My iMac is currently downloading macOS Sequoia. I'm scared.

On one hand, security updates, the new iMessage app, Game Porting Toolkit, etc. are all fun new things I'm looking forward to.

On the other hand, since my Mac is an ARM64 device, I'm gonna get that Apple Intelligence bloatware shoved onto my computer. Also, big macOS updates are notorious for breaking shit, so if even a single one of my apps doesn't work, I'm gonna cry.

question for fellow gifmakers who use a macbook: what software are you using to screencap 1080p files now that the older version of mpv (that doesn't duplicate/skip frames) is no longer compatible with macos sonoma?

#i usually only cap/gif 2160p files using mpv but i can't cap 1080p files at all rn because of this and it's bumming me out #i used to have 2 versions of mpv installed on my macbook but now the older version doesn't work with the new macos update #and the newer one STILL duplicates frames on 1080p #ive tried iina but you can't take continuous caps with that afaik #and i'd prefer to not video record with vlc if i can help it so...#if anyone has any advice or workarounds lmk <3 #sameera.txt

I spent too much time taking these photos to not share them

The last two were meant for a family photo in game, wish i took a screenshot of that one as well.

Somehow those two managed to get twins twice, gladly they live with the grandparents so the household didn't go to hell.

Also i deleted the last post to not give the person more attention, they deleted the post, then made another one about how they gave me dysphoria and calling me stuff (phrased as "i can't wait for another chance to do it", you know, plausible deniability and all), but that post got deleted as well, hope that ends there.

aougughhhh i can't get anything to fucking work i hate you macs forever and ever

#there's no good screen recorder with device audio for firefox #and then i was like oh! what about obs!#but the obs mac display capture only works for macos 13 or greater which i dont have #because for some reason that update is unsupported?#thats so fucked btw. they will just like. deem certain models too old and won't push a software update #but then you basically can't do anything without the most recent software #anyway.#i miss making edits #but my other computer is holding on to life by the skin of its teeth #and is really really slow and gets really hot #so there's no way that's sustainable.#but whatever I guess I just won't engage in my hobby

it's finally doing Something

#between the internet outage and the absolute nightmare of trying to boot Ventura i already regret trying this #if i recover my big sur installation ill try monterey tho lmao #i dont have my hopes up tho because i cannot figure out why it wont boot now. i guess all the updating corrupted it?#but also i heavily doubt that since i dont think the updater ever loaded fully so i have absolutely no idea why my perfectly good big sur #installation just up and stopped working alltogether #and frankly i dont have much energy to debug it. ill try for like a day maybe and then just stop and go back to high sierra since some #things i actually liked more there #wjy did they get rid of that beautiful gallery view smh #the problem with high sierra is that nothing fucking supports it anymore #i have to get old versions of eeeeverything #which pisses me off since its not even that old. well at least i csn find my printer drivers for it #if dropover works and also stuff like maccy then i might just stay on high sierra and have it as my admittedly only moderately quirky #macos installation. if some stuff doesnt work i might still try monterey tho lol since that HAS to work right?? like theres off support in #the guide and everything!

It seems that Zorin OS 17 finally fixed compatibility issues with a third-party Cirrus Audio driver that caused certain MacBook models to have no audio, so now my mid-2017 MacBook Pro 13-inch can have a modern, updating, OS that gets new features and active development.

Apple sold this laptop, new, until 2019 (which is when I bought mine, none-the-wiser), and they discontinued support in 2023 with the release of macOS Sonoma 14. I'll be damned if I let a 4-year-old laptop get turned into eWaste, though.

I had previously wiped the SSD and installed Windows 11 because of the aforementioned issues with the audio drivers. Now that I can have audio, though, this computer lives on as Linux machine, as it's 2011 15-inch counterpart does.

Die Migration der E-Mail-Postfächer

Seit ein paar Wochen – konkret: seit dem 19. August 2022 – droht die IT-Abteilung der Hochschule mit der Migration der E-Mail-Postfächer. Das Ganze läuft unter dem Motto „Rollout Microsoft 365“. Ausser der IT-Abteilung arbeitet gefühlt niemand an der Hochschule mit Microsoft (sondern mit macOS), doch das ist der IT-Abteilung egal. In der Nacht von Sonntag auf Montag war es soweit: Der Hochschul-Mailserver wurde zum Cloud-Dienst Exchange Online migriert. Viele Dozierende, so auch ich, arbeiten auf privaten Geräten, in meinem Fall ist das ein MacBook Air (2017), auf dem seit Jahren und ohne Probleme macOS Sierra 10.12 läuft. Ich lese die Anweisungen im Intranet und stelle fest, dass ich Apple Mail nicht umstellen kann. Ich müsste mindestens macOS Mojave 10.14 installiert haben. Ich unterrichte den ganzen Tag und habe keine Zeit mich darum zu kümmern. Ich erledige meine Mail-Korrespondenzen vorerst über Webmail.

Am Dienstag habe ich in der Mittagspause eine halbe Stunde Zeit und suche das Service-Desk der IT-Abteilung auf. Dort hat sich bereits eine lange Schlange Verzweifelter gebildet. Die Serviceleute sind wie immer unfreundlich. Nach so vielen Jahren, sagt der Mensch, der sich mein MacBook anschaut, vorwurfsvoll, sei es schon mal an der Zeit, ein neueres System zu installieren und da sei ja auch schon eines drauf, macOS Monterey, ich müsse es halt nur noch installieren, was ein paar Stunden dauern könne, und ach ja, danach funktionierten einige Programme nicht mehr, Word zum Beispiel und Endnote, die beiden von mir neben Chrome und Apple Mail am meisten gebrauchten Werkzeuge, da müsse ich mich halt dann kümmern und sonst mal einen Tag frei nehmen und das MacBook im Service lassen, das könne dauern. Jetzt erinnere ich mich auch, warum ich das Betriebssystem-Update zwar irgendwann mal runtergeladen, dann aber doch nicht eingerichtet hatte. Ich atme ein und aus und bin dankbar, dass ich diesmal offenbar und immerhin keinen neuen Computer kaufen muss, was frühere Änderungen in der Hochschul-IT auch schon notwendig gemacht hatten.

Am Abend setze ich mich hin, mache ein Backup auf eine externe Festplatte, installiere macOS Monterey 12.1, kaufe ein Update für Endnote und einige Microsoft-Dinge (Word, Excel …), richte meinen Hochschulaccount in Apple-Mail neu ein und irgendwann nach Mitternacht und viel Geklicke, einigem Nachlesen und Ausprobieren, sieht zwar alles ein wenig anders aus, doch es scheint zu funktionieren. Mal sehen, wie lange.
