Jake teeters drowsily in the elevator of their flat building, utterly exhausted. Marc had gotten them to Harrow's little village in the Alps, but the avalanche of tree trunks meant Jake had gotten them home. He was pissed about the date with that gorgeous lady from the museum, but finally dragging them home was its own treat. He didn't have to worry once he got them into bed.
Until the next time Khonshu showed up, anyway.
Alas, it is mid-morning and the neighbors are bustling about. An elderly lady natters at him on the ride up to floor 5, waves at him and says good morning as she approaches her door, which he says back with a duck of his chin, tiredly mimicking Steven's overly-exposed features and little wave until she closes her door and he can go to his.
He unlocks the door and flicks the light on, hanging their keys and coat, toeing off their shoes. He fills a glass with water, drinking it and refilling it twice more before he plucks out a frozen meal and warms it in micro. He moves to the sink and cleans up, washes his hands and face, avoiding the little magnetic mirror on the fridge.
He can tell the other two are deep under, but he has made it this far going unnoticed and doesn't want to call attention to himself now that Steven is starting to poke around suspiciously. He definitely knows something is up now, after yesterday.
Jake goes back to the drawers and digs out a fork, eats the shitty little micro meal in silence, leaning against the counter, and contemplates a shower.
He decides that one is probably necessary. Steven will hopefully wake up in a few hours convinced it was a dream, if Jake is thorough enough with the evening ritual.
So he showers, dresses them in Steven's preferred sleep clothes. He fixes the tape on the door and spreads the sand carefully, and, just as he's stepping over the sand to get into bed, remembers the fucking fish.
Oh, fuck.
He turns and goes over to Gus' tank, already expecting the little floating orange body. It's been at least three days with no food. He grimaces at it and finds the net, scoops him out. He stands there with a dripping net in the kitchen for a moment, deciding if he should take it to the fish shop for a new fish (mostly to make sure he gets a good replica) or not.
In the end, he drops Gus's corpse in a sandwich bag and puts some water in it. He heaves a bone-weary sigh, pulls some street clothes on, and stomps down to the bus stop. He hitches the bus to the fish shop, procures a new fish from the adamant keeper (who insists far too loudly that no, he cannot cut a fish's fin off and if he thinks he might she will not sell it to him. He promises he won't) and drops Gus' body in a bin while he waits on the bus back home.
Over an hour later than he'd wanted, with Gus II bobbling around in his tank, two-finned and clueless, Jake falls into the bed, dead on his feet. The sand had been replaced, the tape is on the door, the ankle restraint is on. Jake tics off the list in his head, relaxes into the bedding, and drifts off.

For this advent period, I want to spend some time reflecting on what I'm grateful for. I feel a little bit lost sometimes, so especially during those dark and cold days, I think it'll be good to create some sort of ritual where I remind myself of the things I do have. I will be posting one thing on here each day, as a way to not make myself miss any or drop out halfway through.
This is also an invitation to share your own thoughts with me, if you want to. It can be on anon or not, it doesn’t matter if we’ve ever talked to each other before, it can be a whole essay or just one word - in any way, I’d love to hear what you're grateful for this year 💜
-----
December 1st: I'm grateful for my friend's baby. She was born this year, and it was the first time someone close to me had a child. To me, wanting to bring a child into this world shows a huge amount of optimism and hope for the future. So I'm grateful that my friend saw enough beauty on this earth to raise a child on it. I'm grateful for this tiny human's existence. Not because she's gonna do great things or because she's gonna grow up a certain way, but simply because she exists.
