she feels her heritage doesn't matter to her but later in life she tries to reconnect with not being "100% han".

Dave Strider: 赵大伟 (Zhao Dawei). Lives in Chongqing. Hmong, Jewish Han, and Kazakh ancestry (same as Rose).

zhao has a similar meaning to strider and was also a surname of the emperors so it has a connection to royalty. this works for both the lotr reference and king david. dawei is... a generic chinese boys name thats the name you give your kid if you want their english name to be david. it means "extraordinary".

david means "beloved" and every single chinese name like that is feminine. Dove Strider takes this as inspiration for the name Xinyan, spelled either 心燕 meaning "beloved swallow" or 心焱 meaning "beloved flame" instead of the more conventional 心妍 meaning "beloved beauty".

dave struggles with their cultural heritage more actively than rose does, and thus leans hard into their sichuanese identity. i headcanon them as making fun of chengdu (chongqing's rival in representing the cultural center of sichuan) in addition to making fun of northern chinese culture. SICHUAN RAHH

Jade Harley: 林玉平 (Lin Yuping). Lives in rural Shaanxi. Han, Mongolian, and some Korean ancestry (same as John).

lin has similar meaning to both harley and halley, meaning grove/forest. yuping means "peaceful jade".

Jude Harley might choose the name 洋 (Yang), meaning "ocean" in the sense of expansive, or he might not feel a need to change his name. swapping names with his sibling is also a possibility.

i think her upbringing just translates to the rural northwest well? also i think its kinda cool she'd grow up near a section of the great wall of china. i could see her engaging in cultural traditions like papercutting and folk singing :> also buddhist jade real and true im not projecting trust

I had also just been watching a video about intersex people. And honestly? I think it fits so much better!

Intersex people are usually raised as one gender (most commonly female) and find out later down the line (usually by accident) that they're the opposite, genetically

Ah you're right. It also comes about just after Bajie just joined the party so he ends up weighing the possibility of running now vs helping his new pilgrim buddy. And whoops! Said buddy checks the boxes for what Zhu Bajie is attracted to - this is a little awkward.

I feel even though he'd flirt (and fail) jokingly at first, he'd value the safety of his Master and his fellow pilgrims most of all. Especially when his monkey bro/sis is currently blinded by weird samadhi wind.

Bajie is a little confused for a moment why Wukong would hide this fact, but quickly remembers; "Oh yeah, I'm a bit much when it comes to women and women-adjacent people." and figures that Wukong didn't want to be similarly harassed by men along the Journey as well. Travelling can be dangerous for fem and/or afab people.

This revelation of course fuels Bajie's later protective nature over his pilgrim sibling. He knows personally how perverted men can be (he is one after all), and doesn't want Wukong to be taken advantage of. Wukong thinks its sweet that Bajie thinks they can't take care of themselves.

Nina is Mexican/Guatemalan/Chinese with Polish roots! 🇲🇽🇬🇹🇨🇳🇵🇱

She is a DemiPansexual and her pronouns are she/her! (Don’t rlly have trans headcanons for her, but I think it’s cool if yall do)

Has autism and OCD

Her body is mostly soft and smooth like a dolphin or whale, but tougher parts of her skin like the bottom of her feet are more like scales.

Has alopecia! I immediately thought of this since when she’s younger (before she turned aquatic) she didn’t have any hair, even as a toddler.

She kept Doggy the Caterpillar around with her into Belle Reve and sleeps with it every night.

Loved watching/playing Lacrosse even when she left the team and well into adulthood.

Has a big fear of hospitals due to her incident along with being a chronically ill child.

Her and Phosphorus have a “wannabe, cool uncle/shy, down to earth niece” relationship

Phosphorus makes a lot of seafood jokes at her expense. She isn’t the biggest fan of them, but she doesn’t say anything because she “doesn’t want to kill the mood”.

Such a good singer! She wanted to join the theatre club in school, but was discouraged after the whole lacrosse fiasco.

Also she’s a theatre kid. Sorry, not sorry. She loves Phantom of the Opera and Wicked (she related heavily to Elphaba). It’s her dream role!

One time, the Bride caught Nina singing “Once Upon A December” to Weasel to help him calm down during his night terrors. She just stood in the hallway listening to her. Once she made her appearance known, Nina freaked tf out as she’s very shy about it, but Bride promised to keep it as a secret between them.

And speaking of Bride, TALK ABOUT (GIRL)FRIENDS!!! Whether platonic or romantic, their relationship is so important to each other. They are each other’s one and only.

Nina and GI are also besties!!! Nina enjoys listening to GI’s stories and training with him.

it's trans day of visibility so I thought in honour of that I'd share all my trans bad kid headcanons :))

we're starting with fabian because ofc we are. I love every iteration of trans fabian, transfem, transmasc, enby (less seen but still good). I personally hc him as transmasc, just because I enjoy the imaginary representation of rejection of anything remotely feminine due to dysphoria and then slowly coming back to the things that you genuinely like about it.

adaine next because I almost exclusively talk and think and breathe about adaine. gender nonconforming for sure, probably nonbinary (doesn't use a more specific label than that I don't think), either they/them or possibly they/she pronouns?

kristen is nonbinary and I think probably uses all pronouns?

gorgug also uses all pronouns, the third point of the nonbinary trinity. transfem gorgug also means a lot to me

riz is transmasc to me, he/him pronouns.
